Taking the plunge in Port Moody, hundreds kick off 2013 with a splash

DEVIN JAIN/CITY OF PORT MOODY

There were costumes, crazy hats and a large group of brave swimmers clad in gold tights ringing in the New Year at the annual Penguin Plunge Tuesday morning at Port Moody’s Rocky Point Park. It’s estimated up to 3,000 people came out to cheer on the plungers, who were able to stay warm beside the PoMo firefighters’ bonfire, and check out the historical photographs and artefacts display to kick off PoMo’s centennial celebrations. The Pleasantside Community Association’s Nicki Forster estimated a record 375 swimmers registered for the Penguin Plunge. For photos from Tri-City News readers, see page 3.

Home values up in Tri-Cities Home values rise up to 5.59% in assessment roll By Janis Warren THE TRI-CITY NEWS

The Tri-Cities is a bright spot for property values compared with the rest of the Metro Vancouver, according to rolls released this week.

BC Assessment reports the North Fraser region, which includes the TriCities, showed combined increases for all residential properties — from single-family homes to townhouses and condos — at: • 5.59% in Coquitlam; • 3.04% in Port Moody; • 2.21% in Anmore; • and 1.69% in Port Coquitlam. In Belcarra, however,

property owners saw an average drop of 4.85% in their values. The biggest single increase in the region was for a single-family house — built 29 years ago in central Coquitlam — whose value jumped about $60,000 to $800,000. As well, a detached home on Burke Mountain in Coquitlam went up $40,000 from last year, according to the roll.

WHAT’S YOUR HOME WORTH? To check your assessment, go to bcassessment.ca, click on “e-ValueBC” and follow the steps. But a two-bedroom suite in a Coquitlam strata low-rise, built in 1990, dropped $16,000 while a Citadel Heights t o w n h o m e i n Po r t Coquitlam, built in 1994, sunk $15,000 — largely

due to an oversupply of such units, said deputy assessor Zina Weston, who called this year relatively “status quo” for land values in the TriCities. Meanwhile, Tri-City

commercial and industrial land values went up as much as 20% in neighbourhoods such as Burquitlam and Moody Centre — in part because of official community plan and zoning changes, and the upcoming Evergreen Line that is due to be built by the summer of 2016 from Burnaby to Coquitlam. see TRI-CITIES, page 12

2013 PENGUIN PLUNGE: Annual (cold, wet) event kicks off Port Moody’s centennial year

ROBERT MCDONALD PHOTO

HARRY WARREN PHOTO

Tri-City residents by the hundreds attended the annual Penguin Plunge on New Year’s Day at Port Moody’s Rocky Point Park. Presented by the city and the Pleasantside Community association, the first big event of PoMo’s centennial year featured a bevy of brave souls — many under-dressed or extravagantly dressed (above, left and right) — running or walking down the boat launch ramp into the frigid waters of Burrard Inlet. Below left, PoMo Mayor Mike Clay (clad in gold lamé tights and a festive jacket, below centre) added a chunk of ice to those waters to make sure they were nice and cold. Some (below right and second from bottom, centre) attended for the fun of watching others (bottom row) seize the day. And all — especially those who had hit the water — enjoyed a crackling bonfire started, supervised and later put out by Port Moody firefighters.

Drunks, fights and (no) zombies: New Year’s Eve in the Tri-Cities By Sarah Payne The Tri-CiTy News

It was a night of drunken fights, loud parties, a topped-up drunk tank and even a teenager trying to escape from zombies for the Coquitlam RCMP and Port Moody Police on NewYear’s Eve. Coquitlam RCMP Cpl. Jamie Chung said Monday night was “busy and steady” for Mounties, with several fights — one involving a group of people that resulted in one man needing staples to close the gash on his head and the other between two people arguing over figurines. One person was removed from that altercation but it wasn’t clear what happened to the figurines. There were calls about “drunks yelling/stumbling on the street and sleeping on the road,” in addition to at least 12 noise complaints, according to Chung. And the teen trying to escape from zombies? “When we got there, we found him passed out on his vehicle,” Chung said. “We determined he did not suffer any serious injuries (whether they

