Single dad Derek Hoare has spent 18 months fighting the Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD) to return his autistic daughter home. Last week, they signed an agreement to do so, just three days before the trial on the matter was to begin. Hoare is now making plans to bring his little girl, Ayn Van Dyk, almost 11 years old, back where he has always said she belongs – with him and her two brothers. Hoare said the ministry has agreed to pay for intensive in-home support for Ayn and one of her siblings, who also has autism. The final details are being worked out, and then Ayn will return to her dad’s care. “I think it’s going to go really, really well,” Hoare said, although he is angry that it took so long to get to this point. school by MCFD representatives in June 2011 after Hoare refused to sign her over to their care. The removal came four days after Ayn had disappeared from her Mt. Lehman home for three hours, resulting in a search by the Abbotsford Police. She turned up safely in a neighbor’s backyard, but Hoare believes the incident – and episodes at school – were used as examples that he could not properly care for her. Ayn was placed in psychiatric care for several weeks for assessment, but has been in a foster home the majority of the time. The hospital evaluation concluded that Ayn showed no evidence of physical abuse or neglect. Hoare’s battle then went before the courts – a process that he attributes as the main reason it took so long to settle the case. Court dates

were adjourned several times, often resulting in delays of two or three months, with no recourse. In January of this year, a trial date was set for Dec. 7. Meanwhile, Hoare refused to visit his daughter without knowing if or when she would come home. He said a visit from him, without any answers, would

have distressed her and set her back. Instead, his exwife, who has publicly praised Hoare’s parenting abilities, maintained visitation and informed Hoare that Ayn carried his photo, spoke about him often, and asked about home. Hoare’s story gained international attention, primarily through a Facebook

page with almost 4,000 members, many of whom shared similar stories of their children with autism – and other disabilities – being removed from their care all over the world. Hoare, who now lives in Chilliwack, described the last 18 months as a “nightmare.” “The whole ordeal has been pretty trau-

matic and pretty eye-opening. I didn’t believe before that kids who are loved and cared for in their home can be taken away.” Even though his fight is nearing the end, Hoare said the stories he has heard from others and the connections he has made have inspired him to continue the battle. He wants to form an umbrella organization to push for legislative change and to “educate the populace.” He said, as the laws stand, it’s too easy for social workers to remove kids from their home without any scrutiny of their actions. “I don’t plan on walking away from this issue … I don’t think this is how this should work,” Hoare said.

The MCFD has a policy of not commenting publicly on individual cases.

Gibson wins Liberal nod for Abby-Mission riding Kevin MILLS Abbotsford News

Long-time Abbotsford Coun. Simon Gibson has won the BC Liberal Party nomination for the riding of Abbotsford-Mission. Gibson will attempt to take the seat being vacated by MLA Randy Hawes, who announced earlier this year that he would not seek another term. “This was a great nomination race that brought a lot of energy and excitement to the riding, and now I’m going to get working on re-electing a BC Liberal government in 2013,” said Gibson.

He won the nomination by only 13 votes, 93-80 over Mission Coun. Tony Luck. New to provincial politics, Gibson has only five months to prepare for next spring’s election. He also has to balance his time as a teacher at the University of the Fraser Valley and as a city councillor. Gibson plans to meet with Hawes in the coming days in order to discuss the riding in more detail. gibson If Gibson succeeds in winning the May election, he said he would step down as city councillor at the end of the year.

