RDN CHAIR POSITION

Challenge thwarted Bowser director tries to unseat Stanhope NEIL HORNER

news@pqbnews.com

For the first time more than a decade, Regional District of Nanaimo chair Joe Stanhope was challenged for his position at Tuesday night’s inaugural meeting. That challenge came from Bowser/Deep Bay director Bill Veenhof, who said he decided to challenge Stanhope for the chairmanship because he was asked to do so by other directors. “If elected, my philosophy will be that the right answer is important — and my answer isn’t,” he said. “I want to pull from all directors so we can all come to the right decision.” Veenhof, who described himself as a fiscal conservative, said if elected he would push for a core review and would work closely with other agencies that have clout in the RDN, such as the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, Ministry of Agriculture and Ministry of Forests. However, he added that he would focus his energies mainly on internal RDN issues. In his remarks, Stanhope said the election was not about him. “It’s about you,” he said. “It’s about being a functional regional district. That’s what I strive to do. It wasn’t always that way and I’ve spent a lot of time to ensure we are a functional and high-performing regional district. This is all about what direction the board wants to go and I will certainly lead in that direction.” When the votes were tallied, Stanhope was the clear victor, with 11 votes to Veenhof’s six. In an interview, Veenhof said he was asked to run by other directors. “They approached me some months back and asked me to stand, so I did,” he said. See CHANGE, page A5

When drug enforcement officers swooped in on two homes in District 69 this week, they didn’t leave emptyhanded — at least from one of them. Oceanside RCMP Corporal Jesse Foreman said local police and members of the Island District Drug Section executed search warrants at a home in Nanoose Bay and another one in Whiskey Creek on Dec. 10. “The RCMP had obtained evidence that there was drug-related activity oc-

STARTING POINT QE Diamond Jubilee medal for Pat Forbes Patricia Forbes was recently presented with the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Medal for her many years of service to the Lasqueti Community. From her arrival on Lasqueti Island in the 1940s to teach at the old Maple Grove School, to today where she still represents Lasqueti Island on the French Creek Harbour Authority, the ferry committee and the ramp commitee, Forbes has been a powerful contributor to the community. “I first started working with Mrs. Forbes in the early 1970s when the newly formed Island Trust requested volunteers to form an Advisory Planning Commission to advise the Trustees, said Lasqueti resident Merrick Anderson. “She served as secretary to my chairmanship for the next 15 years or so, and minutes from the meetings were always accurate and in my mailbox the next day. “No matter how much time she devoted to the community, she also served her family, and serves on the board of directors of the family business, The Lasqueti Fish Co. Despite all this, she still managed to gift the new babies born on Lasqueti with hand-knit booties, plus many other community building activities. “It gave me great pleasure in my role as regional director to be able to facilitate a tangible way to honour Mrs. Forbes life time of community service. — NEWS staff/Submitted by Merrick Anderson

RON CANTELON ANNOUNCEMENT

Association in shock NEIL HORNER

news@pqbnews.com

Members of the ParksvilleQualicum Liberal Constituency Association say they are still in shock about the announcement this week that MLA Ron Cantelon won’t run in the next election. Association president Bruce Cownden said he’s anticipating some expressions of interest to replace Cantelon

within the next week or so. “Five people ran last time, he said. “I think everybody is a little bit shocked at the moment, but I hope in the next week or so we’ll have some people coming forward. Although the association has a board meeting slated for Monday, Cownden stressed the setting of a nomination meeting is beyond their purview.

SHOOTING INCIDENT IN QUALICUM BEACH

Five years for wounding man David Obetkoff pleaded guilty NEIL HORNER

news@pqbnews.com

A Qualicum Beach man has been sentenced to five years in prison in relation to a shooting incident in November. David Obetkoff, 56, appeared in B.C. Provincial Court on Dec. 11 in relation to a Nov. 10 incident on Kenmuir Road in Qualicum Beach when Obetkoff went to his former girlfriend’s home just after midnight and took several shots at the home with a high-powered rifle, wounding a 22-year-old man in the leg. Obetkoff fled the scene in his pickup truck but was quickly found and arrested without incident by

police on Highway 19A. He was charged with one count of aggravated assault, one count of criminal negligence by using a firearm, one count of criminal negligence by showing wanton or reckless disregard for the lives or safety of other persons and one count of possessing a loaded or restricted firearm. Obetkoff pleaded guilty to one count of discharging a firearm with intent under Section 244 of the Criminal Code, which resulted in a mandatory minimum sentence of five years in jail. He also received a 20-year prohibition from owning or possessing firearms.

The Qualicum Beach Farmers’ Market wrapped up operations for another year on Saturday, so fans of locally-grown produce will have to look elsewhere for their veggies for the next few months. The season, said market president Bobbie Garnons-Williams, was a good one, with more vendors and more customers making it a mustshop experience in the uptown core. “It has been a very good year,” she said. “We have had exceptional weather that has allowed farmers to produce and we’ve had some

great new vendors with baking, organic dog food, wild mushrooms, hemp products and even locally grown wheat and oats.” Besides attracting more customers, she added, the market has brought in a younger demographic, with parents teaching their children about the importance of good food. One of the highlights of the past season, she said, was the exploration of different flavours, with both a tomato tasting day and garlic tasting day. “It gave an idea of some of the different flavours available,” she said.

Change needed — Veenhof CONTINUED FROM PAGE A1

“There’s a sense that some change is required, or necessary.” Veenhof stressed that Stanhope runs good meetings, but he wants to see a different focus. “It is well focussed and it works well under Joe, but I think we need to have a board that’s a little more focused on the business of the RDN and the residents of the RDN,” he said. “As well, I don’t

think we are focussed on causing the staff to do the actions to keep the budget in line . . . we need to see a more aggressive, strategically-focussed board.” Meanwhile, the directorships of both Parksville and Qualicum Beach remained the same, with Coun. Marc Lefebvre and Coun. Dave Willie appointed by their respective councils to remain in their posts.

