Snow day: schools open, traffic snarled By Sarah Payne THE TRI-CITY NEWS
Kids dreaming of a white Christmas woke up to a winter wonderland Tuesday morning, but for commuters the white stuff wasn’t such a welcome treat. It was slow going on slippery side streets that hadn’t been plowed and even Port Moody’s St. Johns Street resembled a parking lot. Drivers reported commutes that usually take 20 minutes were stretching out to well over an hour. One northeast Coquitlam resident said it took her husband an hour just to make it as far as the Ikea store. see RESIDENTS, page 13

M i s s i n g Wo m e n Inquiry commissioner Wally Oppal is calling on the province to create a Greater Vancouver police force after concluding a badly co-ordinated police response was a key underlying factor that let Port Coquitlam serial killer Robert Pickton keep murdering women for years after he should have been caught.
The former attorneygeneral, in his fourvolume report titled “Forsaken,” says fragmentation of policing in the Lower Mainland led to multiple police failures, including uncoordinated parallel investigations and the failure to share key evidence. He recommends an expert panel develop a proposed new regional policing model and implementation plan. “It is clear from the evidence that a regional police force stood a good chance of apprehending Robert Pickton much earlier,” Oppal said, noting the Lower Mainland

See story, page 8 is the only major centre in Canada without a regional force. The patchwork of municipal police and RCMP detachments in the region came into stark focus during the inquiry as Vancouver Police took the view no crimes were committed in their jurisdiction be-
cause Pickton’s farm was in Port Coquitlam, which is policed by Coquitlam RCMP. “The missing and murdered women were forsaken twice,” he said in the report, “once by society at large and again by the police.” see SYSTEMIC, page 3

Tess and dad Jason Young (above left) and her brother Morgan (above centre) engage in a snowball fight while out for a walk on Coast Meridian in Coquitlam. Nyla Ganske, four, builds a snowman at her home on Burke Mountain. Tuesday’s overnight snowfall quickly changed to rain but Environment Canada meteorologists were predicting another, larger snowfall overnight Wednesday.
‘Systemic and blatant policing failures’ continued from front page Metro Vancouver mayors have repeatedly dismissed talk of a regional force in the past, citing concern over loss of local control or officers pulled away to regional duties. “A decisive step must be taken to break this impasse,” Oppal said, adding he does not recommend “yet another study” on the feasibility of the idea. The 1,450-page report contains more than 60 other recommendations. The inquiry found the missing women investigation was underfunded because the case didn’t get the priority it deserved. And among its suggested measures for reconciliation and healing, Oppal calls on the province to set up a compensation fund for children of missing and murdered women, and a healing fund for families. Oppal also cited an “absence of leadership,” with no senior officers at the Vancouver Police Department or RCMP taking ongoing responsibility for the case. The inquiry heard senior VPD officers resisted the theory that a serial killer was preying on women in

