Sweet deal on new public works yard a step closer After five years, the city is ready to redevelop former ‘Candy Land’ property Jennifer Feinberg The Progress

Big changes are coming to the city-owned site on Luckakuck Way in Chilliwack. The property will be the new Operation Centre, housing utilities, purchasing and public works for City of Chilliwack. That move will enable the over-capacity local RCMP detachment to expand into the old public works facility on Kiernan Drive. It’s a plan that’s been in the works for several years, said Mayor Sharon Gaetz. “We’re thankful the dominoes stood up for this one,” she said. The concrete structure between Lickman and Evans Road on the Luckakuck site went up in 2005. It was phase one of the doomed Candy Land theme park project. The shell has sat unused for years, spurring many to ask what the ultimate use of the property would be, she said. Now a plan to re-purpose it for the new public works yard is moving ahead, with permission obtained from the Agricultural Land Commission for city use of the agricultural property. A request for expressions of interest (RFEI) to make the site changes and building additions was issued last week and closes Feb. 8. That means they’re finally ready to make an estimated $5.2 million in site improvements and the money has already been budgeted for in the long-term capital plan. The original vision by Candy Land Entertainment Corp. for a candy-based theme park was unveiled by Bill Coombes of Chilliwack with much fanfare at city hall in 2003, with MLAs and economic development officials nearby. But the theme park never materialized when the plan failed to attract major investors. Phase two never went ahead after the concrete shell and other site improvements were completed. Some residents in rural Chilliwack are hopping mad about changes to their mailboxes that Canada Post is demanding in the dead of winter. And if the changes are not made by Jan. 25 their mail won’t be delivered. Diane Paterson on Chilliwack Central said she got a notice from Canada Post this week telling her to raise her mailbox to 42 inches — or else. “If I don’t get my mailbox

raised by Jan. 25, then they don’t deliver my mail,” she said. But the 64-year-old wondered how Canada Post expects seniors to dig a hole in the frozen ground in the middle of winter. “This is just insane what’s going on here,” she said. However, it appears that Canada Post is now backing off in Paterson’s case, and she will be able to wait until the spring thaw to raise her mailbox. Paterson did not know how many other residents received notices from Canada Post, and

whether they will be getting the same “spring thaw” notice. Canada Post officials in Chilliwack and Ottawa did not return phone calls to answer why the changes are needed and how many residents are affected. But Dolores Roberts on Prairie Central said she was told unofficially that 135 notices have been sent to residents living on Prairie Central, Chilliwack Central, Annis Road and Gibson Road. “I’m one of the 135 they’ve singled out,” she said. But in Roberts’ case the height of the mailbox was not

the issue, but rather installing magnets so the mailbox can be opened by the mailman without getting out of his car. “I found out it’s for when the regular Canada Post delivery people are on vacation, and (replacement drivers) don’t have right-hand vehicles like the regular mailman,” she said. The replacement drivers will have a long pole to deliver the mail without getting out of the truck, she said. “I won’t get my mail delivered, if I don’t have (the magnets) put in by Jan. 29,” she said. Rare war medal find coming home to Chilliwack Quick action and financial support from the federal government has helped the Chilliwack Museum and Historical Society secure a unique and historic set of war medals and bring them back to Canada. The medals – all once awarded to members of the Coote family – were put up for auction in Norfolk England in late December. When the museum learned of planned sale, it began an aggressive effort to secure the necessary funding to bid on the collection. “It was an intense four days,”

said Museum Director Ron Denman. “We had to make the case that these medals were of local, provincial and national significance in order to qualify for any funding.” He said the staff at the federal Movable Cultural Property’s branch were incredibly helpful and processed the paperwork in four days when it normally takes about three months Described as “extraordinary and scarce Canadian Expeditionary Force medals,” the collection was hailed by Chilliwack MP Mark

