Giant windmill blades arrive Black Press
PORT HARDY— The first gigantic wind turbine components destined for the Knob Hill wind farm site have arrived in Port
Hardy. The 4,500-hectare site at Knob Hill was initially selected by Seabreeze Power Corp. after an extensive research project and a call from BC Hydro
for suppliers of green energy. International Power ( IPR-GDF Suez) then bought phase one of the site after striking a deal with BC Hydro to supply them with
99mW, enough power to supply 30,000 homes. Seabreeze retains the phase two portion of the site with the option for future development. The power will
be manufactured by 55 turbines, each of which has three 50-metre blades. The first blade came from Nanaimo to Port Hardy last week on a purpose-built rig. The transport, 185 feet in length, has steerable rear wheels hydraulically connected to the cab to allow the massive trailer to negotiate corners. Each of the wind
turbines will be transported north in eight pieces — three tower segments, three blades, a hub and the nacelle, which houses the generating components. Because the transportation is necessarily oversized to haul such massive components, the bulk of the runs will take place overnight, so as to cause minimum disruption to traffic.
The components will be stored at a purpose-cleared staging area in Port Hardy while roads to the wind farm site are completed. The wind farm, the first such largescale wind farm on Vancouver Island, is scheduled to begin commercial operations in July of 2013 and is contracted to provide power to BC Hydro for 20 years.

My back is doing so much better and Don who has been on prescription sleeping pills for several years is now off them completely. He just quit them cold turkey and is sleeping like a baby. Needless to say, we are thrilled with our decision to go for the Celliant Sleep Rejuvenation System as our health is worth it.” Ellie and Don Charbonneau DEEPER SLEEPS, MORE ENERGIZED DAY “As the advertising representative from the Parksville Qualicum Beach News, I had the advantage of hearing many customer testimonials about your recovery mattress first hand. After hearing all the amazing things this bed offers, deciding on purchasing the mattress was an easy choice. Its not often you find a bed that offers so many health benefits, besides a great sleep. Since owning the mattress, I have had deeper sleeps, an easier time waking up, and have more energy throughout the day.” Tom Alexander, PQB News, Parksville RELIEF FOR MS SUFFERER “I am a 34 year old with MS. I can spend an entire night pain-free and comfortable in my own bed! I now sleep much cooler. It’s amazing what a great night’s sleep can do for your body and your attitude! Not only am I sleeping better, but I truly believe that the pain I feel during the day has been reduced. Thank you for making my life easier for a person who struggles daily.” Christina Coke PEACEFUL NIGHTS – NO MORE SNORES! “We purchased a Celliant Sleep Rejuvenation System and we love the bed, and had a great sleep every night since then. I wake up refreshed although I spent less time in bed. Nothing hurts or aches. My husband who used to say that I snore says I no longer do. This is truly the most comfortable bed I have ever slept in. Thank you.” Klaire

Tom Pallan’s family has celebrated a lot of firsts, including being one of the original Indo-Canadian families to settle in Canada. “We’ve been here since 1906,” explains Pallan, founder of the highly successful Pallan Group. In addition, Pallan was the first person of Indo-Canadian heritage to graduate from the forestry program at UBC. Today, at age 80, he shows the same pioneering spirit. Pallan recently became part the first cohort of alumni
volunteers to read and rank the new Broad Based Admissions (BBA) application forms submitted by prospective UBC Forestry students. “Part of the reason forestry students are required to submit an essay with their application is because UBC wants to attract well-rounded people who will be helpful to society,” Pallan reveals. “You can tell a lot about an applicant by the way they express themselves, their interests, and commitments,” he continues. “For example, if

Helping students along the pathway to higher education is important role for Tom Pallan. they embark on something—do they stay with it? People from all over the world apply to UBC. and his family endured a lot of adversity and hardship, but they were determined to rise above it. “Our philosophy was to work hard and raise ourselves—that’s why we all went to school.” Pallan’s father Cont. on Page 7

with Don Daniels email: dond@campbellrivermirror.com This time of year the colder weather will keep anglers off the local lakes and rivers but those who venture out the Quinsam can have some Cutties caught & released on fun with lots of elbow room. Last week I fished the Quinsam River and the first few minutes I was into catching cutties using a number 6 hook tied with a silver body. This catch and Release River is ideal fishing at the moment because of the low water level and clear water. The locals know the pools and some nice Steelhead fishing can be had in the various pools. If you plan to fish a specific lake this time of year remember there is some snow in the upper elevation lakes and the roads can be rough and wet. Fishing from shore can be very productive using power bait or lures. With the shorter daylight hours a good time to fish is late afternoon until it gets dark. The Sport Fishing Institute of British Columbia recently held meetings in Victoria, Campbell River and a dy. Port Hardy. The recent meeting in Campbell River was well attended and the local aanglers, Lodge owners and guides were informed about issues tthat affect sport fishing in the area.

