Rossland garnering major media attention New York Times ranks it among places to visit and Canada AM set to broadcast during carnival BY GUY BERTRAND Times Staff
The Golden City is shining like a diamond in the eyes of the media. Fresh off winning Powder magazine’s North America-wide Ski Town Throwdown, Rossland is garnering more attention nationally and in one of the largest newspapers in the U.S. The New York Times travel section listed Rossland number-eight
overall in its feature of “46 places to go in 2013.” Meanwhile Canada AM, the longrunning national morning show on CTV, is coming to Rossland for the winter carnival on Jan. 25. “We’re on a really good roll with all this stuff now,” said Deanne Steven, executive director for Tourism Rossland. “It really does make a big difference when you have something new to talk about. Combine that with the fact that our downtown has never looked better. It has exceeded everybody’s expectations. “People have been super upbeat here and it’s showing.”
The New York Times article is just the latest acknowledgement of Rossland’s appeal. Steven explained that in October’s ski show circuit, Tourism BC organized a series of interviews between tourism representatives and reporters in Seattle. “It’s kinda like speed-dating with journalists.” She credited the terrain expansion at Red Mountain Resort as the hook that caught the writers’ attention. “We were the only ski resort that had anything new to announce. So it was really a lot easier for us to sell our great story.”
Rio de Janeiro, Marseille, Nicaragua, Ghana, Bhutan, Amsterdam and Houston were rated ahead of Rossland in the New York Times list that also includes such exotic locales as Istanbul, New Delhi, Koh Phangan and Hawaii. New York Times reporter Christopher Solomon said Rossland was set to “step into the spotlight,” of ski destinations. “Long known for its steeps, treeskiing and out-of-the-way location (it’s a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Spokane) that leaves its lift mazes empty and led Skiing magazine last year to call it the See PROMOTIONS, Page 3
With the wounds from the second deadliest shooting in U.S. history still fresh, it didn’t take long for School District 20 to test its mettle on how it would handle a similar episode. Mere days after Adam Lanza, 20, fatally shot 20 children and six adult staff members on Dec. 14 at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut, Trail Middle School had to contend with potentially dangerous situation of its own. An angry student had made threats against the school, said SD20 board chair Darrell Ganzert, prompting school administration to quickly implement its Lock Down Policy. The policy, in place since the Columbine High School massacre in 1999, was effective in diffusing the situation he noted. “Those are the worst nightmares for anybody, and we do what we can. But (that situation) just points out that the drills they do in the schools three times per year pay off in awareness,” he said. Although Ganzert expected discussion of the Connecticut incident would arise See DRILLS, Page 3

Savings from existing budgets will provide a modest wage increase for faculty of Selkirk College as the union and its employers reached a tentative compensation template agreement on Friday. The two-year agreement between the PostSecondary Employers’ Association (PSEA) and the BCGEU was reached under the Cooperative Gains Mandate Advanced Education, meaning no new provincial money was available for negotiations. However, armed with “savings found within existing budgets,” the PSEA was able to structure an agreement on wages to cover the college’s BCGEU faculty members, most of which are vocational, and include members in Trail,
Castlegar and Nelson. “The B.C. government has been clear that there is no new money to fund wage increases and there is no desire to download these costs onto families or future generations,” said Innovation and Technology Minister John Yap in a statement. The Cooperative Gains Mandate provides public sector employers with the ability to negotiate modest wage increases funded from savings within existing budgets, while not adding costs to taxpayers and ratepayers, and not sacrificing services. Other signatories in the agreement include Camosun College, Northern Lights College, Northwest Community College and Okanagan College. All institutions have concluded tentative settlements.

