All students in Grade 4 and 7 who are able to are expected to write tests of literacy and math skills this month, but changes will be considered for future years, B.C. Education Minister Don McRae says. Long opposed by the B.C. Teachers’ Federation, the Foundation Skills Assessment tests are being administered in public schools across B.C. The issue is sure to be debated in this spring’s provincial election, as the NDP campaigns to scrap univer-

sal testing and look for a new way to evaluate student performance. McRae said Wednesday there will be no change to the program this school year, with students only excused due to family emergency, illness or other circumstances beyond the control of the student. But he said he is open to discussing the program with the BCTF, school administrators and parents for years ahead. “Any time we have a form of assessment, I think it’s really important that after you give it, if you’re going to give it again, you continually look at it to see if it can be done better or more

NDP education critic Robin Austin said work is underway with education experts to refine the party’s position on skills testing. If the NDP forms a government in May’s election, the plan is to replace province-wide tests with a random sample of students, and develop a new program later. Austin said one of the problems with FSA testing is the annual controversy over the Fraser Institute school rankings based on test scores. The rankings are

intended to help parents track their local school performance over time, but media attention typically focuses on comparing schools in rich neighbourhoods and poor ones. The BCTF continues to urge parents to bend the rules and pull their children out of the testing program. A Chilliwack woman fighting breast cancer has been cut off unemployment insurance benefits before her medical treatment is over. But Bev MacGregor’s plight is not an isolated case, said ChilliwackHope MLA Gwen O’Mahony, who has gone to bat for the Chilliwack resident, even though EI coverage is a federal matter. “At present the maximum length of the EI sickness benefit is 15 weeks,” O’Mahony said in a Jan. 9 letter to MP Diane Finley, the federal minister of human resources and skills development. “But the average length of breast cancer treatment is 38 weeks and can last much longer,” she said, leaving many in financial straits after they’ve fought and survived the disease. O’Mahony urged the minister to take “immediate steps to improve EI coverage ... so more Canadians are not left scrambling to cover basic expenses while they undergo lifesaving treatment.” MacGregor said she was “absolutely ecstatic” to learn about O’Mahony’s letter of support. “This is shameful that in Canada this is how we treat our sick people,” she said, pointing out that EI coverage is not free, but something every Canadian worker pays into. MacGregor, a government employee until her job was cut, was told that her EI benefits would end Nov. 17, and that she had “forfeited” her eligibility for more because her treatment went beyond 15 weeks. “My cancer wasn’t magically cured by Nov. 17,” she said. “I have no benefits.” Continued: EI/ p4

Surge of flu cases, norovirus hits the province H3N2 usually a ‘more severe’ influenza strain Jeff Nagel Black Press

A spike in flu cases to abnormally high levels in late December has public health officials watchful in case the illness spreads even faster now that kids are back in school. The B.C. Centre for Disease Control said the province is seeing the highest levels of suspected influenza activity in a decade. The main flu virus circulating this year is H3N2, which is one of the three varieties covered by this year’s flu vaccine. The reopening of schools may mean even more potential for the virus to spread between students

and then to homes. “It is a potential concern that children can facilitate the spread, they can amplify the spread,” epidemiologist Dr. Danuta Skowronski said. Kids are more susceptible to flu because they have less lifetime exposure to the various viruses than adults, she said. They also have richer social networks and they’re confined together in schools, making transmission more likely. The H3N2 virus generally tends to be “more severe” than other types, Skowronski said, but added it’s too early to say if this year’s flu cases are tending to be worse than

normal. The virus has been in circulation in the human population since 1968 but constantly mutates to defeat the immunity of its hosts. There have also been several flu outbreaks at long-term care homes so far this season. Skowronski said it’s not too late to get the flu shot and strongly urged the elderly and those with chronic conditions or compromised immune systems to get it soon. She also recommends vulnerable groups get early treatment with antiviral medication within 48 hours of symptoms to reduce the risk of a dangerous flu bout. Skowronski said she’s not concerned about a reported shortage of Tamiflu antiviral medication,

