Langley’s Faith Community Christmas For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulders, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6 And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord Luke 2: 8-11

T

he Christmas season is one of the holiest times on the Christian Calendar. For the faith community the season begins with Advent which are the four Sundays leading up to Christmas. While Christians and people of faith exchange gifts and celebrate it is also a time to honour their Saviour. Langley’s churches work hard to demonstrate the love of Jesus Christ in practical ways throughout the year but at Christmas time an explosion of good will is seen that blesses the entire community. Brookswood Baptist Church At Brookswood Church there’s something for the whole family this Christmas. On December 21st the church will join with Southgate Church to offer a Christmas dinner to encourage the community to celebrate Christ’s birth. Doors are open at 6:00 p.m. On December 23rd the church will hold its Sunday service at 10:00 a.m. Christmas Carols will ring out as the congregation journeys through the Christmas story as found in the Gospels. On Christmas Eve a service at 6:00pm features Carols by Candle Light. It will be a wonderful time to celebrate the Light of the World in the darkness of winter. To welcome the new year, a Family Skate Night will be held on January 4th from 6 until 7 at the George Preston Centre. Brookswood Baptist Church is located at 20581 - 36 Avenue. Southgate Church The congregation at Southgate Church invites you to join them to celebrate the greatest gift that was given to all the world. This special presentation will be filled with the true Christmas story, carol singing and candle lighting. There will be both a Matinee on Sunday, December 23rd at 2:00 p.m. and then an evening presentation on Christmas Eve at 7:00 p.m. #120-5501-204 Street Telephone is 604-532-7769. North Langley Community Church is joining Christians around the world and taking part in a movement called the Advent Conspiracy. – a plan to take Christmas back from the consumer-crazed culture. Instead of buying more, getting more and consum-

ing more the members of the congregation have been challenged to find ways to spend less, give more, truly worship Jesus and have time to love others. For more information, Google the “Advent Conspiracy Promo Video” or check it out on U-Tube. The church will host three Christmas Eve Services at 3:30 pm, 5:00 and 6:30 pm. Everyone is welcome! North Langley Church is located at 21015 - 96 Avenue. Home Church Langley Home Church Langley celebrates Christmas by helping people internationally and locally. In November, the church participated in Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child. Members of the congregation were invited to pack one or more small shoeboxes with Christmas gifts for boys and girls in poor and troubled nations around the world. The church meets at Nicomekyl School and this year for Christmas has partnered with the school to purchase a new BBQ grill and a new coffee machine. The congregation will help the Langley Food bank with food hampers. Looking forward into the New Year, Home Church Langley will offer the Alpha series, Women Encouraging Women, New Christians class, Divorce care and many other small group options. For more information call Pastor Jim Moerman at 604-514-4663. Southridge Fellowship Baptist Church Southridge Fellowship Baptist church has been in Murrayville since 1996. Located at 22756 - 48 Avenue, church services are at 10:00 a.m. The regular church service will take place on Sunday, December 23rd and there will be an hour long traditional candlelight service on Christmas Eve at 6:00 p.m. St. Joseph’s Catholic Church For many in Langley it wouldn’t be Christmas without the annual Christmas Dinner held at St Joseph’s Catholic Church on Christmas Day. Since 1993, the congregation CONTINUED ON PAGE 4

T

his Holiday Season has been about giving back at the newly renovated Mr Mike’s Steakhouse Casual. On Thursday Dec. 6th, Mr Mike’s hosted a burger eating contest and raised $1,000 for the Langley Food

Bank. On a sadder note they once again will be giving back to hounor a member of the Mr Mike’s team who passed away suddenly last week. All day on Friday Dec. 21, Mr Mike’s will be donating 10 per cent off all food sales to the Langley School District Foundation towards the Elliott Franklin Memorial Scholarship. Classic Mike burgers are only $9.99. Cash donations are also accepted. Elliott Franklin worked at the Langley Mr Mike’s as a cook. Franklin’s family remembers him as exceptionally kind, caring, passionate and incredibly talented as an aspiring chef. Most of all, he was extremely humble, sensitive and giving. Elliott is graduate of Langley Fundamental School where he played in both the jazz band and concert band. Elliott was an avid curler and ranked as one of the top players in B.C. for his age. His post secondary pursuits included part-time study at Kwantlen Polytechnical University and hands-on culinary experience. Donations can be made to the Langley School District Foundation under the Elliott Franklin Memorial Scholarship. The team at Mr. Mike’s Steakhouse Casual is asking you to take a break from work or shopping and meet with friends and family for some delicious comfort food on Friday, Dec 21. Come enjoy a delicious burger and make a difference in a student’s life.