Border changes a doubleedged sword for businesses By Timothy Schafer Times Staff

Fraternal Order of Eagles Trail Aerie No. 2838’s secretary John Klit presents a $1,500 donation to Lisa Pasin, director of development KBRH Health Foundation and Poplar Ridge residents Vi Harding and Grace Walden (front row left to right). This donation will be used to build a kitchenette area in Poplar Ridge so residents and their families will have access to food and beverage service as needed.
Drills reinforce response FROM PAGE 1 in coming board meetings with further tweaking of the policy, a review after the December incident in Trail and a subsequent debriefing showed the policy was effective. “It’s taken a number of years for students to understand why they practice it, and how to proceed,” he said. “The drills happen regularly enough that everybody is pretty much aware of what has to happen.” The policy involves a coded message being sent over the public address sys-
tem, indicating every teacher would have to immediately lock the doors to their classrooms. The students would then try to seek some safe place. Ganzert explained, typically at a desk or under the desk. The students would then stay silent in that position and not respond to any noises, answer the door or look if people were rapping on the window. Then an all clear signal would be given and people would be directed to leave the building.
A new regulatory change at the U.S border is a double-edged sword for the Greater Trail business community, says the region’s new chamber executive director. Norm Cafler said the federal government’s move to increase and harmonize low-value shipment thresholds with the United States is supposed to increase the competitiveness here, but it might not have that effect in reality. “You can’t fault Canadian businesses, especially in a border community, to wanting to go where they can get a better price on a product,” he said about the desire to head south for cheaper deals. “But at the same time, if we are trying to encourage shop local, buy Canadian, that’s the down side.” The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) increased and harmonized the value thresholds for expedited customs clearance to $2,500 (Canadian) and $2,500 (U.S.) respectively. This is an increase from the current levels of $1,600 for Canada and $2,000
“You can’t fault Canadian businesses, especially in a border community, to wanting to go where they can get a better price on a product.” Norm Cafler
for the United States. In addition, Canada has increased the low-value shipment threshold to CDN$2,500 for exemption from North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) Certificate of Origin requirements, aligning it with the current threshold of the U.S. Cafler believed the issue would become a hot button topic for small businesses in the area, similar to what cross-border shopping has done to the notion of shopping local. He said he would be taking the issue to the membership. “I would be very interested to hear what they have to say over the coming weeks,” he said. “But we don’t seem to
have a whole lot of say in changing that at all.” Cafler said the local business community has to question what they are doing. “How many businesses are doing that locally and will be doing that?” he asked. Vic Toews, minister of Public Safety, felt the change would reduce “the administrative burden” on small business and improve it’s competitiveness. It is expected the new levels will make it easier and faster for Canadian and American businesses to move goods across the border. Increasing and harmonizing thresholds could allow an additional 1.5 million shipments to be cleared on the day of arrival across Canada, instead of these goods being held up in customs clearance. Each day, more than $1.6 billion worth of goods cross the common border between Canada and the U.S., bringing the annual value of traded goods to more than $580 billion in total. According to CBSA figures, every year $16 billion in trade activity has been lost due to a variety of border delays.
Promotions planned to lure people out for early Canada AM broadcast
FROM PAGE 1 ‘most underrated’ resort, Red has embarked on a two-year project that will add nearly 1,000 acres on neighbouring Grey Mountain. This winter a 10-dollar ride in a snowcat will haul skiers from Red to Grey to enjoy a few runs that have been cut as well as glade skiing,” wrote Solomon in the Jan. 11 edition of the Times. “Next winter a new quad chair will access 22 new slopes around the conical peak. Suddenly Red’s trail map will stretch as wide as Jackson Hole’s inbounds terrain,” he added. Steven said the Times travel writer is expected to visit the area sometime in the next few months for another story.
And while New Yorkers are reading about Rossland’s charm, eastern Canada viewers will be waking up to its annual celebration on Jan. 25 when Canada AM broadcasts live from downtown at the start of the Rossland Winter Carnival. “That’s another one we’ve been working with Tourism BC on,” said Steven. “We’ve been pitching stories to them for about a month and we keep coming up with crazier and crazier ideas. I don’t think they believed us.” She said one plan is to have all the bobsleds for the annual race lined up downtown like a show and shine event. However, the one hurdle
facing the city is accommodating the eastern Canada viewers for the morning show. “It’s live for eastern Canadian time so it starts at 2:30 a.m., and goes until 6 a.m.” So Steven has been charged with the task of ensuring a strong turnout fills the streets of Rossland during the telecast. She has lined up 16 retailers to open their doors during those wee hours on Jan. 25. There will also be over $4,000 in gift certificates from those retailers to hand out in draws. “It’s going to be a massive shopping spree,” she said. Steven is also planning a promotion involving non-profit societies. If the groups can bring
out 25 or more people during the broadcast, a donation will be made to their society. Tourism Rossland will donate $250 for a group with 25 people and $500 for groups of over 50 people. Contact Tourism Rossland at 250-231-1247 for more information. “We’re trying to get everybody involved.” She explained there would be shifts involved for the groups so they wouldn’t have to stay for the entire broadcast. Their only task would be to mingle, visit the stores and keep the streets looking busy. Even though a renown ski magazine, a world-recognized newspaper and a nationally-tele-
vised morning show have come calling in just the last few weeks, there could be more international publicity on the horizon. Steven said last week a group of eight journalists from Germany visited the region and more are expected. “We always get inundated with media but it seems like this year has been even better.” She credited the domino effect of all the current publicity as well as the on-going effort to promote Rossland around the world. “I think it’s the fact that we’ve been plugging away at this for six years now and we’re all kinda really gelling all the different groups and working nicely together.”

NDP launches petition Icewine harvest begins in Okanagan to stop government ads BY JUDY STEEVES
Kelowna Capital News
JUDIE STEEVES/CAPITAL NEWS
With a plunge in temperatures overnight, workers like Surinder Gill gathered in the dark, early morning to begin snipping bunches of frozen grapes to make the coveted icewine at Mission Hill Family Estate.
The sun was not yet up when workers around the Central Okanagan struggled into layers of warm clothes to gather at local vineyards Saturday morning to pick grapes. It’a a far cry from the warm autumn grape harvest, when vineyard work is often done in shorts. Sunday’s workers had to work to keep exposed skin from freezing, as the grapes must be picked and crushed while temperatures are below -8 C. for the popular nectar called icewine. Mission Hill Family Estate winemaker John Simes said they began about 4 a.m. when temperatures had unexpectedly plunged to -12 C in the vineyard in West Kelowna, and -17 C at Kelowna’s
airport. It’s late in the season to be picking grapes for the premium-priced dessert wine, and Simes estimates they’ve already lost half the crop to drop, wildlife and weather. However, he’s philosophical about it. “Losses are part of what happens with this late a harvest,” he commented as he gazed out over the vineyard, covered in snow, and with uneven bunches of brownish-coloured fruit hanging behind nets. The winery is also picking frozen grapes in Oliver and at Naramata this week. When temperatures rise above -8 C, they’ll stop picking and resume in the evening or the next morning, as another plunge in temperatures is forecast.

