Sunrise Square owner Orla Jensen is fed up with the graffiti that is becoming more and more violent in Willow Point. The area has been the target of a prolific tagger and the RCMP are gathering evidence on what they believe is a single perpetrator.
Graffiti vandals have hit Willow Point hard this month and that has business owner Orla Jensen both angry and alarmed. The latest attack this weekend covered the walls of two buildings Jensen owns at Sunrise Square and included an ominous message: “I want to kill you.” This escalation of the vandalism has Jensen and his tenants, like Dentist Dave Brodie, concerned. Jensen says the vandals have “stepped up their game with threats.” “It’s getting a bit much. Something has to be done. It can’t just keep on happening. We’ve been hit five times in the last two weeks. They’ve also hit Willow Point School, the 7-Eleven and Discovery Foods. The RCMP have had a real problem with this and I don’t think they’ve put their finger on it yet.” The business owner says the police met with him Sunday and seized some evidence. He says it is always the same kids involved because the tags, graffiti signatures, are always repeated with each attack. RCMP Staff Sgt. Troy Beauregard confirms that officers collected evidence over the weekend. “We don’t take these things lightly and we don’t want it to go unchecked.” Beauregard says police believe one person is involved in the latest graffiti incident and he warns that the offender could be subject to multiple charges when caught Continued on A3

Council to review controversial purchasing policy KRISTEN DOUGLAS CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR
Council will review a controversial city policy that the mayor tried unsuccessfully to change as recently as this spring. Following the advice of George Cuff, who in September conducted an audit of city hall, and other consultants the city has met with this year, Coun. Claire Moglove requested council take another look at its purchasing policy. The policy, which city staff follows when awarding contracts to outside companies and when purchasing supplies, has been a hot topic at city hall in recent months. “I decided to choose the purchasing policy as perhaps the first one we might want to review for a number of reasons,” Moglove said at last week’s Tuesday council meeting. “One (being) there’s two pieces of the purchasing policy that seem to create controversy from time to time and I’m talking about the lack of a local preference policy and also spending limits.” Mayor Walter Jakeway first voiced concerns over the purchasing policy, in particular how much city staff could spend without council approval, in March. Currently general managers are allowed to spend up to $50,000 without asking for
council’s permission while senior managers can spend up to $100,000 without first running it by council. During this year’s budget planning meetings, Jakeway advocated for lowering that price point to $20,000 out of concern that “the flood gates (would) open” once the budget was approved and staff were free to spend. “In 2012 we’re in tight money times,” he said. “I think it’s very important for council to have a $20,000 review point so council knows what’s going on and so the public knows what’s going on.” Jakeway also believed city staff were setting project budgets too high, so that when Request for Proposals went out, companies were coming back with bids with jacked up prices. However, City Manager Andy Laidlaw said the city was following best practices and any bids that came in under budget were awarded. Jakeway’s request to lower the purchasing policy threshold for city staff was subsequently defeated by the rest of council. More recently, Jakeway was bothered by the second piece of the purchasing policy Moglove identified as controversial – hiring out of town companies. Earlier this month, Jakeway expressed his disappointment in the city hiring
a Vancouver-based company, Graphically Speaking, to redesign the city’s website. “The optics are terrible,” he said. “This was purely a decision of the city manager. City council had no say in the matter.” And that’s because Graphically Speaking’s bid for the work was $56,993, well under
the $100,000 threshold. The contract was awarded based on a points system that determined Graphically Speaking offered the best overall value for the city, although the company did not provide the cheapest quote. Moglove said her motivation in reviewing the purchasing policy is to take
some of the heat off city staff and determine if the policy needs changing. “Instead of criticizing staff when they follow policy, I thought it would be better if we actually review the policy and decide whether we want to keep the policy or whether we want to change the policy,” she said.

One of the main concerns is the cost of repairing the damage, Beauregard says. Jensen confirms that: “Each time they do this I’m looking at three days labour and gallons and gallons of paint. It’s constant ... I can’t keep up. It’s a lot of work and a big expense.” A few years ago the Willow Point Business Improvement Association posted a reward, but the vandalism stopped and no one was caught. Police have promised anonymity if people with information about the graffiti come forward.

