It’s not a cold day, but it’s not particularly warm either. The street is quiet, the sky is grey. Passive, you might say. This want of substance all but dissolves with one stride through the threshold of an otherwise unremarkable building; it is not only the air that takes on a physical warmth, but the mood of the atmosphere itself. There is a subtle underlying comfort relayed not through temperature but through spirit. You might expect as much from a gathering of people all with positive intentions and rich spirits to spill out unto the world. The meeting is the Abbotsford Rotary Club, a branch club resident to Rotary International. There are smiling faces on dignified people at every glance: these are people who are making a difference in the world, and who give without expecting anything in return. These are Rotarians, and while their collective name goes relatively unnoticed in day-to-day life, their influence in the improvement through the compassion they inflict upon the world, is powerful. Perhaps the club is best known for one of the most recognizable logos on the planet with its simplified sketch of a golden wheel. However, its overwhelming number of volunteers is truly what defines the organization, and these volunteers have made
considerable changes for the better across the global community – whether it be your local neighbourhood or a country halfway across the world. With upwards of 1.2 million members participating in over 34,000 clubs, Rotary stands salient in our society as a gentle giant, an enormous non-profit organization contingent on foundations of nothing but compassion and concern from neighbours door-to-door and sea-to-sea. With a rich history extending more than one hundred years into the past, it is difficult to select between the vast advancements Rotary has made in its ongoing successful career in its philanthropic endeavours. One notable instance, however, would definitely be of their relief project to rid the world of polio. Not too long ago, hundreds of thousands of men, women, and children would have been diagnosed with the horrific and fatal disease – that number has since been dramatically reduced to numbers in the hundreds, and is progressively moving toward a

complete eradication of the shadow of polio ever plaguing us again. A project that began almost thirty years ago in 1985, PolioPlus has attracted the attention of a number of significant societal bodies, including the World Health Organization, UNICEF, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as well as the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Over eight hundred million U.S. dollars have been contributed to the cause, and by 2012, India was completely cleansed of Polio and the number of people afflicted in the world is rapidly dwindling. Though significant, PolioPlus is not the only extension in humanitarian services Rotary has made. With support in Peace Centres, Interact and Rotaract Clubs, schol-
arships and global literacy programs, Rotary is a resounding statement about humanity and our capacity for giving to others. Members of the Bateman Howler had the chance to attend a meeting in Abbotsford, and it is clear in the faces of the members and the numbers in the programs that the commitment and warmth of Rotary binds people on both a personal and international level. It truly is a structure of heart. The Rotary Club exceeds community and global service, and has a positive global name of recognition for all the right reasons.
INterview with SEAN HOGAN What is your role as Rotary District Governor? Well, Rotary is a larger organization so it needs people to help organize it. So our district - which is called 50/50 - which spans from Everett, Washington to Hope, British Columbia, and we’ve got 2800 Rotarians and 58 clubs, so what I do is help to coordinate all of those clubs. We’re there to lead them, but to guide them and offer assistance.
Is there anyone you look up to? Well, actually, you guys. I told you earlier when I was giving my presentation what really inspired me, was how much we can help youth out. We have some great youth programs. We have a high school based one called Interact, which is a club, and one that’s after high school called Rotaract, and then we have some youth leadership camps that we do. One is called YAIL, Youth Adventures In Leadership, and that’s for Grade 11 and 12, and we have another
one called RYLA, Rotary Youth Leadership Adventures. And those are programs that we do that just go for three or four days. And what really inspired me when I went to my first one was seeing how much potential there is in young people. What I loved is that when we had all of these young people come together as strangers on the first day - because we have Americans, we have Canadians; we have males and females; we have shy people, we have people that really like talking in front of crowds; and people that are good with academics, people that are good with sports - so they’re all different but they came together, and by the time we were done at the end, they were so excited and so enthused, that they would come back and tell us all about the plans they have for their futures.
How can kids get involved with Rotary? Well, there’s a number of different ways that we have.
The first way is to just work for humanitarian service. Become a volunteer and get involved because what you’ll find when you help other people and get some direct interaction with them is that you’ll feel much better about yourself. Get involved in your school activities, especially ones that are hands-on volunteer work so that you can help people. And if you want to get involved with Rotary itself, you can get involved with Interact.
What do you like most about being a Rotarian? I like meeting great people. I mean one of the really nice things about being in my job is that I’ve gotten to meet so many of our people throughout the district. I was so impressed by the amount of quality work that we do. I get to go out and see amazing projects. I have gone to Africa for a number of international service projects and being able to see these children that have very little comparing to us, but by giving them library books and computers we transform their lives.

