Overcoming dementia’s depression By JANET INGRAM-JOHNSON Aldergrove Star

Dementia can be a depressing topic, but don’t try telling that to Carrol Horne. There’s as yet no cure for dementia. Victims suffer a very painful loss of memory and identity, and their loved ones suffer as they watch their spouse or parent “disappear”. Carrol Horne is 67 and has Alzheimer’s disease, a progressive attack on her brain and her self-image, but you’d never know

that from meeting her in the street. Upbeat and energetic, she still tries to swim 60 lengths of the Blair Pool twice a week — without touching the pool sides to get that extra push. “I could go longer,” she says, “but I don’t need to. Exercise is good. Doing it, I always feel better.” And, every day, she takes her eight-yearold cocker spaniel, Misty, for a walk. She also does ceramics, creating wonderfully imaginative pieces in her backyard

She loves socializing with her eight grandchildren, who range in age from 16 to three, even if now she sometimes has to check a captioned photo to remember all their names. “I don’t like the idea of getting depressed, so I just keep going,” Carrol says. “I want to live — really live — until I die.” Carrol and Terry Horne have lived in the Langley area all their lives. High school sweethearts who met at age 15 when

As temperatures start dipping below zero, homeless shelters begin to fill to capacity. But homeless youth in Langley technically have no where to go. Currently, there is no emergency housing for youth in either the City or the Township. The Gateway of Hope homeless shelter, located in the City of Langley, is for adults over the age of 19 only. Those underage must go either to Abbotsford, Surrey or even Vancouver. Aldergrove Neighbourhood Services plans to change that. With $10,000 in new funding, split between the City of Langley and the Township of Langley, a pilot project for an emergency youth shelter will be started. It is important to get the project off the ground right away, Councillor Michelle Sparrow told Township council on Nov. 19. “At the very least we need to get this moving and to get this up and running this winter so that the youth in our community are cared for,” she said. Sparrow brought forth a motion to provide $5,000 from council contingency to match the amount donated by the City of Langley for the project. Councillor Kim Richter, who voted against the motion, said she is concerned that this type of funding will set a precedent for the future, as the issue is not mandated to municipal governments. “This is clearly a social problem that is under the jurisdiction of a higher level of government,” she said. “Once we stick our noses into it, it’s going to become our problem on a regular, ongoing, year to year basis.” Councillor Charlie Fox, a board of director for Aldergrove Neighbourhood Services, noted that there was a proposal to build a youth shelter in Aldergrove a year ago, but the Ministry of Children and Family Development pulled funding for it “at the last minute.” “Where is the Ministry for Children and Family Development? Where are they supporting the youth, whose lives are literally in endangerment when it gets to cold weather?” he asked. Fox also made a motion to have the MCFD come to council and make a presentation so they can be “held accountable” for their role in the issue of youth homelessness. “We have homelessness here,” he said. “We need to deal with the homeless youth here.”

Alzheimer’s Society takes on challenge of second ‘Walk for Memories’ here FROM FRONT:

Carrol’s brother brought Terry home for a visit, they were married at 20 and together raised one daughter and two sons. Carrol — honoree of the 2013 Langley-AldergroveAbbotsford Walk for Memories — is a Nundal, one of seven siblings whose dad was Elford Nundal, a longtime Langley veterinarian who served Langley Township as alderman and mayor between 1974 and 1987. One brother, Larry, to whom she is close, is a widely- known Mission councillor. When she left high school, Carrol trained as a practical nurse, but gave up that pursuit to help Terry run his glass business, Garran Mirror Doors. Terry can trace his family history in Langley back to 1915 and it was through Terry’s family that Carrol and Terry had their first brush with dementia. Terry’s father was struck by Alzheimer’s disease and spent five years in a Fort Langley residential home where care was well-intentioned but resources limited. “To him, it felt like an asylum,” says Terry. “There was nothing for him then in the way of help.” Once a strong man not

given to tears, “I remember him crying when it came time for him to return inside the home, pleading with us not to make him go back in.” Terry and Carrol live with the regret of not being able to do more to help. Things are different now. When Carrol and her doctor first detected signs that her brain wasn’t functioning as well as it perhaps should, she walked with her dog into the Langley support office of the Alzheimer Society of B.C. and asked the ASBC’s area co-ordinator, Rose Puszka, for help. And help she got. Many people with symptoms of dementia try to ignore them and leave it too late to seek help. Not Carrol Horne. “Carrol decided she would attend an ASBC supportgroup meeting, to try to connect with others who were facing similar experiences and learn how they managed their early symptoms,” says Puszka. From those early meetings, Carrol has now become a lynchpin of group discussions. “She’s truly amazing,” Puszka says. “She knows that Alzheimer’s is a progressive disease and that she’ll forget things, but she also tells others that battling some of the symptoms can cause unwanted anxiety and frustration, not