Impaired driving charges will likely be recommended against a man who drove into the back of a car stopped at a CounterAttack roadblock in Abbotsford on Saturday night. Const. Ian MacDonald said police are compiling the report for Crown counsel for charge approval. Meanwhile, the 26-yearold man has lost his driver’s licence. The incident occurred at about 10 p.m. on Riverside Street near King Road. MacDonald said about 140 cars had already gone through the area, which was well marked with pylons and lighting. He said the scene could be spotted from a distance, and some drivers

had even made U-turns to avoid being checked. Police were talking to a group of four young women in a 2008 Volvo when the driver of a 1992 Toyota 4Runner plowed into the back of them at

an estimated speed of 100 km/h. MacDonald said the five officers on the scene had to jump out of the way and narrowly missed being hit. The women in the Volvo were all wearing seatbelts

at the time of the crash and were not seriously injured. The man driving the SUV was the lone occupant of the vehicle, and was taken into custody at the scene. He has since been released. MacDonald said the driver has no prior record for impaired driving, although he has “one or two” charges related to being drunk in public. MacDonald said police will likely recommend two separate charges – impaired driving and driving with a blood-alcohol level of over .08. A conviction on a first offence for either of these charges carries a mandatory minimum sentence of a $1,000 fine and a driving ban of between one and three years.

A costly crossing opens The smile on the face of the premier illuminated the early morning gloom as the new Port Mann bridge was officially opened to eight lanes last week. It’s hard to say how long the honeymoon will last, especially when commuters and truckers start to see the effect the full cost of tolls will have on their wallets every month. Sensing the backlash that financial hit could spawn, crossing the bridge will be half price until Feb. 28 for drivers who haven’t registered for a special windshield sticker and until next November for those who have. The government is hoping if they get drivers hooked on the new bridge, they’ll pay whatever it takes to keep moving and won’t blink when they start getting dinged three bucks a crossing. But they may be underestimating the determination of Greater Vancouver motorists to drive for a bargain. Already burdened by the highest cost

of living in Canada, extracting another $1,500 a year out of the household accounts of regular users of the Port Mann could be one debit too much. Not to mention the increases in the cost of food and consumer goods that are transported by trucks over the bridge. Three years ago the tolled Golden Ears Bridge that links Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows to Highway 1 via Langley was opened with similar fanfare. Yet every morning, drivers heading west from those communities line up bumper-to-bumper on the Lougheed Highway to cross the free Pitt River bridge as the six lanes of the Golden Ears sit largely empty. While tolls help pay for the infrastructure we so desperately need to keep up with Greater Vancouver’s booming population, those tolls need to be kept affordable for all. – The Langley Times

Other Hand The province of Ontario, if the political winds of change occur, may soon allow the sale of beer, wine and spirits in grocery and corner stores. For this to occur, the Ontario Liberals, about to enter a leadership contest to determine a successor to soon-to-be departing Dalton McGuinty, must not only choose a new leader, but prepare for battle against the rival and rising PCs, whose leader is advocating a major relaxation of liquor laws in Canada’s most populous province. The prospect of this in Ontario raises the issue of British Columbia adopting a similar practice. It has often been proposed here, with good cause I might add, because of the convenience and it being something “whose time has come.”

There is, of course, the hand-wringing of ‘nervous Nellies’ who suggest wanton alcoholism among children, husbands spending their entire pay cheque on booze at the 7-11, and an easy and unnecessary temptation for recovering alcoholics. Sorry, but that scenario has no foundation. We already have beer and wine and private liquor stores in most every neighbourhood, and wineries with tasting rooms and sales counters scattered throughout the province. If we already have them, why not expand such sales to grocery and other stores, and make the purchase of alcohol truly convenient? Certainly those who own private liquor outlets will challenge any move towards this, as it would definitely take the profit out of their business operations. But wider sale of alcohol will not corrupt our society any further than it already does. Why would it be so shattering to our social mores to able to run into the local market to grab a bottle of wine or liquor, or if they don’t have exactly what you want, checking out the gas station next door, or the one across

the street rather than having to drive all over town to find a government or private liquor store? The destruction of society isn’t happening in Washington or most other states, and it isn’t happening in the Fraser Valley either, because you can