Organization looking to increase its programs here AUREN RUVINSKY

Junior Achievement is looking for volunteers to continue helping juniors to achieve. The world’s largest not-forprofit youth business and leadership educational organization is looking to increase its programs in the Oceanside area. “Our programs are taught by business professionals from the community,” said Deborah Wakeham, JA’s Vancouver Island manager. “Business leaders, entrepreneurs, people with experience in business or financial literacy in general share their real world knowledge and experience.” She said the organization’s goal is to “create future business leaders,” and generally increase financial literacy, teaching young people every-

thing from basic skills like balancing a cheque book to inspiring students about business careers. They are not looking for

professional teachers, public speakers, or even necessarily experts in their field, just regular business people with experience. “We provide the curriculum, the time commitment is pretty small but the impact they can make on youth is huge,” Wakeham said. Working with the Parksville and District Chamber of Commerce and sponsored by The NEWS, Junior Achievement is looking for volunteers to facilitate programs at Springwood Middle and Ballenas and

Kwalicum Secondary schools. The volunteer business leaders will be screened and given an orientation and then visit local classrooms for an average of around four hours per program, sometimes over several sessions, sometimes in a single workshop. They are specifically looking for help with three programs: Our Business World — teaching Grade 5/6 students how businesses are organized and managed; A Business of Our Own — teaching Grade 6/7 students to organize and operate their own retail stand; and Economics for Success — teaching Grade 9/10 students the advantages of remaining in school. Operating in B.C. since 1955, Junior Achievement has over 120 charters worldwide and will deliver 250 programs to more than 6,000 students on Vancouver Island this year. Interested volunteers should contact local coordinator Gail Stroud at 250-5107671 or gail.stroud@jabc.org.

a day earlier Starting Jan. 10 we hit the streets Tuesdays/Thursdays

The new year will bring with it a big change in regards to when The NEWS hits your doorstep. Beginning in early January, the Parksville Qualicum Beach NEWS will change publication days from Tuesdays / Fridays to Tuesdays / Thursdays. “This change will allow our readers a more timely delivery of local news, and both our readership and advertisers will benefit from having advertised specials, flyers, etc. — delivered one day earlier,” said NEWS publisher Peter McCully. Our first Thursday delivery will be Thursday, Jan. 10, 2013. Business and community leaders are applauding the change. “Having been in the newspaper business myself, I think it makes sense,” said Pam Bottomley the executive director of the Parksville Downtown Business Association. “I’m sure it will go very smoothly.” The change in publication days also changes production day for the editorial department and frees up our reporters for more time in the community, especially on Thursdays. “I’m quite happy about it,” said Katherine Wilk, a director with the Qualicum Beach Downtown Business Association. “We have a lot of events on Thursdays and now The NEWS will be able to get out to them.” Editor John Harding said readers can still expect to see their favourite features and columnists in The NEWS, plus more. “Our stories will be fresh,” said Harding, explaining that news from a late-Monday meeting or event, for example, will now be in the paper a day earlier. “And we are also going to introduce more in-depth features to our pages.” If you have any questions regarding booking and copy deadline changes etc., please contact your rep at The NEWS, 250-248-2545. — NEWS Staff

Terry Hocking is hoping someone very special will come forward to adopt a very special dog.

Mocha needs a home NEIL HORNER

news@pqbnews.com

It would probably be inaccurate to describe Mocha as a canine version of Tiny Tim. Perhaps Chubby Tim would be more accurate. However, the staff at the Parksville SPCA are hoping area residents treat the seven-year-old Rottweiler with the same compassion they would to Charles Dickens’ timeless character and find Mocha a good home this Christmas. SPCA employee Terry Hocking said the dog was brought to the shelter in late November as a stray and it didn’t take long for staff to realize there was something special about her. “There’s a problem with the cerebellum portion of her brain,” Hocking said. “This affects her brain-toleg function. We don’t know if it is due to past trauma, stroke or a

growth or tumor on the brain.” The disorder, she said, impacts Mocha’s gait, making her walk somewhat akin to high-stepping Lippizaner stallions. As well, she has trouble with stairs. Because of this, she said Mocha needs a very special home. “She has a hard time getting up, so she wouldn’t fare well in a split level home, because stairs would be an issue, “ she said. “We are also suggesting no children and she would probably do best as an only pet, because she will probably need a lot of extra attention.” She noted that the dog’s difficulties with walking seems to be the only impact of the disorder, although she conceded, “She could lose a little weight.” Anyone who has room in their heart and home for Mocha should contact the SPCA at 250-248-3811.

Local families celebrate Hanukkah JOHN HARDING

editor@pqbnews.com

There is more than one sacred holiday this time of year. The eight-day Jewish holiday Hanukkah started the evening of Dec. 8 and ends Sunday evening, Dec. 16. There are approximately 100 Jewish families in the region that stretches from Cedar, south of Nanaimo, to Bowser, said Arlene Ackerman, the president of the Central Vancouver Island Jewish Community Society. “We used to have a lot of kids, but the demographic has changed,” said Ackerman. “But it’s coming back.” Many of these families will be at a

Hanukkah celebration this weekend where they will light candles, sing songs and eat latkes (potato pancakes), said Ackerman. The society has monthly meetings with various programs, including guest speakers, said Ackerman, who encourages any Jewish people who have not done so to join their group. She said the society is for “any Jewish people looking for their community. It’s a society that helps the Jewish community celebrate holidays.” You can get in contact with the society by sending an e-mail to: nanaimojewish@gmail.com. As for Hanukkah, The NEWS took

the following from akhlah.com, a website that describes itself as The Jewish Children’s Learning Network: “Hanukkah is the story of a great victory of the Jews over the Syrian-Greeks. After the Temple had been cleaned and the Priests were ready to light the Temple menorah, they could find only one jug of oil that was fit to use. This was only enough for one day, but it lasted for eight. This is why Hanukkah is eight days long. For eight days beginning on the 25th day of the month of Kislev we light the menorah to celebrate the victory and the miracle of Hanukkah.”

