Champagne is a perfect choice for New Year's Eve, but for all other occasions, a bold red or a well-paired white wine is the way to go.

A vintage gift idea for your holiday host

I

n the days leading up to the holidays, and sometimes even after, there are a slew of events to go to. Everything from dinner engagements to Christmas parties, there is no end to the wining and dining that takes place. While flowers may be a wonderful way to thank your host for the event they have put on, a great bottle of wine, picked out to suit their taste, is the perfect way to show your appreciation for their efforts. But if you're not a oenophile, chances are picking out the perfect wine can be a daunting task. That's where Swirl Wine Stores' Jeff Wong comes in. For the holiday season, the South Surrey location's manager said the most popular type of wine this holiday season is a red. "'Tis the season to keep warm with a bottle of red wine. I would suggest Church & State Coyote Bowl Meritage. It won a few gold medals this year and is on sale at Swirl," he

said, noting the price is down from $34.90 to $25.90. "This is a no brainer." If you have a seasoned wine drinker to buy for, why not consider something a little out of the ordinary. For a red, Wong suggests trying the Fossil Fuel from the View Winery ($15.90). "It's bold, approachable and won't break the bank," he said. "Aromas and flavours of dark cherry, blood orange and cracked black pepper are followed by smokey coffee notes." he said. "This wine is ready to enjoy with our favourite grilled meat." Another choice to consider would be the Quattro from Cassini winery. A blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Syrah, the full-bodied red is boasting of spice, ripe red berries, vanilla and a hint of lavender. If you're looking for a wine perfect for sipping with your Christmas turkey, Wong suggests The Noble Blend from Joie Winery. "It's a great white wine, with or without the

turkey," he said. Finally, if you have a host who has a full collection, consider accessories to bring out the full potention of their wines. Items like the Corkcicle, which looks like an icicle and goes into a bottle of wine to keep it chilled ($27.99) or cork cages to store your corks in ($24.99 and up). "The cages come in the shape of a purse, boot, a cross, a house, wine bottle, globe, owl, reindeer, Eiffel tower and a hot air balloon," Wong said. "You have to see how cool these are." Wine aerators from Vinturi, True, Vinoair and Nuance are also a great choice to consider, Wong said, as well as custom-made gift baskets. After Christmas, there is no reason to cork the bottles. For New Year's, there is nothing like a great-tasting bubbly to ring in the night. Be sure to ask an expert about getting the best bang for your buck.

f you have foodies on your list, chances are, nothing will make them light up like a basket full of scrumptious goodies. A food basket can include favourites, of course, but it doesn’t hurt to include some new items for them to fall in love with. To help satiate a sweet tooth, take a look at some of the decadent holidaythemed goodies offered up at Chocolaterie Bernard Callebaut, including three new flavours of chocolates. Handcrafted and created by the imaginative team at Chocolaterie, the flavours include holiday favourites butterganache gingerbread, peanut butter and jelly and pumpkin caramel, all placed into the signature copper boxes. “The pumpkin caramel was inspired by our Maitre Chocolatier Derrik Pho’s homemade pumpkin pie recipe,” owner Jackie Pearson explained, adding that the caramel is deglazed with pumpkin puree and a small amount of cream, rather than cream and butter. To enhance the flavor, apricot

brandy is added, with a hint of lemon juice. The peanut butter and jelly chocolate uses rich, all-natural peanut butter and a handmade raspberry jelly, perfect for bringing back childhood memories. Last, but not least, the butterganache gingerbread uses blackstrap molasses to create the gingerbread flavour, without overpowering the ground clove, ginger, cinnamon and nutmeg. A great chocolate centerpiece idea would be the holiday yule log, handcrafted and filled with goodies, while the unique box of chocolates is just as pleasing for the eyes as the palate. Over at Keso Cheese, Mauricio Kremer and his staff create gift baskets for customers filled with a variety of flavours. “Gift giving is what we do to show our loved ones that we have remembered them in a special time of their lives. What better gift than a memory? We can make any occasion memorable with the perfect cheese plate, fondue night or › see page 7

raclette party, and of course, our gift baskets,” he said, noting the baskets are available to suit any budget or holiday theme and can even be custommade. Before buying or putting together a gift basket, Kremer advises finding what flavours your friends and family will like, then building on that. “Gift-giving should be about people’s daily lives. For example, don’t give a bottle of wine to someone who doesn’t drink or a pair of skis to someone who doesn’t like the snow. "In cheese and food, there is a cheese for every palate, even for those who are lactose-intolerant,” he said. If you have someone on your list who may be watching their figure, or just enjoys fruit, consider taking a look at what Edible Arrangements in South Surrey offers.