THE CANADIAN PRESS VANCOUVER - The provincial NDP has launched an online petition to silence a series of B.C. government ads the opposition calls a “massive” waste of tax dollars. New Democrat Leader Adrian Dix says the TV ads are a desperate attempt by the Liberals to cling to power, and they should be footing the bill, not taxpayers. The NDP says the Liberals are spending at least $15 million from contingency funds on the ads, something Dix calls the largest advertising campaign in

Majority enjoying retirement: poll THE CANADIAN PRESS TORONTO - A majority of Canadians say their retirement lives are what they had hoped for, but nearly a third admit to being worried that they’ll eventually run out of money, says a new poll released Monday. The survey, done for CIBC, found that 69 per cent of those polled say the quality of their retirement is what they had planned. Those living in Quebec, Manitoba and Saskatchewan (74 per cent) were the most likely to agree that their post-work life was what they had expected, while those in British Columbia (60 per cent) were the least likely. Yet the survey also found that 28 per cent of those polled acknowledged that they were concerned with not having enough money to sustain their retirement lifestyle. Those most afraid were from British Columbia (45 per cent), while those least afraid lived in Atlantic Canada (21 per cent). More than half (54 per cent) also acknowledged that they would not be able to handle an

unexpected additional payment of $500 a month, given their current budget. Only 62 per cent of those surveyed said they had a financial plan in place to give them an idea of how long they can sustain their retirement lifestyle. Christina Kramer, executive vice-president of retail distribution and channel strategy at CIBC, said retirees are faced with more financial challenges now than those in the past. “There are some unique factors facing today’s retirees as they look to the years ahead, including low interest rates on savings and the need to make their retirement funds last longer than previous generations, which makes long range planning even more important,” she said in a statement. The CIBC poll was conducted online by Leger Marketing using a sample of 867 pre-retirees and retirees between Sept. 18 to Sept. 21, 2012.
THE CANADIAN PRESS OTTAWA - The head of Canada’s largest aboriginal organization, Shawn Atleo, is taking a “brief” sick leave in the midst of a political crisis. Atleo, the national chief of the Assembly of First Nations, says the meetings and frustrations over the past two weeks have caught up with him, and his doctor has ordered him to rest. “I regret to have to tell you that those long days have caught up with me. This weekend, my doctor ordered that I take some time now to rest and recover and I have agreed with my family that I do this now,” Atleo said in a statement. “I will see you all very soon and will return re-invigorated and strengthened to work with you to drive this change together with all of you.” Atleo has been the target of much criticism from other chiefs and First Nations people for agreeing to meet with Prime Minister Stephen Harper last week. After a week of intense meetings, Atleo had managed to pull together a consensus on what topics the meeting should address. But he was not able to persuade
Harper to have Gov.Gen. David Johnston attend - a key demand of a faction of chiefs, including fasting Attawapiskat Chief Theresa Spence. Several leading chiefs said the assembly should have refused the meeting, because it didn’t take place on their terms, and on their turf. Chiefs from Manitoba and Ontario, and some from Saskatchewan, boycotted the Harper meeting and instead protested in the streets outside the Prime Minister’s Office. After the meeting, criticism continued to pour in. “Why would you let him (the prime minister) hurt our people like this!? What were you thinking,” tweeted Isadore Day, an outspoken chief from Serpent River in northern Ontario. Atleo was re-elected last summer for his second three-year term. He won solid backing despite his opponents saying that
he was too cosy with Harper and the federal government. Atleo has named Regional Chief Roger Augustine, who represents chiefs from New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island, to chair and facilitate executive meetings in his absence. He said he has also asked senior staff to set up “working teams” to support the complicated preparations that are required to make good on the agreements reached last week with Harper. “We have leaders in place to ensure that detailed work gets done. And now we have the public commitment of this government and this prime minister that they will treat these issues as their priorities.” In the hours after the meeting with Harper, Atleo admitted to being exhausted and having “fleeting” moments of leaving the job, but said he was constantly inspired by the plight of his people.

