A Merry Dickens Christmas in Kamloops By Andrea Klassen STAFF REPORTER andrea@kamloopsthisweek.com
T
he house on the corner is, by comparison, unassuming. Two storeys, topped by a gabled roof, with a bay window in the front. A small placard hangs by the front door, announcing it as the home of “Tutbury Printer.” None of the pieces move and none of the household activity is visible through the handpainted windows. But, in Karen Chayeski’s village, Tutbury Printer holds a place of honour as the house that started it all. Without the house, there would be no harbour scene in the fireplace, no Christmas-Carol tableau in the den,
no guest book by the front door. And, certainly not the largest display of all, which occupies the Chayeskis’ own bay window from midNovember until the end of the Christmas season. Circled by a model train, the bay-window village is the grandest display of all, home to ceramic replicas of Big Ben, a horse-drawn carriage, a daily newspaper, all manner of townsfolk — and one humble printing shop. Each model is part of the Dickens’ Village Series, a line of handpainted houses and shops with a cult following of collectors across North America. The houses are famous for their detail. Peer through the windows of more recent acquisitions and you’ll see Christmas banquets laid with delicately painted china, fancy ladies and gentlemen hobnobbing in front parlours — even the Ghost of Christmas Past lurking in
an upstairs bedroom. Karen’s introduction into Dickens’ Village life arrived 18 years ago this Christmas, as a present from her daughter, Kimberley, then a “starving student” at Cariboo College. “Number one, plain Jane,” Karen says with a smile at the printing shop, during a tour of the village late one afternoon. “That’s number one in my heart still. This wouldn’t have happened if I hadn’t gotten that.” From there, though, the collection spread. Another daughter, Leah, in Calgary, is lucky enough to live near a shop whose Dickens’ Village displays are the stuff of legend, Karen says. And, Kimberley has pitched in several more pieces since her student days ended. X See VILLAGE A4
Ted and Karen Chayeski relish the intricate Dickens Village in their South Kamloops home. The ever-growing village began with a gift from daughter Kimberley 18 years ago. Go online to kamloopsthisweek.com to view video of the amazing village. Dave Eagles/KTW

MERRY CHRISTMAS The thrill of 3 Mile a cherished memory
“
KTW reader Melissa Gilchrist lends her Christmas story to this Christmas Eve edition of the paper. More Yuletide tales can be read on pages A10 and A19. Isabella Westwood’s beautiful creation begins our collection of Christmas drawings by Kamloops kids can be enjoyed by flipping through the pages. Merry Christmas!
FROZEN, absolutely frozen” is what I said to my dad as I poked at his ice-laden beard. It was our third run of the day down 3 Mile. Mom was getting tired of driving us up the hill and she was anxious to get home and start prepping for our annual Christmas Eve party. But, what sevenyear-old cares about a boring adult Christmas Eve party when you can rush down an icy hill while all your friends and family are screaming and cheering as they slide down beside you? The 3 Mile run was a family tradition. Wake early, wrap up every exposed body part with as much winter gear as you could find, pray you didn’t have to pee and head out. Most moms drove. They would huddle into groups, sit-
Isabella Westwood ting on tailgates, sipping hot chocolate at the bottom of the hill and taking bets on whose kid/husband would crash first. Dads were more active participants. My father would place my older brother onto his
fancy red Xtreme GT and I would follow on my purple crazy carpet. Now, the key to the crazy carpet is weight distribution. Sit straight down and you may go faster, but your bum will take a bruising.
That’s why many of us opted for the more controlled and less painful approach of bobbing down the hill on our knees. I’m sure orthopedic surgeons collectively cringe at the idea. Anyhow, Dad
would then grab another crazy carpet and start off right behind me, making sure I wasn’t going to run directly into the first tree on the hill. 3 Mile was infamous for broken bones, cut-up hands
and concussions. It ran through dense forest at the end of a dead-end road, winding, twisting and rolling through the trees until you reached the lake. I loved the rush of gliding down the
hill surrounded by trees, snow-covered branches slashing against my arms and screaming at the top of my lungs. Nothing has been as fabulously exhilarating and scary as the first sled of the season down 3 Mile and I haven’t found a comparable hill to take my own children down since then. Sadly, the land that made up 3 Mile has been broken up, fenced and sold off, yet I still fondly remember frozen fingers and toes, the burn of hot chocolate on my tongue and the thrill of beating my older brother to the bottom. For me, the best Christmas memories involve friends, family and fun. Merry Christmas and may you all find delicious hot chocolate and a bandage at the ready when you reach the end of your own Christmas run. Melissa Gilchrist Kamloops