Strahl as an important part of Canada’s historic identity. “I am thrilled that an important piece of our history is coming home to Chilliwack and that we can honour the Coote family’s military service,” said Strahl. Paul Ferguson, the Museum’s Heritage Collections Manager, contacted a military medals expert in England who assisted in the authentication of the medals and placed a bid for the medals at the auction house. The auction took place on December 19 and the museum bid of £2,000 was suc-

cessful. The collection consists of 12 medals awarded to Lieutenant Colonel Andrew Leslie Coote and his son Captain Ian Vernon Coote of Chilliwack for their military service. It also includes a written account from Lieutenant Russel “Ginger” Leslie Coote — Andrew Coote’s second son — documenting his remarkable wartime experiences. A regional gravel removal plan may be on its last legs after the BC Stone, Sand & Gravel Association pulled out of a proposed pilot program at the Fraser Valley Regional District. But FVRD officials and Abbotsford/Mission MLA Randy Hawes believe they can still salvage the tripartite agreement that was 10 years in the making. Paul Allard, the gravel association’s executive director, confirmed Wednesday that “due to lack of progress” in implement-

ing the plan, the association has formally withdrawn from the Fraser Valley Aggregate pilot Project (APP). “We thought the plan was a pretty simple solution,” he said, to the gravel industry’s need for a stable supply of gravel, the concerns of homeowners who feared the opening of gravel pits in their backyards and the legal quagmire facing the FVRD in court. The APP designated areas where gravel mining would be permitted, where it would not be permitted, and where it might be permitted under certain conditions.

Currently, gravel operations can open up a quarry anywhere, as long as they have the approval of the B.C. mines inspector. Allard said the APP “has grown into a monster” instead, and he doesn’t see any way the plan can be resurrected, “not at this point.” But MLA Randy Hawes said the “delay lies with the government” and “I am working to get this back on track, and I believe it can happen.” Yale area director Dennis Adamson, a vocal critic of the APP, agreed the plan is not dead - but he wished it was.

“I hope it does die, but I fear removal of the gravel industry (from the APP) isn’t going to end it,” he said. FVRD chair Sharon Gaetz said the fate of the APP is now in the hands of the B.C. government, but she also believes the project will continue “We are not throwing up our hands and walking away,” she said, just because the industry has withdrawn from the process. Officials at the Forests, Mines and Lands ministry were not available to comment on the status of the APP by Wednesday’s deadline.

A Jubilee medal is being awarded posthumously to the late Dorothy Kostrzewa on Feb 7, announced Chilliwack-Hope MLA Gwen O’Mahony. The communityfocused Kostrzewa was chosen last year by a committee of local community members to receive the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for “her long service to Chilliwack and groundbreaking contribution” to women in politics. This year’s severe flu season is killing or hospitalizing far more elderly care home residents than usual, prompting Fraser Health to declare a health hazard and invoke special powers to protect the vulnerable. Anyone going to a residential care or assisted living facility who hasn’t had the flu shot this year must now wear a mask and practise stringent hand hygiene while there, chief medical health officer Dr. Paul van Buynder ordered Tuesday. The infection-prevention directive issued under the Public Health Act applies to all staff, volunteers and visitors. “We’re in the midst of an outbreak, there’s a public health risk and these are frail elderly that need to be protected,” van Buynder said. There have been flu outbreaks at more than 20 long-term residential care homes in Fraser Health so far this year – more than twice as many as in each of the previous two years. “The rate of people who are dying is much higher than in previous years,” van Buynder said, adding flu fatalities so far are triple the number at care homes for the last three years combined. “Well over 500 people have been ill.” There have been more than four times the number of flu-related hospitalizations from long-term care facilities than in a typical flu season, he said. “It doesn’t seem to be as severe in the other health authorities at this stage. It’s a response that’s happening in Fraser because we’ve got much more activity than the others.” Although long-term care residents are

Works yard move in the works Works from Front Parties inked a deal in 2008 that saw the city retain ownership of the nine-acre site at 44390 Luckakuck Way. They negotiated the termination of the long-term lease with the Candy Land proponents, and paid for site improvements that had been made, including the concrete building for $3.1 million. At the time, then mayor Clint Hames told The Progress it was a great deal for Chilliwack because the cost of a feasible works yard site elsewhere would been in excess of $5 million — for the land alone. This allowed them to solve the problem of where to put public works and the RCMP expansion. “To be able to redeem the situation turned it into a positive for Chilliwack,” said Gaetz. City staff had actively been looking for a new yard location to replace the aging pub-

lic works facility on Kiernan Drive, and this one fit the bill. In order to appease the ALC for the non-farm use allowance, a city-owned parcel of proper ty at Island 22 was put into the Agricultural Land Reserve through an inclusion. It was accepted since it provided a net benefit for agriculture. They were then given permission by the ALC to use the Luckakuck Way site for a works yard, considered a non-farm use. At the same time the local RCMP detachment was beyond capacity, and desperately needed a place into which they could expand. They had long ago outgrown the existing space in the Airport Road building and have been bursting at the seams ever since. As a consequence of the public works’ imminent move to the Luckakuck site, it allows the RCMP to move into, and take over the facility on Kiernan Drive.

