Un der the City’s Good Neighbour Bylaw, residents must remove snow and ice from sidewalks and footpaths bordering their house not later than 12:00 noon the day following the snowfall. Please voluntarily keep the sidewalks and footpaths next to your property clear, so others may safely use them. Failing to comply with the City’s bylaw may result in a fine of $150. All attempts will be made to collect curbside recyclables, compostables and garbage during inclement weather. COUNCIL BRIEF Highlights from Abbotsford City Council Meeting

The City of Abbotsford, which takes a pro-active approach to snow and ice control, operates three anti-icing units (tanks containing sodium chloride solution) on four-lane roads and rural priority roads. The units are used to spray road surfaces before and during a storm. Anti-icing helps keep roads ice free and improves snow removal. Several pre-wetting units, which inject liquid sodium chloride into the salt/sand mixture before it is applied to roads, are also used by the City. These units increase the melting of snow and ice, and reduce the loss of salt/sand caused by traffic. The City does not remove snow and ice to bare pavement conditions. The public is encouraged to use caution, and wherever possible, park vehicles off the streets. Abandoned vehicles or vehicles obstructing roadways will be towed without notice to allow for snow clearing operations to continue and towing costs will be the responsibility of the vehicle owners. We ask that you do not plow snow from private properties onto the public roadways as this can result in visibility hazards and obstructions and will require additional time for clearing roadways.

Tree pick-up and bottle drive

The First Abbotsford Scouts are holding a bottle drive and Christmas tree pick-up on Saturday, Jan. 5 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. They will be in west and central Abbotsford during those times, going door to door. Christmas tree pick-up can be pre-booked for that day, although it is not required,

by calling 604-309-4850 and leaving your name, phone number and address. All trees must be stripped of ornaments, tinsel and garland. The scouts take the trees for mulching, and then use the mulch throughout the year on such projects as trail rebuilding.

Bartender Roberta Poulton came to know Greg and Marion Parkyn 11 years ago, when she first started slinging drinks at Gators Pub, part of the Fraser Valley Inn in Abbotsford’s downtown core. They became friends who sometimes socialized. Roberta always thought the Parkyns were good people with kind hearts. Two days before Christmas, the Parkyns stopped by Gators to pass on their season’s greetings. They talked about how excited they were to spend Christmas Day with their grandkids – a boy, age 4, and his sister, 7. Later that night, Roberta received a grim phone call from the Parkyns. The couple had returned to their McMillan area home at about 6 p.m., after visiting friends and family, to discover their place had been ransacked. Their Christmas tree was toppled, and all the presents beneath it had been

same. One of them posted the plight on Facebook. The next morning, on her way to work, Roberta dropped by the Parkyns’ home. “Don’t worry about it. We’ll have Christmas for you,” she told them. All that day at Gators, customers and friends dropped off new toys for the kids – Barbies and bead sets for the girl, and Hot Wheels sets and Play-Doh for the boy. “All right, everybody! Load up my truck!” Roberta declared at the end of her Christmas Eve shift. Greg and Marion were flabbergasted when Roberta pulled up to their home. There were more than enough toys to replace what the Grinch had stolen, as well as $350 in cash. The couple were amazed at what had been accomplished in just one day and ecstatic that their grandkids wouldn’t have to know that such nastiness existed in the world. Mostly, they were thankful to have such amazing friends.

I was one of the “civilians” that pitched in since Dec. 2 till the end, and I just want to thank Walter who provided a huge plate of homemade cookies and several containers (two litre containers each) of Tim Horton’s coffee every day for that duration. He was one of the neighbours. And also Phyllis, another neighbor, who provided a large portion of homemade soup and buns more than several times, enough to feed us all. On Point We’ve gone through a year of significant change at city hall. New mayor, new councillor, and now, a new city manager. Let the changes continue. Mayor Bruce Banman has shown some promise. So has Coun. Henry Braun. Both were skeptical of the critical water need which was the mantra of the previous administration. It seems they were on the mark. Conservation measures and slowing growth has put the requirement for a new water source much further down the road than previously predicted. Now we need to see some fresh research into viable options that won’t cost an immense fortune, but will prepare the community for future growth. For Abbotsford, it’s all about the money... Putting aside the timing of this and the YMCA proposal, is this information really necessary? And if it is, does city hall not have enough people on its payroll to phone 300 people over a few weeks, and ask some questions? Collectively, it’s this sort of stuff that has created taxpayer angst and distrust over the past several years. Banman and company have their work cut out for them in 2013.

