School board seeking public input on facilities

SANTA STOPS BY SILVER CITY NITES

BY TIMOTHY SCHAFER Times Staff

The funeral dirge has begun for two schools in School District 20 (Kootenay Columbia) as the board of trustees embarks upon its facilities review this week. The district is faced with closing one of the two schools in Rossland, as well as one elementary school in Castlegar, but how that end will come has yet to be determined. Beginning last week, the district released background information to the public on how the closures could take place in preparation for public forums that begin in mid January, as well as announcing the period was open for written submissions. When people take a look at the various configurations under consideration (www.sd20.bc.ca/facilities), and they attend the public forums, they should be amply armed to express an opinion on school closures, said board chair Darrel Ganzert. Although Ganzert said the board was not bound to the current motions passed or to the intention of closing schools, the situation has become dire. “We are under such budget pressure we have to take extreme measures,” he said about the closures. “What we are hoping is we can get a sense from the public, pos-

sibly some areas that would be less impactful upon them, possibly some ideas we haven’t considered ourselves in the past. That is the intention of the public input.” All trustees will be in attendance at the forums and they will review all of the information sent to them. The board is hosting a public forum on Jan. 15 at 6:30 p.m. in the Rossland Secondary School gym to discuss potential closures or reconfigurations in the Rossland and Greater Trail area. Two days later the Castlegar public forum takes place at Twin Rivers Elementary. Wendy Herbert, a retired superintendent from SD 64 (Gulf Islands) will help staff and guide the board through the final steps of the facilities review. She will facilitate meetings, including public forums, and co‐develop resources. Once the public comment period is over the board of directors will move swiftly into a decision, with first readings of any potential bylaws related to reconfiguration and closures coming Feb. 4. On Feb. 12 second readings of any potential bylaws related to reconfiguration and closures will take place, with third and final readings of any potential bylaws coming Feb. 25. However, Ganzert hinted there could be additional public meetings held. See DEADLINE, Page 3

A local man was killed in a motor vehicle accident on Sunday evening in the Birchbank area near Murphy Creek. Trail RCMP and regional firefighters responded to a two-vehicle crash on Highway 22 at 7 p.m. Initial investigation revealed that 53-year-old Franklin Murray Kotyk, from the Trail area, died at the scene as a result of injuries sustained in the crash. According to the police report, Kotyk was traveling toward Castlegar in a 2000 Ford SUV and crossed into the incoming lane.

The driver, from Vernon, was traveling toward Trail in a 1990 Chevrolet truck and was unable to avoid the SUV. He suffered serious injuries from the crash and was transported to Kelowna. As a result of the collision, the highway was closed for almost four hours, said Cpl. John Ferguson of the West Kootenay Traffic Services. Alcohol was not a factor in the crash, and the occupants wore seatbelts, said the police. The investigation into the crash continues. The roads were slippery and snow covered at the time of the crash.

Senior citizen apprehended for vandalism

Pennies for Paws

By Sheri Regnier Times Staff

For one 64-year-old Trail resident, ignoring video surveillance warnings, meant his quick capture on charges of mischief and vandalism. Trail and Greater District RCMP apprehended a retirement-aged suspect Sunday, who vandalized three local businesses, by using black spray paint to graffiti windows, gas pumps, and cars. The incidents occurred overnight between Saturday and Sunday. The perpetrator was caught with the aid of video surveillance, identified and arrested, stated a press release. “It’s really unusual to have a fellow at this age doing this type of stuff,” said Sgt. Rob Hawton, of the Trail and Greater District RCMP. “It caught us by surprise, that’s for sure.” The preliminary investigation indicated that the acts were targeted vandalism, and there is no dollar estimate of the damages, however it is estimated to be well over $5000, according to the release. “A fair bit of damage was done with this guy in just one night, but he was caught, and that is the main thing,” added Hawton Alcohol does not appear to be a factor, he said. Instead of having a day of rest, on Sunday the staff at Gerick’s Cycle and Glenmerry Husky had to put in a lot of extra elbow grease to clean up their property. “It took a lot of heavy duty chemicals and time to scrub off the windows, their frames and stucco,” said Jason Proulx of Gerick’s Cycle. Screens on the gas pumps at Glenmerry Mohawk had to be scraped off and scrubbed, said owner John Dyer, whose video cameras caught the suspect red handed. The accused is scheduled for an arraignment on Feb. 7.