just for the one with dementia but for others, too.” “Dementia isn’t frightening,” says Carrol. “It’s frustrating. You can’t let it get to you. You just have to keep going.” “Nobody [who doesn’t have dementia] knows what it’s like not to have things in your head, words that just aren’t there.” One of the hardest blows that came with her Alzheimer diagnosis was having to give up driving long before most seniors face that hurdle. She misses the independence of a car. At one time, she even drove a 750 c.c. motorcycle! A little over 20 years ago, Carrol and Terry decided to give up their bikes when increasing traffic took the fun out of twowheeling, but both look back fondly on excursions “across the line” in Washington State. Given the chance, would Carrol go back to those days of motorbikes and exploration, without any dementia in her future? “I wouldn’t go back,” she says firmly, looking at Terry for confirmation. “We’re happy with this stage of life.” Terry agrees. “And I don’t want to stop,” adds Carrol. “I haven’t done all I want to do yet.” The Langley-AldergroveAbbotsford Walk for

The non-profit Alzheimer Society of B.C. co-ordinates assistance through outreach offices in five regions, including three in Surrey-Cloverdale, Langley and Abbotsford. Although these services provide support to a great number of families, they are in some ways just the tip of an iceberg of need, especially as Baby Boomers age. Annual Walks for Memories — the biggest fundraisers of the ASBC calendar — take place on the last Sunday of January, Alzheimer Awareness Month. The 2013 Langley-AldergroveAbbotsford walk will return to the Aldergrove Athletic Park, a lovely setting with spectacular views of Mt. Baker. There is free parking, a Rotary Fieldhouse providing shelter and facilities, and a variety of entertainment is planned for both children and adults. There is no set walking distance but people are encouraged to exercise, mingle and enjoy a few hours (noon to 3 p.m.) in support of a great cause. Staff and Students Demonstrate 21st Century Learning

What belongs in your Neighbourhood Learning Centre?

During the two most recent Regular Board Meetings, students and staff have introduced trustees to some of the fantastic ways in which technology is being used to facilitate learning throughout the District.

School District No. 35 seeks input on possible community uses and services. The Willoughby slope area will be home to two new Neighbourhood Learning Centre (NLC) spaces, with more to come as additional schools are built. NLCs are intended to serve the entire local community and not just the families who attend the schools that house them. The goal is for schools and community organizations to partner together to create inviting places where people of all ages can access education, community services, recreation and culture every day throughout the year.

Teachers from Langley Secondary School took some time to demonstrate the educational social media platform Edmodo, and the practical ways in which they make use of it as a tool for collaboration and sharing with colleagues, students and parents. Subsequently, staff and students from West Langley Elementary presented some of their learning experiences with iPads and shared some iBooks stories the students had created to educate their peers on the importance of going green.

Within each of the new South East Yorkson area school and Lynn Fripps Elementary, there are two types of NLC spaces; shared rooms that are available for rent based on availability (i.e. gym, multipurpose room, etc.) and leasable space that is available for a long term service provider. Editor: With each passing day, as a senior and grandparent, my concern for Aldergrove grows. Has anyone given thought to the increased traffic on Fraser Highway at game times when the new arena and pool is built? The traffic is already bad for anyone crossing the highway. Having seen the refurbishment of Twin Rinks, why can’t the present rink be improved? It has plenty of parking and also has a good setting for weekend camp meets. We have already lost a great family gathering place after the outdoor water feature was taken away from our beautiful Aldergrove Lake Park. What families need is to restore this lake for all to use. An outdoor pool is strictly a drop-off, not something that will be used by the whole family for half a day or all day. Now we are being faced with another nature loss in the sale of the Glen Valley forest. This natural forest should be preserved as is for the use of all. In Europe natural walks and nature with water features are preserved even in busy cities. As a senior, moving the library is of great concern. VICTORIA – Whatever happens in the provincial election five months from now, taxpayers should insist that it be the last spring vote. Now I know this isn’t sexy like the horse race of popularity polls so loved by the TV news. But integrity of public financial information is the next vital step in democratic reform, even more important than scheduled election dates. And the B.C. tradition of tabling untested election budgets, shutting down the legislature and firing up the campaign buses, has to end. The B.C. Liberals are on track to surpass the NDP on fudge-it budgets, having put millions into TV ads that insist the 2013 budget will struggle into the black. This is the hill Christy Clark has chosen to die on. Glen Clark set the modern bar with his 1996 election budget. After a run of red ink, it conjured a tidy little surplus that helped the NDP squeak out a win over the plaid-shirted Gordon Campbell. Campbell’s noisy exit had its roots in his 2009 fudgeit budget, which clung to an outdated $500-million deficit forecast that had already melted down along with banks, auto makers and U.S. real estate. After the election, British Columbians found out we were really $2.8 billion in the red.

