Abbotsford’s explorations in leaving the Fraser Valley Regional District may be coming to an end. A staff report, scheduled to be presented on Monday, is recommending the city remain as part of the FVRD. Early in 2011, council and then-Mayor George Peary directed city staff to examine the financial implications of leaving the district to become a single-tier governance. It was believed that the move would save taxpayers as much as $750,000 annually. In 2010, Abbotsford contributed approximately $3 million to the district. A majority of council felt the city could provide the same level of services, such as 911 and fire dispatch, mosquito control, and regional planning, for a lower cost. However, in 2012, new Mayor Bruce Banman and the city manager met with Ida Chong, then Minister of Community Sport and Cultural Development. As she hands out one of her last treats to another young smiling face, Kirichenko offers a hearty thank you as the familiar rattle of change temporarily replaces her chimes. Kirichenko is just one of the many members of the Northview Community Church who are donating their time this holiday season to work the Salvation Army’s Red Kettle campaign. It’s the church’s third year taking on the PriceSmart location for the Salvation Army, Kirichenko said. She says she’s more than happy to give up two hours from her day to help the Sally Ann, especially because of her experiences last year. Kirichenko wasn’t able to work the kettle last year because of her job in the retail sector. She said she didn’t like what she saw. “As the season wore on, it was all about greed and profits. People just kept buying, and companies care too much about profits,” she said. “There was no sense of the spirit of the season. It makes your heart sick.” Now she dispenses kind words and candy canes to customers making their way in to shop for groceries, regardless if they donate or not. For Kirichenko, the opportunity to reach out to the people of her community is too

good to pass up. “The Salvation Army does such tremendous work. We help raise the money but they know where all the nickels and dimes need to go. They’re the ones connected to the community and the people who need it most. So for me, it’s a chance to just talk to people and maybe brighten up their day.” Greg Harris, director of local missions for the Northview Community Church, says their congregation chooses to help the Salvation Army because their faith and commitment to community are so closely aligned.

“They have such a steadying influence in the community,” said Harris. “The people at our church want to be involved in making this a better place to live and this is an easy way to help out and connect with people. For me seeing people respond with such generosity is great.” The Salvation Army’s goal is to raise more than $500,000 in donations, whether it’s through its traditional storefront kettles, or through direct donations. In addition, the Salvation Army also has its new countertop kettles that businesses

can leave at the front desk for customers to contribute. Deb Lowell, public relations director at the Abbotsford Salvation Army, says while the goal of raising a half-million dollars is critical to the organization if it hopes to maintain its level of service in Abbotsford, she understands they have a difficult road ahead. “The challenge is that there are many, many wonderful charities receiving donations throughout the city. We don’t want to wear out our donors, but at the same time, our demands have never

been higher,” said Lowell. She said the relief of having the Northview Community Church take over the PriceSmart means she has one less location to worry about, which is crucial come Christmas time. She estimates the Salvation Army needs about 4,000 hours of volunteer time for the 14 Red Kettle locations in Abbotsford and Mission. “The congregation at Northview have been super supportive of what we do,” said Lowell. “Going forward, we would like to use them as a model for what other churches and business can do. The people of Abbotsford are incredibly generous.” While cash is always king, Lowell said for those who can’t afford to donate or have given their money elsewhere, they can always contribute their time. She said there is a preconceived notion that if you are working a kettle, you have to ask people for money. However, she said a simple hello or Merry Christmas is really all that’s expected. The program is so well known and respected that most of the interaction with the public turns out to be friendly conversation. Kirichenko reiterates that point. “I’m such a talker. This gives me a venue for my big mouth,” she jokes.

Another factor in the recommendation is that the city will have a stronger voice on the FVRD. Due to the recent census, based on the city’s population, Abbotsford gets one more additional director at the table. Currently, Banman, along with Couns. Patricia Ross, John Smith, Simon Gibson and Moe Gill, are members of the board. Banman said it is likely the sixth member would be appointed on Monday night, if council approves the recommendation. Ross is the vice-chair of the FVRD and said she is relieved staff has made the recommendation to stay. “I’ve never thought it was a good idea to leave the FVRD, so I’m very pleased that finally we are giving up on that and giving some certainty to the FVRD.” She said it was difficult for the district to plan and budget for the future with the issue “hanging over its head.” Ross believes the motion will likely pass on Monday night. While the issue did cause some uncertainty, Ross believes it will only take a “little bit of fence-mending” for Abbotsford and the FVRD to move forward. “There have never been any nasty remarks or poor behaviour because of it,” she said. She believes both parties will “put it behind them” and “look forward to planning our future.” The FVRD consists of six municipalities – Abbotsford, Mission, Chilliwack, Hope, Kent and Harrison – and seven electoral areas. Each member community pays the FVRD user fees and a tax requisition based on population.