Power bills going up on New Year’s Day By Timothy Schafer Times Staff

The Christmas bills will come early this year for Greater Trail residents as FortisBC has received approval to slap a total 6.6 per cent increase on residential power customers as of Jan. 1. The power company gained the nod from the B.C. Utilities Commission for a 4.2 per cent increase in a revenue requirements decision, along with a 2.3 per cent increase from rate rebalancing. For the average residential customer using 1,050 kWh per month, the change is an increase of approximately $7.07 per month. There is some good news for small business owners. The cumulative rate adjustment on Jan. 1 will see business customers receiving a 5.5 per cent reduction in their bills.

“Fruitvale Kids Care About Animals,” is the slogan for a fundraiser started in November by Fruitvale Elementary School teacher Eliza Forbes. Students have been collecting “Pennies for Paws” and filling up classroom jars with pennies and loose change. Once all the pennies have been rolled up, the proceeds will be given to the BCSPCA.

Question period prevails at RDKB meetings By Sheri Regnier Times Staff

It’s official. Bylaw number 1514 was passed by Regional District Kootenay Boundary (RDKB) board members, during an open meeting on Nov. 29, to ensure that the public and media can voice its concerns during an open question period at the end of each board meeting. Earlier in November, an Area C citizen wrote a letter to the editor of the Trail Times, to address his concern about the possibility that the RDKB may

want to disallow a question period or public input at its board meetings. “All you are doing with not allowing speakers etc., is alienating people,” wrote Joe Tatangelo. Tatangelo’s letter was in response to an article published in the Grand Forks Gazette on Nov. 8. Chair of RDKB, Larry Gray, did rebut this “misunderstanding” on Nov. 20 in a letter to the Trail Times that said, members of the press or the public do have an opportunity to address the board on items on the agenda or to ask

questions of the board, at the conclusion of meeting. “As part of the discussion, a motion arose during the meeting to allow an undefined open-mike period at the onset of the meeting,” wrote Gray. “This motion was defeated and the whole bylaw was referred back to committee for further recommendations to the board.” The new bylaw is just “house-keeping” said Gray. “Now, a question period at the end of each meeting is a formal thing.”

Deadline for written submissions is Jan. 4

FROM PAGE 1 “We haven’t nailed down all of the process,” he said. Starting in the fall of 2008 the district began a process of reviewing its facilities in light of declining enrolment and budgetary pressures. Various reports were generated and pub-

lic meetings held, all focused on a variety of options and scenarios related to school configurations. After the multi‐ year process the board stated in April of 2012 its intention to look at facilities specifically in relation to reconfiguration or possible closure in Rossland

and in the Twin Rivers/ Castlegar Primary area of Castlegar. Two specific motions were passed and had decisions being made around both areas by Dec. 31, 2012. The board subsequently revised the decision dates on those motions to have them completed by

board. Send your submission to: Facilities Consultation, School District No. 20 (Kootenay-Columbia), suite 120-1290 Esplanade (V1R 4T2). A l t e r n a t i v e l y, people can email a submission to facilitiesconsult@sd20. bc.ca by the same deadline date.

Pipeline hearings resume

THE CANADIAN PRESS PRINCE RUPERT, B.C. - The effects of a tanker port and increased tanker traffic off the west coast will be front and centre at hearings into the proposed Northern Gateway pipeline this week, as proponents and critics convene for another round of hearings. The panel reviewing the plan to build 1,100-kilometre twin pipelines will arrive in Prince Rupert, where participants will be questioning witnesses under oath about the environmental and socio-economic effects of the marine terminal and the increased shipping it will bring to the B.C. coast. “(We) have focused on potential impacts to wildlife, particularly marine mammals such as humpback whales and there’s the northern resident killer whale that could potentially be impacted by the increasing traffic of oil tankers should this project go ahead,” said Tim Leadems of Ecojustice, which is representing a coalition of environmental groups at the hearings. The Pacific humpback whale is listed as an endangered species under the federal Species At Risk Act. Ecojustice launched a lawsuit against the federal government in September claiming that Ottawa’s failure to implement protections for the whales and other endangered species legislated under the act is further endangering wildlife along the proposed route. During the last round of hearings this fall in Prince George several intervening groups probed company and federal officials about the effects on endangered caribou populations.