OPERATION RED NOSE BUSY

A dramatic increase in the number of people taking advantage of Operation Red Nose has led to the best fundraising year since the organization launched in the Tri-Cities in 2007. This holiday season, 864 people called ORN for a safe ride home, helping the volunteer-run group raise more than $27,000 for KidSport TriCities. That is a jump from 2011, when 556 rides were offered raising more than $17,000. A part of the reason for the increase in overall numbers stems from the fact that Operation Red Nose, which offers rides to people who are under the influence, expanded into Burnaby in New Westminster this year. But even when the Tri-City numbers are isolated, Operation Red Nose organizer Chris Wilson said there has been at least a 24% increase in ridership. The increased popularity of the program also led to a jump in the number of volunteers. In 2011, 139 people helped out, compared to 262 in 2012. were inflicted by zombies or not) and he was transported to hospital.” In Port Moody, Const. Luke van Winkel said the evening was a tame one that included drunken arguments at parties, loitering youths and post-midnight noise complaints. The night began with a pedestrian being hit by a vehicle at about 7:30 p.m. The woman was crossing Noons Creek Drive in a crosswalk when a driver turn-

ing left onto Ungless Way hit her. The driver stopped and the woman was taken to hospital with minor injuries; no charges are being sought at this point and alcohol was not a factor. Later in the evening, officers responded to reports of about 30 teenagers on Ioco Road who were hitting buses as they stopped and banging on the windows; they fled before police arrived. Another group of

youths figured the area a ro u n d C ro s s ro a d s Hospice — where people who are terminally ill spend their final days — was a good place to set off firecrackers. A 17-year-old youth was arrested for assault after a fight with a 15-year-old over the older boy’s sister; he was released on a promise to

appear and turned over to his guardian. And one unlucky man who went for a quick walk at 2 a.m. got a bad start to his new year when he returned 15 minutes later, he discovered someone had walked through his unlocked door and stolen his laptop computer.

16-year-old sought Coquitlam RCMP are asking for the public’s help in locating a missing 16-year-old boy. Tryston Colinn was reported missing on Wednesday and was last heard from on Wednesday, Dec. 27; he has a condition that requires he take medication. He’s described as a Caucasian about 6’ tall and weighing 145 lb.; Colinn has hazel eyes and short brown hair, and was last seen wearing a pair of red, black and grey denim pants. Investigators believe Colinn may have travelled to the Interior to meet a friend. Anyone who sees Colinn is cautioned not to approach him but to call 911 or Coquitlam RCMP at 604-945-1550 and quote file number 2013-176.

Recycle lights, Styrofoam Firefighters work with local firms By Diane Strandberg The Tri-CiTy News

Getting rid of burnedout Christmas lights and bulky packaging is a little easier this year thanks to a collaboration between Port Coquitlam firefighters and local recycling businesses. This weekend, Jan. 5 and 6 between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., you can drop off your used Styrofoam, light strands and Christmas lights at the No. 1 fire hall in Port Coquitlam. Drop-off is by donation, with proceeds going directly towards the BC Professional Fire Fighters Association Burn Fund. The two participating companies are Happy Stan’s Recycling, of PoCo, and Foam Only, a Coquitlam company that compresses Styrofoam brand foam for use in consumer products such as picture frames and door mouldings. Ja m i e K a m i n s k i , owner of Happy Stan’s, a 20-year-old company that offers recycling services, office shredding and junk removal, said the holiday light and foam recycling program is timed to help people deal with their excess waste while contributing to a good cause. It’s taking place at the same time as the Port Coquitlam firefighters’ annual tree chipping event, with $5 donations for each tree also going to the burn fund. Firefighters are donating their time for this event and the wood chips will be used in city parks and trails. Kaminski said it’s a

More charges against PoMo man; no video testimony By Sarah Payne The Tri-CiTy News

A Port Moody man who recently served two years in prison for criminally harassing his ex-wife will soon be sentenced on 10 new charges, this time for kidnapping and assault. According to court documents, Safa Malakpour and his wife divorced in 2006 after 20 years of marriage. The following year, he was sentenced to 27 months for criminal harassment but shortly after he was released in March 2009, he made threatening comments that landed him back in the Matsqui Penitentiary.

He was released again in August 2009 to a Vancouver halfway house but left after a few days. PoMo Police began investigating Malakpour that October after receiving new allegations of harassment and threats; he was arrested last month in Montreal. The latest charges stem from incidents that took place last January, after which Malakpour was charged with kidnapping, assault with a weapon, assault causing bodily harm, criminal harassment, uttering threats and breach of probation. After a trial in May he was found guilty in September 2012.

A trial for the outstanding charges from Port Moody in October 2009, as well as for breach of probation related to the January 2012 incidents, is scheduled to begin Jan. 25. In B.C. Provincial Court in Port Coquitlam Thursday morning Crown counsel Mark Wolf made an applica-

tion before the judge to have Malakpour’s ex-wife testify on the breach matter, which included a no-contact order with the woman, via video from outside the courtroom. Wolf told the court that Malakpour doesn’t recognize the divorce or Canadian law, noting that during the trial in May 2012,

he had to be removed from the court twice because of outbursts in which he shouted at his ex-wife and called her names in Farsi. Wolf said Malakpour’s ex-wife is “very fearful” of him and would be extremely uncomfortable being in the same room as him, which may prevent her

from giving a full and honest testimony. Malakpour’s lawyer Faraz Arbabi argued that testifying via video makes it difficult to hand the witness documents and prevents the judge from assessing the witness’s credibility based on facial expressions and gestures.

