Bocking runs for nDP once more Veteran candidate wins Maple Ridge-Mission by Phil M elnyc h u k staff reporter
Mike Bocking will again represent the NDP. The veteran campaigner was selected Sunday by the Maple Ridge-Mission NDP riding association to run in next May’s provincial election. Bocking Bocking defeated Maple Ridge music lawyer Bob D’Eith 81-45 to win the nomination at a meeting in Silverdale. “It was a long campaign,” Bocking said Monday, noting the two had been competing for 14 months. The results, however, weren’t a surprise since both candidates basically knew who was supporting them. see Nominee, p9

Two more witnesses: rave trial ‘Was there an attempt to hide what was going on?’ by M o ni s ha M a r tin s staff reporter
A trial for a young man accused of posting pornographic photographs on Facebook taken during a rave in Pitt Meadows two years ago resumed Tuesday with two more witnesses describing what they saw that night. Both teens stressed the couple photographed during a Sept. 10,
2010 party were having consensual sex. Paige Morgan, who was 16 at the time, told the court she watched the couple copulating in a field on a property off Harris Road. You would have called police if you believed there was an assault taking place, asked Marvin Stern, representing Dennis John Allen Warrington, who is accused of posting the photos on Facebook. Warrington faces one count each of possessing and distributing child porn, since the girl in the photographs was 16 at the time of the rave.

“Was there any attempt to hide what was going on?” asked Stern. “She and the guy were not trying to hide at all,” replied Morgan. “It was out in the open.” Morgan did not know the identity of the couple, but later learned the girl’s name. She also saw the girl at the MacDonald’s restaurant on Harris Road after the rave. “She was bawling her eyes out because she lost her phone,” Morgan testified, adding that later “[the victim] seemed happy, like nothing was wrong.” She also told the court that the
people closest to the victim were older, Indo-Canadian men, one who had a video camera. None of the men have testified during the trial. Following the rave, photographs of the teens having sex began to spread via text messages and social media. Stern asked Morgan if what happened at the rave became a hot topic of conversation amongst teens in high school and whether there was any suggestion that the teen had been sexually assaulted. see Trial, p9

Report outlines the way forward Taking property out of ALR no longer way to go by Phil M elnyc h u k staff reporter
Some pathways for Maple Ridge’s future has been sketched out in a 100-page report perused by council Monday. The Commercial and Industrial Strategy, 2012-2042, which will be reviewed by staff and politicians and eventually the public, doesn’t suggest using the Agricultural Land Reserve to make room for industrial expansion. “We’re recommending that it’s a risky strategy to base hopes on getting lands out of the ALR,” JeanPierre Raulot-Lapointe, with GP Rollo and Associates, explained after the meeting. Because that land may not be approved for exclusion from the reserve, other options need to be considered, he added. The comment seems to contradict Maple Ridge’s official community plan, which says the district could try to exclude farmland to create employment-generating lands. Coun. Michael Morden said the report reflects the recent affirmation of the Agricultural Land Commission’s main mission – to protect farmland. “This ship has sailed,” said Morden. “It’s about meeting their mandate. It’s not about spending all this time dealing with permit applications. “Everybody needs to get over that.” Land commission chair Richard Bullock said earlier this year that the commission will be cutting back the time it spends reviewing exclusion applications. “The signs that we’re getting from the Agricultural Land Commission, whatever comes out, will be it, for a long time,” added public works manager Frank Quinn. Any applicant who tries to remove land now must wait five years before reapplying. In a similar vein, the report also says that development should be focused within Maple Ridge’s urban boundaries rather than looking for vacant land outside the built-up areas of the district. “For me, their finding reiterated the importance of that,” planning director Christine Carter told council. Two applications to exclude land on the west side of 105th Avenue for development are now before the ALC, while the district could make its own exclusion application for land east of 105th Avenue. Both requests would be part of the district’s long-term plan for devel-