Will truth die on Deficit Hill?

Not one to waste a good crisis, Campbell ordered the harmonized sales tax. Now Premier Clark and Finance Minister Mike de Jong are proposing to balance the budget <I>and</I> shut down the HST money machine. Clark gave a speech in Coquitlam the day before last week’s budget update, warning it “won’t be pretty.” And it’s not. In September the currentyear deficit forecast jumped above $1 billion, largely due to a glut of natural gas. The latest update pushed it near $1.5 billion. Natural gas royalties are bumping along the bottom, no big change there. But now coal prices and shipments are down, and a slow real estate market has pinched the flow of cash from Bill Vander Zalm’s legacy, the property purchase tax. I erred in a previous column, saying this year’s deficit is partly due to a staged repayment of federal HST transition money. Not so. That entire $1.6 billion was booked in last year’s budget, pushing that deficit to a record $3 billion. This means the current $1.5 billion bleeder is based strictly on current revenues, debt servicing and spending. So how is this sucking chest wound going to suddenly heal next spring? De

Jong provided an early version of his answer in his September financial statement. Amazingly, it projects a recovery of more than $100 million in natural gas royalties next year. Hmmm. Liquefied natural gas exports to Asia are still years away, and the U.S., our only current energy export customer, is developing its own huge shale gas and shale oil reserves. In another forecasted miracle, sales tax revenue is expected to dip by a mere $120 million as the old provincial sales tax returns next year. In 2014 it is projected to bounce right back to where it is today, around $6.1 billion. That’s odd. When former finance minister Kevin Falcon announced the transition back to PST last May, he described annual revenue loss of about $500 million the first year, and more than $600 million the next. Granted, business investment credits and HST rebates to the poor also end, saving the government a pile of cash as this significant tax reform dies. But it still looks like another fudge-it budget, designed to help another premier avoid the political graveyard at the foot of Deficit Hill. Child care unaffordable for too many families

Editor: Re: Tom Fletcher’s article Nov 29, “Poverty of politics continues.” Speaking as one of the “activists” as described with obvious derision by Fletcher, I would like to add something to the discussion on child poverty. Most reasonable people are well aware that families with young children, all across B.C., are facing huge challenges because of high fees for daycare spaces, too few quality licensed daycare spaces and poverty level wages paid to the mostly women working in daycare. Fees have now reached $1,915 per month, per child, in some places. The reality is that many mothers want to move off income assistance or go back to school to move out of a low paying job. But until we have a child care system that won’t happen. That is why thousands of parents and grandparents from around the province, along with municipal governments, school boards, labour groups, business and academics are all calling for the $10/day Child Care Plan to be implemented in B.C. Pay for it yourselves Editor: Good for you Mayor Moonbeam, you go right ahead and build another TransLink Skytrain along Broadway but don’t you even think about asking us out here in Langley to pay for it. I’m tired of paying for services north of the Fraser River, and if any one of the mayors south of the Fraser support your plan so that it will cost us (south of the Fraser) any money, they can kiss their mayoral position goodbye. Today they are based out of a military transmitter/receiver site in Aldergrove that dates back to the 1950s, and is due to receive as much as $7 million in facilities upgrades. The 38 men in the unit generally train every Thursday night, plus one weekend per month. Most nights it’s tool time. Last Thursday they discussed running a chainsaw, and pouring concrete. They have specialties, but each becomes a jack-of-alltrades. Once per year they do readiness training where they have a range day. They practise with rifles and pistols, throw live grenades, and train on a machine gun. In the

classroom, they learn the rules of engagement. Depending on their deployment, they may also receive specialized training, such as being part of a convoy. While they are not a fighting force, their discipline and their approach is straight-up military. Capt. Pete Pitcher, the flight commander, wants people with a great work ethic and who are thickskinned. He had a commanding officer who, on a rainy day, with a job to be done outdoors, formed up his troops and marched them into a water-filled ditch. Rain was not an issue. He has taken a page from that mentor’s book – everyone is part of the team, and they are in neck deep. “If you’re going to be with us, you’re going to do