Village a team effort
Karen’s husband, Ted, also gets in on the action. Each house is illuminated from within and wiring the village and its multiple suburbs falls to him, as does setting up “the Christmas board,” which houses the main display. Working together — Ted wiring,
Karen unpacking and arranging — the Chayeskis can have the village up in three days, if all goes well. There’s only one thing keeping the village from growing even larger — a limited land base. “We have run out of room,” Karen admits — but, she thinks there may be an opportunity for
history to repeat itself. Her helpful daughters have children of their own now and, when they get older, she hopes to allow them to take home one house per year — “kind of like a lending library” — freeing up a lot in the den, fireplace, basement, dining room or even the front window.

As 2012 draws to a close, we would like to take the time to thank the Kamloops community for your patience as we prepare our Environmental Assessment Application for submission. Moving into 2013, our work will continue to focus on finalizing the baseline studies that form the foundation of our application; the application which will answer the questions you’ve been asking. We want to assure you that the consultation process is integral and relevant to the outcome of our Environmental Assessment Application. We are mindful of our responsibility to keep you apprised of our ongoing activities and developments and, as such, we feel it is important to inform you that we are planning to conduct drilling and ground surveying throughout the Project area. The information collected will be used as support for our Environmental Assessment Application. We will have staff and equipment working in the area and have notified the affected land-owners of where and how this work will be done. We are also coordinating our efforts with Kinder Morgan to ensure that the integrity of the local pipeline is maintained as we do this work. Drilling and surveying is expected to commence before year end and be completed in the spring of 2013. KGHM International is looking forward to further engaging local residents and other stakeholder groups in order to advance the Ajax Project in a way that will ensure we are making a positive contribution to the City of Kamloops and the Thompson Nicola Regional District. From all of us at KGHM International, we wish you a safe and happy holiday season and a joyful new year. We look forward to talking with you u ssoon. oon. Sincerely, KGHM International Ltd.

FRÖHLICHE WEIHNACHTEN
Wildlights shine on B.C. Wildlife Park The B.C. Wildlife Park in Kamloops has launch its 15th annual Wildlights Celebration. The highlight of this year’s event is, once again, the Symphony of Lights Show, which features a spectacular laser-light show, with lights synchronized to music with shows each night in the award-winning outdoor Highland Valley Copper Amphitheatre. Visitors will also be treated to viewing nightly wolf and elk feedings and examining owls in the Birds of Prey Exhibit. After watching the Symphony of Lights show, visitors can dare to challenge the Giant Maze, take a trip around the park on the Wildlife Express
miniature train and then enjoy a wagon ride from the Home Hardware Family Farm. Young and old alike will be entertained by Uncle Chris the Clown nightly — and can take a leisurely stroll around the park to see all the dazzling lights and light displays. This year’s event features more than 600,000 lights and 380 life-size light sculptures. New this year are two rope-light displays, one being, one of which is Flags of the World, featuring light displays of flags of 25 countries. Finally, visitors can sit back, relax and sip some hot chocolate around crackling campfires. The festival dates
back to 1998 and, since then, more than 315,000 guests have experienced the show. This year, the Wildlights Celebration runs nightly to Jan. 6, with the exception of Christmas Day. Operating hours are from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Admission rates are $11. for adults, $9 for seniors and $7 for children ages 3 to 17. Children two and under are admitted free. The British Columbia Wildlife Park is located in east Kamloops, about 15 minutes down the Trans-Canada Highway from the city centre. For more information, call 250-573-3242 or visit the web site atBCzoo.org.