The little community of Yarrow has not one, but three liquor agencies, one in the grocery, and two in neighbouring gas bars. I don’t see young kids falling down drunk in the community park, and I don’t see the residents of Yarrow awash in alcoholism. What they have, at government li-

quor store prices, is convenience – the convenience of adding to your grocery or gas purchase rather than being required to drive into Abbotsford or Chilliwack to buy a bottle of wine or whiskey. So if it’s good for that little village, founded by the way on the strict religious tenets of the Mennonite faith, the proponents of whom are probably now rolling over in their graves, why shouldn’t it be “good” for the rest of us to have the same simplicity of convenience? Are grocery store operators any more or less inclined to check the ID of minors than are those who work in the existing private liquor stores? No, particularly if there is a law accompanying the relaxation of sales that says one offence and you lose the right to sell booze forever. If it can work, and it does, in a suburb of Abbotsford, and in little communities throughout the province that are not close to a government liquor store, then why shouldn’t it work, and be available, everywhere?

letters Put the brakes on YMCA project Re: Approval in principal for new YMCA. Residents of all ages enjoy wonderful, reasonably priced fitness facilities provided by the existing Abbotsford recreation centres. They are fully equipped, staffed with fully trained, friendly assistants, and in my experience as an almost daily visitor, seldom used to capacity. In addition, Abbotsford has a good selection of privately run fitness centres.

The proposed additional facilities to be provided by the YMCA are therefore, not necessary – especially when prioritized by common-sense citizens against the need for improved local police facilities, and road improvements, etc. Should the building of a YMCA be completed, rather than encourage a desirable rush of new fitness enthusiasts, it will surely result in loss of revenue for city/taxpayer-funded rec centres, and

have a detrimental effect on established fitness-related businesses. As politician-weary citizens already know from past budget projections made by government professionals and their high-priced consultants, be it related to the purchase of fighter planes, or locally, financing of our entertainment centre/Abbotsford Heat hockey club,

such projections must be expected to prove alarmingly underestimated. Taxpayers have learned to project with confidence that many government projections will be underestimated! We need to put a brake on council’s apparent enthusiasm to rush into the approval of this unnecessary expenditure. Tony Jones

Approximately 23 kilograms of cocaine was discovered by border crossing officers inside the walls of a commercial trailer.

Cocaine in trailer Truck driver arrested

Officers at the AbbotsfordHuntingdon border crossing seized approximately 23 kilograms of suspected cocaine hidden in the trailer of a commercial vehicle carrying produce on Dec. 3. Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) officers discovered the drugs while searching a commercial truck and trailer. During the examination, anomalies were detected within the wall of the trailer. The load – produce from California – was fully offloaded, and after officers inspect-

ed the truck and trailer, they drilled into the wall of the trailer. The drill bits hit a white powder, and officers discovered 23 cellophane-wrapped bricks of suspected cocaine inside a void in the wall. The CBSA arrested the driver of the truck and turned the drugs and driver over to police in Canada for further investigation. In the last five years, CBSA officers in the Pacific Region have seized more than two tonnes of cocaine.

An Abbotsford man who was found guilty of running a marijuana grow-op has received an 18month conditional sentence (house arrest) and has had his home seized. Alan Thomas Smith, 62, was found guilty in B.C. Supreme Court in Chilliwack of marijuana production and possession for the purposes of

trafficking. More than 300 plants with an estimated street value of between $76,000 and $153,000 were found in his residence. The sentence was issued Nov. 9, but the judge’s written reasons were not posted online until last week. Smith testified at his trial that he is the sole employee of a home repair business. His wife,

That home was then sold as the subject of a civil forfeiture claim in which the provincial government

can go after the proceeds of crime. The judge said he sentenced Smith to house arrest, rather than jail time, because he has no prior criminal record, and he is the main caregiver for his wife. Grist also said that the consequences of Smith’s arrest and prosecution make it unlikely that he will re-offend. During the first six months of his sentence, Smith is prohibited from leaving his home except between the hours of noon and 2 p.m. or for his hours of employment. For the rest of his sentence, he must follow a daily curfew from 6 p.m. to 8 a.m.