Judge H. Walters suggested the trial can begin with the witness testifying from behind a screen inside the courtroom. He also cautioned Arbabi to ensure his client remains under control, saying, “I’ll be watching him like a hawk” to ensure there are no outbursts. spayne@tricitynews.com

Greens pick candidate Stanbrough will challenge NDP’s Robinson The Green Party of BC has a candidate to run in this spring’s provincial election in CoquitlamMaillardville. This week, the riding association acclaimed Edward Stanbrough to run in the riding currently held by NDP MLA Diane Thorne, who is retiring. Stanbrough, 24, a New

Westminster resident who has been a party member for a month, told The Tri-City News yesterday he is“sick of the NDP and the BC Liberals” governing the province. “I want to help the Greens get elected and make things better,” said the recent anthropology graduate of Kwantlen Polytechnic University who is seeking political office for the first time. In the 2009 provincial election, Green contender Stephen Reid took 5%

of the vote in CoquitlamMaillardville; under Michael Hejazi in 2005, the party won 6% in the riding, down from the 12% Elly Petersen drew in 2001. In May, Stanbrough will face NDP candidate Selina Robinson, a Coquitlam city councillor who was acclaimed last November. The BC Liberals have yet to select their candidate for the Coquitlam-Maillardville race. jwarren@tricitynews.com

O

n paper, the net worth of thousands of Tri-City residents has either climbed slightly or dropped a bit thanks to changes in property values calculated by BC Assessment. Are these changes anything to worry about? Not really. There appears to be no significant downturn in value, suggesting a housing bubble is not about to be burst, and with tax rates based on total assessments and the burden shared among various classifications (commercial, industrial, residential, etc.), individual homeowners shouldn’t have to worry about huge swings in taxes if their holdings are in the average range. Most property owners can expect to pay 2% to 4% more in city taxes and anyone with property values significantly out of whack is encouraged to contact the BC Assessment authority. Anyone not considering a housing change this year can pretty much ignore these valuations. As for those considering buying or selling, while prices seem to be holding steady, their decisions, as always, will have to be based on price and affordability — now and in the long run.

From Terai to Tri-Cities: the power of volunteerism LETTER FROM NEPAL Tanya Lee

“I

’m interested in your thoughts on Thursday’s elections,”I asked, interrupting a conversation on widespread unemployment in Nepal. The three local men at my table, highly opinionated entrepreneurs, responded with blank stares. In unison they chimed:“What elections?” It was a local joke, they explained over imported whiskey and Newari delicacies that included bone marrow and deep-fried water buffalo tongue. What does it mean to have a democracy, they asked me, in a country where it makes sense in some communities to sell an organ today to ensure that you have rice for tomorrow? Political instability in Nepal has hampered the government’s ability to address today’s pressing development needs. Nepal’s nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) are underfunded and overwhelmed.

Similarly in Canada, the global recession has led to decreased government spending. Highly valued community and school-based programs have seen their funding vanish. The resultant gap in service provision is an issue shared by developed and developing nations alike. With the piggy bank shattered, how can we continue to meet community needs? One solution may lie in volunteerism. Thanks to an internship with Ottawa-based Human Rights Internet (funded by the Canadian International Development Agency), I have recently had the opportunity to speak with several community based organizations in Nepal’s politically unstable Terai region. Despite barriers such as illiteracy and extreme poverty, local women have been actively disseminating information on women’s health, safe migration and gender-based violence within their communities. Some of these groups have been active for close to a decade purely on a voluntary basis. While the Tri-City area already boasts a strong culture of volunteerism, there are opportunities to increase the number of commu-

nity members involved, specifically targeting persons with different abilities, elderly persons and youth. Along with addressing community issues, community based organizations have an additional, extremely important benefit: They provide members with a sense of belonging. When I was 14 years old, my best friend and I spent weeks telephoning different organizations looking for volunteer opportunities. Obtaining a position as a volunteer was almost as difficult as finding employment in today’s limited job market. When I was accepted as a volunteer at Eagle Ridge Manor, I was ecstatic. For almost two years, I visited elderly residents weekly, spoon feeding them and nattering on about my day. It provided me with relief from the identity I carried the rest of the week as the nurses and patients saw me differently than did my peers. Creating a culture of volunteerism — in Coquitlam or halfway around the world — requires that volunteer opportunities become more accessible. A lengthy process riddled with rejection discourages potential volunteers. The women’s groups in Nepal did not form

on their own; NGOs initiated the groups, providing them with training and resources. Surprisingly, despite living in extreme poverty, the Nepali women I spoke with did not ask for salaries but they did ask for uniforms so that others could identify them as members of a group. Competition is constantly present in our lives: for grades, for jobs, for partners. Considering the current focus on anti-bullying, the need for inclusive social spaces is especially relevant for youth. Reduced subsidies for art or music programs? Perhaps it’s possible to meet these needs as a community. Volunteerism presents an opportunity to address current issues and create new forms of social belonging, ones based on collaboration rather than competition. Two giant birds, one volunteer-chucked stone.

