Full support for new casino Cloverdale Chamber, BIA issue joint statement
By Jennifer Lang Cloverdale’s business leaders are lending their support to the South Surrey casino proposal, citing assurances from government and gaming officials that the project will not be a detriment to Fraser Downs Racetrack and Casino, or the horse racing industry. Both the Cloverdale District Chamber of Commerce and the Cloverdale Business Improvement Association issued a joint statement in support of the $100 million proposal Monday, a day ahead of their colleagues at the Surrey Board of Trade and the White Rock/South Surrey Chamber of Commerce. In doing so, Cloverdale Chamber of Commerce president Addison Hubert said they hoped to demonstrate to Cloverdale residents – and the 400 employees who work at inside and along the backstretch at
Fraser Downs – that the proposed Gateway Casino and Entertainment Inc. complex will not harm their ability to make a living. It’s a change of heart from from earlier this year, when both the Chamber and the Cloverdale BIA pledged their support for Fraser Downs Racetrack and Casino as Surrey’s primary casino, arguing it should have first crack at expansion before another casino was built. But Hubert said after speaking with B.C. Lottery Corp. officials, they learned the current contract covering the support and subsidy for racing operations at Fraser Downs and at Hastings Park Racetrack will be extended for another 10 years. Hubert said the news was verified by Rich Coleman, provincial minister responsible for gaming. The outflow from the city of SurSee BUSINESS / Page 7

Hundreds of people watched the action at the Surrey Santa Parade of Lights in downtown Cloverdale on Sunday evening, the biggest Christmas parade ever, organizers say. A longer route and more entries made for a memorable evening, earning raves from participants and spectators alike.

Denzal Sinclaire performed with local students.
By Jennifer Lang Christmas concerts are meant to be uplifting, but yesterday, the Clayton Heights music department took the concept to a whole new level. With an award-winning Canadian jazz vocalist and a motivational speaker sharing the bill along with 250 band students, it definitely wasn’t your average high school Christmas concert. Special guest Denzal Sinclaire is a leading jazz vocalist, recording artist, pianist and composer who’s earned multiple Juno nominations, a 2004 National Jazz Award for best album, and has released three albums. His singing has been compared to Johnny Hartmann and Nat King Cole.

The BC/Yukon Command of the Royal Canadian Legion has a new home in Cloverdale. Last Friday, provincial command moved its headquarters to the heart of the historic town centre on 176 Street and 58 Avenue, beside the Clova Cinema. The new address is #101 17618 58 Avenue, in Surrey. For more information, visit www.legionbcyukon.ca.
Kwantlen University pauses to remember
Staff and students at the Cloverdale campus of Kwantlen Polytechnic University will pause at noon today as part of the national day of mourning and remembrance. Ceremonies are taking place at all four Kwantlen campuses, as Canadians reflect on the loss of women and girls who live with the threat of violence or who have died as a result of violence. The National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, observed on Dec. 6. was established in 1991. It coincides with the anniversary of the murder of 14 female students at the Ecole Polytechnic in Montreal. The Cloverdale ceremony takes place outside the cafeteria at the campus, 550 180 Street.

erts’ kept popping up.” She failed to track down one of his books in time for her presentation, but she didn’t forget about the self-help guru. While traveling with her family through Rogers Pass, she saw a man pushing a shopping cart, behind followed by a motorhome, and a video camera. She realized it was Joe Roberts. At a stop, they got to talking. It turned out Roberts is leading The Push For Change: Uniting for Homeless Youth. On May 1, he’ll set out on a cross-Canada journey, pushing a shopping cart along the way. It’s a call to action designed to highlight the issue of homelessness, and to work for awareness and prevention.
“We vowed to get in touch” once school began, she said, adding she was thrilled when he offered to speak at her students’ Christmas concert, which is merely the latest uplifting news for the music deparment. They’re just about to release a CD. What’s more, the students have been invited by the Royal College of Music in London to perform in April. They’ve also accepted an invitation to perform later in the school year in Hawaii at the Kodiak Bowl. “I’m so super proud of the kids,” Pekova says. “They work really hard.” They’re not only learning music, they’re learning about life, she added.