adding B.C. has enough stockpiled for high-risk patients. The flu season typically runs from November through April and Skowronski said a late-winter wave of flu cases is possible this year from a different flu virus. Health officials are also grappling with a new strain of norovirus, which changes its form every few years, resulting in more cases than usual. “Many people don’t have immunity to this new strain,” said Fraser Health spokesperson Tasleem Juma. “This is a very unpleasant virus but it usually passes within 24 to 48 hours.” The “very contagious” gastrointestinal infection causes vomiting and diarrhea. Officials with Chilliwack Chances are applying for changes to their food primary liquor licence to “allow audience participation” in the main dining room of the community gaming centre. The request for a permanent change to the licence by Chilliwack Gaming Ltd. was received for information by council Tuesday. A public hearing is set for Jan. 22. “It’s for any special events that require audience participation; anything that people may do other than sitting in their seats,” said Howard Blank, vicepresident of Great Canadian Gaming. The letter of intent contained in the staff report of the council agenda, cites the wish of the licensee to offer some “daytime entertainment” on a removable stage in the main dining room of the Chances, known as The Well. It could be artists, pianists, or hypnotists, as examples. “Right now people can’t dance,” said Blank, about the conditions of the current liquor licence. “But part of our promise to the community is ‘something for everyone,’ but right now we can’t fulfill that on the entertainment side of things.” Asked if it was typical of other Chances to apply for a “patron participation entertainment endorsement,” soon after opening, Blank replied: “That was the way it worked with this project. “This is something we now need to get permission to correct. We’re not hitting on all cylinders yet.” The letter of intent cites a variety of entertainment that may be offered: “including live bands with dancing (dine and dance), amateur nights/ talent shows, karaoke/sing-a-longs, comedians,-magicians, illusionists,”: — all of which will be suitable for all audiences. Chilliwack RCMP are still trying to identify a body pulled from the Fraser River Monday morning. “The coroner’s office is investigating in order to positively identify the body, which could take some time,” RCMP Cpl. Tammy Hollingsworth said Wednesday. Until a positive ID is made, she said, there are few details the police could confirm. “We’re hoping the coroner will be able to provide more answers,” she said. Police said a fishing guide spotted the body floating near the mouth of the confluence of the Harrison and Fraser rivers at about 9 a.m. Monday. The Kent Search and Rescue team was called to help recover the body, which is currently awaiting autopsy. Aggressive hand-washing is one of the best ways to prevent the spread of either illness and norovirus-contaminated surfaces should be cleaned swiftly with hot, soapy water and then disinfected with a household disinfectant. Besides taking care to cover coughs and sneezes, officials recommend regular cleaning of frequently touched objects, such as doorknobs and remote controls.

NDP won’t oppose Kinder Morgan pipeline yet Robert Freeman The Progress

An oil pipeline is an oil pipeline is an oil pipeline. So, why aren’t the BC New Democrats opposing Kinder Morgan’s proposal to twin the Trans Mountain pipeline like they’re opposing the Enbridge pipeline in northern B.C.? NDP environment critic Rob Fleming told The Progress in an

interview before Christmas that’s because there are some important differences between the two proposals. One of them, of course, is the difference between BC Liberals and BC New Democrats. “What the BC NDP has told Kinder Morgan is they should not expect to get the same sweetheart deal that Enbridge got,” Fleming said. “That won’t happen if we form government.”

He said BC Premier Christy Clark “out-sourced B.C.’s decision-making powers to Ottawa,” but an NDP government would insist both proposals go through a “made-in-B.C.” environmental review. “(Clark) has put BC Liberal coalition politics ahead of the interests of our province,” he said. Kinder Morgan has also yet to file an application to the National Energy Board, Fleming pointed

out, while the Enbridge proposal is two-thirds of the way through the NEB process. “We’ll get to Kinder Morgan when and if it makes a formal application,” he said. The company doesn’t anticipate filing an NEB application until late 2013, with regulatory reviews to follow in 2014 and the start of construction, if approved, in 2016. Another difference, Fleming said, is that Kinder Morgan is pro-

posing to twin an existing pipeline on an established right-of-way, while the Enbridge proposal would push through “pristine” areas of northern B.C. According to a BC NDP new release, the party is taking a “principled” stance beside “businesses, First Nations, communities and ordinary citizens” who are opposed to the Enbridge pipeline. rfreeman@theprogress.com twitter.com/paperboy2

U.S. authorities will review the safety of Canadian oil tanker traffic in light of Kinder Morgan’s plan to more than double oil exports out of Vancouver harbour by twinning its Trans Mountain pipeline from Alberta. A Coast Guard authorization bill that President Barack Obama signed into law in late December contains amendments by Wash. Senator Maria Cantwell that target the tankers that load in Burnaby and sail along the international boundary through the Southern Gulf Islands and between Vancouver Island and the Olympic Peninsula. Under the new law, the U.S. Coast Guard must conduct a study this year to analyze oil spill risks from additional Canadian tanker traffic through the Salish Sea, placing the Trans Mountain expansion proposal under added scrutiny. “A supertanker oil spill near our shores would threaten Washington State’s thriving coastal economy and thousands of jobs,” Cantwell said in a statement on her website. “This bill will provide crucial information for Washington coastal communities by requiring a detailed risk analysis within 180 days.” The study is to assess the risks of increased traffic due to Canadian oil sands development – particularly whether Vancouver-bound tankers skirt stricter rules and regulations that apply on tankers in U.S. waters heading to Washington refineries. The law also directs an investigation of “whether