Yes, Virginia, there still is a Santa Claus We at Kamloops This Week take pleasure in publishing this famous editorial that first appeared in the New York Sun in 1897. One hundred and 15 years later, the message still resonates. Dear Editor: I am 8 years old. Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus. Papa says, “If you see it in the Sun, it’s so.” Please tell me the truth, is there a Santa Claus? Virginia O’Hanlon 115 West Ninety-Fifth Street Virginia, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the scepticism of a sceptical age. They do not believe except what they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men’s or children’s, are little. In this great universe of ours man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect, as compared with the bound-
less world about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge. Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! How dreary would be the world if there were no
Santa Claus! It would be as dreary as if there were no Virginias. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The eternal light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished. Not believe in Santa
Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies! You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas Eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if you did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor
men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that’s no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world. You tear apart the baby’s rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived, could tear apart. Only faith, fancy, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, Virginia, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding. No Santa Claus! Thank God he lives! And he lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay, ten times ten thousand years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.

WHAT’S YOUR TAKE? Christmas is right around the corner. Tell the truth: Do you believe in Santa Claus? Join us as we Relay for Life for cancer research Editor: Relay for Life . . . yes, I think I’ve heard of that. It’s to raise money for cancer research, I think. Relay for Life . . . two years ago, it became Relay for Lizzie’s Life. And, we’ll never look at it the same way ever again. It’s unfortunate that it often takes a tragedy, or a bit of devastating news, to make the majority of us act. That is what happened to our family in October 2010. Our then 21-monthold daughter, Elizabeth, was diagnosed with bilateral nephroblastomatosis,
or Wilms’ tumour. Our lives turned upside down in a matter of 30 seconds. We dove head-first into a year-long battle with Lizzie’s kidney cancer. Treatment included over 35 weeks of chemotherapy, a nephrectomy, 100 injections of white blood-cell stimulator and more than a dozen MRIs. There were weeks at a time spent away from our other children, our family, our home and our work. We worried each day about how much time we would have with her. We wondered if she’d see kindergarten. We wondered if
we’d see her get married. It scared us to death. During the summer of 2011, we decided to join Relay for Life. Throughout our journey, it had become crystal clear we needed to give back — and we encouraged our family and friends to do so as well. To give thanks for the miracle that is Lizzie, to make sure the number of families that get devastating news becomes fewer and fewer, to see an end to cancer. So, we Relay — and we will every year from now on. Lizzie will know why we Relay and,
as a survivor, she’ll encourage others. We Relay for Lizzie’s life. And, we now know Relay not only raises money for outstanding cancer research. Funds raised at the Canadian Cancer Society’s Relay For Life are used to: • Influence change through advocacy efforts to create healthier environments, helping people reduce their risk of cancer ; • Empower Canadians with reliable, up-to-date information through the Cancer Information Service at 1-888-9393333; • Provide a range
of practical and emotional support programs to people living with cancer, including family members and caregivers. Every step taken at the Canadian Cancer Society’s Relay For Life helps people right here in Kamloops who are facing their own cancer journey. Please join the fight. Get involved as a volunteer or as a participant with Relay in Kamloops. For more information on how you can get involved, contact Jen Dies by email at jdies@bc.cancer.ca. Jenifer Harbaruk Kamloops