Amazing parade gets full marks
Winter wary RON WEST
To the editor; Re: “Santa Parade to Light up Cloverdale”, Nov. 29. Loved the parade, have been a spectator in the past, this was our first year as participant in a 58 Chev truck, all lit up of course. I think the parade route could still be enlarged. It is a relatively short route for the amount of time and energy that goes into decorating, and the amount of spectators lining the streets. The semis were amazing, good work all involved; participants, volunteers and spectators and Cloverdale BIA.

Surrey-based photographer Ron West spied this robin along with some of his pals during a recent walk along the dyke at the end of 72 Street in Delta.

‘Santas’ pair up for a cause Brothers plan ‘Sleighin’ Cancer’ event By Jennifer Lang A bit of a mystery involving two Santa Clauses and a spiffy, red 1964 Chevy Impala on Cloverdale’s 176 Street a few weeks ago has been solved. The sighting was part of a promotional video being filmed in the historic town centre for an upcoming cancer fundraising event taking place later this month at The Henry, the new pub at the Clover Inn. The Santas – spotted
late one Friday afternoon in the 5600-block of 176 Street, across from the government liquor store – were two Langley men, brothers Chris and Jamie Ruscheinski. On Dec. 22, they’re hosting Sleighin’ Cancer, a Twins Cancer Fundraising party with special guest Dj Shrew. The brothers are fundraising dynamos. So far they’ve raised nearly $500,000 in the fight against cancer, a

disease that has struck close to home for the Ruscheinskis, who’ve held a series of fundraising events aimed at drawing a young, modern crowd. The Twins Cancer Fundraising project is an initiative in memory of their mother, who lost her long and painful fight with breast cancer 10 years ago. Their first fundraiser attracted a crowd of 400 in the brothers’ back yard in Shannon Hills, and their fundraising events have grown from there. “It’s getting to the point now where it’s raising substantial amounts of money,” Jamie said, “And we love doing it. It’s a hobby that’s turned into a complete passion for us.” Sleighin’ Cancer is Dec. 22 at The Henry. Doors open at 8 p.m. For more informa-
tion and tickets, visit www.twinsfundraising. com. (You will find the promotional video there, too.) Tickets are $40. Every penny raised will be going to the Shaun G. Foundation, set up to honour the memory of a close friend who had helped the twins set up some of their previous cancer fundraisers. Shaun died two weeks after he was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of cancer called angiosarcoma. The Shaun G Foundation was established to promote awareness about the fight against all cancers, to fund medical research into angiosarcoma and other forms of cancers, provide support and education for those in need, and to create a scholarship for a student working in the field of cancer research.

rey of more than $80 million in gaming revenues a year also weighed heavily into the decision to back the South Surrey casino complex proposal, Hubert added. Nine Cloverdale Chamber directors have voted in support, but one abstained because he works at Fraser Downs Racetrack and Casino. “When we got into this exercise there was a sense of fear because people thought that having another [gaming] product nearby would harm Fraser Downs,” said Paul Orazietti, executive director of the Cloverdale BIA, who added both the BCLC and Gateway Casinos have gone out of their way to demonstrate that this won’t be the case. He said the BCLC is also working on creating a new Sports Bet Marketing program which will be ultimately unveiled at the Fraser Downs facility. Members of the province’s horse racing industry are waiting for a draft strategic plan that will determine the future viability of the industry. Doug McCallum, former Surrey mayor and current CEO of Harness Racing B.C., the association representing standardbred breeders, owners, trainers and drivers, said he expects the report early in the new year. McCallum said the B.C. Horse

Racing Industry Management Committee is supposed to outline a five-year plan, providing stability for the industry along with new operational models. Next year’s schedule calls for 10 months of racing at Fraser Downs, the same as this year. “We are moving forward,” he said. “We’re actually running very good. The horsemen are happy, and our breeding has really picked up” in response to the committee’s work. McCallum said he believes when it comes to horse racing, clientele will remain loyal to Fraser Downs. “Horse racing is here,” he said. “It’s not going to be in the new casino. The people who come to Fraser Downs for the horse racing will always come here.”

Despite the show of solidarity from Surrey’s business leaders, it appears public opposition continues to build in response to Gateway Casinos and Entertainment’s planned casino complex, which would feature a 200-room hotel, an 800-seat entertainment hall, and would be built at 10 Avenue and 168 Street, an area populated by large rural properties. Surrey city council postponed a hearing concerning the gaming licence back to Jan. 14 in order to review comments from affected residents, members of the public, neighbouring municipalities, and the Semiahmoo First Nation, along with a socioeconomic impact study by the B.C. Lottery Corp. and a traffic impact study.

