Major gym repairs almost complete Fruitvale Elementary School gymnasium expected to be ready in time for the holiday season BY SHERI REGNIER Times Staff
The students of Fruitvale Elementary School are getting an early Christmas treat. Just in time for the holidays, the students will be singing “We Wish You A Merry Christmas” in the warmth of a renovated and repaired gym, after being displaced from the structure since the beginning of the school year. What began with principal Brian Stefani noticing a few loose ceiling tiles in June, ended with a major repair, to be completed in early December and a rather large bill to School District 20 (SD20). Kootenay South Métis Society gathered for Louis Riel Day at the Trail United Church on Saturday for a dinner to honour his memory and contributions to the Metis community. The evening opened in prayer by Marilyn Taylor, Métis Kootenay regional director. Almost 100 families and friends of the organization enjoyed turkey with all the fixings. Entertainment was led (from the left) by Donna Wright, Cylis Boutilier, 11, Shayla Workman, 10, and Ann-Marie Smith dancing the Métis jig and performing traditional heartbeat drumming songs.
An extra daily flight to Trail from Vancouver should net the city’s lone air passenger carrier a 35 per cent increase in air traffic volume this year, says the company’s vice president of commercial services. Spencer Smith said Pacific Coastal had targeted a 38 per cent increase in air traffic out of Trail when they elected to add a third daily flight to the Lower Mainland last spring. But it is likely the company will realize a slightly lower increase at 35 per cent — or around 7,000 passengers per year — when it is all said and done, he said. The airline added the evening trip to and from Vancouver Sunday through Friday, something that had never been tried in the Silver City. “We felt it was a good scheduling and timing for flights, but we really had no way to know for sure to know if the region would welcome a flight at that time of the day,” said Smith. “And they did. We had real good regional support for that time.” See EXTRA, Page 3

New trusses added to gym FROM PAGE 1 “The issue, initially, was some ceiling tiles coming loose,” said Steve Morissette, director of operations for SD20. “Once we went into the ceiling space and saw signs of damage, we had to bring in an engineer, who discovered that a ceiling truss was showing signs of failure.” An engineer was appointed to draw up a repair plan. “It was determined that the cheapest and cleanest fix would be to add steel beams above the ceiling trusses, to add support,” explained Morissette. The next step was to put the plans to tender. “Until we received the bids from multiple tenders, we did not know what the cost would be.” In total, the school district has to pony up $295,000 for the repairs, which include repainting walls and
resurfacing the gym floors. “Only a minimal portion will be paid by insurance, because we are strengthening the trusses and insurance will only pay for a truss to be restored,” commented Morissette. “This has proven to be a lengthy and complicated process with much communication between the engineers, our Director of Operations and the insurer,” said Natalie Verigin, secretarytreasurer of SD20. “We are also in the process of requesting approval from the Minister of Education on the release of the balance of our ‘restricted’ capital reserves for the balance of the costs for the repair,” she explained. Stefani said the reinforced trusses were installed over a November weekend when no students or staff was at the school. “Student and staff safety were paramount

Next round of ‘Ski Town Throwdown’ By Jim Bailey
Times Sports Editor
The Rossland-Nelson joint venture into Powder Magazine’s Ski Town Throwdown is headed for Round 2 and looking to advance as they go up against Whitefish, Mont. Wednesday and Thursday. Vote for Rossland-Nelson in the Ski Town Throwdown at facebook.com/powdermag. Find the competition by clicking on the “RosslandNelson vs Whitefish” link in the page banner on voting days. Rossland-Nelson surpassed Maine’s Sugarloaf Ski Hill 1,309 to 1,028 earlier this month, while Whitefish is coming off a stunning upset over Whistler in the open-
ing round of voting, beating the high-end ski resort 1,730 votes to 1,005. The online contest began with 32 ski towns in the running for the Best Ski Town in North America, and is now down to 16. With the elimination of Whistler, RosslandNelson is one of three B.C. towns remaining in the competition with Revelstoke facing the Salt Lake City district and Fernie up against the combined efforts of Mad River Glen and Sugarbush in Vermont. “I think we’ve rallied some incredible community support ranging between Rossland and Nelson, so we’re all on the same page working together to make a go of this,” said Red Mountain’s
Eric Kalacis. Rossland-Nelson is Powder Magazine’s number one seed in it’s bracket, but it will face a tough test against the similarly laid-back, yet ardent ski culture in Whitefish. “They’re going to be tough contenders, because they’ve got a lot of fans, but they are up against some stiff competition and they’re also going to be up against thousands of dedicated fans. It’s all about rallying them and getting them to vote.” As an extra incentive to vote, Red Mountain and Whitewater are each giving away a pair of day passes to a lucky voter. side,” said Stefani. “We have tennis courts, a hockey field, a bowling
alley close by – a lot of activities to keep the kids active.
Extra flight ended at time change FROM PAGE 1 Smith also pointed to the longevity of the carrier in the market, earning the confidence of people that they are here to stay. As well, he said the reports of a greater success rate in getting into the West Kootenay than Castlegar’s Air Canada flight service has helped boost traffic. “I suspect that probably plays a role, certainly at this time of the year,” he said. The Waneta Dam expansion project, as well as some commercial development in the area has benefitted the airline. However, the company put on too much extra capacity with the addition of the flight and the subsequent growth in traffic didn’t match, he added. The company was using a 30-seat Saab 340A and should have instead employed a 19-seat Beechcraft 1900C. The new spring/summer sched-