The term ‘iPhoneography’ is the art of shooting and processing photos entirely within an Apple iPhone. Over the course of this year, I will be using my iPhone 4S to capture images here in Chilliwack, and beyond. The photos will be of anything and everything including people, animals, nature, cityscapes, abstracts and more. The iPhone has its advantages (small and discreet) and its disadvantage (a single built-in lens, and nearly

everything is controlled automatically like the aperture and shutter speed). I believe iPhoneography will be challenging, yet fun. Frustrating at times, but also incredibly convenient as I always carry my phone with me. This is a chance for me to experience with a new form of photography, and share with you what can be done using a simple camera phone. Many of the images will never make it to our print editions, but they will be uploaded to our Flickr page on a regular basis of at least one photo per week.

The federal government is bent on pushing medical marijuana grow operations out of residential homes. Crime and safety – home invasions, faulty wiring and mould – are the main reasons, and the plan has the backing of fire chiefs in B.C. An apartment fire in Maple Ridge on Dec. 13, which left dozens of people homeless, illustrates their concerns, as investigators found three grow ops on the second floor, where the fire started, and which they believe was electrical in origin. But Health Canada has said that the proposed legislation, which would regulate medical marijuana grow ops and push them to industrial or agricultural areas, where they would be subject to inspections, will drive up the purchase price. Would that not fuel illegal grows and trade, similar to what occurs now? Wouldn’t that nullify any changes to eliminate safety risks? Part of the plan is to let Health Canada medical possession and grow licenses expire in 2014. They will, in future, be more difficult to acquire, which is good, as some seem to have fallen into hands that can’t resist growing more than their licenses permit, and selling to people other than those who need it for medicinal purposes. What if, under the new regulations, some who do need it for that reason can’t afford to buy from newly licensed growers? Who benefits then? The federal government’s plan seems only to serve those who can afford to establish commercial grow op businesses, and put those who subvert the process into prison. Why not regulate, license and disclose small grows in homes, window-sill-type operations for personal, medicinal use? Why not follow Washington and Colorado, and just legalize recreational use? Clearly there is much money to be made in marijuana, and in Canada, we’re wasting way too much money and time trying to curb what is beyond the control of our authorities. Taking away patients’ personal production licences is akin to punishing all because of a few bad seeds. ~ Black Press

Here is a real hero for aboriginal people

VICTORIA – The century-old plight of Canada’s aboriginal people is back in the public eye, thanks to protests dubbed Idle No More. As with Occupy protests last year, the demands are vague. One of the claims, repeated in media coverage of protests, is that the federal government is moving to end the historic Indian Act restriction against selling reserve land. A look at the federal legislation, Bill C-45, shows this is not the case. Amendments ease restrictive provisions for leasing reserve land, which remains property of the Crown held in perpetuity for the aboriginal community. This change was initiated by B.C. aboriginal leaders so they can follow the trail blazed by one of the most entrepreneurial chiefs in Canadian history.

His name is Ron Derrickson, and he served six terms as chief of the Westbank First Nation near Kelowna. One of my first big repor ting assignments was covering a Royal Commission into his administration’s business affairs in the mid1980s. There had been Tom an astonishing 17 FLETCHER federal investigations before that, stemming from local claims that Derrickson was just too successful. He drove a big black Mercedes, wore expensive suits, and established a bunch of enterprises, including Canada’s first water slide. The commission was chaired by John Hall, then known as the Crown prosecutor who put serial

killer Clifford Olson away, and now an appeal court judge. Derrickson’s suit jacket had a conspicuous bulge as he took the stand each day. He was packing a semi-automatic pistol, having demanded and received a carry permit after a brutal attempt on his life. The hit man, an ex-cop, was hired by people who didn’t like the bottom-line way Derrickson ran Westbank’s lease-hold mobile home parks. He showed up at Derrickson’s home one day and tried to beat him to death with a metal bar. Badly injured, Derrickson made it to his gun cabinet and shot his assailant, who survived to go to prison. Derrickson testified that his approach to the Indian Affairs bureaucracy was simple. He did business, and if they didn’t like it, they could tell him. Reserve land can’t be sold, so he leased it,