Oppal said Pickton should have been a strong suspect for police after the early 1997 knife fight at his PoCo property where a prostitute escaped and “died twice on the operating table” before doctors resuscitated her. She told RCMP officers
in hospital that Pickton was picking up women regularly and she believed they were vanishing at the farm. Prosecutors later dropped an attempted murder charge against Pickton after deciding the victim, an addict, wasn’t reliable enough to testify.
Nineteen more women went missing after the 1997 incident and Oppal said the VPD was far too slow to warn sex trade workers a serial killer was likely in their midst. As for the RCMP, the Mounties never took Pickton up on his offer to let them search the farm. Oppal said another “colossal failure” happened in 1998 when Mounties “remarkably” agreed not to interview Pickton for months after his brother said it would be better for the farm to wait for the rainy season. In 2001, Mounties also dismissed the advice of an RCMP summer student who wrote a paper suggesting a serial killer was to blame. In early 2002, Pickton was finally arrested after a rookie RCMP officer executing a search warrant to look for guns found underwear and women’s IDs linked to the missing women. “Pickton wasn’t even attempting to make any attempt to hide the fruits of his violent acts,” Oppal said. “It was there for anybody to see.” Pickton was convicted on six counts of second-
degree murder, although the DNA or remains of 33 women were found on the farm and he boasted to an undercover officer that he had killed 49 women. Many family members hoped the inquiry might be a chance for justice for the other victims for whom charges were never laid. Charges in 20 other deaths were stayed after the initial six convictions resulted in Pickton’s life sentence and charges were never laid in still more cases. Police indifference amounted to “systemic bias” against vulnerable women, Oppal found. “They were treated as throwaways — unstable, unreliable,” he said, adding they would “obviously” have received different police treatment had the missing women been middle class and from Vancouver’s prosperous west side, and asking, “Can we legitimately say that this is one of the great cities of the world when we have a Downtown Eastside in the condition that exists today?” The inquiry was boycotted by most organizations representing vulnerable women and First Nations, many arguing the process
was biased against them because of the heavy presence of lawyers defending police witnesses. Oppal handed down his findings at a news conference where he was heckled by some of those critics and was forced to pause for bursts of singing and drumming. But he urged critics of the process to come together if change is to happen. B.C. Justice Minister Shirley Bond appointed former lieutenant-governor Steven Point as “champion” to be a catalyst for change based on Oppal’s recommendations. “Make no mistake about it, there were systemic and blatant police failures,” Bond said in accepting his findings. But on the concept of a regional force, Bond would only say she would “seriously” consider it and explore the idea with municipal leaders if a review determines that integrated policing units — such as the Integrated Homicide Investigation team — are not adequate. She noted a new 20-year RCMP contract is in place but added there is an optout clause. Cameron Ward, lawyer
for many of the families of Pickton’s victims, said he believes Oppal’s inquiry could have been more thorough in uncovering why the police failures happened. But he credited the “strong findings” against police lapses and the recommended fund for children of Pickton’s victims. Ernie Crey, brother of murdered woman Dawn Crey, said he supports Oppal’s recommendations and particularly Bond’s choice of fellow Sto:lo leader Point. “This was a day that exceeded my expectations,”he said.“I’m happy with everything I’ve heard.” Marilyn Renter, the Chilliwack step-mom of Pickton victim Cindy Feliks, also praised Oppal, saying, “I think he did very well. It’s his legacy.” Wayne Leng, friend of murder victim Sarah de Vries, said Oppal “nailed the police”and he“could see in his face that he cared.” Union of BC Indian Chiefs Grand Chief Stewart Philip said the entire inquiry was flawed and biased because aboriginal and women’s groups were denied funding, adding an inquiry is needed into the inquiry. jnagel@blackpress.ca

There will be three more regional district directors for MetroVancouver taxpayers to support in 2013. Extra directors were named last Friday — at the same meeting, Port Coquitlam Mayor Greg Moore was returned by acclamation as Metro board chair — and the number of votes allocated to each municipality was also adjusted based on population counts from the 2011 census. Fast-growing Surrey got a fifth Metro seat and appointed Coun. Barbara Steele while Vancouver got a seventh seat and named Coun. Kerry Jang, and Langley Township got a second seat, naming Coun. Bob Long. The increase boosts the total number of Metro directors from 37 to 40, including two from Abbotsford who vote only on regional parks matters. Also changed are the number of votes each director wields. Cities get one weighted vote for every 20,000 people, so lone directors representing tiny Belcarra, White Rock or Bowen Island get just one vote at the board while the bigger cities have multiple directors with four or five votes each. Surrey’s five directors now hold a combined 24 votes (up from 20) to reflect the city’s population of 468,000 while Vancouver, with a more modest population gain to 605,000, gained two votes (from 29 to 31) split among its seven directors. The two biggest cities together now control 43% of the board votes. Five other cities gained a single additional vote each to reflect rising population: Burnaby’s three directors now have 12 votes, Richmond’s two directors have 10, Coquitlam’s two directors have seven votes, Langley Township has six and New Westminster’s lone director has four. Metro directors get paid $346 per board or committee meeting they attend — double that if it runs longer than four hours — plus other authorized travel costs, in addition to their regular pay as mayors or councillors for their own city. Typically, directors collect $10,000 to $20,000 a year from their Metro roles and taxpayers shelled out a total of $714,000 in meeting fees to directors in 2011. At Surrey’s request, Metro Vancouver has asked the province to allow it to adjust the board size and number of votes each year — using provincial population estimates — to better reflect rapid population changes rather than waiting five years for each new Census. jnagel@blackpress.ca

