Neither candidate vying for the NDP nomination in the Chilliwack riding Saturday will be able to cast the traditional ballot for themselves — because neither lives in the riding. But Dennis Adamson and Patti MacAhonic both feel riding residency won’t be an issue among party members voting at the Jan. 19 nomination meeting in Chilliwack. “I don’t think it’s really an issue,” Adamson said, during a break in his door-knocking campaign Friday. Adamson is the Yale area director at the Fraser Valley Regional District. “I believe I’m a Chilliwackian,” MacAhonic said, because even though she lives outside the riding in the Chilliwack River Valley she has worked in Chilliwack as the executive director of the Chamber of Commerce and “all my mail has a Chilliwack address.” “I think I’m pretty well known,” she said. NDP electoral fortunes in the traditionally conservative Chilliwack riding seem brighter since MLA Gwen O’Mahony broke the BC Liberal hold on the ChilliwackHope riding in an April byelection called after MLA Barry Penner quit politics. And then the Chilliwack riding opened up to a possible NDP win when MLA John Les announced he would not run for re-election. According to one poll last month, if the election had been held Nov. 30 the NDP would get 48.5 per cent of the popular vote with the BC Liberals trailing at 33.1 per cent and the BC Conservatives with 10.5 per cent. Dorothy Kostrzewa: A legacy of service Jennifer Feinberg The Progress

The death of Dorothy Kostrzewa last Friday is being mourned by many in her beloved community of Chilliwack this week. Born August 17, 1928 as the youngest of eight children in the Chung family, Kostrzewa is being remembered for her generous warmth, enthusiasm, and fierce dedication to her community. Recognized as a trailblazer and a positive inspiration, she was the first Chinese-Canadian woman to take political office in Canada in 1971 when elected to Chilliwack city council. She was an accountant at the

Chilliwack General Hospital before entering politics. The Chung family survived the Fraser River Flood of 1948, and she came by her hard-working and tenacious nature honestly. Dorothy told a story of how she and her siblings used a raft of sorts, to dive down to retrieve fruits and vegetables from a submerged and flooded garden. Former Chilliwack Mayor Clint Hames worked with Kostrzewa on council for 18 solid years. “It was always a pleasure to work with Dorothy,” he said. “What was so interesting is that there was never a job too small for her to consider. She would attack every challenge with the same

amount of class and enthusiasm, even if it was a job that nobody else wanted.” She never said “no” to an opportunity to serve the community, and was a champion of several municipal landmarks she helped establish from the Chilliwack library, to the Chilliwack Museum, to the Cultural Centre and starting a committee to erect the Piper Richardson statue. “It always amazed me that she led such an active political life but gathered absolutely no enemies, which can’t be said for everyone else,” Hames added. “I think people acknowledged the fact that she was so sincere, and honest and willing to put the community first.”

She served as a Chilliwack councillor for an impressive 31 years, was awarded UBCM’s long service award for 25 years. Kostrzewa worked on councils led by seven mayors, from Bill Simpson to Clint Hames. Flags are at half mast this week at city hall. Accolades, plaques and awards were numerous. She earned the Order of Chilliwack, was named Woman of the Year, and awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws from UFV in 2009 for outstanding community service. ‘Long haul’ on the ‘high road’ for NDP hopeful Robert Freeman The Progress

NDP nomination hopeful Patti MacAhonic says she’s taking “the high road” and will resign as executive director of the Chilliwack Chamber of Commerce if elected this week as the NDP candidate in Chilliwack. Earlier, MacAhonic had vowed to challenge the

chamber board’s decision not to extend her unpaid leave of absence, if she won the NDP nomination. MacAhonic and Dennis Adamson, Yale area director at the Fraser Valley Regional District, will square off at a nomination meeting Jan. 19 in Chilliwack. MacAhonic told The Progress on Thursday that after meeting with chamber president Kevin Gemmell

and other board members, she decided not to ask them to reconsider their refusal to extend an unpaid leave of absence to the May 14, 2013 election, when she’ll find out if she’s won the job as MLA. “They really feel they’ll have a hard time getting (a replacement),” she said, “and if this keeps going on, it’s going to hurt the image of the chamber.”