A healthy community grows through a strong bond between each generation it produces. At Eugene Reimer Middle School, the fruit of theses efforts will be sown in a new community garden. The school, thanks to a $17,500 grant from the UBCM Community Connections program, will continue to build on its initiative to use the school as a place where not only students and teachers gather, but where neighbours can come to unite. The school, located at 3433 Firhill Drive, started the process in the fall of 2011 when it converted an unused classroom into the Eugene Reimer Community Hub room. Complete with couches, tables and chairs, the area now serves as a multipurpose room that

Gabriel said they have also been in contact with the Abbotsford Community Garden Society to help plan out the new plot. Come construction time, they are hoping more members of the community can donate their time and energy in getting the project growing. Simran Mann, a Grade 8 student at Eugene Reimer, said she’s appreciative of everyone’s work creating the hub and garden. “It’s great to be able to bring the whole community together that feels safe, where we don’t have to worry, “ said Mann. “It will be a chance to get to know the people around here better.” Under the Neighbourhood Learning Centres initiative, the province has set an expectation that schools use their existing space to accommodate a wider range of services for students, families and the community to maximize the public benefits of school facilities. The province introduced the $10-million School Community Connections program in 2005, providing grants to assist in transforming school facilities into lively hubs for community activities and services.

The Tonns heard from them that the orphanage in Entebbe, built and run by the African Children’s Choir, was in need of stucco and paint, so the Tonns raised money through Gord’s business, The Wet Paint Company, and by putting up Christmas decorations in their

neighbourhood in exchange for donations. They pay for the supplies, and all the labour done at the orphanage. Gord said he is trying to help give the children a future. “We think it’s a small thing, but really to them, it’s the world.” He said if poverty in Uganda is going to change, it will be through the children. “You have to do it one child at a time. You can’t reach them all, but you have to start somewhere.”

Flying to Uganda to paint an orphanage might not seem like a typical way to spend a December, but that’s just what Gord Tonn did. He has spent the last three years going to Entebbe, Uganda to renovate a school for orphans, and in December he and his crew applied the final coat of paint. Tonn and his wife, Debbie, got a passion for mission work when they were the leaders of the African Children’s Choir. The choir is made up of orphans, aged seven to 11, and they tour the world to raise money to build and sustain orphanages across Africa. When the Tonns were approached to direct the group, they saw a chance to fulfil a mutual goal. “We felt this was something we wanted to do before we started a family,” Debbie said. They toured with the group in 1994 and 1995, and then the Tonns fell out of touch with the children – until their former sing-

Arts council presents Feathered exhibit The Abbotsford Arts Council is presenting its latest show called Feathered, Works in Mixed Media by Ellen Sereda. The exhibition takes place at the Kariton Art Gallery, located in Mill Lake Park at 2387 Ware St. This is the first show of 2013 and features highly detailed paintings and drawings of birds depicted in isolation or abstract, subtly surreal environments. “I realized after observing and studying birds and other animals, I find it difficult to romanticize wildlife and create conventional wildlife paintings,” said Sereda. When Fairfax Lions head coach Harvey Kitani reflects on his Los Angeles program’s 2011 trip to the Snowball Classic at Abbotsford Senior Secondary, basketball isn’t necessarily the first thing that springs to mind. “Our first night there, we went up Grouse Mountain,” Kitani recalled. “For many of our kids, that was the first time they’d ever seen snow. “It was our first time ever going to Canada, and the total experience was something invaluable to our students. In that short time, we built a rapport with the Abbotsford school, and we thought it would be neat to have a chance to go back.” Kitani’s Lions, who managed to win the 2011 Snowball title between field trips to take in some Canadian culture, will reprise their role as headliners when the 53rd annual edition of the local tour-

HARTL, Rudolf Edward After the recent loss of his beloved wife, Beatrice, with whom he shared 61 years of marriage, and a short struggle with Lung Cancer, Rudolf Edward Hartl, known as â€œGusâ€? Hartl, passed away peacefully at McKenney Creek Hospice Residence in Maple Ridge, on December 21st, 2012. Gus was born on a farm in Saskatchewan on October 10th, 1929. After a 25 year RCMP career, during which he also maintained a small grain farm in Saskatchewan, he retired at the age of 46, to a 10 acre hobby farm in Aldergrove. Utilizing his RCMP experience, Gus then worked with the Probation Services and helped establish a community work program in the Fraser Valley for young offenders, to perform community services, rather than being incarcerated or on probation. Following that project, Gus initiated and completed residential real estate developments in Aldergrove, Abbotsford and Mission. He spent the winter months each year at his Arizona home for the past 25 years, and made many friends there from across Canada and the USA. Gus was the most sociable person youâ€™d ever meet, and relationships with family and friends were always the most important priorities in his life. He is lovingly remembered by sons Philip (Linda), Doug (Poona), Bob (Pat), Dennis, and Gus (Brenda); grandchildren Trevor Hartl (Amanda), Jennifer Bajic (Ante), Douglas Hartl (Christina), Navada Taylor (Stephen), Janelle Hartl (Andrew), Jared Hartl, Serena Hartl (James), Whitney Pollock (Justin), Jessica German (Brad), and Meagan Hartl; great grandchildren Luka, Spencer, Ben, Cate, Taylin, Olivia, Hudson, and Quinn; sisters Elsie Smith, Edna Hornett (Jim), Bertha Kenny (Al); as well as many loving nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