ule was designed to provide Greater Trail residents more travel options and greater convenience, offering the latest departure time (just after 8 p.m.) from Trail by any airline in the region. As of Nov. 5 that extended schedule has ended due to shorter daylight hours. The airline can no longer operate late due to dark conditions, said Smith. Pacific Coastal has now reverted back to two flights per day and uses its 30-passenger aircraft for both flights rather than its 19-seater to meet anticipated demand. The third flight will resume in late February, Smith said. The Richmond-based company opened its operation in Trail on April 10, 2006, offering a single flight from Vancouver seven days a week. Strong local support and growing passenger numbers led to the addition of a second weekday flight about six months later.

PROVINCIAL PORT ALBERNI
Wild dogs blamed for dead goats BY WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON Alberni Valley News
Port Alberni RCMP and animal authorities are on the lookout for a pack of wild dogs that slaughtered a herd of goats in Beaver Creek on the weekend. The incident happened on Friday on Alberni Valley resident Robert Tolfo’s property near McLean Mill. Tolfo let his six goats out of their pen to graze that morning. When he returned at 7 p.m. the goats weren’t waiting for him at the pen like they normally do. He went to a secondary barn where the goats mingle and found one of them being mauled by a black Rottweiler. He caught a fleeting glimpse of two other brown dogs of undetermined breeds running away. “The Rottweiler was on top of the goat and had it jaws
clamped around its throat. There was no sign of the other goats,” Tolfo said. Unarmed, Tolfo could only stand and watch. He tried to scare the dog only to be growled at before it ran away. Tolfo called his wife using his cellphone and told her to bring his rifle. He then called police. When his wife arrived, he shot the goat at the barn to put it out of its suffering, he said. Police arrived 15 minutes later and they notified conservation authorities, Tolfo said. The group scoured the property but found no sign of the dogs. They did however find four dead goats. And Tolfo found the sixth goat carcass the next morning. “They all had their throats ripped out. There were no other markings on them and they weren’t eaten. The dogs weren’t
hungry — they were just out to kill,” Tolfo said. Tolfo managed to snap a picture of one of the dogs – a black Rottweiler with a chain around its neck, likely denoting an owner, he said. And the other two dogs are described as being mixed breeds that were brown in colour. Tolfo feeds his goats and tends to his other animals every day and said he had never seen the dogs before. “I talked to my neighbours and they don’t recall seeing them either,” he said. “The dogs are either a wandering pack, or they’re a pack that’s extending its territory.” Tolfo hopes the pack will be found before they do any other damage. “There’s other people around here who have livestock. These things have killed before and they’ll kill again,” he said.
VERNON
Volunteer firefighters threaten to quit THE VERNON MORNING STAR Okanagan Landing’s fire hall could become an empty place. Twenty of 26 volunteer firefighters have indicated they will quit as of Jan. 31 if the City of Vernon does not agreed to renew a service contract with the Okanagan Landing Volunteer Firefighters Association. “Should the association’s concerns be heard and a mutual agreeable contract be drawn up, many of the valuable volun-
teers that serve today will continue to serve for many years to come,” said Todd Montgomery, OKLVFA president. The city decided earlier this year not to renew a contract with the association. Instead, Landing volunteers have been invited to join the Vernon Volunteer Firefighters Association and to become part of a single command model based out of the Vernon hall. The association had requested to appear at city
council’s Nov. 26 open meeting but it says Mayor Rob Sawatzky declined because of legal and labour matters. “The mayor also declined a request from a member of the Landing community to present a petition with 1,670 signatures,” said Montgomery, adding that the petition called for the contract to be renewed. The OKLVFA has now asked to meet with council at a closed-door meeting to discuss the issue.