offering people a low-cost way to enjoy the sunny Okanagan. His business plan was also simple. Drive to California and see what they’re doing. Drive back and do it in B.C. A 2007 profile of Derrickson by Greg Fjetland in <I>Canadian Business</I> magazine describes how he came by his approach to Ottawa. He grew up “dirt poor, living in a tar paper shack.” His family name was Tousawasket, until the local Indian Agent drew an Anglo name out of a hat. He and his brother were the first aboriginal kids to attend public school in Kelowna. Racist bullying drove his parents to move him to a residential school in Washington State. He dropped out in Grade 9, toiled on farms, learned to weld, and worked his way into ranching, real estate and politics. He never gave up or backed down,

Derrickson sued his local accusers and won, and Ottawa began to change its racist, paternalistic ways. Which brings us back to today. Derrickson’s pioneering work is still changing the Indian Act for the better. This effort is under dishonest attack from people whose legacy is mainly incompetence and failure. Protesters demand more unearned public subsidy, and a petulant soup-only strike is celebrated as an act of bravery. Choose your own hero. I’ve chosen mine. Help for homeless available Re: Homeless on the rise in Chilliwack (Progress Jan. 8) I appreciated Claire Woyke’s letter highlighting the needs of homeless individuals and families living in Chilliwack. This is a growing issue within our community and one that requires ongoing awareness and community action. Her data, though, incorrectly stated that 21.4 percent of people living in Chilliwack are homeless. Regardless of the accuracy of the numbers, she rightly acknowledged the fine work of the Salvation Army providing food services and shelter

beds to address some of the burgeoning needs of homelessness and poverty in our city. However, it needs to be added that Ruth & Naomi’s Mission in downtown Chilliwack provides 14 emergency shelter beds each night, a helpful open day program, an evening supper meal that serves up to 150 people 365 days per year, and a 26-bed supportive housing complex for people struggling with homeless, addictions and other stressful life issues. With the help of our caring community partners and professional staff, the Mission

has been able to help transition people successfully back into the community. As we continue to partner with individuals, organizations, churches and other service providers, together, we are making a difference in the lives of vulnerable people living downtown. We’re also excited about our future plans to broaden and expand our services to bring continuing hope and freedom to those trapped in cycles of poverty and addiction.

Balance needed in farmed salmon debate

Re: Lunch hour stand for wild salmon (Progress, Jan. 8). Chilliwack is my home town. I was born there. I grew up there, fishing the Vedder, working on farms, working in feed mills which ser ve those farms. I bought groceries at this Superstore. Many of my fam-

The Angus Reid poll found 57 per cent support for a unified police force in the region. Perspectives Relationship resolutions for the new year As Marie Amos wrote last week this time of year brings about talk and setting of New Year’s resolutions. Her suggestion was to create simple goals that are easily accomplished and achieved; and it left me thinking about my own resolutions. Normally, I don’t even create them - I’m more of a set-a-goalwhenever-you-want-to type of person - but I thought this year I might make a set of resolutions based upon a theme. Relationships. We all have them, we’re all in them, and we all need them. In fact, humans survive and thrive on connection. So I will share my relationship resolutions with you in hopes that they might inspire you to create similar goals to enhance the connections in your lives. My Significant Other I resolve to continue to do the little things that are meaningful to him, and add in new ones; such as: getting up early with him even when I don’t have to, making his coffee and breakfast, giving proper and attentive hellos and goodbyes, texting him throughout the day to check in,

and going to bed when he does. My Child I resolve to take as much delight in the things he does or is interested in as he does. That my eyes and face will light up, that I will exclaim, that I will be silly, that I will slow down, and that I will put off other things to spend 5 more minutes playing Hungry Hippos or mini hockey. Eryn My Parents WICKER I resolve to remember that they are now friends first, parents and aging individuals (I now like to parent) second. Instead of inviting them over for dinner as a favour to my mom to not have to cook one night I could invite them individually for coffee or a movie or other outing. My Friends/Colleagues I resolve to use less sarcasm. Who am I kidding…I’m not even sure that’s possible, and there’s no sense setting myself up for failure. But I can resolve to highlight their strengths and point

out their positive qualities in addition to my usual witty banter. To Strangers My uncle’s nickname for me is Smiley. Individuals at the office where I work always comment on how friendly and smiling I am. My friends and family are laughing as they read this as they know me to be more aloof and serious. I don’t think I lost my smile but I think I tend to move so quickly through life that I sometimes forget to give it as freely as I should. I resolve to continue to smile at strangers and acquaintances and construction crews and my Starbucks baristas, etc. My resolutions are as simple as this: If I don’t feel valued, I don’t feel loved. If I don’t feel loved, then I don’t feel secure. And we’re all the same in that way…so by making other people feel valued and loved and secure then I can meet their needs and role model how they can meet mine.