The public will have at least six different opportunities to address city council during budget planning for 2013. The first half an hour of financial planning meetings scheduled for Dec. 3 and 4, Jan. 22, and Feb. 25, 26, and 27 will be reserved for public presentations and delegations. The meetings are all tentatively scheduled for 9 a.m. “When important decisions are to be made or are contemplated during the financial planning process, it is necessary to gain a better understanding of the needs/ concerns from the community,” said Laura Ciarniello, the city’s general manager of corporate services. “Public consultation is important to validate council’s leadership and to allow citizens to express their views regarding the options council is debating.” Last year, council was inundated with presentations over anger generated by a 13.6 per cent residential property tax increase. At a meeting in mid-April, 26 people came to the council chambers to voice their opinions, and about 90 members of the public overflowed the gallery to witness
the meeting. Most urged council to go back to the drawing board and reconsider the tax rate, while just one woman spoke in favour of the tax hike in order to maintain city service levels. The public forums also brought some unforgettable characters out the woodwork, most notably pensioner Doug Robson who two years ago brought a gold-plated shovel and a can of tuna to illustrate his point. “No perks, no frills,” said Robson as he held up a plain old, steel shovel next to his golden shovel. “I cannot handle a tax increase or I’m going to have to eat cat food.” Last year Robson made a splash when he compared councillors to the eliminated penny. “Last Thursday the federal budget was brought in that did not increase my taxes and eliminated the penny,” Robson said at the time. “I’m here today to demand, not ask, for the resignation of four bad pennies we have here on council.” Financial planning this year is expected to open with a debate around the city’s base budget, then move into the capital budget in January and end in February with the formation of service and tax levels.

City council will look into the impacts of shrinking the city. McIvor Lake residents who no longer want to be a part of the City of Campbell River finally got what they were looking for when council, at its regular meeting last week, asked city staff to report back on how such a move would affect the city. The group of eight residents who live along McIvor Lake Road wrote a letter to city council Nov. 7 demanding a response to an Aug. 28 petition for annexing their properties from the city.
After council voted to receive the residents’ letter, Coun. Larry Samson went one step further. “I’ll make a motion to get a report from staff on the implications of the removal of t hese properties from the city boundaries,” said Samson who was quick to add that he also would like the report to include the impact it would have on fire and other city services that the residents receive. The report, which will come before council at a future council meeting, is expected to also include options to address the residents’ concerns, the biggest being the condition
of the road which is paved for the first 500 metres but gravel the rest of the way. Dr. Aref Tabarsi, a McIvor Lake resident who has led the charge for annexation, spoke to council last year about the condition of the road. He said in the winter the potholes are so deep that he’s driving on the opposite side of the road to avoid them and in the summer, so much dust is kicked up that he can’t even go for a walk in his own neighbourhood. Tabarsi maintains it’s wrong of the city to collect property taxes from him and his neighbours when they say they’re not receiving basic city
services. “For the entire six months of a year I’m driving on a public road that’s only been graded once,” Tabarsi said. “It’s unbearable. Collecting our taxes and giving us minimal to no services, including a basic drivable road, is illegal, unethical and immoral.” Tabarsi and his neighbours are pushing for the city to apply to the province under the Local Government Act to downsize the municipality. The McIvor Lake g roup’s intention is to then join the Strathcona Regional District, which has a lower property tax rate.

The city will not cut tree roots that are causing flooding in a building on Shoppers Row. Tricia Murphy and Michael Murphy, who own a building in the 900 block of Shoppers Row, say roots have been growing under the building for a number of years, creating blockages that lead to flooding. “We...ask that the city do something to remove their trees’ roots from under our building before serious damage occurs,” wrote the Murphys in a letter to council. “The current situation is intolerable and completely unfair to us and our very patient tenants.” But the city says it’s not bound to do anything. “It’s the property owner’s responsibility to maintain the build-

had a problem until the existing trees were established. “These trees need to be replaced or measures taken to keep their root system on city property and away from our lines,” wrote the Mur phys. “We would also like to point out that there is potential for actual structural damage from these roots. As we have been paying taxes for 20 years now to the city for this property – last year our tax bill alone was $27,128.77 – we feel that we deserve some attention.” Council, however, reviewed and received the letter at last week’s council meeting but took no further action. Wipper says council could have ordered city staff to cut the roots but that would have been contrary to the practice followed by other municipalities.