Tri-City comes through
The Tri-Cities heeded recent calls for help, enabling Share Family and Community Services to distribute 900 holiday food hampers to families in need today (Wednesday). Before last week’s food drive, Share spokesperson Katherine Lawrence was worried there wouldn’t be enough food to go around but after 5,279 pounds of food and $20,000 cash were dropped off at the Sunwood Square Safeway, her concerns were alleviated. Local schools also came to the rescue, with more than half the schools in the district dropping off food last week. And on Saturday, 600 pounds of food came in from a single group. “The food drive on Thursday will complete our hampers for this Christmas, we’re delighted about that,” Lawrence said, adding that food is still coming in and more is needed to fill hampers in January. In other good news, Share has been able to put grocery gift cards with larger denominations than in past years into hampers so families can buy what they need for the holidays. The value of the gift cards increased from $10 to $15 for small hampers, from $15 to $30 for medium hampers for a family of four, and from $20 to $40 for a family of five or more, thanks to donations, Lawrence said. Today is the second day of distribution of holiday hampers. The first 900 went out to registered recipients last Wednesday. In all, about 1,800 Tri-City families will get holiday hampers and about half of those benefitting from hampers are children. To help, visit www.sharesociety.ca dstrandberg@tricitynews.com

Boy, 16, charged Witnesses wanted, in guard assault jewelry box found Man needed 50 stitches after beating By Sarah Payne THE TRI-CITY NEWS
A 16-year-old boy has been charged in connection with the vicious beating of a 64-year-old security guard in October. Hoshiar Singh Bajwa, a Surrey resident, was patrolling a construction site just south of Pitt River middle school in Port Coquitlam on Oct. 14 when he was assaulted by a group of unknown people at about 3:30 a.m. Bajwa sustained head injuries and needed more than 50 stitches after the beating. Coquitlam RCMP Cpl. Jamie Chung said at the time that investigators were searching the area for any surveillance footage and that it didn’t appear anything was stolen from the construction site. About two weeks later, police released photos of two jackets they believed were associated with the assault. One was a green camouflage hoodie sweatshirt with an orange logo and the other was a black zippered Adidas jacket with red and white stripes up the arms. Police are still examining the evidence and are urging anyone with information to come forward. “No matter how trivial you think it is... it could be just the bit of information we need to bring those responsible to justice.” The 16-year-old has been charged with one count of aggravated assault. He can’t be named due to provisions of theYouth Criminal Justice Act. Anyone with information is asked to call Coquitlam RCMP at 604-945-1550 and quote file number 2012-28845 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800222-8477, or visit www.solvecrime.ca.
Coquitlam RCMP are looking for witnesses to a pedestrian collision on Sunday evening. A woman was in a crosswalk on Shaughnessy Street at 7:15 p.m. when she was hit by a vehicle. The driver checked on her to see if she needed help and another woman was also at the scene but the pedestrian can’t recall any details about the witness. The pedestrian managed to make her way to a friend’s house nearby and from there was taken to the hospital, where she was treated for non-life threatening injuries. “We would like to speak to those who witnessed the collision,” said Cpl. Jamie Chung, “in particular, the male driver so that we can get

