Increasing demand for services is putting pressure on two local charities as they begin their Christmas fundraising campaigns. Both the Salvation Army and the Abbotsford Food Bank and Christmas Bureau are seeing more people come through their doors this year than in 2011, although it’s difficult to pinpoint exactly why. Deb Lowell of the Salvation Army speculates that the spin-off effects from the 2008 economic downturn are still impacting people, with many suffering job loss or under-employment. She said the number of people served by the agency each month is now up to about 4,000, although the total referred to detox or substance abuse treatment has gone down. “It would indicate the main reason people are coming through our doors is poverty,” Lowell said. An estimated crowd of between 4,000 and 5,000 people attended the 23rd annual tree lighting celebration on Sunday and organizers say it is one of the biggest turn-outs in recent years. seemed happy.” While attendance at the event is always a “guess-timate,” Stewart said it continues to grow. “We had about 4,000 people last year and I’d say there were more than last year, it was definite-

ly shoulder to shoulder.” The increased crowds could be due in part to a change made three years ago. The tree lighting had historically been held on a Friday evening. However, in 2009, the decision was made to host

they’re beautiful and we really love that,” said Stewart. Other highlights included the kids’ free craft tent which Stewart said was a “big hit” and will return again next year. She also noted that the crowd cheered when Abbotsford Mayor Bruce Banman took to the stage to perform the Grinch song. “It’s free fun for the family – that’s what we really like about our event.” Among the activities was a fundraising event called a puzzle walk. For a small donation, participants could collect puzzle pieces from participating merchants for a chance to win a gift basket. The walk raised $400 for Matthew’s House, a respite facility for children with severe disabilities. It is currently under construction as part of the Campus of Care, located next to Abbotsford Regional Hospital. The Christmas tree is at the corner of Essendene Avenue and Railway Street.

School suspensions drop Down 30 per cent since 2008

The number of school suspensions has dropped in Abbotsford, according to the latest numbers released by the school district. Last year, there were 727 out-of-school suspensions, compared to 805 the previous year. In-school suspensions dropped to 526 in 2011, compared to 683 in 2010. Total suspensions have dropped about 30 per cent since 2008 and are highest at the Grade 9 and 10 levels. Drugs are the most common reason, and boys account for about 80 per cent of suspensions.

Assistant superintendent Steve Carlton said the drop in the numbers can be partly attributed to a “system-wide response to children in need of behaviour support.” These school initiatives include the alternative suspension program, police liaison officers in the schools, and “positive behaviour” supports such as Lions Quest, Character Counts, and Roots of Empathy. Community programs include Impact’s New Directions and the South Asian Community Resource Office.

B.C.’s toughened roadside penalties on drinking drivers are being credited for cutting alcoholrelated crash deaths for a second straight year. The province estimates 104 lives have been saved since the immediate roadside prohibition (IRP) system took effect in September 2010. That’s based on a drop from an average of 114 impaired fatalities prior to the new rules to 66 in the first full year of the IRP program and 58 in the second year. Provincial government officials say the initiative has drastically changed British Columbians’ attitudes to drinking and getting behind the wheel. “As you drive home late at night, the car coming toward you is far less likely to

be piloted by an impaired driver than at any time in recent years,” Justice Minister Shirley Bond said. She said B.C. is so far averaging a 46 per cent drop in drunk driving fatalities – better than a target of 35 per cent set in 2010 in honour of impaired

driving victim Alexa Middelaer. The roadside penalties can result in licence suspensions, vehicle impoundments and can cost drivers $600 to $4,000 in administrative penalties and remedial program costs. The new approach has also meant a

major shift away from criminal prosecution of suspected impaired drivers, which consumes much police investigation and court time. A June survey of drivers in five communities (Vancouver, A b b o t s f o r d , Kelowna, Prince George and Saanich)

found the lowest levels of drinking and driving ever recorded in a series of similar surveys dating back to 1995. Nearly 60 per cent fewer drivers who agreed to be tested for the survey were at or over the 0.08 criminal blood-alcohol level than in past years, and there was a 44 per cent drop in those who tested in the warn range above 0.05. Drivers aged 25 to 54 were most likely to say their behaviour has changed due to the new sanctions and those under 25 were most likely to say they never drink and drive. The tests found no drivers aged 16 to 18 who had been drinking, which is thought to be a benefit of B.C.’s graduated licensing system that restricts novice and learners to a zero blood alcohol content.