There is no fixed timeline for the move into the new Luckakuck site, but most of the site prep work is expected to be completed by the end of 2013, with public works, utilities and more will be moving in during the summer of 2014. The RCMP

Two off-duty RCMP officers nab suspect Two off-duty RCMP officers nabbed a would-be car thief in Chilliwack early Sunday morning putting themselves in harm’s way. Police said one of the officers, Staff Sgt. Suki Manj, was on the phone and looking out the front window of his residence when he saw a man riding a bike pull into his driveway at about 5:20 a.m. and start breaking into his truck. “Despite being only in shorts, the officer left his residence in minus 5-degree temperatures to confront the would-be thief,” RCMP Const. Tracy Wolbeck said. After a “lengthy struggle” with the suspect, she said, Manj asked his wife, Cpl. Tammy Hollingsworth, who was also off-duty, to get help. “Neighbours began coming out of their homes to assist the officers,” Wolbeck said, and uniformed police officers soon arrived to arrest a 25-year-old Chilliwack man. Both officers suffered frost-bite to their feet, Wolbeck said, and Manj suffered “severely pulled back muscles” from his struggle with the suspect. The suspect was released from custody and returns to court in February. Manj and Hollingsworth thanked their neighbours for coming to their aid and for putting themselves in harm’s way.

If the federal Conservative government hasn’t already thought about its penchant for omnibus bills in Parliament, it needs to. The Idle No More movement has focused some of its attention on changes to federal legislation like the Navigable Waters Protection Act and Environmental Assessment Act, which are rolled into an omnibus bill. These bills, often part of a budget, give MPs little chance to debate important issues because there are so many items jammed together. The Conservatives did not invent this strategy, but they have honed it to a fine art. Omnibus bills began appearing regularly during the five years the Conservatives governed with a minority, and were often crafted in such a way as to keep at least one opposition party from voting against the government. While this was an understandable legislative strategy, the need for such omnibus bills does not exist when there is a majority government. But the government of Prime Minister Stephen Harper likes the approach, because it limits the usefulness of Parliament and the ability of its critics to draw much public attention. That worked fine when the critics were solely from the opposition parties. But when they are from outside Parliament and are energized by a variety of causes, as is Idle No More, omnibus bills have the potential to do a great deal of harm. The harm comes from emasculating legitimate opposition in Parliament, where differences within a democracy need to be discussed. If too many people believe Parliament doesn’t work any more, and this leads them to do serious damage to Canada’s economy because of their frustrations, omnibus bills become very dangerous. The Conservative government has nothing to fear from its opponents in Parliament. It has a majority, and it should be ready and willing to hear criticism of its plans within an elected assembly. The prime minister would serve the interests of all Canadians if he pledged to restrict or even eliminate omnibus bills for the remainder of this Parliament’s term. Idle No More may be a loose and disorganized movement, but it has the potential to serve as a force for either positive or negative change. The federal government needs to choose a path which is working towards positive change — on all types of issues. Black Press

The inconvenient truth about oil pollution VICTORIA – A study of six northern Alberta lakes conducted by Environment Canada and other scientists was published last week, generating headlines around the world. “Oil sands toxins ‘accumulate in freshwater systems,’” the BBC announced. The headline in The New York Times declared: “Oil sands industry in Canada tied to higher carcinogen level.” The study was reported with similar alarm across Canada. It looked at levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) in lakebed sediment, and found levels measurably higher than natural sources since oil sands extraction began 50 years ago. Most news reports I saw made little or no effort to put this information into context, in terms of the actual risk to humans, fish and other organisms. Some quoted people they knew would scream

bloody murder, because as we in the media are taught, conflict and fear attract an audience. As expected, U.S. environmental groups and their Canadian branch offices ramped up the rhetoric to battle their favourite villain. At least one major Canadian newspaper, The Tom Globe and Mail, FLETCHER did a responsible job. Its report on the study stated “PAH pollution level remains low – on par, at worst, with an urban lake – but is rising.” In fact, five of six lakes tested were far below average contamination of urban lakes. PAH fallout is a daily constant of urban life, from vehicles, industry, and particularly where coal is burned for

electricity. To be clear, there are dozens of different forms of PAH. Some have been shown to increase cancer risk, and some have been linked to (but not proven to cause) infertility, immune disorders and fish mutations. So when you drive your kids to school, stand at the bus stop, or drink a glass of water from Coquitlam Lake or any urban reservoir, you are exposed to PAH pollution from human and natural sources. The risk from this is an ongoing focus of research, but this study confirms one thing: your exposure is likely greater in any urban area than it is downwind of the Alberta oil sands. I argued this point with B.C.’s celebrity environmentalist Tzeporah Berman, who has shuttled back and forth from ForestEthics to Greenpeace in recent years. She took to her