The owners of the log sort yard along the Haney Bypass have proposed a waterfront development for the property, which would fit with the district’s new commercial and industrial strategy. oping the area. The report points out half a dozen areas where Maple Ridge can expand its industrial capacity within its current urban borders: • Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure lands beside the Haney Bypass comprise 38 acres, could be one site where light industry could develop, although slopes and streams complicate development; • up to 60 acres could be used for industry or light manufacturing at 232nd Street and 128th Avenue, along the approaches to Golden Ears Provincial Park – possibly zoning could include accommodation for artisans through live-work living spaces. • Albion Industrial Park also could be used for industrial expansion, although infrastructure improvements would be needed; • farther afield, along the Lougheed Highway near 250th Street, two parcels totalling 20 acres on either side of Kwantlen First Nations property could be developed, although they also have slope and stream issues. The report says that Maple Ridge has time to find industrial land, but it should start the preparations now. If council heeds or incorporates the advice, plans for Albion flats, along Lougheed Highway and 105th Avenue, could also change. One recommendation says employment should be a “major component” of developing Albion flats.
Raulot-Lapointe told council that he foresaw any retail in the area serving only the local community rather than big box stores. That contrasts with Maple Ridge’s current concept plan, which calls for big box stores, light industry and recreational uses throughout Albion flats. “The recommendations were clear, that there needs to be an industrial component and we need to have a look at that to see what generates jobs for us,” Morden said. By 2040, Maple Ridge will need between another 170 and 230 acres for industrial use, in order to provide local jobs for a growing population.
“This ship has sailed.” Coun. Mike Morden, Maple Ridge
When it comes to shopping, the report recommends no big new shopping areas covered with big box operations. Instead, the downtown should continue to be the priority for “all types of retail,” including big box stores. There’s “no urgent need” to find additional commercial land, especially when the future development of Albion flats is considered, nor should industrial land be converted
to shopping malls, says the report. Instead, it says the downtown incentive plan should be continued, land assembly should be encouraged, and perhaps there should be beautification program, where business owners can get matching grants. Metro Vancouver has projected 48,000 total jobs in Maple Ridge by 2041, up from a present 23,000. But Maple Ridge is already doing better than other cities in creating local jobs, the report points out. In 2006, about 35 per cent of Maple Ridge’s population were locally employed. Only Surrey, at 38 per cent, had a higher percentage. By comparison, Langley township’s local employment rate was 23 per cent, while New Westminster’s was only 20 per cent. Coun. Al Hogarth said most of the report’s findings were expected. The development of the industrial area at the far north of 256th Street will take years and still depend on extension of Abernethy Way east to 256th Street. But that road project will cost millions and could be a decade away. Hogarth supported the plan for 256th Street, but it will take time to develop, adding other purposes should be considered such as recreational, tourism or education. “Are there other uses that could happen there?” Council will review a staff synopsis of the report in the new year, with open houses to follow.
So far in 2012, two bears have been killed in Maple Ridge over conflicts with humans, compared with 15 the year prior. That’s a measure of success that Bear Aware coordinator Rosie Wijenberg can point to as the district Bear Aware program goes into hibernation after its first year in operation. She has spoken to children at all local schools in high bear-conflict areas. Wijenberg knows her message got through, both because she got requests for more presentations, and because when she was done the kids were “playing bear.” Wijenberg and volunteers also went door-to-door in many high-conflict areas, talking to people about ensuring potential food sources – garbage and fruit – were not available. She plans to continue that work in Year 2, with an added emphasis on rural areas, and consulting with some property owners in rural areas to encourage electrical fences to keep bears out. She will encourage more bear-resistant garbage cans in high-conflict areas, as well. Wijenberg will also work to establish a fruit gleaning program for next year, noting that it is the premier attractant. Fruit brings bears closer to homes, where they will find other food sources like garbage, bird feeders and pet food. While Bear Aware is standing down until spring, most bears in the region will remain active – particularly those that have become food conditioned. The Conservation Officer Service (COS) urges residents to avoid human-bear conflicts and a potential $230 fine under the Wildlife Act for accessible attractants. • Residents are encouraged to call the COS via the RAPP line at 1-877-952-7277 to report human-bear conflicts.

The Christmas season is a time of giving, and some fraudsters are hoping to take advantage of that generosity to line their own pockets. Lorraine Bates is the co-chair of the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Christmas Hamper Society, and said impostors claiming to be from the society often make the rounds this time of year. “In the last few years there have been several incidences of misrepresentation,” she said. “Some impostors identify themselves with organization names that are very similar to our society’s to confuse and take advantage of the donors.” Bates said the Maple Ridge –Pitt Meadows Christmas Hamper So-

Bates wants to make sure the donations intended for her organization actually reach them. Anyone interested in donating should contact the hamper society directly if they are unsure where or how to donate, or to arrange a pick-up. “When you have a donation pick-up, the office will advise you of the name of the volunteer that will come to your business, or school and that person will have photo ID to present to you,” said Bates. A Ridge Meadows RCMP spokesperson said the Christmas season is a popular time of year for fraudsters to come out of the woodwork and take advantage of people’s generosity.