The inconvenient truth about oil pollution
A
study of six northern Alberta lakes conducted by Environment Canada and other scientists was published last week, generating headlines around the world. “Oil sands toxins ‘accumulate in freshwater systems,’” the BBC announced. The headline in The New York Times declared: “Oil sands industry in Canada tied to higher carcinogen level.” The study was reported with similar alarm across Canada. It looked at levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) in lakebed sediment, and found levels measurably higher than natural sources since oil sands extraction began 50 years ago. Most news reports I saw made little or no effort to put this information into context, in terms of the actual risk to humans, fish and other organisms. Some quoted people
they knew would scream bloody murder, because as we in the media are taught, conflict and fear attract an audience. As expected, U.S. environmental groups and their Canadian branch offices ramped up the rhetoric to battle their favourite villain. At least one major Canadian newspaper, The Globe and Mail, did a responsible job. Its report on the study stated “PAH pollution level remains low – on par, at worst, with an urban lake – but is rising.” In fact, five of six lakes tested were far below average contamination of urban lakes. PAH fallout is a daily constant of urban life, from vehicles, industry, and particularly where coal is burned for electricity. To be clear, there are dozens of different forms of PAH. Some have been shown to increase cancer risk, and some have been linked to (but not
TOM
FLETCHER B.C. Views
proven to cause) infertility, immune disorders and fish mutations. So when you drive your kids to school, stand at the bus stop, or drink a glass of water from Coquitlam Lake or any urban reservoir, you are exposed to PAH pollution from human and natural sources. The risk from this is an ongoing focus of research, but this study confirms one thing: your exposure is likely greater in any urban area than it is downwind of the Alberta oil sands. I argued this point
with B.C.’s celebrity environmentalist Tzeporah Berman, who has shuttled back and forth from ForestEthics to Greenpeace in recent years. She took to her Facebook page to publicize a dramatic call to action from 350.org, one of the most strident climate change advocacy groups in the U.S., selectively using a quote and picture from The New York Times. Our debate turned to greenhouse gas emissions. I argued that this PAH study mirrors the true picture of carbon dioxide emissions, which is that nearly 70 per cent of CO2 from all petroleum comes when you burn the final product in engines and furnaces. In B.C., which doesn’t burn coal for electricity, fully 40 per cent of humancaused greenhouse gas emissions are from transportation. Other sources include home heating and
industry. Berman insisted I was wrong, and claimed 70 per cent of Canada’s greenhouse gases come from “heavy industry.” I asked for her source. No response. A 2010 report by a Royal Society of Canada expert panel calculated that 27 per cent of our country’s fossil fuel emissions come from transportation. Another 16 per cent is from fuels burned for electricity. Five per cent is from oil sands operations. Berman’s figure is conveniently untrue. Greenpeace and the rest of the environmental scare industry want you to believe that stopping Alberta’s oil sands and pipelines would save the planet. Also wrong. It would drive oil demand from the U.S., Venezuela’s oil sands and elsewhere, with little net effect on the climate or pollution. Tom Fletcher is legislative reporter and columnist for Black Press

Old No need to sensationalize bridge could ease Trail’s traffic woes Here’s a partial cure for Victoria St accidents: there has been enough activity on the Old Bridge since it was closed two years ago to prove it is capable of handling pedestrian and light traffic. When the sewer line broke and was repaired a few months ago, the bridge withstood it just fine. Open the bridge – put up a sign on each end that says, “Use at your own risk, light traffic only.” This will reduce traffic on Victoria St. An engineer and a lawyer should be able to approve this. John L Carter, Trail
In the Jan. 4 issue there was a article on West Kootenay property assessments (Greater Trail assessments drop slightly for 2013, Trail Times Jan. 4). West Trail’s assessments were reported to have, “dropped by 5.2 per cent, “Nelson’s dipped by 3.5 per cent,” “Slocan Valley’s were down by up to 20 per cent”, but Rossland’s assessments, “plummeted $7,000 to $243,000.” The percentage that this represents is 2.8 per cent. Hardly a plummet, which the
dictionary defines as a vertical drop! I bring this up as the debate to close one of Rossland’s school is coming to a head. This is a very emotional issue. I hope in covering this topic, The Times will avoid some of the unhelpful and potentially inflammatory terminology found in the Jan. 10 article “Facilities review meetings set to begin next week,” discussing the upcoming facilities review meeting in Rossland Jan. 15. I don’t think that “the knives will be
sharpened,” nor do I think that “trustees will have targets pinned to their backs for the evening.” This is not a vendetta. Your reporter, Timothy Schafer, does an admirable job but sometimes strays with sensational wordplay. I know it’s tempting to spice up the reporting of local issues, but most of us read for facts, not gossip. Raymond Masleck’s op-ed on the school issue was much more helpful. Larry Doell Rossland