And that’s not something MacAhonic wants to do after investing most of her life over the past two years to building up the organization. “It is highly unusual that people have to step down,” she said, to run for political office. “But I’m going to take the high road.” It’s not a road unfamiliar to MacAhonic, who also cleared up inaccurate media

reports about the death of her first husband in an industrial accident. In fact, she said, he took his own life in 1988 after struggling with a “very serious” brain injury caused by the accident. A 29-year-old widow with three children, MacAhonic threw herself into successfully changing legislation that left unprotected the children and survivors of

The Idle No More event Sunday in Chilliwack was all about protecting the environment for at least one marcher, Melissa Epp. “It’s everybody’s land to protect,” she said. She carried her infant daughter snuggled under a warm blanket, alongside about 400 people who braved the chill near Eagle Landing to join what they called a “flash mob” over the lunch hour. The demonstration was a way of putting the federal government and society on notice that “there is strength in numbers,” Epp said. People are upset enough about perceived threats to the natural environment to try and do something about it now. “We all need to stand together on this,” Epp said. “Harper is not listening. That’s why these rallies are so important. We’ll do anything we can to protect this land. “I came here today especially for my daughter. I want her to be able to experience the beauty of this province. I believe as British Columbians, we have the most to lose.” The crowd marched en masse from the Shell gas station on Squiala First Nation to a spot near the Home Depot along Evans Parkway in Chilliwack, singing, and drumming along the way. Some proudly wore elements of their traditional regalia, like cedar hats. Some pushed toddlers in strollers or elders in wheelchairs, while others carried drums, or placards. A peaceful gathering with speeches was held in a clearing and RCMP said there were no incidents or safety concerns to report. Squiala Chief David Jimmie said when he was asked to support this latest Idle No More event, there was “no question” it was the right thing to do. “I’m an elected leader,” said the chief, “but this is a grass roots movement. “We all have our problems on our reserves and differences

Four elderly residents were treated for smoke inhalation after a kitchen fire in an apartment building on Edward Street Thursday. A cigarette discarded in a plastic bucket is believed to be the cause. But it’s not clear if inhaling the smoke from the burning plastic directly led to the injuries suffered by the four seniors. “They were probably in the suites in the same hallway as the kitchen fire,” Assistant Fire Chief Ian Josephson said. As a “precaution” BC Ambulance paramedics sent the four to Chilliwack General Hospital for observation, he said. There were no other injuries reported among the residents who evacuated the three-story building after the alarm system was activated at 12:12 p.m. Thick, black smoke on the ground floor was seen by firefighters upon arrival. Fire crews extinguished a fire in the kitchen area of one of the suites, and the smoke was ventilated. “There is extensive fire damage to the kitchen area with considerable smoke damage to the remainder of the one suite and hallway,” Josephson said. Earlier on Thursday, a kitchen fire was reported in a single-wide manufactured home in the 6000block Vedder Road. The owner was not home at the time of the 7:59 a.m. fire, and no injuries were reported. Fire damages were limited to the kitchen area, with extensive some damage to the rest of the trailer.

Boycott sparks farmed fish debate in Chilliwack

A national campaign to boycott open-net fish farm products all comes down to consumer choice, said a local organizer. “This is a people’s movement. People are consumers. With expanded awareness people can make healthy, ethical choices, one of which would be to boycott feedlot salmon,” said Skwah elder Eddie Gardner. He organized a protest at the Real Canadian Superstore parking lot in Chilliwack, as a local launch of the boycott last Wednesday. “Salmon are sacred to us Stó:lõ,” said Robert Jimmie. “First Nations people need to be consulted on any further decisions that are taken respecting any expansion or renewals of fish farm licenses.” Some wild salmon advocates are convinced there’s a link between industrial fish farming in the ocean and the decline in Fraser River salmon stocks. “The devastating track record of open net feedlots on the West Coast and East Coast over 20

We are open and transparent about how we produce healthy, safe farmed salmon, grown in B.C. by B.C. farmers.”

He says their industry is more transparent than most other types of farming. “For example, specific information about the health of our fish has been available to the public since 2003. And today, DFO publishes detailed monthly information about our farms for anyone to see. Our farming practices are based on the best available science, and our evolution over the past 30 years shows just how far we’ve come.