The RCMP’s website (www.rcmp.gc.ca) lists a number of scams making the rounds this holiday season, including fake charity appeals. In this scam, targets will receive an unsolicited phone call or email, asking them to donate to charity. The RCMP warns to be wary of appeals that tug at your heart strings, especially pleas involving current events, and ask for written information about the charity, including name, address and telephone number. A legitimate charity or fund-raiser will give you information about the charity’s mission, how your donation will be used and proof that your contribution is tax deductible. Waste of money News flash: The new Port Mann bridge is open and by all reports is operating reasonably well with two lanes in each direction open for traffic. What, you knew that already? Perhaps you should tell the provincial government. Although many will welcome full operation of the bridge (eight of 10 lanes will be open on Dec. 1), there are those in Victoria who believe Metro Vancouver drivers are still ignorant of this latest development and, thus require constant reminding of its existence and its time-saving benefits. How else to explain the radio advertisements regaling motorists about the benefits of this, the largest undertaking in the $3.3-billion Port Mann Highway 1 Improvement project? Most people will have noticed by now that the long, laborious and often controversial construction project is nearing completion; they don’t need a series of advertisements — paid for with taxpayers’ dollars — to find out what is as nakedly obvious as the connection between these radio spots and the May 2013 provincial election. Still, there is a disingenuous optimism to these ads in that they hope that people will be convinced through constant repetition that the paying of tolls — no matter how odious, costly and painful to household budgets they are — will be ultimately worth it because, well, you guessed it, time will be saved. Households on both sides of the bridge will have to weigh the costs of tolls versus time-saving benefits and will decide to fork over the cash, detour to avoid them, move or change jobs. These are complex calculations that are unlikely to be affected by a series of simplistic advertisements no matter how well meaning. It’s also naive to expect these ads will change the minds of those who opposed the highway improvement project from the start. It’s highly unlikely these ads, no matter how craftily made, will encourage these folks to now suddenly champion it. Advertising can be helpful and informative but telling people what they already know is a waste of money. – Black Press

Predictable responses over poverty VICTORIA – B.C.’s ritual day of shame over child poverty has come and gone once again, with politicians trading blame and time-worn talking points. The occasion was an annual gathering staged at the B.C. Teachers’ Federation B.C. Views office in downtown Tom Fletcher Vancouver. It is organized by First Call, an umbrella group sponsored by the BCTF, the B.C. Government Employees’ Union and a collection of like-minded “anti-poverty activists,” as they describe themselves in their latest report. The familiar script unfolded. The report misinterprets federal income statistics from two years ago and calls for a long list of uncosted, but hugely expensive measures that they assert will make B.C. the first jurisdiction in human history to eradicate poverty. A sampling: provide raises for employees and contractors at all levels of government until they are making an unspecified “living wage,” because we all know how public sector workers uniquely suffer from pay and pension inequality. Raise the minimum wage again and index it to inflation. Establish universal public dental care, prescription drug and eye care programs, and daycare. (Dismiss targeted programs that already provide this.) Raise welfare rates and expand eligibility for employment insurance. Cut tuition
and provide more student grants. Eliminate homelessness. And so it continues toward a socialist Utopia and certain bankruptcy for provincial and federal governments already deeply in the red. I wrote about these numbers when Statistics Canada released them back in June. They showed a modest improvement nationally and provincially in what they measure, which is not poverty, but the relative relationship between income groups. First Call dismisses that improvement as “a dismal record.” My point is not to deny that there are many poor people in B.C. and Canada. There are. But at this point, we don’t even have a reliable way of measuring the problem, let alone effective solutions. The report states: “Statistics Canada said the child poverty rate in Greater Vancouver was 18.4 per cent in 2010 …” No, Statistics Canada didn’t say that. It said what it always says, that “LowIncome Cut-Off,” or LICO figures, are not an accurate measure of poverty. The political response was equally predictable. Veteran NDP MP Libby Davies led the charge in Ottawa. The government must establish a national anti-poverty strategy with firm annual goals, she said, reciting the identical script of the B.C. NDP. Davies didn’t mention that Manitoba is among the provinces with such a plan. It’s the only province that finished below B.C. in the percentage of children living in low-income homes. These plans are mainly gesture politics, providing the appearance of action. Social Development Minister Stepha-
nie Cadieux spoke on behalf of the B.C. Liberal government, and she, too, stuck to a familiar script. The best path out of poverty is a job, she said. This is true, but also obvious. Then Cadieux went on about the “B.C. Jobs Plan,” which has its own sorry record of misrepresented federal statistics. Here’s one of the report’s more blindingly obvious section headings: “Child poverty concentrated in big cities.” No kidding. The whole population is concentrated in big cities.
First Call dismisses that improvement as “a dismal record.” Herein lies a clue that is missed by “activists” for ever-larger government. Poor people are increasingly crowded into the most expensive places. If I’m on welfare or working in a lowwage job and receiving a provincial rent subsidy (one of those things LICO doesn’t measure), should I live in downtown Victoria or Vancouver? Shouldn’t I relocate to a smaller community where housing is cheaper? There are lots of complications to this, but some kind of incentive to relocate could help big and small communities.