Tanya Lee, 26, grew up in Coquitlam, where she attended Hillcrest middle school and Centennial secondary, and where her family still lives. She’s contributing a column to The Tri-City News about her work with a human rights NGO and maintaining a blog at goneadventurin.wordpress.com.

“We perform heart surgery, even on people who made stupid dietary decisions and who ignored the many warnings and danger signs along the way.” Jim Nelson What’s your take on this week’s Face to Face topic and what they have to say? Email your thoughts to newsroom@tricitynews.com.

Why single out these people? S

ebastian Boucher, an Ottawa snowboarder, is being billed $10,000 by Cypress Mountain to help defray his recent rescue. On cue, angry bloggers (and at least one Tri-City News columnist) enthusiastically proclaim support. “It’s about time... if they won’t hang him (which we might prefer), then make him pay $10,000 or even $20,000”or whatever Cypress Mountain, a private company, arbitrarily decides he owes for its rescue efforts; gas, helicopter depreciation, lost sleep, double-time salary, coffee and doughnuts. Please, we’re better than this. We shouldn’t be billing people we save from peril. Rescue efforts are humanitarian and altruistic. They are undertaken to save people, even those who make stupid decisions or disastrous mistakes. We save flood, fire and tornado victims, even if they didn’t evacuate or respond properly to repeated weather or evacuation warnings. We perform heart surgery, even on people who made stupid dietary decisions bound to cost us all, and who ignored the many warnings and danger signs along the way. But we don’t present them with a bill for such humanitarian services; otherwise, they’re not humanitarian.

Mr. Boucher made a stupid decision, one that almost cost him his life. His harrowing experience both punished and deterred him; he won’t reoffend and he doesn’t need further deterrence or punishment. North Shore Rescue volunteers don’t want people to be billed for rescues. Its members say doing so would discourage missing people from seeking rescue and encourage illtrained friends and family to bumble off into dangerous wilderness areas to avoid professional rescuer costs. North Shore Rescue also says billing people for rescue might even encourage victims to hide from rescuers and take escape risks they wouldn’t normally take, all to save a few bucks. Mr. Boucher’s rescue is a happy story. We should be applauding the rescuers and his saved life rather than demanding recompense almost before his toes have warmed up. We need to lighten up. Shrill demands for harsh punishments seek not deterrence, but vengeance. If a judge feels restorative justice is appropriate, he can assign the rescued person to help raise money for North Shore Rescue or to perform related civic service. And if Cypress Mountain considers rescues too costly, it is within its rights to decline to participate.

The mother of a Port Coquitlam teen who committed suicide after online bullying and stalking from a cyber-predator says adults need to be just as careful as kids online. Carol Todd, the mother of Amanda Todd, and her supporters are outing fake Facebook and Twitter profiles that are pretending to be Carol Todd and seeking sympathy, condolences — and perhaps even money — from strangers. “The message out there is that people need to be more cautious when they are on social media,” said Todd, who spent part of the Christmas holiday dealing with the fake social media postings, including a Facebook profile in which a person claiming to be Amanda’s mother posted pictures of Amanda and complained that others were impersonating her. In one screen grab, the fake Facebook profile read: “People are still going off that in (sic) not really Amanda’s mother and it breaks my heart to hear that because I raised Amanda, and I love her so much more than anything...” And while that profile came down Monday night, Todd say she’s not sure if it was removed by Facebook or by the person who created it because she hasn’t been contacted, although she received an automated message in response to her complaint. She’s also concerned about a Twitter account with 198 followers that seems to have gone dormant since Oct. 28 but is still accessible. It features photos of Carol and Amanda and promised to set up a website soon, and Todd is worried that individuals might be trying to use worldwide concern over the Amanda Todd story for personal gain. In the turmoil after Todd’s death Oct. 10, a Facebook account was set up by someone claiming to be Carol Todd who was collecting “donations” because she was going to quit her job, and Todd

• Grow-A-Reader pre-natal storytime: Remember all those stories, rhymes and songs you loved as a child? Terry Fox Library presents its popular pre-natal storytime series. Connect with others and experience the fun of learning a selection of the best rhymes, songs and stories to use in play with new babies. Research shows that there is an amazing connection between baby brain development and the role of books, the sound of nursery rhymes and the power of songs. Furthermore, parents play a vital role in their child’s development when they read and play with their babies. Participants will meet other parents with babies on the way on the fourth Saturday of each month from January through April, 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.