THE CANADIAN PRESS SUMMERLAND, B.C. - A 91-yearold man has died just weeks after he was left alone for several days in his room in an assisted living facility in Summerland. Alfredo Bonaldi did not appear for meals in the dining room of the Summerland Seniors Village for about four days in November, but none of the staff checked on him. When a family member entered the room, Bonaldi was found unable to move in his bed and suffering from several ailments. He was taken to hospital, but the RCMP have now confirmed that he died over the weekend. The Interior Health Authority and the Ministry of Health launched an investigation of the care facility after the discovery of Bonaldi in his room. The authority has also appointed a clinical consultant at Summerland Village to work with management and staff to improve care.

Abbotsford News

This year, the Abbotsford Police Department (APD) has extended its list of Christmas card recipients to include criminals and trouble-makers. “Operation Resolution” involves cards being sent to a few dozen prolific offenders, property offenders and people known for drug and gang activity in Abbotsford. On the front of the card is an image of Police Chief Bob Rich dressed in a Santa costume and tactical gear with the message, “You are always only one choice away from changing your life.” The inside of the card states “For the sake of your family and for your own sake, consider 2013 the year you choose a new and better life.” Const. Ian MacDonald acknowledges that the majority of recipients will think it’s a joke. But he said this is the time of year that many people consider where their lives are headed.

Lost hunter survived 21 nights THE CANADIAN PRESS WINNIPEG - A hunter who turned up after being lost in the southeast Manitoba bush for three weeks says thoughts of his family and the hundreds of people who were looking for him kept him going. “(It was) my wife and my son and the knowledge that the search and rescue community and people I don’t even know were out looking,” said Brad Lambert, who turned up safe and sound Saturday after spending 21 nights in his truck, stranded in the bush. “That means a great deal.” Lambert, 46, had been last seen Nov. 15 when he stopped to buy supplies for a deer hunting trip southeast of his Winnipeg home. Things went off the rails when a “wrong turn on the wrong trail” left him stuck and stranded in the middle of nowhere. When he didn’t return home, the search began. Police and hundreds of volunteers scoured the densely forested area. Aircraft were called in. Residents and busi-

ness owners throughout Manitoba and Ontario were asked to check any buildings such as outdoor sheds, abandoned structures and garages on their properties. Meanwhile, Lambert said he did what he could to survive. Although he had no food and ate nothing during the entire ordeal, he was able to melt snow for drinking water. And he did his best to aid searchers. “Daytime was spent building signal fires, walking through an expansive marsh trying to flag aircraft with my blaze orange hunting gear and trying to be noticed,” he said. “I could see some planes. At night there were some aircraft as well. “Unfortunately, I guess they couldn’t see me. It had to be a 10-20 square kilometre open meadow with bluffs - it would be extremely difficult to locate from the air one person. “At times, it was very disheartening.” Eventually, Lambert realized he had to set out on foot. He thrashed his way through heavy bush

until he came to a trail, then followed the trail until it came to a road. “I was found on the

road.” Lambert says he feels fine, although he is tired.

Aleixo Muise, a gastroenterologist at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, said doctors discovered a unique mutated gene that was causing constant inflammation in Brygette’s gastrointestinal tract. Only 20 people in the world are known to have the mutation, Muise said. Brygette had a shot at a cure: a bone marrow transplant. “They told us that they could probably save her life,” said Penny Lambert, Brygette’s mother. “It was a high risk, but it was our only option.” Muise said understanding Brygette’s case will help researchers understand and develop cures for all types of inflammatory bowel disease.