The News/letters Put cell tower on district land Editor, The News: Re: Cellphone tower rattling residents (The News, Nov. 7). As reported over the last couple of weeks, our oh so friendly telecom giant Telus is once again conspiring with a land owner to place a cell tower on private property. Telus obviously believes it is OK to deface the most publicly accessible iconic view of the Golden Ears mountains. This tower is not an emergency. There are other options. Towers currently at Dewdney Trunk Road and 240th Street are underutilized and municipal land is also available. As the land use authority, our municipal council is actively developing its own policy. Telus has not even fulfilled the requirements of Industry Canada’s Default Policy. For these and other reasons, this tower should not be located in that field. B.C. education is already skill-based Editor, The News: Re: Province to review grad requirements (The News, Nov. 7). Like our MLA Marc Dalton, I believe we do have a “world class education system” (though not without its faults), so I puzzle at the systemic, untested alterations being promoted for implementation by our provincial and district education administrations. Specifically, the desire to see “less content-based assessment, and more skill-based assessment” seems wildly out-of-date. You don’t have to be a teacher to see the problems with this. As a concerned parent, even I know that more often than not, assessment already is skills-based. One’s writing in an English class is likelier assessed on the mastery of the skill demonstrated than on any content knowledge, even if content is used to fuel composition. In math, formulae and calculators are provided for students, so that all they have to do is show that they understand how and not what. Even when it seems that content is being assessed, often it is in fact still skills that are the focus: did the student have the skill to pay attention and take notes
(from the board or on one’s own – both basic skills), maintain an organized binder, study effectively, and retain salient details so that precious time in life is not wasted looking up on one’s smartphone the meaning behind every polysyllabic word or historical allusion? Furthermore, let us not throw the baby out with the bath water: there is some content that needs to be internalized. We cannot get by in life on skills alone – great as they may be; we need our doctors, nurses, lawyers, and politicians, even educators, to know a wealth of content along with their varied skills. There has long been the argument that “memorizing facts and figures isn’t as important as it once was” (since the internet became ubiquitous, anyway), but let us not overlook that a person who has internalized certain facts and figures generally understands them better – and can apply them better – than a person who needs to look them up. Moreover, the need to memorize information would have been obviated . if at all, with the establishment of local libraries, for the difference between these and smartphones is only a matter of speed. As we
can see, though, people still need to know stuff. What concerns me most, perhaps, about this new “plan” is, ironically, the very content of the skills-based curriculum, the only aspect of which that has legitimacy at a secondary level, is “creative thinking” – although critical thinking, a more valuable skill, is notably absent. The other “skills” are so broad and uneducational that I wonder how our policy-makers and administrators define education. “Cooperation” is a parenting issue that schools can only attempt to reinforce, nothing more. “Selfmotivation” simply isn’t a skill; it’s a trait that again depends mostly on a child’s up-bringing. I hope “decision-making” is a synonym for critical thinking, otherwise its obscurity is laughable. To say that these skills “give students the skills necessary to be successful in the future” is to say that something as vague as decision-making is all that is really required, for certainly that broadly covers all other skills. Being successful in the future means expanding our expectations, not limiting them to four, poorly-defined concepts that are already being taught and mod-
eled and reinforced. Show me a classroom where these qualities are not fostered. Unfortunately, the most recent “experiment” in the remedial summer program is being touted as a model to follow on the path to this new curriculum and “education-system”. This, after only one month of often educationally-irrelevant field-trips. I would hope the long-term effects of such a method of schooling would be closely examined before implementing it. Certainly, a near 100 per cent success rate is impressive, but how does that compare to the success rate of the “traditional” summer-school classes? Furthermore, how is success being defined? It seems to me that the government’s New Education Plan has redefining success as its primary goal, and I wonder what this will mean for my and my children’s futures living in this future society where success means not the ability to better comprehend, consider, and communicate, but rather the exploration of an area of interest and a presentation or project that proves you didn’t completely waste your time. Nominee from front
“The numbers are right in line with what we thought would happen,” Bocking said. Next spring will be his fifth attempt at getting elected. Bocking ran federally against Conservative MP Randy Kamp in 2004, 2006 and 2008, losing each time. He ran against current Liberal MLA Marc Dalton in Maple RidgeMission in 2009, losing by 68 votes. Maple Ridge-Mission’s western boundary is 224th Street and extends east to Cedar Street in Mission. “I think people have had enough of the B.C. Liberals and so I think there’s a perception that we’ve got a very good chance to win this riding, because of the very close result last time.” This time around, Bocking said voters will remember the growing provincial deficit, the promise of the government not to bring in the HST and the attempted closing of the emergency ward of Mission Memorial Hospital.
Bocking is currently president of the Media Union of B.C., Local 2000, a position he’ll maintain unless he’s successful in his run to become MLA. “We’ll have even more volunteers this time.” He’ll also have six months to prepare for the vote, while he had only six weeks during the previous election. Bocking said transportation and transit are at the top of the list of issues, as well as health care and education. “The environment is becoming more of an issue as well.” Honesty and integrity in government, he added, are other concerns. Bocking said the NDP may put some efforts into winning Mission-Abbotsford, with the retirement of Liberal Randy Hawes. He pointed out the NDP grabbed a third of the votes last time. Nomination for that riding takes place in December.