SUBMARINERS

ou don’t generally see them, unless you are out on the water and looking straight down, but submarines have been part of Canada’s armed forces for almost a century. That fact, said Ed Hinch, the vice-president of the Submariners Association of Canada-West, is not widely known — but when his group meets in Qualicum Beach over the next year, they’ll be trying to figure out how to change that. Although it is based in Victoria, Hinch said the group travels to Qualicum Beach twice each year to meet in the Legion. “We have members all over the Island, so we go to Qualicum Beach for meetings to save our members from having to travel down Island, he said. “It’s a bit of a day outing. High on the group’s agenda, he said, are the preparations for the 100th anniversary of submarines in Canada, slated for the summer of 2014. “The navy is going to play

a lead role, obviously, so before we figure out what we’re doing, we need to know what they are planning, he said. “We are getting a lot of inquiries from the Americans and from Australia, too. They want to arrive for our celebration. The first two submarines in Canada were the CCI and CCII, which were purchased by the B.C. government in 1914 to patrol the B.C. coast. “The deal was signed at the Union Club in downtown Victoria, so that is one thing we’re looking at, doing

a re-enactment of the purchase of CCI and CCII. The CCI was launched in 1913 for the Chilean Navy, but the deal fell through By and the sub, Neil Horner along with its sister ship, was instead offered to B.C. Premier Sir Richard McBride a mere nine days before the start of the First World War. It departed for Canada on Aug. 4, 1914, the day the war started. To that end, the Schooner Cove Yacht Club is gearing up for its annual Hot Rum Series of races, slated to begin in the new year. The first of these is set to run on Jan. 6, followed by further races on Jan. 13 and 27, with the action continuing on Feb. 17 and 24, with the Hot Rum races winding up with the final competition on March 10.

Community has responded superbly this year

JOHN HARDING editor@pqbnews.com

As they walk through the aisles of local grocery stores filling their carts with necessities and luxuries, shoppers are likely not thinking about their dignity. For someone who cannot figure out where their next meal is going to come from or what their children are going to have for breakfast, a stroll through those same aisles might seem like an unreachable dream. At the Salvation Army’s food bank, those in need can walk some aisles like others, and even grab all the fixings for a traditional Christmas dinner. “It gives the people dignity — a chance to choose what they like or what their children like,” said the Salvation Army’s community services coordinator Lisa Clason. The NEWS, with the help of Clason and some volunteers, went for a stroll in the aisles of the food bank this week. We were given the list that would be given to a single mother of two children, and began filling our bags. The aisles are organized according to the list, or perhaps vice versa. Regardless, we started in the soup aisle and moved on to a row that had dried mashed potatoes,

Early Deadlines for the Holiday Season hit after this year’s cancellation of one of the best annual events for collecting donated food, the Bethlehem Walk. That’s not the case, said Clason — the cupboards are not bare at the food bank. Clason said the organizers of the Bethlehem Walk, the Parksville Fellowship Baptist Church, have been creative in finding other ways to gather items for the food bank. Clason also said “other organizations in the community have stepped up.” People in need this holiday season — or any time of the year — should go to the food bank on the Island Highway in French Creek to register. They will then be given an appointment time to come and stroll the aisles and fill their cart.

rice, Sidekicks, Hamburger Helper, etc. Then there were cans of veggies, tomatoes, fruit and even cranberry sauce. Next was tuna, pork and beans, cakes mixes, pasta sauces, Jello, chips, coffee — absolutely can’t forget peanut butter. There are a couple of other side rooms where you can roll your cart and fill your bag with other necessities like shampoo, toilet paper, diapers. And during Christmas, there’s a room with “extras” — treats and even some local knitting and other little items that could be given as presents. Clason said none of this is possible without the generosity of the community. There were concerns the food bank could take a big

Ron’s legacy

I

t can be difficult to score the performance of an MLA — there are often as many expectations as there are voters. The top priority for any provincial government is health care, so perhaps we can start there as we look at Ron Cantelon, who announced this week he will not seek a third term as the representative for Parksville-Qualicum. Just up the Alberni Highway from downtown Parksville is a construction site that may define the Cantelon years in this riding. By his own admission, Cantelon was a bystander in the early days of the push to build a health centre for our region. It was people like Tom Davies and the Federation of Residents’ Associations who were the real drivers of this process, which will culminate in June, 2013 with the opening of the Oceanside Health Centre. Cantelon didn’t really get engaged until he saw thousands of people at a rally, thousands of people on a petition. The cynic would say any MLA would be crazy not to get behind a grassroots movement like that, but Cantelon’s role in all this is more complex than that view provides. There is another community/region in B.C. — West Kelowna — that has been trying for years to get a health centre like the one we will soon boast. There are roughly 50,000 people in that area who are 20-30-40 minutes away from a full hospital, much like our region. And that doesn’t even take into account the problems presented (accidents, tourist season) created by having just one crossing over Okanagan Lake. In the time between that issue rising to the forefront in West Kelowna and today, where it still remains unresolved, Oceanside residents will have started a movement, did some hard research, rallied, convinced the province to build and actually opened a health centre. Make no mistake, once Cantelon was on board, he made things happen in Victoria. While fellow B.C. Liberal MLA Ben Stewart suffered criticism, and continues to suffer criticism, back home in West Kelowna, Cantelon somehow managed to get the Oceanside Health Centre moved up the health ministry’s priority list. That is a feat accomplished by someone who is much more than a bystander. — Editorial by John Harding

Letters SEAWEED RELIEF I just read the front-page article in the Dec. 11 edition of the The NEWS investigating the local harvest of seaweed. It was followed up in a letter to the editor from Jonathan Biley — a well written response to a concern that I had regarding the annual herring spawn and the potential effect and impact this activity could have on the reproductive cycle of this important species. First, I just want to say thank you to Neil Horner for digging into this story and secondly to Biley for answering my letter in a succinct and educational manner. ANDY LANKESTER Parksville