Facebook page to publicize a dramatic call to action from 350.org, one of the most strident climate change advocacy groups in the U.S., selectively using a quote and picture from The New York Times. Our debate turned to greenhouse gas emissions. I argued that this PAH study mirrors the true picture of carbon dioxide emissions, which is that nearly 70 per cent of CO2 from all petroleum comes when you burn the final product in engines and furnaces. In B.C., which doesn’t burn coal for electricity, fully 40 per cent of human-caused greenhouse gas emissions are from transportation. Other sources include home heating and industry. Berman insisted I was wrong, and claimed 70 per cent of Canada’s greenhouse gases come from “heavy industry.” I asked for her source. No response.

A 2010 report by a Royal Society of Canada expert panel calculated that 27 per cent of our country’s fossil fuel emissions come from transportation. Another 16 per cent is from fuels burned for electricity. Five per cent is from oil sands operations. Berman’s figure is conveniently untrue. Greenpeace and the rest of the environmental scare industry want you to believe that stopping Alberta’s oil sands and pipelines would save the planet. Also wrong. It would drive oil demand from the U.S., Venezuela’s oil sands and elsewhere, with little net effect on the climate or pollution.

‘Racism’ could just be rudeness From my travels, I can also tell you that few countries are as welcoming — not just tolerant, but welcoming — to immigrants from all over the world. Most countries pressure immigrants to conform to that country’s dominant culture. Canada encourages diversity, even funding expensive celebrations that invite all cultures to share displays, entertainment, food and more with their fellow Canadians. My young friend, you have a good mind and a world of opportunity here in Canada. Do not let a narrow focus and bitterness direct your life so soon. Talk to your non-immigrant friends and you will discover that their families are facing many of the same issues you and yours are facing. Research this country and others and you will find that Canada is among the best places to make a new start and that there are great opportunities here. The more you look, the more you may realize that the ‘systemic racism’ you see is partly your own interpretation of human problems that we are all facing regardless of race. And, you may find that this realization is much more liberating and empowering in your own life than any righteous anger or government policy could ever be.

My job was to work with the police and flaggers in dealing with traffic control. I read your story in The Progress. And it was very pleasing to read. Not just that it was on page 3. But also that

ed me with disdain. Remember that my skin is white so this is not a racial issue; it is a human failing. I have also dealt with contractors who were respectful, polite and honest. One bad experience does not deserve labeling an entire group of humans. In my life, I have also been discriminated against...because of my gender, my skin colour (white), because I was too young and, more recently, because my hair has turned gray so, I am “too old.” I have even been discriminated against because I am not a recent immigrant and programs were in place to give “affirmative action preference” to recent immigrants from certain regions. (Notice that even the affirmative action was prejudiced towards certain groups within the minorities.) Most of what you have experienced is not racism, just the unfair and unpleasant side of human behaviour that we have all experienced at many points in our lives. Being an immigrant to any new country or culture is not easy. And nowhere in the world is there any country that does as much for new immigrants as Canada. Don’t take my word for that. Climb onto the Internet and research the government and community sponsored programs here and in other countries. No other country in the world has as many programs... nor programs that cover so many needs of new immigrants.

In response to Henry Tung’s letter “Feeling the sting of systemic racism,’ I can understand how you can come to such conclusions because each person sees the world through his or her own eyes, assigning reasons based on their interpretation. And, things aren’t always exactly as they appear. I am white and born Canadian and I have experienced exactly the same slights, insults and problems that your family has. Like many people today, I am working for basic hourly wages despite having post-secondary education. This is not racial discrimination; it is a depressed economy and tight job market. It is affecting professionals, tradespeople...ever yone. Like many, I am working “below my wage level” because I have bills to pay and this is honest work that pays those bills. Like your father, I have had to defend myself against unfair harassment complaints. In both cases, the complainers were misusing the harassment complaint system to get something else they wanted. Yet, the onus was on me to prove my innocence. Both times, the accusations were completely dismissed but only after I fought to prove them false. By the way, both of the complainers were as white as I am. This sort of thing is often not a racial issue, just a human issue. Like your family, I have dealt with contractors who tried to disregard my wishes and treat-