B.C. is destined to be an economic leader in Canada and Vancouver Island can be an innovative player in the “new normal,” but we have to address the issue of labour shortages, Bank of Canada senior representative Dr. Farid Novin said Tuesday. Speaking to about 30 members of the Campbell River Chamber of Commerce, Novin said: “Things are not that bad in Canada and in B.C. economic conditions remain slightly better than the Canadian average. This province, particularly the north, is the 21st Century place to be. And, Vancouver Island

Because of that “businesses in B.C. have learned to do it themselves and there is an incredible amount of innovation, good thinking, job training and apprenticeship. It’s a good thing they are standing on their own feet. “It is a part of the investment infrastructure that has a huge payoff,” he added. The Bank of Canada representative noted that the B.C. fundamentals are strong. T h e g ove r n m e n t ’s debt as a percentage of gross domestic product is the third lowest in the country and the province’s employment is now above pre-recession levels. He also said the
rebounding U.S. housing market bodes well for the forest sector on Vancouver Island. He said B.C.’s forest products are high cost, but they are quality products. Mayor Walter Jakeway said Novin gave Campbell River a few good hints about the economic road ahead. “Campbell River is heading into good times with the major projects we have ahead. We have the resources here, like the North Island College and the Vancouver Island University, to train and supply some of that labour Novin talks about. “It means there is going to be a great future for young people and immigrants.”

Low inflation, but ever-increasing taxes Many people wonder why they have such perpetual empty pockets. There is minimal price inflation, interest rates are low, yet at the end of most weeks, there is little left over for extras. There are several possible explanations, and one of them may We say: Tax rate surprise some people. Perhaps the missing link in the puzzle, which isn’t properly
explained, is just how inflation is calculated. According to the Bank of Canada, the official inflation rate is based on a basket of consumer goods. The federal government has been keeping track of prices on that basis since 1914. The first real inflation in Canada took place during the First World War, when prices rose to higher levels because of wartime shortages. Canadians were hit brutally by inflation in the 1970s and 1980s. At one time, interest rates were over 20 per cent — and inflation was close to 14 per cent annually. Those days are long past us now. Inflation has been at low rates for years, and interest rates are much the same. As a result, people have borrowed more money than ever
— much of it to buy homes. Interest costs are thus draining a good portion of peoples’ incomes. But the fact that inflation isn’t being calculated on some of our costs may be an even bigger factor behind our empty pockets. Low official inflation rates mean employers don’t feel the need to give wage increases and governments feel there is plenty of taxing room. Taxes are not considered inflationary. Thus steady jumps in medical service premiums in B.C. are of no consequence. Nor was the HST, which added tax to many items that formerly only had the GST applied. In recent years, the biggest contributors to our empty wallets are governments. But they get away with it, because there’s minimal “inflation.” – Black Press

Teachers care deeply Thanks to Brian Kieran for writing an article about the issues surrounding special needs students. I would like to clarify some points. Readers may have some misconceptions of how teachers feel because of some statements made in the article. First, teachers have never maintained that special needs students do not make positive contributions to their classes. We all know that every child makes important contributions and is a valued member of a class. Most importantly, we have never made the assumption that the special needs students themselves are the “problem.” Teachers care deeply about their special needs students and about all the students in their classes. The problem lies with the government’s removal of massive amounts of funding by removing limits on the number of special needs students in each class. This translates into situations where teachers are not able to meet the needs of those students in particular. In addition, they do not feel they can do a good job of meeting the needs of all students in some classes. We agree with Mr. Longridge that this is an extremely complex issue. Poverty of politics in British Columbia continues

