The Connor family’s property on Downes Road in Abbotsford was a flurry of activity on Wednesday morning. Outside, Abbotsford Police Const. Paul Walker was operating an excavator to clear the site of garbage and move around old cars that would later be taken to the scrapyard. His fellow officers and other volunteers were manually cleaning up the property, moving items into the dumpster in the front yard. In all, more than 20 police officers, firefighters and members of the public gathered at the site for the first day of a massive volunteer effort that will see Ann and Bill Connor in a new home before Christmas. The couple, both in their 80s, had no insurance when their home was destroyed. Bill has lived on the property since he was two years old. ‘Truly a community effort’ From A1

Firefighters Charitable Society and the Abbotsford Police Union announced they would co-ordinate all the offers that were pouring in from the community and beyond. Sgt. Judy Dizy and her husband, firefighter Craig Bird, agreed to head the efforts, and both were on site on Wednesday. Bird said that within 72 hours of the two organizations announcing their plans to help the Connors, donations had come in to cover all that was needed. “Everything has been taken care of. We don’t need anything else. This is

truly a community effort,” he said. Bird said the rebuild will be completed without touching the trust fund that friends set up for the Connors. Dizy said she has been moved by the generosity. “It’s very emotional … The fact that the community can always come together and always support each other – what more can you ask for?” Numerous police officers and firefighters are skilled tradespeople and are volunteering their time off work to assist with things such as electrical work, plumbing and drywalling. Among them are Const. Walker and

Const. Phil Sawatsky. Both were on site Wednesday, after having finished a night shift with the Abbotsford Police Department. “Nobody wishes this on anybody,” Walker said of the fire and why he wanted to help. “I wouldn’t want my parents to go through this.” Bill Connor and his son John were also at the scene, and said they were touched and grateful that people would do so much for them. “I really appreciate it … It’s not easy at my age (to go through such trauma),” Bill said. The shell of the home and the founda-

tion will remain, and volunteers are expected to start the rebuilding process on Friday. They are intent on completing the project before Christmas. Dizy said the rebuild will include one crucial component – the chimney insert that was previously missing from the home because the Connors couldn’t afford it, preventing them from getting insurance. Holiday spirit coming downtown 23rd annual tree lighting set for Sunday, Nov. 25

It’s about to become festive in the downtown core. The 23rd annual Christmas Tree Lighting is set for Nov. 25 from 1-5 p.m. and everyone is invited to enjoy the holiday spirit. Tina Stewart, executive director of the Abbotsford Downtown Business Association, said a full slate of entertainment and activities is planned. “We have probably twice as many vendors this year selling Christmas crafts and baked goods.” There will also be non-stop entertainment on the community stage, including performances from local dance schools and bands, including Topaz and Horizon. Even Mayor Bruce Banman will be singing at the event. “He was a big hit last year. I think he surprised a lot of people,” said Stewart. As always, hot chocolate and cookies will be available for kids and adults alike. At 3 p.m., Santa and Mrs. Claus will arrive in a 1967 fire truck, ac-

companied by the SilverFox Squadron Marching Band, Abbotsford Police motorcycles, members of Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service and local mascots. “It’s like a mini-parade.” Santa will take a seat in his Santa

House, which is being sponsored by Champagne and Lace. Kids can visit and tell him their Christmas wish lists. There will also be four “make and take” craft booths for kids to enjoy.

On Sunday, at 3 p.m., Santa will arrive downtown inside a 1967 fire truck.

At 5 p.m., the big moment arrives as the Christmas tree will be lit for the first time this season. “We have a few additions to the tree this year. A few new surprise lights have been added,” said Stewart. Other activities include a puzzle walk. For a minimum donation of $2, people can collect a puzzle piece from participating local merchants. Once they have collected all four pieces, they will be entered into a draw for a large gift basket. All proceeds go to Matthew’s House, a respite facility for children with severe disabilities. It is currently under construction as part of the Campus of Care, located next to Abbotsford Regional Hospital. It’s not the only prize being given away. Stewart said thanks to the sponsorship of Investors Group, one lucky person will win a free trip. While details are still being worked out, the winner will get to choose from one of three vacation packages. “It’s going to be a great event and, hopefully, the sun will be shining. AESC ranked 13th in the world

The Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre finished 2011-12 as the 13th highest ranked venue in the world as well as second highest amongst Canadian venues, according to Venues Today Magazine, for facilities sized between

5,001 and 10,000 seats. “To be recognized by such a prominent industry publication is a wonderful achievement,” said Global Spectrum’s Jason Blumenfeld, general manager of the AESC. Venues year-end rankings

cover the reporting period from Oct. 16, 2011 to Oct. 15 2012; in that time, the AESC welcomed over 82,000 fans during the 33 non-sport related events. The report is based on concert and non-sports event gross sales and attendance.

