Little Warriors workshop valuable in child abuse prevention AUTUMN MacDONALD Observer Reporter

The children’s season This time of year brings joy to young children and those young at heart. Christmas concerts are one of the highlights of the year. One in three girls and one in six boys will experience unwanted sexual contact before their 18th birthday. Eighty per cent of these encounters will occur in a one-onone setting. Ninety-five percent of children will know their perpetrator. That’s why Little Warriors, a national charitable organization is offering a revolutionary workshop aimed at educating adults on how to help prevent, recognize and react to child sexual abuse. “This is a three-hour program with the intention to educate and empower,” program coordinator for B.C., Manitoba and Saskatchewan, Cortney Needham said. The curriculum is useful for parents, professionals or organizations who are: • seeking training for staff and volunteers in the prevention of child sexual abuse; • wanting to make a difference in their community; • needing to respond to insurance requirements regarding child protection; or • seeking Continuing Education Credits. The workshop includes: • an interactive workbook for each participant containing the full program curriculum; • DVD segments of sexual abuse survivors relating their stories of violation and healing, with segments from the author of the curriculum and from professionals who interface daily with

the problem of sexual abuse; • opportunity for discussion about important issues in sexual abuse prevention and the relevance of these issues within organizations that serve children and adolescents. After the workshop, participants will: • understand the facts of child sexual abuse – incidence rates and effects on individuals and society; • understand how child sexual abuse happens; • understand that adults are responsible for the protection of children; • understand the importance of screening staff/volunteers who work with children and adolescents; • understand the importance of a well conceived one-adult/onechild policy – have resources to react responsibly to incidents of child sexual abuse; • understand the proactive role youth-serving organizations need to take to protect children and educate their communities about child sexual abuse. “It’s about breaking down conversations,” Needham said. “It’s about education and empowerment. Perpetrators are less like to approach a child that is knowledgable and confident.” It all takes place, Jan. 3, 2013, 1 – 4 p.m. Cost is $30 a person or $25 for groups of two or more. Each participant receives a manual and certificate. Register online at www.littlewarriors.ca or call, 1-888-4401343.

City Budget 2013 underway

Council was presented with introductory information regarding Budget 2013. Over the past couple of months, staff have prepared a draft “status quo” budget - this is a budget that assumes no changes to service levels, programs or transfers to reserves. To meet this budget, a tax increase of 3.6 per cent for the average resident would be required. It is very early in the budget process, so this number should be taken for what it is – an early snapshot that provides council with information and options, and a place to begin budget discussions. That draft budget will be presented to council at the first review of the operating budget on Jan. 28 2013. There are several key dates for the budget process, including: • Jan. 28 - Review of the operating budget and supplemental (new spending) list. • Feb. 18 - Review of the 2013 capital budget • Feb. 25 - Formal public input session/ Review of the legislative, feefor-service, and community support budgets. • March 2013 Review the capital project voting results/ five-year financial plan • Adopt final budget before May 15. The public is encouraged to attend budget meetings and may provide input at any point in the

City forest The city will begin developing and reviewing a business case for a proposed Community Forest. Council approved striking a select committee to investigate the feasibility of a Community Forest and to report its findings to council before March 31, 2013. The report will include: the economic feasibility of a community forest; the optimal governance and operating model; and a final “go” or “no go” recommendation for Council. One of the primary goals of the community forest would be to provide revenue to the City that is not reliant on property taxation. Council appointed Councillors Mike Cave and Ed Coleman, QCEDC Board Chair Jim Gorsline, and fellow Board member Tony Bensted to the committee, along with City Manager Byron Johnson. The Cariboo Regional District will be invited to send a representative as well.

The City will begin investigating providing garbage pick-up in South Quesnel after a request was received from the South Hills and Area Neighbourhood Association. Staff will compile information and begin communicating with area residents in the New Year.

Bus increase Council increased the number of transit tickets it provides to the Transportation Assistance Program from 150 to 250 per month. The program is a partnership between the City and the United Way. The United Way distributes the tickets to appropriate local service agencies, who then give them to individuals for emergency or critical situations that require transit use. The tickets provide a way to access appointments dealing with employment services, medical aid, counselling or safe housing needs.

Approved Council received and approved the QCEDC 20132015 contract to provide economic development services. The corporation’s 2013-2015 strategic plan was also

received and endorsed by Council. For more information about QCEDC, visit www. quesnelinfo.com

Bursaries Council approved providing $800 bursaries to two students from Correlieu Secondary and the McNaughton Centre. The bursaries are provided based upon financial need and academic excellence.