“From the very beginning, everyone has said it was not rape,” she replied. The second witness, Brittany Plamondon, 18, testified that she was alerted to the couple at the rave because “people were laughing,” at the girl. She watched briefly, then she walked away. Warrington’s trial resumed Tuesday after a month-long hiatus, prompted by defence’s call of a mistrial. Warrington is the only adult still facing charges in connection with the rave. Colton McMorris was charged with sexually assaulting the 16-yearold girl photographed at the rave, but the charge was stayed in February after Crown found the available evidence was unlikely to land a conviction. Four more days have been set aside for the trial, which continues in Port Coquitlam Provincial Court at the end of January. The young woman has yet to testify at the trial. She was scheduled to take the stand in October, but her testimony has been repeatedly delayed.

Thornhill: still a vibrant community Looki ng Bac k by Fred Braches
G
rant Hill, rising prominently above the surrounding land northeast of Albion, is generally known as Thorn Hill, or Thornhill, after James Thorne, who took out a Crown Grant for 160 acres east of 240th Street (Baker Road) and north of 108th Avenue. The slope of the hill stretches along the Fraser River from Albion to Whonnock. At both ends and along the Fraser the land rises steeply, offering spectacular views. The slope along the Fraser and behind the Whonnock post office quickly became a preferred residential area. What attracted settlers to the lower parts of Grant Hill even more was access to the river (the highway of its day), the railroad, store and post office. The higher land further away from the river, the Thornhill area of today, was too far away from the amenities of civilization and only became inhabited after the arrival of the automobile. Before that, Ashton W. Spilsbury’s 160 acres, above 98th Avenue on top of Spilsbury Road, was considered to be in Whonnock, though it included the core of today’s Thornhill. Even after the automobile opened the Thornhill area for settlement, it continued to be seen as part of the historical communities Whonnock or Albion. In the years following the First World War, Japanese farmers started settling in the Thornhill area. Thirteen Japanese farming families owned acreage west of 256th Street, and another 15 lived east of 256th Street. They were among the first to open the land for agriculture. After the Japanese were evicted in 1942, their lands became available to a growing community of young white settlers and their families. In the early 1960s, a door-to-door survey was held to establish the boundaries of Whonnock. This was done as part of a successful community effort to restore a second “n” to the name Whonnock that had been lost just before the war. Residents living in the Thornhill area east of 256th St. did not hesitate to identify themselves with Whonnock as their place of residence. But at the same time, they were aware that the Thornhill area was a neighbour-

The Thornhill elementary School opened in 1959 with two teachers: Mrs. Norman and Mr. Peacock. This is Margaret Norman’s class of 1959–1960. hood by itself within Whonnock. The 1950s and 1960s were the time of the birth of Thornhill as a community. This was when Thornhill got its own school. At first, the Thornhill youngsters attended Whonnock School. But in 1959, the number of children in the area justified the opening of an elementary school in the centre of Thornhill. Margaret Norman taught at that school in the early years and recalls the energy and enthusiasm of the neighbourhood. Before long the Thornhill Community Association came to life, and the members started
fundraising for the construction of a community hall. The hall was a tiny affair, but as from 1965 the proud residents of Thornhill had a meeting place of their own. Even the Whonnock Women’s Institute preferred meeting at the new Thornhill hall rather than in the derelict Whonnock Memorial Hall, of which they were the custodians. Before 1950, the Gazette and other newspapers never mention Thornhill as a distinct area or community. In 1952, the Gazette reports about the first anniversary of the Thorn Hill Women’s Institute, carefully adding “(Whonnock)” behind the name to clarify the
location for the readers. It was only during the last decade or so that the location of the Thornhill area became generally known and started to be referred to as a distinct community. An impetus came from the well-published and worthy action of Betty and Klaus von Hardenberg and their neighbours to protect what became known as the Thornhill aquifer, threatened by the advance of new development encroaching from Albion. However, the main publicity of the name came from the real estate profession, who prefer the name Thornhill over Albion or, even worse, Whonnock. The Thornhill Community Association continues to thrive, and the Thornhill Hall, more spacious now than it was at first, is still well used by the community. Thornhill may not be as old as the historical communities of Maple Ridge, but what it lacks in years, it makes up in energy and vibrancy. Fred Braches is a local historian who lives in Whonnock.