Two robberies in four days

Abbotsford Police believe that two robberies occurring within four days of each other could be connected. The first incident took place on Saturday, Dec. 1 at about 2:30 p.m., when two men entered a pharmacy in the 2000 block of McCallum Road. Const. Ian MacDonald said the men waited outside the store until it was empty. One of the suspects then approached the cashier, demanding cash,

while the second man stood just inside the front door. Both men wore dark clothing with hoodies and had their faces covered. MacDonald said no weapons were used and no staff members were injured. The men fled on foot, heading south on McCallum Road. The next robbery took place on Wednesday, Dec. 5 at about 10 p.m. Three men waited outside a pizza shop in the 33000 block of South Fraser Way

until no customers were left. Two of the men approached the cashier, and one of them brandished what appeared to be a handgun. The pair demanded cash, while the third suspect stood watch. APD set anti-crime standards Just a few short years ago, Abbotsford held the acutely uncomfortable title of “Murder Capital of Canada,” as dubbed by metro media. Unflattering to say the least, but fairly close to the mark. Gang-related warfare was raging around the Lower Mainland in 2008 through 2010, and Abbotsford was unfortunately a focal point, as the Red Scorpions, the UN gang, and others struggled for domination – primarily of the drug trade. The Abbotsford-Mission census metropolitan area (CMA) experienced four murders in 2010, 11 in 2009 and six in 2008. Compare that to last year’s one – which occurred inside a local prison. We are now among the 10 Canadian cities with the lowest murder rates. It’s a stunning turnaround. The key factor? The Abbotsford Police. The force has taken back the streets, through a multi-pronged approach of enforcement, arrests, surveillance,

and pressure tactics on known criminals, and a comprehensive program of awareness and education in local schools. The department set out to make Abbotsford an unpleasant place for gangsters and drug dealers to do business. They achieved it. Officers visited schools, talking with students and presenting a series of top-quality videos that exposed the gangster lifestyle as one that usually ends in prison or death. Clearly, all of these efforts were effective. During the same period, police arrested two of Abbotsford’s notorious Bacon brothers – both of whom are now in prison, either convicted of serious crimes or awaiting trial. A third was shot dead by rivals. Criminal volatility still exists here, but nevertheless, Abbotsford is a far safer place. Other cities that are still struggling with violence should take a page or two from the APD manual.

My View Seen the latest video of Toronto Mayor Rob Ford that’s gone viral? It features a press event before the Grey Cup in which Ford and some staff play a little football. He hikes the ball, goes back a few steps to make a pass, loses his balance and tumbles to the turf. Fat man falls. Ha ha. Because he’s offended so many people during his time in office, the humour – one assumes – is all the more rich. Regardless, the video spread around the world. Just before the U.S. election, late night TV funnyman Jimmy Kimmel’s crew hit the streets to ask people what they thought of the second presidential debate. The twist: the debate hadn’t actually happened yet. That didn’t stop people from commenting. People on camera said things like Obama came off better, and oh yes, the town-hall style event was much more

intimate than the previous one and so on. Funny. And yes, insightful about human behaviour. Yet it seems humour – from the things we share on social media to the reality shows we watch – is increasingly being characterized by the concept of mockery. Today we spend a lot of time laughing at people, and often, ridiculing them. Their foibles, their pettiness, their slip-ups. And what’s wrong with that, one might ask? I’m not sure. But somewhere in there, it feels off, somehow. It’s no revelation that we live in an age in which the lens is turned on ourselves and the world around us. We like it real. Reality TV, YouTube – real life is exciting. And as America’s Funniest Home Videos established years ago, we can be hilarious – particularly by accident. It’s one thing, though, to laugh at ourselves. In fact, it’s healthy and humbling. After all, “self-deprecating” is probably one of the more flattering things you can say about a person’s character. But what about when we turn it around? When we’re laughing at others? And what if they’re not laughing? It’s one thing when we laugh at a comedian on stage,

seeking to tickle our funny bone, but what if it’s just real folks going about life? When Franklin D. Roosevelt was U.S. president in the ’30s and early ’40s, the media never showed him in a wheelchair, or being carried, helping to hide the fact he was paralyzed. Perhaps it was media