A pageant for Lilee

A kids’ charity pageant raised more than $2,800 on Saturday in Abbotsford for a girl battling brain cancer. The Love for Lilee Charity Pageant, held at Garden Park Tower, was organized by Maureen Keyes, owner of Xtreme Talent Fine Arts School. Keyes said she wanted to do something to help Lilee-Jean Putt, almost two, who is battling an aggressive brain cancer. Keyes had never met the family. “It (the story) just really touched me. I have a little girl who’s two,” she said. A total of 25 participants up to age 16 competed in the Disney-themed pageant, which included a visit from “Belle” of Beauty and the Beast fame. Lilee herself was crowned “Survivor Princess Diva.” The People’s Choice Award for raising the most funds went to Brianna Prasad, who collected $1,100 from bottle drives, selling her pageant attire, and other initiatives.

Shara and Sean McKinney had both been involved in sports as teens, and they wanted their kids to experience the same benefits of teamwork and camaraderie that they had. Abbotsford WORKS celebrates opening Abbotsford WORKS, the new B.C. employment program, celebrated its official opening on Friday. The organization provides services to assist unemployed individuals to return to work in the shortest time possible, including self-serve employment resources, information on job opportunities, career exploration and job search tools workshops, training services, self employment referrals and ongoing follow up. These services are provided through five different locations in Abbotsford with the main office at #103 – 33255 South Fraser Way. ACS receives interfaith grant Abbotsford Community Services (ACS) is among 15 organizations across Canada receiving a total of $250,000 in funding from the Inspirit Foundation. The Inspirit Bridge Building Grants support community projects that give young people the opportunity to engage with peers of different beliefs, change misconceptions about each other that may exist, and discover shared goals and aspirations. ACS will use its grant for the Youth Adult Interfaith Project that will take young people on tours of places of worship throughout their community. A quick look outside will tell you we’re tightly in the grip of a West Coast fall. That means rain. Lots of it. And darkness – late into the morning and earlier in the afternoon. It’s a dangerous time of year. For motorists, and especially for pedestrians. Statistics from ICBC show almost a third of pedestrian collisions involving injuries or fatalities occur in November, December and January. A little common sense would go a long way to reducing those numbers. Like wearing bright clothing, ideally with a reflective strip or two, so motorists can distinguish you through the gloom. Cross streets using marked, and preferably lit, crosswalks. Motorists peering into the darkness through rain-slicked windshields are already coping with a lot – faded and swamped lane markings, the glare from oncoming headlights. The last

thing they’re ready for is a dark figure bolting from the shadows across their path. When walking along the shoulder, where there are no sidewalks, face oncoming traffic. Drivers can also do their part to improve safety during these dark, rainy months. Ensure your windshield wipers are doing their job. Check that all the lights on your vehicle are working, and that the headlights are aimed properly so they don’t blind oncoming cars or pedestrians. When driving in difficult conditions, use the low beams, as the high beams will just reflect the rain or fog, actually making it harder to see. Check your tire tread. Worn tires will take longer to stop, and are more likely to hydroplane. Most importantly, slow down and drive according to the conditions. – The Burnaby News Leader

Other Hand “What are you doing?” I asked a family member busy on the couch with his iPad. “I take the Canadian citizenship test in two weeks, and I’m preparing by doing a simulated test” was the response. A couple of minutes later there was a loud Akkkkkkkk! “I failed, I only got 11 questions correct out of 20.” Better let me try that, I offered. His chagrined reply: “No way, because you’ll probably pass with flying colours and then gloat all afternoon about your superior knowledge.” I whined, he relented, and I took the test. With only 12 of the 20 correct, I failed too. Crushed, and expecting if this became public knowledge, my citizenship might be revoked, I wondered

how many other Canadians could actually achieve the required 75 per cent passing grade, given the obscure questions asked on the examination before citizenship is granted. And if you don’t believe me in regard to the obscurity of things listed in the test, try it yourself. A sample (and “free” it is noted on the site) simulation test is available at citizenshipsupport.ca under the Training Program button. To make it “easier,” the questions come with multiple-choice answers. All you have to do is pick one, but easy it ain’t. For example, how about Question 4: “Who is Marjorie Turner-Bailey?” The answer choices are (1) An Olympian and descendant of black Loyalists (2) A famous Canadian settler (3) The first woman to become Prime Minister (4) The first Canadian female athlete. It’s been a rather long time since I’ve read school textbooks relating to history, though I’d guess that many of the questions immigrants are expected to answer won’t be found in them. Combine this with having to memorize all this information from an

English-as-Second-Language (or third for matter) perspective, and it is tough to pass the Canadian competency test. There is a book issued to those seeking citizenship which should have all the answers to expected questions, but I wonder how many people, once they have been granted their Canadian enfranchisement, remember any of it. It’s difficult learning to speak English (along with learning a modicum of our own ‘second language’) without being required to know who represents the Queen in Nunavut. And apparently, even though you can mess up that question, if you get even one wrong about how our voting system works, your application for citizenship goes back to square one. So how many of you can answer correctly, and exactly, “Who has the right to vote in a federal election?” or exactly what you do with your ballot (despite having done it a great many times) at the polling station? Guess it’s time to drop Monty Python’s song “I’m a lumberjack and I’m OK”, and check out the library’s Canadian history department. markrushton@abbynews.com