Clean LNG development can still be done

O

n Friday, as the federal government was giving the green light to a Malaysian investment of billions more into northern B.C.’s liquefied natural gas megaproject, Coastal First Nations chiefs held their quarterly board meeting in Vancouver. These are now the most powerful aboriginal leaders in North America, bankrolled by U.S. environmental groups and their wealthy charity foundation backers as guardians of the Great Bear Rainforest. A major topic was the Haisla Nation, the Kitimat partner that abruptly quit its voluntary association with the Haida, Gitga’at and other communities over its plans to develop LNG exports. This discord comes at a bad time. Premier Christy Clark has bet heavily on LNG, not just for her government’s future, but the industrial and economic

direction of the province for decades to come. Initial press reports were misleading. One had it that Haisla Chief Councillor Ellis Ross, the B.C. government’s key ally on LNG, was “buddying up” with the Harper government on the Enbridge oil pipeline proposed to go to Kitimat, in the heart of Coastal First Nations territory. Not so. Both Ross and Coastal First Nations executive director Art Sterritt confirmed to me that they remain solidly against the Enbridge proposal. The disagreement is over how to power the processing of LNG, which the Haisla are pioneering with provincial assistance. Sterritt said the Haisla and the rest of the group were in agreement until a few weeks ago. The plan was to follow Clark’s solemn vow to make B.C. LNG the “greenest” in the world. All parties acknowledge

TOM

that some of B.C.’s shale gas will have to be burned to process and ship LNG to Asia. The initial idea was that one or two natural gas-fired power plants would be built, eventually backing up wind, small hydro and other renewable supplies. BC Hydro has 600 megawatts available from its dams, which would require new transmission capacity up to Kitimat to help run the first two LNG plants proposed in partnership with the Haisla. Then the play got bigger. The B.C. government

transferred Crown land on Douglas Channel to the Haisla for an LNG project planned by Shell, PetroChina and Korea Gas. And Sterritt said he started getting signals from Victoria that the industry doesn’t want to buy power from outside producers to drive LNG cooling and compression. Instead they wanted to power it directly with gas, using equipment called “mechanical drives” rather than electrical drives. In a letter to Haisla members explaining why he quit the Coastal First Nations, Ross said he was insulted by Sterritt’s comments that the Haisla were choosing “the dirtiest way possible” to ship LNG. Ross noted that emissions would be about the same if gas is burned in the LNG plant or in a power plant nearby. That’s true, but Sterritt points out a critical difference. If LNG producers are allowed to use

single-purpose mechanical drives, no renewable energy can ever be added. And as more LNG producers rush into B.C., reserves that would have lasted 75 to 100 years could be depleted in 30. And when the gas is gone? “These big, hulking plants that are going to be in Kitimat are just going to be sitting there, rotting,” Sterritt said. “It happens all over the world.” B.C.’s clean energy plan envisions extending the BC Hydro grid, developing run-of-river and wind farms such as the big offshore proposal off Haida Gwaii, and ultimately a future beyond oil and gas. Now, in their rush to develop LNG, Clark and Energy Minister Rich Coleman seem poised to abandon that strategy. Bond battles Santa THE ASSOCIATED PRESS LOS ANGELES - James Bond is in a boxoffice photo finish with Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny over what looks to be the last slow weekend of the holidays. Sony’s Bond tale “Skyfall” took in $11 million to move back to No. 1 in its fifth weekend. That put it narrowly ahead of Paramount’s “Rise of the Guardians,” the animated adventure of Santa, the Easter Bunny and other mythological heroes that pulled in $10.5 million.

production for every rise in average global temperature of one degree C. There probably is a way to stop the warming from passing plus 2 degrees C and triggering the feedbacks, during the decades it will take to get our emissions back down. It’s called “geo-engineering”: direct human intervention in the climate system. Our greenhouse gas emissions are an inadvertent example of geoengineering that is pushing the climate in the wrong direction. Another, deliberate kind of geoengineering may be needed to stop it. Geo-engineering to hold the heat down is quite possible, though the undesirable side-effects could be very large. The biggest problem is that it’s relatively cheap: dozens of governments could afford to do it – and just one government, acting alone, could do it to the whole atmosphere. So the fourth phase of the climate talks, probably starting late this decade, will be about when it is time to start geoengineering, and what techniques should be used, and who controls the process. They won’t agree on that either, so things will drag on further until some government, desperate to save its people from starvation, decides to do it alone, without global agreement. That could cause a major war, of course. So we had better hope that neutral observers like the fossil fuel industries are right in insisting that global warming is a fraud. Maybe all those scientists really are making it up just to get more money in research grants. That would be a happy ending, so fingers crossed. Truth first casualty in F-35 fiasco