There is a saying, that if you want something done, give it to a busy person. That was certainly the case for Dorothy Kostrzewa. The former city councillor and longtime Chilliwack champion passed away Friday, sparking a flood of tributes that continued throughout the weekend. Flags at city council, where she spent 31 years representing the interests of the community, were lowered to half staff in her honour. Kostrzewa retired from politics in 2008, leaving behind a legacy of hard work, dedication and an unstinting commitment to make things better. There was hardly a department, committee or subcommittee, that didn’t feel the charge of her energy. As former mayor Clint Hames remembered, “there was never a job too small for her to consider. She would attack every challenge with the same amount of class and enthusiasm, even if it was a job that nobody else wanted.” (See story, front page.) Indeed, even after she retired from public life, she remained active in the community, particularly in the arts community which she loved. Her accomplishments are many. Recipient of the Order of Chilliwack, Millennium Woman of the Year, Sportsman of the Year, Paul Harris recipient. The list goes on. But all these accolades were the result of her efforts – not the motivation behind them. Her energy was only surpassed by her humility. And perhaps that is her true legacy to Chilliwack. In a world where politics and public life draw their share of criticism, Kostrzewa remains to many an example of selfless service. It is a model we can only hope for in our elected officials. More than protests needed to fix the system

Blockades, starvation diets, protests and threats really don’t solve anything. They get people’s attention and make for some good media play, but do they get solutions? The tactics have defined the grassroots movement Idle No More and Attawapiskat Chief Theresa Spence liquid-only diet until she has a joint meeting with PM Harper and Governor General David Johnston. Quite frankly, there are faults on both sides when it comes to the friction between the federal government and First Nations people. The feds have long dragged their heels on dealing with First Nations’ issues while aboriginal people are frustrated with seeing their treaty rights ignored or set aside. But deeper than that, there are the accumulated effects from being marginalized, disrespected or forgotten. In 2005, Paul Martin’s Liberal

government signed the Kelowna Accord to provide $5.5 billion in spending over five years on education, housing, health care, economic development and skills training for natives. The following year the Harper government dumped it. The recent report released by the Missing W o m e n Commission Margaret brought attention to the culture of EVANS indifference by officials toward the disappearance or murders of many aboriginal women. Meanwhile non-native Canadians are just as frustrated and confused. Billions of dollars are poured into band council coffers every year. Where does all that money go? The annual budget for Aboriginal

Affairs and Northern Development Canada (AANDC) is about $7.8 billion for the 2012-2013 year and some 83 per cent goes directly to transfer payments to bands. Actual expenditure for community infrastructure has averaged $1.1 billion annually since 2004 to 2012 and according to the AANDC website actual expenditures for education and social development have both increased annually since 2004. Some of these numbers are about to change with the Department facing $165 million in spending cuts over the coming three years. So why is it, when billions of dollars are provided to bands across the country, housing on so many reserves remains worse than third world country accommodation? To Canada’s embarrassment, Attawapiskat is the poster village. Last week an audit done on the Attawapiskat financials by Deloitte and Touche stated that

81 per cent of a total of over 1,000 money transactions did not have the proper paperwork and 61 per cent had none at all. This audit targeted $104 million transferred to the 1,828-population community in northern Ontario between 2005 and 2011. Despite the fact that there are a number of bands that are economically wealthy, many exist on reserves in remote regions of Canada where work and economic opportunities are slim to none. Poverty, addictions, despair, and suicide become hallmarks of a community of people isolated and displaced from mainstream Canada. Why can’t they move location, taking all their treaty rights with them? There are over 1.17 million aboriginals with over 868,000 registered Indians in Canada, representing nearly four per cent of the population and 615 bands across the country. The number includes

Meti and non-status Indians. Last week the Federal Court ruled that the 200,000 Meti and 400,000 nonstatus Indians are also “Indians” under the Constitution Act indicating they deserve of full treaty rights. Just how Ottawa will react to that remains to be seen. It was the controversial omnibus budget bills – C-38 and C-45 – that fueled the Idle No More grassroots movement. Changes to environmental assessments, the Indian Act, and Navigable Waters Protection Act were all viewed as threats and infringements on a cultural way of life and on traditional hunting and fishing rights. The mindsets need to change between the feds, First Nations, and frustrated Canadians. Funding to bands needs to be managed transparently, social issues have to be solved, and treaty rights respected. Until then, nothing moves forward.