In return is not good for either side. I also read nothing about the repercussions of the bus driver who crept the bus ahead to attempt to push the Nitehawk players out of the way. Was the bus driver told by someone on the bus to do this? Did Terry Jones ask the players to come down? We don’t know this for sure, did you ask him? In regards to Mr. Santori’s response, I find it no surprise that a former politician would respond without looking into the whole story, however this was your second chance to get both sides of the story before printing. Fail again!
I actually think what the Nitehawks did, shows why they are a championship team, a dedicated coach standing up for the rights of his player, and a team standing up for their teammate. Maybe the Smoke Eaters should take a lesson and they will one day put a winning team on the ice and bring some fans back to the Cominco arena. I do not expect that you guys will publish this article in the paper as it shows numerous reporting errors that were made, but I do expect that you will look further into the details and possibly respond. Billions riding on status ruling
An editorial from the Halifax Chronicle-Herald With potentially billions in taxpayers’ money at stake, Ottawa is almost certain to appeal last week’s Federal Court of Canada ruling declaring that non-status Indians and Metis are “Indians” as set out in the 1867 Constitution Act, thus coming under federal jurisdiction. The court’s 175-page decision, which often reads like a history of British and Canadian relations with aboriginal groups from before Confederation to the present, refused to go further than that. Questions about rights and negotiations, Judge Michael Phelan suggested, were for the parties themselves to settle. Still, the ruling has opened a Pandora’s box. Lawyers for the plaintiffs said the decision
will trigger an “onslaught” of litigation aimed, first, at securing the rights and benefits accorded to status Indians for Metis and non-status Indians; and, second, at obtaining “remedy” for years of discrimination when they were denied equal standing with status Indians. Experts say income tax exemptions, education subsidies and other benefits possibly sought by these groups could cost Ottawa billions. News reports estimated there are 400,000 non-status Indians and 200,000 Metis today in Canada. But some Metis officials predicted an explosion in applications for official Metis status. In the 2006 census, 400,000 people self-identified as Metis. Judge Phelan ruled the evidence showed - overwhelmingly for non-status Indians,
less but still convincingly so for Metis - that Ottawa often acted as if both groups were under its jursdiction until the 1980s. Since then, the federal and various provincial governments have dodged questions about jurisdiction, the court said, leading representatives for non-status Indians and the Metis to launch legal action in 1999. Governments fighting among themselves about matters of jurisdiction clearly aren’t in the public interest. Considering the potential amount of money involved, it’s understandable why Ottawa may want a clear ruling from the highest court in the land on its jurisdiction. If the Federal Court ruling stands, or is ultimately upheld, however, many years of difficult negotiations lie ahead for all involved.

Hockey report lacks research I find it interesting that you printed a story in the recent paper about what had happened between the Smoke Eaters and Nitehawks (Hockey dispute spills over to parking lot, Trail Times Jan. 8). I would have thought that you would have done some research on the recent events that had happened, like the fact that a player wants to be released from the Smoke Eaters due to internal issues. It is a shame when politics get involved in hockey and young kids that want to play a game they love get mistreated and are then stuck in a place they don’t want to be.

JODIE FOSTER
Kate Gay community hails speech due in
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW YORK - Was it a proud revelation, or an impassioned case for privacy? A coming-out speech, or a why-SHOULD-Icome-out speech? Too little and too late, or just enough? Jodie Foster’s rambling, fascinating and intensely personal remarks at the Golden Globes were not merely the watercooler moment of the ceremony. They were a big moment for the gay community, and many advocates - though not all - were cheering her on Monday for finally referring publicly to her sexual orientation, albeit in her own particular way. While some were criticizing the actress for not uttering the words “gay” or “lesbian,” and for waiting decades to come out at all, others were saying she deserved to come out in any way she chose, and with any words she happened to favour. “No doubt, she was partly speaking in code, and she may never have wrapped her words around the fact that she is a lesbian,” said Fred Sainz of the Human Rights Campaign, a national gay rights group. “But everyone watching clearly understood that she was communicating to people that she is gay. She is to be congratulat-
ed, no matter how awkward or inarticulate it may have seemed to some. It took an awful lot of courage.” The moment that Foster, a 50-year-old Oscar winner for “The Silence of the Lambs” and “The Accused,” took the stage to accept the Cecil B. DeMille Lifetime Achievement Award, it was clear she wasn’t going to give a run-of-the-mill speech. The huge roomful of stars fell rapt with attention. “I guess I have a sudden urge to say something that I’ve never really been able to air in public,” said the actress and director, long known for being fiercely private. She suggested she had something to say that would make her publicist nervous. “But, you know, I’m just going to put it out there, right? Loud and proud, right? So I’m going to need your support on this,” she said. Then, after a pause: “I am single.” After some laughter, she added: “Seriously, I hope that you’re not disappointed that there won’t be a big comingout speech tonight because I already did my coming-out about a thousand years ago back in the Stone Age.” (A few of her words early in the speech were dropped by the censor; NBC
said it was because Foster had uttered the word “Jesus.”) After joking that celebrities are now expected to reveal they’re gay “with a press conference, a fragrance and a primetime reality show,” the actress quipped: “I am not Honey Boo Boo Child. No. I’m sorry. That’s just not me.” And then, more defiantly: “If you had been a public figure from the time that you were a toddler, if you’d had to fight for a life that felt real and honest and normal against all odds, then maybe you, too, might value privacy above all else.” Sainz, who is vice-president of communications at the HRC, said he understood the claim to privacy. “She wants to be judged on her merits as a director and actress and not necessarily by her private life,” he said. “This shouldn’t be the headline of her illustrious career - it’s a footnote.” Wilson Cruz a spokesman at GLAAD, the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, said that Foster has an opportunity she should not squander. “She can talk to young people,” he said. “She has the opportunity - not to overstate it, but she has the opportunity to save lives.”

ASSOCIATED PRESS LONDON The former Kate Middleton is due to give birth to her first baby in July, and her health is improving after a bout of severe morning sickness, palace officials said Monday. The child of Kate and Prince William will be third in line to the British throne. The 31-yearold Duchess of Cambridge, as she is formally known, spent several days in the hospital last month being treated for acute morning sickness. She has since resumed public appearances, and looked healthy at the unveiling of an official portrait last week.