4th time a charm?
PICTURE THIS adrian raeside
I
t’s not every day a city plans another city within its boundaries but that is essentially what’s happening with the Partington Creek neighbourhood plan now up for discussion in Coquitlam. This draft document is no small achievement in that it envisions 10,000 to 15,000 residents living in 600 acres on Burke Mountain as well as new schools, parks, a shopping hub and even, possibly, a cemetery. What’s more, this new plan envisions a multiplicity of housing options that can support the changing needs of individuals and families, and easy access to transit that is the hallmark of vibrant, liveable cities. That’s the good news. The bad news is that this is the latest of four Burke Mountain neighbourhood plans and council isn’t happy with how the previous three it approved have worked out. As reported last Friday in The Tri-City News, some councillors have said publicly the city’s vision for the Upper Hyde Creek, Lower Hyde Creek and Smiling Creek neighbourhoods hasn’t become reality. To quote the front-page story, councillors at a Dec. 10 meeting “cited the narrow streets, lack of parking — on street and at homes — and poor traffic patterns as among their biggest concerns with the mountain development.” Let’s get this straight: The city’s council members, only two of whom are rookies, have spent countless hours and tax dollars, and participated in dozens of votes, on the planning of this new community within a community but they don’t like the results? And whom do they suggest taxpayers blame? More importantly, how do they suggest they’re going to avoid being disappointed in the next plan that they will, again, approve? Now, it is understandable that some changes might take place as the plan is put into practice because early intentions can fall to changing market conditions. For example, the Newport Village originally envisioned and approved by Port Moody city council in the early 1990s underwent a number of substantial revisions (more storeys, less commercial space) before becoming the oft-copied complex seen today. But if Coquitlam council members want to ensure a welldesigned Partington Creek plan that is based on the best input from staff, expert consultants and residents becomes undiluted reality, then it’s up to them to make it happen — not to lament that it didn’t.
Premier Clark ponders black ink, red ink and oil BC VIEWS Tom Fletcher VICTORIA remier Christy Clark has completed the traditional round of year-end interviews with legislative press gallery reporters. Here are excerpts from my discussion with her, dealing with the Enbridge oil pipeline proposal and the balanced budget her government has promised to present in February.
P
Tom Fletcher: On the Enbridge project, are you getting the answers you want on safety? Premier Christy Clark: No, we’re not. We’ve set out our position. The five conditions need to be met, period. [B.C.’s conditions are “world-class” land and marine spill prevention and response, meeting legal obligations for aboriginal consultation, passing federal-provincial environmental assessment and a “fair share” of financial benefits.]
Clark: We need the oilpatch producers, the Alberta government and the federal government to come to the table. We’ve been cross-examining Enbridge. We have not been getting any of the answers that we hoped to get. We haven’t gained a lot of comfort from that process. And none of the other conditions are even close to being met. We are doing our own study of marine traffic. We want to understand the total number of ships that are out there plying our coast right now, because all of them have fuel in them, and some are cargo ships that are big enough to have enough [bunker] fuel as a mini-tanker would. Part of this is trying to understand where our level of Coast Guard protection needs to be today, in order to protect us should there be a spill from the existing traffic.
In my next column in the Dec. 24 edition, I’ll have highlights from my year-end interview with NDP leader Adrian Dix. Clark: It is going to be difficult to present a balanced budget but I think, because we’re going to build in some [forecast] allowance, as we always do, and because we’re going to be completely transparent about the assumptions that have led us there, and because we aren’t going to fiddle with any of the assumptions that we receive from the experts in the Ministry of Finance, it’s going to be quite clear that we have done it. We have come by a balanced budget honestly. So when it comes to natural gas, you know that the assumption we use in the budget is based on a fairly complex formula that the Ministry of Finance has relied on for probably a decade now. We don’t fiddle with that. There are those who would say we should artificially lower the [revenue projection] num-
Fletcher: Balancing the budget: The finance ministry’s current projections call for an upturn in natural gas royalties in the coming year. With the current glut of gas, isn’t that kind of far-fetched?

ber that we use. But if you artificially lower it, what’s to stand in the way of artificially raising it?You either accept the advice of your experts or you don’t. And they’re the experts, not the politicians. Fletcher: Right now we have a deficit gap of more than a billion dollars. Can that be closed without significant spending cuts or tax increases or both? Clark: You will see when we get to the budget. And it will be absolutely transparent how we got there. [Laughs] Nice try. Fletcher: If the BC Liberals form a government in May 2013, will the election date be changed so we don’t have to have this discussion about questionable spring election budgets? Clark: It’s not part of the plan today but I’m sure it’s a discussion we’ll have in the next four years. I know that people have talked about it. I’m open to it. I’m not wedded to this particular date.

Parking plans in PM don’t add up The Editor, Re. “Offices, not hotel rooms” (The Tri-City News, Dec. 14). Your article about Onni abandoning plans for a hotel in favour of an office building speaks to creating jobs and increasing economic development within Port Moody, which I support. Moreover, I couldn’t be in more support of creating car-sharing stalls and other initiatives that reduce pollution and facilitate a reduction in traffic. But there was a line in this article, which really threw me off: “Onni has

Residents must clear snow Parents, check radio & website With snow falling Tuesday morning and more expected overnight Wednesday,Tri-City parents are encouraged to listen to radio stations and check the School District 43 website for information about busing and possible school closures in inclement weather. District spokesperson Cheryl Quinton said the aim is to have information out by 7 a.m. so people can plan their days. Schools were kept open yesterday morning after early indications
were that the roads were passable and Quinton was urging parents to inform themselves of possible closures today (Wednesday) because of a snow fall warning for the Lower Mainland. Quinton advised parents to check www.sd43. bc.ca regularly or listen to CKNW AM 980 and CKWX AM 1130 for possible school closures. Tuesday’s snowfall, which clogged major routes and led to accidents throughout the region, slowed school buses in neighbourhoods
at higher elevations and the district suggested parents consider keeping their kids home for the day if they felt they couldn’t get to school safely. Quinton said the decision was made to keep schools open based on road and weather reports available before 7 a.m. Later in the morning, when the snow started falling more heavily in some areas, the situation worsened but by then the announcement had already gone out to keep schools open.