They got the job done early, so they added a much-needed wing onto the base hospital, which serves both civilian and military patients, and took on other projects. The result of the can-do attitude was the team earning a Task Force Commander’s Commendation.

A pay hike for Langley Township’s mayor and council will be phased in over the next four years, but a new travel allowance that will boost their overall compensation by almost 10 per cent will take effect right away. The altered proposal was approved Monday afternoon after the council remuneration task force said phasing in the salary increases would avoid a pay hike next year and address the “perception issue” about another salary increase 12 months after Mayor Jack Froese’s annual salary went up by 12.6 per cent and councillor pay rates rose by 19 percent. That was a “catch-up” after several years of no salary increases, task force chair Barbara Sharp, a former North Vancouver City mayor, said in a written memo to council. “It is our view that any public sensitivities to increases in 2013 would be more a matter of perception than reality,” Sharp wrote. While the phasing in means no increase in the mayor or councillor salaries next year, they will get a new $340 a month travel allowance on top of their salary of $42,936, which adds $4,080 to their overall compensation, an increase of 9.5 per cent. Mayor Jack Froese will get a travel allowance of $850 a month, which amounts to another $10,200 on top of his salary of $105,456, an increase of 9.7 per

cent. At the Monday afternoon Township council meeting that approved the proposal, remuneration task force spokesman Darcy Rezac defended the proposed new travel allowance. “It’s very common,” Rezac said. “It’s very common in business and it’s common in government.” And it should be considered “quite separate” from the salary increase, Rezac added. Three councillors, Kim Richter, Bob Long and David Davis disagreed and voted against it. Richter said council already gets an allowance. “We have one-third of our salary tax-free and I understand that was to be used to fund travel,” Richter said. A Revenue Canada interpretation bulletin issued in 1976 (IT-292) states elected municipal officials can avoid paying taxes on up to a third of their annual salary by declaring it to be an “expense allowance” which includes “mileage or other traveling allowance.” Long said he would prefer to see the travel allowance phased in like the pay raise. Davis had earlier said said he did not want to decide his own pay increase. The rest of council voted for the allowance and slowed-down pay increase. Councillor Michelle Sparrow, who was absent for the previous

week’s debate on the new pay formula, supported the proposal by the independent volunteer task force as the best way of handling what she called the “hot potato” issue of council compensation. “Arm’s-length was the correct move,” Sparrow said. Councillor Steve Ferguson said the workload of council members has increased. “My wife is mad at me because I’m spending more time on council than I ever did,” Ferguson said. Councillor Charlie Fox, who has been on council eight years, said the workload of the councillors “has increased incrementally,” more than his salary has gone up. “I’m rarely home for dinner,” Fox said. During last week’s debate on the proposal, Fox had argued for delaying the pay increase until after the next election. Councillor Grant Ward supported the new allowance, saying “I do an awful lot of traveling on behalf of this council.” The new formula aims to avoid the escalating pay hikes and controversies that ensued under the previous system that set Langley Township council pay adjustments based on what other Lower Mainland municipalities were paying their mayors and councillors. “We were all uncomfortable” with the previous process, said Councillor Bev Dornan, who supported the new approach as a made-in-Langley solution.

“It’s a process devised by Langley residents,” Dornan said. Froese said council should follow through with the recommendation of task force it appointed. “Thankfully, this (pay hikes issue) doesn’t come before us too often,” Froese said. At the close of the evening meeting, Councillor Fox approached the press table in the council chambers. “I did not get a pay raise,” Fox said. “I got a travel allowance.” He did not, he said, want to see news reports suggesting otherwise. Mayor Froese later noted the travel allowance is not mandatory and any councilor who objects can refuse it. The new pay raise formula uses an average of the salaries of a federal MP, provincial MLA, provincial government cabinet minister, Langley RCMP superintendent and the principal of the largest high school in Langley. The task force averaged out the salaries to produce a figure of $138,086, then calculated the mayor’s pay rate at 80 per cent of the average, and councillors’ pay at 40 per cent of the mayor’s pay. The revised approach adopted Monday night will reduce the mayors salary to 77 per cent of that amount, meaning no increase for Froese or for the councillors next year. The figure will rise by one percentage point a year until it reaches 80 per cent in 2016.