Staff at Kryton International Inc. are holding their annual “gender challenge” this month to raise funds for Canuck Place Children’s Hospice. The company, which provides concrete waterproofing systems around the world, is sponsoring the agency’s Light up their Lives Campaign, which involves selling sponsorship to decorate the hospice in Vancouver.

The genders are battling it out in some friendly competition, raising funds through direct donations, fundraising activities and a contribution from the company. Kryton donated $2,500 to this year’s campaign, lighting up 500 lights on Canuck Place in Vancouver, as well as donating concrete waterproofing product to the new facility under construction in Abbotsford.

Roman Horak’s power-play goal late in the third period lifted the Abbotsford Heat to a 3-2 road victory over the Toronto Marlies on Sunday. The Marlies had rallied from a two-goal deficit in the final frame, but with Toronto defenceman Paul Ranger in the penalty box, Horak collected a rebound off Ben Walter’s initial shot and put a shot past goalie Ben Scrivens with 2:35 remaining in regulation. The Heat (14-4-5, 33 points) snapped a three-game losing streak and moved back into

first place in the AHL overall standings. Toronto (13-91, 27 points) sits second in the North Division b e h i n d Abbotsford. Secondperiod goals by Max Reinhart and Ben Street had staked HORAK the Heat to a 2-0 lead, but the Marlies battled back to knot the score on strikes by Greg McKegg

Heat to host teddy bear toss Friday’s game vs. the Texas Stars marks the Heat’s second annual teddy bear toss, which benefits the Abbotsford Christmas Bureau. Fans are encouraged to bring a new or gently used stuffed toy to toss on the ice after the home team's first goal of the night. The teddy bears will be collected and donated to Abbotsford families in need. Last year, the Abbotsford Christmas Bureau helped 837 families,

including 1,419 children and 65 seniors. Approximately half of the families were sponsored, and the other half came directly to the food bank to collect their Christmas food hampers and gifts. Heat president Ryan Walter said the teddy bear toss event is part of making Abbotsford "a better place to live." "This spirit of giving is incredibly important during the holiday season," he said. The weekend also

features a two-for-one ticket deal. When fans purchase a ticket for the teddy bear toss game, they get a free ticket to Saturday’s

game. If they cannot attend, they can donate the ticket to the United Way and give a Christmas outing to a family in need.