Cops collar robbers
ARROW LAKES NEWS Police are awaiting more information before releasing more information on a robbery in Silverton on Sunday morning. According to a police report, two men with guns strode into a Red Mountain Road home in Silverton and were confronted by the two residents, which resulted in one of the resident’s being stabbed as well as one of the interlopers. The suspects then fled and the residents called the police, giving them a description of the get away vehicle. Around 2:30 p.m., Midway and South Okanaga RCMP stopped the suspect vehicle and four males were taken into custody. When their vehicle was searched, a handgun and a pellet gun were found.

Carney bails Mayor defiant in face of court-ordered ouster BANK OF CANADA
THE CANADIAN PRESS TORONTO _ A subdued but still defiant Mayor Rob Ford blamed a left-wing conspiracy for his court-ordered ouster Monday, pledging to fight “tooth and nail’’ against a possibly unprecedented ruling that booted him from office for violating conflict of interest rules. In fact, the Toronto mayor said, if he loses in the courts, he would go straight to the court of public opinion. “I’m a fighter. If there’s a byelection, my name will be the first one on the ballot,’’ Ford told a crush of journalists shortly after the judicial ruling. “This comes down to left-wing politics. The left wing wants me out of here, and they’ll do anything in their power to (do that).’’ The legal action was launched by businessman Paul Magder, who argued the largerthan-life mayor violated the rules when he TORONTO took part in a council vote over repayment of $3,150 in donations TORONTO _ The breach of trust, con- he had solicited for his former executive direc- spiracy to commit an private football fountor of a Salvation Army indictable offence and facility was charged several counts relating Monday, following the to trafficking in stolen discovery of a massive goods. THE CANADIAN PRESS OTTAWA - Mark Carney is leaving the Bank of Canada for one of the world’s most storied financial posts - taking charge of the Bank of England at a critical time in its 318-year history, and during uncertain times in Canada. The announcement shocked observers on both sides of the pond, particularly as Carney previously dismissed reports he was being courted, as he also played down rumours about joining the International Monetary Fund and the Liberal Party. But the Bank of England rumours turned out to have substance, despite his earlier categorical denials. On Monday, he hedged that all his discussions had been “off process,’’ and that he had not applied as “part of the formal process.’’ The discussions intensified in the last two weeks, he added, and “changed my view.’’ Still, British media were caught as unaware as those in Canada. “Stunned City welcomes new Bank chief,’’ the Times of London blared. Carney insisted he was not leaving Canada in the lurch for the big job - at a time when the economy remains stuck in the slow lane and household debt is at record levels, in part due to his low-interest rate policies. “We have a system that works very well. It’s been tested under the biggest economic and financial shock we’ll ever see in our lifetime and it has passed that test,’’ he told reporters. “I’m going to where the challenges are greatest because I’m confident that the strengths are as deep and as broad as they are here in Canada. I could not do it any other way.’’

In a damning 24-page decision, Superior Court Justice Charles Hackland slammed Ford for ``wilful blindness’’ that could not be excused as a simple slip-up, especially from someone in his leadership role. “It is difficult to accept an error-injudgment defence based essentially on a stubborn sense of entitlement and a dismissive and confrontational attitude to the integrity commissioner and the ‘code of conduct’,’’ Hackland said in his ruling. “I declare the seat of the respondent Robert Ford on Toronto city council vacant.’’ Hackland could have barred Ford from running again for seven years, but instead opted to disqualify him for the “current term.’’ It was not immediately clear whether that meant Ford’s term ended with his ouster, meaning he would be free to run in a possible byelection, although Ruby was adamant the judge had precluded