For more information, visit www.fvrl.bc.ca or the Fraser Valley Regional Library Facebook page. Terry Fox Library is located 2470 Mary Hill Rd. in PoCo. Phone 604-927-7999.

New patients only

Jane can help with such problems as:

• Arthritis • Shingles • Deafness • Allergies • Infections • Backaches • Rheumatism • Over-weight • Sciatica • Knee/Neck & Shoulder Pain • Migraines • Headaches • Hemorrhoids, Stroke, Facelift • Insomnia • Coughs & Quitting Smoking

See why 3 of Jane's patients believe in acupuncture:

• Lady Lily, 76 years old, came to this clinic complaining of ten years of Migraine headaches. She tried to get help from her family doctor and was given a medication for two pills a day and now had taken a total of ten pills. Acupuncture treatment was done on her over five visits and now her symptoms are gone and she feels no more migraine headaches. • Mr. Daniel, an eighty one year old gentleman, who is living in Coquitlam was suffering from an enlarged prostate gland. This is a general phenomenon with older men. He suffers from frequent visits to the bathroom, mostly at night, sometimes up to ten times a night. After three visits to this clinic together with Chinese herbal medicine, he felt the symptom had gone and he doesn’t have the urgency to visit the bathroom as often. • P. Chew, 88 years old, was having Sciatica. He could walk, stand up and sleep alright, but couldn’t sit. If he did - the unbearable pain would almost paralyze him. He was given drugs, but after taking them a few times he decided to stop & come to me. Now he is free from the problem & lives happily. BC MEDICAL COVERAGE AVAILABLE

ith the New Year here, many of you will commit to making resolutions to improve your life on some level, often involving your health. As you contemplate what you need to do for 2013 to better your health — whether it’s to lose weight or just be healthier — you can turn your resolution into a real solution by making the choice to adopt a permanent lifestyle change for the better. As part of your plan for better health, I’m sure many of you are considering modifying your diet. Whether your goal is to shed some pounds or to just improve overall health for you and your family, the following is some sound, evidencebased advice for your top four action items to get the most benefit from your diet. When you make the decision to change

that are bad for you — all baked goods, pastries, candy, crackers, chips and the typical junk foods. Here are a few examples of how to replace a typical processed food item with a whole food: • Replace pasta with a whole grain such as brown rice, wild rice, quinoa or buckwheat. • Swap your cold

morning cereal with a whole grain like oldfashioned oats, steel cut oats or millet. • In place of a sandwich for lunch, make a healthy mixed-green salad with chickpeas, walnuts and your own dressing of balsamic vinegar, rosemary, olive oil and lemon. • For a snack, bake yam fries (slice yam, co-

conut oil, sea salt) instead of eating a bag of chips.

DRINK WATER

When I tell patients how much water they should drink a day — 2 to 3 l, filtered — I’m often faced with the following response:“But if I drink that much water, I’ll have to pee all the time!” see DRINK WATER, page 20

something — whatever it is — commit yourself to three weeks, as research shows it takes 21 days to establish a new habit.

EAT WHOLE

Fact:“Whole wheat bread”or“whole grain bread”does not constitute a whole food. What exactly is meant by whole foods? The concept applies to foods that appear on your plate

much like they did when they were grown and pulled from the Earth — before they undergo any processing. Whole foods retain all the nutrients and enzymes for consumption the way nature intended. When you adopt a whole foods approach to diet, food is more easily digested (producing less gas, bloating and indigestion) and nutrients

Sign Me Up 2013! Drink water, eat organic fruits and veggies, and avoid sugar, says Gurm continued from page 19

That’s the point.Your body is made up of 60% to 70% water. Cells cannot produce oxygen or energy if water is not available to drive these reactions forward. The result? Fatigue, muscle weakness, joint aches, irritability, lack of mental clarity and a slew of other symptoms that occur from the build of toxins that ensues from dehydration — damaging every cell and vital organ in your body, including your brain and kidneys. There are many solutions to staying hydrated through the day.You can drink straight water or caffeine-free herbal teas to get meet your daily hydration quota. Try adding lemon, lime or fresh fruits to your water to get some flavour. If you drink coffee or caffeinated teas, be sure to replenish the water lost from these diuretics. As a general rule, for every cup of caffeine you consume, you’ve got to drink an extra cup of water (in addition to your two to three litres) to balance your hydration.