With his team having reeled off seven wins in a row, Abbotsford Pilots head coach Jim Cowden’s take on the situation is terrible news for opposing teams. “All-around, we’re a better hockey club than we were last year,” Cowden said. That’s some high praise, since the Pilots won both the Cyclone Taylor Cup provincial championship and the Keystone Cup, emblematic of Western Canadian junior B supremacy, in 2011-12. But looking at the numbers, Cowden might have a point. The Pilots lead the Pacific Junior Hockey League in goals scored (117) and goals against (54), and they’re on an 11-1-1 tear since the start of November. Abbotsford is tops in the PJHL with 40 points on the strength of a 19-6-2 record, though the Richmond Sockeyes (19-5-1, 39 points) have two games in hand. “You can have the most talented team, but if they’re not on the same page, it doesn’t work,” Cowden said. “These guys work hard, they support each other. “We can play really any style, whether it’s the physical aspect or the finesse aspect. We’ve got the grit, our D doesn’t give up a lot of chances, and our goaltending’s good.” The Pilots continued their hot play with a pair of weekend wins at MSA Arena – 5-1 over the Grandview Steelers on Friday, and 7-2 over the Ridge Meadows Flames on Saturday. Mike Tebbutt (one goal, two assists) and Adam Rossi (three assists) notched three points apiece vs. Grandview, while Kyle Star scored twice. OLIVER, Thelma Irene passed peacefully into the Lord’s presence from Tabor Home on December 2, 2012. Thelma was born in Red Deer, Alberta on Jan. 23, 1923 to Ellen & William McLean, the 2nd of 6 children. Around the age of 9, during the depression, her father passed away leaving her mother with the 6 children to maintain the farm. Thelma left the farm at the age of 20 and pursued her studies in Edmonton & Vancouver. During this time she accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Saviour and had a great desire to serve Him by telling others about Him. She attended the Vancouver Bible Institute and the Missionary Health Institute in Lansing, Ont. Thelma left for India in December 1952 spending Christmas on board the ship. She served almost 40 years in India. It was in India that Thelma met her sweetheart Tom Oliver. They were married for almost 3 years when Tom passed away from cancer. Thelma leaves to mourn her sister, Phyllis, of Abbotsford, Sister-in-law Lena of Winnipeg MB, and Sister-inlaw Pauline of Nanaimo, BC. She will also be greatly missed by 2 nieces and 8 nephews, their spouses and children. A celebration of Thelma’s life will be held Thursday, Dec. 13 at 11 a.m. in the Clearbrook Mennonite Brethren Church, 2719 Clearbrook Rd., Abbotsford, B.C. Refreshments to follow. Adriana Hallson (nee Smid) beloved wife, daughter, sister, auntie, and step-mom was called home unexpectedly on December 6, 2012 surrounded by the company of her family. Adriana was born in Richmond on February 17, 1967 and lived her early years in Langley where she attended Fraser Valley Christian High School. She later went on to get her degree in religious education at Reformed Bible College in Grand Rapids, Michigan where she was active in the choir. She spent her life serving others working as a caregiver for disabled adults with Bethesda Christian Association where she made many friends with staff, parents and other individuals, cared for and worked as the Sunday school teacher for her church. Her stories of the pranks the individuals she cared for could bring a smile to whoever she spoke with. She will be remembered fondly for her bubbly nature, bright colours, infectious laugh, kind words and unshakeable faith. She was a true friend to those she knew and her voice raised in song was wonder to hear. She is survived by her husband Doug, and step-children Graham, Charlotte, Sarah, and Grant, her mother Audrey Hovenkamp, sister Paula Norder and nieces Jessica and Danika, sister Jacqueline Doppenberg (Gerard) and niece Edin, and her brother Henrick as well as numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. We will miss you dearly. Jordan Sigalet can’t help but chuckle when he’s asked about the extra layer of complexity his job has taken on this season. The Abbotsford Heat’s goalie coach has presided over a three-headed netminding monster this season, comprised of Barry Brust, Danny Taylor and Leland Irving. All three are seasoned pros, and the situation – an offshoot of the NHL lockout – has certainly tested Sigalet’s versatility as a coach. “You’ve got Barry, who’s pretty aggressive and has a totally different style, pretty unorthodox,” Sigalet said with a grin, reflecting on the varied goaltending styles he’s responsible for sharpening. “Leland’s obviously a really athletic goaltender – he got some NHL experience last year, so he’s really hungry to get in there. “And then there’s Danny, who’s nice and calm and con-

trolled. It’s a great mix.” Three-goalie systems are thought to be unwieldy and unworkable, but against the odds and with only a limited number of hiccups, the Heat have made it work for them. The numbers don’t lie – Abbotsford is tops in the AHL in goals-against, allowing just 1.96 goals per game. Within this unique goalie ecosystem, Sigalet has detected some interesting growth. “They pick up different things from each other, and you can see it in their game,” he said. “Watching Barry poke check, the other two are starting to pull out the odd poke check here and there. It’s exciting to see that, because it shows they’re students of the game.” Let’s take a closer look at the trio. old AHL record for longest shutout streak. He kept opposing teams off the board for 268 minutes and 17 seconds comprising parts of five games, surpassing Bower’s mark of 249:51. Along the way, Brust became a folk hero among Heat fans for his gregarious nature – after breaking the record, he attributed his success to “a strategically placed horseshoe.” He’s also a humble gent, deflecting the kudos at every opportunity. “I can’t say enough about how well-coached we are and how well-structured we are,” he said. “One of the nice things about the streak is, it put a spotlight on that.” Brust has won seven of eight starts, and his numbers are impeccable – he leads the entire AHL in both goalsagainst average (1.12) and save percentage (.951).