Historic play echoes issues of today Jennifer Feinberg

schools. Thomson’s subject matter, of curtailed hunting and trapping rights and culture clash, is pretty serious, says the director. “But like his other plays, you’re also laughing for two thirds of it,” she says. Some of the humour is decidedly risqué. Set design is by the same person who did the set and costumes for last Year’s Arabian Nights production. With this project, set designer and scenographer Jay Havens, a UFV alum, has been collaborating with students in creating a cohesive look for the production, partly in his role of artist-in-residence. “The show has a really spectacular look to it,” she says. “They’ve been having design meetings since last September and they’ve done a fantastic job. “There will be extensive use of projections, with attention to lighting, costume design and more.” Assistant director is Gabby Bohmer. Costume design is by Aaron Froc, with lighting design by Gabriel Kirkley and sound design by Dylan Coulter. Stage manager is Cait Archer.

The Progress

It’s the first 2013 production by UFV Theatre with bittersweet, funny and historical elements. In Ernestine Shuswap Gets Her Trout, four women of the Shuswap, Okanagan and Thompson First Nations are preparing for a sumptuous feast to honour Canadian Prime Minister Sir Wilfrid Laurier in 1910. Everything must be perfect for the visit, from the Saskatoon pies, to stuffed beaver, and of course, Ernestine’s famous trout. Events over 100 years — from first contact to the time of Sir Laurier’s arrival — are creatively condensed into the time frame of a single day in the play. The topics are also relevant in the current age of the Idle No More movement, says director Heather Davis-Fisch. She picked the Thomson Highway play, Ernestine Shuswap Gets Her Trout for the UFV Theatre students last April. “It’s crazy. We were talking about how shocking and how contemporary it is, with some of the same questions coming up. “It shows some of the issues raised in Idle No More have a history that stretches back a hundred years. I think it’s a cool way of representing history.” It’s the first time in the director’s chair at UFV for Davis-Fisch, and the first time as well on the main stage for all four actors. Lisa Apps takes on the title role of Ernestine, while Mandy Dyck plays Isabel, Phaydra-Rae Gagnon is Delilah Rose and Geneva Perkins is Annabelle. “What I think it says is that we probably still have a long way to go to

get some of these issues between the federal government and First Nations resolved,” she says. “Canada has a lot to work out, and the play really shows it.”

Gary was laid off last year. Previous disappointments, knee replacement surgery, and a growing distrust of government programs fueled a frustration and fear of his future. He was convinced he would need to take a low paying unskilled job that wouldn’t pay the bills. Staff at WorkBC met with Gary several times to help alleviate some of his anxiety, and develop a plan to find suitable employment. First step was to obtain a new set of marketable skills, and fortunately Gary discovered he was eligible for financial assistance through EI. Many years ago, Gary had worked on air craft while in the Armed Forces and he remembered liking it. He continued to be skeptical about what his future held, yet followed through with an application into an Aircraft Structures program … and was happily surprised when accepted. Today, Gary is at the top of his class as a registered apprentice and will complete the program in July 2013. The spring in his step has returned, despite two bad knees, and he speaks of his future with confidence and hope.

Darlene Koller: Investing in her community Darlene Koller is a woman with a great sense of style! She is incredibly fashion savvy; everything from the clothes that she wears, combined with the right accessories, to her footwear, the complementing hair style and makeup and her choice of fragrance, that rounds out her stylish and fashionable nature. However, as it is said, beauty is only skin deep and that’s why she was also fortunate to be graced with the Ana ability to be pleasMacedo ant, kind, intelligent and empathetic. Darlene’s family moved to Yarrow from Vancouver when she was just five years old. “My father had farmed as a young man and my mom was from Alberta and they also farmed so they decided to buy their own property,” she said. At the age of 21, Darlene’s father had emigrated from the island of Sao Jorge; an island located in the central Azorean archipelago of Portugal. The island is relatively long and thin with tall cliffs and many of its inhabitants live off the land or sea. Her father worked hard but earned little. “My father bought his first pair of shoes just before immigrating to Canada. He had to work a whole month just to pay for the shoes. He arrived in Quebec during the winter and wore his new, leather shoes which

