THE TRI-CITY NEWS
f you go down to the Kingsway Campus of Northside Church tonight at 9 p.m., you might see a different kind of service then one you would normally associate with a church during the holiday season. Yes, there might be Christmas music. But the service won’t be the kind where hymns are sung and the Good Book is read. The Christmas Eve service is the kind when one person serves another, the kind of service that is life-changing, that makes a difference, when a conversation starts and someone starts a journey. This is the story of a few of those who serve.
CHRIS
On the days that volunteer Chris Kimberley works the 5:30 a.m. shift cleaning mats, serving breakfast and handing out bag lunches with half a dozen other volunteers at PoCo’s temporary Bridge Shelter, he wonders about the 20 to 25 women and men who spent the night on the sanctuary floor and what they’ll do with their day once they leave at 7 a.m. Will they head back to tents stashed in the woods along the Coquitlam River? Begin bottle runs for cash. Or go to work. It’s hard to know, but he wonders. “The hardest thing is when you know it’s freezing,”Kimberley says, acknowledging that the damp cold and freezing rain can make outdoor living miserable. Such living is hard, he says — he knows he
DIANE STRANDBERG/THE TRI-CITY NEWS
Left: Michele Ames, the volunteer co-ordinator for Calvary Baptist Church in Coquitlam, and her children who help out with the Bridge Shelter: Aidan 15, Shad, 13, and Elizabeth, 12. Right: Chris Kimberley, a Bridge Shelter volunteer, and Andrea Corrigan, volunteer co-ordinator, at the Port Coquitlam campus of Northside Church, where up to two dozen people sleep each night.
BY THE NUMBERS
Number of individuals who have used the Bridge Shelter since October: 85 Number of volunteers to organize food, mats and clean up at Bridge Shelter this winter: 800 to 900 Number of people who have found housing by coming to the Bridge Shelter in 2012: 56 couldn’t do it. When faced with homelessness after being evicted last spring, he called Resurrection House and was accepted into the addiction recovery program. It saved his bacon, he says.
ANDREA
Andrea Corrigan says she has the best job in the world. You could say, the job was meant for her. Corrigan used to volunteer with the temporary homeless shelter when Hope for Freedom Society (HFFS) started the program with funding from the federal government, tepid support from the community, and
cautious approval from the Tri-Cities’ three city councils At the time, six years ago, Corrigan was a volunteer for the mat program at St. Andrews United Church in Port Moody. Now, she has a criminology degree and her volunteer work has turned into a paying job at the Bridge Shelter, where she works as an HFFS employee. She oversees the volunteer effort to feed, clothe and shelter the dozens of men and women who will use the shelter between now and March, when the program ends for the season. She will see between 800 and 900 volunteers
walk through the doors at the church, armed with food, clothing and goodwill. Her job is to keep an eye on things,“just to make sure everything runs smoothly.”But it’s the volunteers who do the heavy lifting. Here’s a partial list of those who have helped out with the shelter so far this winter: Pathfinders, Rangers and Hope Lutheran School; St. Andrews, Calvary Baptist and Northside churches; a cashier from No Frills; two SFU students; 22 kids from Dr. Charles Best secondary. Here’s what they did in November: Laid out and put away 572 mats; made and distributed 1,700 meals. “The volunteers do an awesome job — grocery shopping, arranging for donations, bringing the donations down…” Corrigan lists the number of tasks that have to be done and marvels that
the number of volunteers hasn’t dropped off since the shelter moved to PoCo. Each night, the mats have to be set up and each morning they are taken down and the place made spotless — all work done by volunteers. They all seem to show up, often not knowing what to expect, and when they leave, they’re ready to sign up for another shift.
CHRIS
Kimberley is one of those people who showed up at the shelter to volunteer and didn’t leave. “I find I get to know the people coming in,”he says, and often, he makes a connection that can turn into friendship. At least one couple he has met has moved into permanent housing while others have signed on to recovery programs at Hope for Freedom’s Resurrection House. In fact, two couples who were previously homeless
are now housed, according to HFFS statistics. They are among the 56 who moved from the streets to permanent housing in just one year because of the connections they made at the shelter. “These are the rewards,” he says.“To see someone turn their life around makes it all worthwhile.”
JULIE
In November, when Julie Chuter was coordinating volunteers for St. Andrews, she saw one man undergo a transformation after eating three meals a day for a few weeks and spending his nights warm and dry in the shelter. “He was skin and bones, there was nothing to him,”she says. But as the days turned into weeks, the man grew healthy and strong. He joked he could balance a coffee cup on his stomach. Chuter has three kids, two at home, and a full-
time job but she wouldn’t give up her volunteer post. There are just too many benefits — to the community, to the volunteers and to the homeless, who appreciate the efforts made on their behalf. She recalls how one man whose life appeared to be in shambles said his bad luck couldn’t have been all that bad if it resulted in his meeting shelter volunteers. “We are blessed to be a blessing,”she says.
‘INDISPENSABLE’
In two years, when the permanent shelter opens at 3030 Gordon Ave. in Coquitlam, some of the work volunteers now do may be done by paid shelter workers (Rain City Housing Society has the contract to operate the shelter) but volunteers are likely to make important contributions. Now, though, they are indispensable.