Coote served with the 47th as did his son Ian who received a Mention in Despatches, an award in recognition of gallant and distinguished services in the field. Leslie Coote continued to serve with the Canadian militia after the First World War but at the beginning of the Second World War was in England where he observed firsthand the Blitz on the United Kingdom. Returning to Canada he was instrumental in the formation of the Pacific Coast Militia Rangers (PCMR), based on the British Home Guard. The PCMR held responsibilities for home defence and

People who refuse to comply with the order to wear masks and wash with alcohol hand sanitizer will be turned away. “I believe people will do the right thing,” van Buynder said. Health-sector unions last year resisted the provincial government’s infection control policy that required workers to wear masks throughout the flu season if they refused the flu shot. Enforcement of that initiative was put on hold for a year but Fraser Health officials say the region’s order now takes precedence. Unvaccinated care home employees who refuse to wear a mask are to be sent home without pay.

Anti-viral medication is also being given to all residents in care homes with outbreaks to try to prevent serious illness. The risks of flu aren’t limited to the elderly. Van Buynder noted those with chronic disease, pregnant women and the very young are also vulnerable – an 18-month-old baby died recently in Ontario. Flu-related visits to hospital emergency departments are also at the highest level the region has seen in years. The health authority is also urging anyone planning to visit care homes not to go if they feel unwell. Although Fraser Health’s flu vaccination rate improved this year, van Buynder and other public health officials continue to face opposition to their immunization programs. Some online commenters denounced

Tuesday’s announcement as a scare tactic to benefit pharmaceutical firms. Van Buynder said there are strong antivaccination lobbies in pockets of the Fraser region and he’s not surprised those people continue to “ignore the serious consequences of influenza and won’t help protect” vulnerable groups.

“I’m disappointed for the families of the vulnerable who are being hospitalized and who are passing away from vaccine-pr eventable disease and diseases we can inter vene on because they want to push those messages.” More than 75 per cent of full-time health care workers in Fraser are vaccinated.

INFORMATION MEETING Chilliwack Middle School in partnership with Rosedale Traditional School is expanding their Hockey Academy Program through Hockey Canada for the 2013-2014 school year. The program will be open to all males and females who will be in Grade 7-9 next year regardless of what school they are attending but they must belong to a Minor Hockey Association system. The program offers a skill development program for both on and off-ice sessions and will follow a curriculum as outlined by Hockey Canada. It was in these older musical traditions that she found her muse and set out to explore her original music in the context of old time string band sounds. “This music has a profound edge to it – there in the voices and in the playing is the lament we all carry as people trying to get by in this beautiful, terrible world”, says Genest. “Joy and grief are two sides of the same coin. The older music expresses that tension so perfectly.” Genest’s first outing as Annie Lou brought 2010 Juno and WCMA nominations, and this latest release, “Grandma’s Rules for Drinking”, brought nominations for English Songwriter of the Year and

Province questions the takeover of medical test firm The planned buyout of B.C.’s second biggest medical lab company by its larger rival has raised questions over the implications of a near-monopoly in the medical testing field. LifeLabs on Tuesday unveiled plans to buy Surrey-headquartered BC Biomedical Laboratories for an undisclosed price. BC Biomedical has nearly 800 employees, 500 of them in Surrey, and runs 45 labs across the Lower Mainland that handle 32,000 tests daily. Toronto-based LifeLabs has 80 service centres in B.C. and does 44,000 tests per day. B.C. Health Minister Margaret MacDiarmid said she’s notified the federal Competition Bureau that the province wants to closely examine the potential impacts of the deal. “We’re interested because it would mean that one private lab company would have about 95 per cent of the private lab business,” she said. A key concern is whether lab fees paid by government could go up under a single dominant provider, she said.