The armed forces reserves train regularly, staying ready for when they are called upon. The men of 192 Construction Engineering Flight (CEF) have been hearing the call a lot. So much so, that at least half of the unit has an Afghanistan campaign medal. Others, like Sgt. Blaine Reynolds, have effectively been full-time soldiers during the campaign. His civilian career as a carpenter has been on hold, as he worked through four tours in Afghanistan. Like most of his comrades, he is eager to go. “I like the travel and adventure – the unknown,” said Reynolds. “It gets in your blood.” They are gas fitters, carpenters, plumbers, electricians and other tradesmen, and their skills are needed to build whatever facilities the military needs. In the Gulf War of 1991, Air Command was frustrated in trying to build a operating base in Qatar – there was a lack of construction engineers available to rapidly build and maintain it. In response, the air reserve program was born, and in 1996 the 192 Airfield Engineering Flight was established in Abbotsford as one of four reserve

Typical of the troops in 192 CEF, he is keen to take a deployment. “Everyone’s proud to serve – it’s a chance to go and do the job you’ve been trained to do.” Having been in the regular forces as an engineer during the first Gulf War, in Yugoslavia, and in the Golan Heights region between Israel and Syria, he knows the life of a military man stationed overseas. “I can go there and make their life easier, by doing my job,” he said. Student enrolment stays steady in Langley School District By MONIQUE TAMMINGA Aldergrove Star

Student enrolment in Langley has stayed the same, at around 18,696 pupils, since 2008. The number of students in Langley is up slightly, by 199, this year over last, but that is mostly coming from children wanting to attend choice schools and from the housing boom in Willoughby,

While the district did see an increase in enrolment this year, Green said his predicted head count before the numbers were official was off by around 280 students. The biggest variance was in the primary level at community schools, which saw a shortfall of 155 students, which translates to just over a $1 million

Bottleneck cleared as new bridge opens By JEFF NAGEL Aldergrove Star

It’s smooth sailing for Highway 1 commuters between Surrey and Coquitlam this week after the new Port Mann Bridge officially opened Saturday with eight lanes flowing. Drivers raved about the new bridge – and their ability to cross it in record time – after its first big test of weekday conditions on Monday. “The easiest commute in ages,” tweeted Langley motorist Evangel Biaison. “Just crossed the Port Mann during rush hour without bumper to bumper traffic for the first time in my life,” said Twitter user ‘Taj’, who estimated he saved 20 to 25 minutes. Student Avneet Sidhu said he got to class 30 minutes early because of the bridge. There’s still congestion elsewhere on Highway 1 – the freeway is narrower in Burnaby, where construction will continue through 2013, and long waits were reported heading for the Brunette Avenue exit. But B.C.’s biggest bottleneck has been unplugged. The world’s widest bridge had already been running with the normal five lanes – three eastbound and two westbound – but Saturday’s ceremonial removal of traffic cones opened up three more lanes, instantly transforming traffic conditions. “After years of waiting, drivers get to enjoy a faster, more efficient commute and will have more time to spend with their family instead of sitting in an idling car,” Premier Christy Clark said at the opening. Port Mann/Highway 1 officials had projected some commutes between Surrey and Coquitlam would fall by two-thirds to just over 10 minutes. The convenience will only be free this week. Starting next Saturday, regular drivers will pay an introductory toll of $1.50 per crossing (more for larger vehicles) and that will increase to $3 by the end of 2013, or by March for drivers who don’t register before then with the TReO electronic tolling system. Frequent users can get an unlimited monthly pass – $75 a month while the half-price toll is in effect rising to $150 in a year’s time. How residents respond to the tolls

remains to be seen. There are fears drivers who refuse to pay will then clog the free Pattullo Bridge, Alex Fraser Bridge and even the Massey Tunnel. Port Mann/Highway 1 project officials predict the net diversion will be modest, with significant numbers of drivers coming back to the corridor who have shunned it for years because of heavy congestion. The northeast section of the South Fraser Perimeter Road is also now open, providing a new link through Surrey to the Pattullo Bridge for motorists seeking a free untolled crossing. But since westbound traffic would have to get on the SFPR at 176 Street, much toll-averse traffic must wend its way through Surrey roads to get to the Pattullo before facing already severe congestion in New Westminster. Some drivers are dead-set against having to pay to drive over a bridge and vow to boycott the bridge. Other observers are more optimistic, saying the province’s decision to offer half-price tolls as