The Christmas light list - part 1 The folks on 172A offer more bang for the block
Decor
By Jennifer Lang ‘Tis the season for holiday light displays, and over on 172A Street in Cloverdale, residents are once again engaging in a little good-natured rivalry, offering more bang for your block if you’re driving around to admire local bright spots this season. “There’s a little war where there’s more and more lights each year,” says resident Nadeene Gill. “It’s kind of fun.” She says nearly the whole cul-desac gets involved, putting up lights and displays, but the residents at 6306 and 6307 172A Street really seem to spur each other on each year. If you’re heading to Fleetwood, don’t miss the Lagerstrom family Christmas display, a fundraiser for Camp Goodtimes. Clayton Heights resident Gage Staley, a Grade 2 student at Clayton Elementary who’s been battling cancer since he was 3, got to flip the switch at the Lagerstrom’s this year, turning on 25,000 Christmas lights. The computer-controlled display, synchronized to music, is at 15466 91A Avenue. The lights are on to Dec. 31, from 5 to 10 p.m. Sundays to Thursdays, from 5 to 11 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, from 5 p.m. to midnight on Christmas and Boxing Day, and from 5 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. on New Year’s Eve.
Wrap
Tune your car radio to 102.1 FM for the full effect. The goal is to raise $1,500 for Camp Goodtimes, a medically-supervised recrational facility for children with cancer and their families, run by the Canadian Cancer Society. Since 2005 the Lagerstroms have raised more than $25,000 for charity.
– If you’d like your home added to our list of local Christmas light displays, please email editor@cloverdalereporter.com, or call 604575-2400.

By Jennifer Lang It’s the most anticipated movie of the Christmas blockbuster season, and the Clova Cinema is offering a special preview to local audiences. Cloverdale’s landmark single-screen cinema presents The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, Thursday, Dec. 13 at 10 p.m., kicking off a two-week engagement of Lord of the Ring trilogy director Peter Jackson’s adaptation of the J.R.R. Tolkien classic fantasy adventure. Tickets to the sneak peek are $10 – more than a regular ticket – because the screening is a fundraiser for the cinema’s conversion to a digital projection system. Major motion picture studios are all phasing out 35-mm film, forcing cinemas to make the switch to digital, or draw the curtains permanently and go dark. The Clova celebrated its 65th anniversary last May. The family-owned and operated movie house held a fundraising concert Nov. 16 to help raise money for the conversion, an expensive prospect for the cinema, but one that’s absolutely critical if it is to keep its doors open. Regular prices are in effect for the regular run of the The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, playing Dec. 14 to 20. Visit theclova.ca for more.

Hamper deadline nears Local businesses have been generous with volunteers and donations By Jennifer Lang Volunteers with the Cloverdale Christmas Hamper Program this Friday will start picking up the first of more than 200 donation boxes deployed throughout the community. Between Dec. 7 and 10, the donations of non-perishable food items, gifts and cash will be collected and brought to the warehouse at Pacific Community Church, where an army of volunteers will assemble food hampers in time for pick up day, Dec. 15. Local businesses have really stepped up to the plate this year by volunteering time, do-
nating food or providing monetary gifts for the non-denominational program, says Kevin Lunder, program lead along with his wife Trish. The Lunders thank the community for supporting the program, and says no donation is too big or small, because they all add up, and are sincerely appreciated by the beneficiaries. Monetary donations (payable by cheque) can be made to Pacific Community Church (write hamper program in the memo line). Tax receipts will be issued. Call 604-574-4001 ext, 107.