Religious discrimination I have read the reports concerning the distribution of New Testaments and/or Bibles by the Gideons and must state I am very disturbed by the bias shown by some in the public education system. From my understanding, parental permission is obtained prior to any New Testament or Bible being given to any student. That condition is totally and completely reasonable. When I attended public school we had daily Bible readings and prayer and that was based on the belief that Canada was a Christian country. Subsequently, the decision was made that public schools are to be secular – i.e. nonreligious. Despite this movement, we are allowing religious festivals from other faiths in the school. One such example is the Diwali Festival, otherwise known as the Festival of Lights, which is a festival for the Sikhs and Hindus. This festival is a religious festival and is being allowed in our public education system. As a citizen of this country, I see no justifiable reason for banning the distribution of Christian literature such as New Testaments and/or Bibles as is currently permitted within our school system. Such action does not in any way discriminate against other religious faiths, as all should be given the same rights if and when other faiths wish to follow in the steps of the Gideons. Allowing religious festivals such as quoted above is definite discrimination against Christianity. In fact, some schools will not allow the reference to Christmas but rather

insist on calling that season the holiday season. This is despite the fact that virtually every member of the public knows this to be a celebration of the birth of Christ. Students or parents are not obligated in any way to accept the offer of the Gideons. Yet currently, at least within the Abbotsford School District, students are forced to at least notice that festivals of other religious faiths such as the Diwali festival are within their school. If Christian festivals are not permitted, the minister of education should ensure that school boards do not permit religious festivals of other religions.

The event was part of the child poverty initiative that all BC CFUW Clubs are participating in this year. Grinch comes to Abby Children’s Theatre production

What does time and the world do to someone whose heart grew three sizes in one day? Abbotsford Children’s Theatre (ACT) examines this question in “The Grinch Project,” a play that was first produced in 2004 and has been reworked for this year’s Christmas production. Stage manager and 15-yearold Catherine Churchill said, “Our Grinch story is really about what our society has become at Christmas – too commercialized. “The Grinch was originally a bad guy who tried to steal Christmas. In our play he is really the good guy, trying to get the Hoos back to a simpler time when Christmas meant stringing popcorn around a tree, a few gifts underneath it, and a hot mug of cocoa with family.” Abbotsford Children’s Theatre is made up of a group of nineto 16-year-olds from various schools across Abbotsford who have auditioned for a chance to work with founder and artistic director Freddy Latham.

“I believe 110 per cent in the kids,” Latham said. “Theatre is about being encouraged to achieve your personal best. “A talented group of actorsturned-playwrights collaborated about the storyline and characters and how to bring them to life in a creative way. They are proud of their efforts and so am I.” This season, Latham is joined for the first time by her daughter, Megan, an international opera singer who is the musical director. Tickets are now on sale for shows on Dec. 7 at 7 p.m. and Dec. 8 at 1 p.m. at Matsqui Centennial Auditorium, 32325 South Fraser Way (in city hall). Two-thirds of B.C. residents have crossed the U.S. border to shop in the past year and 45 per cent have done so within the past three months, according to a new poll. Ipsos Reid conducted the online survey of nearly 2,500 B.C. residents in October. MCC aids families in Gaza City

Mennonite Central Committee (MCC), based in Abbotsford, is sending emergency funds to help families whose homes were bombed during recent fighting between Israel and Hamas. A ceasefire was announced on Nov. 21, but many families were impacted by the fighting. Conflict between Israel and Hamas in the Israeli-occupied Gaza Strip resulted in Hamas firing rockets into Israel, and Israel conducting an intensive attack from air and sea. More than 150 people were killed, many of them children. Gazans have very limited space to move out of harm’s way and there were no safe shelters in which to take refuge. There are restrictions to the flow of goods and people

Drivers will be getting extra reminders about yielding to pedestrians, through a new pilot project by the City of Abbotsford. The City’s Traffic Safety Advisory Committee (TSAC) approved the idea to paint advance yield lines and install corresponding signage at the crosswalk on South Fraser Way at James Street, in front of city hall. Advance yield lines are rows of white triangles painted onto the street surface. Signage will instruct motorists to “Yield Here to Pedestrians.” Drivers who stop too close to a crosswalk can obscure the view of other motorists traveling in adjacent lanes and could result in a pedestrian being struck. The signage and pavement markings tell motorists to yield at least 10 metres from the crosswalk. It is designed to improve safety by increasing the sight distance between the pedestrian and the motorist approaching in the adjacent lane. It also reduces the potential of a vehicle rear-ending the yielding vehicle and pushing it into a pedestrian. “This is the only one we’ve tried here so far,” said Abbotsford Coun. Moe Gill, chair of the TSAC. He said other areas were examined for the new signage, but it was decided to wait and monitor the one site to determine if the project is a success. “We’re still doing a little bit of an experiment on it,” added Gill, saying the distances may be increased or decreased depending on the effectiveness. The signs could also be hung above the road rather than at street level. Gill said a more thorough examination of cost would have to be completed before any additional crosswalks would be changed. NHL hockey legends will play for charity Former players take on Canadian military in fundraiser at AESC