The Aldergrove Kodiaks took a win away at Ridge Meadows Flames Friday night to maintain second place in the Harold Brittain conference. The 4-1 win followed a 2-1 loss at home against the conference-leading Abbotsford Pilots, Nov. 28. Kodiaks captain Daniel Higgs scored their only goal on the Pilots that night, on a power play late in the third period. Assists came from Kenny Prato and Adam Callegari. The Pilots scored twice in the first period. The Pilots outshot the Kodiaks 41-29 that night, earning Kodiaks keeper Mark Manicucci the game’s second star for stopping 39 shots. The Kodiaks were in better form Friday, when they outshot the Flames 29-20 for the 4-1 win. Kodiaks scorers were Roshen Jaswal

Lafleur to visit for Hockey Day in Canada Aldergrove Star

Hockey legend Guy Lafleur is expected to meet fans in Richmond as part of the second annual Hockey Day in Richmond. City council approved spending $76,500 to help host the Feb. 9, 2013 event, which will see the Montreal Canadiens’ great sign autographs for fans at the Richmond Olympic Oval. Hockey fans can also expect to see Vancouver Canucks alumni for the daylong event. The oval’s two rinks will host a variety of hockey games, including a Vancouver Canucks alumni game and a Junior B hockey matchup of the Richmond Sockeyes and Aldergrove Kodiaks. Dubbed Richmond Celebrates Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada 2013, the event isn’t an official host of Hockey Day in Canada on CBC, but the city hopes to land that hosting role in 2015 from the public broadcaster. Official host is Lloydminster, Alta. Planned for the Richmond event are a variety of hockey experiences: ball, table, floor, ice and road—with the

oval’s riverfront plaza hosting a large road hockey tournament. Exhibits, displays and performances from the Odds are also planned. This year’s event falls on the newest long weekend—B.C. Family Day. The city’s first hockey day event, held Feb. 11, 2012, drew 16,000 to the oval. GUY LAFLEUR •Recognized as one of the greatest NHL players of all time, Lafleur helped his team to five Stanley Cup championships and is a three-time winner of the Art Ross Trophy (top scorer) and twotime winner of the Hart Trophy (most valuable player). •He began his career in 1971 and retired in 1985 with 1,246 points in regular season competition—a team record. He came out of the retirement for the 1998-89 season, playing for the New York Rangers and Quebec Nordiques before retiring again in 1991. •His 518 regular season goals for the Canadiens are only second to Maurice Richard’s 544. •He was inducted to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1988

Langley Christian School’s Lightning are the B.C. AA senior boys volleyball champions. The boys won all seven matches to win the B.C. banner. Games were played in Kelowna Nov. 29 to Dec. 1, with 16 teams participating. The Lightning boys have been playing together for six years now. “They did a great job of getting ready and made sure they peaked at the right time,” said assistant coach Jesse Zuidhof.

“Their mental game was to play to win and their minds were in the right place, with three things: to enjoy themselves, remember the one who gave them their gifts and to play for their teammates.” Coached by Aaron Vandenbrink and assistants Jesse Zuidhof and Derek Vandenbrink, the team’s players are Mark Antoniuk, Joel Hansen, Isaiah Dahl, Aiden Kits, Ben Macadam, Levi Vandenbrink, Mitchell Jarvie, Mike Grypma, Eli Tolkamp, Jeremy Hansma, Fran VanWyk and Braden Heppell.

McHale Age 45, of Aldergrove passed away of cancer November 21, 2012. Born in Langley, to Robert & Helen Press she will be lovingly remembered by her best friend and husband Chris, sweetie-pie daughter Sarah, mother Helen, inlaws Wayne & Robin, Terry & Helen as well as many friends, relatives and of course the family dog Cricket. She enjoyed community outreach including walking dogs. Michelle was very creative with a good eye for scrapbooking and card making. She graduated from D.W. Poppy and initially worked at the family music store. Her career in Home Care was rewarding as she enjoyed her clients and coworkers.