And while the snow promised to give way to warmer temperatures and rain by Tuesday afternoon, the forecast was calling for more snow overnight and heavy snowfall into Wednesday. There could even be more snow over the weekend. City crews were busy clearing roads, with Coquitlam staff out at 4 a.m. Tuesday to clear top priority routes for emergency and transit vehicles on collector, arterial and emergency routes. Later in the morning they were applying salt on roads where a slippery glaze had formed overnight due to hail. Port Moody reported six trucks and one backhoe were working to clear priority one routes Tuesday morning and were branching out to priority two and three roads in the afternoon. In Port Coquitlam, eight snow plows were out at 11 p.m. Monday to clear away ice and snow and were expected to start again at 3:30 a.m. Wednesday to prepare the streets with brine and sand in advance of a predicted snow fall. Coquitlam RCMP Cpl. Jamie Chung said between 4 a.m. and noon, police had already received eight traffic complaints ranging from accidents to vehicle roll-overs, cars stuck in the snow, “and, if you can believe it, vehicle speeding through school area.” Chung said drivers often run into trouble on flat stretches of roadway because they’re going too fast for the conditions, such as the vehicle that rolled over on Lougheed Highway, near Coquitlam Centre, at 4:30 a.m.Tuesday. “It’s at night, there’s no other vehicles around, it’s quiet, the vehicles tend to go faster and out of control,”Chung said. Police are warning drivers that conditions are expected to improve only marginally throughout the afternoon and are set to worsen by Wednesday morning. “If you don’t have to go out, don’t,” Chung said. “And if you must go out, please slow way down.” Coquitlam offered the following tips for Tri-City residents over the coming snowy days: • If you don’t have snow tires, stay off the roads. • Homeowners must clear sidewalks in front of their homes within 10 hours after the cessation of any snowfall. • Don’t shovel snow on to the street. Pile snow on the right side of the driveway as you face the road; in many cases this will reduce the amount of snow that gets pushed back onto your driveway from the snow plow. • Pedestrians should try to stay on the sidewalk. If it’s not accessible, walk on the left side of the road facing traffic, pay close attention and move as close to the sidewalk as possible. Heavy hearts reach across the continent A charity started by one grieving family offered support to many grieving families across the continent on the weekend. Volunteers with Charlene Reaveley Children’s Charity Society as well as family and friends met Sunday evening at the side of the road on Lougheed Highway in Coquitlam where Charlene Reaveley and Lorraine Cruz were killed. They gathered not to remember the two women but in support of the families in Newtown, Conn., where a school shooting left 26 people dead. The candles that have become, for drivers, familiar reminders of the deaths of Reaveley and Cruz were arranged to spell out: “26 FAMILIES WE (HEART) U.” Charlene Reaveley Children’s Charity Society is focused on helping families that suffer traumatic losses. It is running a charity toy drive and new toys can be dropped off until Friday at the Coquitlam and Port Coquitlam Canadian Tire stores; for more information, go to www.crccs.ca/events.
Red Nose drivers are busy More people than ever are calling Operation Red Nose to get home safely from festive events. On the weekend, the volunteer-based driving service provided 168 rides to Tri-City revellers, up from 140 over the corresponding weekend in 2011; another 19 rides were provided in New Westminster and 36 in Burnaby. Operation Red Nose co-ordinator Chris Wilson said after offering the service in Burnaby and New West for just six nights, volunteers have given 131 rides; in its first year of operation in the Tri-Cities, volunteers provided 107 rides over all nine nights. “We had some great support from the New West Police and their volunteers,” Wilson said. “We had 21 of them out on Saturday and it made a huge difference.” This Friday night, Burnaby Mayor Derek Corrigan as well as council members and city employees, will be driving people home. None of it would happen without the support of volunteers — and more are needed for New Year’s Eve, often the busiest night of the year. There’s still time to volunteer but anyone who might be interested is encouraged to act quickly, since the process can take some time. For those not interested in driving, the organization also needs help answering phones and dispatching. Operation Red Nose is a free, seasonal service organized by KidSport and the Rotary Club of Coquitlam Sunrise, in partnership with ICBC, that allows party-goers and their vehicles to get home safely. The service runs from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. over the next two weekends and New Year’s Eve. Anyone wanting a ride can call 778-8666673 (NOSE) during those hours; pre-booking is not available.