GESEËNDE KERSFEES
Rediscovering magic of season
Sophia Westwood, age 5
Throughout the majority of our adult lives, I have witnessed both of my sisters’ struggles with their annual Christmas blues. Twenty years ago, my older sister, Celia, announced to her family that she would not be participating in the preparation of Christmas dinner. Celia’s decision to fade into the background on that Christmas marked the beginning of her gradual retreat from all family activities until her sudden death at the age of 63. My younger sister, Heather, has long suffered from anxiety, which is usually triggered by financial worries that increase during the Christmas season. Celia lived in Ontario, while Heather lives in Virginia. I have remained in our home province of British Columbia and I have not celebrated Christmas with my sisters since 1968. Although I have experienced my share of less-than-enthusiastic during December, I usually happily anticipate the Christmas season. Five years ago, I moved into a new apartment complex and was quickly befriended by a tenant who was also retired and managed without owning a vehicle. Within a few months, the Christmas season was upon us and, much to my dismay, I discovered my new friend, Marie, was plagued with the dreaded bah-humbug syndrome. Finally, this year, I felt confident enough in our friendship to give Marie a pep talk in hopes of snapping her out of her annual bout of misery. Two weeks before Christmas, I hosted a luncheon for three of my closest friends, who have constantly lifted me up during the past 25 years. These special women have tirelessly given of their time, energies and emotional strength since my marriage dissolved in 1988. I can never fully repay them for all their much-needed support over the years.
More than any previous December, this year I really got into the giving mood, which has involved more of my time and creativity than monetary investment. The large pot of vegetarian chili and bowl of spinach salad also provided lunch for the secretary in my building and dinner for another retired single woman friend the next night. I have also been busy making copies of photos of get-togethers with my childhood friends and including these pictures in my Christmas cards. These acts of kindness have given me such joy and I couldn’t wait to share my experience with Marie. After my luncheon, I invited Marie to my place for tea and I immediately outlined my philosophy on how to combat the Christmas blues. Make your No. 1 New Year’s resolution that December will be the best month of your year and begin immediately to work toward achieving that goal. Throughout the year, be constantly aware of all the many good deeds that your friends and family bestow upon you. These deeds could include giving you a ride to the doctor, inviting you out for coffee, phoning to check up on you, remembering your birthday or just being available to listen and laugh together. Two days after my pep talk, Marie invited me to her place for tea and she shared her shortbread cookies she had been busily baking, along with butter tarts that she planned on delivering to several people in our building who have really helped her during the year. Her home was bright and cheery with a glow of Christmas. I am delighted for Marie and amazed at how quickly she has turned the season into a time of joy. That’s my Christmas story. Pass it on. Christmas love Christmas means a day to spend time with my family. It means watching my 19-month-old son open gifts. It also means feasting on a wonderful home-cooked meal prepared by my husband. I really love Christmas as we get to stay in our PJs all day, too. Happy Holiday from the Vos family. Lisa Vos Kamloops