In 2011-12, LifeLabs billed the Medical Services Plan $125 million, while BC Biomedical billed nearly $80 million. While the two firms have said there are no plans to lay off staff, MacDiarmid is also concerned the two sets of testing centres may be consolidated, reduc8 ing access for patients. “Right now patients in British Columbia have very good access – probably quite a bit better than some of the other provinces.” 8

Three straight against Sprucies

If it’s true that familiarity breeds contempt, the Chilliwack Chiefs and Prince George Spruce Kings will loathe each other by this time next week. In an odd scheduling quirk, the teams face each other three times over the next six days. The Chiefs are in Prince George this weekend for games Friday and Saturday night. They’re back at Prospera Centre Wednesday night. The Chiefs should welcome the moreSprucies schedule, given their record

against PG this season. The teams have met three times, with Chilliwack winning all three. The Chiefs have scored 11 goals in those three games while yielding just two. The last time Chilliwack visited PG, in late November, goalie Mitch Gillam turned in back-to-back shutouts in 6-0 and 2-0 wins. The most recent meeting was last Friday, and it was a lot tougher for the locals. The Spruce Kings gave the Chiefs all they could handle the day

after the BCHL trade deadline. Prince George led 2-1 heading into the final minute. But with Gillam pulled for the extra attacker, newcomer Philip Zielonka put a shot on net, and Spencer Graboski tipped it over Spruce Kings stopper Kirk Thompson to force OT. In overtime, Zielonka took a cross-ice pass from Alex PerronFontaine, and beat Thompson to give Chilliwack the win. The Chiefs enter the weekend sitting second

in the Mainland division at 24-12-1-1. They trail the Surrey Eagles (24-10-1-3) by two points. They lead the third place Spruce Kings (1912-1-6) by five. Individually, Luke Esposito sits two points off the BCHL scoring lead. His 52 points in 38 games trails Langley’s Mario Puskarich, who has 54 in 37. Esposito’s linemate, Austin Plevy, sits eighth in league scoring with 45 points. New Chief Zielonka is 19th in points, but

fifth league-wide in goals. His 22 strikes is five less than league leaders Puskarich and Adam Tambellini. It is possible the Chiefs might get a valuable reinforcement in the lineup this weekend, with Josh Hansen close to returning from injury. Tambellini tops in mid-term report New Surrey Eagle Adam Tambellini is the top-listed BCHL skater in the latest Central Scouting Bureau rankings. The CSB released its mid-term report Monday, highlighting the top North American

prospects heading into the 2013 National Hockey League entry draft. Tambellini, acquired by Surrey from the Vernon Vipers last week, checks in at No. 62. Powell River’s Luke Ripley is very close behind at No. 64. Those grades would put Tambellini and Ripley somewhere in the third or fourth rounds. David Pope, a winger from the West Kelowna

Warriors, is the next highest BCHLer at No. 104. Chilliwack Chiefs defenceman Cooper Rush slides in at No. 132. Prince George defenceman Kevin Guiltinan comes in at No. 141 followed by Victoria Grizzlies blueliner Nolan Jong at No. 150. Vernon Vipers winger Dexter Dancs checks in at No. 154

and Merritt Centennials Dane Birks rounds out the BCHLers at No. 160. On the goaltending side, two BCHL stoppers are listed among the top 35 draft-eligible prospects. Nine Chilliwack Chiefs have been selected in NHL entry drafts. The most recent was Matt Butcher, who was picked by the Vancouver Canucks in 2005.

Chiefs defenseman Cooper Rush was one of eight BCHL players ranked for the 2013 NHL entry draft by the Central Scouting Bureau on Tuesday. Over the years 12 players have been picked directly from the Chilliwack or Langley Chiefs. The highest Chiefs selection was goaltender Mike Minard who went 83rd overall to the Edmonton Oilers in the 1995 draft. Minard went on to play just one game for the Oilers, but he did play 12 seasons of professional hockey. Interesting thing about the one game he played for Edmonton. It was against Calgary and the goalie for the Flames that night, Grant Fuhr, was playing his final NHL game. That list does not include players who played for the Chiefs but were selected after they moved on. The best example of this is Jeff Tambellini. He played two seasons with the Chiefs but because the draft rules were different then, it was best for him not to opt in to the draft after his second season here. Had he done that he would have had to sit out a year of hockey. It was a stupid rule that has since been changed. After a season with the NCAA’s Michigan Wolverines he was selected in the first round (27th overall) of the 2003 draft by the New York Islanders. Quick tangent. You may be thinking “Wait, what do the Langley Chiefs have to do with this? Aren’t they now the Rivermen and