• Lady Lily, 76 years old, came to this clinic complaining of ten years of Migraine headaches. She tried to get help from her family doctor and was given a medication for two pills a day and now had taken a total of ten pills. Acupuncture treatment was done on her over five visits and now her symptoms are gone and she feels no more migraine headaches. • Mr. Daniel, an eighty one year old gentleman, who is living in Coquitlam was suffering from an enlarged prostate gland. This is a general phenomenon with older men. He suffers from frequent visits to the bathroom, mostly at night, sometimes up to ten times a night. After three visits to this clinic together with Chinese herbal medicine, he felt the symptom had gone and he doesn’t have the urgency to visit the bathroom as often. • P. Chew, 88 years old, was having Sciatica. He could walk, stand up and sleep alright, but couldn’t sit. If he did - the unbearable pain would almost paralyze him. Montgomery middle school students sold a wide variety of products at an entrepreneur fair Friday. Top: Morgan Lowe and Megan Lee sold beauty products they made. Hannah Hutchinson sold handmade Christmas cards and Maeghan Sheridan built locker shelves with her dad and sold them for $5. The fair took an entire semester to prepare for, with students making business plans, marketing and selling their products.
Monty students learn first-hand about business By Diane Strandberg The Tri-CiTy News
The spirit of entrepreneurship — and Christmas shopping — was alive and well at Montgomery middle school last Friday, where a mini-mall was set up in the gym so students could market and sell their own products. Approximately 120 students participated in the Dec. 14 Young Entrepreneur Fair, which was sponsored in part by Envision Financial. Teacher Gavin Hanna said students were encouraged to develop a product, write a business plan that included marketing, sales and profit analysis; they then they had to make the product and advertise it. The products were as individual and creative as the students, and included jewelry, nail art, bubble bath, shelves for lockers, designs for iPod and iPhone cases, Christmas ornaments, key chains and fridge magnets, among many other things. Start-up costs were generally covered by a loan from parents, which the students paid back after tallying up the

money at the end of the day. Hanna’s students also contributed 10% of their profits toward the SPCA. Students The Tri-City News interviewed said they learned a lot from the enterprise. Devon Hutchinson said sales of his beaded lizard key chains improved when he started talking to customers. “I was trying to draw people in instead of just waiting for them,” he said. In front of his display was a terrarium with plants and some of his beaded lizards. Some students showed videos on iPads or on an overhead screen
to advertise their products; some drew in customers with a good spiel while others conducted demonstrations. Posters were also placed on students’ lockers advertising the items. Mani Ebrahimi, who works at the Sunwood Square branch of Envision Financial, said he was pleased to support the project and talk to students about the importance of business fundamentals. And he came away pleasantly surprised at the creativity and entrepreneurship of students, saying, “I’m just amazed at their knowledge.”

The boys said they sold several Christmas ornaments, lizard key chains and paper magnets they made. Below right: Teacher Gavin Hanna counts out the float for Dakotah Pearson, who participated in the entrepreneur fair. Many of the students contributed 10% of their profits to the SPCA. Below left: Rai McKenzie with iPod case covers he made and sold. In all approximately 120 students in team Skye participated in the event.

