SPICE IT UP NUTMEG

GADGET CORNER Kitchen Grips FLXaPrene® Oven Mitt

Heightening the flavours!

THEY’VE GOT YOU COVERED! Famous for its popular collection of kitchen gloves, Kitchen Grips’ oven gloves are an undisputed favourite with both chefs and home cooks. They're flexible, comfortable and, most importantly, they're good.

The aromatic spice nutmeg has come a long way since the days when it was thought to ward off the plague! Today nutmeg – the seed from the fruit of a tropical tree – is prized for its culinary versatility and perfect for the holiday season. Nutmeg heightens the flavours and aromas of holiday cookies, spice cakes, pies and puddings and is indispensable to eggnog, mulled wine and hot apple cider. In the kitchen, freshly grated nutmeg is the perfect addition to many dishes including sweet potatoes, custards, soups, sauces, soufflés and even meats. It is a key ingredient of the classic béchamel sauce. The freshly grated spice compliments egg dishes and will add a little zip to an array of vegetable recipes that use squash, cabbage, spinach, broccoli, beans, onions or eggplant. A pinch of nutmeg added to mashed potatoes makes a tasty difference. Nutmeg possesses a warm, sweet, nutty flavour with a subtle peppery note. Its sweet spiciness adds a distinctive note to many sweet and savoury dishes. To ensure the best flavour it is essential that you grate the nutmeg whole. The oils of the nutmeg kernel are highly volatile and once ground the intense aroma and unique flavour begin to dissipate. A whole nutmeg will keep for at least for one year. One nutmeg equals 2-3 teaspoons grated. As little as 1/8 of a teaspoon is enough to delightfully season an entire dish.

The mitts feature a uniquely designed, raisednub pattern that adds insulation, protecting the hands from hot and cold temperatures ranging from plus 500°F to minus 134°F. This unique non-skid, textured surface is engineered to provide a more controlled, non-slip grip, an important consideration when working with hot pans. Anti-microbial, the non-porous FLXaPrene® stops bacteria growth and prevents stains that can cause bacterial buildup on the glove. Both water-repellent and stain-resistant, this revolutionary oven mitt is safer, more functional and cost-effective – they will look good and perform well for many years. The Kitchen Grips oven mitts are comfortable for both right and left-handed use. Machine washable, they can also be cleaned on the top shelf of the dishwasher. Made in the USA.

I'm dreaming of a White Christmas Setting the Christmas table is something that I enjoy. Each year I try something different. I am becoming weary of the traditional red, green and gold decor and I think that I will try a White theme.

A WHITE HOLIDAY THEME LOOKS FESTIVE AND THE BEST PART IT'S EASY TO PUT TOGETHER. Whether you celebrate Christmas at the cabin, or have a Minimalist style, or love your Victorian Christmas or have an Art Deco home each one will lend itself to a white theme.

CABIN CHRISTMAS

By: Judith Moore

Professional OfďŹ ces Residential 3FUBJM t $PNNFSDJBM (New and Renovations)

You will need white table runners, table cloths, or place mats, white candles, tea lights, white flowers (Poinsettias would be perfect) white christmas lights, white dinner plates. I admit that I love my fresh green tree, with white lights, but a white tree just might work for you. Crystal or glass drinkware, silver tableware and silver ornaments. A white room would be the ideal setting, but dim the overhead lights when you light all the candles on your table and the table becomes the focal point. Set the tone for your dinner with invitations and place cards that reflect your White Christmas theme - and don't forget the "White Christmas" music. When it is all said and done, the best table decoration is the one that you provide to others not as fortunate as we are. The Salvation Army and Coast Realty have a hamper program "Sharing the Christmas Spirit". Please donate generously, either with food, money or your time (to help pack and deliver hampers). Call Coast Realty (250) 897-3999 or the Salvation Army (250) 338-8221 to find out more.