B.C.’s ritual day of shame over child poverty has come and gone once again, with politicians trading blame and time-worn talking points. The occasion was an annual gathering staged at the B.C. Teachers’ Federation office in downtown Vancouver. It is organized by First Call, an umbrella group sponsored by the BCTF, the B.C. Government Employees’ Union and a collection of likeminded “anti-poverty activists,” as they describe themselves in their latest report. The familiar script unfolded. The report misinterprets federal income statistics from two years ago and calls for a long list of uncosted, but hugely expensive measures that they assert will make B.C. the first juris-
diction in human history to eradicate poverty. A sampling: provide raises for employees and contractors at all levels of government until they are making an unspecified “living wage,” because we all know how public sector workers uniquely suffer from pay and pension inequality. Raise the minimum wage again and index it to inflation. Establish universal public dental care, prescription drug and eye care programs, and daycare. (Dismiss targeted programs that already provide this.) Raise welfare rates and expand eligibility for employment insurance. Cut tuition and provide more student grants. Eliminate homelessness. And so it continues toward a social-
ist Utopia and certain bankruptcy for provincial and federal governments already deeply in the red. I wrote about these numbers when Statistics Canada released them back in June. They showed a modest improvement nationally and provincially in what they measure, which is not poverty, but the relative relationship between income groups. First Call dismisses that improvement as “a dismal record.” My point is not to deny that there are many poor people in B.C. and Canada. There are. But at this point we don’t even have a reliable way of measuring the problem, let alone effective solutions. The report states: “Statistics Canada said the child poverty rate in Greater
Vancouver was 18.4 per cent in 2010 …” No, Statistics Canada didn’t say that. They said what they always say, that “Low-Income Cut-Off,” or LICO figures, are not an accurate measure of poverty. The political response was equally predictable. Veteran NDP MP Libby Davies led the charge in Ottawa. The government must establish a national anti-poverty strategy with firm annual goals, she said, reciting the identical script of the B.C. NDP. Davies didn’t mention that Manitoba is among the provinces with such a plan. It’s the only province that finished below B.C. in the percentage of children living in low-income homes. government has indicated it intends to remove all designations in the future. We hope that by making it a political issue in the upcoming election, the public and the politicians will be more aware of the situation, and this will result in some relief for the long suffering students and teachers who have not been adequately supported over the last decade. In our presentation to the School Board and to our DPAC, we made it clear that we do not blame our district administration who are doing the best they can within their budget. But we asked the trustees, senior administrators, and parents to join us in taking every possible opportunity to highlight the issue of adequate funding to allow reasonable limits on special needs students in classes, so that every child will have an opportunity to have their needs met. Can we please have some common sense injected into the new hospital plans before it’s too late? Press headlines ask “Has VIHA underestimated the number of beds needed?” Well it’s not rocket science is it? If residents of Campbell River can see this how is it that those charged with forward planning, that cost $3 million, cannot see it. When I moved here in 2010, one of the reasons I chose Campbell River was the projected new hospital. The fact that it was being built alongside the existing building made me think that the new part would be linked to make one large building. I was totally gobsmacked to find out that was not going to happen, have these people taken leave of their senses? We are an aging population, more

and more retirees are moving to this beautiful area, to spend millions of dollars on a new hospital with so few extra beds is not only crazy but irresponsible. For goodness sake folks, this is your future health care here, make your views known before it’s too late, clearly those in charge of this project don’t have a clue. We must have the standard of health care provision that we, the taxpayers, deserve. Now is the time to get this right we won’t get another chance to be proactive we must insist the present beds in the present hospital be retained or we will all have to live with this monumental cock up for decades to come. erty is a job, she said. This is true, but also obvious. Then Cadieux went on about the “B.C. Jobs Plan,” which has its own sorry record of misrepresented federal statistics. Here’s one of the report’s more blindingly obvious section headings: “Child
poverty concentrated in big cities.” No kidding. The whole population is concentrated in big cities. Herein lies a clue that is missed by “activists” for ever-larger government. Poor people are increasingly crowded into the most expensive places. If I’m on
welfare or working in a low-wage job and receiving a provincial rent subsidy (one of those things LICO d o e s n’ t m e a s u re ) , should I live in downtown Victoria or Vancouver? Shouldn’t I relocate to a smaller c o m m u n i t y wh e re housing is cheaper?