Drivers need to slow down through Yarrow fast enough there really is nothing there. This seems to be the idea that most truck drivers and many other drivers have stuck in their heads: that Yarrow is no more than a street – just a route to wherever they may be going. They don’t seem to think about the fact that there are people here. Many of them are families with young kids, and let’s not forget the animals. There are at least as many if not more dogs, cats and horses here as there are people and they happen to be just as dear to the families as the kids are. Losing one of them hurts and we don’t want another family to go through the unnecessary pain that we did. Living on the main street has

always been a bit scary but never was it worse to us than when my little brother and mother were forced to watch the horrible tragedy that happened right in front of our house. This event will never leave our hearts or minds, and the fact that the truck drivers just keep speeding by doesn’t help. I’m not sure what it’ll take for them to stop – maybe speed bumps or higher police patrol. But I don’t want our community to end up with a child or teen killed or maimed by a speeding truck. Is risking lives really worth getting to your destination faster?

A small town we may be; drive through it fast enough and you won’t even notice we’re here. But if I know anything about small towns (which I do because I was raised in one), it’s that the smaller the town the bigger the heart. Here in Yarrow, our heart’s a pretty good size. This was demonstrated personally a few months ago when my family’s sweet little white Jack Russell was drastically swept away from us by the speeding tires of a dump truck. We had two strangers, including one lady on her way to work stop by and help my mom pick up Pixie’s remains and another a few hours later drop off a candle that said “Thinking of You.” As I said before, if you drive

Feeling the sting of ‘systemic racism’ It has been five years since my family and I immigrated to Canada. The first year was difficult and hard to adjust. The second was not any better. Our building blocks of wealth decreased drastically as if a pile of sand was washed away. Without much of a choice, my whole family started wrapping and delivering over a thousand flyers and newspapers every week, even in severe weather conditions such as blizzards and hailstorms. In addition, my father began to work as an employee in a supermarket, paid by hourly wages. By then, I had never in my life imagined my highlyeducated father to be a part-timer labouring, in a store. Why didn’t the

government recognize his post-secondary education? When we moved to British Columbia, life turned for the better, well, that was what we first thought. My father was promoted to become a full-time super visor, school was interesting, and we bought a new townhouse. However, numerous stressful problems emerged out of these positive situations. For instance, not long after my father was promoted, one of his co-workers under his department filed false complaints to the higher-ups. Due to the language barrier, my father tried his best to understand and explain, but the higher-ups categorized him as a “trou-

blemaker”. Furious and frustrated, I typed a five-paged explanation for my father in order to solve such a ridiculous problem. Clearly, systemic racism still lingers Canadian society. On the other hand, when we requested the builder of our townhouse to fix some little damages during the warranty period, he walked straight into the house with his shoes on, even though we asked him to take them off. Seeing my one-year old sister crawling on the floor, I was infuriated and just when I was about to release my anger, my mother shook her head. In that forty minutes, I swallowed down humiliation and fury with my fists clenched.

Now when I look back, stress has not dispersed and traces of melancholy seemed to have imprinted in my heart. Why is there prejudice in such a tranquil nation? I may only be 16 years of age and have yet to know what is right and wrong. Nevertheless, I am not only speaking for my family, but for thousands of families that had immigrated to Canada. This ugly racism must be thrown out and a social awareness needs to be raised by social-media and the government. As a community, co-operation is essential to work toward a brighter future.

‘Wrong house’ targeted in home invasion: RCMP Robert Freeman The Progress

A home invasion by two armed men in Chilliwack Saturday night was a homeowner’s nightmare. The two men who entered the Bayshore Avenue home in Webster Landing just after 11 p.m. had the wrong house. “Through the investigation, police have determined that the suspects involved

had the wrong residence,” RCMP Const. Tracy Wolbeck said. “I can’t imagine a more terrifying experience for these people,” she said. “Although nobody in the residence was physically injured, it’s going to take them a long time to recover mentally.” The two men demanded cash from the six occupants, and then fled the scene. One of the suspects was

wearing a baseball cap, and had a medium build with brown hair and stubble on his face. The second suspect was about six feet tall and was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and sweat pants. Elderly man stabbed while collecting cans

A 69-year-old Chilliwack man is recovering in hospital after being stabbed while collecting cans Thursday night. “This is a really senseless attack on an elderly man,” said RCMP Cst. Tracy Wolbeck. Police say the man was collecting cans in the area of College Street and Victoria Ave. at around midnight when he came upon a man in an abandoned building. After the victim asked the male what his business was there, the victim was knocked to the ground and stabbed.