New year’s revelations As the new year comes along, people feel the need to start fresh as well. They eat right, exercise, and quit procrastinating and the list goes on and on. The same old resolutions begin only to be lost and gone by February. Why not start off with something easier and new?
Taylor CAMPBELL The Howler
you can improve on your best qualities by focusing on them and making them better.
If you’re feeling sentimental and find yourself looking on the past, then why don’t you provide a way to remember all of those good times.
pletely out of homework, television shows, and basically things to do. What you need is a hobby. Take up sewing or knitting or drawing or painting. Or join a sports team that catches your eye. It might be just the risk you need to add a bit of life to your regular schedule. You could even start cooking and baking and work your way up to difficult recipes that used to make absolutely no sense. Seek a dream, and once you have found it, commit to it. You may see that a hobby can turn in to a die-hard ambition.
When the new year begins, get a jar or box and, as the year progresses, fill it with notes of something memorable you did. Or you can take a trip down memory lane by keeping a box and filling it with cards that say one thing you did that day. So, in five years you can see all of the different things you did on Valentine’s Day or just a random day like November 21st! Maybe you’ve been sitting at home lately, com-
2013 is sweeping forward in broad strides and you may find that this school year you’ve been busier and stressed more than ever. If this is the case, and you have no time whatsoever to add things into your crammed schedule, try changing your personality. There are certain traits that everybody can work on, because nobody is perfect. Tackle the crabby side of you, maybe your lack of patience or generosity. Also,
Over all, the resolutions you begin every year that are the exact same and differ only from time to time aren’t going to help you much. Have they actually been committed to in the past? Possibly new ideas for your resolutions just like the new year is the tip of the iceberg for your year-round personal commitment.
Finding Resolve in New Year’s Resolutions
Rebecca GARCIA The Howler
You may find that your train of thought often wanders throughout the year, but there are many ways to keep the train of thought on track! New Year’s resolutions are easy to make, but difficult to commit to. December comes and you realize with great disappointment that you haven’t even accomplished one of your resolutions! However, there are a few tricks to turn that disappointment into pride. First of all, how are you supposed to stay on track if there is nothing there to guide you? One of the most important tricks to remember is to have some form of a reminder! By this, you should keep a sticky note on your mirror or a notification on your phone. Anything that you know that you use a lot, keep a frequent reminder there! Many people often tend to make the mistake of keeping a note in a journal, but one that they never bother to open. It is important to keep your reminders on items that you use all the time, that way you’ll never forget. Second, it’s fun to make many unique and challenging resolutions, but are they ones that you know you’ll be able to manage? We tend to say and do things in the excitement of the moment and often overlook the realism (or lack thereof) to
our goals. Make sure that when you make your resolution vows that they are realistic goals that you know you can achieve over the course of a year. There are goals that can be too difficult and unattainable to make. There is just one last simple trick now. Keep yourself motivated! Accomplishing your goal can be taken day by day, one step at a time. Within each step, reward yourself to remind yourself how incredible you’re going to feel when you’ve finally reached your goal. Be strong-minded as well and fill your thoughts with determination and positivity, constantly telling yourself that you can achieve your goal and that you will. Believe in yourself that you will not fail and you will do everything you can to make sure that you’ll succeed. As a new year arises, now you’ll have a strong idea on how to keep the train on track. With keeping a useful reminder so that you’ll never forget those resolutions. Making manageable resolutions so that you won’t have insane ones that are designed to fail. Lastly, having motivation so that you’ll keep yourself positive and strong minded to accomplish these goals! There is no room for any negativity! When December comes around this year, this time you’ll be able to look forward to making new resolutions to replace the ones you have already accomplished.
Finally, one thing to focus on is to be a happier you. Smile more. It’s simple and easy, and what goes better with a smile than kind words to brighten someone’s day? If you have kind words to say, chances are you will develop a genuine heart as well. Basically, be a positive sunbeam rather than a negative, gloomy cloud.

Emeralde O’DONNELL The Howler
Ever since we can remember, we’ve been making New Year’s Resolutions, but how long have they really been around? As one of the oldest holidays, New Year’s was first celebrated in 2000 B.C. by the Babylonians in the month of March. They would make promises to their gods at the start of the year to return borrowed items and repay their debts. A Babylonian New Year was celebrated for eleven days. At the end of the winter season, medieval knights would take a vow to renew their devotion to chivalry called ‘The Peacock Vow.’ Although the Babylonians celebrated New Year’s in March, the Romans later changed it to the month of January. This was due to the continual tampering of their calendar, and was done in order to resynchronize it with the sun. ‘January’ was named after the Roman god, Janus. With his two faces, Janus looked forward into the new year with hope and backward into the old year with nostalgia. He was also the protector of beginnings, endings, arches, doorways, doors, and gates. Romans began their year making promises to this god. At

first, their resolutions had a moral theme to them, but after Christianity became the official state religion of the Roman Empire, morality turned into prayers and fasts. Even today, we continue to follow this tradition. Some popular resolutions for teens include: getting healthy, being a better person, performing better in school, and making more money. Though we can sometimes have a hard time keeping our New Year’s resolutions, we won’t have a hard time keeping the tradition. The New Year’s celebration has been around for over for 4000 years, so it’s not that easy to get rid of.