SPCA doesn’t support having serval cats by Phil Mel nyc hu k staff reporter
Owners of serval cats, the bobcat-sized felines from Africa, may have to make a strong case to get their cats accepted under Maple Ridge’s new animal control bylaw. Because the SPCA doesn’t like the idea of the mini-leopard living in people’s homes. “We have so many house cats that need homes,” said Sara Dubois, manager of wildlife services with the B.C. SPCA. Metro Vancouver area residents will approach

Maple Ridge council next week and ask them to change the bylaw to allow serval cats that have been raised in captivity for three generations. “We would disagree,” Dubois said of the request. Maple Ridge’s new animal bylaw, which has received three readings, prohibits all but domesticated cats or those that are registered under The International Cat Association. That means the savannah cat, a cross breed between serval cat and a house cat, is allowed under the new bylaw.
Dubois said that the SPCA wanted the serval cat included in the controlled alien species regulation, part of the Wildlife Act. Vancouver has banned ownership of the cat, she pointed out. She understands while people would own such an animal. “I can see the appeal. It’s a very beautiful cat.” But keeping them as a pet presents challenges, such as ensuring they have the right diet and exercise or veterinary care. And there are several risks to the serval, if it escapes captivity, mostly
to the cat itself, rather than the public. “They’ve very often have been declawed.” And without hunting skills in a cold climate, it would have a tough time. Serval cat owners from around the Lower Mainland recently gathered at municipal hall, demanding a change to the new law. They also collected a 600-name petition for the cause. Serval cats originate in Africa and are larger than domestic cats, but have been in Canada since the 1960s and have been domesticated for thousands of years, said White.

Helping track immunizations ImmunizeBC’s new automated text message immunization reminder will help parents stay up to date on their baby’s vaccinations. New parents who sign up for the service will get automated text message reminders to make appointments with their health care provider for their child’s two-, four-, six-, 12- and 18-month immunizations. “Immunizations save lives and are the best way for a parent to protect their child from certain infectious diseases,” said B.C. Health Minister Margaret MacDiarmid. “In an age where tex-
ting is increasingly a normal way to communicate, it makes sense to leverage it as a way to remind parents to stay up to date on their baby’s vaccinations.” People of any age can also sign up to get reminders for other scheduled immunization appointments. The reminders are helpful for any vaccination that requires multiple doses, such as the human papillomavirus vaccine (HPV) program for young women born in 1991, 1992 and 1993. Signing up to receive ImmunizeBC text message reminders is easy:
text “sign up” to 604757-2705; or bisit www. immunizebc.ca and look for the Get Text Message Reminders link. To stop receiving the messages at any time simply type “stop” to 604-757-2705. To start again, type “start.” Text messaging is one of several new features from ImmunizeBC to encourage immunization. The ImmunizeBC website now offers a personalized vaccination calendar, public health unit finder, an interactive frequently asked questions (FAQ)
application, and a live chat session with a nurse during regular business hours. You can also share your story about the value of immunization at www.ihaveimmunity. com. It’s a province-wide initiative to raise awareness of the value of immunization through stories, resources and information. The B.C. Centre for Disease Control is an agency of the Provincial Health Services Authority, a specialist in prevention. • Learn more at immunizebc.ca or healthlinkbc.ca.