An editorial from the Toronto Star They don’t call the F-35 a “stealth” fighter for nothing. Years after Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s Conservative government identified the warplane as the only viable one for Canada, and shouted down critics who dared to say otherwise, Canadians still haven’t got a clue as to the true cost of each plane. We don’t know how many we can afford. We don’t even know whether we’ll buy it at all. We’re flying blind. The F-35 may prove one day to be the most fearsome bird in the sky, but it is also proving to be a bit too stealthy, in too many ways. A plane the Conservatives originally said would cost $9 billion may end up costing $40 billion over its life cycle, a sticker shock that has sent

the Harper government into damage control, scrambling to consider cheaper options. Defence Minister Peter MacKay has been fatally discredited by his obtuse handling of this file to replace our aging CF-18 fighters. From the get-go, the Tories and the military kept the public in the dark, issued slippery, lowball cost estimates, played down development problems and tried to discredit anyone who doubted that the F-35 was the only plane worth considering. Costing the F-35 is a tricky, politicized business. Initially, the Tories publicly pegged the deal at $9 billion, or $16 billion over the life of the jets. But it took Auditor General Michael Ferguson to put the true “full life-cycle cost” at $25 billion over 20 years. Ottawa is now sitting on

a KPMG study that reportedly pegs it at $40 billion over 42 years. Stung by the truth, the Tories have been dragged kicking and screaming to where they should have been years ago: kicking the tires on other warplanes, instead of solesourcing a new plane. However you work the bottom line, the F-35 has become a pricey political fiasco. Canadians deserve better, going forward. We need an apples-toapples comparison of the unit costs, plus the full life-cycle costs, of each of the planes being considered. And we need to know what benefits manufacturers are prepared to offer to get our business. So far, the only thing the F-35 has shot down is the Harper government’s credibility. And they’re not out of the line of fire yet.

TRAIL SMOKE EATERS

Sandler finds scoring touch Smokies on three game win streak BY JIM BAILEY

Times Sports Editor

The Trail Smoke Eaters are streaking in the right direction this week, thanks to a pair of double-overtime wins. Garrett McMullen, Brent Baltus, and Tyler Berkholz had big games last week in leading the Smokies to 2-1 and 6-5 victories over Vernon and Langley, but it was Luke Sandler who led the team with five points over the three games. Sandler may have felt a little out of his element when first arriving in Trail, but he has certainly grown more comfortable in recent weeks, as he piled up four goals and an assist to lead the Smokies to three wins in its last three starts. The 19-year-old forward banged in the tying goal late in the third period, to send a 5-5 game against Langley on Friday into overtime, where defenceman Braden Pears would ice it for the Smokies in double OT. Sandler’s contibution has been significant lately and includes a hat trick in a 6-3 win against league-leading Chilliwack last week, in addition to the tying goal against Langley. “It was nice (his first BCHL hat trick), it took a while, but it was nice,” said Sandler. Sandler has racked up 16 points in the last 17 games, after netting just three points in his first 10 as a Smokie, and while it may have taken a little time to get comfortable, he is feeling much more at home now. “It’s a role I usually come into,” he said. “I’ve been lucky enough here to finally start contributing . . . I was pretty quiet at first, and wasn’t really happy, but now it’s kind of nice to see it start happening.” The Smoke Eaters picked up Sandler in a Sept. 20 trade with Cowichan Valley Capitals for the rights to Travis Stephens. Sandler, a native of Chicago, Ill., played in the U.S. Junior Hockey League with stints in Des Moines, Iowa, Tri City, Wash., and Fargo N.D., before crossing the 49th parallel for a brief stay in Cowichan. The rugged forward has been a welcome fixture up front, combining physical play and 51 penalty minutes to go with a scoring touch that has netted him 12 goals and nine assists this season. Incidentally, Stephens, now with the Coquitlam Express, has just three goals. “It’s good for him to get back to putting the puck in the net,” said assistant coach Brent Heaven. “We’ve been talking to him about shooting the puck a lot more. He likes to kind of dangle guys so being a big body like he is - sixfoot-two, 200 pounds - he needs to buy into that power-forward role and he’s starting to do that.” With injuries and illness hurting the Smokies of late, line juggling has been a necessity, but the team has adapted and showed a lot of character in the late comeback wins. “We got behind the eight ball a little bit early, but it was good to see we could battle back,” said Heaven. “I think it’s the sixth time this year that we’ve been losing going into the third period and we came back to win so it builds some confidence in the guys and obviously getting four points on a crucial weekend was big.” Trail is looking to continue its run this week when it plays four games in five days beginning Friday in West Kelowna against the Warriors, then returning home for three games against Vernon Saturday, Nanaimo Sunday, and Merritt on Tuesday. Skip Deane Horning lines up a shot as Kimberley’s Tom Buchy checks out the line over his shoulder. Horning would make the right call, as his rink went on to defeat Buchy 7-5 at the Mens’ Kootenay playdowns at the Trail Curling Rink on Sunday.