Why is it that at the beginning of each year all types of people decide that for the New Year they need to changes themselves? It’s as if the passage of another year makes you reflect on everything that you don’t like about yourself. Could it be that society and media tell you that you need to change yourself to fit more into the idea of perfection, whatever that may be? Resolutions commonly made around this time are varied but tend to lean toward the idea of self-improvement. This is going to be the year that things change, the year you make things happen. Start that daily jog, finish reading that book. In the New Year, people have an inclination to make themselves become a happier person, to stifle the depressing elements in life. Some people want to improve how they treat the people around them, and express the gratitude they’ve bottled up thus far. Others look to find new connections, maybe a new friend or a new flame. Getting more involved in the community; performing well in school; being a better sibling, student, or friend; pursue a new job; just take life easy and slow down a little;
these are but a sample of the paths of progress people are drawn to in the turn of the year. Many people in our lives, maybe even students in these halls, have probably made some variation of these resolutions. But why? Why is it that we are not ultimately content with the person we are, why do we feel like changing some of the foibles that make us unique and special, however flawed? Do New Year’s resolutions necessarily come from a desire for improvement, or from discontent? On one hand, they can help people make adjustments that are needed. But they can also make people feel like they need to change things about themselves that do not need to be changed. If there is something that you like about yourself but others don’t, should you really let those opinions influence you? New Year’s resolutions can have both positive and negative effects on people: the positive is that they can make you a better person in the end, but the negative is that they can take away great things from a person and make them feel inferior about their what makes them distinct. Why people change themselves is still a partial mystery but what we do know is that the effects can either be great or unnecessary.

FISCAL CLIFF Daniel LIEBE The Howler
It seems that every time you turn on the news, you’re hearing about the so-called “Fiscal Cliff” that’s been going on in the United States. The Fiscal Cliff is the sharp decline in the budget deficit that could have occurred beginning in 2013 due to increased taxes and reduced spending in the United States. Many people would agree with the idea that the 112th congress was the least progressive and most passive-aggressive congress in the nation’s history. Ultimately they have a hard time agreeing or compromising on political issues, and aren’t passing as many laws at the rate the American taxpayers would like to see. Though the general public widely understands that these elected officials are in public service for a reason, one
What does the Wii U do for you? John KIM The Howler
Remember six years ago when you desperately begged your parents for that brand new Nintendo Wii system you saw on a TV commercial for Christmas? Once you picked up the controller and strapped on the wrist-strap, you knew there was no turning back. From there on, it was just the TV, the controller, and your body. And the rest is history. Now, here we are in the present day as Nintendo has officially released a new generation
console, known as the Wii U. What does the U stand for? Of course, it could stand for many things, such as ultimate, undeniable, unique, or unbeatable? But the real question we should be considering is what makes it good? What can the new Wii do for U? Perhaps the most significant highlight of this new and exciting console is the all-new Wii U GamePad, which is a controller that also features a 6.2 inch 854 x 480 resolution single-touch screen in the centre, which primarily serves as a secondary screen to the video game. In most cases, it is often used to display maps, a player’s inventory, etc. Is it me, or does the hardware of the this remind me of the old Gameboy Advance? To put it into simple terms, it is basically a fusion of a controller and a tablet. Not only that, the GamePad can also operate as a TV remote,
may argue that their responsibility is to fight for future laws to be passed that benefit the American people. Thus, Congress can ultimately have the potential to change the shape of American society. But when no one party can come to terms or agree on one issue, progress is at a dead-stop. This is therefore the root issue of the Fiscal Cliff. Essentially the Fiscal Cliff is a shortened term used to define when the terms of the proposed Budget Control Act of 2011 are scheduled to be put into place - for instance, taxes, and government spending will be affected. How and when will all of this go into place? Well, it all depended on when the Senate and the House of Representatives got their act acts together and chose to vote on a deal. It was important for
even when it’s turned off. Much like the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 controllers, the dual analog sticks are incorporated. In addition to that, a built-in 1.3 megapixel camera, headphone jack, microphone, and a digital keyboard are also integrate to allow users to take pictures leisurely, listen to music, or write messages without a hassle. One of the downsides to this is the poor battery life of approximately three hours of playing time. It can be charged by plugging in the USB cable that connects to the front of the console. It’s exasperating. Thankfully, it’s not like the Xbox 360 controllers, in which you’d have to replace AA batteries. Another drawback is that these controllers have yet to be sold separately in stores, so if you break it, you’re out of luck – for now. However, a
them to decide on a deal or vote before it was too late (too late was rendered as the beginning of the New Year). So what would be the ultimatum if the United States government was unable to go over the Fiscal Cliff and decrease the country’s budget defecit in the New Year? Well, many have speculated that the U.S. economy could be downgraded once again. Back in August of 2011 the United States credit rating was reduced from AAA to AA+. Why? A lack of leadership and Congress’s inability to reach a compromise are seen as two of the major factors that have lead to this issue. At this same time, one of the top international credit rating agencies decided to downgrade. On August 5th,
2011, Standard and Poor’s lowered the nation’s credit rating. America did not appear as stable as it had in the past. Granted, it was then, and still remains, the world’s largest economy. However, things in the future could change and the credit rating agency was not willing to absorb the risk. Now, nations like China and Japan are slowly creeping up in the global rankings as 2nd and 3rd. The Unites States is in need of getting its act together. If it wants to survive and retain its status as number 1 on the world’s economic scale, then they’ll have to show the world they can prepare themselves and handle the financial obstacles that are still headed their way. Or else, big business will invest elsewhere; it’s as comlicated and as simple as that.
more traditional and standardized controller for the Wii U is available, except you likely will not be getting the same experience as the GamePad. In terms of the actual physical structure and hardware of the Wii U, it shares a similar resemblance to its predecessor, the original Wii, except it’s a tad longer and the edges have been rounded. With regard to the hard drive, the consoles come in two types: an 8 GB and 32 GB (deluxe version) in white and black, respectively. Furthermore, thanks to the four USB slots (2 in front, 2 in rear), players can now add an external hard drive of any kind up to 2 TB, which is about 2000 gigabytes. Best of all, the Wii U is backward compatible with the original Wii, meaning that it is possible to play some of your favourite, classic Wii games.