The politics around poverty continues

Government Employees’ Union and a collection of like-minded “anti-poverty activists,” as they describe themselves in their latest report. The familiar script unfolded. The report misinterprets federal income statistics from two years ago and calls for a long list of uncosted, but hugely expensive measures that they assert will make B.C. the first jurisdiction in human history to eradicate poverty. A sampling: provide raises for employees and contractors at all levels of government until they
are making an unspecified “living wage,” because we all know how public sector workers uniquely suffer from pay and pension inequality. Raise the minimum wage again and index it to inflation. Establish universal public dental care, prescription drug and eye care programs, and daycare. (Dismiss targeted programs that already provide this.) Raise welfare rates and expand eligibility for employment insurance. Cut tuition and provide more student grants. Eliminate homelessness. And so it continues toward a socialist Utopia and certain bankruptcy for provincial and federal governments already deeply in the red. I wrote about these numbers when Statistics Canada released them back in June. They showed a modest improvement nationally and provincially in what they measure, which is not poverty, but the relative relationship
TOM
FLETCHER B.C. Views
between income groups. First Call dismisses that improvement as “a dismal record.” My point is not to deny that there are many poor people in B.C. and Canada. There are. But at this point we don’t even have a reliable way of measuring the problem, let alone effective solutions. The report states: “Statistics Canada said the child poverty rate in Greater Vancouver was 18.4 per cent in 2010 …” No, Statistics Canada didn’t say that. They said what they always say, that “Low-Income Cut-Off,”
or LICO figures, are not an accurate measure of poverty. The political response was equally predictable. Veteran NDP MP Libby Davies led the charge in Ottawa. The government must establish a national anti-poverty strategy with firm annual goals, she said, reciting the identical script of the B.C. NDP. Davies didn’t mention that Manitoba is among the provinces with such a plan. It’s the only province that finished below B.C. in the percentage of children living in low-income homes. These plans are mainly gesture politics, providing the appearance of action. Social Development Minister Stephanie Cadieux spoke on behalf of the B.C. Liberal government, and she, too, stuck to a familiar script. The best path out of poverty is a job, she said. This is true, but also obvious. Then Cadieux went on about the “B.C. Jobs Plan,” which has its own
sorry record of misrepresented federal statistics. Here’s one of the report’s more blindingly obvious section headings: “Child poverty concentrated in big cities.” No kidding. The whole population is concentrated in big cities. Herein lies a clue that is missed by “activists” for ever-larger government. Poor people are increasingly crowded into the most expensive places. If I’m on welfare or working in a low-wage job and receiving a provincial rent subsidy (one of those things LICO doesn’t measure), should I live in downtown Victoria or Vancouver? Shouldn’t I relocate to a smaller community where housing is cheaper? There are lots of complications to this, but some kind of incentive to relocate could help big and small communities. Style trumps substance too often
All the talk about the upcoming provincial elections made me think of a small notice on one of the back pages of the Vancouver Sun, now some 23 years ago. The reason I remember is the impression it made on me; the reason it caught my attention was the name of the late Tommy Douglas. It was a brief statement of his total estate value, amounting to less than a hundred thousand dollars and that included his old Chevy Biscayne. Obviously the editor of the Sun at that time missed a golden opportunity for a unique head line on the front page, something like “An Honest Political Leader?” The poor chap probably never drank a sixteen dollar glass of orange juice in his life. And not for him an air force helicopter ride to some distant fishing camp. When he went fishing it was in his old Chevy to the nearest pond. No friends such as the likes of a Karlheinz Schreiber, and I don’t recall him ever selling a railroad. But most significantly, he was never invited to join the board of directorsof one of the major banks.
So why is it that we’ve turned our backs on political leaders of his calibre? Or have we? Is it possible that in the years since, we’ve been sold a bill of goods called “Bread and Circuses,” a tactic that today is even more successful than in the Roman Empire where it was first used. The “bread,” in our case today being the relative comfort many of us still enjoy. And as for the “circuses,” well, take your pick: Hollywood, reality shows, royalty, both weddings and scandals, the Canucks – for some the Boston Bruins – traitors! – and not to forget, elections, to name just a few. All super efficiently delivered, not just to your doorstep, no, right into your living room via that ultimate tool of manipulation, the TV. With the remote, no physical effort required, nor mental I might add. So is it surprising that we’ve become a celebrity culture where appearance and charm are more important than substance? When in October Justin Trudeau appeared on Global News for a couple of days in succession, the poll ratings for the Ontario Liberal Party made a dramatic recovery. And even more remark-
able, when some time ago Canadians were asked whom they considered the most influential Canadian of the last hundred years, the choice for an astounding number was Don Cherry, the guy with the loud ties – actually loud all over – from Hockey Night in Canada. In his case it obviously wasn’t a matter of charm, no, his frequent appearances on TV did the trick. (Heaven forbid should he ever decide to run for office of Prime Minister.) Our leading politicians, of course, are well aware of the benefit of frequent TV appearances during elections. But the considerable cost of TV spots condemns many candidates to a relative obscurity compared to some, who, thanks to sizeable corporate campaign donations, are able to hog the limelight and as a result are often more successful come voting time. It is then left for us to wonder where their loyalties lie, once elected. According to the Canadian Well-being Index, the quality of our lives declined by 24 per cent between 2008 and 2010. Isn’t it about time we started searching for that long lost old thinking cap ? Peter van Iersel Fruitvale
If I were in charge of the NHLPA, I would be concerned about how the fans are reacting to the NHL lockout, and do my best to at least get them on my side in this battle of millionaires vs millionaires. My remedy, I would get all the players in the NHLPA, group them into herds of 20 players and send them across country for a solid month. A month of playing charity games in small town Canada, along with local celebs or community volunteers. Then spend a couple of days with the minor hockey associations in those small
towns and then move on to the next town and do it all over again. Can you imagine? Forget the Vancouvers, Calgary, Edmonton.etc. The players do as much as they can in their towns during the season. The rest of Canada, the true hockey fans, would embrace this. The barns would be packed watching Iginla, Bieksa, Thorton, Price as they played fun, entertaining games and in the eyes of a child, a night they will never forget. The local charities would strengthen with these much needed and appreciated dol-
lars – something they have missed since the NHL teams no longer have their staggering 50/50 draws each game. The fans, who the players always say how important they are, would feel important, feel like a kid again as they too get to watch their favorite player at the game or skate along side them at the morning minor hockey practice! Far fetched? Not really. Just takes a bit of thought and planning. I can’t imagine any town not wanting to take part. Ben Postmus Fruitvale
NHLPA can mend fences with fans