VALLEY LIVING INTHE HOME

THE COMOX VALLEY RECORD

WHAT DOYOU WANT YOUR FLOORTO BE? You probably want it to be just right for your home, your style, and your family. Warm and inviting, carpet gives a room an overall comfortable feeling. In colder climates or seasons, carpet even provides actual thermal resistance and is one of the more economical choices in flooring. There are multiple things to consider when choosing carpet for your home. It's more than the colour or pattern. The style, durability, construction, and fibre all play an

important role in your selection. Your ultimate choice will reflect how you want to personalize your living space. Carpet can be a neutral foundation or it can be a focal point with vibrant colours and stronger, bolder patterns and textures. Because it covers so much living space, carpet is the foundation of your room's decor. You will want to select a colour that unites your decorative elements and creates the atmosphere you desire. Ever-popular beige carpet can make a

room look spacious, but for a bolder statement, look for a common or accent colour in your furniture and draperies. Your budget and your needs are two key elements in selecting carpet. There are a wide range of choices and costs from which to make your selection. Ask yourself how long you expect to keep your carpet before replacing it. A better grade carpet will give you a greater length of service than one of lesser quality. Carpet helps absorb the noises found in our homes. Adding a cushion pad beneath your carpet reduces noise even further, acting as a sound barrier between floors by helping to block the

sound transmission to rooms below. Carpet is ideal for cushioning our footsteps, reducing slips and falls, and minimizing injuries when falls do occur. Carpet provides safety protection for the whole family, but especially for toddlers and older individuals. How the carpet fits into your lifestyle is just as important as the colour or pattern you choose. Carpet can help you clearly define the mood of the room through your choice of colour and texture, setting a formal, elegant tone or a cozy casualness. With proper care, your carpet will add luxurious warmth and beauty to your home for many years.

Christmas Shopping INTHE LINGERIE STORE

THE COMOX VALLEY RECORD

SHOPPING FOR MOM Yup, lingerie stores contain great gifts for moms, grandmothers and other family members. Robes are a season must-have with spa-like, waffle-weaves being just as popular as the thick, lush cotton terry varieties. Look for the finest fabrics and perfect stitching for a robe that will be snuggly for years to come. Also a popular choice is high-end pajamas. Makers like BedHead specialize in warm, winter pj’s in designs that will keep the wearer smiling. Flowers are an everpopular design but look for some younger prints like paisley and leopard too.

SHOPPING FOR HER When you’re shopping for that special someone in your life the choices can be overwhelming but there are a few things to keep in mind. First off, peek in her drawers for sizing. While not all lines fit the same, this will give you a place to start. Also keep in mind that some stores keep record of what a woman has previously bought so they may have sizing information on file. Secondly, go for quality over quantity. Everyone likes to see piles of gifts under the tree, of course, but one piece of lingerie that feels and looks exquisite is worth many items that will just fall apart after two washings. Check for quality fabrics, detailing and possible faults in sewing to make sure you’re getting the best. And if you don’t know where to start, just ask. Salespeople can point you towards some of the popular pieces. For example, anything by Hanky Panky tends to be a big hit with women and the sizing is generous so it’s great for gift-givers too.

SHOPPING FOR THE YOUTH And while people don’t generally want to buy their daughters thongs or bras, there are still good choices available. Look for a camisole, flannel pjs or patterned leggings for the younger set.

STILL STUMPED? Many people think of naughty-somethings when they hear the word “lingerie” but the fact is, lingerie stores have come a long way. They are no longer darkened stores that sell cheap, mesh underthings in brown paper bags. No, the lingerie stores of today are bright, friendly, welcoming and stocked full of items perfect for under many-a-tree. And lingerie stores aren’t just for romantic couplings either.

And if you’re really not sure what she likes, a gift card is always a welcomed option. Instead of her settling for something that isn’t quite right, or spending time in the returns line, she can get what fits her perfectly on her schedule. And don’t be afraid to ask her or her friends what she likes or ask the salespeople for help. Lingerie shopping should be a fun part of the season so take control and make it a happy holiday for both you and the receiver alike.