Books for tasty season’s eatings A GOOD READ Sarah Dearman
C
hristmas is a week away and, if you’re like me, you’re looking forward to all of the fabulous food that accompanies the holiday season. Now is the time to get together with friends and family and share delicious meals and fabulous treats. Fortunately for B.C. residents, we have a wide array of talented chefs and authors who have written cookbooks full of scrumptious recipes for us to enjoy. What follows is a collection of my favourites; not only are they great for holiday feasts but they also make lovely Christmas gifts. If you’re from the Lower Mainland, chances are you’ve visited Granville Island Public Market. This Vancouver institution is full of fresh local produce, seafood and mouthwatering desserts from the many vendors. Now, longtime market owner-operators Judie Glick and Carol Jensson have released a new edition of their popular book, The New Granville Island Market Cookbook. This is a beautiful collection of creative recipes inspired by the market’s own produce and features colour photographs of their tasty
creations. Recipes such as mushroom-stuffed pastry and penne with spot prawns will inspire you in the kitchen and impress your holiday guests. Another popular local favourite is the Whitewater Cooks series by Shelley Adams. Adams is the former owner of Nelson’s Fresh Tracks Café at the Whitewater Ski Resort and has put together a great collection of her best loved recipes into her popular and critically acclaimed cookbooks. The author’s most recent release, Whitewater Cooks with Friends, is no exception. Entrees such as pulled pork enchiladas and whiskey smoked salmon chowder are not only absolutely delicious but unique as well. Another great element of this cookbook, and others in the series, is that the recipes are simple, easy and casual, with nothing overly gourmet or timeconsuming. Coupled with great colour photographs
and more than 70 mouthwatering recipes, it is a classic for the kitchen. If you’re looking for something slightly more adventurous, try Vancouver Cooks 2 by the Chef’s Table Society, a non-profit group featuring 150 of B.C.’s best chefs and culinary professionals who are passionate about regional food, local produce and great cuisine. The society recently put together a collection of delicious recipes from notable local chefs including Rob Feenie, Melissa Craig of Barefoot Bistro in Whistler and Tojo Hidekazu of Tojo’s. The book is divided into four sections: local food, international flavours, emerging talents
and pioneering chefs, giving aspiring chefs a wide variety of recipes to try. Finally, our friends on the beautiful Gulf Islands have always been passionate about delicious food and with family on Gabriola Island, I know first-hand about their thriving foodie culture. In Seasonings: Flavours of the Southern Gulf Islands, authors Andrea and David Spalding have crafted a pleasant collection of yummy island-style dishes using local contributors and regional ingredients that are popular on the southern Gulf Islands. The islands are famous for their lamb, wine and cheese, and this book has no shortage of these spe-
cialties. You’ll find recipes for brie and squash pizza, rosemary-crusted rack of lamb and chocolate lavender cake among many others that truly embody the island lifestyle. Now that your mouth is watering, come to the library and find a huge selection of cookbooks from all over the world on our shelves. Library staff are here to help, so feel free to ask us for more suggestions. Happy holidays and bon appetit. A Good Read is a column by Tri-City librarians that is published every Wednesday. Sarah Dearman works at Terry Fox Library in Port Coquitlam.

Teens and little buddies will be reading together Mondays, Jan. 14 to Feb. 25, from 3:45 to 4:30 p.m. • For parents: If you have a son or daughter in kindergarten to Grade 3 who would like to be a better reader, Reading Buddies is one way to get extra reading practice. The program is free and your child will have a chance to read with one of the teen volunteers in a supportive environment. Pick up an application form at the Terry Fox Library info desk. A new fine arts wing for Carney By Janis Warren

fter nearly a decade of fundraising, students and staff at Port Coquitlam’s Archbishop Carney regional secondary will see ground broken next month for a fine arts wing. But don’t expect the drama and visual arts classes to be included in the new building. That’s because the 6,200-square foot, two-storey structure isn’t big enough to house the 60 students in drama and visual arts divisions, principal Lorraine Paruzzolo said. Instead, the wing will be new digs for the 108 students in choir (vocal jazz, chamber, junior, senior and liturgy), the 88 band students (junior 1, junior 2, beginners’ concert, junior concert, senior concert and liturgy) and the dozens more in media arts (info tech junior, info tech senior, multimedia, music composition and music technology). “Forty per cent of our student body here at Carney is in at least one fine arts class,” Paruzzolo said of the 638 population,“and that’s a very high number for any school.” She credited fine arts department head Evelyn Young for making the Grade 8 to 12 school so arts dominant. In 1997, there were only seven choir students; Young started at Carney in
1999 “and she worked with the kids and look what we have today.” Music under the direction of Amy Stephens has also flourished despite the cramped conditions. Last year, the senior concert band, senior concert choir and senior vocal jazz ensembles took high marks at the Heritage Music Festival in San Diego, California. Paruzzolo praised the community for helping Carney raise the $2.1 million needed to build the new wing, which will start construction — just north of the school gym — on Jan. 4; it is expected to wrap up in August, before the start of the next academic year. Over the years, special collections have been taken at regional feeder Catholic parishes and schools and annual galas have been held. Last year’s event included auctioning off a signed electric guitar from Jon Bon Jovi. “We feel truly blessed by our community,”she said. Still, once the new wing is up, Paruzzolo said Carney has to launch another drive to furnish it with such items as risers, chairs and tables, computers and music stands. And once that’s complete, students and staff will start their final push to complete the development of the 19-year-old, eightacre school: The fourth phase calls for a sports clubhouse. jwarren@tricitynews.com
‘I have no regrets leaving a corporate job behind’ By Janis Warren The Tri-CiTy NeWs
Taped to the bottom of Greg Drummond’s computer monitor at home is a fake cheque he made out to himself for $100,000 with the signature:“It will happen!” “Hey, I’m a tenth of the way there,” the Port Moody resident said last week with a grin, referring to his $10,000 win for the Best of BC song contest in which the Shore 104.3 FM awarded him for his original Johnny
Cash-sounding track, titled Walking Man. Truth be known, the Port Moody secondary graduate had a cheque written out to himself about a year ago for $10,000, just after his debut album, also called Walking Man, came out but he rewrote it recently after scoring the radio station cash. The accolade has meant the world to him and is especially poignant given that Walking Man was penned the night before he quit and walked out the door from his corporate sales job to pursue music full-time
— a risk Drummond said he was confident would one day pay off. “Leaving that job was a big thing for me,” Drummond said, “but I knew I had made the right decision because afterwards it felt like a burden had been lifted from my shoulders.” “I have no regrets leaving a corporate job behind for music.” Trained in audio engineering at the Vancouver Film School and Douglas College, Drummond said he was ready to make the plunge into the non-structured — though
often financially struggling — arts lifestyle. His start, however, was a little bumpy. After quitting his employer in November 2010, Drummond wrote more songs for his first album and, while recording them in Port Coquitlam in May 2011, the studio burned to the ground. Luckily, he was able to salvage his music files and continue to mix them at home on his own recording gear. see dRummond, page 24

