Doctor on line one Erin Haluschak Black Press

COURTENAY — With a few clicks of a mouse, Sharon Knox of Union Bay was able to see and talk to her doctor in Victoria, have her heart and lungs checked and complete a consultation without having to leave the Comox Valley. Knox is one of a number of growing patients utilizing TeleCardiology — a live, two-way video conferencing technology to connect heart patients living in rural and remote communities across Vancouver Island. The sessions connect patients with cardiac and internal medicine specialists in Victoria, Nanaimo and Campbell River, minimizing travel,

stress and costs associated with long distance medical appointments. “It saves a lot of time and travel,” added Knox. “You’ve got to get up at six in the morning to get out of the house to get down for your appointments in Victoria, and you’re not there for that long. This way, it’s only about an hour’s time.” During a demonstration at the Comox Valley Nursing Centre on Wednesday, Knox consulted with her cardiologist, Dr. Elizabeth Swiggum, who examined Knox’s heartbeat and lungs with a digital stethoscope at the Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria. The technology enabled Swiggum to listen to Knox’s heart in real time with both auditory and visual

Vancouver Island Health Authority (VIHA) is the first health authority in the British Columbia to roll out the TeleCardiology program using the digital, bluetoothenabled stethoscopes. “This is a great

opportunity to collaborate with IT, with the other care providers throughout Vancouver Island,” said Swiggum. “We’re forming bonds with not only the patient, but allowing patients to get their care locally. “This is an

opportunity to not only have the clinical evaluation, but also the physical face-toface visit with these patients.” VIHA has 32 digital stethoscopes, and three to four TeleCardiology appointments are performed per month at the nursing centre,

but the technology is used in other locations. Fourteen VIHA programs provide telehealth services in 17 different communities at 41 different sites. The telehealth program began in 2007, and more than 7,700 telehealth

consults have taken place. Don Hubbard, VIHA board chair added in addition to TeleCardiology, telehealth is used by oncology, psychiatry, genetics, thoracic surgery, speech pathology and other health services.

Port Hardy earns Bear Smart designation Black Press Port Hardy has made strides towards becoming one of B.C.’s certified Bear Smart communities. The status is awarded by the Ministry of Environment to communities that have undertaken planning and made changes that have reduced human/ bear conflicts. By more carefully managing wildlife attractants such as domestic garbage, composts, ripening fruit, pet foods, bird feeders and other sources of odour, Port Hardy has reduced human/bear incidents by more than 50 per cent compared with previous years. “While we have

made significant progress this year we must have continuing education and effort in the following year to achieve our Bear Smart status,” said Mac Willing, Port Hardy’s Bear Aware Community Coordinator. “I would like to recognize the BC Conservation Foundation, Port Hardy municipal staff, Fox’s Disposal Services Ltd., BC Conservation Officer Service, School District #85, and the Bear Aware program volunteers. My thanks to all those who contributed to the progress that we have made.” Willing kicked off the Bear Smart campaign in Port Hardy earlier this year,

staffing a booth at the Mount Waddington Regional Fall Fair from which he shared tips residents could use to help reduce human/bear conflicts in and around the community. On average, 500 black bears and 40 grizzlies are killed each year in B.C., and most of these deaths are preventable by managing attractants. Among Willing’s suggestions: n Keep garbage in a location inaccessible to bears. If you don’t have secure storage, food waste can be frozen until collection or taken to the landfill. n Bird seed is attractive to bears. Birds don’t need extra feed during the summer so keep feeders

Rardon in until November. n Compost, chickens and pet food can all become attractants if managed improperly. n Remove potential food items from vehicles and campers. Each year, many vehicles are damaged by black bears trying to gain entry for the food. For more information on the Bear Aware program see www.bearaware. bc.ca.

Learn to Fish partnership benefits families Hundreds of new anglers got their feet wet for the first time at British Columbia’s provincial parks during 2012. A record number of B.C. families took part in free Learn to Fish programs in provincial parks, which added value to the park visitors’ already great experiences. “BC Parks partnership with the Freshwater Fisheries Society of B.C.’s Learn to Fish program, helps embody our Families’ First agenda and one of its core pillars family affordability. What better way to strengthen the ties that bind than spending time with those you love in a BC Park. Just as we know that families are as diverse as our province, we know provincial parks have something to offer everyone,” said Environment Minister Terry Lake. The program served