Six local dancers are included in the cast of The Nutcracker, presented by the Royal City Youth Ballet. The show takes place Nov. 24 at the Abbotsford Arts Centre.

Youth ballet presents holiday classic Every year, when the Christmas season approaches, dancers of the Royal City Youth Ballet descend upon Abbotsford to perform everybody’s favorite Christmas classic “The Nutcracker.” The company currently holds the distinction of being the longest running seasonal ballet performance in Canada and for the past 24 years has attracted young dancers from various dance schools around the lower mainland. This year many of those dancers hail from the Abbotsford area and have been cast in supporting roles. Abbotsford’s Myra McBeth and Amaillie Holmsen-Wong are two of the youngest members and have been cast as baby mice and Emileigh Gesner will play the dancing bear. In addition, three children from the Jones family will also be performing. Ryan and Jarrod Jones

are cast as party sceneboys and are joined by their sister Rana who will be performing as one of the villainous big mice in the fight scene. All of the dancers have been members of the company for two years or longer. The Royal City Youth Ballet Company is a non-profit society dedicated to engaging young people and the arts. The company’s focus is on building self esteem, discipline and other life skills. Dancers, who range from six years of age and up, enter ballet boot camp early in September. They rehearse long hours every weekend preparing for 21 shows which take place at seven theatres throughout B.C. The Abbotsford performance is set for Nov. 24 at 2:30 p.m. at the Abbotsford Arts Centre (33355 Bevan Ave.). Tickets are available at the door.

An inspiring community

It is truly inspiring and fulfilling to see what this community can do when there is need. On Nov. 11, Bill and Ann Connor came home from their morning coffee outing to find their humble little house on Downes Road had been gutted by fire. The couple, both in their 80s, were not insured. As soon as the media carried the story, the community support began to pour in, and the Abbotsford Firefighters Charitable Society and the Abbotsford Police Union teamed up to coordinate the offers of help. By last weekend, it began to appear that so much volunteer labour and donated household items and supplies were available, that the Connors’ home could be rebuilt and refurnished, without even touching the trust fund set up for them. On Wednesday, more than 20 police officers, firefighters and members of the public gathered at the

site for the first day of a monumental volunteer effort that will see the home restored by Christmas. Everything required to rebuild the bungalow – from building material to appliances to furniture – has been donated. Tradespeople have come forward to take care of the skilled labour required, and handymen from all callings are lending a hand. Abbotsford Police Sgt. Judy Dizy who, along with her firefighter husband, is heading the effort, said the outpouring of support has been “very emotional. “The fact that the community can always come together and always support each other – what more can you ask for?” What more indeed? To all of the people and businesses who stepped up for the Connors, thank you. You make Abbotsford proud.

Real issue of farmland should be the future

I went to the city hall meeting to hear a developer pitch his proposal to take up to 400 acres of land from Bradner and turn it into an “industrial park.” This developer is promising millions of dollars in tax revenue, and thousands of jobs. For the most part there were two obvious kinds of people attending with me – namely farmers, who are worried about industry encroachment on their way of life (mainly in the form of noise and traffic), and secondly, people who bought ALR land and would really like to sell it as industrialzoned land. Also, there appeared to be many children of the latter who would like to work in one of the thousands of jobs that will be available to them in this industrial area when they graduate. Much like seven years ago when this same development was defeated, people inside the proposed zone attested to terrible soil, soil unfit to grow anything, soil so bad it rotted the feet off the goats at one poor woman’s farm. Amazingly, just outside the red lines of the map, people have soil which is good enough to run productive farms,

growing vegetable and berry crops, and raising dairy cattle (and even goats with good feet) – many who have farmed in Bradner for generations. I’m not going to argue what matters or who matters more, however, I would caution people who don’t have a use for farmland to buy it on speculation that it can be rezoned out of the ALR. The real issue should be the future, as a couple of speakers pointed out. Hundreds of acres were removed from the ALR for industrial development near the airport years ago and the city has been spending considerable tax dollars to

On a rain-soaked Wednesday afternoon at Mouat Field, two Abbotsford football teams punched their tickets to the B.C. finals. In Grade 10 AA semifinal action, the Abby Senior Panthers edged Vernon 21-16, writing another chapter in a remarkable turnaround story. The Panthers finished 1-7 last season with a roster predominantly comprised of Grade 9 athletes. But those players stuck with it and came back strong, and now they’re off to play for the provincial title at B.C. Place Stadium next Saturday vs. the Mission Roadrunners. “To play where the B.C. Lions play, it’s unbelievable,” marveled Abby Senior quarterback Grayson Marquardt,