Appointments The appointments of Peter Walsh, Lori Mckee, Christine Clark and Poonam Miglani to the Quesnel Museum and Heritage Commission were approved for two-year terms.

In my last year-end column, I wrote that I wanted to play my guitar more and get back to a level of basic fitness. By the end of 2011, I’d taken to joking that I was becoming a “fat, lazy politician,” but my weight gain and lack of exercise was not a joke and I truly did need to reform my lifestyle if I wanted to remain healthy. Fortunately, I have some very good friends who used my published goal of getting fit to cajole me into setting goals and actually getting fit. I’m happy to say that I dropped that weight and am back cycling, running, kayaking and crosscountry skiing again. And I’m back to spending more time with my family and friends doing all those activities. Reconnecting with the people and the activities that have always been important in my life has had the added benefit of refocusing my energies and reminding me why I got involved in politics in the first place. It’s in that vein that I hope our political leaders, particularly Premier Christy Clark and Opposition Leader Adrian Dix, enjoy some time to rest and reflect this Christmas season on what reforms they must commit to in order to revive our political system and restore some sense of our democracy. What’s needed is nothing short of a complete reform of the political party system in order to reinvigorate the role of each MLA in our legislative system. I hope we’ll see some positive movement in that direction in advance of the May 2013 election.

Best wishes for a wonderful and safe Christmas and New Year.

Okay, so I needed another R word. But, to a certain degree, “reform” does fit if you use the New Year to make resolutions (another R word!). After all, most resolutions are just subtle ways of saying we need to reform what we’re doing to achieve positive outcomes.

OPINIONS

Friday, December 21, 2012 Quesnel Cariboo Observer

Share the good cheer Christmas, at least according to the media, advertising and everything else that bombards us with messages every day, is about spending time with family, having a big feast, sharing gifts and being filled with ‘Christmas cheer.’ That’s OK for everyone who has a family that fits into the mold of the ‘perfect’ family. Happy faces, laughing children, people who love you and an abundance of cash, that is. But, guess what? Not everyone has a home from a Sears catalogue. Rather than being the happiest time of year, for many people Christmas is an unbearably lonely time. For those who don’t have family to share food and gifts with, being surrounded by images of Christmas merriment and perfect families only highlights the fact that they don’t fit the mold. The fact is, for every person enjoying the Christmas TV, magazines and stores are telling us we should be, there is a person who is not and who is feeling left out. There was an incident in the South Country this week that, according to the RCMP, appears to have been a suicide. Canadian statistics from help lines have shown that both the number and severity of calls by depressed persons increases every year through November and December, returning to normal volume towards the end of January. Christmas is depressing. But sometimes, all that is needed is someone to notice a person’s existence. If you know anybody who is spending Christmas alone, stop by with a card, invite them for dinner, or just knock on their door and say Merry Christmas. How good does it make you feel when a stranger smiles at you for no reason other than to show friendliness? Walking down the street, look people in the eye and smile. Make sure those who are feeling like they have nobody, know that other community members care and they are not alone. Merry Christmas from all the staff at the Cariboo Observer.

Why not keep it simple, Santa

F

or the last several weeks people have been asking me if I’m ready for Christmas. Usually I answer with a simple yes. The truth is, I don’t start getting ready for it until the day before. I know, I sound like a guy. But it works for me. Many years ago I wasn’t like this at all. I used to gear up for the holiday season early, making and buying cards and gifts for almost everyone I knew. I also spent a fair amount of time and money decorating the house. I did that for decades and each year I’d feel pressured to outdo myself. Eventually, I realized how stressed I was over the self-imposed work I was inflicting and I stopped. Now I don’t send cards at all and I only buy presents for my kids. Everyone else gets a gift card, if anything. As far as decorating the house goes, my nine-yearold daughter now loves to do that and surprise us

with the results. Her and her 12-year-old brother’s homemade decorations from years past are by far my favourite. Even Christmas dinner is a piece of cake for me. If we stay home my husband likes to cook, but more often than not we travel to his parents where the whole family meets and all I do is the dishes. If it sounds like I’m bragging about being lazy, I’m sorry, but I just can’t help myself. I feel excited about not being anxious and frazzled during the holiday season like I used to be. Over the