The victim is currently in hospital recovering from non-life threatening injuries. The suspect is described as a male approximately 22 years old, with a slim build and dark hair “These kinds of crimes are a very big priority for us. We are hoping that someone can help lead us to the person responsible for this,” said Wolbeck. Tammy Wood and Jason Alexander’s house is surprisingly quiet considering that there are nine children at home ranging in age from three to 15. And yes, it’s normal, says Wood. The house didn’t used to be quite so full. In 2009, before the two had even met, Wood suddenly became a single mom after her husband was killed in a workplace accident. She was the mother of five children, with another on the way. For two years she raised her six kids by herself in Agassiz. She had some help from family, friends, counsellors, and even complete strangers, but while she was busy keeping her children happy without a father, Wood forgot about making herself happy. She started to get lonely. She approached a friend and told her that she wanted to go out for coffee with someone. She wanted to go on a date and have an adult conversation. Her friend had someone in mind and, through Facebook, they connected. Wood and Alexander hit it off instantly. Over the course of a year, they fell in love and last summer on a boat out in the middle of Harrison Lake, Alexander proposed to Wood. She said “yes”. Then one morning last month as Wood was watching the morning news on Global TV, she saw a contest they were offering to win a dream wedding in Mexico. “I thought for everything that I’ve been through over the years, if anyone deserves it, I do,” says Wood.

While several Lower Mainland communities will encounter reductions in their property assessments, Chilliwack and area’s stable housing market continues to fare well in staying the course. “Once again, we are witnessing pockets of over-inflated prices due to the pressures of supply and demand, and many home owners in the Lower Mainland are left in the position of watching their property values decline,” said Cynthia Admiraal, President of the Chilliwack and District Real Estate Board (CADREB). Chilliwack’s “flat” pricing in recent months has helped to ensure that prices are more affordable to the various segments of purchasers, from the first-time buyer to those who are able to attain their dream home. While the Christmas season saw a slow-down in sales – 106 sales completed in December compared to 120 in December of last year – inventory remains good, and CADREB predicts a steady upward trend in sales as the U.S. economy strengthens and the transition back to the PST takes place this spring which will likely heighten interest in new builds. Of the 106 sales last month, the highest number (14) occurred in the $300,000 - $349,999 range, matched by 14 sales in the $400,000 - $499,999 range. There were 8 sales of homes over the $500,000 mark. At the end of December, there were 1,664 active listings on the market.

ly about dementia, we can all help to increase awareness about the symptoms, encourage earlier diagnosis and provide support for families to have the confidence and skills for the journey ahead.” To help change the conversation, she says, area residents can do their part if they: • Learn the facts about dementia. Help to dispel inaccurate information to change society’s attitudes and opinions towards people with the disease.

• Stop making jokes about Alzheimer’s which trivialize the condition. “We don’t tolerate racial jokes, yet dementia-related jokes are common.” • Maintain relationships with people with dementia at home, in the community or at work, especially as the disease progresses.

Chilliwack’s Speed Watch program is looking for volunteers to help fill its ranks. The group, which works under the Chilliwack Community Policing Society, acts in partnership with the Chilliwack RCMP to monitor traffic speeds and remind motorists to drive safely. Members can often be seen on Chilliwack roadsides with radar guns and speed reader boards. The program is looking for volunteers to help staff its traffic checks. Applicants must be over the age of 19, have a valid driver’s license

and be able to pass a basic security clearance. Speed Watch is also looking for a program co-ordinator. This is a volunteer position, where good planning and supervisory skills are a definite asset. Applicants must have a valid driver’s license and be able to pass an RCMP security clearance. Instant impact for trade deadline pickup Eric J. Welsh, The Progress