LOTS OF CHEER
Staff at The Tri-City News last Friday got an early Christmas present when Port Coquitlam liquor store employee Adam Turpin dropped by. The Nicola Avenue worker visited the newspaper to pick up a few copies of Friday’s edition, in which he was featured on page 3, and belted out White Christmas as his way of saying thanks. Reporter Sarah Payne wrote about Turpin, a classically trained bass baritone singer who likes to sing while he works at the provincial liquor store. Turpin will gradu-

Drummond living his dream continued from page 22
Since the album — 10 tracks of lovely storytelling through various genres, with a sound comparable to Mumford and Sons, Arcade Fire and Eddie Vedder — was released last September, Drummond said he’s been able to live on the sale proceeds as well as from gigs around Metro Vancouver as well as a B.C. and Alberta tour last winter. Still, clinching the monthly radio contest in November “has opened so many more doors for me,” Drummond said, noting the frequent play on 104.3 FM as well as the extra performances tied to the win have pushed things along faster.“It’s so nice to have the title. The attention is especially nice because I’ve worked so hard.” Last Fr i d ay, Drummond was part of the 12 Days of Christmas at the Fairmont Pacific Rim, a 104.3-sponsored event to raise donations for the Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society. And on Friday, Drummond and his band will play in front of a sell-out crowd of 1,100 people for the 11th annual Ugly Sweater Party at the Commodore Ballroom, another charitable benefit show. Next month, Drummond will tour Vancouver Island with Towers and Trees and, currently, he’s writing songs for his sophomore album. And then there are the results of another contest. Recently, Drummond’s Walking

Win one, lose one for Express Team struggles to put together an extended winning streak By Gary McKenna The Tri-CiTy News
The Coquitlam Express have had a tough time winning road games lately and Friday night was no different. The BCHL hockey club lost 8-3 to the Langley Rivermen at the Langley Events Centre, a drubbing that saw Express starting
goalie Cole Huggins pulled in the middle frame after letting in three goals on 21 shots. Backup netminder Daniel Urbani struggled the rest of the way, letting in five goals on 14 shots. Langley opened the scoring in the first two minutes with a power play goal from James Robinson. The Rivermen’s Mario Puskarich added a second goal before Coquitlam was able to score one of their own. see COQUITLAM, page 27

The club announced on Monday that Neil Doddridge will take over as head coach when the 2013 season begins, the first hiring by new general manager Tosh Nishimura. “We are very excited about coach Doddridge joining the junior Adanacs club,” he said in a press release. “His resume speaks for itself and we look forward to getting back to work preparing for the upcoming draft and season.” As a player Doddridge, who
hails from Clarkson, Ontario, won a Fo u n d e r s Cup championship with the Mississauga Tomahawks, two silver medals with Team Canada and seven Mann Cup Championships with Brampton, Six Nations and Victoria. After he retired from playing, Doddridge was worked as director of scouting for the National Lacrosse League’s Minnesota Swarm between 2006 and 2011. He has also worked in the Western Lacrosse Association with the senior A’s. The team has also hired Kevin Hill, who will join the club as a goalie coach and director of scouting. sports@tricitynews.com