The Comox Fire Department has a training facility that attracts experienced firefighters, but also raw recruits. Photo submitted
Comox Fire Department puts newbies through the ‘code three grind’ Erin Haluschak Black Press COMOX — Nine new recruits faced a physical challenge earlier this month to see not who could lift the most or run the fastest, but ultimately who could help those in need. The nine recruits are working their way through the intensive training required to be a volunteer, on-call firefighter for the Comox Fire Department, explained Fire Chief Gord Schreiner. The recruits must past the physical ‘code three grind’ test to continue with training, said Schreiner. “This year, we had 24 applicants, which is a fair number, and we had nine candidates selected to perform the physical challenge,” he noted, and added the recruits now have to train for anywhere between another three months to a year before they can assist on a fire. Schreiner said he credits the excellent
training facility on site at the fire hall which is used not only by local firefighters, but those from across the Island and province to attract volunteers. Although it is challenging to find people to cover the Monday-to-Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. shift, Schreiner noted the department does offer flexibility, particularly for those working shift work. He added he looks for three distinct qualities in individuals interested in joining: “You must be physically fit, highly dedicated and highly motivated.” Schreiner explained volunteers must commit to a two-house Tuesday night practice, but the timing can be somewhat flexible for those who have to work. Once a month, new recruits also have to attend one Saturday training day. Although the overall training takes about a year, Schreiner said some of the recruits can respond to medical emergencies within three months,
depending on their background. Out of the current group of recruits, he noted five have had prior training and two had training as military firefighters. With more than $1 million invested in their training facility, Schreiner said he’s “very proud” of the site Comox has to offer. “We’ve got everything you need to train a firefighter on site,” he noted, and added they are one of two facilities on the Island and one of four within the province to have a live fire building. “We’ve had firefighters from Chetwynd, Bowen Island and we’ve got career firefighters from Victoria coming up to train,” he said, and explained Comox has five full-time instructors, which keeps the facility to capacity nearly every weekend. gasp for air anymore. I sleep through the night and feel rested and refreshed in the morning. Mark Wilson, 40, Hudson, NH Sleep apnea capsules worked first night! For last 15 years I had sleep apnea and my doctor made me buy a CPAP machine, which I could not use. Finally Bell #23 helped the first night and every night thereafter. Like a miracle. Unbelievable. Karen Braun, 67, Glace Bay, NS For 20 years I was waking up frequently gasping for air. During the day I would start napping every time I would sit down, because I was tired. Since taking Bell #23 sleeping 6 hours is heaven. It made a substantial change in my life. Mary C. Myrick, 62, Jackson, MS It is such a joy not having to use the CPAP machine. I have had sleep apnea for 10 years. Using Bell#23, my wife says there is no more snoring or stoppage of breathing. It is such a joy to be able to roll to left or right with no hose or mask to deal with. Thank you Bell for a great relief. I suggest anyone with these problems to try it. You will be overjoyed with the results. Wayne Burse, 63, Beamsville, ON.

Stem Cell Activator
Helps to activate naturally millions of stem cells from our own bone marrow. The increase in stem cells released from the bone marrow into the blood stream have the potential to become other types of tissue cells with specialized function. Stem cells will multiply and are able to become heart cells, liver cells or any other organ. Located everywhere in our body, stem cells are even under our skin layered between the epidermis and dermis. This is why an increase in stem cells under our skin may help to create a more youthful cell that would replenish elastin and collagen and thus may make us look younger. If our bone marrow does not produce enough stem cells this can result in many illnesses, especially a weak heart, kidneys, liver, pancreas, in fact all healthy functions of our body are decreased. Sufficient stem cells in our body have a great potential of self-repair and the ability to rejuvenate tissues. It does not contain live human stem cells as these can only be transplanted by surgery and are subject to immuno-suppressant drugs to avoid graft rejection. Naturopathic Doctor summarized his experience in writing after using this Stem Cell Activator: Used for all organ and tissue damage, heart attack damage, osteo-arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, traumatic brain injury, muscular dystrophy, Crohn’s disease, diabetes, lupus, spinal injuries, and other diseases and tissue damage. The results have been #63 very satisfactory to us and to the patients and the time varies with different patients depending on the extremity of the damage. Women witnessing the effects of Bell Stem Cell Activator: Women looking for antiaging help! We all want to slow down aging. After using a bottle of Bell Stem Cell Activator #63 my skin seemed smoother and brighter. My hair looked healthier. It seems to have a cleansing effect. I’m delighted. Leona McCormick, 50, Clgary, AB All around healing effect! The first thing I noticed after starting Bell Stem Cell Activator #63 was that my skin feels firmer and stronger. My friends commented that my skin looks more vibrant. My doctor at my yearly physical told me that my blood pressure is significantly lower. Many good things are happening. Joy Davison, 55, Calgary, AB

depends on the degree of crowding. Severe crowding is often best treated with orthodontics (braces) to straighten the teeth. Moderate to mild crowding can also be treated with Invisalign, which utilizes clear trays that are custom made and move teeth gradually and gently. This can be done at your family dental Dr. Joseph Schafermeyer office. Another way to change the appearance of teeth is with composites. These are tooth-coloured resin fillings that are bonded to repair decayed, chipped, fractured, or discoloured teeth. They can also be used to close spaces between teeth, make teeth look longer, or change the shape or colour of teeth. They usually last several years, depend on how much bonding was done and oral/biting habits. Other options include porcelain veneers and crowns. These are thin layers of porcelain that are placed and bonded to prepared teeth. They can be used in situations where one wishes to change the shape, colour, or overall appearance of his or her teeth. They are very lifelike and can last for many years with proper care. In order to find out which treatment would work best for you, please speak to your dentist, or call us for an exam or free Invisilign consultation.