Say this much about Philip Zielonka. The kid knows how to make a good first impression. Zielonka was the big trade deadline acquisition for the Chilliwack Chiefs, picked up Thursday in exchange for defenceman Ben Israel, forward Garret Forster and futures. He made his Chilliwack debut Friday night in a home game against Prince George. For 55 minutes, Zielonka and the Chiefs muddled along. Down 2-1 with five to play, it looked like Chilliwack was destined for its fourth loss in five postChristmas games. But in the final minute of the game, Zielonka picked up his first point in a Chiefs jersey when he put a weak shot on net from the right faceoff dot. Spencer Graboski chipped the puck over Prince George netminder Kirk Thompson to send the game to overtime and rescue at least a single point. Two minutes and 49 seconds into OT, with Chilliwack on a power play, defenceman Alex Perron-Fontaine floated a cross-ice pass to Zielonka. Thompson was slow getting across, and Zielonka hit the gaping net with a gamewinning snipe. Cheers all round. “There’s always a lot of open ice on a power play, and if I have time and space I can usually make the right play,” the Quebec native said afterwards. “Fonti gave me a great pass and there was just too much room for me to miss.” Zielonka came to the Chiefs from the Coquitlam Express, one of Chilliwack’s Mainland division rivals. The Express dealt their entire top line on Thursday, sending John Siemer to Penticton and Mitch Nardi to the West Kelowna Warriors. Coquitlam had lost five straight leading into the deadline, slipping into the basement

of the Mainland division at 16-20-1-0. Still, Zielonka wasn’t sure he was staying or going until he was called into the coach’s office. “We had no idea. We thought we were going to make a push for the playoffs,” he said. “I got to rink and they told me and it was mixed emotions.” Being traded is tough at first. You have to say goodbye to teammates you spent every day with. You say goodbye to billets who’ve opened their home to you. You leave an environment you’ve grown comfortable with and have to start over again with new billets and new teammates in a new town. “I’m really good friends with Siemer and Nardi off the ice, so it was a really sad thing taking a different direction from those guys,” Zielonka said. “It was like a roller coaster heading into the deadline, with days where I thought I was staying and days where I though the opposite. But it’s part of hockey and something we have to do.” A few hours later, Zielonka found himself in the Chiefs locker room, surrounded by former foes. The last time Chilliwack and Coquitlam met, Zielonka and Trevor Hills mixed it up in the final minutes of a 5-3 Chiefs win. Zielonka ended up in the penalty box with a double minor for spearing. “I saw Hillsy for the first time and we both kind of apologized for the cheap shots,” Zielonka laughed. “Honestly, I disliked a lot of the guys on this team. But when you get traded you’ve got to put all of that aside. Whatever happened in the past is done and now we move forward together.” One familar face is new linemate Luke Esposito. Both players will be heading to Harvard after this season. “He’s obviously a

great player and a leader off the ice and I was thrilled when he committed to Harvard too,” Zielonka said. “He was the first guy I texted when I got traded here, and we’re really excited to play together.” After squeaking past Prince George Friday, Zielonka and company hit the road for weekend games on Vancouver Island. Chilliwack lost 2-1 at Victoria on Saturday, with Austin Plevy scoring the lone Chief goal. The locals bounced back Sunday afternoon with a 2-1 win over a dreadful Cowichan Valley Capital squad, with Zielonka and Jaret Babych getting the goals. “Scoring goals is pretty much my main thing, but I don’t want to be viewed as an offenceonly guy,” Zielonka said, when asked what he’ll bring to the table. “I try to do everything, but offensively is where I’ll do the most damage.” Chilliwack comes

out of the weekend with a record of 24-121-1, which leaves them second in the Mainland division behind the Surrey Eagles (24-10-13). The Eagles picked up Adam Tambellini from the Vernon Vipers, and he made an instant impact. In weekend wins over Penticton (2-1) and Langley (10-2) Tambellini collected five goals and two assists, and he obviously makes Surrey a lot more dangerous. But Zielonka feels a healthy Chilliwack team, with Josh Hansen and Ryan Donohoe back in the lineup, will take a back seat to no one once the BCHL playoffs begin. “They were always one of the hardest teams to play against, with a lot of tough players,” he said. “They’re skilled too, and toughness and skill is a pretty deadly combo. There’s a lot of potential and if we gel together we can make a good push for it.”