The law in many provinces does not give common-law couples the same rights as married couples. For example, in Alberta, New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, Québec and the Yukon, common-law partners whose relationship breaks down do not have any statutory right to a division of property, no matter how long they have lived together. 4. It was a day Carihi students won’t soon forget. Their vice-principal, Laird Ruehlen, came to school last Friday dressed as a woman, complete with a black dress, blond curly hair and a long, flowing white feather boa. It wasn’t Halloween rather the fallout from being on the losing end of a fundraising campaign to help one of his students. Nick King, who’s fundraising efforts for Variety-The Children’s Charity were profiled in the Mirror in September, challenged his fellow students at Carihi to a coin drive. The result? “Gals challenged the guys, with the losing team seeing a staff member dress up as the opposite sex for a day,” said Juli Winstanley, Skills For Life staff. “ Vi c e - P r i n c i p a l Laird Ruehlen ador ned a dress, stockings, wig, and a boa much to the delight of students and staff.” More importantly, King raised $200

Rod Brind’Amour Arena celebrates 40th anniversary KRISTEN DOUGLAS CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR
Strathcona Gardens staff went back to the 70s last Friday to celebrate a milestone at Rod Brind’Amour Arena. Dressed in period garb, staff mingled with and entertained a modest crowd that turned out to mark the arena’s 40th anniversary. Staff and arena supporters alike reminisced over scrap books, old photo albums, snacks and complimentary root beer floats. A short ice show courtesy of the Campbell River Skating Club wrapped up the afternoon entertainment. Bob and Linda Brind’Amour were on hand to celebrate the arena, named after their son Rod Brind’Amour, the former NHL standout who played for the St. Louis Blues, and Philadelphia Flyers before wrapping up his career with the Carolina Hurricanes with whom he won a Stanley Cup in 2006. Susan Bullock, manager of programs at Strathcona Gardens, emceed the event which saw school groups enjoy free skating and swimming during the day. “It’s hard to believe but the Rod

The 15,000 sq ft store will house a wide selection of major appliances, mattresses, lawn and garden and electronics including Sears exclusive brands Kenmore and Craftsman and has been completely renovated. “We are personally committed to accommodating our customers’ wants and needs and providing them with an enjoyable and satisfying shopping experience,” says Potoski. “Customers will be delighted with the broad range of top-quality products Sears has provided for our refreshed store.” “Norm has been involved as the local Sears hometown dealer owner in Campbell River for close to 6 years. He brought with him a wealth of retail management experience at a couple of other retailers for over 24 years. His store supports a number of charities including the local Kinsman Telethon, Rod Brindamour Cystic Fibrosis Golf Tournament, B.C. Salmon Festival, B.C. Lions society-children with disabilities, as well as the Sears Tree of Wishes program. He also is the treasurer of the local north island Snowmobile Association. While the Hometown Store is locally owned and operated, all merchandise sold is supported by Sears satisfaction guarantee, as well as Sears extensive Parts and Service Division, the largest service network in Canada. In addition, the store features Sears and third party credit card acceptance. hockey and public skating – and the leisure ice were built. At the same time, the front lobby was added on as was the leisure pool, making Strathcona Gardens Recreation Complex what it is today. That project effectively connected the original pool and the already existing Rod Brind’Amour Arena. The compressor room was then rebuilt in 2009. In April 2013 the arena is expected to undergo a
$968,000 major renovation project to replace the brine line system, cement pad and dasherboards. The arena floor and brine lines are currently on the brink of failure and if the concrete slab fails, it will be impossible to keep ice in the rink. Construction is expected to last from April to September of 2013 and the five-month closure is expected to cost the Strathcona Regional District approximately $22,000 in revenue.