Midget teams collide BY JIM BAILEY
Times Sports Editor
The Greater Trail Midget AA Smoke Eaters skated to victory at its annual tournament at the Cominco Arena Sunday. It was the third year in a row the Midget-AA Smoke Eaters faced Merritt AA Centennials in the final, and after beating the midget Centennials 3-0 in last year’s championship match, the Greater Trail Midgets repeated with a 3-2 win. Veteran captain James Booth scored twice in the final and Chris Colquhoun netted what proved to be the winner, as the doubleA Smoke Eaters held period leads of 2-0 and 3-1 before the Cents made it close. “Our older guys played really well,” said Trail head coach Paul Matteucci. “They’re so spirited, so it kind of carries over . . . I think we impressed a lot of people this weekend, just because no one’s seen us play and there were some big crowds, it was fun.” The AA Smokies play in the Okanagan Mainline Amateur Hockey Association and play the majority of their regular season games on the road. The team seemed a little flat in its opening match against Missoula Friday, but

Assistant captain Brody Tedesco and the Greater Trail AA Midgets steamrolled the competition this weekend, as the home team went undefeated in winning the Greater Trail minor hockey annual midget AA tournament Sunday with a 3-2 victory over Merritt. got better as the weekend wore on. “We played a lot better in our other four games than we did in that game,” said Matteucci. Indeed, after tying Missoula 3-3 in its opening match, Greater Trail reeled off 5-2 wins over Spokane and Kelowna to finish the round robin, before downing Spokane 7-2 in the semifinal to advance to the championship game against Merritt. Merritt faced Kelowna in the other semifinal, in a very close matchup that was decided by a shootout in a 2-1 victory for Merritt.
Trail was plagued by injuries, but a disciplined and concerted effort coupled with solid defensive play and good goaltending from Drake Poirier and Cole Gallo carried the team over their annual rivals. “We have been at times undisciplined, and this weekend the focus was to stay out of the box,” said Matteucci. “This time, especially in the final game, we stayed out of the box, and the kids were committed to turning a blind eye.” With some spirited fan participation, the games did not lack excitement on the
ice or in the stands, as large contingents showed their colours in each and every game. Matteucci also gave welldeserved praise to the refereeing crews who worked the games on the weekend, and the organizers and volunteers for all their hard work. The Greater Trail AA Midgets finish their OMAHA season in Penticton this weekend. The team will play in a tournament in Lethbridge later this month to prepare for the Provincial championships in Kelowna in March.
BY TIMES STAFF Nelson and Grand Forks rinks - mixed with some Trail flavour - advanced to the senior men’s and women’s provincial curling championship in Trail next month after sweeping their respective A-events at the Zone 1-2 playdowns in Cranbrook on the weekend. In the women’s event just two teams faced off to see which team would advance to the provincials. Grand Forks’ Teresa Hiram rink with Trail’s Rose Beauchamp throwing third, second Rhonda Lee Bedard of Trail, and lead Cindy Pettapiece won convincingly over Nelson’s Deb de Tremaudan foursome, with 10-1 and 12-4 victories to ensure its spot in the B.C.’s. On the men’s side, skip Tom Shypitka’s rink with third Fred Thomson, second Don Freschi of Trail, and lead Bill King curled to victory in the A qualifier, while Castlegar’s Myron Nichol rink earned a berth by winning the B side.
Shypitka opened the event with an 11-2 six-end drubbing of Nichol, and followed that up with a close 6-5 second draw win over Sparwood’s Ken McHargue rink. With a berth to the B.C.’s on the line, Shypitka took on Ralph Will’s foursome from Creston and tied 8-8 heading into the ninth end, Shypitka scored two to seal a 10-8 victory. After a tough start, the Nichol rink got back on track with wins over Salviulo of Nelson 7-6, an 8-1 victory over Trail’s Rob Ferguson rink, and an 8-6 win over McHargue. In the B qualifier, Nichol faced the Will rink who lost the A-final to Shypitka, with the final berth to the B.C.’s hanging in the balance. Will held a 3-2 lead heading into the fifth but Nichol scored two with the hammer, then added three enders in the seventh and ninth ends to cruise to a 10-5 victory. The Trail Curling Club hosts the B.C. Seniors curling championship Feb. 11-17.