Party in PoCo to kick off centennial

Port Coquitlam Mayor Greg Moore talks to Meghan Shewchuk, a Grade 12 student at Riverside secondary school, about her ideas for the mayor’s centennial hat.
Th e c i t y o f Po r t Coquitlam is wasting no time beginning its centennial celebrations in 2013. PoCo is holding a 100th birthday celebration kickoff on Jan. 4. Guests who attend a dinner and free ice skate at the PoCo rec complex are encouraged to dress in vintage clothing from throughout the city’s 100 years — evoking the 1920s flapper era, perhaps, or the 1970s’ disco explosion. The event will also feature a high-energy on-ice musical performance by the Timebenders and a community dinner, with plates of lasagna selling for $5 per person. Tickets for the 5 and 6

The free public skate gets underway at 6:30 p.m. in conjunction with the first of the Timebenders’ two 75-minute sets on the ice stage. Skate rentals will also be free that evening, although people who
own skates are encouraged to bring them. The Timebenders are described as a “musical romp through the ages” featuring music and impersonations of stars from the last 60 years. More than 20 costume changes take place during the set, which includes tunes from every era and genre. Setting it straight Re. Snow photos (page 3, The Tri-City News, Dec. 19). The caption under two photos in last Wednesday’s Tri-City News contained some incorrect information. Two of the children pictured were Tess and Morgan Perkins, and the man in one of the photos was Jason Young, who was misidentified as their father; in fact, he’s a family friend.

$432k to help kids on mental health
A local financial institution is helping to get youth to talk about mental health and substance abuse issues. Coast Capital Savings has donated $432,000 to Fraser Health to establish a website and education programs so young people in the TriCities and other communities can talk about mental health concerns and problems associated with substance abuse. The program, called BC Speak Up, is unique, according to Fraser Health, because it will engage youth with and without mental health and/or substance use issues through peer support, targeted education in schools and a new online community - SpeakUp@mindcheck. ca. The donation by Coast Capital is the largest corporate contribution to youth and young adult mental health programs ever received by Fraser Health, according to a press release. Designed as a youth working for youth initiative, Speak Up will encourage young people to feel more comfortable talking about these issues either in person or online. More information is available at mindcheck. ca/speakup. dstrandberg@tricitynews.com

Kiewit says it’s working on bridge snow solution Black Press
The contractor that built the new Port Mann Bridge said it’s working on a solution to the problem of ice and snow falling from the bridge’s cables onto vehicles below — but isn’t saying whether it accepts responsibility. Kiewit-Flatiron spokesperson Tom Jansenn said, in an emailed statement last Thursday, that the firm
is “very concerned” and working to find a solution as fast as possible. He would not say, however, if the contractor accepts cost responsibility. At a press conference earlier that day, B.C. Transportation Minister Mary Polak told reporters, “Yesterday’s events on the Port Mann Bridge were absolutely unacceptable.” And she and Mike Proudfoot, CEO of the Transportation Investment Corp. (TI Corp.) said it’s up
to Kiewit-Flatiron to come up with a solution — at no cost to taxpayers. “This design for the bridge contemplates measures for the accumulation of snow and ice,” Proudfoot said on Dec. 20. “Those haven’t been effective so the ball’s back in
the contractor’s court to come up with a proper solution.” Said Polak: “We will be looking to the contractor to provide us not only with a long-term, permanent solution that ensures this never, ever occurs again but, also, an immediate fix
to the problem so that the bridge is open and indeed safe for the travelling public.” Proudfoot also said drivers who travelled across the bridge between 10 and 6 p.m. Dec. 19 won’t be charged tolls and the company will cover