2,765 youth and their families at more than 78 sessions in 19 different provincial parks during the 2012 season. This was a 20 per cent increase over 2011 levels in BC Parks. The provincial parks program is a result of a partnership with the non-profit Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC who has delivered the Learn to Fish program in B.C. since 2006. The Learn to Fish program has served nearly 100,000 participants throughout B.C., and of those participants, more than 12,500 baited their hooks in provincial parks. The program is delivered by the Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC in partnership with BC Parks and the Habitat Conservation Trust Foundation. Designed to attract new anglers to recreational fishing, the Learn to Fish program has a strong

focus on conservation and increasing environmental awareness. It expanded in 2012 to include provincial parks in the ThompsonNicola, Okanagan, East Kootenay, Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island regions. The program’s increasing popularity builds on a 2011 expansion that was assisted by BC Parks funding of $5,000. Additional growth in 2012 was possible due to continued support from BC Parks, as well as $80,000 from the Habitat Conservation Trust Foundation, $35,000 from the Columbia Basin Trust Fund and increased funding of $50,000 from the Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC. For 2013, the Learn to Fish program aims to serve another 25,000 people at various locations throughout B.C. This will include

more than 80 programs in provincial parks, reaching more than 3,000 youth and their families. “We’re gratified that our Learn to Fish program has done so well since it was introduced to B.C.’s provincial parks. By bringing angling to youth and adults who have not participated previously, we are promoting a healthy outdoor activity that instils conservation awareness and will improve long-term stewardship of our natural resources goals we share with BC Parks,” said Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC president Don Peterson. Quick Facts about the Learn to Fish Program and BC Parks: ■ More than 60 per cent of provincial parks Learn to Fish program participants in 2012 were young people.

■ Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC is a private, non-profit society that works with the government of B.C. to enhance and conserve B.C.’s freshwater fisheries resources. ■ Overall participation in the Learn to Fish program throughout B.C. increased by 48 per cent in 2012. ■ The Learn to Fish program ties into the B.C. school curriculum, focusing on environmental conservation and breaking down barriers to recreational fishing. ■ In 2011, the Learn to Fish program in BC Parks was supported by funding from the Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC, the Habitat Conservation Trust Foundation, Columbia Basin Trust Fund, BC Gaming, Rio Tinto Alcan, the Government of Canada and BC Parks.

Fishing 2X14 Corner with Don Daniels email: dond@campbellrivermirror.com @ccamp My first fishing trip to Campbell River was in the summer of 1981. I received a phone call from Blair Mclean who Glendale Cove Bunkhouse was operating a fishing camp at Glendale Cove. I was working in Calgary as a broadcaster with CHQR Radio when the Calgary Flames first moved to Canada. It would be my first t to the area and my trip fishing partners were Doug Barkley former Detroit R Red Wing defenseman aand Flames radio color commentator, and joining us was Dave Donnelly a travel agent from Banff. O On the 3 day trip we p Rap Rick de Gui Don Daniels & hhooked into a number of fish and Doug Barkley hooked into a 37 pounder, my biggest was a 27 pound spring. The 3 day fishing trip was our first experience fishing in this area. The camp was a bunkhouse setting and the buildings are gone today. Rick Rapp our fishing guide took us on the river to fly fish for some trout and that afternoon the fish were quite visible in the pools. Minnow imitation flies were catching fish and we headed back to Our Catch camp.

Last week I headed to Courtenay and the new run of chums had just arrived in the Puntledge River. Maple Lake is a great spot to fish for trout during the mild weather. Many of the local rivers in Campbell are fishable for trout and the chums are done. Next week I have some shared fishing stories from readers who have contacted me at the Fishing Corner.

There will be prize draws and refreshments. “Everyone is to come and enjoy,” Koropecki says. “There will be no chairs or tables, just wide open space to hula hoop the entire time. “There will be different vendors selling fun little things that hoopers generally like, as well as hoop rentals so even if you’ve never tried hula hooping before you can take one out for a spin.”

Dig into NIC horticulture Turn your love of gardening into a career with NIC’s new Landscape Horticulture programs starting this February. Whether you want to work toward your Interprovincial (Red Seal) in Vancouver Island’s only Level 1 apprenticeship training in landscape horticulture, or grow your hobby, you can train while you work this winter and graduate in May, just in time for peak gardening season. The Landscape Horticulture Apprenticeship Training – Level 1 Enhanced program is designed for people employed at landscape companies, municipal parks, golf courses, garden centres, nurseries, and other related horticulture businesses. Industry Training Authority-approved curriculum developed by the horticulture industry, while learning the skills to work industry-wide. Courses are offered evenings and weekends in horticulture equipment, plant ID, plant science, plant health, understanding soil, and maintenance skills. NIC’s enriched curriculum also includes landscape maintenance and design, giving you extra skills attractive to employers. Up until now, students starting an apprenticeship program have had to go to the mainland to get their training. “Having a parttime apprenticeship program on the Island is a wonderful opportunity for those who want to study horticulture locally”,

says Anne Kadwell , CEO of HortEducation BC. “It makes it much more affordable and means that they do not have to be away from work or family.” The program gives local landscape companies and apprentices access to industry-recognized skills close to home. “Landscape Horticulture became a Red Seal Trade in Canada in 2008 and now has provincial certification in BC,” says Jim Pelton, Director of Training Delivery at the Industry Training Authority. “Horticulture apprenticeship links learning and employment: participants complete four levels of technical training at an educational institution while accumulating work-based training hours with a sponsor.