Jay fans can look forward to 2013-2014
A
BLOCKBUSTER trade in 1990 paved the way to a couple of World Series titles for the Toronto Blue Jays and their fans are hoping lightning strikes again in the wake of another major deal. The Jays and Miami Marlins got together in mid-November and swapped 12 players. At its bare bones, here’s what happened: The Jays got the wheat; Miami got the chaff. Blue Jays fans are ecstatic; Miami fans (what few of them are left) are ready to lynch owner Jeffrey Loria, who managed to pry millions of taxpayer dollars out of Florida government officials to build a fancy new stadium that opened in 2012. Now, instead of a World Series banner flying over the Marlins’ stadium, it seems like a white flag is blowing in the breeze. Overnight, the Jays became a contender with the acquisition of starting pitchers Mark Buehrle and Josh Johnson, and shortstop Jose Reyes, a former National League batting champ. A few weeks later, Canada’s MLB club bolstered its bullpen by acquiring reigning National League Cy Young Award winner R.A Dickey from the New York Mets. Toronto got rid of only one regular in the trade with Florida, shortstop Yunel Escobar (the guy who embarrassed the team late last season by writing a homophobic slur, in Spanish, on his eyeblack). The other jettisoned Jays are all promising prospects, but Toronto fans will be quite happy to see them develop into big-league players in Florida if it means Buehrle, Johnson and Reyes lead the Jays to the playoffs. The trade appeared to be so one-sided that Commissioner Bud Selig said he needed a couple of days to study it before giving
BRUCE PENTON From PRESS ROW approval, calling it a deal that might not be “in the best interests of baseball.” It’s certainly in the best interests of the Blue Jays and their fans. Buehrle is an “innings-eater” who pitched a perfect game a couple of years back for the White Sox and was a 13-game winner with Miami in 2012. Johnson was 8-14 last year after missing most of 2011 with a shoulder injury, but was regarded as one of the game’s best young pitchers in 2009 and 2010, when he went 15-5 and 11-6, winning the NL ERA title in 2010 with a 2.30 mark. Johnson and Buehrle will join Ricky Romero and Brandon Morrow in a suddenly top-notch rotation.
With the likes of Jose Bautista, Brett Lawrie, free-agent signee Melky Cabrera, Colby Rasmus, Adam Lind and Edwin Encarnacion banging the ball, it could be an exciting year around Rogers Centre in 2013. By the way, that trade back in 1990? Tony Fernandez and Fred McGriff were sent packing to San Diego in exchange for Roberto Alomar and Joe Carter. You might recall Carter hitting a pretty important home run for the Jays in 1993.
“Quote, unquote” • Headline at SportsPickle.com: “Miami starting to regret building $634 million stadium for Toronto’s Triple-A team.” • Logan Morrison, Marlins outfielder, in the aftermath of The Trade: “I bet Canadians are feeling a little better about NAFTA tonight . . .” • Todd Behrendt, FoxSports.com: “Dear fans, we have no intention of winning anytime soon. Love, The Marlins. P.S. Thanks for
the new stadium!” • Dwight Perry of the Seattle Times: “Guan Tianglang, a 14-year-old middleschool student from China, is set to become the youngest player in Masters history next April after winning the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship in Thailand. And here we thought, when we were 14, that having a paper route was cool.” • R.J. Currie of sportsdeke.com: “Scottie Pippen helped President Obama’s team win a pickup basketball game on Election Day. Out of habit, Michael Jordan took the credit.” • Ex-Texas football coach Darrell Royal, who died recently at 88, on All-American running back James Saxton: “He could run like small-town gossip.” • This sounds fishy: Blogger Bill Littlejohn, after Mike Trout became the Angels’ first Rookie of the Year since Tim Salmon: “Think their scouts used the same bait?” Care to comment? REMEMBERING OUR JESSE BOY y August 22, 1983 ~ August 1, 2009
Christmas 2012
We’ve shared our hearts full of Holiday cheer And shopped for presents for loved ones this year But even with all the Holiday bliss There’s someone we lost that we terribly miss, And as Christmas Day draws near We wish, with all our hearts, he was here. Jess is living his life way up past the stars Somewhere past Jupiter, Saturn and Mars. He’s spending his Christmas in Heaven, you see And last night as I slept, a dream came to me. He was standing before me, happy and well He said to me, “I have something to tell.” “Heaven’s more wondrous than you would believe, It’s the greatest of gifts I could ever receive. I’d like for you all to remember to the good, You know that I’d be there if only I could So don’t feel so bad that I’m not there, There are so many memories you can share. As you gather together, I’m sure you’ll Ànd The gift deep within you that I left behind. Each one is unique and wrapped brightly with love They shine from your hearts As I shine above.” y
Merry Christmas, Jess y Always loved ~ Forever missed Mum, Dad, Kyle, Char, li’l Jesse y & Family
Her Journey’s Just Begun Don’t think of her as gone away, Her journey’s just begun. Life holds so many facets, This earth is only one. Just think of her as resting, From the sorrows and the tears, In a place of warmth and comfort, Where there are no days and years. Think how she must be wishing, That we could know today, How nothing but our sadness, Can really pass away. And think of her as living, In the hearts of those she touched, For nothing loved is ever lost; And she was loved so much. E. Brenneman

Kamloops at 200: Your history In June and August, Kamloops This Week published two special editions to mark the 200th anniversary of the founding of our community. Whether you come from a family that
settled here a century ago or if you arrived last month, everyone has some kind of history with Kamloops. As part of KTW’s 200-year special publications, we asked readers for their history with
the city where the rivers meet. Today, we continue Your History, based on submissions we received. Future editions of KTW will include more Your History stories.
There’s no place like home Back in 1973, my husband got a chance to move our family out of Burnaby by managing Interior Fire and Safety, located at that time on Tranquille Road. I remember thinking, ‘I’ll have to like this venture’ as, being a born-and-raised Vancouver gal, I didn’t like leaving my folks, relatives and friends so far away. Well, it didn’t take me long to realize the differences. I could go to $1.49 Day at Woodwards and still be home in time to make a nice dinner for family and company. Not so in Vancouver. With the traffic gthere, it was an all-day venture. Giving up the rain certainly was not a hardship. The pulp mill and oil refinery took some
adjustment with the smells — but that didn’t last all day like the rain could. I worked for the School District 24/73 for 30 years, which gave our children a mother who was home shortly after they were dismissed from school. Kamloops is a great place to raise children. Activities for the children were short travels around town, so they were able to participate in more than one sport. To me, Kamloops is the best kept secret! Having travelled to Australia, New Zealand, Panama, China, the Caribbean, New York, Chili, Peru and Argentina, I realize more than ever what a God-given paradise we live in and I love to brag about our fine city. — Judy Kenz