shouldn’t you be looking at the former Quesnel Millionaires who moved here to become the current edition of the Chilliwack Chiefs?” “And what about the Richmond Sockeyes, who moved here in 1990 to become the Chiefs?” Maybe, but no. There is no hard and fast rule for this but when dealing with anything Chiefs alumni related, it’s just former Chilliwack and Langley Chiefs. Nice debut with the Chiefs by Phil Zielonka last week. Acquired from Coquitlam the day before, Zielonka set up the tying goal in the final minute of the third period against Prince George, then scored the winner in overtime. Zielonka certainly has the chance to be one of the better deadline deal acquisitions by Harvey Smyl over the years. What makes this deal interesting is that it was made with a team in the same division. The two players going the other way, Garrett Forster and Ben Israel, are players that we may see a lot of over the next few seasons. A reminder that the Chiefs are sending an overnight fan bus to their games in Salmon Arm and West Kelowna February 1 and 2. Rogers causing trouble for Falcon foes Eric J. Welsh, The Progeress

Eric Rogers smiles when asked how good his Sardis Falcons senior boys basketball team can be. “I haven’t seen a team that we can’t beat if we’re playing well,” he proclaims. Bold words, but jusitified when you look at the players Sardis has and the games that they’ve played. The team is 3-0 in early league play and 12-4 overall (including preseason and tourney play). The most recent rankings by the BC Boys High School Basketball Association has Rogers and his Falcons ninth in the province. Rare air for a school that hasn’t sniffed basketball success in a long, long time. “It’s kind of cool playing on a team with expectations,” Rogers says. “Having people actually coming out to watch our games. We have 300 fans some nights, and that’s awesome.” Sardis coach Kyle Graves has a deep squad in 2013, with two players leading the offensive charge. Rogers is one. Hayden Lejeune is the other. Both have provincial team experience and both have come up the basketball ladder together. “I’m pretty good at getting him the ball for fast breaks and dunks, and we have other plays for just the two of us,” Rogers says. “I pass it in to him, cut to the basket, get the ball back and that’s a layup right there.” “I can see in their eyes sometimes that they’re setting something up,” adds Graves. “I think the other guys know as well, and they kind of get out of their way.” If Lejeune is the tree in the paint, dominating with his height, it is Rogers’ versatility that makes him so potent. He is the classic tweener, big but quick. Standing six-footthree (almost four), he can play forward, venturing into the key to pull down rebounds and drain short jumpers and put-backs. Yet he’s quick enough to play guard, creating huge mis-

matches against smaller opponents. “We’re not a high scoring team, but him being the all-round player he is really helps,” says coach Kyle Graves. “We can send him to the post and he can knock down a shot or make a good pass. And if we need a clutch three pointer, we’ll draw up a play that gets Eric the ball.” Lejeune is much the same way. He is a terror around the basket, throwing down rim-rocking slams from time to time. “It’s pretty cool and the crowd gets hyped up,” Rogers says of the dunks. But the big fella also shows a soft shooting touch when he backs away from the basket. For opposing defences, there’s no easy way to defend these Falcons. Collapse to the basket, and Rogers and Lejeune can light it up from the outside. Press the points and they’ll make you pay in the key. Double Lejeune and Rogers will kill you. Double Rogers and Lejeune will kill you. Double them both

and someone else will step up. “We can attack everywhere because we’ve got good drivers, good shooters and good post players,” Rogers said. “We’re at our best with Hayden in the post, kicking the ball out for threes. But we’re not weak anywhere.” Two elite players can carry a high school team a long way. “The last couple years we had one guy having a really good game and one guy pretty quiet, where this year we’ve got one having a really good game and one having at least an average game,” Graves says. “But to become really good, we need both of them hitting the 20 point mark and firing on all cylinders.” Even with that, against the best of the best, Rogers and Lejeune alone may not be enough to get it done. “If I was coaching against them I’d consider doubling both and leaving one guy to guard the other three players,” Graves laughs. “That’s not to disrespect our other guys, but Hayden and Eric are

that good. And once our other guys get that confidence to knock down shots, we will be really dangerous.” As good as the Falcons have been this year, the best may be yet to come. At last weekend’s Legal Begal tournament at Terry Fox secondary school in Port Coquitlam, Sardis finished 1-2. Underwhelming on the surface. But they lost to the host Ravens and the province’s top-ranked team, the Kitsilaino Blue Demons, and the latter loss was a nail biter. Kits beat the Falcons 76-74 on a buzzer-beater. Sardis did the same to 10th ranked Vancouver College, with Rogers sinking a last second shot to secure a 62-60 win. Rogers believes Sardis can reach another level with a bit more consistency. “We’ll go through spurts when we’re not clicking, and then all of a sudden we’ll get 20 points in five minutes,” he says. “Man for man, we’re deeper and