O

A Gift of Lights for Christmas

n November 1st. each year, the big wreath goes up on the front of the barn at Parallel Acres in Langley. For most folks that would be just fine and it would be time for coffee. But for the last ten years, the installation of the wreath signifies the start of six weeks of a labor of love that will see over 70,000 lights brighten up the farm at 232nd St and 0 Ave. “We stopped counting the lights around 50, 000,” explains Wendy, “but we know we’ve added some new displays each year. We start early in November and work rain or shine, setting up the displays and running miles of cords.” At the end of each season the lights are carefully coiled into more than 50 large plastic totes. “Each tote is marked,” says Lorence. “We know which set of lights goes on the hedge, others are marked ‘nutmeg tree’ or ‘laurel bush’ so we open the totes and start playing out the strings and attaching the lights to the displays.” Many of the figures were purchased over the years from the Country Christmas Store, some handmade and some commercially produced. “We have some unique ones as well,” says Wendy pointing to the two Santa saucers hovering just past the barn. “Lorence purchased a couple of large umbrellas from the Kamloops Water Park, inverted them and put them together and covered them with lights. We suspend them in the air and the kids really like them.” “Everyone that comes has their favorite, maybe the biker or the deer or the horse and the little kids enjoy finding all the different animals. My favorites are the Shooting stars and the Poinsettias.” Lorence just shrugs when you ask him the cost of putting this on each year. “We do it to give back to the community, we don’t consider how much it costs but we are smart shoppers and we’re always on the lookout for deals on lights and cords.” Lorence is not a fan of LED lights. “They have steel pins in the sockets and start to fade once they start to corrode. We have less than a thousand Led lights and the older

style lasts many times longer; we use them year after year. With any of the LED lights you can buy a new string of lights cheaper than you can buy replacement bulbs. But because they start to fade, the displays lose their color.” “Each year we replace some strings and we check the display each night for burned out bulbs or strings that have to go. We recycle all the old stuff. Mac’s Traders on Fraser Highway will take them, bulbs and all and treat them just like any other wire product. We use the recycling money to buy more lights.” The families start to arrive in early December but the big crowds arrive the week before Christmas once the kids are out of school. The sprawling lawns and fields invite the visitors to stroll quietly though a fairyland hand in hand or encourages children to run from scene to lighted scene discovering everything from Santa to the shepherds. “We get big crowds right up to Christmas Eve once school is out,” explains Wendy.”We love to listen to the kids as they discover something new as they’re running around. People often ask us why we go to all this work each year and we just like to share what we have with the community. We take donations every year for Juvenile Diabetes and we have raised close to $5000.00 over the past years. Last year we raised enough to purchase a diffusing pump for a young girl with diabetes.” “Each year we wonder if we’ll do it again. If we get a windy December or a big snowfall our workload increases and we think maybe this is the last year. Then November comes around and here we are again.” No doubt Santa uses the glow in the sky from their display to get his bearings as he crosses the border into Canada! Parallel Acres is a must for your Christmas Light tour. It is located on 0 Ave. at 232nd St. and the public is welcome from 5 PM to 9:30 PM, no dogs please. ~ Jim McGregor