SEAWEED NECESSARY Re: ‘Seaweed creates jobs’, The NEWS, Tuesday, Dec. 11. The removal of tons of seaweed from the beaches in this area negatively impacts not only the immediate area but the marine ecosystem as a whole. How can one species of seaweed be harvested when there are several in the mix? This fact alone should prohibit any harvesting license from being issued. All seaweed is valuable to the environment, even when left to decompose on the beach. Decomposing seaweed is the compost for the sea and nurtures many valuable life forms and is essential for biodiversity. Forage fish spawn in the upper portion of these beaches so having a vehicle driving and especially turning, will potentially destroy that habitat. Forage fish feed bigger fish such as salmon and according to

ALMANAC Government Contacts PROVINCIAL:

the Cohen Commission the most important single issue in preserving salmon stocks is to protect fish habitat. Salmon also rely on this seaweed and it becomes an important part of their habitat too. Time and time again we see other countries or in this case, our very own east coast rape and plunder the marine environment until it has been destroyed. Then off they go, seeking out new lands to loot, call it job creation and plunder until it’s time to move on once again.  Do we even know if this product will be accepted (due to a high cadmium count) that prohibits Baynes Sound oysters from being sold in Asia and Europe? When are we going to finally respect and appreciate the natural order of things and put our greed on hold — the clock is ticking. EDINA JOHNSTON Denman Island

WALKING LIGHTLY Thanks to Editor John Harding, Neil Horner and Jonathan Biley (The NEWS, Dec. 11) for demystifying the sacredness of piles and rows of dead seaweed on our shores. I confess having frequently harvested this ocean bounty for the benefit of our kitchen garden, especially after storms. A few years ago, a local biologist discouraged gardeners from harvesting, saying that it interferes with the natural ecosystem of our shores. Should I feel disrespectful of our ocean environment for growing more nutritive food right at home? The agricultural use of seaweed has a long history around the world. It is now scientific knowledge that the in-

corporation of seaweed in the soil improves its structure, stimulates the activation of bacteria and fungi that decompose soil particles into simpler nutrients for rapid and healthy plant growth. Seaweeds in the soil provide not only a long list of beneficial minerals and plantgrowth regulators, but also give higher yields, improve resistance to frost and boost shelf life of your produce. The list of benefits from adding or composting seaweeds to your kitchen garden is too extensive to elaborate further. You can search: Vegetable Gardener.com, Ventnor Permaculture, Soil Food Web, Eartheasy. com, UbC Botanical Garden Forum and many other resources. When it comes to the controversy of harvesting, or not, only the algae that are detached from the ocean floor — what position should we take? Yes we must make choices that disturb as little as possible each and every of our Mother Earth ecosystem; we all need to walk light on Earth. Should I feel guilty for gathering large buckets of run aground seaweeds? You are welcome to discuss this with me on my next glorious gleaning, but do not be surprised when I ask you where your groceries come from: California, Mexico, Chili, New Zealand? Who has the lighter carbon footprint? The local grower or the ‘international’ grocery shopper? Grow some of your food, build healthy soils and harvest dead seaweed.

In an editorial published in the Nov. 30 edition of The NEWS, John Harding expressed some very interesting ideas for thought concerning the shellfish industry. He made me think about risk prevention and proactive industrial deterrence of harmful side effects of mining. I would even say it was one of the most logical, well balanced arguments I’ve heard yet regarding coal mining and the effects on the shellfish farming families in Baynes Sound. But now it’s time for my two cents, because Raven Coal is a direct threat to me and my family too, as the coal-receiving facility is to receive over 80 double B-train, unspent-diesel-fuel-spewing coal trucks a day, 24 hours a day, directly across the street from my property. I think it’s fairly obvious the shellfish industry is not willing to “play ball with Raven” even if the coal company were to put up a bond to safeguard the finances of the families that would be affected by any shellfish closures caused by the mine, just as my family wouldn’t accept an offer if forced to sell our property. I, like the shellfish farmers, enjoy my home and life just the way it is. I believe the likelihood of Compliance Energy putting up a bond for the shellfish industry is as far-fetched as British Columbia receiving a fair share of the fiscal and economic benefits from Alberta for the proposed heavy oil Enbridge Pipeline project that reflects the level, degree and nature of the risk borne by the province, the environment and taxpayers. Political gesturing is simply a formality, just as coal mining history is irrelevant. STACEY GAIGA Port Alberni

TAKEOVER TIFF I am opposed to the Nexen takeover and the Canada — China FIPA because together, they constitute a massive handover of power from the Canadian people and our democratic government, to unaccountable corporations interested solely in profit. Economically, the long term viability of oil and tar sands is questionable. Our government could be aggressively promoting, funding, and educating

for alternative, sustainable energy resources. Instead, Harper has created this destructive FIPA, while altering sacrosanct laws that protect us and our environment. Harper has shown us his extreme lack of regard for parliamentary process, putting our democracy, at risk. The 443 page omnibus Bill C-45, amending over 40 pieces of federal legislation, ending protection for most of Canada’s rivers and lakes, recently rammed through the House of Commons, is an excellent example of Harper’ extreme disregard for that which sustains us — the protection and use of our environment. It’s our water, for God’s sake. Prime Minister Harper’s job was to protect Canadian democracy and natural resources from corporate greed. With the damaging Nexen takeover passed, Harper must NOT pass the secretive and extreme FIPA. It is against a massive portion of the Canadian peoples wishes — brought quickly without due consultation and input, with no regard for a sustainable future for our children. I am asking the media, the opposition, our elected officials and my fellow citizens to let Harper know that changing the practice of politics from the inside out, with no regard or respect for procedure or people, is crucifying our country and will not be tolerated. He must be stopped. We are better than this. I write this letter for my children; we do not allow bullies to govern. Period. Shame on you, Stephen Harper. LINDA BIGLOW Qualicum Beach