Health tips to help prevent cancer With temperatures dropping and the arrival of the holiday, it may be tempting to slip into unhealthy habits that can increase the risk of developing many preventable cancers. Lifestyle choices have a considerable impact on preventing a large number of cancers. “Food is a central component of living and what’s more important is eating the right kinds of food. The science is indisputable. Diet and a healthy lifestyle contribute to the prevention of a myriad of diseases, including cancer,” said Ryna Levy-Milne of the B.C. Cancer Agency. “Five gives you 50,” a message from the cancer agency, reminds British Columbians that five lifestyle adjustments can help reduce more than 50 per cent of cancers, when followed year-round. • Eliminate tobacco use: whether chewed,
smoked or inhaled first or second-hand, tobacco kills thousands of Canadians each year. Even third-hand smoke, or the smoke trapped in hair, skin, clothes, walls, drapes, carpets, furniture and toys can irritate the lungs and potentially cause harm to the young and vulnerable. • Eat fresh, whole foods: The temptation to indulge in calorie-laden seasonal treats may become more pronounced as the festive season draws closer, but the link between obesity and cancer is proven. Obesity accounts for 14 per cent of all cancer deaths in men and 20 per cent in women. • Maintain a healthy weight: Researchers suggest limiting weight gain in adulthood by prioritizing exercise and healthy eating. Ways to combat weight gain include regular physical activity and the inclusion of vegetables,
fruit, bean, lean protein and whole grain-rich diet, as well as the limiting of alcohol, processed meats, sugar and salt. • Get regular exercise: Regular physical activity such as exercise that causes a sweat or brisk walking for at least 30 minutes every day is important. The aim, as endurance levels improve, is to increase activity to at least 60 minutes of moderate exercise or a minimum of 30 minutes of vigorous physical activity every day. • Eliminate sunbed use and limit UV exposure from the sun: Whether a snowbird flying south or a skier hitting the slopes, researchers warn that vigilance against UV rays is just as important in the fall and winter months as it is in the summer. The sun’s rays can still shine through on cloudy days and when combined with higher altitudes with snow on the
ground, the sun’s reflection can cause an added risk of sunburns. • For more information, visit www.bccancer.bc.ca/ PPI/Prevention/default. htm.

Colours and clothes were the inspiration for Tiffany Stone’s third book of children’s poems by M o ni s ha M a r tin s staff reporter
T
iffany Stone’s pants burst with poetry in rectangles of mauve, purple and pale pink. Each colourful patch tells a tale, just like the heels of her shoes, painted in rainbow hues. “You can tell I like dressing up,” says Stone, with a grin, her ensemble complete with flowery, fuzzy purple-pink socks and a swish of blue in her bangs. When she dons the jazzy trousers and psychedelic shoes, she can’t help but chase away the blues. “I can be really goofy and as long as it has it’s own sense within the nonsense, kids are very accepting of that,” says Stone, an accomplished poet whose just published her third collection of children’s poems with Tradewind Books. Hard-bound and beautifully illustrated by Stefan Czernecki, Rainbow Shoes is book about colours and clothes - two things that Stone and pre-schoolers adore.
“I love playing with words.” Tiffany Stone, children’s poet
There’s an ode to her purple pants, orange socks, a tale about what pirates where at night and a chance to learn six new words for blue. “I love playing with words,” says Stone, who fell in love with poetry in grade 6, sparked by her teacher’s love for verse. The ideas come to her when she’s driving or late at night. She always has a notebook and pen to scribble them down. To make sure the poems have a groovy rhythm, she read them aloud. Stone completed a bachelor of fine arts in creative writing and playwriting at the University of British Columbia, where she rediscovered writing for kids. “It’s hard to be a published poet and it’s really, really hard to be a published children’s poet,” she says, explaining how she gained the confidence to pursue a career she loves after one of her poems was published in a children’s anthology while at university. Her professors - accomplished children’s authors Sue Ann Alderson and Florence Mc-
Whonnock poet Tiffany Stone has a new book of poetry, inspired by clothes and colours, titled Rainbow Shoes. Neil - were an added inspiration. Stone now works as an editor with Tradewinds and has edited several awardwinning publications including The King Has Goat Ears (Tradewind Books), and more recently Roll On: Rick Hansen Wheels Around the World (Greystone). “It’s such joy to work with others who speak poetry because not a lot of people do,” she says. In addition to books, she write poetry for children’s magazines and will have a poem in the March 2013 issue of Chirp. Writing for kids gives her a large canvas and wide scope. “Kids aren’t as bound by reality as grown-
ups are. Kids are newer to language and they enjoy it more,” says Stone. “I think we take it for granted as we get older. So you can put in a crazy word and it’s really exciting to them or make things rhyme that you wouldn’t think of.” And there is an unlimited source of inspiration - from colours and clothes to pirates and naughty animals. The poems in Rainbow Shoes were written during a family RV trip to the Northwest Territories in the summer of 2010. “There was a lot of time spent on the road and since my husband, Carman Easton, was driving and the kids were buckled into their seats, this left me a lot of time for thinking

up poems.” Stone’s three children - Emory, 13, Jewell, 9 and Kaslo, 7 - inspire her creativity but are also her harshest critics. “They are pretty savvy,” says Stone, who tests her rhymes and rhythms on them. “And they are not kind with mom’s work.”
Poetry Rainbow Shoes is available locally at Black Bond Books and online through amazon.ca and Indigo. It will be released in the US and UK spring 2013. To learn more, visit tiffanystone.ca.