Langley Times Christmas • Tuesday, December 18, 2012 • 9

t was 5:00 on December 24, time to turn out the lights. The steady stream of customers had slowed to a drip in the last two hours and now most people were at home, locked in their bedrooms wrapping up the last of the gifts. Shannon was ready to call it a day and close her little Christmas shop. Sure there are days when someone cranky crosses the threshold, but for the most part the customers she dealt with were cheerful and happy to be in her store. She smiled remembering the kind gentlemen who had come visiting on a weekly basis for the last two months. “How much for that Christmas tree over there, the one done in green, just as it is, all decked out and delivered?” She recalled her surprise that someone would even suggest such a thing! Doesn’t everyone want to do their own Christmas tree? “$800? I’ll take it! Will you please deliver it to my friend’s house and set it up just like it is here?” Turned out the man was terminally ill. “I am so grateful for the way my friends have been taking care of me, I would like to bring something beautiful into their home. I won’t be here next year to spend Christmas with them, so I want to make this one the best ever!” Every week the sick man was back with one friend or another, determined to treat them all to something beautiful before he left. More than just to his friends he brought happiness to the clerks who helped him as well. His cheerful attitude and kind words for everyone would brighten even the dreariest of days. Of course not everyone was so calm every time they came by. Some people opened the door with a great pull, and started walking quickly through the store. But the smell of the hot cider slowed them down immediately as they sniffed to find the source. A cup of cider and a cookie off the plate and suddenly their mood was transformed from frenzied to relaxed. One sip and suddenly they were sharing their own Christmas memories and chatting amicably with the clerks. For some Christmas is all about family, for others the group is much larger. The joy extends to children who are struggling with ill health. Just that morning Shannon had helped a lady with last minute decorations for her Christmas Eve benefit party for the Children’s Hospital. Together they had poured over the “sweet tree” section, selecting cupcakes and gingerbread men, candy canes and lollipops to create the perfect dessert tree. They laughed as though they were children themselves imagining the kids’ faces when they saw the tree. The excitement level was high this morning when a mother came in with her three young children. After they had availed themselves of the cookie plate, they decided a race was in order. Shannon’s little Christmas store is not designed for such events. The aisles at Christmastime are narrow and full of fragile poinsettias. But such an obstacle only improves the challenge and the two older boys lined up waiting for the shotgun start. Shannon watched apprehensively, wondering if she would have to clean up the carnage once the winner was declared. But before the shot was fired the mother grabbed the two boys by the waist and tucked them under her arms. “You can save the races for outside,” she told them sternly. “The rules are the same in the store as at home.” And before they could see the twinkle in her eye or the smirk on her face she set the repentant racers back on their feet. “If you behave yourselves we’ll ask the nice lady for some sparkles on our plants.” Even little boys can’t say no to glitter and they were so thrilled when the glue was sprayed and the gold sprinkled on their flowers. “Grandma is going to love these pretty flowers, isn’t she mom?” said one of the boys as they left the store. “I bet she’ll like mine the best!” exclaimed the other boy, while his cherubic-looking sister grabbed one more cookie on her way out. Shannon chuckled at the memory of the kids and was about to lock the door and wish her staff a merry Christmas when someone ran up and knocked on the window. “It’s after 5:00 on Christmas Eve and you still have some last minute shopping to do?” she said laughing as she let

the tardy customer inside. She knew her staff was anxious to leave, but no small business owner ever turns anyone away, no matter what time it is. “I just wanted to bring this to you so you could enjoy it on Christmas Day,” said the lady as she held out a festive-looking tin. “My mother passed away four years ago and I took some cuttings and seeds from her garden. They’ve been growing well, but never as wonderfully as this year when I started using your free fertilized water. It might be a small thing for you, but my beautiful garden has been such a comfort to me. I just wanted to say thanks.” The woman concluded her little speech with tears in her eyes. Shannon opened the tin and saw it was full of poinsettiashaped sugar cookies covered with green and red sprinkles. She hugged the woman and said thanks. As she left the lady said, “I want you to know, we see the things you do and how you treat your customers and staff. This is not just a shop. You are an important part of our community. As your business grows your neighbours are proud of you.” With a cheerful, “Merry Christmas,” the door was locked and Shannon turned to her staff. “This is what retail is all about. Working in your community and making it a better place. We will all go home and make our own personal Christmas memories, but we will also cherish the memories that are made through these apparently commonplace interactions.” Shannon hugged all the girls and wished them a merry Christmas. Then she locked the door and bid farewell to another great season, thankful for the staff and customers who made it so. ~ Fiona Jansen, Milner Gardens

Best

Books of 2012 Dear Santa:

All I want for Christmas this year is to curl up with a good book, a glass of wine and maybe some chocolate, too!

If anyone was worried whether the Internet or reality shows were frying our brains to the point where we didn’t want to read books anymore, fear not. A recent visit to the bookstore showed that the love of reading is here to stay. Line ups abounded, with Christmas shoppers buying their loved ones that perfect book. Book sales in Canada are still thriving, with a huge jump in E-reading but the majority of us are sticking to the hard copy. A recent report holds out more hope that the generations to come will be even more voracious readers than their parents. B.C. Grade 4 students placed seventh in the world for reading and best in the country. So the good news is we are raising the next generation of readers. Here are some of the best books to come out of 2012 - authors local and from afar BIGGEST BOOK OF 2012 - Fifty Shades of Grey series by E L James. Dubbed Mommy Porn, it is a wonder how this seemingly Harlequin romance-esque trilogy ended up as this year’s bestseller, but there it is. Curiosity might be the biggest reason Fifty Shades is the best selling book of all time in some countries. Here’s the plot: Troubled and dark millionaire sweeps innocent college girl off her feet, bringing her into his S&M world, for better or worse. With one dimensional characters and pages full of explicit sex, it’s an easy and fast read, but don’t attach the word literary to this one. CONTINUED ON PAGE 15