The flavourful fruit arrangements are a great addition to a party or a gift in themselves. This holiday season, the team at Edible Arrangements have added a healthy twist to their creations with the Merry Gingerbread Man Bouquet, filled with chocolatedipped pineapple, cut into the shape of gingerbread men, plus cantaloupe, honeydew, strawberries and grapes. Or take a look at the new Joyous Bouquet with Swizzle Sampler, which features hand-crafted dove-shaped pineapple dipped in white chocolate, cantaloupe, honeydew, strawberries, grapes and chocolate-covered apples and strawberries, both swizzled with a white glaze. No matter what their tastes are, with so many options available, you're sure to find a pleasing arrangement for the foodie on your list.

Creating a custom-made gift basket for her

W

hen creating a gift basket, the contents don’t have to be all food. When shopping for that special woman in your life, try to create a basket that holds some of her favourite things. Elif Costello of Aldila Boutique suggests building a basket around an item, like a gift card, but expanding so the recipient has something more than an envelope to open. One fool-proof and on-trend item would be the scarf. Whether it’s an infinity scarf or a patterned traditional scarf, Elif said it’s one of the best items to complete an outfit. “The great thing is they are one-size-fits-all, so you don’t have to worry about buying the wrong size,” she said. “Scarves can change an outfit and make it completely new, and they come in every colour and print.” Other suggestions for items to build around a gift card include costume jewelry, which provide the luxe look without a hefty price tag, as well as gloves or pashminas. “Items like that are great for this time of year,” Elif noted. “In our climate, we don’t know when the weather can turn.” Ingrid Kandal at PoshShop also notes that a sparkly gift is a great accent to a basket,

that convey many messages regarding friendship, love or truth and your basket is done.” Ingrid noted to have fun with the basket by including items that are slightly frivolous in nature as opposed to practical. “First thing to consider is, of course, the person’s personality, which should tell you the direction to go – whether that’s practical, glamourous or fun and so on. Some people want to go with a theme, which can be a lot of fun, but can also be restrictive if you don’t know the person or how they would appreciate your choices,” she said. For those who are gourmet food lovers, feel free to weave in some food items, such as a loaf of bread paired with pestos, dips and oils or balsamic vinaigrettes. “A great gift basket trick is to use parts of the gift as the vessel you add other gifts to. An example is to use a nice garbage receptacle to put a bathroomthemed basket together,” Ingrid said. “Add small guest towels and a few soaps to it and you’re done.” Ingrid also noted that one

benefit of creating your own gift basket is that the price point can vary to suit your budget requirements. “Great gift baskets don’t have to cost a lot, but they should show you’ve put thought into it for them to be really successful. Remember while you’re shopping that studies show more happiness comes from giving than receiving, especially this time of the year,” she said. Carol Hecht of Never E’nuff Clothes suggests coming in to take a look at the selection of Myka jewelry for a gift basket. With prices for pieces beginning at $60 and upwards, there are items for almost any budget. “Myka is made in Vancouver and is designed by a local couple from White Rock,” she said. “They do make charms for charm bracelets as well, and all the charms feature Swarovski crystals.” Other items in-store that could help create a great gift basket include sparkly scarves to add some glitz to any outfit and Hanky Panky thongs in Christmas colours, plaid and even animal print.