Global craft fair supports free trade The holiday season is fast approaching – that time of year when we begin to think about what to buy for those lucky people on our list. Most of us want to purchase items that will be appreciated, are a little bit different and won’t be forgotten when the holiday season is over. Why not consider coming to the Fair Trade Global Craft Fair? This festive event will be held in the Timberline Secondary School gym this Saturday from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Enjoy shopping for unique and beautiful items while supporting fair trade and environmentally sustainable projects around the world. This is the fifth year
the fair has been held at Timberline – the event has been well attended and each year it grows in popularity. Vendors who have attended in past years have been thrilled with the wonderful support they have received for their products and services from the people of Campbell River. This year, more than 20 vendors will be participating. They will be selling products from many different countries. ShantiUganda, a Por t Moody-based organization that supports the well-being of birthing mothers and women living with HIV/AIDS in Uganda, will be selling beaded jewelry and a variety of sewn items including yoga bags.

Christmas show ‘A Clause for Celebration’

he dancing elves at CR DanceXtreme are busy putting the final touches on the studio’s first ever Christmas show, set for Friday, Dec. 14 and Saturday, Dec. 15 at the Tidemark Theatre. “Our exciting Christmas show will have the whole family singing and dancing in their seats as they are entertained through the wonderful art of song and dance,� said CR DanceXtreme coowner Buddy Mynatt. Theatre Quadra will present Sleeping Beauty on stage at the Quadra Island Community Centre Nov. 30, Dec. 1-2. Written by Darcy Mitchell and directed by Candace Holmes with music direction by Linda Cannon, Sleeping Beauty is a rollicking comedy in the British pantomime tradition. Not to be confused with mime, pantomimes feature singing, dancing, high drama, low villains, talking animals and much audience participation. Pantomime plots are based (rather loosely) on a fairy tale or other well-known story, with the hero played by a girl or young woman, and the comic female lead – “the Dame” – by a man. Theatre Quadra’s version of Sleeping Beauty has all of the panto elements, plus a few unusual twists and turns. Performances are Nov. 30 and Dec. 1 (curtain at 7:30 p.m., doors open 7 p.m.) and a Sunday matinee on Dec. 2 (curtain at 2 p.m., doors open 1:30 p.m.). Tickets are $15 advance/$17 at the door for adults and $5/$7 for children under 12, and are available at Hummingbird Office and Art Supply in Quathiaski Cove, Works of H’Art in Heriot Bay, and the Music Plant in Campbell River.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of such a wonderful woman, wife, mother, grandmother, sister and compassionate friend. Phyllis Ambler Campbell of Comox, passed away on November 24, 2012. She was born in Glasgow, Scotland on February 11, 1936. She was married to David Campbell on July 19, 1957. Phyllis is survived by her husband David, children Christine (Chris), Linda (David), and Janice (Bill), grandchildren Nick, Joanna David, Serena, Julina, Jeremy, Marc and P.J., sisters Margaret, Winifred, Dorothy, Grace, Sandra and Jeanette. Phyllis is predeceased by her parents, and her brother, Ian. Phyllis always had a song to sing, that would brighten any day. She will be dearly missed by everyone who’s lives she touched. There will be a service of remembrance on Thursday, November 29, at 1:00pm at Piercy’s Mt. Washington Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donation can be made to the Cancer Society.