Many childhood memories were remembered on January, 11th when the brand Hostess went bankrupt. For those who don’t know, they were the genius behind old time snacks like “Ding Dongs,” “Ho Hos” and the classic, “Twinkies.” I haven’t met many people who don’t know what a Twinkie is, but let’s jump into the history of the one of North America’s favourite snacks. It all began in 1930 in Kansas City, Missouri, where Hostess was founded as Interstate Bakeries. Paul McCartney’s scorcher of a show singes BC place’s newly built roof. On November 25th, 2012, Sir Paul McCartney performed at BC place with a “scorcher” of a show. Featuring spectacular fireworks going off during the popular song, “Live and Let Die,” the explosives hit the roof of BC Place, bounced off an acoustic fiberglass lining, hitting two retractable pannels, each costing over $15 million each. The newly-installed roof cost more than $458 million, and it is not clear whether or not the scorch marks can be simply cleaned off the re-
tractable panels, or if they are permanently a part of the once white roof. The cause for the pyrotechnic failure is largely because the technicians for the show did not calculate the height of the roof, which lead the flaming fireworks to smack into the fiberglass liner. At least fifteen large balls of sparkly fire smacked into the fiberglass liner. The fire captain covering the concert was across the field from the explosive experts control panel when the fireworks catastrophe occurred, and by the time he made it to the control panel the fireworks had ended.