Naturopathic approaches to prostate cancer treatment and prevention Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among Canadian men (excluding nonmelanoma skin cancer). In 2012 an estimated 26,500 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer and 4,000 will die of it and one in seven men will develop prostate cancer during his lifetime and one in 28 will die of it. Most men in prostate cancer support groups would caution
men to follow their PSA velocity. What this means is that men of all ages should know their baseline PSA number and then monitor the numbers themselves. If the PSA number doubles in any one year period this needs to be monitored and/or treated. The wonderful thing about naturopathic medicine is that when you attempt to prevent cancers you are helping to prevent all cancer types as many of the same remedies
are used for different recommendations cancer types. The five for prostate cancer key pathways treatment as in the body outlined in that the the Townsend naturopathic Newsletter physician December addresses 2010 are in cancer routinely prevention and recommended treatment are: Dr. Ingrid by inflammation, Pincott naturopathic detoxification, Naturally Healthy physicians immune, as well. I oxidation and stress believe the following pathways. recommendations The Amitabha are also important for clinic in California prevention: is run by Dr. Eliaz Gastrointestinal and some of their Health Intestinal
health is an area that is central to cancer treatment. Dysbiosis can take the form of an overgrowth of pathogenic bacteria or fungus, parasitic disease, food sensitivity, pancreatic enzyme deficiency, or chronic inflammation in the colon or small intestine. Anyone with chronic illness typically has one of these issues. Unresolved GI health issues can result in immune dysfunction, poor digestion,
poor nutrient absorption, chronic infection, toxicity from pathogenic byproducts, or chronic inflammation. How I recommend preventing issues in the gastrointestinal tract is to take a good quality probiotic daily and keep the bowels open. Resolving issues such as gastrointestinal reflux and getting people off medications prevents further deficiencies such as B12 and dysbiosis issues.
Detoxification There are three issues that need to be addressed in relation to detoxification. â– The first is the fact that most people have toxicity in some form, due to either heavy-metal or pesticide burden, or as a byproduct of dysbiosis. â– The second issue is detoxification "competence." Every prostate cancer patient whom they have tested in the Amitabha clinic Cont. on Page 17

fries and plastics and methyl tert butyl ether (MTBE) found in gasoline additives. Dr. Eliaz is the physician who has done the research on the citrus pectin Pectasol, for the use of heavy metal and chemical detoxification to treat and prevent cancer. Insulin metabolism abnormalities in insulin sensitivity and glucose metabolism can drive inflammation, elevated blood sugar, immune compromise, reduced tissue oxygenation, hormone imbalance, and increased viscosity. Diet and exercise are important areas to assess and improve for normalization of weight and insulin sensitivity. Targeted multi-nutrient botanical formulas can also improve insulin sensitivity,
has defects in his ability to methylate estrogens, which can result in toxic forms of estrogen associated with a higher risk of developing cancer. ■ The third is to support the body's ability to excrete the byproducts of tumor cell death, an added burden to an already overburdened detoxification system. It is not a matter of IF we are toxic but how much. In detoxification research studies it has been found that EVERY human has six chemicals in their body: mercury, BPA, poly brominated diphenyl ethers (PDE’s) found in flame retardants, perfluorooctanoic acid found in non stick cookware, acrylamide found in coffee, french
promote lean muscle development, reduce abdominal fat, and reduce inflammation, thus taking the fuel from the flame. New research is showing that Metformin has anticancer activity in addition to its insulinsensitizing effects. Integrative Practice For those who choose to incorporate more conventional treatment options, naturopathic modalities have a crucial place in terms of preparation, sideeffect reduction, and long term wellbeing supporting cardiovascular and skeletal health, reducing hot flashes, fatigue, and depression with carefully crafted protocols. Prevention: If a man has an elevated PSA
and is in “watchful waiting” for a lowgrade prostate cancer diagnosis, naturopathic physicians have the ideal skill set to offer highly personalized care to this population, drawing on clinical experience in providing nontoxic treatment protocols and prescribing lifestyle therapies. I recommend testing for 25(OH) vitamin D levels to optimize the intake of this vitamin to prevent and treat cancer. Selenium is always part of the treatment protocol and so are high EPA/DHA fish oils. Keeping the waist below 40 inches as well as HgA1C at 5.5 is important for optimal insulin metabolism. I also educate the use of regular detoxification programs and

optimizing these pathways in the body using methylating agents such as B12 and sulphur containing nutrients. You don’t have to wait to have a problem with the prostate. There is much to do for prevention. Remember: MOVEMBER: Methylation/ detoxification; Oxidation support; Vitamins (selenium, vitamin D) Essential Fatty Acids; Metabolic support (control insulin resistance); Bowel support; Exercise; Relaxation.