were quickly ruined. He then had to buy a new pair to go to church but this time, as he would tell me, he only had to work three days to be able to afford a new pair,” she chuckled. Darlene loved the farm. They had cows, horses, geese, chickens, cats, dogs and other assorted creatures. “I loved the barn cats and we had Shetland ponies that I used to ride with my friend, at the back of the property. My mom made butter, we had to gather eggs, I was expected to dig up potatoes and pick strawberries. We had to feed the animals and carried lumber from one place to another. My dad was always adding or fixing our house so there was always lumber that had to be moved,” she mused. Her parents also owned a janitorial company but as the business grew, they found that they were spending less and less time farming, so they decided to sell it and moved to the Sardis Park area. By the time that Darlene graduated from Sardis Senior Secondary School, her parents had divorced and her father had relocated to California. “After graduation, I went to California for five months and tried my hand at cosmetology but I dropped out of beauty school,” she laughed. She was homesick for Chilliwack and decided to return. At 19, Darlene had her first child and although she worked hard at being a good mother, she didn’t give up on her dream to be involved in commerce and she

was relentless in her quest for a job in the world of finance. “After applying and applying and applying for a job, I was hired at what was then Fraser Valley Credit Union and it was my dream job,” she smiled. After seven years with the Credit Union, Darlene moved over to the Hong Kong Bank of Canada, now HSBC, and began working in the financial planning side of things. She remained

there for 14 years but a year ago became an Associate Portfolio Manager with RBC Dominion Securities, working on the brokerage side of the financial world. “I took a Canadian Investment Funds course back in 1993 and then attended BCIT and earned an Associate Certificate in Financial Management and Financial Planning in 1996. I also learned about financial planning through the Canadian Institute of

Financial Planning and acquired my Certified Financial Planner designation three years later. In 2004, I became a Chartered Investment Manager through the Canadian Securities Institute. in another program as she works towards becoming a Fellow of the Canadian Securities Institute. It is imperative that she stays on top of all the financial information that’s out there so that she remains current at all times. “I read a lot but there are many resources available through our company,” she said. No matter how hectic things may be, Darlene takes everything in stride. “I have a terrific job. It’s never the same and my clients are wonderful. Over time, you develop a relationship and a bond with them and they actually become like family.” When she has some down time, Darlene enjoys playing the piano. “I began playing about three years ago and I quite enjoy it,” she said. She also likes to ski, golf and just generally being outdoors. “Chilliwack has beautiful scenery so I tend to spend as much time outside as possible.” She also gives back to her community by being an active member of the Mt. Cheam Rotary Club, in addition to sitting on the board of the Chilliwack Hospice Society, where she chairs the finance committee. “I’m truly enjoying my life which I guess is what everyone aspires to do,” she ended.

Division rivals make first visit The Chilliwack Chiefs look to get back on track with a busy three-game weekend, starting Friday night with a crucial division clash. The Prince George Spruce Kings are in town for the first time this season, trying to make the Mainland division a three horse race. Chilliwack and Surrey are tied atop the five-team division with 46 points apiece. The Spruce Kings sit four points back though they’ve also played one more game. This is the third meeting of the season between

Chilliwack and the Spruce Kings. The Chiefs traveled the Prince George for back to back games at the end of November. They won both, by scores of 6-0 and 2-0, with Mitch Gillam stopping 31 shots in each. Scoring goals is an area the Spruce Kings struggle in. PG has 104 goals in 36 games, a 2.88 goals-pergame average. Only three teams — Vernon, Salmon Arm and Cowichan Valley — have scored fewer, and that’s not company you want to be keeping.

Prince George does not have a point-per-game scorer, and their leading sniper, Tyson Witala, has just 14 goals. The Spruce Kings are better at keeping the puck out of the net, led by starting goaltender Kirk Thompson. The 20-year-old Surrey native has 17 wins in 33 appearances with a .918 save percentage and 2.64 goals-against average. The Chiefs have endured some offensive struggles of late, limping along without the services of top six forwards Josh Hansen and Ryan Donohoe. There was some thought

Hansen might be ready this weekend, but head coach Harvey Smyl said no Wednesday morning. After Friday night, the Chiefs hit the road for two on the Island. They’re in Victoria Saturday night, taking on a powerful Grizzlies squad that sits in a tie with Penticton for first overall in the BCHL. The Chiefs go from first to worst Sunday afternoon when they take on an awful Cowichan Valley Capitals squad that sports a record of 9-20-1-3. Brenner tournament The annual tournament features a full slate of games at the bantam rep A2, A3 and C levels. The A2 Bruins start things off Friday night, facing a squad that has travelled a long way to be here. Chilliwack plays Alberta’s Sherwood Park at Twin Rinks starting at 6:45 p.m. Sherwood Park is a community just three kilometres east of Edmonton, and they are known for icing skilled hockey teams.