Crows kept a close watch on a rare visitor to Cloverdale – a snowy owl dubbed ‘Hooter’.
Snowy owl touches down in Cloverdale By Jennifer Lang Local bird-watchers were thrilled by the sight of an off-course snowy owl spotted in downtown Cloverdale Tuesday morning. The arctic visitor – immediately dubbed “Hooter” – spent a large part of the day perched on rooftops and various trees in the 17600-block of 57 Avenue in view of residents. Neighbours Diedre Lamone and Carol Rigey were among the admirers who watched with amazement as Hooter flitted and paused along the block, concerned by the opportunistic gang of crows following closely behind, occasionally appearing to harass the northern wanderer. Lamone contacted bird expert Bob Lyons, who advised setting out sardines for the snowy owl, which appeared fatigued an in need of nourishment. He also warned local bird watchers to keep a respectful distance – he feared humans getting too close would only distress the owl, causing it to fly and waste precious energy. This is the second year in a row snowy owls have flown south to B.C.’s Boundary Bay area in Delta, but Lyons said he’s never heard of anyone seeing a snowy owl in Cloverdale. The birds are pure white with some grey feathers and have yellow eyes. If you see one in distress, contact O.W.L., or Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation Society in Delta.
Waiting for Christmas For many, Christmas is a time to look back at a historic event—the birth of a child named Jesus who brought salvation to the world. But did you know that before he was born, believers looked forward to his coming? Jesus was born in Bethlehem. About 700 years before he was born, the prophet Micah said that a ruler and shepherd for Israel would come from Bethlehem. A group of wise men knelt before this baby in Bethlehem and presented gifts to him. Nearly 1000 years before this happened, King Solomon said, “...may the kings of Sheba and Seba bring gifts! May all kings fall down before him, all nations serve him! For he delivers the needy when he calls, the poor and him who has no helper.” (Psalm 72:10-12) Jesus was a descendant of King David. About 650 years before Jesus came to establish righteousness, a lonely prophet in Judah named Jeremiah said, “Behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, Neighbourhood Bible Study and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land.” (Jeremiah 23:5) When he arrived, the believers in Jerusalem were already waiting at Wired Monk at 16811 60th Ave from 7 to 9 pm on Wednesdays for redemption. Christianity, then, is not a couple thousand years old. It is much, much older. Children’s Bible School (ages 6-12) at the church, This Christmas, consider the testimony of believers past and 10am to 12pm on Saturdays present; and consider the claim Christ has on the universe and on your life. - Paul Jubenvill This column is sponsored by the

Surrey pioneer passes A Ukulele Christmas: 2012 The Langley Ukulele Association presents ...
By Kevin Diakiw A Surrey pioneer and much-loved teacher has died. May Isabell Sullivan, wife of Jim Sullivan, died peacefully and surrounded by family at Zion Park Manor in Cloverdale on Nov. 22. She was 98 years old. Sullivan spent most of her life in Surrey, but served overseas as an ambulance driver with her sister Margie during the Second World War. She taught for almost 30 years at Cloverdale Catholic School, and prior to that, in the public school system. “May,” “Mum,” “Granny,” (and “Mrs. Sullivan” to her many students) was a kind, calm, steady person with quiet resolve, her son Brian Sullivan said. West Nile virus threat fizzles out By Jeff Nagel Despite years of predictions that mosquito-borne West Nile virus would arrive in the Lower Mainland, the potentially deadly illness is still a no-show here. And Metro Vancouver has now decided to stop spending $76,000 a year coordinating a regional response to the threat. Nobody has ever been infected by West Nile within the Lower Mainland and it’s only been detected here once – in a horse in Aldergrove in 2009. The B.C. Centre for Disease Control now considers Metro Vancouver to be at the very edge of the potential reach of the virus, which has infected people in the Interior and Washington State. The virus had spread rapidly across North America in the early 2000s but activity in the Pacific Northwest has since slowed considerably. Fraser Health said this year it no longer recommends preemptive use of larvicide to control mosquitoes in its region and provincial funding for West Nile response that used to be administered through a Metro function has been cut off. The Fraser and Vancouver Coastal health authorities will instead work directly
with local municipalities to direct West Nile mosquito control and prevention if and when the virus poses a more serious risk in this area. Metro Vancouver will still control nuisance mosquitoes on its own lands, such as Metro regional parks, as will some cities, including Richmond. Fraser Health has also scaled back its program to monitor mosquitoes, crows and ravens that serve as indicator species for West Nile. There were 24 probable or confirmed West Nile cases in B.C. residents from 2007 to 2010, but nearly all of them are believed to have been contracted travelling elsewhere. There have been no cases anywhere in B.C. in the last two years. About 20 per cent of West Nile-infected people get a fever and other symptoms, recovering within a week or so. About one in 150 get severe illness, such as brain inflammation or polio-like paralysis that can be fatal. Authorities had repeatedly urged residents to use insect repellent during mosquito season and to take other preventative measures, such as clearing stagnant water from properties.

