Things don’t necessarily have to be that old to interest people who work at the Chilliwack Museum and Archives, said Paul Ferguson, Heritage Collections Manager. “We are the community’s memory,” he said. He went into the Paramount building recently to save some of the cinematic memorabilia on behalf of the local museum. “It was an amazing opportunity for us to go into a place that had been largely left as is,” he said. As they came up the stairs at the old Paramount, everything in the kiosk and concession had been left as if the business would resume again in short order, right down to the bags of popcorn kernels. As Ferguson toured the old building, they picked items to save for posterity, as the building awaited demolition. “Certainly the Paramount has created good memories for people who watched some of their first films there, and all those years it was open.” The experience was similar to when he entered an old Chilliwack hops field, when the business had just shut down. Some of the larger Paramount objects now in museum storage include a film projector, theatre seats, film canisters, as well as the popcorn machine with the scoop and a bag of popcorn kernels, Slurpee and pop machines. There is even a pay phone and a section of the carpet they pulled up. “It would be impossible otherwise to acquire all of it once it was dispersed into the community or further afield. Here was an opportunity for us to pick it up and store it in Chilliwack. It will be here in perpetuity. Continued: PIECE/ p11

First Nations to challenge province’s gambling monopoly Jeff Nagel Black Press

First Nations are vowing to open their own casinos in B.C., citing the province’s refusal to share its gambling profits while continuing to expand the industry. Reser ve land in Surrey, Vancouver and the North Shore would be prime potential sites for a new aboriginal-owned casino in the Lower Mainland, according to Sto:lo Grand Chief Joe Hall, who heads the First Nations Gaming Initiative spearheading the concept. Hall said the Semiahmoo First Nation reserve east of the White Rock waterfront would be perfect. “It would be a prime location,” he said. “Because of the population and the location and because of the American traffic and the traffic

from the Island that goes east.” Hall said the Semiahmoo band has considered building a hotel/ conference centre that might also host a casino, but approval of a proposed 600-slot casino nearby in South Surrey would torpedo the band’s chances. “I understood they were pursuing that but there was no consultation with their community at all. So they were basically shut out.” Another option may be Katzie First Nation land near Fort Langley, Hall said. The South Surrey casino/ convention centre proposed by Gateway Casinos and Entertainment is just the latest irritant for aboriginal leaders, who have for years asked the province for a two to three per cent share of the $1.1 billion in annual profits B.C. reaps from gambling.

They’re Chilliwack teenagers proud to represent their country, the Fraser Valley, and the province of B.C. in a research competition. A pair of students are taking a local tourism initiative all the way to the global stage — at a conference in Monte Carlo, Monaco this week. Ashley Fisher, 17, and Megan MacDonald, 18, will represent Canada with their ‘Handpicked in the Valley’ research project at the Global Travel and Tourism Partnership (GTTP) conference, along with teacher CATT Cheryl Tourand from G.W. Graham middle-secondary. They found out in March that their case study proposal had been selected by the Canadian Academy of Travel and Tourism (CATT) to represent Canada in the competition. The students, Ashley Fisher and Megan MacDonald, chose Handpicked in the Valley, a tourism based website, as their topic to illustrate the 2012 conference theme of “innovation in tourism.” “I think the girls did an excellent job with their presentation,” said teacher Cheryl Tourand. “They defined excellence in tourism, and

they chose something that was researchable. “They made connections in the industry. Right off the bat they went above and beyond and that really shone through.” The students zeroed in on the website, Handpicked in the Valley, with its snappy tag-line “where adventures take route.” It’s an online marketing partnership by a trio of tourism organizations in Chilliwack, Abbotsford and Langley, which helps visitors and day-trippers with preplanned itinerary suggestions that are “handpicked” or creating their own day trips based on interest in events, attractions, local facilities, and accommodations. Once they get to the competition in Monaco, they’ll have an hour to present and defend their PowerPoint version, with heavy graphics and animation, along with a 50 page report. The project can then be used as a teaching tool, Tourand said. Ashley Fisher said she appreciated how the three organizations came together to make Handpicked in the Valley a reality. “It showed good community spirit and at the same time, it’s innovative,” she said. “It puts us in the spotlight and gets our name on the map.” Her research partner

Conservatives are fooling themselves if they think the private sector can deliver social programs better than governments, says Al Ens, federal NDP riding president in Chilliwack. “The Conservatives think the private sector can always do things better, but that’s just an ideological position ... it’s not science-based,” Ens said, in response to the “social finance” drive launched last week by the Conservative government in Ottawa. The idea behind social finance is to attract private investors and organizations to fund social programs and projects by offering a chance to make a profit, if agreed-upon performance targets are met. Chilliwack-Fraser Canyon MP Mark Strahl said the social finance model is working in other countries and saves taxpayers’ dollars while meeting social challenges. But Ens said he believes the idea is deadwrong, and unworkable. “Making a profit out of helping those in need ... it’s just wrong,” he said. It’s the responsibility of governments, federal, provincial and municipal to look after social needs, he said. “We need our elected officials to be responsible for assisting those in need,” he said, otherwise a “disjointed system” would result. Like the practice of using standardized tests in some U.S. public schools to measure teachers’ performance led to cheating to boost students’ scores. “That’s what would happen with this kind of (social finance) thing,” Ens warned. Investors would cut corners to make sure projects met the criteria to obtain the profit “premium” offered by the government, he believes, or invest only in projects “where the targets are easiest to be met.”