Smokies setback sets up crucial series with Salmon Arm
BY JIM BAILEY
Times Sports Editor
After winning two big games against Vernon and Salmon Arm on Wednesday and Friday, the team’s offence ran into a wall against West Kelowna on Saturday at the Cominco Arena. The Smokies put in a complete effort en route to a 4-1 win over the Silverbacks, but unable to solve West Kelowna goalie Steven Myland fell to the Warriors 6-1. Trail outshot West Kelowna 31-27, but big saves from Myland and early goals by Max French put the Smokies in a 2-0 hole which they couldn’t climb out of. “Being down 2-0 five minutes into a game is never a great way to start,” said Smoke Eater assistant coach Brent Heaven. “When that happens it’s deflating for the guys and one of our downfalls of late is the slow starts.” After David Pope scored at 3:10 of the second to make it 3-0, Smokie starter Lyndon Stanwood was pulled in favour of
Adam Todd who had a great game against Salmon Arm the previous night. Marcus Basara made it 4-0 heading into the final frame, and after Ben Tegtmeyer made it 5-0, Trail’s Mitch Foyle would finally beat Myland at 8:45 of the third. Devon Hascarl rounded out the scoring with 41 seconds remaining. Trail beat West Kelowna 4-3 in overtime in its last meeting on Dec. 14 and still have one game remaining with the Warriors. “A lot of times I think it’s we beat ourselves not the other team beating us and that’s exactly what happened on Saturday,” said Heaven. “We could have been in that game but we made some costly mistakes and obviously a good team like West Side with the scoring power they have capitalized.” It was a disappointing result considering the way the Smokies dominated the Silverbacks on Friday. Trail fired 53 shots at the Arm’s towering six-foot-five puck
stopper Adam Clark including 23 in the second period when they finally solved the University of New Hampshire commit and took a 3-0 lead. Fruitvale native Foyle found his touch around the net as the 16 year old doubled his output on the year, scoring a goal and three assists over the three games. “He had a great week for us,” said Heaven. “He’s working hard, playing the game the way we’ve been talking to him all year. I think the pace for him is starting to slow. Mentally, it was tough early, it’s a lot quicker than playing Major Midget.” Adam Todd, was also brilliant in the Trail net, blocking 32 shots and taking first-star honours in the victory against the Silverbacks. “I thought Todd played a great game for us and gave us an opportinity to win,” said Heaven. “He played a solid 60 minutes and that’s what we needed.” Todd had the shutout going until an Evan Anderson 2-on-1 goal with less than
two minutes left spoiled what would have been his first goose egg in the orange and black. “I thought the team played really well in front of me,” said Todd. “It’s fun when you’re in those battles. It’s a little frustrating (to lose the shutout), but I’m glad we got the win. I mean at the end of the day that’s all that really matters.” Brent Baltus still remains day-to-day, but the Smokies are healthy on the back end for the first time this season. “I don’t think everybody for the rest of the year is going to be 100 per cent. It’s that grind time during the season, it’s like playoffs for us and if you don’t have ice bags all over your body, you’re not working hard enough.” In its final 15 games, Trail plays nine inter-divisional matches including two must-win matches versus Salmon Arm in a home-and-home this weekend, and ending the season with a four-game series with Penticton.

Canucks’ heir apparent ready to start THE CANADIAN PRESS VANCOUVER - Cory Schneider has waited much longer than a 113-day lockout for this chance. For the first time in his pro career, the goaltender entered a Vancouver Canucks training camp as the go-to guy in goal, a role he has coveted since he entered the organization. “It’s the culmination of my develop-
ment,” the 26-yearold Schneider said Sunday. “This is where I need to be at my best. All this training - it’s about eight years now since I’ve been drafted - it’s all coming to fruition. “Hopefully, it will all turn out the way I hope it will, and everything I’ve done to prepare for this moment will be worth it.” Schneider displaced Roberto Luongo as
Vancouver’s starter in training camp and is slotted for permanent No. 1 duty. Luongo waived his no-trade clause, and is attending camp amidst an uncertain future. He is expected to be traded, with the Toronto Maple Leafs rumoured to be the most likely suitors. Vancouver coach Alain Vigneault has refused to anoint a starter, but it’s clear

Loewen signs minor league contract THE CANADIAN PRESS The Toronto Blue Jays have signed Canadian outfielder Adam Loewen to a minor league contract with an invitation to major league spring training. The native of Surrey, B.C., spent most of last season with the New York Mets organization,
posting a .227 average with eight home runs and 26 RBIs with triple-A Buffalo. Loewen spent the 2009-11 seasons in the Blue Jays organization after converting to a position player from a pitcher. In 2011 with triple-A Las Vegas, the left-handed hitter batted .306.

the job is Schneider’s. Last summer, just before he was due to become a restricted free agent, Schneider signed a three-year, US$12-million contract extension. “I’m not going to change who I am or what I do because of it,” Schneider said. “The mentality changes a little bit, but I’m just excited to play as many games as I can. Nobody likes sitting out, nobody likes sitting on the bench, but that’s been my job, and that’s what I’ve been asked to do that last few years - and I’ve done it. It’s time to make that next step.”

Vanderbeek forced to retire
THE CANADIAN PRESS CHICOPEE, Ont. Canada’s Kelly VanderBeek announced her retirement Saturday, ending a 12-year career in downhill and super-G skiing. The 29-year-old from Kitchener, Ont., retires as the most decorated female member of the Canadian Alpine Ski Team and the first Canadian woman to climb onto the podium at the Lake Louise World Cup. VanderBeek, who resides in Canmore, Alta., with her husband and five-time Olympic
kayaker David Ford, returned Saturday to where he career started - Chicopee ski hill, near Kitchener - to announce her retirement. “This is where the Olympic dream started for me, so it seems only fitting that I’m here to make this announcement,” said VanderBeek. “As a ski racer I was prepared for injury but the extent of the knee injury I suffered in 2009 was bigger than I expected. I’ve always believed I would get back and I’m proud to say I got back. “Unfortunately, I’ve

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS PASADENA, Calif. - The teenage actor Angus T. Jones is expected back at “Two and a Half Men” next week, with CBS accepting his apology for calling the popular comedy “filth” and “very inappropriate.” “We move on,” CBS Entertainment President Nina Tassler said on Saturday. After a break for the holidays, actors on “Two and a Half Men” are about to begin rehearsals for new episodes. Jones, 19, plays the “half” in the popular comedy, portraying actor Jon Cryer’s son. Jones, who reportedly makes $350,000 an episode, later said he was sorry if his remarks in an interview with a religious organization showed an indifference to his colleagues or a lack of appreciation for his opportunity.