Judge returns recommendations in Sweatman inquest BY GREG NESTEROFF Nelson Star
A Nelson coroner’s jury has made nine recommendations to prevent future deaths like that of a Nelson Search and Rescue volunteer. The suggestions are all directed at Emergency Management BC and the BC Search and Rescue Association and include standardized training and equipment for swift water teams, and a review of funding models to better support operations. The jury also calls for an audit of search and rescue groups in BC to ensure each is properly equipped, and the development of a standardized risk assessment tool for swift water operations. Sheilah Sweatman drowned in the Goat River near Creston on June 29, 2011 while attempting to recover a submerged vehicle. Her leg got caught on a steel cable and she was pulled into the water and drowned. The jury heard five lengthy days of testimony from about 20 witnesses this week before beginning their deliberations this morning. They reached their verdict late this afternoon. Sweatman’s father Wynn told reporters the jury was thorough and his family is happy to have
the recommendations. “I feel like we can now begin to move forward,” he said. Although the recommendations don’t specifically mention the use of steel cable in vehicle recoveries, Wynn said they do suggest that swift water teams use only their own equipment whenever possible. The jury also said appropriate tools for selfrescue and companion rescue “must be immediately accessible.” “In one way or another, all of those things contributed to losing Sheilah,” Wynn said. “I think Sheilah’s legacy will be a big improvement in standards.” Wynn was the last witness to testify Friday. He said no facts emerged at the inquest that weren’t previously learned in the 16 months since Sheilah’s death. “It made me mad it took so long to get to those issues that ultimately end up fairly simple. I told them Sheilah was courageous and passionate and that the managers and the system needs to protect the passionate volunteers.” He added the family has no interest in pursuing civil action in the case. BC Search and Rescue Association president Don
Bindon, who attended the inquest, said his members are “extremely grateful” for the jury’s work. Bindon says they have not been waiting for the inquest to make changes — plans are already afoot to standardize swift water training. Although the jury did not make any specific recommendations around vehicle recoveries, Bindon said they are looking at ways to reduce the hazards of such operations. The non-binding recommendations are provided to the chief coroner and then distributed to the groups named. The jury’s recommendations 1. That Emergency Management British Columbia expand the existing swift water task force to include members of search and rescue operations as well as the RCMP, BC River Guides Association, BC River Outfitters Association, WorkSafe BC and any other appropriate stakeholders. 2. That Emergency Management BC and British Columbia Search and Rescue Association develop universal standards for swift water rescue and recovery training to ensure consistent language and training applications. These universal
standards would require all swift water training providers to conform to these prescribed standards. 3. That Emergency Management BC and BC Search and Rescue Association develop universal standards for swift water rescue and recovery equipment. 4. That an audit be conducted of all search and rescue communities by BC Search and Rescue Association to ensure that each search and rescue community has the required equipment (including personal protective equipment) and training for their respective communities based on their unique areas. Where it is determined that there is a lack of the required equipment and/or training for that area, immediate consultation with BC Search and Rescue Association and Emergency Management BC must occur to determine steps to obtain the equipment and/or training with the goal of safety of all search and rescue members in BC. 5. That Emergency Management BC review and evaluate funding models to better support search and rescue operations, training and equipment similar to Volunteer Fire
Departments/ funding. 6. That swift water teams use only their own equipment during search and rescue operations whenever possible. If any unfamiliar equipment is introduced into a task, a proper risk assessment must be completed. The appropriate tools for self rescue and companion rescue must be immediately accessible. 7. That the volunteer policy and procedures manual specifically the policy for “Utilization of volunteers for search and rescue activities policy” be reviewed by Emergency Management BC to clarify and amend, where required, the roles and responsibilities of varying agencies involved in search and rescue activities. These groups include, but are not limited to search and rescue, policing agencies, coroner, Parks Canada, BC Ambulance and fire services. 8. That during an operation, a specific safety officer be designated whenever possible. This safety officer(s) position will be their sole function. 9. That Emergency Management BC with the assistance of the search and rescue stakeholders develop a standardized risk assessment tool for use in swift water operations.