EAT ORGANIC

Fact: Organically grown, unmodified food is not the same as conventionally grown food. There is no doubt organic fruits and vegetables have a higher nutrient content, vitamins and minerals than their conventional counterpart. In addition to having higher levels of vitamins, minerals (such as vitamin C, iron, magnesium, phosphorus) and antioxidant phytonutrients, organic foods also contain far less toxic chemicals. If that’s not enough reason to choose organic, perhaps the future of our environment is. It is undisputed that organic farming methods are better for our planet. Support a healthier environment by choosing to purchase organic foods.

AVOID SUGARS

Fact: Eating“sugarfree”foods and beverages that contain artificial sweeteners is not healthy or healthier than consuming the real thing. Please stop using artificial sweeteners like Splenda, aspartame, NutraSweet and Equal. Aspartame has neuro-

toxic effects. If you need to use low-calorie sweeteners, xylitol is a safe, natural sugar substitute and studies have demonstrated that it actually helps prevents dental cavities and tooth decay. Type 2 diabetes and insulin resistance (a condition that precedes diabetes), mainly develops from consuming a diet high in carbohydrates and other high-glycemic foods. Glycemic impact refers to the effect of a given food or meal on your blood-glucose (sugar) level. The more elevation of blood-glucose induced by a food, the higher it’s glycemic impact. Eating low-glycemic means avoiding foods that are high-to-moderate in glycemic index, including sugars, bananas, grapes, dried fruits, alcohol and refined carbohydrates. It also requires that every meal consist of proper balance of macronutrients, meeting the following criteria:

protein, healthy fat, complex carbohydrate and fibre. Other guidelines to having glycemic balance with diet include: • eat small portions; • consume three main meals and two snacks daily; • do not go longer than three hours without food; • consume three to four servings of vegetables daily. While it’s true that following a diet like this takes more thought and meal preparation, like anything, it takes 21 days to make a new habit and 21 days to break an old one. The first three to five days are the most difficult. Sure, you will mourn the loss of your bad eating habits at first but soon you’ll get past that hump and realize you’ve never felt better. Trust me, you won’t even think about going back to your old ways. What better way to start the NewYear?

Loving the life in the Lower Mainland By Kerry Vital

Metro Vancouver is widely known as one of the best places in the world to live in. Leisure and recreation is right on our doorstep, our economy is thriving, we have a lively arts and cultural scene, and new residents move here in droves. But what exactly makes the Lower Mainland such a wonderful place to live? “I think people love living in the Lower Mainland because of the excellent work-life balance,” says Bob de Wit, CEO of the Greater Vancouver Home Builders’ Association. “There aren’t many places where someone can ski and golf in the same day in the same city!” Michael Hungerford, a partner at Hungerford Properties, agrees, saying that Metro Vancouver has it all. “There’s a tremendous quality of life here,” he says, adding “People recognize the stability that the Lower Mainland has. It’s a great city to work in and have fun.” Hungerford himself lived outside of the Lower Mainland for 10 years, but kept coming back to Vancouver. “There are studies that speak to the Lower Mainland as one of the best places to live in the world,” he says. “People want to raise their kids here. They recognize the stability that the Lower Mainland has.” Indeed, Vancouver was rated as the fifth best city in the world on the Mercer Quality of Living survey, the results of which were released in early December. A similar study by the

A thriving economy and a great quality of life intelligent bunch, according to a study by draw new residents every year. Smartcities Hub. The study rated Vancouver as the fourth smartest city in the world. Our relatively temperate climate is also a draw for people considering where to live. With warm summer days and cool fall nights, it’s rare for citizens of Metro Vancouver to experience major weather-related problems, unless of course you’re yearning for the white Christmas that doesn’t happen very often. “I think people are drawn first to Canada – because of our relatively greater political and economic freedoms – and then once they’re here, to the Lower Mainland, probably due to our having the best climate in the country,” says de Wit. Another wonderful thing about the Lower Mainland is the options for business owners here. “You can really create your own opportunities,” Hungerford says. It’s no wonder Metro Vancouver’s population grows every year, when there are so many great reasons to live here.

Healthy Lifestyles

2013

For the last six months, Tri-City News reporters Sarah Payne and Janis Warren have been writing about programs GET FIT and services available at the Port Moody recreation complex as well as their own accomplishments as part of a weight-loss/get fit campaign. On this page and the next are their final instalments in their series of articles...