INTERACTIVE JOURNEY INTO YOUR FUTURE AS A STUDENT Choosing your future is hard, for you must consider all your options and what you wish to do with your time, your life. Many factors play into the path of your future: classes, friends, teachers, grades and, most importantly, lifestyle. It’s crunch time. With semester’s end, final exams, and university applications reaching their deadlines, there’s a lot to contend with. You must now choose study habits, between school and social life, and act on planning your future. These are decisions that you will make only once in your lifetime, so choose wisely.
Scenarios 1. You have a final project due for English class. It’s worth 15% of your grade and will dictate whether you get an A or a B. You’re about halfway done and basically know the material. You could finish it now, but you would much rather go out to a movie with all your friends. (a) Do a really quick job and roughly finish the project, and you think you’ll be able to find time in the beginning of class to finish and hand it in. (b) Stay home from the movie and complete the project thoroughly and completely. Go over the assignment sheet and make sure you have all aspects included.
They wait for the rays of the sun to arrive and a new life in the warm breeze of spring.
(b) Apply for this university, but following your application, write to the administrative staff telling them about yourself and explain why you would be a remarkable student. (c) Apply at this university, and count on getting in. If not - you don’t yet have a back-up plan.
Key (a) You are a decent student with average grades, and you will live a successful life. High school was a fun experience and you got accepted into the local university.
(c) Your social life is more important than a project. There are always other projects to conteract it. 2. It’s January. The new year has started but classes are coming to an end. You have two provincials in exam week. With twelve days of class left, you are still learning the curriculum. Your teacher says to start studying now, but you still have homework in other classes.
(c) High school was tough for you, and you’re leaving without a reference. With no post secondary plans and no solid plan for the future, you feel as though four years of opportunity were wasted. You’ve lost your goals and dreams to the lure of a social life and good times.
(a) You do your other homework first and don’t study. You figure studying a few days in advance will be enough and your favorite show is on television.
You may feel that this doesn’t relate to you that you’re still too young to be thinking about post secondary - but the study habits you adopt in your four years of high school will dictate your future. They will decide your grades, your relations, and your post secondary options. It is important to be aware of your future. Take the time you have to expand your knowledge and increase your options as a student. Changing one’s study habits and attitude will change the future. It’s never too late for a new beginning.
(c) Why study when the television is so much more interesting? You don’t do any of your homework and watch television instead.
As winter blooms the flowers wilt, slowly sinking into the ground, they wait. They wait for the sound of soft footsteps over dew grass.
(a) Give up on the dream and apply at other universities closer to home.
(b) Your grades are impeccable, your practice of time management and self determination have landed you at the top of your class. You have also transferred these techniques into a sport, and you are excelling in that field as well as your schooling. You have been accepted in the university of your dreams and picked up some scholarships along the way.
(b) You do your other homework, and put aside thirty minutes a night to study for the exams. Time management is your friend.
Megan WENSLEY The Howler
3. You have found one university; it’s far away, located in another country. You have the grades to get in, but you don’t have enough money to take any chances. This looks like the university for you, it meets all your needs. The only problem is they only take a select few international students.

What do your dreams really mean? Tara Cooke The Howler
What Dreams May Come
Being Chased
You are running through a dense forest as trees claw at you from the darkness. You can hear the footsteps behind you as they match the rapid rhythm of your heart beat. Darting through the denseness, your foot gets caught on a stray tree root and you fall hard to the ground. You hear the footsteps steadily get closer as you struggle to get up and then you feel hot breath on your neck as panic and dread consume your body. Suddenly, you wake in a cold sweat, you breath in short hasty gasps.
An exceedingly popular dream is where your heart is pounding as you run for your life while being chased by an unknown attacker. This dream may indicate that you are avoiding a person or a situation. It is also a metaphor of insecurity. You may also be feeling jealousy or anger or engaging in self destructive behaviours in your waking life. Chasing dreams may be the subconscious’s way of coping with stress or phobias.
What do dreams mean? Do they signify something more significant about our lives that only the subconscious is able to manifest? Dr. Sigmund Freud stated “there is a psychological technique which makes it possible to interpret dreams and, if that procedure is employed, every dream reveals itself as a psychical structure which has meaning and which can be inserted at an assignable point in the mental activities of waking life.” Dream analysis is the process of using human psychology to interpret dreams and can show you insight into your well-being and difficult life situations.
Falling, Falling, Falling The most common dream that fills people’s minds as their head hits the pillow is the falling dream. If you dream of free falling at incredibly fast speeds with an endless background of blue, most experts agree your sub-conscious is implying that something in your life may be going in a steep downward spiral. You may be overwhelmed with tasks and a lack of balance and/or power. It may also signify insecurities, anxieties and fear of failing at school, work or relationships. It may indicate low self-esteem or feeling guilty. Contrary to popular myth, you will not die if you do not wake up before hitting the ground.
Rags to Riches Gripping handfuls of money, you dance around like a buffoon with a ecstatic grin plastered across your face. Gaining money is popular dream which may mean that you may have or recently had a great triumph in your goals. It may also indicate a future abundance. Receiving money may represent self-confidence and accomplishments, belief in yourself, strong values or success in love.
I Dream of Jeannie Another prevalent dream is one of a childhood friend that you haven’t been in contact with for many years. Experts believe this particular dream can serve as a warning that you may stumble back into old habits and behaviours. It may also indicate that you have become overwhelmed with pressure and your mind is seeking to go back to a more carefree time.
Mental Dental There are also a multitude of inexplicable dreams after which we wake up wondering why our sub-consciousness ever conceived such horror, such as your teeth shattering or falling out of your mouth. This disturbing dream may be a metaphor indicating that your life is out of control and you feel powerless and confused. It may mean that you
Fun Facts about Dreams 1. One-third of your life is spent sleeping. In an average lifetime, you will have spent a total of about six years of it dreaming. That is more than 2,100 days spent in a different realm! 2. Dreams have been here as long as mankind. Back in the Roman Era, profound and significant dreams were submitted to the Senate for analysis and interpretation. 3. Everybody dreams. Simply because you do not remember your dream does not mean that you do not dream. In fact, you have several dreams during a normal night of sleep. 4. Dreams are indispensable. A lack of dream activity may imply some protein deficiency or a personality disorder. 5. On average, you can dream anywhere from one to two hours every night. Moreover, you can have four to seven dreams in one night. 6. Blind people do dream. Whether visual images appear in their dreams depend on whether they were blind at birth or became blind later in life. But vision is not the only sense that constitutes a dream. Sound, tactility, and smell become hypersensitive for the blind and their dreams are based on these senses.