Apprenticeship benefits the apprentice, the local business sponsor, industry and the community.” Not sure you want to go the apprenticeship route? NIC also offers a part-time Landscape Horticulture Fundamentals certificate this winter. “We wanted to provide an option for the recreational gardener who wants to increase their knowledge or turn a hobby into a career,” says Cheryl O’Connell, NIC’s Dean of the School of Continuing Education and Training. ”This program is also a good starting point for someone who wants to test the waters before going onto further, or more specialized horticulture training.” Three free information sessions will be held at NIC’s

Comox Valley campus for prospective employers and students: ■ Learn How to Sponsor a Landscape Horticulture Apprentice with HortEducation BC (for employers). ■ Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2:30-4:30 pm at the NIC’s Trades Training Centre, Rm. 101. ■ Landscape Horticulture Programs Information Session (for prospective students & apprentices). Registration required, see www.nic.bc.ca/ continuingeducation to sign up. ■ Saturday, Nov. 24, 4-5:30 p.m. ■ Thursday, Dec. 6, 6:30-8 p.m. Contact Julia Peters at 250-923-9724 or julia.peters@nic.bc.ca for further information or visit www.nic.bc.ca.

Focus on the whole to beat winter’s aches Just as the arrival of winter means several months of cold, wet weather, for many it also marks the return of body aches and pains. Traditional therapies such as acupuncture and moxibustion (a heat therapy that involves the burning of the Chinese herb ai ye, or mugwort) help warm the body,

Unlike conventional Western medicine, which tends to suppress symptoms through specific prescriptions, Chinese medicine strives to harmonize your body’s natural functions and thereby stimulate

its innate healing capacities. You may just have sore knees, but that pain indicates a broader imbalance in the body. By focusing on the whole, rather than the parts, your general health will improve.

Not sleeping... because • Diabetes? • Arthritis? • Neuropathy? • Fibromyalgia? • Sleep Apnea? • Too hot or too cold • Tossing and turning at night? • Longer to recuperate after working out? REFRESHED AND READY TO START THE DAY Andy and I really enjoy our Celliant Sleep Rejuvenation System Model 3. We both wake up feeling refreshed and ready to start our day. I have neck and back issues and the bed has helped me immensely. Even if I am sore from a workout, after 1 or 2 nights sleep I am ok again. I would highly recommend the Celliant Sleep Rejuvneation System series. Christine RELIEF FOR FIBROMYALGIA SUFFERRER I recently purchased one of your mattresses from a local mattress store and I wanted to tell you how happy I am with it. I was having a hard time finding a mattress that would not cause me pain, especially when I turned over. My hips and shoulders are very sensitive due to my fibromyalgia. I have purchased many mattresses in the past few years trying to find one that won’t hurt. My legs cramp and pressure from the mattress causes enough discomfort that I need to get up in the night and rest in my recliner. I have had your product for four months and I have been sleeping through the night for the first time in over six years. I can roll over and feel no pain. The flat surface and the soft, supportive feel is unlike anything I’ve experienced before. Keep up the good work and know that you are making a difference in people’s lives. Thank you. MarciRoser, Eugene, OR NO MORE INSOMNIA, COMFORT FOR SCIATICA AND HIP PAIN My daughter and myself recently purchased these beds. Penny, who suffers from insomnia, claims that she doesn’t wake up in the night so much, and in general falls asleep faster and stays asleep. I have sciatica which causes a lot of hip pain, especially at night. Recently I had to leave my bed and sleep in the spare room bed, which caused a lot of pain. As soon as I got into my Celliant Sleep Rejuvenation System, the difference was amazing. I like that the temperature seems to be adjusted and I am no longer too hot or too cold. We have recommended the mattress to friends, chiropractors, and doctors. Shirley A, Parksville and Penny A, North Vancouver COMFORT FOR COMPRESSED VERTEBRAE I am an injured ex-military veteran with 4 compressed vertebrae. Prior to sleeping on our Celliant Sleep Rejuvenation System, I tossed and turned all night hardly sleeping at all. Now, I fall asleep within minutes and wake up feeling the most incredible amount of energy. This is a FANTASTIC mattress! Jerry Zimmerman, Comox Valley, BC