Sigalet reaches out to Harding Heat goalie coach knows what it’s like to get MS diagnosis

Abbotsford Heat goaltending coach Jordan Sigalet has had a Twitter account for months now, but it wasn't until Nov. 28 that he felt the need to cross over from observer to active participant. "Thoughts go out to Josh Harding of the Minnesota Wild tonight who was recently diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis," Sigalet said in his first-ever tweet, via his @JMSigalet feed. Harding, the Wild's backup goalie, had disclosed that he'd been diagnosed with MS two months ago. It's an inflammatory disease which attacks the body's immune system and affects the central nervous system. As a former pro goalie living with the disease, Sigalet is perhaps the only person on the planet who can under-

stand exactly what Harding is going through. Back in 2003, Sigalet was a promising Boston Bruins prospect at Bowling Green State University when he was told he had MS. He kept it a secret for nine months, fearful that the Bruins would give up on him. But Sigalet eventually went public with his MS battle, and he became an inspirational figure to many people suffering from the disease. He continued his playing career, spending three years in the Bruins' minor league system and getting into one NHL game. He also started a foundation, Shut Out MS, which stages a dinner and charity hockey game in Burnaby every second year. "It made things real for me again

– what I went through when I was diagnosed," Sigalet said, reflecting on how he felt when news of Harding's MS broke. "I know exactly what he's feeling. It's great that he's got unbelievable support from his teammates, the organization and obviously his family." Sigalet planned to get in touch with Harding directly once things had calmed down, and his main message is that it's possible to live a normal life and manage the disease. "It's not a life sentence, obviously," he said. "He's caught it early and he's going to get treatment early, and it's going to make a big difference in his life. Once he learns his body and how the disease is going to take its course, I think he's going to be able to have a long, good career still ahead of him.”

Goalies a pillar of Heat’s success this season From B3 TAYLOR TERRIFIC While Brust’s shutout streak has hogged much of the limelight, Taylor also deserves kudos for his strong start. He earned the No. 1 job out of training camp, which considering the level of competition is a huge feather in his cap. And while Taylor’s numbers don’t sparkle quite as brightly as Brust’s, they’re still beyond reproach – his goals-against average (1.69) is second-best in the AHL, and his save percentage (.933) ranks fourth.

“I think we’re all adults here,” Taylor said, reflecting on the three-way competition for playing time. “We all want to be the guy, but at the same time, you have to be respectful of everybody else. It’s healthy competition, and I think the way it’s been so far has been good. Barry and Leland are not only great goalies, but great people.” IRVING FINDING HIS WAY Irving is the only goalie on the roster with a two-way NHL contract, but he’s been outplayed by the other two to this

point, as his numbers would indicate (3.33 goals against average, .884 save percentage). But both Sigalet and head coach Troy Ward believe that Irving’s play isn’t cause for alarm. He’s been lit up his last two starts, but prior to that, his save percentage was a solid .922. “I believe Irv can win 10 straight for our hockey team,” Ward asserted. “But right now, the other two (Brust and Taylor) seem to make the game a little simpler and seem to have better control at this point in

Being called into the head coach’s office doesn’t always portend good news, but for Brandon Daase, a chat with Abbotsford Pilots bench boss Jim Cowden took his hockey career in a welcome new direction. Daase had served as a thirdline checker and penalty-killing specialist for the Pilots in 201112, and played a key supporting role as the team won both the Cyclone Taylor Cup and the Keystone Cup, emblematic of provincial and Western Canadian junior B hockey supremacy, respectively. The substance of Cowden’s training-camp message to Daase, though, was that he needed more from him offensively. The Pilots’ entire top line from the season before – Riley Lamb, Justin Dorey and Kevin Lourens – had exhausted their junior eligibility, leaving a scoring void that needed filling. Daase was thrilled Cowden was looking to him to step up, and he currently finds himself fifth in team scoring with 22 points (seven goals, 15 assists) in 27 games.