NATURAL KUDOS If ever there was an opportunity to prove that general, chiropractic and naturopathic medicines could work harmoniously together, this is it. I wish to send a huge bouquet to Dr. Ian Smith, chiropractor, Dr. K.D. Papo, family doctor, Dr. Tara Macart, naturopath and Jonathan Macart, chelation therapist, for the excellent care I received after my car accident last month. Each treatment from these wonderful healers accelerated my progress. I am forever grateful. ONA LUCAS Coombs

STOP, LOOK, LISTEN There is still hope. Last week, I was approaching a marked empty crosswalk, at about 20 feet back. At the same instant a middle aged couple proceeded to walk out briskly on my left and right into the crosswalk. (They were not yet even at the curb but back on the sidewalk.) I stopped so rapidly that items in my truck slipped off the seat. As they passed in front of me while not even making eye contact, they both proceeded to grin with a visible smirk. Recent disturbing pedestrian instances in the press have noted this serious issue, as well as the wearing of dark clothing in the rain and dark. But wait. Today, as I approached an adjacent crosswalk, a nice young fellow stopped, made eye contact, looked both ways and let me proceed, rather than what unfortunately appears to be the norm. Remember: “the elders teach the youngers.” My anger has been calmed and kudos to that fellow. So, in this busy Christmas time (and always), let us all use caution and obey the basic rule: stop, look and listen. ALLAN CLARK Qualicum Beach

SOLUTION POSSIBLE The growing financial crisis across Europe and North America shows no sign of resolution: nor can it while governments borrow from private banks at compound interest. Solidified crises demand radical solutions. In Canada we have our own bank, fully capable of issuing any debt to any form of Canadian government, essentially free of interest, which worked fine for us for almost 40 years, until suddenly being abandoned in 1975. Why? No one will say. Documentation has vanished. But most states from Greece to California are crippled with unpayable debt; only a very few nations fund themselves from their own central banks at cost, although the benefits are plainly visible. No less than 20 states in the U.S., petrified at the mayhem, now have committees of inquiry looking into the establishment of their own state banks, like North Dakota. But Ottawa? Victoria? Silence reigns. RUSS VINDEN Errington

Just a bag of rice and an onion

I

have a hard time with presents. I’ve already had the one of the best gifts anyone could ever get, so where do I go from there? No, it wasn’t an iPod or even a new shack or a fresh wreck. It was just a little bit of rice and an onion — but if I get a more special gift this year, well, that would be a bit of a Christmas miracle. It came from a very dear friend of mine, long ago, right at the start of my clam digging adventure in the Discovery Islands. I was on the verge of destitute, unemployed and living on welfare in East Vancouver. My friend, who lived on his boat at a dock up on Cortes Island suggested I try my hand at clam digging. He knew a good area, he said, so maybe I could scratch up a few bucks. Somehow I managed to rustle up a wreck with no reverse gear, filled it with camping equipment and coaxed it over the Lion’s Gate and down to Horseshoe Bay. The ferry guys had to start the car with a screw-

beach. driver on the “I’ll come Nanaimo side, back to check on but I made it to you in a week,” the Island and, By Neil Horner he said as he after buying handed me my a screwdriver tent, sleeping of my own in bag and other Parksville, continued up to gear. Cortes. We ferried it It was a up to the top of rough crossthe beach and ing and when I pulled up when the boat was empty, I at the dock and met my organized the jumble. When pal, he wasn’t too pleased I looked at what I had asat the prospect of having to sembled though, something go boating that day. We had seemed very wrong. It wasn’t until we had to hurry, he said, because the wind was coming up. A shaken hands, said our farestorm was brewing and we wells and he began walking back down to the skiff that had a fair way to go. “You can pay me for the it hit me. Where was all my food? gas, right?” he asked. “Oh my god,” I gasped. I parked the car and we hurriedly threw my pile of “It’s still in the car!” I pelted down the beach gear in his skiff and headed out through Plunger Pas- after my friend. “Wait!” sage. When I told him what had We droned on forever, happened, he revealed a litpast island after island, bay tle news flash of his own. Turns out the clamming after bay, while the wind picked up and whitecaps was an experiment for him, too, and, well, he was totalbegan to grow around us. Finally, just as the rain ly, completely flat broke. He really began to come down, kept looking at the water as we pulled up onto a lonely we talked and I knew he had

to go. “Look man,” he said. “I’ve got a couple of onions and a bag of rice. That’s all I have and it’s got to last me. You can eat clams and oysters off the beach and I’ll give you half my rice and one of the onions, but really, that’s all I can do.” It was a very lonely feeling as I watched him dwindle away, bouncing on the chop. I took his advice though. I ate off the beach and, thanks to that little bit of rice and that onion — along with berries in the bush — I was able to keep myself going until he returned. The clamming never really worked out but I’ll never forget that rice and that onion. Not only did they keep me alive, but that gift was pretty much half of everything he had — besides his boats and camping gear. Giving it to me made a very real difference in both our lives, one for the better, but also one for the worse. How could I ever ask for anything more than that?

Painting feelings Local artist paints landscapes and seascapes from seeing and feeling LISSA ALEXANDER

Artist Cindy Mawle’s painting, ornaments and jewelry is currently for sale at The Gallery @ Qualicum Art Supply.

rom the breathtaking scenery on the West Coast, to the amazing work of local artists, Cindy Mawle is finding herself overcome with inspiration to paint, too much in fact. “I’m finding a lot of my problem is that I’m around all these people who do all these wonderful things,” she said. “I would see something and think, oh I can try that and add that to mine and, oh look at that… I’m like a little kid, so I had to get away from everybody and just go home and focus on my own work.” Mawle’s work is currently hanging at the Gallery @ Qualicum Art Supply. Mawle grew up in Sooke and has been drawing since she can remember. At age 12 she took oil painting classes from a lady on her street and in high school her art teacher praised her work and encouraged her to continue painting. In 1987 she moved to Didsbury, Alberta where residents persuaded her to teach art classes to children in the predominantly sports-oriented town. Her lessons expanded to include teens and then adults and went on for nine years. While in Alberta, Mawle real-