school test or work assignment. You may have anxiety about trying to impress others or a new relationship, or you fear not living up to your own expectations.
The Naked Truth
Dreams analysis uses metaphors to assign meaning and symbolism to the workings of the subconscious mind. As Carl Jung stated in The Meaning of Psychology for Modern Man, “The dream is the small hidden door in the deepest and most intimate sanctum of the soul, which opens to that primeval cosmic night that was soul long before there was conscious ego and will be soul far beyond what a conscious ego could ever reach.” Sweet dreams.
Almost everyone has had the iconic dream of walking into a public place completely and utterly naked. Being unclothed in public can suggest that you have a fear of exposure and of being wrongly judged by others. It can signify the fear of ridicule and low self-worth. You may be feeling vulnerable, defenceless, or rejected. It can also mean that you are underprepared for a
7. Five minutes after the end of the dream, half the content is forgotten. After ten minutes, 90% is lost. 8. The word dream stems from the Middle English word “dreme” which means joy and music. The original meaning of the word “nightmare” was a female spirit who besets people at night while they sleep. 9. Men tend to dream more about other men, while women dream equally about men and women. 10. Studies have shown that your brain waves are more active when you are dreaming than when we are awake. 11. Dreamers who are awakened right after Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep are able to recall their dreams more vividly than those who slept through the night. 12. If you are snoring, you cannot be dreaming. 13. Nightmares are common in children, typically beginning at around age 3 and occurring up to age 7-8. 14. In a poll, 67% of Americans have experienced Deja Vu in their dreams, occurring more often in females than males. 15. According to a research study, the most common setting for dreams is your own house.

LINCOLN: A WearY Hero’s One Last Call The theatre was eerily quiet as I sat in the slightly uncomfortable and stained cinema chair. The clock hands slowly moved to midnight, as this two and a half hour journey commenced. The film was directed by Steven Spielberg, the all-time fantastic director who released recordbreaking, blockbuster films in the past. However, if one might not be interested in politics or old men in wigs angrily berating each other, this movie might bore you to the death. Nevertheless, I proudly put two thumbs up for this wonderful retelling of a tired, yet wholly spirited old hero’s last fight for freedom and equality. The movie captures the audience’s attention with a violent battle scene in a rainy, muddy pool filled with the bloody stench of rotting flesh. Amongst them, in the
stormy drizzle, stands Lincoln: the man who started it all. Sadly, for war movie maniacs out there, this would be depressing since the setting is not about fighting and gut-spilling, but it is about the time of struggle in Lincoln’s determined attempts to pass the 13th amendment - the bill to restrict the act of slavery. Those of the South who needed as many workers they could get supported slavery as means to boost their economy, while those of the North opposed slavery since the concept was considered a barbaric act that disrupts social equality. Before the story devled into Lincoln’s character, the audience comes to understand the central conflict that plagued the president during this time in his leadership. Did the North fight for the abolish-