much as her son. “You have enough to do. If someone else likes to cook and you don’t, let them do it.” Always busy with a long list of things to accomplish, I loved the idea of not adding to it and needed no further convincing. I like to think that even if I didn’t have help, I’d still do my best to keep things at this time of year simple. After all, a Charlie Brown tree, something yummy to eat and the wonderful company of people I love is all I could ever want or hope for. A stressful holiday season is definitely no longer on my list for Santa. It might have taken me awhile to understand what I really wanted for Christmas, but now that I finally get it, there’s no turning back. Lori Welbourne is a syndicated columnist. last few Decembers I’ve been able to enjoy my time with friends and family in a way I couldn’t before and I don’t feel guilty about it. Why? Because I’m not burdening others with anything they don’t want to do and that includes myself. Fortunately for me, I lucked out in the mother-inlaw department. I love all my in-laws, but my husband’s mother is really special and she’s also everything I’m not. At this time of year she cooks, bakes, decorates and goes all out with the presents. She seems to love every minute of it and she makes Christmas day a lot of fun for our family. The topper for me is how she doesn’t care that I’m so lame at what she does so exceptionally well and she accepts me exactly as I am. “You don’t need to do everything,” she told me many years ago when I expressed concern that I wasn’t cooking nearly as

Where’s the Gold Pan’s Journey to recovery Christmas spirit? Editor: Not as many stores, shops, etc. are decorated this year for Christmas as they have done in the past. Some employees are told not to say Merry Christmas to customers, instead Happy Holidays. Christmas is the

Letters to the Editor

reason for the holiday so we need to get back to our tradition. We are being told by the media and those in government that some folks are offended by the word Christmas, well I am offended by the politically correct lack of the mention

of Christmas. Our family has decided to Christmas shop only at businesses that still acknowledge Christmas being the reason for the shopping frenzy this time of the year. I also notice the lack of a festive atmosphere here

as there used to be. I urge the “silent majority” who feel the same as I do to speak up. Thumbs up to the town for putting up lights in the main downtown area. Merry Christmas. Peggy Brownlee Quesnel

Editor: I would like to share with you my journey into recovery. I am 29 years old and a single mom of two beautiful children. Ten months ago, I was living a life of chaos and destruction. I would lie, cheat, steal and sell my body and soul for drugs. I was horrified by life, trying to escape by all means possible. I had lost everyone and everything that I loved. March 19, my mother and I drove to the WelcomeHome Addiction Recovery program in Vancouver. This was it. Life or death, I had a choice to make. It was one of the hardest decisions I

ever had to make. WelcomeHome is helping me change my life. I am learning all the tools I need to become the best person I can be for myself, for my family and for my community. I am learning to be a leader, a mother, a sister, a friend and so much more. If you know of anyone struggling who needs help and support getting their life back, please let them know there is another way. WelcomeHome saved my life and we might be able to help someone else do the same. –KD

God’s mission

I

got involved in a search and rescue mission a few years ago near Nazko. Not long after a major forest fire an elderly woman went missing in the forest near her ranch. It was cold at night and we were all worried. When I got to the ranch, hundreds of people had gathered. Some searched on horseback, some on ATV and some prepared food for everyone else. A trained search and rescue team gathered others, including me, to scour a nearby forest still smoldering from the fire. That experience reminded me of God’s search and rescue mission. It was planned for generations but was launched about 2000 years ago. We celebrate that launch Jon Bell-Wyminga at Christmas. An angel Presbyterian Church appeared to a man named Joseph in a dream, encouraged him to take Mary as his wife and said, “she will have a son and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins” (Matthew 1:21, NLT). The name Jesus means “The Lord is Salvation.” The word sin means “to miss the mark.” That means Jesus came to save us from all the ways we “miss the mark.” I bet we can all admit to missing the mark, no matter what moral standard we use. We often see the devastating consequences in our lives, families, communities and world. Sadly, the search and rescue mission near Nazko ended in grief. The woman we were searching for was eventually discovered, but she had not survived. On the other hand God’s search and rescue mission promises to end not in death, but in complete victory over death. When Jesus was born he was laid in a wooden manger, when he died he was nailed to a wooden cross, but the story doesn’t end there. The Bible says, “He was handed over to die because of our sins, and he was raised to life to make us right with God” (Romans 4:25, NLT). Jon Wyminga is pastor of the Cariboo Presbyterian Church in Nazko.