News flash: The new Port Mann bridge is open and by all reports is operating reasonably well with two lanes in each direction open for traffic. What, you knew that already? Perhaps you should tell the provincial government. Although many will welcome full operation of the bridge (eight of 10 lanes will be open on Dec. 1), there are those in Victoria who believe Metro Vancouver drivers are still ignorant of this latest development and, thus require constant reminding of its existence and its time-saving benefits. How else to explain the radio advertisements regaling motorists about the benefits of this, the largest undertaking in the $3.3-billion Port Mann Highway 1 Improvement project? Most people will have noticed by now that the long, laborious and often controversial construction project is nearing completion; they don’t need a series of advertisements — paid for with taxpayers’ dollars — to find out what is as nakedly obvious as the connection between these radio spots and the May 2013 provincial election. Still, there is a disingenuous optimism to these ads in that they hope that people will be convinced through constant repetition that the paying of tolls — no matter how odious, costly and painful to household budgets they are — will be ultimately worth it because, well, you guessed it, time will be saved. Households on both sides of the bridge will have to weigh the costs of tolls versus time-saving benefits and will decide to fork over the cash, detour to avoid them, move or change jobs. These are complex calculations that are unlikely to be affected by a series of simplistic advertisements no matter how well meaning. It’s also naive to expect these ads will change the minds of those who opposed the highway improvement project from the start. It’s highly unlikely these ads, no matter how craftily made, will encourage these folks to now suddenly champion it. Advertising can be helpful and informative but telling people what they already know is a waste of money. ~ Black Press

New life offers hope for lost urban streams

Right on the heels of the release of the Cohen Commission report into the decline of the Fraser River sockeye salmon that, Hon. Bruce Cohen wrote, face an uncertain future, record numbers of chum salmon have been returning to Still Creek in Burnaby. Given the great concern over the health of our salmon stocks in recent years, the story of the chum salmon’s return is great on several levels. Chum salmon are also known as “dog” salmon because of the large canine teeth of spawning males. They are the second largest Pacific salmon behind the Chinook. Chum can weigh in at over 18 kilograms, some 40 pounds. Found in nearly 900 coastal streams in the province, the young fry head for sea as soon as they emerge from the gravel where they spend about

four years in the ocean before returning to their birth stream to spawn. But like all salmon, returning runs are put at risk in the face of polluted water and degraded habitat, threatening the next generation. For decades Still Creek, which runs through an industrial corriMargaret dor, had the unenviable reputation EVANS of being perhaps one of the most polluted waterways in the Lower Mainland. It was the victim of runoff from heavy industrial and urban development, sewage drainage and the recipient of overflows from roads and parking lots. Fresh water life withered until one day a few people

with a vision stood at the stream bank and made a commitment for change. “I’ve been actively involved with Still Creek as a river advocate for close to four decades,” said Mark Angelo, Chair Emeritus, Rivers Institute at BCIT, and Chair and Founder of B.C. and World Rivers Day. “Still Creek is 12 kilometers in length and runs through both Vancouver and Burnaby before emptying into Burnaby Lake. From there, Burnaby Lake connects with the Brunette River which eventually runs into the Fraser in New Westminster.” Angelo said that there has been an extensive effort on the part of groups such as the BCIT Fish and Wildlife Program, the City of Burnaby, BCIT Rivers Institute, the City of Vancouver, Metro Vancouver, stream-keeper groups, and others to turn things

around. As a result, water quality improved noticeably in recent years. Both in-stream and streamside habitat were enhanced and an improved fish ladder was installed downstream at the outlet of Burnaby Lake. The dedicated effort paid off. Young school children learning about salmon life cycles can now see for themselves the results of stream conser vation while seniors, who may not have seen returning salmon to local streams in decades, can enjoy the spectacle once more. These eye-witnessing results serve to foster stream rehabilitation in other areas. “It has been so exciting to the see the first major chum salmon run return to Still Creek in many, many decades, perhaps going back 80 to 90 years,” said Angelo. “For many locals, this might be their first experience seeing

And after witnessing something like this so close to home, I think many will look at urban streams in a whole different light.” The salmon have been seen in large numbers along the Burnaby stretch of Still Creek and up tributaries such as Beecher Creek. They have been very visible in the main stem of the creek, especially where it parallels Grandview. Angelo predicts they may even make it as far upstream as Renfrew ravine. “From my perspective, to see this once severely damaged stream come back to life highlights the fact that, if there is a will, and a plan is put in place and adhered to, then we can turn things around,” said Angelo. “We should never give up on any river.”