And joy in finding a new home I am Vietnamese and came here from Vietnam. My husband, who is also Vietnamenese, sponsored me. I have been living here for about a month, too short, but I have already had some great experiences. My husband and his sister picked me up at Vancouver airport when I arrived. She lives in Vancouver and we spent a few days there, going to Metrotown, a Vietnamenese market and Stanley Park. I travelled on many roads and saw many big buildings with people inside busy with their jobs. That’s really a life — nice but fast, busy and a little bit stressful. Then, my husband and I came back Kamloops. I had many suprises when we got back. The first thing is traffic. Traffic in Kamloops is better than in Vancouver. I like that. I like the scenery, the air and the enviroment — all of them are very natural, very
beautiful. My house is near the river so, when the weather is not too cold, I often go walk on its shores. I feel happy and comfortable. If others see me walking, they smile and say hi. Kamloops people are very friendly. My husband has been living here about 20 years. He left Vietnam when he was 11 years old. He went to school here, graduated from the university and is now working as a metallurgical technician. He loves Kamloops and he wants me love it , too. Of course I love Kamloops. I am learning English at Kamloops Immigrant Services and everybody there is very good. I will try my best to learn English and then I will get a job. I will have a happy life with my husband here. I want to share my feelings, my small life, with all of you. — Huong Thu Nguyen

Globetrotters at TCC The Harlem Globetrotters have a stop in Kamloops on Wednesday, Feb. 13, at the Tournament Capital Centre. This time, the tour has an interactive component. The You Write the Rules World Tour includes a chance to vote online for what rules should be used in the game. Among the choices to vote on: • Two-ball basketball, which would see the legendary team play the game with a pair of balls; • Double points, which is pretty obvious and could lead to some wild results; • A four-point shot, which would have to take place 35 feet from the basket, not from the regular three-point line; • A penalty box, an innovation introduced in the 2011 tour, which would see players sent to cool off for any foul; and • Six on five — five Globetrotters play six challengers. To vote, go online to harlemglobetrotters.com. Tickets are $28 plus taxes and charges and are available at the Interior Savings Centre box office (cash only), at the TCC front desk, online at ticketweb.ca or by calling 1-888-222-6608.

Mercedes-Benz re-enters compact-wagon segment “T HEY’RE GOING TO SELL A TON OF THESE,” MY LEARNED CO-DRIVER EXCLAIMED OF THE 2013 MERCEDESBENZ B 250. A writer who is more on the business side of auto journalism pointed out that offering it only in Canada — and not the U.S. — was a brilliant move because it hits at Canada’s love of smaller, more utilitarian vehicles with an increasing Canadian yearning for more luxury features and an added touch of exclusivity. I agreed but I see it more as upping the smaller MPV game started by the Mazda MPV/Dodge Journey that is now being joined by the Chevrolet Orlando and Ford Transit Connect Wagon. Where the B 250 may have a leg up is the price, starting at $29,900 with that coveted threepointed star on the hood. The B 250 is not new to Canada. An earlier version, the B 200 was sold here until the 2010 model year. After a hiatus, the people JIM ROBINSON mover is back with relatively the First same shape but with some major DRIVE changes. Mercedes-Benz is a leader in safety and that is reflected in standard features on the B 250 like 11 airbags, electronic stability control and even Attention Assist that monitors the driver and flashes an icon of a coffee cup and sounds an alert if the B 250 detects the driver becoming drowsy. But, also standard is the world debut of collision-prevention assist, a first on any Mercedes-Benz vehicle that will soon be found on every vehicle it makes. The system is always on at speeds from 30-250 km/h. Only when it senses you may hit the car in front of you are a visual and audible alert sounded. As soon as the brake is depressed, the adaptive brakeassist system integrated into collision-prevention assist can boost the brake pressure to prevent the accident, thus ensuring the available braking distance between you and guy ahead is used to maximum effect. Also seen for the first time is a new 2.0-litre turbocharged inline four-cylinder producing 208 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque driving the front wheels through a new seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. The transmission is capable of double and triple downshifts, with the driver being given the choice of three drive modes – economy, sport and manual. In economy mode, fuel consumption is listed at 7.9/5.5/6.8L/100 km city/highway/combined. Summing it up, the new engine produces 55 per cent more power and is 18 per cent more fuel-efficient than the 2.0-litre engine it replaces. Much was made about the “sandwich” platform of the previous B-Class, but it has been dropped. The reason Mercedes-Benz officials frankly admitted was customers didn’t like the handling. Thus, the B 250 is a unibody with MacPherson strut system up front and an independent four-link system at the rear. There is an available sports-package setup that also low-
ers the B 250 by 20 millimetres. Miami and environs is one vast megacity flowing along the Atlantic coast and, as such, is mainly urban travel, perfect for something like the B-Class. Except for Highway 1 North and South, a bulk of the driving component of the press introduction in that community was on city streets that were a giant maze to me. The turning radius on the B 250 was tight (11 metres)
and, thankfully so, as this is a city where, if you make a mistake, you had better recover quickly as the locals give no quarter. I expected the B 250 to be quiet because it was a Mercedes. Nevertheless, I have to talk about the wind noise — or, more correctly, the lack of it. X See MERCEDES B8