ne result of the changing climate we live in is that as soon as one forest pest dies out (through lack of pine trees for food) another starts multiplying and controlling it calls for a whole new approach – spraying – as shown in the picture. The operator of the supply truck, Ray Herbert, left his ranch east of Lloydminister, Saskatchewan, to service and supply helicopters doing the spraying in the Quesnel area. The truck, an exarmy 6X6, carries enough insecticide to spray a large area. The choppers land on the small pad on the

Any drop of insecticide, while filling, is caught by the tank on the truck, thus eliminating the danger of affecting other areas. Santa’s lost weight this year Santa took up cross-country skiing and dropped by the Jackrabbits session Monday evening to greet the kids. The skiing seems to have taken it’s toll on Saint Nick’s belly as the bowl full of jelly wasn’t in attendance that night. That didn’t affect Santa’s jolliness however, as he was preceded by jingling bells and his own prodigious Ho Ho Ho, alerting the children and drawing the young ones on their skis and in their boots, even garnering a hug from a particularly friendly child.

‘Mayhem’ takes the Rumble JONAS GAGNON Observer Reporter Dan (Mayhem) Mott, a local 2 Rivers boxer, took the unanimous decision in the 'Fight of the Night' in last weekend's Rumble. The Bouchie Lake Community Hall and the 2 River Boxing Club played host boxers from all around B.C., filling the card with ten bouts, seven of which featured local pugilists. Mott took the Kelly Mooney Award, the prize for the bout of the night. The bout, originally intended to be the main event, was moved forward because his club wanted to leave before the final bout. Mott went three full rounds against Dane Newell, from Shaolin Boxing Club, the fighter from Prince George, taking the match on a unanimous decision at the end of the three rounds.

Both Wally Doern, the trainer at 2 Rivers, and Mott were happy with the fight. "The bout was great; it went perfect for me," said Mott. The two had decided to settle down in the ring after a series of los ses convinced them to change their game plan. The new plan, choosing punches more carefully and being more cautious in the ring, paid off. "This time we knew he had to settle down and pick his punches for points; that was the key to his success. He was patient. He stalked his opponent and every shot Dan made was good in the judges eyes," Doern said. Dalton Starr and Isovani Torres, from Revelstoke, were the youngest boxers on the card, both fighting in their first bout. Torres came out with the vigour of a seasoned boxer, getting down to action right away, which took Starr by surprise.

Starr got rocked, taking two eight counts before the bout was called in the first round in favour of Torres. "If we were ready for him, we probably would have been OK, but we weren't and Dalton certainly wasn't. He surprised Dalton and overwhelmed him," said Doern. The third, and final, real bout of the evening for the 2 Rivers club was a rematch between Joey (The Mechanic) McKerricher and Jason Weiss, from Salmon Arm Bulldogs. Last time they met, the result was the same, but McKerricher was optimistic that with his training and a well thought-out plan, he would be able to stand up to Weiss. Weiss had been hitting the gym hard as well and came out stronger than in their last match. "He took a couple eight counts and just couldn't hold up to the punching power of Jason Weiss," Doern said.

Jonas Gagnon photo

In the only full bout without a Quesnel boxer, Brian Adkins knocked out Jon Obuson in the first round. With four competition bouts, three of which featured Quesnel boxers, the night featured the least full bouts that Doern had ever had in a rumble. The exhibition matches made up for the lack of full bouts with Canadian Champions Jag Seehra and Kenny Lolly putting on a good show with two Quesnel boxers, Matt (Cowboy) O'Flynn and Haven (Sugar Train) Gillimare respectively. 2 Rivers’ boxers Daryl Petsul and Eric Dick fought an exhibition round, with Erin Dale, the only other 2 Rivers Boxer on the card, in her own exhibition round, the only female match of the night. The club is currently looking for a new home and hopes to bring the bouts back into the community for their April 13 Rumble #18.

Golden Cariboots

Special menus available. Our NEW Vegan and Gluten FREE items are all made in house.