Golden Globes
‘Argo’ rakes in awards THE ASSOCIATED PRESS BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. - Ben Affleck got some vindication at the Golden Globe Awards. Affleck’s “Argo” earned him best motion picture drama and director honours at Sunday night’s ceremony. The awards came just a few days after Affleck was surprisingly omitted from the best-director category at the Academy Award nominations. Affleck also stars in the real-life drama as the CIA operative who orchestrated a daring rescue of six American embassy employees during the 1979 Iranian hostage crisis. These wins seem to shake up the Oscar race, in which Steven Spielberg’s stately, historical epic “Lincoln” was looking like a juggernaut. Despite seven Golden Globe nominations, “Lincoln” earned just one award: best actor for Daniel Day-Lewis’ intense, richly detailed portrayal of Abraham Lincoln as he fought for passage of the 13th Amendment, abolishing slavery. Spielberg’s film heads into the Feb. 24 Academy Awards with a leading 12 nominations. The other big winner of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s honours was “Les Miserables.” Based on the international musical sensation and Victor Hugo’s novel of strife and redemption in 19th century France, it won best picture musical or comedy, best actor for Hugh Jackman and best supporting actress for Anne Hathaway. Among the other multiple winners of the night, “Django Unchained,” Quentin Tarantino’s spaghetti Western-blaxploitation mashup, earned two awards: for supporting actor Christoph Waltz as a charismatic bounty hunter and for Tarantino’s script. On the television side, “Game Change” and “Homeland” were the big winners with three awards apiece. “Game Change,” the made-forHBO movie about 2008 vice-presidential nominee Sarah Palin, won for best motion picture or miniseries made for television, best actress for Julianne Moore and best supporting actor for Ed Harris’ portrayal of John McCain. “Homeland” was named best TV drama series, and its stars Claire Danes and Damian Lewis received the dramatic acting awards.

Continuous accusations can undermine trust Mailbox
Marcy Sugar & Kathy Mitchell
Dear Not: Your husband sounds overly suspicious. We don’t mean to add to the problem, but sometimes those who are having affairs accuse the spouse of the same offense. Tell your husband that his continuing accusations undermine your trust and make you wonder what is really going on. Counseling could help get to the bottom of it. If he is unwilling, you can choose to turn a deaf ear or get counseling on your own. However, if his accusations become more strident or more frequent, this could indicate mental health or medical issues, and he should see his doctor.
Say, “Dottie, remember when you said you used my first name on your dating profile? It really made me uncomfortable. And prospective dates don’t like that sort of thing, either. Please change it immediately.” If she is the type who would end a friendship over this, consider it a bullet dodged. Dear Annie: Hats off to you for printing the letter about World Suicide Prevention Day and bringing awareness to one of the most difficult events that happens in life. Only when you walk in these shoes do you understand what a person is going through when they become a survivor of a suicide. I lost my nephew to suicide in 2008. As difficult as it was, I sought the support of our local Survivors of Suicide support group. They understood exactly what our family was going through. Through their love,
support and compassion, I was able to hold myself together. It has now been four years, and my life has gone on, but not without difficult days and sadness. Without the support group, it would have been much
more difficult. I continue with the support group so that the incoming folks can see that life goes beyond their present grief. Please, if you find yourself in this situation, seek out S.O.S. through a national
hotline, your local family services or on the Internet, for they understand your pain, and they give you hope when such darkness shadows your life. -S.O.S. Survivor

Annie’s
Dear Annie: I recently made a new friend at work. We have known each other for three months, and we get along great. However, imagine my surprise last week when she told me she used my first name on an online dating site. At first I just thought it was a little weird, but now I feel really uncomfortable about it and don’t know what to do. How can I get her to change her online profile without ruining our work relationship? -- Miffed Dear Miffed: This was presumptuous but not disastrous. If she used only your first name and the rest of her information is her own, it’s annoying but not compromising. However, the fact that she would do this without consulting you indicates that she could easily take other liberties down the road, so you are smart to nip this in the bud. Be nice but honest.
2013 Conceptis Puzzles, Dist. by King Features Syndicate, Inc.
Dear Annie: I used to travel a fair amount for my job. These trips included lunches and dinners with my coworkers, sometimes in groups, sometimes not. At no time did I ever have the faintest interest in having an affair. But my husband thinks otherwise. During the entire time I traveled, he constantly accused me of sleeping with “somebody.” I never once gave him a reason to think I was cheating. I recognized that this was just his way of dealing with his own insecurities and poor self-image. I have not worked for a number of years, but on occasion, he stills insinuates that I had affairs. Instead of being supportive of my hard work then and now, he thinks it’s more important to keep suggesting that I’m always looking for someone else to sleep with. How do I get him to stop? -- Not a Cheater