Celebration & tradition
PICTURE THIS adrian raeside
L
ast week’s snow and ice storms may have brought a white Christmas prematurely but they haven’t dampened the spirit of the season. This is the time of year for families and friends to gather and enjoy one another’s company. It’s a time for children’s eyes to alight with wonder and magic. It’s a time for parties, with much laughter and fellowship. It’s a celebration, both religious and secular. It’s also a time of year when many of us connect with our roots, whether by traveling to visit far-flung family or by blowing the dust off trinkets and traditions from generations past. That’s especially true in Canada, a nation of immigrants. For many, Christmas is an amalgam of Western traditions, such as turkey and colourful wrapped presents under a decorated tree, and their own cultural celebrations — a piñata hung from the ceiling, a feast of spicy sauces and flatbread, polished boots placed in the window awaiting gifts left in the night. Some don’t even celebrate Christmas. They gather a couple of weeks later according to the Julian calendar, or for the new year, or for Eid, the festive conclusion to Ramadan. In our ever-changing world, filled with so much uncertainty, it’s traditions that ground us, keep us connected to where we came from, who we are. They also weave the tapestry of our multicultural country. Celebrating the season and creating new traditions is part of the magic of Christmas. Here’s to a joyous one, however you celebrate. Merry Christmas! – The Burnaby NewsLeader (Black Press)
NDP leader Adrian Dix seeks balance with biz BC VIEWS Tom Fletcher VICTORIA DP leader Adrian Dix has completed year-end interviews with members of the legislative press gallery. Here are highlights from our discussion.
N
Tom Fletcher: On the Kinder Morgan oil pipeline expansion proposal, federal NDP leader Tom Mulcair says the federal environmental process would have to be strengthened before a project like that could get a thorough enough hearing. Do you agree? Adrian Dix: The BC Liberal government has signed an equivalency agreement that says that the federal decision is the provincial decision on these projects. If it applies to Enbridge Northern Gateway, presumably the BC Liberals would apply it to Kinder Morgan. They could have done a joint process, where [the final decision] would have gone to both cabinets. They chose instead to give up jurisdic-
tion. They were so afraid of making any decision on Northern Gateway that they sent it over to the federal government. So what we’ve said is within a week of coming to office, we would end that equivalency agreement and British Columbia would make decisions about both Enbridge Northern Gateway, which applied in May 2010, and any other pipeline, including the Kinder Morgan proposal, for which no application has been made. Obviously, it would have been desirable for everyone had they chosen a true joint review, as they have in Site C [dam proposed for Peace River], as they did with Kemess North [rejected mine expansion proposal] and other cases. Fletcher: You don’t want duplicated review processes here, you just want a provincial cabinet say in the decision? Dix: That’s right. Fletcher: On your relationship with the BC Federation of Labour, your caucus is considering a proposal that B.C. should once again do away with secret ballots for union certification.
TRI-CITY nEWS [CCAB AUDITED CIRCULATIon 53,469 (MARCH 2009)] 1405 Broadway St., Port Coquitlam, B.C. V3C 6L6 telephone: 604-525-6397 • fax: 604-944-0703
n
Dix: The BC Fed makes a case to the government on a series of issues on employment standards every year. Labour law, every year. WorkSafeBC, every year.Trades and training, every year. With respect to [accepting signed union cards for certification], it is a democratic process that the Newfoundland Conservative government just put into place a few months ago. So it’s a proposal from the labour movement and we’re looking at it. For most of B.C.’s modern history, since World War II, we’ve had that card-check system in place. The question would be whether [returning to that system] is a priority for this term in government. Fletcher: So those kinds of things will be made clear in your platform? Dix: Absolutely. Fletcher: You picked up some serious money from businesses at a fundraiser in October. Is that some kind of a record for the NDP? Dix: [Laughs.] It might be a record, I don’t know. I think the business fundraiser we did at the HotelVancouver netted $350,000.
I think what it reflects is, this year, I’ve had about 230 meetings with the business community. The purpose of it has been principally to build understanding, particularly on issues of skills training. With the priority I give to skills training, I think I’m much more attuned to their concerns than the government has been. Fletcher: I suppose that kind of success in fundraising might make it more difficult to follow through with your pledge to ban corporate and union donations. Dix: I don’t think so.The BC Liberal Party has a very high level of corporate donations as a percentage of its total. We’re overwhelmingly dependent on individual donations. We get support from unions but it’s not even close to what people would think. Fletcher: So you’ll campaign for that, as you have before? Dix: Yes.