The Heroes of Hockey Challenge is coming to Abbotsford on April 7 for a charity game between the Hockey Legends (former NHL players) and the Heroes Hockey Challenge Warriors (some of the best Western Canadian military hockey players). “Many of our military heroes grew up playing hockey all across Canada with some playing at major junior hockey levels,” said Captain Dan Spielman, who is team captain of HHC Warriors. Former NHL hockey greats who have played with the Hockey Legends include Dave Babych, Gino Odjick, Dave “Tiger” Williams, Larry Melnyk and others. “We’re expecting an exciting hockey game with these warriors,” said Babych, a former Vancouver Canuck player. The game is designed to be a fun outing for families with a chance to see hockey legends in action. The game will also feature a ceremony to honour the nation’s fallen soldiers, as well as entertainment, a military band and displays, hockey souvenirs and memorabilia, and a chance to collect autographs. In conjunction with the game, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry Foundation and its Heroes Hockey Challenge partners will conduct a gala dinner at Phoenix Lounge in Abbotsford on Saturday, April 6. Proceeds from ticket sales and the dinner will go towards the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry Foundation, a charitable organization which provides needed funds for the benefit of the families of the fallen; wounded soldiers, their families; and the veterans and their families. Brust is shutout king Heat goalie surpasses Johnny Bower with scoreless streak of 268:17

It seems appropriate that if one of Johnny Bower’s many entries in the AHL record book must be erased, Barry Brust would be the goalie to do it. The Abbotsford Heat netminder is a stylistic heir to Bower, the Hockey Hall of Famer who spent 11 seasons in the AHL before making it big in the NHL with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Bower was revered for pioneering the poke check, and that type of old-school aggression defines Brust’s game. In the Heat’s 3-2 shootout win over the San Antonio Rampage on Saturday evening, during which Brust eclipsed Bower’s AHL record for BRUST longest shutout streak, he even busted out the poke check on a couple occasions. “Growing up, my dad used to tell me about Johnny Bower,” marveled Brust, who also learned about the Leafs icon via the Legends of Hockey TV series. “It’s pretty special (to break the record).” Bower established the AHL shutout mark in 1957 with the Cleveland Barons, keeping his net puck-free for a remarkable 249 minutes, 51 seconds. The record survived almost 55 years to the day. Brust, riding a streak of three straight shutouts and having allowed just one goal in four

On Friday, Chris Breen’s overtime goal and Danny Taylor’s 19 saves boosted Abby to a 1-0 win over the Texas Stars. The prevailing school of thought around the Mennonite Educational Institute volleyball program is that this year's junior boys team might be the most talented group ever to wear the blue and white of the Eagles. That's some awfully high praise. The MEI boys volleyball dynasty has, after all, produced eight senior AA provincial titles in the past 10 years. But the current crop of Grade 9-10 athletes actually managed to exceed the hype on the weekend, mowing down the competition at the B.C. junior championships. The host Eagles didn't lose a single set all tournament, and capped things off with a 25-15, 25-20, 29-27 triumph over the Kelowna Owls in the gold medal game. "I've been with the program for eight years, and this is the most talented team I've seen," marveled coach Brad Knodel, whose squad lost just one set all season. In September 2011, Mouat beat Mount Doug 53-47 in a memorable regular-season tilt, but the Rams got revenge in the Subway Bowl by rallying for a 42-35 win. The Hawks edged the Rams 52-49 on Oct. 13, but just like last year, Mount Doug got the win when it really mattered.

William passed away peacefully on November 20, 2012. He was predeceased by his son, Kenneth in 2012 and leaves behind his loving wife, Margaret; daughter-inlaw, Marline; grandson, Lee and his wife, Jennifer; and granddaughter, Shannon. He will also be missed greatly by his five great - grandchildren, Joey, Ellie, Lauren, Kaitlyn and Jaxon. “Bill” was well known in Abbotsford as a Buckerfield’s employee for 40 years, the last 20 years as the manager. He will be fondly remembered by many relatives and good friends, especially at Carriage Lane where he and Margaret lived for the past 22 years. The family wishes to thank Dr. G.