JONAS GAGNON Observer Reporter The Quesnel Figure skating Club took a handful of firsts in the recent Cariboots ‘n’ Blades event in Williams Lake. Cassandra Greenwood took first place in the Jr. Ladies Silver freeskate singles and the Gold Interpretive. Carmen Huang took first in Sr. Silver Ladies freeskate singles. Selena Van Aert also stood atop the podium for Gold Ladies freeskate singles. Jo-Ann Nadalin, the girls’ coach, said Van Aert had improved her score the most in the tournament. “She scored the highest in the program with a perfect level four on her first spin, which is impressive,” Nadalin said. Greenwood, gambling a little with a new performance that had her stepping outside her comfort zone, drew in the audience, Nadalin said. “I really put a lot more feeling into the performance,” Greenwood said. Rounding out the top tier standers, Carmen Huang was happy with her skate, citing a general improvement in her skate, including her jumps and ‘movement.’ “I’m holding the moves longer with certain poses so the judges can see them,” she said. The girls put up huge points to assist them in their pursuit of the Pond to Podium Super Series provincial standings. The club brought a full compliment of skaters to the event, all of which represented the club well, Nadalin said. Besides the skaters, Olivia Marleau sat rink side at Williams Lake, learning the ins and outs of judging. It’s a choice that Nadalin is happy to see in a young skater, as the judges are all volunteer and can be hard to come by. For Marleau, the choice was made by her desire to keep active in the skating community after she graduates from skating with the club. “In 20 years when I’m not skating, judging is a good way to keep in the sport,” she said.

The Figure Skating Club show off their medals.

n a game that should have been a laugher, the Fab Five players that donned their skates for BCS turned in a performance for the ages that collapsed less than a second short of the Fat Lady singing. Even Tiny Tim couldn’t fathom the game’s outcome as Bear, splendid in their Candy Cane striped unis, seemed to be playing cat and mouse with Blue Collar thanks to an offensive assault by Scott (Lady Byng) Fairless who flashed his brilliance on two tallies. Enjoying what looked to be a romp was Chad (Comet) Swanson, Dan (Dasher) Lowndes and Grant (Prancer) Johannesen who all scored from point blank range. It was not so fast my furry friend as Bear turned down their intensity and were overrun by a Blue Collar flurry of chances. A rebound tally by Nathan (Nuclear) Strand and a blue line slapper by Derek (Dancer) Burdikin kept BCS within hailing distance, allowing the Miracle to unfold as Bear had sugar plums dancing in their heads. A gorgeous one timer from Colin (Quick) Keis followed by a breakaway beauty from Kevin (Nightrider) Hesslegrave caught the Bears attention Steve Dodge and a power play PAPERBACK WRITER mesh rippler that tied the game off the stick of Brody (Blitzen) Neighbour definitely woke up the slumbering Bears. With time winding down and Blue Collar scurrying for an improbable victory, the clock struck midnight on the Black Cinderella Story, as Scott (Lady Byng) Fairless lofted the puck from deep in his zone over top of the Fab Five and onto the stick of Scott (Scrooge) Davis who coolly skated in on a clear-cut breakaway. With the Bear bench yelling for (Scrooge) to take a shot, he gave a quick head fake and then skewered the Blackhearts as the vulcanized rubber slipped over the line with a tenth of a second on the clock to make the final 6-5 as Wooville fell silent. The other contest was also a nail biter as the Chevy Crew used an extra couple of minutes to their advantage to snap the Builders 1 game winning streak, 4-3. The fast paced game was arguably the best contest of the year for both squads as Serenity was lead by Lee (Mickey Mouse) Naeth and Rob (Leprechaun) Lentz who both scored singletons while adding an assist. A trio of Motormen used their turbochargers to good use as Shane (The Pain) Thon and Jarett (Domino) Dumas put the biscuit in the basket and drew assists but it was Ian (Heartbreaker) Hannah who ruthlessly dashed Serenity’s hopes as he scored the tying and winning goals for Fraser Rivers 10th victory of the season.

Cariboo Critters Christmas

Through it all, magic prevailed for Santa and his team This is the final installment of Cariboo Critters Christmas.

R

osy red now, sipping cocoa with the elves, their feet in pans of hot water, Santa and Mrs. Claus seemed calm in the midst of the shambles that Christmas seemed to have fallen into. You, dear reader, may think them irresponsible, they are after all the ones that Christmas and millions of children the world over depend on for the explosion of warm feeling and colour in the middle of a long monochromatic winter season. And things like that are very important for the well-being of peoples and cultures the world over. They, however, have a deeper knowledge of that unruly North Pole magic and knew what they were doing when they shrugged their shoulders upon getting hit by a snowbank from a trebuchet which turned into a whirling dervish of snowballs. So instead of tensing