40 & fitter: A healthy new path for reporter Warren Hard work at the rec centre yields energy and results By Janis Warren The Tri-CiTy News

S

omething that I didn’t expect happened at 40. Rather than dread the milestone year, much like I did when I turned 30, I decided to make 2012 positive and fulfilling and embrace the age instead of denying it. I bought art. I renovated the kitchen. I grew my hair out. And I took a look at my figure, a body that had been idle for far too long. In June, I was fortunate enough to be offered a six-month membership pass to the Port Moody recreation complex, which quickly became a second home to me and my family. While my pre-school-

ers played soccer at night, I lifted weights, cycled and ran on the Arc Trainer in the workout room. Twice a week, I was in the spinning room with Leisha and Lisa, and, on weekends, I rolled out the yoga mat. Every month, I would check in with the personal trainer assigned to me, Lori Periana, a mom of two grown children who had gone through the same weight battles as me years earlier. Her sunny disposition always brought a ray of light to my day. At first, I emailed her on Fridays, explaining how I had tried to get to the gym that week, what I had eaten and how I was trying to improve. Her words were generally the same: Add more veggies, remove starchy carbs, eat five times a day and keep up the cardio. After my first fitness story was published in

. . . RY

July — featuring Lori’s picture — I posted the newspaper article to my fridge for motivation. And every time I passed it, I could hear her encouragement in my head. But the next two months, I hit a wall. I had a lower back strain. The nutritionist, Cindy Gauthier, also said the start of any exercise routine can be a challenge, with many toxins leaving the body. Still, I soldiered on, hoping for the magic light to switch back on. It did in early October, when I began to see results. Though I was not losing pounds, I shed a couple of inches and my clothes fit better. My skin became almost translucent and my hair shone. I was healthy and happy and, best of all, I had more energy than I’d had in years, which in turn benefitted my work and my family. Every day, I longed to

exercise, to stretch my hips — back-to-back pregnancies take their toll — and to clear my mind from the stresses of life. It showed when I couldn’t squeeze in an hour. My hubby would sense the frustration and recommend I take a “time out”at least in our condo’s amenities room or, after the kids got to sleep, pop in a postnatal exercise video from celebrity trainer Tracy Anderson — a series I have yet to get through in a single session. Today, I look back over the past six months and I can be proud. I realize after 20-plus years of doing nothing for my health, it will be years before I will get into the shape that I’ve always had of myself in my mind. And for that, I have Lori to thank for setting me on my new path.

t has been a tough six months since my colleague Janis Warren and I launched our fitness program at the Port Moody recreation complex, filled with days of sore, aching muscles — but plenty of rewards. To help assess whether I met my fitness goals, I looked back at our introduction to this series and had to smile. Those first few weeks were beyond tough and my personal trainer, Kari Werner, was good-natured but (very) firm when it came to completing the programs she’d planned for me. I often (not so silently) objected to what she was asking me to do but, somehow, after a few visits to the gym, I was actually doing it. Many times, I surprised myself by following her suggestions to make the exercises tougher, a feat that never failed to make me flush with pride. Heck, I can even polish off more than a few push-ups, though I can promise you I won’t like it.

THE EVALUATION

In the evaluation we filled out prior to embarking on this fitness mission, I declared that I wanted to rid myself of the extra pounds still lurking 18 months after the birth of my first baby. I said something vague about wanting to get back in shape and how I hadn’t really felt“fit”for a few years. There was even a mention of that elusive dream, wearing the pre-baby jeans. And I looked forward to going from an almost

Tri-City News reporter Sarah Payne on the Arc Trainer in the workout room at the Port Moody recreation complex, where she has been exercising for the last six months.

IN QUOTES

“There were stretches when everything went smoothly and I succeeded in getting to the gym several times a week, and some definite blips (like moving homes) that derailed my efforts and were difficult to recover from.” Sarah Payne complete lack of exercise to ideally hitting the gym up to four days a week, acknowledging that scheduling would likely be my biggest obstacle. Six months later, my predictions about the difficulty of scheduling workouts into busy days while juggling work and family proved true. There were stretches when everything went smoothly and I succeeded in getting to the gym several

times a week, and some definite blips (like moving homes) that derailed my efforts and were difficult to recover from. But what of those premom jeans?

THE ASSESSMENT

At my first meeting with the trainer, I sheepishly allowed Werner to do the necessary measurements (and did my best not to listen to the results) for the inevitable

post-regime comparisons. But a few months into our training sessions, I was feeling the effects of all that exercise. I felt stronger, I had more energy and I was sleeping better. My clothes fit differently — in a good way, for a change. I often dragged my feet to the gym but never failed to feel happier, less stressed and refreshed by the time I headed home after a workout. Perhaps the highlight of the past six months came in late September, when Werner said something that sounded like it came from heaven itself: She said I was noticeably slimmer, and suggested I try on those old jeans. And with that, all those lunges and squats — even the push-ups — were instantly forgiven.

Habkirk takes early lead at Jr’s Team Habkirk tied for first heading into weekend draws By Gary McKenna THe Tri-CiTy News

Coquitlam’s Team Habkirk was undefeated going into Friday’s draws at the Junior Men’s Provincial Championships Thursday morning, after racking up three early victories in the tournament.