Burns brings physical edge Lost in the shuffle Friday night, another player made a quiet Chilliwack Chiefs debut. The team signed 19-year-old forward Tanner Burns away from the junior B North Okanagan Knights. Burns was leading the KIJHL squad in scoring with 23 goals and 39 points in 34 games. But that’s not why Chiefs general manager Harvey Smyl signed him. Burns is a good sized forward at six-foot-three and 190 pounds, and he had 60 penalty minutes for the Knights. Smyl hopes that physical play

translates well to junior A. ”Tanner is a big bodied, physical forward who has skill and can play both centre and wing,” Smyl noted. Burns picked up his first BCHL PIMs just 2:24 into his Chiefs debut, taking a charging minor behind the Prince George net. He picked up his first point Sunday afternoon, assisting on Jaret Babych’s game-winning goal. Burns and the Chiefs are in Prince George for two this weekend. Their next home game is Jan. 23 versus those same Spruce Kings.

Chips may still fall in deadline deals Between Jan. 8-10 there were 15 transactions involving BCHL teams, with 22 players switching jerseys. Many more might move in the offseason as the future considerations come to light. The future are certain to be significant in the deal that sent Adam Tambellini to Surrey. 18-year-old Mason Blacklock is the only player officially going to Vernon, but there will be more. John Siemer went from Coquitlam to Penticton for futures. Mitch Nardi went from Coquitlam

to West Kelowna for futures and Aaron Hadley went from Vernon to Nanaimo for futures. It’s unlikely those players would be let go for cash. The BCHL and AJHL collaborated on player moves, with Nanaimo sending Kevin Miller and futures to the Fort MacMurray Oil Barons for Brock Maschmeyer. Following his discharge from the Canadian Army Signal Corps, Ray began his long career with BC Telephone Co. LEGER Earl Sylvain Joseph

Earl Leger went to be with the Lord on January 10, 2013 at Abbotsford Hospital LEGER at the age of 62 years. Earl was born in St. John, New Brunswick to parents Aurele and Lillian Leger. In 1955 the Canadian Army transferred the family to CFB Chilliwack. As a teenager Earl joined the Air Cadets, eventually earning his pilotâ€™s license. He loved to fly. He married Julie Anne (Skillen) at age 18. In his early 20â€™s, he logged with his father-in-law Joe Skillen. Between 1965 to 1977, Earl partnered with parents and brother to run the the Pay-N-Save Gas Station on Yale Rd. In 1977, Earl began his career with BC Corrections which lasted 35 years, ending as a probation officer. His last years were in BC Juvenile Corrections. Earl was an owner with his wife at â€œJulie Anneâ€™s Art & Custom Framingâ€?. He volunteered 25 years at Chilliwack Fire Department â€“ Hall #1 (later renamed as Hall #6) as well as the Boy Scouts, Kinsmen, and driving bus for Sunday School. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 44 years, Julie Anne; children: David and Kathy Leger and Roseanne and Richard Jones; grandchildren: Mitchel Leger, Tiffani Leger, Olivia Leger, Rian Wademan, Brandon Leger; brother, Ron Leger and his children: Sheryl and Brian; the large extended Skillen family of Don and Rose Ross, Annette and George Sand-

LOBB Minnie Pavey

nee: Bridge Minnie Pavey Lobb (nee Bridge) quietly passed away on Tuesday, January 8, LOBB 2013 just three days shy of her 103rd birthday. Born in Vancouver, to Fred and Alice Bridge, Minnie was one of 11 children, and one, Edith Rouse, still remains. After graduation from high school, Minnie moved to Chilliwack where she met Laurie Lobb to whom she was married in 1930. Laurie preceded her in death in 1998. To Laurie and Minnie three children were born; Douglas/ Christine; Ernest/Evelyn and Judith/Terry Plummer. Minnie had 13 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren and never distinguished between grandchildren or step-grandchildren or great-grandchildren; she loved them all. A trip to Lindell Beach was always a special occasion for all of the famil. Her quiet presence and love will be greatly missed. A service celebrating her life will be held on Thursday, January 17, 2013, 1:30 pm at the Alliance Church, 8700 Young Rd, Chilliwack BC. Her life, her quiet yet sure faith and her non-judgmental love will live on in all those who knew and loved her. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a contribution made to Food for the Hungry (fhcanada.org) or to a charitable organization of your choice.

Hazel Helen Millham passed away on January 2, 2013 at Chilliwack, BC at age 94 years. MILLHAM She was born March 18, 1918. Hazel is survived by her three sons; Dean, Craig and Brent; and one step-daughter, Sheila. Also many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Fredrick in 1963; her step-sons, Clifford, Sheldon; and her brothers, David, James and Robert; and her sisters: Agnes, Ethel and Elsie.