their shoulders setting their face like flint against a psychic storm of tension until veins stood out from their foreheads, they sat with the rosy elves and drank cocoa. The reindeers gathered in the stable, a building less like a stable and more like a log cabin designed around the needs of fourlegged creatures who need more than your average amount of headroom and ate their oats and apples and drank whatever hot drinks reindeers drink. They had forgotten the story they had told the moose about Santa and the disaster that was stalking Christmas in the flurry of the snowball fight. The mechanics had also forgotten about the mess everything was in, the suspension hadn’t been properly crash tested even and were drinking their cocoa just like all the other elves. The feeling, the ones that come creeping up the spine like the opposite of snow falling from a tree and sneaking under your

collar and down your back and then sit there, the feelings, in the back of your brain giving you brain freeze – that kind of feeling – was beginning it’s ascent up their backs, but the cocoa masked the slow freeze so their brains couldn’t quite process the spreading cold but documented it none-the-less. Those elves were getting a little restless. Mrs. Claus, seeing the restlessness of the elves, came over with a plate or pepparkakors (a delicious cookie popular North of the arctic circle, as well as the more southern portions of Scandinavia, particularly Sweden) and sat down with them. “How’s the wife?” she asked an elf with greasy hands and rosy cheeks. “Well, you know… she gets annoyed around Christmas because we never see each other.” Mrs. Claus nodded her head and watched the icy feeling begin to melt and drip off his back into a pool of melted icy feeling below his chair. But Christmas was com-

ing, bearing down second by second and the calm could not last. Slowly elves started to all shift their weight and tap their toes and jiggle their legs so that other elves near them would look at them and tell them to ‘stop shaking your leg, you’re going to make me spill my cocoa.’ One of the elves, her legs shaking, got up and went over to Mrs. Claus and said to her, “the magic’s not working this year, I heard. We’re having troubles in the workshop.” Those words work the anxiety of the group and suddenly the pointy ears of the elves were pricked up and swivelled in the direction of Mrs. Claus. Thats when the elves noticed Santa had slipped out of the room somewhere when the rest of the elves had been focused on cocoa and candy canes. “Where’s Santa?” a young elf asked. “Don’t worry about Santa,” said Mrs. Claus. We’re doing our part having a snowball fight

and drinking our cocoa together, enjoying each others’ company. There’s nothing better than gathering around a crackling fire while the snow falls to get Christmas back on track. I’ve even put a couple chestnuts to roast above the fire. Christmas will be fine, but Santa needs to play his part as well.” “And what’s Santa’s part?” Mrs. Claus cocked her head and smiled at the young elf. “Concentrate on enjoying your cocoa and your family. The magic is a mysterious thing.” Then she followed her words by taking a sip of her cocoa and smiling wide, before turning to an elf near her and inquiring about Christmas baking. Santa slipped in later, as the elves slept with Mrs. Claus looking over them, a hot drink in her hand. “Care for a hot toddy?” she asks Santa. Santa took the drink with a smile and sipped. “Care to help me load the sleigh?” he asked after

a sip. “Of course.” The two walked out of the building arm and arm to load the sleigh with the presents, even the ones they didn’t know they needed because Judy down in Arizona got the letter addressed to Santa. And that Christmas it wasn’t Santa and the elves on the sleigh; it was the Mr. and Mrs. doing the rounds, arm in arm, snuggling close to keep warm. The reindeers didn’t notice a difference in the speed of the sleigh, but did notice how much nicer it landed with the new suspension. And when they flew over the Cariboo, all the animals looked up in disbelief and ran home to find presents under their snow-laden trees. And when they asked the moose what happened, the moose would shrug his big shoulders and say one word – the word passed from reindeer to moose to moose to moose to moose, with maybe a couple deer carrying the message as well: magic.

This Christmas spend time on the things that truly matter

Favourite gifts over the years TREYTON MERO Grade 2-Dragon Lake One Christmas I was so excited. I ran downstairs and I looked under the tree and I saw presents. I opened the presents. One of them was a water gun. It looked like Spiderman. It is read and blue. It is big and it is cool. It has gloves and a mask. It shoots water. I really like this present because I can shoot water at my brother. ALEXA MACTAVISH Grade 2 - Dragon Lake I am a figure skater so this Christmas I am asking Santa for a figure skating dress. I want it to be sparkly and I want diamonds on it. I like it because I can skate in it. I hope it is pretty and if I get it I will be excited. I will like it