Ensemble 2012 coming
11944 Haney Place, Maple Ridge, BC
Annual juried art show and sale at The Act Maple Ridge Art Gallery’s annual juried ‘Ensemble’ exhibition opened ont he weekend with a public reception. The exhibition features small ‘clusters’ of works in all mediums. With the exhibition now in its third year, there is increasingly a sense of anticipation amongst local gallery goers that this show will offer something for everyone, said curator Barbara Duncan. Paintings in a wide variety of styles, as well as ceramics, turned wood and other original art and artisanal work will be shown in ensembles of three to seven works per artist. “Although the show represents mostly local artists, we’ve accepted entries from as far away as Gibsons and Lions Bay,” said Duncan. “I think the opportunity to show work in such a beautiful gallery is part of the attraction. So many of our visitors say they are surprised at both the calibre of our exhibitions and also the

Many of the artists will be present at the opening reception (as below) which is generously sponsored by Thrifty Foods. The exhibition will be offered Tuesday to Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. until Dec. 20 at Maple Ridge Art Gallery (The ACT Theatre) at 11944 Haney Place.

Access to some recreational trails along the right-of-way may be restricted at times during the completion of this work. The new 247 kilometre, 500 kilovolt transmission line, will mostly parallel an existing 500 kilovolt transmission line between the Nicola Substation near Merritt and the Meridian Substation on Westwood Plateau in Coquitlam. The ILM project is planned to be in-service by January 2015. The ILM project will expand the capacity of the transmission system that brings power from generation sources in the North and Southern Interior so that BC Hydro can continue to deliver clean and reliable energy to homes and businesses in the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island.

SRT competes at provincials Injuries derailed a run at a provincial championship for the Samuel Robertson Technical secondary senior boys soccer team. The SRT squad qualified for the provincials for the second straight year, and in its first game of the tournament beat a tough Notre Dame squad 2-1. Spencer Pallone and Jesse Erhardsen were the scorers. Injuries to key players saw the team struggle, and SRT finished 12th with a win, a tie
and three one-goal losses. The tie was against Carihi (Campbell River) 1-1, followed by losses to Smithers 1-0. L.V. Rogers (Nelson) 1-0 and SaHali (Kamloops) 2-1. “We limped into the B.C.s due to injuries and barely crawled out,” remarked coach John Sneddon. Erhardsen was named to the all-star team. “In every game this year Jess proved himself to be the most valuable player on the team,”
said Sneddon. SRT players impressed the university coaches who attended, including Bruce Wilso of UVic and Pat Rohla of Trinity Western University. SRT finished third in the Fraser Valley championship, beating Sands 3-2 in the bronze game on two goals by Pallone and one by Curtis Ogilvie. Only six players return for next season, so 2013 will be a rebuilding year for SRT.

head coach Jeff Boyce. “The referees was really getting into the heads of my players.” But he said the Stampeders, despite their record, were by far the toughest team the 8-2 Knights faced all season. Langley was just the second team to score more than two touchdowns against the Knights. “It was a good game. They took it to us – they were the better team on the day,” said Boyce. He returns most of his players for next season. He has coached the core of the team for 10 seasons – since they were atom players – and would love to get them a championship in their final year. “Next year we’ll probably be just as strong, or stronger,” said Boyce. “We should have a good year.”

The community football season is over in Maple Ridge, as the last team standing has been eliminated. The Ridge Meadow Knights midget squad lost 30-10 to the Langley Stampeders in the semi-final of the Vancouver Mainland Football League playoffs on Saturday at Samuel Robertson Technical field. The surprising Stampeders were 4-6 on the regular season, but have gone on to upset three teams favoured to beat them in the playoffs, and will now play for a championship. The Stampeders scored a touchdown on a play that the Knights players and coaches felt should have been called back for a holding penalty. The controversial non-call made them lose focus, said Knights

Your community. Your classifieds. Anthony Peter Kot Oct 7/66 - Nov 29/11 The saddest day in our lives was saying good bye to you, my husband and our Dad, after battling so courageously to live for two years with kidney cancer. Your strength, determination, and fight never to give up or feel sorry for yourself has taught us how to continue on this path of life without you, one day at a time. You are forever in our hearts and in our thoughts and your legacy will continue to live on in our two beautiful sons as they grow more like you each and every day. Finally free of pain and suffering we know you are smiling down upon us, singing Neil Diamond and Eagles tunes and forever cheering for the Dallas Cowboys!

Anthony Peter Kot Oct 7/66 - Nov 29/11 Dear Tony, one year ago today after a gallant and courageous battle with cancer, we lost you. To the end your zest for life and all it’s beauty kept you strong and determined to battle the ‘’demon’’. You were every mother’s dream of a son-in-law. Your love for my daughter Tanja & our grandsons, Emerson and Marcus, was there for all to see.