Are there supplements that may help my IBS? I have abdominal cramps, diarrhea alternating with constipation, and a lot of gas. Peppermint oil is known for its ability to relax intestinal smooth muscles. Look for a preparation that is known to be acid stable like Intesol by Metagenics. Intesol contains additional Lavender Oil and Chamomile extract both of which have relaxing and anti-inflammatory properties. A homeopathic preparation called Nux Vomica Complex helps the diarrhea, constipation and gas. Enzyme supplements help the dyspepsia. IBS Urgency (New Roots) is a specific probiotic preparation formulated for IBS.

‘Tis the season for holiday scams By Jennifer Lang With just a few weeks to Christmas, the Better Business Bureau is warning consumers that it’s prime season for scammers hoping to rip them off. “Every year, thousands of shoppers fall victim to the holiday deals that seem too good to be true, and the bogus charity please that pull at heart strings,” says Danielle Primrose of the B.C. Better Business Bureau, who warns that it’s important to be vigilant online – and while out shopping. The BBB offers the following tips: Always check a business’s BBB Business Review at www. mbc.bbb.org before making a purchase. Make sure the company has a physical address and telephone number. While shopping online, be suspicious of prices for electronics or luxury goods at low, low prices. If you’re shopping on Craigslist or other free bulletin board site, look for local sellers and conduct financial transactions in person. Bring a friend along if you’re uncomfortable meeting the seller alone. Never wire money as payment, and if you’re shopping online auctions, look at the seller ratings and read their reviews. Don’t get bogged down in purchases or lose track of your wallet. Identity thieves are on the lookout to steal your wallet – or to spy over your shoulder to learn your credit and debit card numbers. Cover the keyboard while entering your PIN number or when withdrawing cash from an ATM. Think before you give. Door-to-door solicitations are common at this time of year, but if an unfamiliar organization comes knocking, don’t donate without gathering details such as the charity’s name, address and an ID from the solicitor. Ask to see written information on the charity’s programs and finances, then visit the Canadian Revenue Agency for a list of registered charities to confirm they’re legit. Don’t click on any links or open attachments that come by email until you’ve confirmed they’re not malicious. “Phishing” emails are a common way for hackers to get you to part with your personal information. Beware of e-cards and messages pretending to be from courier companies like UPS or FedEx with links to package tracking information. Email addresses that don’t match up, typos and grammatical errors are red flags. Also make sure your computer’s anti-virus software and security patches are updated. For more tips, visit www.mbc.bbb.org.
Yes, we offer free data transfer including email transfer & loading of your personal programs when you buy a new or used desktop or laptop from us.

Q
Why should I consider Taekwondo for my children or myself?
A
Training in Taekwondo is more than just self-defense. A good program in the right environment will improve physical fitness and skill, sharpen our mental ability and push us to the highest standards of character based on traditional values. An increase in obesity and a decline in discipline and focus are prevalent in our society today. The physical training in Taekwondo builds strength, coordination, flexibility and endurance. At Cloverdale Black Belt Academy we frequently hear that our students are at the top of their class in physical fitness and many have experienced substantial weight loss and other health benefits. Cloverdale Black Belt Academy is a positive, friendly environment where structure and discipline bring out the best in our students and values like courtesy, respect, honour, integrity and loyalty are talked about and expected. As instructors, we are very proud of our students as we frequently see them go out or their way to help others and get comments on how courteous and respectful they are. Give your children and yourself the value, benefit and success that results from training in Taekwondo at Cloverdale Black Belt Academy. Cloverdale Black Belt Academy, "Making the World a Better Place, One Black Belt at a Time!”

Q
Should I buy a house that needs Renovation?
A
I am finding that this scenario is a great opportunity for buyer’s that is not being taken advantage of. Buyer’s looking for a dream home on a limited budget, should consider purchasing a home that can be customized to their own taste. If you buy a home in a good location at the right price, you can quickly increase your equity by adding popular features such as hardwood floors, stainless steel appliances, granite countertops and new light fixtures. It is important to do your homework prior to purchasing with a thorough inspection and analysis of the cost of renovations before sealing the contract.