Horning prevails, off to provincials BY JIM BAILEY

Times Sports Editor

The Deane Horning rink bounced back from an earlier loss to Kimberley’s Tom Buchy to defeat his long-time nemesis in the final of the Men’s Kootenay playdowns on Sunday. The win automatically qualifies the Horning rink for a trip to the provincial curling title in Parksville in March. The winning foursome comprised of skip Deane Horning, third Don Freschi, second Rob Nobert, lead Adam Wood, and fifth Kevin Nesbitt went a combined 4-1 over the weekend, but the team put together arguably their best effort in the final match against Buchy. Brilliant and timely shot-making by Freschi of Trail helped the Horning rink score three in the eighth end to break open a tight 3-3 match and send the former B.C. champs to a 7-5 victory. “We made some really nice shots in there, and we got a couple doubles, and we popped them for three which is really, really good,” said Freschi. Buchy third Dave Stephenson came up a little light as he curled around a guard to tap back his yellow. With two reds guarded in the four foot, one as shot and the other as third stone, Freschi stepped up and threw a laser that sent Buchy’s outside yellow rock careening out of the rings and the other yellow sideways, narrowly slipping between the two reds, to leave the

Horning rink counting three. Buchy tried for the double, but only got the one red, leaving Horning a draw for three. “They are turning points, you get a couple of their rocks out of the house it’s always good for us,” said Freschi. Buchy was setting up for a big end in the ninth, when Freschi made a third straight double in as many ends to clear out two yellow stones. Horning then made a delicate hit and roll for shot, yet the unflappable Buchy came around and tapped the red rock back for two, to make it 6-5. Nevertheless, Horning was in perfect shape coming home with hammer. Buchy’s front end set it up well, placing rocks in the 12-foot and a couple long guards. However a Buchy raise was heavy leaving Horning covered and biting the button for shot. Horning put up a guard, leaving Buchy a difficult angle raise. He struck it thin giving Horning the victory. “Every time we play Tom (Buchy) it’s a good game, he has a great curling team,” added Freschi. “We’ve been tight all the time. Me and Dean (Horning) were talking about that, every time we played it’s been high-scoring games but the last two have been pretty low, but always great games against those guys.” The Horning rink beat Brian LeMoel’s Trail rink in the first draw 11-3, then took out Nichol 10-8 to send him to the A Event final which he lost to Buchy