ment of slavery to regain their rights and freedoms? While the movie emphasizes Lincoln’s honourable patriotism and love for his people, it also shows the undeniable dirtiness and selfishness found in politics and government. In the end, I realized that Lincoln was not just simply a president who can be described as a decisive, charismatic leader. In fact, he is the opposite of an idealized superior. With the numerous lines wrinkling his face and the hunched back that symbolizes the great weight and responsibility he takes on, Lincoln is weary and determined man who puts his all and dying spirit into passing the 13th amendment. Throughout the film, he moved in slow, tired motions, while yearning for warmth and consolation from his family. It is notable that the
character of Lincoln is also portrayed not only as a president, but as a father and a husband as well. The subtle, yet grave inner conflict he goes through concerning the indecisive matter of whether or not to place his own welfare and the peace of his home over his goals and passions as a leader. Several times in the movie, Mrs. Lincoln often pressures Abraham to forget the passing of the 13th amendment to stop the ongoing civil war which already took the life of one of their sons. The heaviness in Lincoln’s ailing heart can be felt through the wide movie screen as he keeps questioning himself on whether this is truly the right way to serve his citizens and his family. Does the vote for the potential, though not ensured, abolishment of slavery justify the continuous suffering
DOCTOR WHO?
Shauna SUPEENE The Howler
“He’s like fire and ice and rage. He’s like the night and the storm in the heart of the sun. He’s ancient and forever. He burns at the centre of time and can see the turn of the universe, and he’s wonderful.” That’s the Doctor for you, star of the hit BBC series Doctor Who, as described by co-star Martha Jones. But what’s the show about, anyway? In essence, the show depicts the life and times of an alien (a human look-alike timelord from the far off planet of Galifrey) who travels through time and space in a space ship disguised to look like a 1960s phone box. When he’s in the mood, the Doctor also picks up human companions to accompany his adventures, and there’s usually heightened drama surrounding the subject of his accomplice. At times, the
show can be depicted as the very pinnacle of creation, and at other times the embarrassment of science fiction. In other words, when it’s good, oh it is so good! But when it’s bad, it is really, really bad. The phenomenon known as Doctor Who has managed to stay on the air for so long (since the 1960s) because of the constantly changing companions and the fictional process known as ‘regeneration’. This occurs, only to the doctor, when the plot depicts his ‘death’. Only, he never dies! In a bright burst of yellow time energy, the doctor gains a new body, thus, a new actor! This means the show can continue for as long as the producers like the idea! So far, there have been 11 doctors. Favourites include David Tennant(10), Matt Smith(11), and Tom Baker.
Because of the long run time, the fan base of Whovians has grown into the thousands. Everything ‘fan-made’ imaginable, has already been done by the ever loyal Whovians. This includes everything from art, parodies, and goes as far as its own genre of music, Time Lord Rock. The innovators behind this music originated on YouTube, and call themselves ‘Chamelion Circuit’. To any readers who are not also Whovians, this tantalizing TV series is highly recommended. Though, you may be wary to take a taste, which is understandable as time lords can be quite intimidating. Fear not! It’s not all death, destruction and alien invasions. Doctor Who can also be described as a hilariously amusing blend of humanity’s great history (as it is a time machine),
science (though not always accurate or logical), and a great deal of personal epiphanies and dramatic endings. Steven Moffat, the show’s current writer, has become famous for killing beloved companions, and rendering devastated Whovians immobile, due to a flood of tears and depression, over fictional characters and their wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey plotline. Now, young ones, you will be left with some words before you depart. Dingle dangle yekkedy doo yikkedy ya ping pong lippy tatty too tah. The wise words of Doctor Number Ten. Go forth, and spread the word, the question, and the silence. Doctor Who? Artist / Shauna SUPEENE

