Minor Hockey Week ........................11-14
Starting Feb. 15 Golden residents will be able to upgrade their B.C. CareCards to the new high-tech cards, which will be combined with the B.C. driver's licence. Those who do not possess a driver's licence will be given a similar B.C. Services Card. The health ministry announced the new card program in May 2011, after a review showed there were up to 9.1 million B.C. Care-
Cards in circulation, even though the total population of B.C. is only 4.5 million. The goal is to phase out the millions of CareCards in the hands of non-residents. Added security measures include a photo, chip, and expiry date. The government hopes this will protect people against identity theft and fraud. These new cards will eventually be replacing the old CareCards, but there is no need to rush in to get your new card. The government's plan is to change over all eligible B.C.
residents between the ages of 19 and 74 over the next five years. There is no requirement to get the new card until your driver's licence needs to be renewed, and if you have no licence, you have until 2018 to replace the CareCard. All newborns after Feb. 15 will also be issued the new cards. Re-enrolment for these cards can be done wherever you get you driver's licence renewed. Continued on page 4