Trail Smoke Eaters leading point getters Brent Baltus, 9, and Garrett McMullen, 23, try to generate some offence against the Salmon Arm Silverbacks on the weekend, but the Smokies came up short in both ends of a home-and-home series despite outshooting Salmon Arm in each game.
Smokies run into big ‘Backs-stopper BY JIM BAILEY
Times Sports Editor
The Trail Smoke Eaters had a tough week, dropping three in a row to division opponents including a pair of losses to Salmon Arm on the weekend. Coming off a 7-6 loss to Penticton on Wednesday, fatigue looked like it may have been a factor Friday night as the Smokies lacked intensity in a 4-0 loss to Salmon Arm, but coach Bill Birks doesn’t buy it. “These guys are in pretty good shape, that’s an excuse I don’t believe in,” said Birks. “They took them too lightly and Salmon Arm came out and worked hard and took it to us.” With the two wins, the Backs leapfrogged the Smokies to sit a point ahead and tied with Vernon, but thanks to Merritt and West Kelowna losses on the weekend, the Interior division remains close with second place Merritt and sixth place Trail separated by just five points. “It was a huge weekend, we needed some points and didn’t get them, but other teams didn’t get as many as they hoped as well and still kept it kind of tight.” Silverbacks goalie Adam Clark allowed just two goals on 76 shots as he backstopped the team to a shut out
on Friday and a 5-2 win Saturday in Salmon Arm. “Their goalie played really well, we didn’t play very good here Friday night but I thought we played really well in Salmon Arm on Saturday, it’s just that their goalie was good and we couldn’t score.” Clark stopped 28 shots in the 4-0 shut out then put in a 41 save performance the next night. Despite outshooting the ‘Backs in both games, Trail had a hard time solving the hulking six-footfive New Hampshire University commit. Evan Anderson scored the winner, when he stole the puck from a Smokie defender and slipped it by goalie Lyndon Stanwood at17:02 of the second period for a 3-1 Silverbacks lead. Ryan Schwalbe opened the scoring at 5:01 in the first, wristing a shot by Stanwood to put the ‘Backs up 1-0. The Smokies would tie it less than a minute later after Brent Baltus finished a nice passing play from Garrett McMullen and Scott Davidson. However, Steve Iacobellis scored his first of two on the night, converting a pass from new captain Brandon Mistal to put the ‘Backs up for good. Baltus notched his second of the night at 8:35 of the third to make it 3-2 but Iacobellis and Anderson each added
their second goals of the evening to finish the scoring, and make the final 5-2. Baltus improved his scoring output to 18 goals and 13 assists and sits in fifth in BCHL scoring. “He’s playing really good. He’s our leader on the ice point wise, well deserving of the scholarship (to University of Alaska) - he’s still going hard which tells you what kind of character the guy has.” The shots were 43-34 in favour of Trail. On Friday, the Smokies had a rare off-night at home, as they looked sluggish and had a hard time generating any meaningful offensive opportunities, while the ‘Backs scored two power play goals and a short-handed marker on their way to the 4-0 win. The Smokies went 0-for-13 on the power play on the weekend, and will need a much improved effort when they hit the road for three games this weekend. “We throw the puck around like NHL guys and don’t shoot it, you know it’s frustrating. But it’s a work in progress and we’ve got to keep working on it this week,” added Birks. The Smokies leave for the coast Thursday, playing the Powell River Kings Friday, Coquitlam Express Saturday, and Chilliwack Chiefs on Sunday.
THE CANADIAN PRESS TORONTO - Ricky Ray saw it coming out of training camp. These Toronto Argonauts had a special bond. They might not have been the biggest, fastest or most heralded. But they had each other’s back. Ray, who came over from the Edmonton Eskimos in a blockbuster off-season trade, credits GM Jim Barker and rookie head coach Scott Milanovich for choosing the right pieces in assembling what was to become a Grey Cup champion squad. “Scott and the staff and Jim coming out of training camp didn’t necessarily pick the best most talented guys,” said the veteran quarterback. “They picked guys that were going to be good teammates over some of those guys. “That’s where it’s got to start with, it’s got to start with the locker-room and how everybody gets along and everybody playing for each other out there. I think that’s been the biggest difference for us.’’ Barker says he and Milanovich both believe “it’s not necessarily the 46 best players but it’s the best 46 players.” “That means the 46 that can work together the best,’’ the GM said in an interview Monday. “Through the year, we went through players and we did make different moves but it was about finding the right blend of players - of veterans and rookies.’’ See RIGHT, Page 12