“Playing teams like that takes skill, patience and discipline,” said Chilliwack coach Doug Wilson. “Playing teams like Sherwood Park and Port Moody will be a good test for our team, and only make them stronger as they gear up for the remainder of the regular season and a playoff push.” Team captain Brock Menges and assistants Ryan Trottier and Jacob Wilson lead the Bruins into two games on Saturday.

They’re on the ice at Prospera Centre (red rink) at 8 a.m. taking on Richmond A2. They take on Port Moody A1 at 1 p.m. on Twin Rinks No. 2. Wilson’s crew has a record of 12-4-4 since early October. Sunday’s semi-finals take place at Twin Rinks starting at 12:30 p.m. with the finals at 4 p.m. Raffle tables and various draws (including 50/50) will all be available during the tournament.

Today is trade deadline day in the BCHL. Teams have until 6 p.m. to make trades with teams from other provinces, and until 8 p.m. to make trades with other teams in the BCHL. Don’t expect to hear any official trade announcements today as the league has a rule that no trades made today can be officially announced until 10 a.m. Friday. It’s a strange rule in my opinion. It takes some of the fun of the day away from fans. No rule will stop details of trades from unofficially leaking out and I think it would be better for information to come from teams involved rather than leaks from other sources. When trying to guess which players will be on the move (or by the time you read this, have been moved) the basic rule is to look at the teams near the bottom of the standings and unlikely to make the playoffs, then look at their roster for the best players that are not expected to be back in the league next season. Using that logic it’s easy to assume that Vernon and Trail’s phones have been ringing for some time now and there are likely a number of teams calling them. The other obvious team to start thinking about next season is Cowichan, but they made that decision some time ago and have dealt away most if not all of their desirable players. So again, if the Chiefs

make any moves today you will not see the official announcement until Friday morning at 10 a.m. After the trade deadline distraction is over, the Chiefs will play a tough trio of games this weekend. The Prince George Spruce Kings make their first visit of the season to Chilliwack Friday night. The Chiefs are tied for first with Surrey in the Mainland division and the Spruce Kings are just four points back. The Chiefs then take to the road for games Saturday night in Victoria and Sunday in Cowichan. Victoria, a laughing stock last season with Len Barrie calling the shots, has made an incredible turnaround under the direction of general manager and head coach Bill Bestwick. Bill has the team in first place in the BCHL and ranked top 10 nationally. Sunday’s game may look easy on paper, as Cowichan sits in last place with just nine wins this season, but it’s the Chiefs third game in three days and it’s an afternoon game. Those are never easy. The Chiefs will be announcing two new ticket packages very soon. One will involve the two remaining sets of back-toback home games the Chiefs play on Friday/Saturday nights. The other will be a Valentine’s package that will be a sweetheart of a deal. jb@chilliwackchiefs.net

Cascades top national rankings For the first time in school history, the University of the Fraser Valley’s women’s basketball team is ranked No. 1 in the country. It is the first time any UFV team has been ranked No. 1 in the seven years the school has been affiliated with CIS. Loaded with Chilliwack stars (Nicole and Sarah Wierks, Courtney Bartel, Kayli Sartori and Alexa McCarthy), the Cascades are 9-1 overall. Sarah Wierks leads the team with a 13.3 points-per-game average with 7.9 rebounds per game. Nicole Wierks scores 12.1 ppg and Sartori nets 11.8. The Cascades are a perfect 4-0 at home (Abbotsford’s Envision Athletic Centre) and 5-1 on the road. Their only loss was on the road in Regina where they lost by four points, 59-55.