Your One Stop Boxing Week One honest woman Shopping Experience! made bad day good The Editor, I wanted to say thank you to a woman I never met. I was going to the Royal Bank in Port Coquitlam this morning to use the instant teller. When I drove into the parking lot, my front right tire hit the curb, which was under the snow so I couldn’t see it. It damaged the rim and my tire blew out — an expense I could hardly afford at this time of year. While standing in almost ankle-deep slush in runners, I took out the jack then realized it wasn’t all there. This was becoming a very unlucky day. I called a friend and someone came to my rescue within minutes with their jack (by the way, thank you, Deb ). I stood in the slush and pouring sleet and changed my tire. I was soaked from

PoCo mayor wants a top hat with history Moore said when he learned of the mayors’ hat challenge, he figured he would grab one of his daughter’s hats and dress it up but then thought better of it and decided it should be a community project. Having students make it, he added, “would be the ultimate.” Moore said his vision of the hat is a big top hat adorned with items that symbolize the city’s 100 years — that the city is built around the railroad and was once a major port, and that it lives by its tag line, “By industry and commerce we prosper.” If all the suggestions are incorporated, this hat is bound to be a behemoth. There was the Mary Hill industrial park, a huge industrial space for a city of PoCo’s size, Moore said, and PoCo Building Supplies, a family-owned business that is one of the oldest in the city. The railway is a sure bet but Moore said the students may want to throw in the Traboulay PoCo Trail, since the 25-km path that encircles the city is a favourite among runners, cyclists, walkers and inline skaters.
Many themes will compete for space on centennial hat By Sarah Payne The Tri-CiTy News
K
elly Selden’s Grade 11/12 art class at Riverside secondary school is exploring Port Coquitlam’s history as students create a piece of 3D art in honour of the city’s centennial next year. The artwork has the whole class involved — everybody’s pitching in ideas and it will be up to work experience student Janet Truong to whittle them down and actually build the piece — as they create a hat that will be worn by PoCo Mayor Greg Moore at the city’s 100th birthday party on March 7, and at the Port Moody Wearable Art Awards on Feb. 16, when all three Tri-City mayors will compete in the hat challenge. Moore dropped by the art class on a recent Monday morning for a brainstorming session with students. “When I became mayor a few years ago, I never thought this would be part of my job but it is and that’s really cool,”he said.
“The other thing we can’t forget about is Terry Fox — talk about an international symbol,” Moore said. There were more suggestions — PoCo’s quaint downtown, the city’s crest, local salmon, the Kwikwetlem First Nation, re-usable materials and the Coast Meridian Overpass (the $132-million cost of which surprised the students) — leaving Truong a little overwhelmed but looking forward to the task of building the monumental hat. “I think it’s a once-ina-lifetime chance,” she said. “It’s a lot of ideas so the hard part will probably be narrowing it down” — not to mention finding the right materials to make sure the city’s entire 100 years don’t come crashing down on Moore’s head. “I have full faith in you guys and I don’t want to micro-manage,” Moore said. “If what PoCo represents to you is different than what it is to me... that’s spectacular.” But he did offer one warning: “I don’t know if it’s a competition [at the Wearable Art Awards] but if it is, I want to win,” Moore said with a wink. “I’m very competitive.”

READERS’ CHRISTMAS PHOTOS: Snow, lights, cookies and milk, and, of course, children
The Tri-City News asked readers to share their seasonal photos and they did. On this page is a selection of pictures (more will run over the holiday period). Clockwise starting above: n James Putnam snapped Shaughnessy Street in Port Coquitlam, complete with snow and Christmas lights strung overhead. n “Here is a photo of what Santa can expect from our kids when he visits this year,” wrote Anna Richter. “We made little gingerbread houses that rest on the side of a coffee mug (or in this case, a tall, cool glass of milk), some cookies and, of course, carrots for his hungry crew.” n Jessica Edwards sent this photo of her 11-month-old son, Sawyer, helping with decorating. n And Jane and Kyle Paddon submitted this photo of their very happy son, Aaron Quinn Paddon.