Shifts are 3 hours from 9 am to 6 p.m. starting December 1st and go until the truck is full! Volunteers should be able to lift 30 pounds. Canadian Cancer Society: Volunteer in the community office and be the face of the society to the public while doing basic reception duties that include handling correspondence, assisting patrons and distributing brochures. Literacy Association: Be a tutor that works one-onone with youth, adults and seniors to help them achieve their goals of reading, writing, and math. The program runs Mon-Thurs 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Thurs evenings 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. A proficiency in these areas and a commitment of 4 hours per week is requested. A sampler of meditation methods is being offered by the Centre for Spiritual Living, starting on Monday, December 3 at 6 p.m. Unlike “branded” meditation courses, this eight-week course will survey eight different meditation techniques, offering instruction and experience in each one, so participants can choose which ones are most appealing to them personally. Entitled “Medita-
tion is More than You Think,” and facilitated by Spiritual Director Jill Brocklehurst, the course will cover methods based in colour, guided imagery, breathing, movement, writing, chanting, mantra, and Big Mind. The many physiological and mental benefits of meditation have recently been confirmed scientifically, inspiring increased interested in learning to meditate. Results of a regular medita-
tion practise have been shown to include increased awareness and concentration, lowered blood pressure and stress levels, better digestion, and improved memory. Course fee is $200, and financial assistance is available. The course will meet at the Centre for Spiritual Living classroom, #20, 964 Shoppers Row. NWSK captures five Karate B.C. titles N o r t h we s t S h i t o K a i ’s c o m p e t i t ive karate team attended the 21st annual Karate BC (KBC) Provincial Championships held on the BCIT Campus in Burnaby Nov. 17-18. It was the largest KBC provincials in history. And NWSK’s team of 12 had a stellar showing, finishing fourth over all in the province, with a total medal count of five Gold, three Silver and three Bronze. Cohan Caflisch of the 8/9 year old intermediate boys division put on the club’s strongest performance do date at the provincials, coming home with three gold medals and one silver. Caflisch was joined by teammates Kyle Barnes and Alexander Movold in the same division of 15 boys. In the Kata (Forms) event, NWSK claimed three of the top four places with Bar nes ear ning the fourth place bronze, Movold in the third place position and Caflisch coming out on top with the BC title. The three boys then padded up for Kumite (Free Sparring).

Movold was paired with a tough competitor from Maple Ridge in his first match and after a hard fought bout he did not advance to the second round. Barnes and Caflisch on the other hand, fought their way into the final and met each other in the gold medal match. The outcome was a decisive 6-0 victory for Caflsch. Leaving NWSK in the 1 and 2 positions. The three

boys also competed together in the Team Kata (Synchronized Forms) event, where they finished second to a very strong team from Burnaby. Caflisch finished off his day with yet another gold medal performance in the 10 and under Weapons Kata division. Caflisch was joined by teammate Jenna Scott in the group who wound up taking the Silver medal. Scott
also gave a fantastic performance in her respective Kata division earning a silver medal in the girls 8/9 Intermediate group. Liam Gauthier and Daniel Wood are NWSK’s other BC titleholders. Gauthier took first place in the Boys 7 and Under Kata Category and Wood was the champion in the boys 8 & 9 Novice division. “These two young athletes have come out

She earned herself a third place bronze medal in the Girls 16/17 Elite BC Team Division. Since the start of the season Guilderson has put in many hours of hard work, showing up to the club with any free moment she has had. Her determination and leadership has been unmatched in the NWSK dojo as of late. The Campbell River Killer Whales Swim club travelled to Langley to take part in the Invitational swim competition. The meet consisted of teams from throughout the province. The local group of 28 swimmers raced hard, placing sixth overall among 13 teams.The team experienced “team travel” for the first time this season, travelling , eating , and residing as a team. This proved to be a great learning experience and one that the entire team will never forget. In the 10 and under category, Avery Moskal, Gage Windle and Jasmine Skuse all turned in podium performances. Jasmine raced to gold in the 100 Breastroke earning a new meet record along the way. “Her race ranked her No. 2 in Canada, which is an awesome accomplishment,” said coach Dave Healy. In the 11&12 category, qualifying and racing in finals were Cailyn Collis and Megan Wilson. “Cailyn and Megan have been working very hard this season , and their recent success is indicative of their hard work,” said Healy. The group of 13&14 year old swimmers making finals were Jenna Beaudin, MacKenzie Padington, Connor Skuse and James Sidhu. All four swimmers swam at a high level qualifying for finals in what is arguably the toughest age group. Not be outdone were solid finalist performances put in by David Palmer, Connor Milligan, and Maddy Kowalko in the 15 and over category. David was a podium performer and Connor Milligan impressed with his continued improvement. “Our group of older swimmers performed admirably,” said Healy, “we need to build on our successes and keep the momentum going.” Club record swims were put in by Jasmine Skuse in the 100 Breastroke and by Padington in the 200 Breastroke. The competition schedule is very busy for the Killer Whales. Next up is a meet in Comox, followed by a meet hosted here in Campbell River on Dec 2.