because I am a figure skater. EMMIT GIESBRECHT Grade 2 -Dragon Lake I was still tired and hungry but it was time to open presents. When it was my turn to get my present my mom and dad brought it into the room. Then I opened the box and in the box there was hockey gear. It had a big bag. It had white and red shoulder pads and a helmet too. I can put my black and green, size 13 skates in it. It was exactly what I asked for. HAILEE IRELAND Grade 2 - Dragon Lake One Christmas I was so excited to get my mom’s laptop. It is black and gray and it is medium sized. It has lots of

games and my favourite game to play is friv4school. I can only play on it, if it has a board under it. My laptop is really special to me. I am going to get a decoration for it. TAYLOR MCINTYRE Grade 2 - Dragon Lake One Christmas I really wanted a drum set. I ran downstairs, looked under the tree and I saw a really big present with wrapping paper on it. I opened it up and yelled, “Yay!” I ran to my dad and said thank you, thank you! The drums are big and noisy. I really like them because my dad got them for me. They’re really fun. I play them every day. I use them downstairs. It has a base drum and a really noisy drum and a bongo drum. My drum set is really special.

Christmas is a time for family and friends. One of the lessons I’ve learned over the years is that true wealth lies in those things we often take for granted: family, friends and community. I wish for all of us a season of love and laughter, moments and memories that will sustain us throughout the coming year. Christmas is a time for giving. Giving of one’s self is the ultimate form of generosity. We often get so caught up in the momentum of life we lose sight of the fact that time is the greatest gift we can give to ourselves and to one another. Time to listen, to share a laugh or a tear, to lend a helping hand or to simply be still and reflect on how little we really need to experience real through our relationships. New Year is a time for reflection. We live in interesting and challenging times. Now, more than ever, we need to reflect on our relationships with one another and the planet we share. We must stop consuming and become better stewards of this place we call home. With a little thought, some effort, and a commitment to act, together we can make the positive changes which will allow us to create a truly sustainable future. Have a safe and joyful season, full of the riches of fellowship and family. Sincerely,

Bob Simpson MLA, Cariboo North

One Christmas I ran to my mom and dad’s room and woke them up and mom yelled, “What! What! What is the matter?” “It’s Christmas!” I yelled. Mom said, “Can’t I get some sleep here?” “Fine”, I said. “Ugh!” I said. “Maybe I could open just one,” I whispered sneakily but first I asked. Mom said I could but just one. It was a Kid’s Christmas Cookbook. It had doodles on the cover. There were pictures of cookies inside, and a gingerbread house. There were pretty cupcakes, decorations and lots of sweets to copy out off of it. There were a whole bunch of presents under the Christmas tree but I loved the first present I opened.

Best Christmas gifts LAURA BALKWILL Grade 2 - Dragon Lake Mommy had just tucked me into bed after a long day of skiing and a busy night of getting ready for Santa Claus. Graham had said that he would stay up and see Santa but I didn’t believe him. I listened for Santa, but all I could hear was the clatter of mommy doing dishes and the strange noise of Daddy moving our chairs over to the entrance of the kitchen so my dog Bailey could not eat the cookies for Santa. I knocked on the metal showOWEN ROSSMANN Grade 2 - Dragon Lake One Christmas I got the best present ever. I got a water gun.

er. We were at our ski cabin so there was no running water. “Graham,” I whispered. “Santa’s not here!” “He will come soon,” Graham whispered back. Finally we fell asleep. Meanwhile, someone came tiptoeing in, as the reindeer waited anxiously at the door. All of a sudden I opened my eyes. “Christmas!” I squealed opening my door. Graham was already up, climbing down the ladder of the bunk bed. I raced into the kitchen. My eyes got very wide at the big

present under the tree. I ripped it open. “What’s this?” I asked excitedly. Beside me Graham was opening his present. “Froggy Pillow!” he exclaimed. I looked at mine. It had big eyes, a pink weird shaped body with a piggy nose. It was very soft. “Piggy Pillow!” I yelled giving it a hug. Every time I went to the ski cabin I played with it. And now I am seven and it’s still my very favourite stuffie there.

It is red, blue and green. It shoots water. You have to pull the lever back then push it forward to make it work.

I play with it in the spring and summertime. My water gun is pretty big. I like it because it can shoot cold water and warm water.