more skilled than a lot of the teams we face. I think we can make provincials and once we’re there we’ll be a big threat to upset some teams.” Rogers and company face a sizeable test a week today when they host Yale secondary school in a matchup of top 10 teams. The Lions (Abbotsford) are ranked No. 2 in the province, and it has been a long time since a regular season high school b-ball game carried this much importance for a Chilliwack team. “We’ve still got a lot of work to do individually and as a team,” Graves says. “But our goal at the beginning of the year was to make provincials, and right now I think we have a real good shot of doing that.” Tipoff is 8 p.m. Get scores and schedules online at bcboysbasketball.com. l The Falcons and Chilliwack secondary school clash in an alllocal matchup Tuesday at CSS. Unity Christian’s senior boys came out of the Christmas break ranked fifth overall at the 1A level, the highest ranking ever for the school. UC starts two Grade 12s, each standing sixfoot-seven. Kevin VanRyk and Ryan Billsten are rare commodities at the 1A level, and early-season opposition has found them very difficult to deal with. Grade 11 point guard Jon Vugteveen is a provincial calibre athlete when healthy, but an ankle injury has dogged him early in the season. Grade 11 forward Clay Driesen is averaging 19 points per game. The Flames started on fire, going 8-2 through their first 10 with losses to AAA Chilliwack secondary school and No. 3 ranked Keremeos. UC served notice with an impressive 17 point win over AAA powerhouse Maple Ridge. Through early league play, UC dominated 1A opponents, with 41 points their average margin of victory. “The amazing part of our first half success is that we have played through so many injuries,” said UC vice principal Mike Campbell. “We have not had a full starting lineup yet. When we are all healthy, this could easily be the top 1A school in the province.” The Flames have already qualified for provincials by virtue of hosting them. Under UC’s watch, the tournament will take place at the University of the Fraser Valley campus in Abbotsford. This will be UC’s fourth consecutive appearance in provincials. Earl Leger went to be with the Lord on January 10, 2013 at Abbotsford Hospital at the age of 62 LEGER years. Earl was born in St. John, New Brunswick to parents Aurele & Lillian Leger. In 1955 the Canadian Army transferred the family to CFB Chilliwack. As a teenager Earl joined the Air Cadets, eventually earning his pilot’s license. He loved to fly. He married Julie Anne (Skillen) at age 18. In his early 20’s, he logged with his father-inlaw Joe Skillen. Between 1965 to 1977, Earl partnered with parents and brother to run the the Pay-N-Save Gas Station on Yale Rd. In 1977, Earl began his career with BC Corrections which lasted 35 years, ending as a probation officer. His last years were in BC Juvenile Corrections. Earl was an owner with his wife at “Julie Anne’s Art & Custom Framing”. He volunteered 25 years at Chilliwack Fire Department – Hall #1 (later renamed as Hall #6) as well as the Boy Scouts, Kinsmen, and driving bus for Sunday School. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 44 years, Julie Anne; children David & Kathy Leger and Roseanne & Richard Jones; grandchildren Mitchel Leger, Tiffani Leger, Olivia Leger, Rian Wademan, Brandon Leger; brother Ron Leger and his children Sheryl and Brian; the large extended Skillen family of Don & Rose Ross, Annette & George Sanders, Edwin & Diana Skillen, Michelle & Al Zielstra, Joe Skillen Jr., Karen & Jay and all their families; and special little friend Lorenz Pentz. He was predeceased by his son Richard Leger in 2001. Viewing will be held from 7 to 9 pm on Thursday, January 17 at Woodlawn Mt. Cheam Funeral Home, 45865 Hocking Ave, Chilliwack. Maurice Guy Demers slipped away peacefully at the age of 93 on January 9, 2013 at ChilliDEMERS wack General Hospital. He lived his life to the fullest and he never complained. Maurice was born in Montreal, PQ on May 20, 1919 and moved to Chilliwack in 1984. He was predeceased by his wife Therese (Touchet ) Demers who passed on March 3, 2008. He is survived by his sister Jeanne Demers, of St Leonard, PQ and several nieces and nephews living in Canada and the US. He will be missed Rest in Peace.