ized just how beautiful the West Coast was and how much she missed the area. “When I was living in Alberta I painted B.C. landscapes, and everybody in Alberta kept saying, ‘can’t you paint barns?’” Mawle moved back to B.C. in 2004 and began experimenting with new techniques and mediums, trying her hand at abstract. But today she focuses on what she feels as well as what she sees, she said, and is sticking with seascapes and West Coast scenes, incorporating many distant layers into her work. She said she finds inspiration all around her. “There’s dance out there and I see it all the time. When I’m driving I see something and think, Oh I have to go home, I want to paint.” At the gallery Mawle’s paintings, jewelry and her little wooden ornaments adorned with miniature paintings are for sale. These incorporate her shadow photographs of nature as well as little paper paintings, completed with resin and silver. Drop by the Gallery @ Qualicum Art Supply at 101 — 206 First Ave. W to see Mawle’s work or the Salish Sea Market in Bowser. Visit her website at www.cindymawle.com.

Winter Wonderland on Ice at Oceanside Place Parksville arena filled with decorations creating the feeling of skating outdoors LISSA ALEXANDER

reporter@pqbnews.com

Get in the holiday spirit by skating on a frozen pond complete with penguins, polar bears and deer — practically. “We’re trying to get that feeling of skating outdoors at night on a frozen pond,” said Oceanside Place arena programmer Valerie McNutt. “We don’t have that opportunity around here because it’s not cold enough to have those frozen experiences.” It’s called Winter Wonderland on Ice and it runs Dec.

18 to 26, excluding Christmas Day. The arena will have different stations all decorated up with Ballenas art students’ murals and penguin cutouts surrounded by trees and coloured lights. There will also be a sleigh (great for photos) and other festive decorations. Those who aren’t too keen on skating can go out on the deck and watch up-close. Whilst skating on the pond people can enjoy Christmas music, and on Dec. 21 a special caroling performance by

Dolphin Bay Music Students from 3:15 to 5 p.m. A free skate sponsored by Tim Horton’s will take place at Oceanside Place Dec. 22 and 23 from 2 — 3:30 p.m. On Dec. 23 a free skate sponsored by Parksville Lions and Save-On-Foods will take place from 12:15 to 1:45. B.S.S. Winter performance

A huge concert band, a stunning stage band, a very harmonic choir and even a jazz combo are what audience members can expect at Ballenas Secondary School's Whalebone Theatre on Wednesday, Dec. 19. Join this award-winning music department as they celebrate the turn of the season and mark the start of a new year. Director Rick Robson said that the program has something for everyone but like surprises on Christmas morning, 'you will just have to wait and see.' Robson does promise one thing though; the evening will be full of more toe-tapping, bell ringing, horn blowing fun than any small theatre has a right to stuff into one show. Support talented young musicians, admission is by donation and all funds raised go towards the purchase of music. Doors open at 7 p.m. For more info visit www.ballenasmusic.org. — Submitted by Carrie Powell-Davidson

SONGS FROM THE SYMPHONY—The Victoria’s Children Choir impressed the crowd at Victoria Symphony’s A Sentimental Christmas in Qualicum Beach on Monday. The students earned first place in the Summa Cum Laude International Youth Music Festival in Austria last year. Below, recording artist Eleanor McCain’s heartfelt Christmas music was well received at the concert.

DRUMMOND, Myrette M. $2998

JOHN JAMES BUNTING

With great sadness we announce the death of John (“Jack) Bunting, 93, at Qualicum Manor in Qualicum Beach on Monday, December 3, 2012. Jack was born June 5, 1919 in Regina, Saskatchewan, and grew up in Alberta and BC. He was predeceased by his wife Vera in 1990, and is survived by his daughter Barb of Qualicum Beach and son Bob (Cathy Lewis) of North Vancouver. Jack loved the outdoors and derived pleasure from many sports including SCUBA diving and skiing. After a career in the Air Force, Jack moved his family to North Vancouver where he was actively involved in lawn bowling and curling. Jack moved to Qualicum Beach in 2009 where, although forced to slow down, he continued to enjoy regular outings around town in search of the perfect cup of chai. He also loved music. Jack had a great sense of humour and was witty to the end. His family is deeply grateful to the staff at Qualicum Manor for their kindness and care. And to good friends for their support during his final days. Memorial contributions may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.

Passed away on December 3, 2012 with her sister and nieces by her side. Myrette was born in Coatbridge, Scotland in 1935. After graduating from Glasgow University she taught school in Scotland for several years. In 1960 she came to Canada and taught at Abbotsford High School until retirement when Qualicum Beach beckoned. Her interests were many and varied. Myrette was an accomplished pianist, a budding artist/photographer and a prolific writer. The hardships of the physically challenged motivated her to work to influence changes in the community. She will be greatly missed by her sister Sheila Sturgeon (Drummond) of Fanny Bay her nieces Gina Meijer (Paul) of Victoria and their children Miranda and Andrew and Moira Newsom (Quinn) of Cumberland and their children Tori, Rylee, Willow and Jasmin. Myrette’s friends are very welcome to join us on December 15th at 2:00 pm at the Yates Funeral Home in Parksville where we will celebrate a life well lived. Many thanks to the nurses in the Palliative Care ward at Nanaimo Hospital for their compassionate care of my wee sister.