Santa’s great escape

HAPPY HOLIDAYS

JESSICA RICKETTS Grade 5 - Wells/Barkerville On the night of Dec. 23 Santa and all the elves were making the last minute toys. Santa was so exhausted he went right to bed. The next morning Santa was already packing all of the toys into the sleigh and the elves helped. Santa was ready just in time to go. First he went to Europe then Asia, that took a very long time then North and South America. Then he went to Canada, B.C. Tumbler Ridge and the worst thing possible happened to Santa. At the very last house he got stuck in the chimney. He couldn’t even deliver the presents. Then he heard little footsteps from below and a little voice that said “Santa?” Santa asked what sounded like to the boy as help. The child managed to pull Santa through to deliver the presents. Santa was very nervous but he knew what to do. He remembered his forget-me powder. He tossed some in the little boy’s face. All of a sudden Santa bolted out the door and went home. The next morning the little boy ran downstairs, the first present he opened was one that no other kid in the world had got. He got a tin of Mrs. Clause’s cookies and a letter from Santa.

Favourite Christmas memory ROSHINI DWIVEDI Grade 3 - Riverview My favourite Christmas memory is the time I got to pick the tree. I remember the tree because it was my favourite. It was the white tree with glitter on it.

Mom said she will meet dad and me in the cafe after she buys presents. We went to the store and my dad said I could choose the tree. I was so excited! I saw it! It was there! I ran to the tree and said “This is the one!”

Wishing you

“I love it!” We bought the tree. This was the best Christmas ever. Merry Christmas! LIAM INSCHO Grade 3 - Riverview My favourite Christmas memory is when I got a pocket knife for

Christmas in 2010. I even got a remote controlled truck for Christmas. I love to watch my family open presents. Every year I get a stocking full of treats. I eat most of my treats on Christmas day. I love Christmas!

Best Christmas with family and friends QUINN Grade 4 - Wells/Barkerville Two years ago I had the best Christmas ever. I can’t remember the whole story but I can remember some of it. It was 2010 when I had the best Christmas ever. All the houses had green, red, yellow and blue lights on them. All the Christmas trees were

sparkling with decorations such as bulbs, lights, garlands and popcorn and cranberries on a string. But the last and most beautiful decoration on the tree was the glowing gold star on top. The night sky on Christmas Eve was like nothing you could ever imagine. Then that same night I heard 2,463 bells on Santa’s reindeer and sleigh. On Christmas

Many Merry Moments and more

That’s our wish for you this holiday season. Thanks so much for your patronage and see you again next year.

morning my stocking was overflowed with toys, candy and a tooth brush to wash all the sugar off my teeth once I’ve eat all of it. Then my family and I opened gifts. One of the nine gifts I received were some pyjamas for my grandma. Why it was the best Christmas ever is because I got to hang out with family and friends.

Merry Christmas!

And many thanks for another great year. We appreciate your business and wish you all the best in the New Year.

From all of us at the North Cariboo Growers Co-op May the spirit of Christmas bring you peace, The gladness of Christmas give you hope, And the warmth of Christmas grant you With many blessings. 1280 Quesnel Hixon Rd. Quesnel • 250-992-7274

The cost of disbelief DUNCAN MACDONALD Grade 4 - Wells/Barkerville I knew a little boy who did not believe in Santa and he thought his parents get all the stuff on his list. That night he thought of ways that he could prove Santa was not real. He thought maybe if I find all the wrapping paper in the house and compare it to the wrapping paper on the presents

KAITLYN BROWN Grade 6 - Ecole Baker

and if it’s the same, I am right. Nah not enough proof. Then he got it. He would be super naughty for the rest of the year and if he got everything he wanted Santa wasn’t real. He waited until Christmas and he was naughty all that time. He even stole Santa’s cookies and milk. That year he got nothing he wanted and found out Santa was real.

Happy Holidays

The saga of the tootall Christmas tree CAITLIN Grade 7 - Well/Barkerville The Christmas started out okay and rapidly got worse and worse until it ended wonderfully. The first thing to go wrong was the tree size. The tree was tall and wouldn’t fit, they had to chop a bit off the top. Unfortunately, they were terrible at estimating and ended up cutting the tree

in half. The tree wouldn’t have looked so bad if they had kept the top half instead of the bottom half. While they were decorating the tree, one of the lights broke and lit the tree on fire. Luckily only the needles on the tree burnt. They didn’t throw the tree away or get a new tree as the others might have done, they just kept decorating the Christmas tree. The tree was no longer ugly, It was unique.

A train woke us up

CHASE Grade 3 - Riverview My favourite Christmas memory is the day that my family was woken up by a toy train. I remember this because the train woke me up. At first I thought it was

a dream so I went to the front room and noticed it was real. The train was hooked together and the train was on and the track was set up to! That is my favourite Christmas memory.