Mercedes shows small can still mean elegant X From B7
Even though it is a station wagon, the 2013 B 250 has a drag coefficient of 0.26, better than a lot of sports cars on the road. But, look closely and you’ll notice how the shape of the front fenders optimizes the airflow around the front wheels — and there is a patent-pending serrated wheel-arch spoiler that decreases drag and wind noise at the same time. Along with the outside mirrors mounted on the door, not the A pillar; little things like this can mean a lot when it comes to lessening noise. And, while the body height is reduced by
five millimetres over the previous model,

the seating has been made more upright for a more commanding view of the road ahead. Claimed by Mercedes-Benz to be one of the most spacious vehicles in its class, an option is the Easy-Vario-Plus system that offers fore/ aft adjustment of the rear seats by up to 140 millimetres (thereby increasing the luggage compartment volume to 666 litres from 488 litres) and a frontpassenger seat whose
backrest can be folded forward onto the seat cushion. With all seats flat, cargo volume is 1,547 litres. The B 250 will tow up to 1,500 kilograms. Cloth is the standard seating material but optionally available is what Mercedes calls Artico leather. It’s man-made but looks and feels like the real thing, right down to the double stitching. There are a host of options such as
$1,200 for the memory power seats, $2,000 for the sport package that includes 17-inch wheels, Bi-Xenon headlights at $750 and $800 for the blind spot/ lane departure system. Standard is a 5.8inch TFT colour display mounted on the centre of the dashboard, looking very much like a small tablet. There is a larger seven-inch version with the navigation option, but the 5.8-inch

does just about everything you need. When you add up all the added extras compared to the outgoing B-Class, such as the new engine/ transmission and all the electronic driver aids like collision alert, it represents $7,000 in added value. The new B 250 will not be coming until the third quarter of 2013
and, even then, (probably because of supply), Mercedes is expecting to sell 3,000 units — which seems low. Nevertheless, at less than $30,000 and with the cachet of the name, the B-Class is driving into one of Canada’s emerging segments. The B 250 proves being small doesn’t mean you can’t be elegant, as well.

Here in Canada, the Malibu comes in three powertrain choices and three trim levels — LS, LT and LTZ. The Malibu LS starts at $24,995 and comes with standard four-wheel disc brakes with ABS and Intelligent Brake Assist, 10 airbags, traction control and StabiliTrak electronic stability control, 16-inch alloy wheels, heated power mirrors with integrated turn signals, remote keyless entry, power windows and door locks, air conditioning, tilt/ telescopic steering wheel with cruise/ audio controls, power driver height-adjustable front seat, 60/40 split-folding rear seats and a six-speaker AM/ FM/CD system with Bluetooth connectivity. The LS uses a 197horsepower, 2.5-litre ECOTEC four-cylinder engine with direct injection and variablevalve timing. GM boasts this standard engine offers more base horsepower than the new Toyota