who rushed for all three Panthers’ touchdowns on Wednesday. “I’m kind of at a loss for words. But we’re ready for it, I think.” Abby Senior coach Rick Funk said that earning a berth to the B.C. final was a just reward for his crew after taking their lumps last year. “They got beat up physically, they got beat up on the scoreboard, and they never gave up hope for one minute,” Funk enthused. “All their bruises became badges, and this year it’s paid off. RBC contributes to after-school program at Harry Sayers Last month, a $33,000 contribution was presented to the Harry Sayers Elementary afterschool program from the Royal Bank of Canada. The program supports three components – literacy, healthy eating and physical activity. The program will provide a buffer of support for children who are struggling with myriad issues. It will provide the community with more hope for the academic and social success for their children and it provides safe after-school supervision that these children need. It will also help create an environment that is both engaging and educational. The initiative will reach many children who would not have the

opportunity to participate in afterschool programs because of economic and social circumstances. Having a no-cost program, located in their local school, will bypass many of the barriers to participation. Abbotsford Mayor Bruce Banman, Police Chief Bob Rich, Coun. Les Barkman, school board chair John Sutherland, PRC commission chair Cindy Schafer, along with Harry Sayers students and RBC representative Amin Hassam, were all in attendance for the presentation of the $33,000 cheque given to the Harry Sayers Elementary after-school program. Organizers want to thank Price Smart Foods of Abbotsford for providing healthy snacks.

Two Abbotsford residents are among 48 students from across B.C. to have their outstanding efforts recognized with Coast Capital Savings Education Awards this year. Kyle Epp was awarded the credit union’s Citizenship Award valued at $2,000 for his achievements in juggling school, personal activities and community involvement.

On top of a full course load, Epp volunteers every week helping the homeless in Surrey by providing food and clothing. Melody Pilkey, also of Abbotsford, took home a $5,000 Standing Tall Award for making a positive impact on her community in the face of personal challenges. “I can’t express how thankful I am to be recognized

with an education award from Coast Capital Savings,” said Pilkey, who is studying nursing at TWU. “I know there were many deserving applicants this year and to be among such outstanding recipients is a huge honour.” This year Coast Capital Savings presented a total of $144,000 to deserving students from across the province.

BUHLER Leslie Following Leslie’s heart surgery and further complications, Leslie was welcomed into heaven on November 19, 2012. He will be lovingly remembered as a husband, father, grandpa, friend and missionary to India. He was predeceased by his wife, Verna. He will be missed by his wife, Margaret, brother Cal Buehler, sister Vivian Friesen, sons and daughters Tim (Doreen) Buhler, Becky (Dave) Stinson, Sheryl (Graham) Hanks, Dan (Amber) Buhler, grandchildren, great grandchildren and many friends around the world. A celebration of Leslie’s life will take place at Central Heights Church on Tuesday, November 27th at 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to International Christian Missions Service for the Bible School in India.

DONES Eileen On October 28, 2012 Eileen Dones died peacefully at Menno Home at 90 years of age. Eileen is survived by husband Jack, daughter Maureen and nephews Stephen and Jack Witt. Eileen was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba and prior to marriage she worked as a secretary at CN Rail. Jack and Eileen were married on February 10, 1951 and had a long and happy marriage. Eileen enjoyed sewing, designing her own clothing, knitting and gardening. She will be missed by her family. Many thanks to the wonderful, caring staff at Menno Home. There will be no service, by request. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society.

Early Tuesday morning, Wilbur Devries passed into the loving arms of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. He was surrounded by his family. Wilbur was born on May 5, 1932, in St. Anna Parohge, Friesland. He is survived by his loving wife of 56 ½ years, Lies Devries, their children Ann (Stephen) Trudeau, Caroline (Eric) Haan, and Marion (Rick) Bouwknecht, and their grandchildren, Nicole, Jesse (Lisa), Kyle, Amanda & Erin, and was soon to be a great-grandfather. Wilbur is also survived by his sister Mae (John) Vlieg and brother Jerry (Trudy) Devries. He was predeceased by his parents Klaske and Sietse Devries, and his sister Evelyn (Bill) Visser. Wilbur immigrated from Holland with his family in 1947, and settled in Edmonton, Alberta. There he made his home and raised his family. He worked for Northwestern Utilities until 1989, when he took an early retirement. He and Lies then moved to Abbotsford, B.C. to be near their children. Wilbur loved being involved in his church. He was a member of Living Hope Christian Reformed Church in Abbotsford since his move there, and spent many years serving on consistory. His love for his Heavenly Father was a huge part of who Wilbur was, and he and Lies raised their children to believe the same. Wilbur loved his family and thoroughly enjoyed spending time with them. He has left a large void in their lives. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm Monday, November 26 at Living Hope Christian Reformed Church, 34631 Old Clayburn Road, Abbotsford, officiated by Pastor Colin VanderPloeg. The family wish to thank the emergency staff and Abbotsford Regional Hospital and the staff at the Royal Columbian Hospital HAU for all their care and support during this time. Nachhatter loved to roam around Sher’s farm and will forever be remembered for his easygoing demeanour and infectious laugh.