5-4. Horning then played Tom Shypitka rink from Creston for the B Event to see who would play Buchy in the first playoff final. Horning outlasted Shypitka 9-7, sending the Creston rink to the C Event final against the Nichol rink. Nichol needed three in the eighth to take a 7-6 lead and two more in the tenth for the victory and the 9-7 win. Buchy however would spoil Nichol’s run, with a 7-2 victory in the page playoff, and will join the Horning rink in the provincial championship. Horning has been on a B.C. Championship team three times, two with Pat Ryan and once in 2005 skipping his own rink with Nelson’s Fred Thompson as third, Freschi second, Rob Nobert lead, and Grant Fines fifth. The team is hoping this year will see another return to the dance, as the Tim Horton’s Brier just happens to be hosted by Edmonton, the same city that held the 2005 Brier when Horning’s team finished in fifth spot just out of the playoffs with a 6-5 record. “In 2005 we’ve been to the brier, we’ve been in the provincials a few times after that and been close, but hopefully this year we put it together and get back. We got the team, and it’s in Edmonton again so maybe that’s a good luck charm,” added Freschi. The last B.C. Team to win the Brier was Greg McAulay’s team in 2000.

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

SEATTLE - Jason Bay took a glance at the Seattle Mariners’ 40-man roster and suddenly realized how unique he will be. He’s one of only two players on that current roster who was born in the 1970s. “I don’t feel like I’m that old, but I guess I am around here,” the 34-year-old Bay said Monday. While he may not exactly fit the Mariners’ model on relying on youth to rebuild, Bay could fill a significant need for Seattle next season. He was introduced on Monday after his oneyear contract with the Mariners was finalized over the weekend. Bay said he hopes a fresh start with the Mariners can put three

seasons of struggles mostly due to injuries - with the New York Mets in the past. “Wherever I ended up was going to be a fresh start and the chance to do it here in my backyard, so to speak, will be nice,” said Bay, who grew up in Trail and played college ball at Gonzaga. “That’s all I was looking for. It didn’t work out for whatever reason and it was kind of a mutual split. I want to start fresh and wipe the slate clean and that’s what I get to do here.” After signing a $66 million, four-year deal before the 2010 season, the three-time All-Star hit .234 in three injury-plagued seasons with 26 homers and 124 RBIs, including a .165 average with eight homers and 20 RBIs this year. Sidelined by concussions and rib injuries, he played just 288 games for the Mets. Bay’s contract with the Mets was terminated last month. It also made Bay a low-risk, potential high-reward deal for whoever he signed with. An All-Star in 2005, 2006 and 2009, Bay signed with the Mets after hitting .267 in his final season for Boston with career bests of 36 homers and 119 RBIs.

“I got banged up a little bit. Not an excuse, just the reality and that didn’t help. I don’t think that was the No. 1 reason,” Bay said. “I just think I couldn’t really get on track. I was always stuck in one gear and I couldn’t get going.” Because of his injury history, the Mariners went to great lengths once an agreement was reached. Bay was examined by two team doctors and a neurosurgeon to make sure he was fully recovered from the concussion problems that lingered during his time with the Mets. Bay said he’s been fully engaged in his off-season workout program for the last six weeks. “I’ve gotten great reports on his winter program, what he’s doing right now being very prepared for the season,” Seattle general manager Jack Zduriencik said. “It just feels like the right thing to do.” Bay said he’ll take whatever role he can earn with Seattle, even if that means being in a platoon in the outfield. Manager Eric Wedge said if Bay can revert to the form he had in Boston and Pittsburgh, he could be exactly the right-handed bat the Mariners lineup needs.

THE CANADIAN PRESS OTTAWA, Ont. - The CBC is considering creating a customer “loyalty” program as it bleeds revenues from the NHL lockout and struggles with deep federal budget cuts. The Crown corporation has formally asked qualified private-sector firms for information about how such a program might work to grab more viewers and listeners - and bring in more cash. The notice suggests the CBC is considering adding game-like challenges on its websites, offering reward points to keep people engaged with the broadcaster’s programming, an approach known in the retail business as “gamification.” The sparsely worded notice suggests CBC reward points could be cashed in for branded merchandise now offered through the corporation’s web-based cbcshop.ca, and through its three retail outlets in Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal. The initial proposal is for the CBC’s English services, with a possible expansion to broadcaster’s French-language arm. The corporation is asking for responses to its industry call for information by Jan. 25. The CBC “has a number of loyalty-like initiatives in production to support programming and to increase audience engagement, but many are short-lived around specific events,” says the notice. The proposal is “to gather best practices from best-of-class firms within the loyalty vertical to assess the opportunity for the Corporation to implement a comprehensive loyalty program.” The corporation is releasing details of the proposals only to qualified firms who step forward. “At this stage, it’s just a request for information where we’re looking to see whether or not setting up this kind of program is worth the investment,” CBC spokesman Chuck Thompson said in an emailed response to questions. “CBC is always looking for new opportunities to have a deeper level of engagement with our audience and new ways to raise revenue.”