Hawks host Braves BY TIMES STAFF The Beaver Valley Nitehawks play an important division game tonight against the Spokane Braves at the Beaver Valley Arena. The Braves are just four points back of the Hawks for third spot in the Neil Murdoch Division, and Beaver Valley, with 26 points, would like to extend that to six rather than have it cut to two. The Nitehawks are coming off a split this weekend, beating Columbia Valley Rockies 5-3 Saturday after a 5-1 loss to Golden Rockets Friday. Kurt Black had another big night, getting first-star honours and scoring his third hat trick of the season to lead the Hawks. Black’s last hat trick
came against the Nelson Leafs in a 7-6 loss two weeks ago, and since that time he has netted six goals and an assist in five games. But inconsistency has plagued the Hawks and it was no more evident than when they lost to Creston a week ago 8-3 then rebounded to beat them the next night 7-0. Beaver Valley’s Nick Perez continues to lead the Hawks with 10 goals and 17 assists, followed by Black and Taylor Stafford with 17 points apiece. Putting together a string of wins would certainly help the Hawks get in sight of division leaders Nelson and Castlegar which have 40 and 38 points respectively.

coach who prepares meticulously, Milanovich laid out what was expected. Argos players knew they didn’t have to worry about the changing moods of their head coach or jump through hoops, just execute what they were told. Barker, meanwhile, said he knew upon acquiring Ray that this team could be special if they made the right moves around him. “All along I felt we
had a great opportunity this year,’’ he said. Every pro athlete has a history. And the Argonauts do not have a patent on hard-luck stories. But finding the diamonds in the rough remains a challenge. “In this league, there’s a lot of football players out there that have stories, there’s reasons why they maybe aren’t first-round picks in the NFL,’’ said Barker. “Our job is to go out and uncover those and

we go across the country looking for those kind of players.’’ Giving them a home leads to ties that bind. “Everybody on this team, you ask them, somewhere they had to overcome something to get to this point,’’ Ray said prior to Toronto’s 35-22 championship win over the Calgary Stampeders. “We’re a family, we just came together, stuck together and just played great football.’’ Ray noticed something special about his new teams from Day 1 at mini-camp. “Everybody was ‘Hey welcome back,’ giving each other hugs whether you were on offence or defence or special teams,’’ he recalled. “Lot of times when you play on teams, you kind of have the defensive guys and the offensive guys. And this team has been totally different, everybody gets along regardless.’’ Building the team took time. But the rewards for the investment in time and research were worth it. Still it took a while for this recipe for success to take. Mistakes, penalties and injuries all made for some bumps in the 2012 campaign. And it took time got the team to jell and absorb new offensive and defensive schemes. Toronto needed to win its last two games just to finish at 9-9. The Argos came together before the Oct. 27 game against Saskatchewan, according to Grey Cup MVP running back Chad Kackert. It was the penultimate game of their regular season. ``I think we had a realization before the Saskatchewan game that we had to win or we were going to lose a huge opportunity,’’ he said. ``Thankfully we answered the call there and we’ve been rolling ever since.’’ Toronto downed the Roughriders 31-26 and kept winning, ending the season with five straight victories and a championship trophy _ before their home crowd in the 100th Grey Cup.