Technology could be wave of the future X From B9
The LTZ bumps the power ante up significantly with the first turbocharged engine ever offered in a Malibu, a 259horsepower, 2.0-litre ECOTEC turbo fourcylinder, also with direct injection and variable-valve timing. In between those two extremes, most Canadians shop at the LT trim level, which is split into two packages — 1LT and 2LT — both starting with the base engine but also offering a third and more innovative powertrain, the Malibu Eco system that adds an electric power assist for reduced emissions and improved fuel economy. GM Canada doesn’t use the word “hybrid” here because, unlike most hybrids, the Malibu Eco never drives the vehicle by electric power alone. The rationale for this “light electrification” technology is it is a “smart choice for customers who want a midsize car with excellent fuel efficiency, but without the higher price of some full hybrid sedans.” The Malibu Eco uses the eAssist technology that first debuted in the Buick lineup. A 120-volt, aircooled lithium-ion battery pack is connected to a 15-kw motor-generator that can add 15 horsepower (11kw) and 79 poundfeet of torque drive assist directly to the drivetrain. Regenerative braking provides up to 15 kW of electricity to charge the battery. The Malibu Eco shuts down fuel delivery in some deceleration conditions and uses an idle/stop system to turn the engine off when the vehicle is stopped. When the driver releases the brake, the electric motor’s full 110-pound-feet torque potential spins the engine back up
smoothly and seamlessly. The eAssist system is mated to a 182horesepower, 2.4-litre ECOTEC directinjection four-cylinder engine. Granted, the Malibu Eco will not offer the instant gratification of the turbo-powered LTZ, there’s still enough accumulated power here to satisfy the needs of the average driver. Fuel economy is rated at 8.1/5.3L/100km (city/ hwy). That sounded pretty optimistic. My combined averages generally tend to lean towards “city” ratings. But, surprise, surprise, after 442 kilometres, I refilled the tank with 29.7 litres of gas for a combined average of 6.7L/100km. The Malibu Eco also adds low resistance-rolling tires and a tall transmission to enhance the fuelefficiency package, but it makes a few compromises, as well. The car is, of course, heavier with the added battery pack. Cargo space is reduced to 374 litres, down from 462 litres. And, the Malibu Eco comes with an inflator kit instead of a compact spare tire. The fuel tank is smaller — 59 litres instead of 70 litres, countering some of the curb-weight increase and, some would argue, a move balanced by the improved fuel economy. This mild hybrid system makes a lot of sense. It harnesses two technologies that will probably be adopted by all cars in future — recapturing the wasted energy of braking and the use of an idle/stop system. And, the battery pack is large enough to not only offer some power assist, it also enables smooth idle/ stop restarts, unlike the current technologies of, say, the BMW 3
Series and Kia Soul. As tested here, the Malibu Eco 1LT starts at $27,940. I haven’t really touched on the overall improvements to the new Malibu itself, but all this new technology is wrapped in a sleek package designed to add a sportier image to the family sedan. The profile is particularly handsome and there are design cues from lineup cousins Camaro and Corvette. Wider front and rear track measurements (51 millimetres wider) are reflected in the wider stance and more aggressive appearance. One little thing to note: The Malibu Eco and some of the upper-trim models add electronic shutters that can automatically close airflow through the lower grille opening to improve aerodynamic performance when extra air intake is not needed. Those are the kind of small technologies engineers love to harp on. They are also what your granddad would call “one more damn thing that can go wrong.” But, they are symbolic of the dedication to streamlining that gives the Malibu a coefficient of drag (Cd) rating of .29, which is pretty close to the rating of the sleekest
Chevrolet ever, the Volt rated at .28 Cd of drag. Inside, the Malibu Eco benefits from bigger dimensions, innovative storage areas, comfortable seating, twin cockpit-layout up front, roomy rear seating in back and quality materials and textures highlighted by cool ice-blue ambient lighting. The 2013 Chevrolet Malibu Eco was the first new 2013 midsize car to receive double safety honours, including a five-star overall vehicle score from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and a 2012 Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Along with other awards and honours, this complete package has made an impact with Canadian customers looking for a mid-
size solution. And, within that Malibu lineup, the innovative and fuel-efficient 2013 Chevrolet Malibu Eco with eAssist is certainly worth a look and a test drive.