After an eight week break the KTM Canadian Arenacross Championship fires up again Jan. 18-19 at Chilliwack’s Heritage Park. Rounds seven and eight will feature top pro riders from across Canada and the United States, joined by a full field of elite amateurs. Bob passed away peacefully at home in Richmond, BC. Predeceased by his parents Frank and Elva Lane, sister Barbara and brother George. Survived by his wife Jean (née Mowatt); children Duncan (Anne), Jennifer Tutt (Richard), Randy (Gail Bell); grandchildren Stephanie Lane (Nick), Brittany Tutt (Jay) and Graeme Tutt (Sarah); great grandson Roman; special great aunt Cora Hallett; and many cousins. Born in Consort, Alberta, Bob and his family moved to Vancouver where he attended Lord Byng High School (‘45) and UBC (Arts ‘49). Bob and Jean met while attending UBC and celebrated their 60th anniversary in June 2012. Following graduation from the University of Toronto (‘53), Bob practiced medicine in Bella Bella (‘54-‘55), Sardis (Coqualeetza) (‘56- ‘57) ; Chilliwack (‘58-‘79) and as a medical officer with the Workers’ Compensation Board in Richmond (‘79-‘89). Bob enjoyed many sports, especially skiing with his children and golf with his high school buddies. While at U of T, he won a big block letter in soccer. Hobbies included soapstone carving, stained glass work and gardening. One time president of the Phi Kappa Pi fraternity at U of T and of the Chilliwack and Upper Fraser Valley Medical Societies. Served on Board of Directors of the BCMA and as a school trustee while in Chilliwack. Special thanks to Drs. Stanley Hurwitz, Teddi Orenstein and Anthony Chiu for their great care over so many years. It was sincerely appreciated. Flowers gratefully declined. A donation to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of BC & Yukon in Bob’s name would be appreciated. Private service by request of family.

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Eva Dyble at Eden Care Centre, DYBLE Chilliwack, BC on Dec. 16, 2012 at age 96. Eva was born in Rocky Mountain House, Alberta on April 22, 1916. She spent her younger days on the homestead until the Lewis family moved to Chilliwack in 1929. There she met Tom and they were married in 1935. Their first permanent home was at 14 Railway Ave, Chilliwack. She resided in Chilliwack, Except for nineteen years in various places in the Okanagan. Eva is survived by her sister, Bette Keller (Art), her son, Ken (Ann) and her daughter, Shirley Bowman (Murray); grandchildren, Lisa Dyble (Eddie), Glen Dyble (Karen) and Leanne Bowman (Greg) and great grandchildren, Logan and Tarrah. STORTEBOOM John John Storteboom passed into the presence of our Lord peacefully in the early morning STORTEBOOM of January 8, 2013. He immigrated with his bride to Canada in 1953 where they began their family on the Sumas Prairie. Oct. 5, 1943 Dec. 27, 2012 Larry passed away peacefully into the arms of Jesus with his wife WIEBE Doreen at his side. After a long battle with cancer, he leaves behind his loving wife Doreen of 40 years, children Angela (Peter) and Christopher (Tara), and the great joys of his life, his six grandchildren Iain, Spencer, Charlie, Maddison, Logan, and Keira, as well as many loving nieces, nephews and cousins. Larry was predeceased by his parents George and Mary Wiebe and his sister Francis. Born in Trail, BC and having grown up in Chilliwack, BC, Larry graduated from the University of BC with a BSc. in Physics. He lived most of his life in Abbotsford, where he raised his family and then retired from Simon Fraser University in 2007 as a Senior Lecturer after 22 years of service. Larry was also very active with the Royal Canadian Army Cadets (CIC) for 10 years in the 1990s in Aldergrove. Larry will be greatly missed

y family and friends. His desire was to always â€œspeak the truth in loveâ€? and was passionate about his love for God, sharing every time he had the opportunity, whether in the pool hall or at work. Special thanks to the ARHCC Oncology Ward and Palliative Care Ward, and especially to the Christine Morrison Hospice in Mission for their loving care of him. A Celebration of Life service will be conducted by Valley Christian Ministries Church, which he attended. nee: Curry Yvonne Miller (nee Curry) born in New Westminster October 28, 1922, passed away January 7, 2013 in White Rock after a brief illness. Mom married her life-long partner, Ralph S. Miller of Burnaby, in 1948 and raised two children, Rosslynne and Scott. Yvonne worked Spencerâ€™s lunch counter on Columbia St., New West as one of her first jobs. â€œThose were the daysâ€?, she would say, â€œWrapping everything in brown paper and stringâ€?. Later she became a dental assistant to Dr. Pentland in the Block Tower, also in New West. Mom loved the water, not just the ocean. She was a team coach as well as a judge of synchronized swimming. Curling, gardening, playing pool and especially writing poetry were highlights of her life. Yvonne is survived by her sister Gwen (Cliff) Barker of Arizona; daughter, Rosslynne (Robert); granddaughter, Lauren (Greg) Brown; great-grandson Dylan; niece, Annmarie Gates (Eden); and three nephews: Paul and Barry Berrettoni, and Stephen Barker. Thanks to her special companion and many friends at Crescent Gardens for making Momâ€™s 10 years of residence a pleasant experience. Private family arrangements.