Newspaper-covered countertops are a fire hazard Mailbox
Marcy Sugar & Kathy Mitchell
All of this escapes my mother’s attention, and she just piles the papers on her counters, which are, by the way, in great shape because she never actually uses them. Mom reads your column every day and follows your advice. I am out of options. -- A Caring Daughter Who Is Making Herself Sick Over This Dear Daughter: Has Mom always lined her countertops with newsprint? If she’s been eating ink and bugs for more than 90 years, we assume she has a strong immune system. Also, her eyesight might not be as good as it once was, and she might not see the smeared ink
luck. She called me immediately to thank me. I sent her a second check and again received an immediate thank you. I would have sent my nieces another check if they had acknowledged the original gift. I am disheartened to think I have such ungrateful relatives. How do I handle this disappointment? -Frustrated in Michigan Dear Michigan: Please recognize that it’s quite possible these girls have never written a thank-you note and were not taught that it is appropriate and expected. Here is your opportunity to teach them. Contact each girl individually and ask whether she received the gift and liked it. It’s OK to say that you were disappointed not to hear from them, because it made them appear ungrateful and surely that was not their intent. We think they will fall all over them-
selves thanking you, as well they should. Dear Annie: This is in response to the letter from “Don’t Do Business with Friends,” whose husband and best friend went into business together and it didn’t turn out well.
Please remind your readers never to enter into a partnership with anyone, including friends and family, without having a partnership agreement that spells out exactly what will happen if the partnership is terminated.
A written contract will save a lot of headaches -- and in many cases heartache -- when it’s time to part ways. -Reader in Kentucky Annie’s Mailbox is written by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar.

Sudoku is a number-placing puzzle based on a 9x9 grid with several given numbers. The object is to place the numbers 1 to 9 in the empty squares so that each row, each column and each 3x3 box contains the same number only once. The difficulty level of the Conceptis Sudoku increases from Monday to Friday. and small insects. Your focus should be on the fire hazard. Any paper that rests near an electric cooktop (or any cooktop) is a risk. Mom -- if you’re reading this, please wash your countertops instead of covering them with old newspapers. Your daughter wants you to be healthy and safe. So do we. Dear Annie: I have worked hard all of my life and now find that I am financially very well off and can afford to be generous with my money. Since I believe charity begins at home, I sent two $1,000 checks to two nieces who are going to college. It has been more than a month, and I have not heard anything from them. I even emailed the mother of one, thinking the check had gotten lost because it wasn’t cashed. It was then deposited, but still no thank-you note. I also sent a check to a friend who has been down on her

Dear Annie: My mother is in her late 90s. She insists on covering her kitchen counters with newspaper, including the areas right next to the electric cooktop and the microwave. My mother does not see this as a fire risk. She thinks it is keeping a clean house. The last time I cleaned her kitchen, I was disgusted by the small insects and bits of food that were trapped between the newspaper sections. Her housekeeper simply goes along with her wishes and leaves the newspapers where they are. But, Annie, if this paper catches fire, Mom would never make it out of the house alive. I am not sure why she insists on putting her food on top of newsprint. She says newspapers are sterile. But the paper is handled by many people and sits in delivery trucks that are hardly spotless. Those who deliver it aren’t wearing rubber gloves.

YourByhoroscope Francis Drake For Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2012 ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Pay attention to everything you say and do, because the Full Moon today can create an accident-prone situation for you. Slow down and take it easy. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Avoid disputes about money, shared property and inheritances today, because the Full Moon makes everyone overly emotional. It’s a bad day for stupid arguments. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) The only Full Moon in your sign all year is taking place today. This could create tension between you and others, especially partners and close friends. Chill out. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) You might encounter difficulty with co-workers and colleagues because of today’s Full Moon. Decide to sit this one out. (Which is what you

want anyway.) LEO (July 23 to Aug. 22) Romantic arguments are likely today because of the Full Moon. Difficulties with children and sports accidents also are possible. You can avoid these by being calm and patient. VIRGO (Aug. 23 to Sept. 22) You feel pulled in two directions: the demands of your career versus the demands of home and family. What will it be? (You can’t ignore family now.) LIBRA (Sept. 23 to Oct. 22) The Full Moon today creates an accident-prone influence for your sign, so slow down and be careful. Allow extra time for everything so that you have wiggle room for the unexpected. SCORPIO (Oct. 23 to Nov. 21) Avoid nasty arguments about shared possessions, inheritances and debt. These could get out of hand because
of the Full Moon today. Easy does it. Why go overboard? SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 to Dec. 21) Today the only Full Moon all year that is opposite your sign is taking place. This is why it is stressful dealing with partners and close friends. Therefore, avoid this potential nastiness; postpone discussions until tomorrow. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 to Jan. 19) Challenges that are work-
related are unavoidable today, because people feel tension due to today’s Full Moon. However, a little patience and tolerance can overcome this very easily. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 to Feb. 18) You want to play today! Sports, romance, fun times with children, movies and social occasions all appeal. Be aware that people are on edge because of the Full Moon tension today.
PISCES (Feb. 19 to March 20) Be extra-patient with family members, because today’s Full Moon can heighten everyone’s emotional response to each other. It’s not a big deal, but it’s there.