The team’s place in the standings puts them in a tie for first place with Team Klymchuk, made up of players from the Langley/Victoria Curling Club. Habkirk, which is skipped by Kyle Habkirk, with Nicholas Umbach as the third, Ryan Harbrink as the second and Kento Sato as the lead, defeated Team de Jong 9-8 of Victoria in the opening draw. In the second draw, Habkirk’s squad downed Team Tardi 9-6, a

club that currently sits in third place in the tournament. On Thursday morning, the last draw before The Tri-City News’ deadline, Team Habkirk managed a 10-8 win over Team Emslie of Kelowna. The Coquitlam team was expected to take on Team Cliff in the sixth draw Thursday night. Team Jensen, made up of skip Shawna Jensen, third Sarah Daniels, second Katie Sim and lead Megan Daniels, was locked in a tie for first place with Team Van

Osch on the women’s side. Van Osch had an early victory over Team Brown and Team Edwards and were expected to play Team Prinse Thursday afternoon in the fifth draw. Playoffs are expected to begin in the 12th draw on Saturday, with the semifinals finishing up on Sunday and the championship draw taking place Sunday night. H e r i t a g e Wo o d s Kodiaks volleyball player Alessandra Gentile may still be in Grade 12, but she is already making waves in the Canadian Interuniversity Sports circuit. The Grade 12 Port Moody athlete, who is expected to play for the five-time champions the UBC Thunderbirds after she graduates from high school next year, was unanimously chosen by CIS coaches as the 2012 player of the year. The award is the most recent honour in the Gentile’s young athletic career. In 2011 she took home a gold medal while playing with Team BC in the Western Canadian Summer Games and another first-place finish in the Grade 11 High School Beach Volleyball doubles provincial championship. Most recently, she led the Kodiaks’ senior volleyball team to a second place finish at the provincials, after taking second place in the Fraser Valley championship. She earned a first-team all-star at the B.C. tournament and another all-star the Fraser Valley playdowns. Volleyball is not the only sport where Gentile has had success. She achieved her personal best of 1.55 m in high jump and placed fourth overall at the B.C. senior women’s high jump as a Grade 11 athlete.

Express look to get back to winning ways By Gary McKenna The Tri-CiTy News

The Coquitlam Express is hoping that a quick road trip is just what the team needs to get back on the winning track. The club has not put a checkmark in the victory column since Dec. 15, following a 3-2 overtime victory against Powell River, and a 3-6 in the month of December. But the Express have their work cut out for them if they hope to pickup a victory this weekend. Tonight (Friday, Jan.

4) Coquitlam takes on the Chiiliwack Chiefs at the Prospera Centre, a team that currently sits at the top of the B.C. Hockey League’s Mainland Division. Behind the Chiefs is the Surrey Eagles, a club the Express will play on Wednesday. The Express will return the Poirier Sports and Leisure Complex next weekend for the start of a three game home stand that will see Merritt take the ice on Jan. 11, Prince George play on Jan. 12 before a visit from the Langley Rivermen on Jan. 18. sports@tricitynews.com

The Tri-City female midget A team took home the gold medal at the Angels on Ice tournament in Langley last week.

Preds no Angels at Langley tourney The Tri-City Predators avenged their only loss of the Angels on Ice tournament last week in dramatic fashion: by defeating Washington 4-1 in the female midget A championship game. Washington had dealt the Preds a blow in round-robin play the day before, when the Tri-City club lost 6-4, the team’s only loss of the tournament. But the Preds came out strong in the final game, with Nicole Vukasovic opening up the scoring in the first period, followed by another goal from Megan Bradford. Washington managed to notch a goal of their own in the second to cut the Tri-City’s lead in half, but the Preds answered back with a power play goal to pad the lead. Vukasovic completed the hat trick in the third period on a breakaway goal, sealing the win for the Tri-City squad.

POCO PIRATES

The trophy case at the Port Coquitlam Recreation Complex will get a little more crowded this week.

The Port Coquitlam Pirates went undefeated on their way to winning a championship banner at the 54th annual Chilliwack Peewee Jamboree gold division tournament last week. Austin Wahl was named MVP in the final game, after netting a goal in the first period to help PoCo to a 2-1 victory over the hosting Chilliwack team. Jake Loverock scored the other goal for the Pirates, assisted by Matteo Gagno and Nikita Morozov. Goaltender Chase Law held the opposition to just one goal in the game. Port Coquitlam got off to a strong start in round-robin play, tying 2-2 against Peninsula and defeating Surrey 4-2 in the early part of the tournament. In the third game, the Pirates defeated Tri-City rivals the Coquitlam Chiefs 4-3 in a tightly played matchup. PoCo continued to rack up victories heading into the elimination round. The Pirates defeated NSWC 6-1 before dropping Peninsula 4-3 in the semifinals.