Michael Anton Holyk born November 18, 1936, died December 5, 2012

From humble and hardworking beginnings on a family farm near St. Michael, Alberta to a successful business man, Michael became one of the longest actively serving pharmacists in Canada when he entered his 54th year of practice in early 2012. He was a creative thinker and a maverick amongst pharmacists. He continually challenged himself to improve the business and provide greater excellence in patient care. Michael attended the University of Alberta from 1956 and was granted a degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences in 1959. His career in pharmacy began at a community pharmacy in Camrose, Alberta, where he met Kathryn Bott, who was to become the love of his life for the next 51 years. In 1961 they married and moved to Edmonton where Michael became manager of the Co-op Pharmacy and their first child was born. In 1963 the family moved to Westlock, Alberta and Michael opened Holyk Drugs, marking the start of nearly 50 years of pharmacy ownership. The couple welcomed three more children while in Westlock. With his focus and diligent work ethic Holyk Drugs prospered. Michael doubled the size of the pharmacy and made it one of the largest and most modern drug stores in Northern Alberta. He was an out-of-the-box creative thinker who embraced change and risk in pharmacy throughout his career. These progressive qualities led Holyk Drugs to be the first pharmacy in Northern Alberta to incorporate a computer into pharmacy dispensing. Michael was a very active member of the community and while in Westlock served as president of the local Kinsmen and Chamber of Commerce, sat on the board of the Alberta Pharmacy Association, was elected as town councillor and served as the local police commissioner. He was also a Mason and served on the Board of Stewards for the Westlock United Church. Kathryn and Michael dreamed of one day living in Vancouver. In 1981, Michael purchased Kerrisdale Pharmacy, which he had visited many times while on vacation, and a year later purchased a home in Kerrisdale and moved the family to the West Coast. In 1997, he made the bold business decision to move Kerrisdale Pharmacy from its existing location on 41st Avenue to a newer and more prominent address where it remains to this day. He transformed the site into a modern and efficient pharmacy. In 2001, Michael and his son Colin (also a pharmacist) acquired Hollyburn Pharmacy in West Vancouver. True to Michael’s desire to provide the best care to his patients in the best setting, he moved the pharmacy to its new premises in the Hollyburn Medical Building. After completing the Hollyburn Pharmacy move, Michael envisioned an expanded Kerrisdale Pharmacy that would be unique amongst pharmacies with its soothing, natural, West Coast style. In 2008, after a year of floor-to-ceiling renovations, he realized his vision. He had a bright, artistic eye and his artistic expression was best seen with the renovations of the pharmacies and his homes. He and Kathryn loved running and developed many lasting friendships through the sport. He was full of enthusiasm and had an endless supply of energy, completing many running races, and finishing five marathons in his mid to late 60’s. He was strong willed, tough as nails and met any challenge in life with an unmatchable work ethic and a drive to succeed. Michael loved his wife and family, his career, his home, his cars, his running, and spending time at his Qualicum Beach retreat. He was an epic man, a self-made, successful man who never stopped tackling new projects and new things. He did this with an unwavering level of support and love from his beloved wife. And‌he loved a nice tie, an elegant suit, and a great gin and tonic. Michael is survived by Kathryn, his wife of 51 years, sons Bryan and Colin (Christine), daughters Karyn (Daniel) and Michelle, his brothers Bill (Vicki), Joe (Dorothy), and sister-in-law Mary. He was predeceased by his sister Rose and his brother Harry. The family would like to thank Dr. Luke Chen, Dr. Michael Knight, and Dr. Howard James for their outstanding quality care and personal touch. They would also like to thank all of the staff at the Hematology Apheresis Unit of VGH. A service was held Wednesday, December 12th at 1pm at Ryerson United Church 2195 West 45th Ave, Vancouver. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.kearneyfs.com. Kearney Funeral Services 604-736-0268

DEATHS

DEATHS

David Allen Prescott

July 2, 1960 – Nov. 26, 2012 It is with heartbreaking news we announce the passing of our brother David Allen Prescott. David grew up in Prince Rupert, BC, and later in life he moved to Vancouver Island. David had various hobbies – working with wood was his gift – from building tables, carving canes and whittling wood. He was an avid fisherman and loved playing hockey and working out. Never having children of his own, David took joy in being involved with his many nieces and nephews when possible. David leaves behind 6 siblings and their children – the oldest John (Patsy), & children Kurtis & Adam; Brad (Barb), Michael (Tammy) & children Kory, Samantha & Jayden; Cathy Redman & children Kyle & Cristy; Steven (Janice) & children Bradley & Taylor; and the youngest Julie Fagenallo (Rick) & children Cara, Jordon, Leah, Amy & Ryan. I would like to thank Jackie (David’s neighbor) in Victoria – his extended family, for spending and sharing time with him through good & bad times. Miss you David – Love your family. A gathering will be held on Saturday, December 15th at 2:00 pm at the First Memorial Funeral Home at 1720 Bowen Road, Nanaimo, BC

Ursula Margarete Pohl nee (Marx) October 31, 1925 December 05, 2012 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Ursula after a courageous battle with cancer. Ursula was born in Berlin, Germany and immigrated to Canada in 1953. Predeceased by husband Heinz; survived by her sister Anneliese, son Volkmar (Linda), daughter Vera (Jim), son Frank (Joan), son Bernd (Marsha) and daughter Ingrid (Marty); 11 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Ursula loved to sing and dance; she had a green thumb and her passion was flowers. She loved to watch Julia Child on television and prepared wonderful meals for her family. She worked in hospital administration, a psychiatrist’s office and a number of years teaching in business college. Our deepest gratitude for their care of our mother goes out to Dr. Most and Dr. Papo, her home support care givers, and the wonderful staff at Stanford Place who filled her last years with friendship, entertainment and treated her with care and compassion in her last days. Ursula’s funeral service will be held December 15, at 1:00 pm at Yates Funeral Home, 1000 Allsbrook Rd., Parksville, BC. In lieu of flowers, donations could be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or The Salvation Army Food Bank.