Try reading a sequel to your favourite classics A GOOD READ Barbara Buxton
Y
ou finish reading a favourite book with a happy sigh but then you begin to wonder, “What happened after that?” Several contemporary authors have taken on the challenge to answer that question about some of our favourite classics, both for adults and children. Many adults will remember reading The Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett. What happened to all the little girls left behind at Miss Minchin’s Select Academy after young Sara drove away with her new benefactor? Children’s author Hilary McKay has written a sequel called Wishing for Tomorrow, in which we discover how Ermengarde, Lottie, Lavinia and the others carry on in a changed (for the worse) school environment. Her enchanting story for eight- to 12-yearolds tells how these young ladies take responsibility to improve things for themselves. Then there is Jane Eyre’s hidden story. Adèle by Emma Tennant is both a prequel and a sequel to Jane Eyre. The story is told from the point of view of the young ward for whom Jane is hired as governess. From her arrival before to her return after Jane’s
marriage to Mr. Rochester, we see quite a different perspective on the plot and characters. Written for adults, this story offers a new explanation of the fire and the death of the mad woman in the attic. If you were a fan of The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame, William Horwood’s sequels are a must read. Follow the further adventures of your childhood friends Mole, Ratty,Toad and the others in the excellent sequels, The Willows in Winter, Toad Triumphant and The Willows and Beyond. The author manages to capture the tone of the originals and keeps you reading right to the end. Both adults and older children will enjoy these books. Maybe Treasure Island is a favourite and you wondered what happened to the crew when they all returned home. What about the men left behind on the island? Follow the trials
and exciting adventures of the son of Jim Hawkins and the daughter of Long John Silver in Silver: Return to Treasure Island by Andrew Motion as they sail back to the island to find the men and treasure left behind 20 years before. Enjoy more thrills and excitement in Rebecca’s Tale by Sally Beauman. Twenty years after the death of Daphne Du Maurier’s mysterious Rebecca, Colonel Julian, a family friend, receives an anonymous parcel in the mail. Suddenly the question of suicide or murder rears its ugly head and the story begins anew. For a more lighthearted read, pick up Laurie R. King’s Mary Russell series, beginning with The Beekeeper’s Apprentice. This series continues the adventures of a now semiretired Sherlock Holmes, who meets and marries a much younger, highly intelligent Mary Russell. Mary willingly helps him with his new cases, some of them in exotic and dangerous places around the world. Sequels to Jane Austen novels are a favourite topic these days. A number of excellent writers have taken on the task of extending the stories, doing their best to keep the author’s voice and feeling for the times. P.D. James, famous for her Adam Dalgliesh mysteries, has successfully followed Pride

and Prejudice with Death Comes to Pemberley. Joan Aiken has written excellent sequels to several of Austen books, as have Emma Tennant and many others. Carrie Bebris even has Elizabeth Darcy as the heroine of a mystery series.
Finally, for pure charm and nostalgia, read the new sequel to Beatrix Potter’s The Tale of Peter Rabbit. In The Further Tale of Peter Rabbit, picture book author Emma Thompson has managed to get Peter into more
trouble as his temptation for good food leads him far from home. The watercolour illustrations by Eleanor Taylor are reminiscent of Potter’s original paintings, with similar attention to the detail of the countryside and a rec-
ognizable Peter. Children who love the original Potter stories will be enchanted by this one too. These and more intriguing titles can be found at your local public library. A Good Read is a column by Tri-City librarians.