and a tray, then you prepare your vegetables and put it in the microwave. The other way is with two trays," he said, noting you could put up to three trays in a microwave. "And it doesn't have to be potatoes. It can be beets or carrots, too." Another fun and unique option could be a electric cocktail maker, Brent said. Powered by battery, the cocktail maker comes with a whisk at the end to stir up delicious drinks. "It's transparent hard plastic and we have one at the counter to demo with some coloured water," Brent said. Throughout the store there is a huge selection of items that would be perfect for a gift basket, such as garlic presses, mandolins, silicon garlic peelers – which come in an array of colours – and much more. If the man on your list isn't a gourmand, a pair of designer sunglasses would be a great option. Ebraham Francis, owner of Eyebar Optical, said sunglasses are always a great item to protect eyes from harsh UV rays and weather, but a good idea would be a gift card rather than a pair picked out by someone else. "They will be wearing them on their face, so it's hard without someone being there," he said, noting it is best to get them properly fitted. If you're adamant on getting glasses for your guy, Ebraham suggests finding a universally flattering shape, like the Ray-Ban Wayfarer (pictured above). But, with a gift card, someone is able to browse through Eyebar's extensive collection, which includes Ray-Ban, Carrerra and Burberry.

ust like women, when shopping for the men in your life, a gift basket is a great way to include a variety of their favourite items. There's no doubt, whether your male or female, the gift of food is almost always a sure bet. The Peninsula is home to a host of amazing restaurants offering up sumptuous meals all year. When creating a gift basket, a good starting point may be a gift card to one of the area's many dining destinations. Over at Jimmy Flynn's Celtic Snug, owner Paul McDonough offers gift cards that can include any denomination. "It's entirely up to the person who buys," he noted. "It can be from $5 to whatever." The gift cards never expire and can used on one of the restaurants many events, including their wine or beer pairing events. And with nine beers on tap and live music every Sunday from 1-5 p.m., Jimmy Flynn's is a great spot for the beer fan or music lover in your life. If enjoying a meal at home is preferred, Wolf's Deli offers up a variety of items that can be made into a gift basket, including an extensive selection of European items, such as cakes, cookies, chocolate and candy. For the chef in the house, a visit to Kitchen Therapy may help you cross a name off your list. Owner Brent Bondarenko suggests a chip maker that creates pop chips, much like a potato chip. Instead of deep-frying, though, these chips are made in the microwave on a special tray. "You can buy it two ways. One way is with the mandolin to slice

Local artist Alicia Ballard creates one-of-a-kind pieces in her studio.

Find a masterpiece for the art lover

T

he Peninsula is known for its art scene and culture, so there is a strong possibility you will have an art fan on your list this holiday season. Over at White Rock Gallery, owner Dennie Segnitz suggests coming by to the annual Winter Group Show, which runs until Dec. 23 – perfect for the lastminute shopper. "The theme is small, which means the pieces are attractive from a budget perspective, as well as aesthetically," Segnitz said. "The smaller sizes also mean there are comparatively

For gift shoppers, the gallery's many ceramic pieces offer the surest hedge against the familiar dilemma of buying for someone whose taste differs from our own," Segnitz said. "Everyone loves a beautiful vase or bowl," she said. The show's collection will include pieces from Claudette Castonguay, Min Ma, Robert Genn and much more. Try to consider the recipient's style and taste › from page 14

Of course, before you jump right in and buy the first piece that catches your eye, local artist Alicia Ballard said it's important to consider the taste of the person you are buying for. "You should always consider the person you are giving the item to. I know my family members, sometimes they buy something they like, whether I like it or not," she said. "It's very important to buy according to the taste of the person." She suggested making note of the colour and style they like and using that as a starting point. "You don't want to buy something traditional for someone who likes edgy pieces," Ballard noted. When looking for pieces do consider your budget, as there are many factors when it comes to pricing pieces. "It doesn't need to be pricey, but if the amount of work is less, then the price will be, too," she said. And art doesn't have to just be something you can hang on your wall. Ballard makes pieces using everyday items

like chairs, or even items like trays for storing items. The Peninsula-based artist also creates handmade jewelry featuring semiprecious stones, glass, pearl and Swarovski crystals. To peruse her pieces, visit her studio, #2071285 Martin St., Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. or visit www.TheTerraStudios.com "Don't overlook the possibility of giving the gift of art. Colour gives you life, it gives you energy." At Cheryl's Trading Post, owner Cheryl said there is no limit to unique pieces you can purchase. The store contains an extensive collection of authentic Navajo jewelry, as well as Northwest Coast Art and Huichol Art. "The Huichol yarn art and bead art are filled with important symbols that the Shamans and families use in daily life in practicing their traditional and spiritual practices and beliefs," Cheryl explained. For those who may be on a restricted budget, Cherly noted that there are smaller pieces that can do the trick.