Today we spend a lot of time laughing at people, and often, ridiculing them. collusion out of respect for office at a time when disabilities were seen differently. And it’s good today that we’ve broken many of those taboos, and acknowledge that frailty exists – even among those in highest office. But compare the Roosevelt situation to that in the Ford video. When we watch Ford tumble to the turf, what do we think? Fat idiot? Offensive words, but how far off the mark? When we giggle at the people on the street discussing an imaginary presidential debate don’t we, at very least,

think them foolish? So what, one might say. No harm done. But what if this trend is undermining our respect for others? What if it feeds this culture of mean that people are talking about, a culture of mockery that empowers the bullies, feeds concepts of “us and them,” lowers the tenor of public discourse and sends a message that it’s OK to celebrate when a person is hurt, and to laugh when they are embarrassed or humiliated? How is it different if an unpopular 10-year-old girl stumbles as she walks across the school stage, and the assembled students laugh, then schoolmates continue to badger her for weeks to come? But it is different, isn’t it? Rob Ford is a politician. He’s put himself on that platform. He’s exposed himself. And those people on the streets of L.A., they should have been honest and admitted they didn’t know there was a debate. And in those cases we’re talking about people in different cities, different situations. Not people in our local community. It’s different. Right? My kids will probably groan when they read this story, but it must be told. (Disclaimer alert…don’t let your kids read this!) This is my very first Christmas as an empty nester; and I’m far from happy about it. When they were younger I had them completely convinced that it was against “the law” for kids to move away from the town that their mother lives in. In exchange for your unwrapped toy, you will receive a return ticket for the West Coast Express – to be used the same day. As of 2010, the Santa Train has been expanded beyond its traditional toy drive role to include a food drive as well. As a result, between Dec. 8 and 15, canned goods and non-perishable food items can be dropped off at the food collec-

Nativity DriveThrough at church Abbotsford Christian Assembly holds its annual Nativity Drive-Through next week. The event runs from 6 to 10 p.m. on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday (Dec. 12 to 14) at the church, 3970 Gladwin Rd. There are 10 outdoor scenes portraying the Christmas story with live animals, lights, and actors dressed as Mary and Joseph, angels, wise men and shepherds. The public views the scenes from the comfort of their vehicles, and usually about 1,000 cars stop by. The church has been hosting the event for 22 years. It takes all year to prepare, and more than 75 people are involved. Admission is free with donations gratefully accepted for the Abbotsford Food Bank and the Salvation Army Christmas Kettle Campaign.

Canadian Blood Services’ (CBS) annual “Bleed and Feed” is back for the third year in a row with the goal of fulfilling 14,000 blood donations in the B.C. and Yukon. It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of Dusan and Trisha, they leave behind their son David James Sedlacek. Dusan is predeceased by his father Rudolf and survived by his mother Emilia, sister Dana Sedlackova and brothers Andy and Rudy. Trisha is survived by her mother and father Lloyd and Mia Vickers, brothers Norman, Ingo (Dee), Marco. And many other aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

MURDOCH Roderick Campbell (Cam) 1916 - 2012 Roderick Campbell (Cam) Murdoch passed away Nov 17 following a brief illness. He was 95 years old. He follows his first wife Lois, son David, and daughter Karen into the presence of Our Lord. He is survived by his wife Maureen and her family, his daughters Joanne, Charlotte and Eleanor, son Paul, twelve grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. He served as a missionary in various parts of the US and Canada, most recently serving with Shantymen’s Christian Association in BC. His goal in life was to share the good news of the Gospel. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, Dec 11, 2012 at the Clearbrook MB Church, 2719 Clearbrook Rd, Abbotsford.