On Dec 2, 2012, at the Richmond Hospital in Richmond, BC, Jack Mighton passed away peacefully with his wife Ilene and family members at his side. Jack was predeceased by his brothers Austin and Ross; and sister Murial Dodds. Jack is survived by his wife Ilene, his sons Gerald (Donna) and Ken, his daughters Jane, Carol (Tim), and Kathy (Rob). Jack had 10 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Jack was 87 years old and was born in Okla, Saskatchewan. The late 1920’s and 30’s were poor years for Jack, and many others of the time. He was separated from his family at an early age but was fortunate to be cared for by a number of wonderful families through his early years. A special thanks goes out to the Fitchell’s in Saskatoon and the Ladukes of Kelvington, Saskatchewan. Jack worked as a Royal Bank teller in various small communities throughout Saskatchewan, eventually meeting his future wife Ilene at the age of 17 in Saskatoon Saskatchewan. Jack and Ilene married in 1945. Jack worked for MacCoshams Transport in the early 50’s, then moving over to the CN Express in the late 50’s. The CN was good for Jack, offering him advancement and a chance to work in Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Quebec, Nova Scotia and Alberta. In 1984, Jack retired from the CN, and he and Ilene built their dream home in Qualicum Beach. For 26 years they developed many wonderful friendships and memories in Qualicum Beach where they golfed, curled and used their home as a holiday retreat for family and friends. In 2009, Jack and Ilene moved to Courtyard Gardens in Richmond BC. A private family service was held in Richmond. In lieu of flowers please donate to your charity of choice.

Bantam reps remain unbeaten Local team of 13 and 14 year-olds win again, pushing impressive record to 10-0 JAMES CL ARKE

sports@pqbnews.com

Oceanside’s Bantam Rep Generals remain unbeaten on the season as they blasted the Peninsula Eagles 6-1 at ‘the Place on Sunday. The win lifts the squad of 13-14 year olds to 10-0 and sitting alone in first in their five-team Tier 3 league. According to OMHA Rep coordinator John Busch, the Bantams have outscored their opponents 60-19 thus far. “Holy smokes,” he chuckled. “They’ve got a real good team this year.” GAMES ON Oceanside’s Atom A development team is in action at ‘the Place Saturday against Nanaimo (10:15 a.m. start), and the Midget Rep A team takes on Comox at 2:15 p.m. in a leaguer. On Sunday, the Peewee A Rep Generals host Kerry Park (11:30 a.m. start.) which is followed by the Midgets who are back in action against Victoria Racquet Club (1:45 p.m. start).

Gens still unbeaten in six straight JAMES CL ARKE

sports@pqbnews.com

Oceanside’s Save-On-Foods Generals upped their unbeaten streak to six straight Wednesday night with a solid 7-4 win over the Westshore Wolves at Bear Mountain Arena, but what bodes even better for the local squad of Jr. Bs was the sight of one of their top forwards, homegrown Taylor Gray, playing pain free. The Wolves scored the only goal of first with 41 seconds left in the period. Oceanside scored three goals in the second to take a 3-1 lead, but the Wolves scored shorthanded with one second left in the period to cut it to 3-2 after 40 minutes. The Genesis-trained Generals found that extra gear in the 3rd again and nailed down the win with four more goals to Nanaimo’s two. A solid win by committee, the Generals got goals from seven different players, as Nick Kapusty, Michael Fretz, Taylor Gray , Cam McCarrick, Riel Gibson, Keenan McConnell, and James Sneddon all fed the net, and five others chipped in with assists. Shots on goal were even at 30 apiece. Oceanside was 0-for-6 on the power play, Westshore 0-for-5. Backup ‘tender Alex Mastrodonato earned the win in net. It was another strong win over a team

with a better record — Westshore went into the game five points up on Oceanside at 18-13.

The win lifts the Generals to 13-14-2 and has them within striking distance of .500 hockey and breathing down Nanai-

mo’s neck for top spot in the North division. McCarrick was the games’ first star, and Fretz the second, but one of the bright spots of the night said Gens’ head coach and GM Brent Demerais was the site of his forward, Taylor Gray, turning on a dime. Wednesday’s was Gray’s third game back and his first pain free in a spell. Gray, 19, from Qualicum Beach, led the team in scoring early in the season but was sidelined with a foot injury suffered when he crashed hard into the goal post after going to the net against Nanaimo back in late October. Gray was on the shelf for four games “and returned a little bit early,” said Demerais. “It was giving out on him so he wasn’t playing a hundred per cent, so we gave him another game off.” Gray is currently fourth on the team in scoring with six goals and 13 assists for 19 points in 24 games having missed five games due to injury. “It’s great to have him back,” said Demerais, adding “last night was by far one of his best games — his skating, he scored a goal. Remember, he couldn’t practice (when he was hurt), so he’s just getting back up to speed. See VALUABLE, page A36

SOCCER

OU thrash Wheaties Oceanside United returns from a loss in style JAMES CL ARKE

sports@pqbnews.com

Oceanside United’s run for a fifth straight MIWSL title and a berth in the BCs hit a speed bump, but the local ladies of soccer bounced back with a 5-nil thrashing of the Wheaties in Nanaimo on Sunday. Shelly Terpstra and Christina Ciolfi led the charge for Oceanside with two goals apiece and Sandy Morrison added the single. It was an important win for the local side, who were handed their first loss of the season the week before (Dec. 2) at QB Rec Fields, a 2-1 final against the Outlaws. Oceanside, who are the only team to have beaten the Outlaws so far this year, that an identical 2-1 final up in Campbell River in September, went into the rematch missing some starters including their captain and leading scorer Ciolfi. “They came out with fire in their bellies,” chuckled OU coach Dan Mahony, pointing out the Outlaws, armed with the league’s top two scorers, “came out in that game looking for revenge ...and having only played one game in the last four weeks due to byes and the long weekend, we were also quite rusty, especially in the opening half.” Oceanside United heads into the final weekend of the first half of the season sitting third in the nine-team league at 7-1-1 for 22 points and five points back of the first place Outlaws at 9-1 have played one more game. Nanaimo, at 11 games played, is currently second with 23 points at 7-2-2. GAME ON Oceanside United is home this weekend for its last game before the Christmas break to face the first year Revolution in a high noon start.

He was getting frustrated, very frustrated (with the injury), but he’s coming around, and that’s a huge bonus for our offence.” ICE CHIPS Oceanside’s starting goalie, home-grown Keifer Giroux, was out of the lineup with a lower body injury over the weekend, clearing the way for his younger brother Liam, an AP with the Nanaimo Silvertips Major Midget team, who was called up to suit up for the Gens on Wednesday as backup goalie.