For the past 14 years the Campbell River Downtown Business Improvement Area (BIA) has held an event called Starlight Shopping which marks the beginning of the holiday season. This year the event is scheduled for Friday, November 30th when downtown will come alive! Shoppers Row, Tyee Plaza, 11th Avenue and Pier Street businesses will decorate their windows and stores. Most stores are open until 11:00 pm offering special promotions, hot mulled cider, hot chocolate, cookies or appetizers to name a few – a thank you for choosing to shop Downtown. Entertainment in Spirit Square will feature Doug Folkins, Cat & the B-Sides, Shoo Shoo the Clown and the Willow Point “Old School Jugglers”. To keep everybody toasty there will be a fire pit compliments of Spirit Square Manager, Jim Creighton. Pacifica Ukes, Carihi Composition, Salvation Army Brass Band, Job’s Daughters, the Girl Guides and Detailed Face Painting will liven up the Tyee Plaza with music, face painting, taffy pulling, hot chocolate and cookie decorating. Children will enjoy pictures with Santa, free glow sticks, candy canes, reindeer hats and colouring books. The tantalizing aromas of warm mini-donuts, Kettle Korn, salmon barbeque and tacos will fill the air.

There is nothing like watching these rolling works of art, the parade is magical. Again this year, we have over 30 participants taking the time and making the effort to become involved. We have trucks of all description - antique fire trucks, dump trucks, semi trailers, crane trucks, tow trucks, a school bus, cement mixers and trucks towing boats.

Councillor Andy Adams will be front and center as your emcee for the opening ceremonies at 6:00 in Spirit Square. The Pacifica Ukes ukulele ensemble from Campbell River is a unique musical group which has earned a reputation both locally and abroad for their versatility and quality of their musical performances, most recently this past summer on a tour to Kona, Hawaii. The “Pacifica Ukes” are students from the Campbell River school district, ranging from grades 6 to 12. The ensemble is an “honor” group, and students are selected through an audition process based on their musical skills on the ukulele and voice. The group has performed extensively at local schools, at various local public events and venues, and throughout Vancouver and the Lower Mainland. The Senior “A” Ensemble has made its mark in the

The Carihi Composition The Carihi Composition” is an umbrella name for a group made up of students from Carihi Secondary’s Music Composition and Technology course. The course itself offers music students the chance to compose, record and produce their own music using state of the art technology. It is a wonderful chance for young people to engage in a semi-professional manner with the music industry.

Doug Folkins Doug Folkins is a Celtic singer/songwriter and storyteller with a modern twist. He’s perfectly happy to sing for friends at a kitchen party or down at the local pub, but he’s also set his sights on becoming a renowned songwriter crafting hits for other artists. “ C e i l i d h ” (pronounced “Kay-Lee”) is Folkins’ 6th CD. “This disc is a collection of some of my favorite Celtic songs from the East Coast, Ireland and Scotland plus a few of my originals” says Folkins. “We recorded most of the songs in my kitchen on a stormy Sunday afternoon in January” said Doug. Doug says that he is very proud of the CD. “It sounds great with lots of energy without being over produced”. Many local musicians lend their
talents to the project with fiddles, bagpipes, tin whistles, mandolins as well as drums, bass, guitars and vocals. Folkins has spent the last 13 years, writing, playing and producing his own material. Doug is able to blend traditional Celtic influences, Country twang and Pop Jangle to create a fresh sound that is as comfortable as your favorite pair of jeans. He is a serious musician who takes time to whittle down each song to the most essential elements necessary to make melodic and emotional connections between his songs and the listeners. With a second summer of festival performances under their belt, Fiftieth Parallel have again hit the studio – you can expect a variety of new music to be available for the holiday season.