oes will be tapping and hips w i l l sway i n g f o r t wo s h o w s at Coquitlam’s Evergreen Cultural Centre on New Year’s Eve. The Dec. 31 events both start at 8 p.m., with the Coquitlam-based Quiring Chamber Players in the theatre to launch their fifth annual new year’s concert. For this year’s recital, husband-and-wife team Reg Quiring (viola) and Rosemary O’Connor (piano) have invited the dynamic gypsy jazz string quartet od Van Django to usher in 2013 with an eclectic mix of music — stretching from the Classical era of the late 1700s to the swinging sounds of the 1930s. Quiring and O’Connor will kick off the evening with Brahms’ Hungarian Dances Nos. 1 and 3, and Tchaikovsky’s Melodie and Waltz Sentimentale. Next up is Van Django — aka Cameron Wilson (violin), Budge Schachte (guitar),
Finn Manniche (guitar and cello) and Brent Gubbles (acoustic bass) — which will entertain with a set made up of standard gypsy swing tunes as well as original tracks, primarily from their second CD, Waltz in the Shape of a Tree, that was released in April. After the intermission, Quiring, O’Connor, Wilson and Manniche will take to the stage for a rendition of Mozart’s Quartet in E-flat major. Van Django will have a second set before Quiring and O’Connor join the group for Wilson’s arrangement of Black and Tan Fantasy, a Duke Ellington classic. Wilson, who used to work for a decade with Quiring at the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, said though the program may be varied, “there’s a lot of crossover with the genres... It will be a very energetic show. People will be tapping their toes to the Classical section as well as to the gypsy jazz.” The Quiring New Year shows have become something of a tradition for many Tri-City music lovers “with many residents coming every year,” O’Connor said. “It’s nice to see

Centennial secondary has even incorporated the sport into its physical education curriculum and more people are registering with the junior program every year. “Curling is really picking up, she said. “We have been really focusing on our junior program and our coaches have been doing a marvelous job training.” The Habkirk crew will not be the only local curlers in the tournament. Wheeler, McLeod-Genest take gold Terry Fox places third in medal count at tourney Terry Fox wrestler Mate McLeod-Genest was crowned champion in the 78-kg senior boys weight class after defeating fellow Raven Brett Boyce at
the school’s invitational tournament last week. The victory in the final and Boyce’s silver medal helped the school to a third place finish overall in the medal count and McLeodGenest was also named outstanding senior male of the tournament. He was not the only
Terry Fox wrestler to take home a gold medal. Brooke Wheeler, who coach Jorge Knizek said was the most improved wrestler this year, fought her way to a victory in the finals, adding to the Raven’s medal count. She was joined on the podium by Grade 9 wrestler Cynthia Dunn,
who took home a silver medal after losing to a Grade 12 athlete in the final match. The boys team also saw some impressive results. Grade 10 Soma Marton picked up a bronze in the 57-kg category after defeating fellow Raven Victor Do in

the consolation round. Terry Fox’s Andrew Mercado also had a bronze medal in the tournament. Brycen Mayoh, another Grade 10, snagged fifth place in the 54-kg category, while Grade 12 Nathan Dalton took fifth in the 110-kg division in his first tournament.

The B.C. Junior Provincial Curling Championships will kick off at the Poirier Sports and Leisure Complex between Jan. 2 and Jan. 6. Submitted photoS
Curling championship will feature teams from across B.C. continued from page 23
It begins with an opening cermony at 6 p.m. on Jan. 2 and ends with the finals on Jan. 6, draws that will take place at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. The final draw will be televised on SHAW cable and the winners will play in the Canadian Junior National Championship in Fort McMurray, Alta., next month. Scott-Dunn said she expects many local curling fans will turn out for the event, which costs $2 per draw or $10 fora week-long package (people under the age of 18 can enter for free). By hosting the provincial championships, she also hopes that people in the area who do not know much about curling will be enticed to come to the Coquitlam Curling Association and try it out. Curling is a fun activity for the family, she said, and it is easy to learn, even if someone has never tried the sport before.

Season’s Greetings and Happy New Year from the Chamber
✷
We’ve had a fantastic year at the Tri-Cities Chamber of Commerce filled with great members, great events, and a great community. Here’s to the same in 2013! Tri-Cities mayors Richard Stewart of Coquitlam, Greg Moore of Port Coquitlam and Mike Clay of Port Moody gathered for a casual Q&A and barbeque.
e the olumbia, chos ier of British C er the next year. em Pr , rk la C umbia ov ble Christy The Honoura uss her vision for British Col olf & Country Club on G sc d di oo to tw es Tri-Citi ld at Wes event was he on he nc lu e Th . November 27
We kicked off 2012 with our annual Gala at Red Robinson Show Theatre. Davide Fantillo, Elisa Fantillo, John Fantillo and his date, Lisa.
Oh, Canada! We celebrated Canada Day at Lafarge Lake with a record setting crowd. The fireworks may have been delayed a day but, as Mayor Richard Stewart puts it, “Canada is worth celebrating two nights in a row.”
A very surprised Darla Furlani poses with Davide Fantillo at our Christmas Luncheon after learning she is our Chamber Member of the Year.
Despite the rain, our members had a great time at our Golf Tournament at Westwood Plateau Golf & Country Club.