Best Books of 2012 BEST FICTION - 419 by well-known Calgary author Will Ferguson is the winner of this year’s Giller Prize and is by far the most intriguing book to come out of Canada this year. With the base of the book centered around the Nigerian bank scam that has been trolling the Internet for victims for nearly a decade, the book tracks the scam back to a criminal cartel based out of Lagos City. Ferguson takes readers deep into the lies and deception that is “419”, the world’s most well known scam that starts with “Dear Sir, I am the daughter of a Nigirian diplomat and I need your help.” Also of note is Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest by Cheryl Strayed is a must-read memoir capturing an 1,100 hundred mile solo hike. ADULTS WHO LOVED HARRY POTTER - The Casual Vacancy by J K Rowling – her first stab at adult fiction has been selling well (No. 1 at Chapters) but is getting mixed reviews. The book is about small town politics and the private and public wars that go on behind closed doors. Written in somewhat similar style as her beloved Harry Potter series, it will not carry the same cult following she is used to. BEST CANADIANA - Dear Life by Canada’s beloved Alice Munro (81-yearsold) – just when everyone thought Munro had given everything there is to the literary world, she produces yet another heartfelt, inspiring and deeply beautiful collection of short stories on topics she does best, sex, love, and difficult family dynamics. BEST OF LANGLEY - A Year at Killara Farm by Christine Allen brings to life a South Langley hobby farm once owned by author/artist Michael Kluckner and his wife and author Christine Allen. A Year at Killara Farm, is a collection of reminiscences, ‘garden wisdom’ and recipes, all arranged seasonally, month by month. Kluckner’s signature watercolour illustrations add visual flair and the recipes included throughout incorporate produce grown on the property. Also out of Langley is Eleanor Ryan’s Broken into Pieces which takes readers on a rollercoaster ride into the ruins of a family’s life after the teenage son makes one near-fatal decision. For the science fantasy lovers out there, Langley’s Keira Michelle Telford has created The Silver series, offering a glimpse into a post-apocalyptic dystopian future. (Amazon Kindle) LOCAL TRUE STORY - Into The Abyss by Carol Shaben is the riveting true story of surviving a plane crash in remote Alberta. On an icy night in October 1984, a piper navajo carrying 10 people crashed in the remote wilderness of northern Alberta killing six. Four survived: the rookie pilot, a prominent politician, a cop and the criminal he was escorting. The pilot was Erik Vogel, who now lives in the Fraser Valley. At 24-years-old he was over worked and under pressure to fly in dangerous conditions. The hero in this story is the criminal. Also surviving was Larry Shaben, the author’s father and Canada’s first Muslim cabinet minister. Among the dead was a beloved politician. I could not put this book down. Highly accomplished writing but don’t expect to want to fly in a small plane after reading this. TWEENS AND TEENS: The Hobbit by J RR Tolkien. Ask any guy (and a lot of women) what their favourite book was growing up and 80 per cent will say the Hobbit. OK, that percentage was made up, but this beloved adventure is going to make a huge resurgence after this month’s release of the much anticipated Hobbit movie. The Lord of the Ring box set, including the Hobbit, is going for $30, which is a great deal. - - - While not as huge in book form as Twilight and Harry Potter, The Hunger Games series (huge hit at the box office) is still a big seller for teens in 2012. AMAZING BOOKS THAT HIT THEATRES IN 2012 - Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell and Life of Pi by Yann Martel. Both the books and the movies leave you breathless and inspired. To describe both: “Brilliant classics.” ~ Monique Tamminga

The fragrances of Christmas

S

ome smells seem to be permanently engraved in our memories. Scents synonymous with our fondest childhood memories can take us back through the years in the blink of an eye. A room filled with the scent of cinnamon, ginger, or nutmeg will instantly bring to mind Grandma’s gingerbread cookies or Dad’s hot chocolate sprinkled with cinnamon. That’s probably why we rush to stock up with holiday spices and foods that will fill our homes with exotic fragrances. Just think of the oranges we used to find in the bottom of our Christmas stockings, a throwback to earlier days when citrus fruits were precious, rare treats. Indeed, sticking a few cloves into an orange will fill a room with a rich perfume, both sweet and spicy and most definitely Christmassy. To really get into the holiday spirit you can always rely on the wonders of Mother Nature. Start with the fir tree, the king of the forest. To ornament your living room with one of these fragrant beauties, choose a balsam fir — its delicious scent makes it the ideal Christmas tree. Other plants and flowers are also great Christmas traditions: • The poinsettia, also known as the Christmas star, is easily recognized by its impressive, bright red bracts; • Holly, with its prickly leaves and red berries, which make it the Christmas symbol par excellence; • The Jerusalem cherry or winter cherry produces a multitude of small, colourful berries in November that look appetizing but are toxic; • The Christmas cactus, which bears magnificent flowers on the tips of its branches; • The Christmas kalanchoe, whose flowers come in a range of colours and whose leaves are sometimes tinged with red; • The amaryllis, with its enormous flowers, making it an ideal gift; • Mistletoe, hung from the ceiling and under which tradition demands that two people must kiss.