Leave immature friends behind and look for new ones Mailbox

Marcy Sugar & Kathy Mitchell

my friends, who have known me since we were children, don’t seem to care that the majority of their plans include activities that will make me physically ill. I have offered to host get-togethers at my home, but one of my friends told me my house “smells funny.” When I ask friends, family or co-workers to lay off the perfume or air freshener, I hear, “You’re the only one who complains.” Even my sister douses herself in a perfume that gives me hives and then gets insulted that I don’t want to hug her. How do I explain to my friends that their idea of fun literally makes me

yourself. Isn’t this rude? -- Flummoxed in Florida Dear Florida: The idea of showers (bridal or baby) was for friends to help a new couple stock their home or prepare for the new child by voluntarily gifting them with things they would need. This sweet, helpful welcome has somehow morphed into the idea that people are entitled to demand gifts for every occasion. Throwing oneself a baby shower smacks of greed. It says, “I expect you to give me presents.” However, it’s possible that none of their friends offered to help and they thought it would be OK to do it themselves. Whether to attend is up to you. Dear Annie: “Old Enough” didn’t want her parents to visit her in Europe during her son’s spring break because he needed to study for his SATs. That letter took the cake. During the lifetime of one’s parents, children should adjust their

schedules to accommodate those who sacrificed so much for them. What a lame excuse about the son wanting to study for SAT and AP exams. There are plenty of places he can go to study without interruptions. -- Parent

Dear Parent: We disagree. Children should, of course, make accommodations for their parents whenever possible. But when Mom and Dad can visit at any time and deliberately choose to come on precisely those days that their daugh-

ter has asked them not to shows a lack of consideration and respect. Parents who want to maintain a healthy relationship with their children should not stomp all over them.

sick? I’m starting to feel very left out because of my disease. -- Shouldn’t Be Limited by Lupus Dear Not Limited: Your friends seem a bit immature, which makes them too focused on their own enjoyment and less sympathetic toward you. Do they know you have lupus? (Saying that you can’t drink or are sensitive to cologne might seem optional to them.) When you can participate without too much risk, you should make the effort, but otherwise, we recommend you start looking for better friends. For additional assistance and support, try the Lupus Foundation of America (lupus.org). Dear Annie: A coworker and her husband are expecting a baby in late December and decided to throw themselves an elaborate baby shower. They have plenty of friends, relatives and colleagues who could have given them a shower. I have never heard of giving one for

Dear Annie: I’m 27 and have lupus, a chronic autoimmune disease. My condition is usually under control, and I live a normal life. The problem is, I’m very sensitive to perfume, air fresheners and cigarette smoke, and with my medications, I can’t drink alcohol. A lot of my girlfriends throw candle parties and cosmetic parties or go out drinking, all of which involve things I react badly to. I typically decline these invitations, suggest something else or go along and stay silent so I won’t be a wet blanket. At a recent cosmetic party, I stupidly allowed a friend to smear makeup on me after being goaded into it. Within seconds, my face and scalp were burning, and I jumped up and stuck my head under the faucet. Everybody laughed, except the hostess, who was “deeply offended.” I haven’t been invited to any parties since. It upsets me that

In Loving Memory of Mother

Irene Weishaupt April 14, 1931 to December 11, 2011

A year has passed and you’re on a new journey. We are all meant to learn some things, but never meant to stay. If I had a single flower for the times I thought of you, our tears and our laughter together and called your name out loud, I could walk forever in my garden. Miss you dearly, but we will laugh & cry again Mom. Love your daughter Gail and her children and grandchildren.