"There are smaller sizes of Huichole yarn art and beaded earrings and several hand-carved Northwest Coast Native earrings under $50," she said. Important to note, Cheryl said, was that all the art in the store is authentic Native-made with sterling silver, natural wool, alpaca and cotton. "Our deer and moose hide moccasins are said to be the most comfortable," she said. If the person on your list already has a favourite piece of art in their possession, one way to enhance that piece would be to have it professionally framed. Over at GS and Co., Gary Patterson said that having a piece properly framed can bring it to the next level and protect it. "We have a certain type of glass, so that when the sunlight hits the picture, it prevents fading," he said. The well-trained staff offer expert advice on all things to do with framing and take into consideration budgets, colour co-ordination and lighting. "You just have to bring it in and we can do the rest," he said.

Stuffing the holiday stockings doesn't mean you have to break the bank when shopping. Many items can be found for less than $30.

Stocking stuffers that won't break the bank

T

he holidays can be a pricey time of year with the shopping and hosting of family and friends. While it may be tempting to lavish the people on your list with expensive and extravagant gifts, your wallet and bank account will thank you in the long run if you consider stocking stuffers for a fraction of the cost. At Angelic Teapot, owners Maureen and Jeff Coroliuc are serving up unique blends of tea that are sure to tickle the tastebuds. For the holiday season, the store has brought in a selection of teas that showcase its festive flavours, Maureen said. “We have many loose leaf teas this Christmas in great flavours like pumpkin, holiday mulled spice, white coconut cream, winter palace marzipan and cranberry apple, which is a herbal tea,” she said. “The organic

white coconut cream tea is a huge hit. We have people coming in from as far as North Vancouver or Langley just to buy it.” The teas are all under the $20 mark, Maureen noted, and are great for the seasoned tea fanatic or for someone just starting out with tea. Other items that would be great in a stocking include Tea Roadies, $19.95, which features a tea bodum in a travel glass, perfect for drinkers on the go. “The nice thing about it is that it doesn’t leak or tip. It’s great for tea lovers and uses loose leaf teas,” Maureen said. For the collector on your stocking stuffer list, or even for a little one, Maureen suggests taking a peek at the miniature tea sets, made from china and boasting floral patterns and gold trims, all ringing in at $17.95.

“We had one lady come in and buy a set to make as the cake topper for her grandmother’s 80th birthday,” Maureen said. “And it’s not just for little girls. We had a little boy come in and he was in love with it. It’s fascinating for all ages because it’s magical and seniors love them because they bring back memories of their childhood.” Over at Celtic Treasure Chest, Steve McVittie has hundreds of items for the person on your list who has ties to the U.K. Everything from pastries, such as Bakewell tarts, Currant slices and English egg custard tarts, to deli favourites like British bangers and Scotch eggs can be found in the store. Popular items include proper Scottish shortbread, cups and tea towels featuring Welsh and Scottish flags, a line of Irish › see page 19

chocolate bars enhanced with the flavour Guinness for less than $10. “We’ve also got a whole line of Jaffa cakes, all sorts of boxes of chocolate candies, fruit pastels, jelly babies and wine gums, all directly from England,” Steve said. Other ideas for stocking stuffers include Marks and Spencer puddings and cakes, with flavours like cappuccino liqueur, Jamaican rum and amaratto, and whiskey cakes, which feature high-quality whiskey flavours. “They come in a nice little canister that can be collected or used to store things,” Steve said. “We also have little marmalades which come in four- and five-packs and feature different flavours, like Scotch whiskey.” Most importantly, Steve said to focus on the nostalgia that will come from the gift. “Everyone may have someone they know who is from England or Scotland and there is something they miss from there,” he said. “You can buy them something small, like a cup or a tea towel and they will remember home and you, the person who bought it and brought the memories back to them. It’s not just chocolates, it’s memories.” At Jay’s Clocks, owner Madu Ramji admits that while the Canucks may not be on the ice, that’s no reason to forget about all the great stocking stuffers for the hockey fan,