The next best thing is on its way, and Will.I.Am raises the bar as he brings forth his next protégé, Britain’s own Cheryl Cole. Brayden HAYDAMACK The Howler
Every year around this time, Black Eyed Peas front man Will.I.Am announces his protégé for the year, and this year I was extremely excited as the singer/producer took to his Twitter to write: “Got something fresh for you guys coming soon, stay tuned.” So the time came, and this year’s protégé was Cheryl Cole. Born in Newcastle, United Kingdom, twenty nine year old Cheryl was one of those girls who stood out from the crowd when performing as a child. She was the kind of person you knew was going to be a superstar. After years of attempting to make a break in the industry, in 2002, Cole tried out for the British TV show, “Pop Stars: The Rivals.” Concluding her effort as one of the winners, this boost in fame resulted in the formation of one the UK’s biggest girl groups, Girls Aloud. In 2008, after having fifteen top ten singles, Cole and the girls decided to put the group to the side and temporarily work on other projects. The most anticipated album of the bunch was Cole’s debut solo album “3 Words.” The album sat at number one on the UK chart for four weeks, while her debut single “Fight For This Love” spent a whopping five weeks at number one on the UK Singles Chart. To follow the track of success, the album managed to go platinum selling 300,000 copies in only one month. The album also spanned two other top five singles including, “3 Words” and “Parachute.” She also supported the album on tour as she opened for The Black Eyed Peas for the European leg of their tour. Then in 2010, Cole released her second album, “Messy Little Rain Drops.” The album shot right to number one again, producing two number one singles: “Promise This” and “The Flood.” After two years in hiatus, Cole released her third and most current album, “A Million Lights.” The album spawned a fourth number one single, “Call My Name.” Followed by multiple hits, such as, “Under The Sun,” “Screw You,” and her upcoming single, “Ghetto Baby,” Cole also embarked on her first headlining tour this past summer titled “The Million Lights Tour.” Cole is also currently working with her Girls Aloud bandmates for a comeback album and tour, both scheduled for later this year; and to top it off, a brand new studio album is currently in the works and is predicted for a summer 2013 release. So from the looks of it, Will.I.Am is pretty accurate in his statement of 2013 being the year of Cheryl. With her beaming vocals and his incredible producing, the duo is definitely a threat for anyone who stands in this British Bombshell’s way.
Hardcore for hunger A youth-organized charity concert pushes forward to gain community support in raising funds for the Food Bank. Mason MCMORRIS The Howler
On January 5th, 2013, a concert was held at the Tom Lee Music Hall in Vancouver. Not just an ordinary concert, though, this was a concert for a charitable cause. A show held for the Greater Vancouver Food Bank, consisting of local bands from less accessible genres, ranging from Hardcore to Death Metal to classic Punk Rock, the event was known as Hardcore Against Hunger. All profit from the concert went to the Food Bank, as well as donations of either non-perishable food or money - and $800 was raised for the cause. The mind behind the planning and creation of this show was Shira Gallacher, a 16 year-old from North Vancouver and vocalist of post-hard-
core band Her Last Letter. The concert was Shira’s first ever experience setting up and planning a show, and despite his inexperience, he managed to create a professional environment and a successful show for an admirable cause. Shira began planning the show in August 2012, and despite the original venue, The Rickshaw Theatre, cancelling the planned date of the show due to issues with event licenses, Shira kept at it. The venue and date change was only a minor setback, and Shira was able to secure the Tom Lee Music Hall (only a short distance from the original venue) for January 5th. Shira plans to hold more shows in the same vein as Hardcore Against Hunger in the near future, and to continue raising money for the Greater Vancouver Food Bank. Eight bands played at the show, all of varying genres, and the crowd reaction was very positive. The first band to play was Abbotsford-based metalcore band, Beginnings, and they were followed shortly thereafter by genre-bending metal band, Infinite Illness. Third to play was progressive death metal band, Baryon, who sur-
prised the audience with high energy and technically proficient playing. They were followed by the band, Her Last Letter, who were a departure from the brutality of the band before them. Soon after, metalcore band, Deception Falls, took the stage, featuring Bateman’s own Mason Bright - his last show with the band. Sharing two members with Deception Falls, metalcore band, Galactic Pegasus took the reins and got the crowd going as they played their set. Headlining the show was Tacoma-based hardcore band, Prestige, who travelled across the border to put on a show to remember. By the end of the show $738.20 was raised, as well as many cans of nonperishable food items. Later on in the night, a final donation was made by Art Hovanessian to bring the count to an even $800 - a feat accomplished by the help of much hard work and many kind people donating time and money to a worthy cause. An incredible concert for an incredible cause. Be sure to keep your eyes open for similar shows in the future. Come out and support the local music scene - support a good cause.

Fashion DIARY check out the new fashion trends emerging in 2013.
January is everyone’s excuse to start the New Year with a clean slate. Whether it is a new perspective, a new challenge, or a new style, we all like a chance to change our lifestyles up a bit. This January, decide to experiment with some new styles and trends that will develop a new version of you.
Tights & BOOTS In the last year, tights have come in designs ranging from floral to Aztec designs. However, this year, experiment with Ombré tights. Ombré is a technique in which one colour fades into another colour.
trends in tops The first month of the year is one of our coldest months, so it always important to dress appropriately. Knitted sweaters are comfortable, easy to wear, and you can pair them with a pair of jeans or leggings. Just make sure your leggings are thick enough! A new trend that slowly began to emerge at the end of last year is “Colour Block” long-sleeved shirts or sweaters. Colour block is when two or more colours have been used on the piece of clothing to either contrast or enhance the other colour. Most of these designs are set in stripes. Another major trend this year is shirts that have studded shoulders or collars. They don’t have to be spikey studs! With a little accent of silver or gold studs on a sweater’s shoulder or button-up shirt’s collar, it adds a touch of “rebel”. Instead of wearing a regular cardigan, why not try a different style of cardigan? Waterfall cardigans have a draped, longer front and a shorter back. They offer comfort, uniqueness, and a chance to use your cardigan as a blanket in class if you get cold. Graphic sweaters are a cool way to express your interests or designs you enjoy. Some examples of prints are hearts, animals, triangles, circles, and Aztec. It’s up to you which design you choose but make it unique!
With the chilly weather we get in January, we try to find ways to keep our feet warm. If you own a pair of kneehigh boots or Combat boots, add a pair of wool socks, or even knee-high socks that you can bunch up at the top. If your socks have a little accent of frills, or a little logo, it makes it all the more stylish.

extra tips A new colour to experiment with is mint green! By wearing shirts, pants, sweaters, dresses, skirts, shoes, purses and shoes of this colour, you will start a new trend! It’s a nice, pastel colour and pairs up perfect with anything black, dark green, and white. You don’t have to change your look in the New Year, but doing so will help inspire you change other aspects in your life. And who knows? It could be the best decision you’ll make! Happy New Year!