Restaurant of the Month: Townhall Public House Townhall Public House C 925 Brunette Ave, Coquitlam
oquitlam is lucky to be home to the Lower Mainland’s second Townhall Public House, created by Joseph Richard Group. JRG is a collection of pubs, nightclubs and other ventures with 13 establishments fine-tuned to the needs of their respective clienteles. This Townhall Public House sits in the former French Quarter Pub location in Maillardville – a neighbourhood of the Tri-Cities filled with tradition and history. Built in 1934 in the former Jubilee Hotel, The French Quarter pub was one of two original pubs built to service the millworkers occupying the majority of the town. The pub’s main feature, the original antique ceiling and fan system, has been restored to working conditions (minus a few squeaks) to make former French Quarter patrons feel right at home At Townhall, you’ll find more than a dozen beers on tap and 25 craft brews to choose from. You’re certain to find one to pair with their classic pub offerings like Chicken Wings, Fish and Chips, and the 3-pounds-of-ManVersus-Food Townhall Burger. Looking for somewhere to host your next special event? Townhall will let you customize your own menu. More than just a pub, the folks at Townhall care about the people in their community. They frequently fundraise for schools and charities, strive to support neighbourhood food producers, and keep their communities out of harm’s way by participating in local safety initiatives. With their vintage design elements, signature menu offerings and consistent commitment to service, Townhall trusts you’ll enjoy your visit with them. Let them be your stomping ground, your escape route, your safe haven, your happy place. And in return, they’ll offer you a night you’ll remember long after the sun comes up. ➤ Get home safe with Operation Red Nose Operation Red Nose is a volunteer driving service provided during the Winter Holiday Season to all drivers who have been drinking or who do not feel fit to drive their own vehicle back home. Thanks to Tri-Cities Operation Red Nose coordinator Chris Wilson of KidSport Tri-Cities, a team of volunteers is ready to make sure you get home safe. This free service operates until December 31st. Donations are gladly accepted and go to KidSport. The only requirement is that the client must own or operate a vehicle at the time of his or her call. Call 778-866-6673 and get home safe this holiday season. ➤ Coquitlam Foundation Now Accepting Grant Applications The Coquitlam Foundation is now accepting applications from qualified individuals and organizations for grants, bursaries and scholarships to be awarded in 2013. We are the WorkBC Employment Centers in Port Coquitlam, Coquitlam, Langley, Newton, and Richmond. How did you get into this business? Avia Employment Services is a division of Back in Motion. Coast Therapeutic & Sports Massage
What is your favourite thing about what you do? Being able to assist people to maintain their best health, manage their pain and rehabilitate injuries. It is very rewarding to help people live a better quality life, in whatever form that takes. Why do you love about living/working in the Tri-Cities? I love the small town feel yet being so close to the big city. I still run into past friends, teachers and patients at the grocery store. I’ve lived and grown up here since age 12 so it feels good to give back to my community both personally and professionally.
Who is your ideal customer/client? We work with the elite athlete as well as the average working man or woman, including children and seniors as well. Anybody who cares about their health and their body, anybody who wants to manage pain or injury, and anybody who wants to live their most active life possible can benefit from seeing one of our RMTs. How do most of your clients/customers hear about you? Word of mouth, direct referral from other patients. We also have a website www. coasttherapy.ca and a facebook page www. facebook.com/Coasttherapy .

What do you get out of being a Chamber member? I’ve met some wonderful new friends and been introduced to many other small businesses that I may not otherwise have known about.
Where do you see your business in five years? I would like to continue to add more services for our patients. I love the idea of multidisciplinary - combing other health professionals under one roof.
Merry members of the Tri-City business community had their pictures taken with Santa at Westwood Plateau Golf & Country Club during the Chamber’s annual Christmas Luncheon.