such as key chains. If you don’t have a hockey fan on the list, Madu suggests taking a look at small clocks, perfect for golfing, or a desk clock. “We also have many alarm clocks that are high-quality and can glow in the dark,” she said. At Deals World, the one-stop shop has hundreds of stocking stuffers in-store. Everything from colourful pashminas to super-soft Minky throws, perfect for the couch as the weather dips. For the guys, there is a line of beer glasses, shot glasses and bottle openers featuring the

Items range from practical – like leatherbound day planners starting at $3.98 and up – to fun items like Canucks earbuds. At Zig Zag, manager Kerry said stocking stuffers can include anything from tote umbrellas to shield from the wet weather or patterned scarves to keep you warm. Finding them the gift that keeps on giving

T

he gift of a class or education is a gift that can become so much more. Whether the gift is a cooking class or an art class, by finding a gift that teaches a new skill, the recipient has something that they can keep with them for years to come. At Roca Blanca Dance, owner Brian Udal said giving the gift of dance is one of the most unique presents you can give. "If I was thinking of buying a gift, I would want it to be something that is different and special," he said. "The gift of dance is a skill that keeps giving back, it's not something you would get tired of, like a vase that collects dust." At the beginning of the season on Jan. 11, those who sign up for a class or register by Jan. 6, will receive 10 per cent off their class and a chance to win a dinner at a local, independent restaurant. "The gift of giving dance gives back for the rest of your life," he said. Grant O'Kane of Arthur Murray Dance Studio agrees, the gift of dancing is one that lasts a lifetime. Currently, Arthur Murray is hosting a promotion allowing one free private lesson and 50

Brian Udal suggests giving the gift of dance.

per cent off the introductory course. "The private lesson has to be scheduled and is 45 minutes to one hour long," O'Kane said. "We specialize in making dance fun, light and easy, so if you're shy we can create a schedule that works for you."

To find out more, email, call or come in to Arthur Murray and inquire about the classes or purchase a gift card for a loved one. For those interested in sharpening their culinary skills, Thitsa Deli hosts private chef and instructor Robert Vaillancourt, who teaches a variety of classes ranging from French, Italian and Christmas. The popular classes are two to three hours long and at the end of the class, participants are able to indulge in their creation. If the person on your list has shown an interest in the world of art, Jessica, from The Gallery Central Plaza, suggests taking a look at the art classes offered by artists Susan Falk and Tony O'Regan. "Both have been teaching for more than a dozen years," she said, noting the class sizes were small. Each class is five weeks long and all are open to people of any level. The classes are $125, not including supplies, and begin in mid-January. "Both teachers are fantastic and very approachable," Jessica said. "If you want to create a gift certificate, instead of using the monetary amount, write down a class."

They may say 'Made in the U.S.A.' but then you find out that it was actually processed in China," she said. If you're looking to purchase a pet as a gift for the holidays, there are lots of different things to consider before bringing a furry friend home. Ferris suggests people look into alternatives before purchasing a pet for someone else, as many reputable breeders want to meet the owner before selling animals. breeder takes responsible care of all his or her dogs, providing nutritious quality dog food, clean water, immunization, proper vet care, parasite prevention and treatment, grooming, exercise, socialization and companionship. A breeder should belong to a national and/or local breed club and abide by the club's code of ethics. Spending the time and doing adequate research will save time and grief in the long run, Ferris said. "Find the right dog for that person's lifestyle – can they afford food and vet care, how much time do they have for training and socializing with the dogs – all of that is important and people can forget," Ferris said. And while puppies are adorable, Ferris advises purchasers not to rule out an older dog. "Puppies are way more work than adult dogs," said Ferris. "It takes time and a lot of work."