Keep downtown’s historic character After reading the “City moves to expropriate the Irwin Block,” (Chilliwack Progress, Nov. 8) out of curiosity I went online and had a peek at the plan at chilliwackdowntownplan.ca. I was motivated by the illustrated image of the site with the structure that will replace the Irwin — a six-storey concrete office block. I’ve always admired the Irwin, one of the few old structures left in Chilliwack, and lamented its neglect. I’ve lived in Chilliwack for six years, and this building is the only remnant left that tells me anything about how our downtown appeared in the past. I

moved from Calgary where in the 1970s many beautiful and very interesting old buildings were torn down. With the outspoken protests of long term residents, The City of Calgary finally put a halt to this, and had another long look at its history and chose to rebuild the old buildings now lining the pedestrian mall, but left the old façades in place. This was a brilliant solution for keeping the historic buildings that gave Calgary its downtown character and soul. It would be so nice if the City of Chilliwack kept the old façade of the Irwin, or built a new build-

ing that reflected the architecture of the original structure. A lower building of three stories might also be considered, with residences above commercial – similar to Garrison village. A generic six-storey concrete building will only increase the ghettoization of our downtown, casting a long, cold shadow on an empty Yale Road, green roof or not. No one is going to want to live beside this building in the residences slated for this downtown plan.

Kinder Morgan pipeline poses unacceptable risk mean considering the hazards they face. We, in the Fraser Valley, have been reminded by recent nearby earthquakes that we are located on a particularly dangerous fault and that we are expecting “the big one” any day. I doubt that it is even possible to build pipelines to withstand such an event. What about the huge holding tanks necessary to store the bitumen prior to loading tankers? They would be vulnerable to

such quakes as well as tsunamis. Anyone who watched the tsunami in Japan saw how it totally destroyed everything in its path. If huge concrete nuclear reactors were severely damaged, how would flimsy holding tanks fare? Can Mark Strahl guarantee that we won’t face a superstorm like Sandy that carried a 170-foot water tanker a mile to deposit it on the beach at Staten Island? How would an oil tanker fare

‘Stick to your knitting’ I may not be an expert on the Holy Book, but I should know a thing or two about education. In fact I’ve been there and done that. Alas, our education system is adrift. Ouch! We’re mediocre at best. Now, the most important responsibility and solemn duty of any school board is students’ academic achievement, namely to prepare every child ready for college or career. That is not happening. Close to a third of our third graders are not mastering literacy and numeracy. As a result, the graduation rate is barely 70 per cent. Our aboriginal children have fared even worse. Now, that’s worth getting

angry about. In an officially secular school system such as ours, sending Bibles home will make more sense if people were actually able to read them. After all, as it stands more than 40 per cent of adults struggle with low literacy skills, according to Literacy BC. Their big problem was in grade school. Literacy skills are to a large extent acquired there. My advice to the guardians of the system is to stick to their knitting and stay out of all the hot-button issues, which should remain as the parents’ call. Professional response earns parent’s praise Wednesday morning my 15-month-old son was playing in the bathroom at our house when he accidently locked himself inside. After a bit of panic, and the door not able to be unlocked from the outside I decided I would call our fire department. I was more than happy when they arrived in less than 10 minutes to let my little one out of the bathroom. After all their trouble they apologized to me for having to take the handle off my door! I just want to say how thankful I am for the wonderful fireman and firewoman who came to our rescue! They even had a stuffed Dalmatian for my son. How wonderful it is to have such great men and woman there in a time of need, big or in this case, small. I did not get the names of these kind people, but want to send out a thank-you.

Chilliwack Chiefs in nation’s ninth spot Chiefs from Front Chilliwack is getting it done at both ends of the ice this season. The team’s stingy defence yields a league-low 2.48 goals per game while scoring 3.43 per game. The Chiefs have three players (Luke Esposito, Josh Hansen and Austin Plevy) within the top 10 in BCHL scoring. Hansen, a 20-year-old Chilliwack kid in his final season, leads the entire league in goals with 18. The Canadian Junior Hockey League released their national rankings Monday, a list of the top 20 squads from Canada’s 10 junior A leagues. Chilliwack is up to ninth spot. They are the topranked BCHL team, ahead of the Victoria Grizzlies (11th) and Penticton Vees (15th). It has been a long, long time coming, but it seems this hockey team was well worth the wait.

“Because once this stuff is gone, it’s gone,” Ferguson says. One of the plum objects for the museum pickers was one of the original Paramount film projectors. “We were trying to collect the things that epitomized the use of the building, so the projector was one of them.” They found out through research it that the theatre used a three-tiered platter system, as a labour saving device. The movie screen, although small by today’s standards, was once considered quite large. “That was a big screen in its day.” In an “ideal world” they would have taken out the entire concession stand, right down to the counters, popcorn warming machine and ratty old carpet. That’s what it takes to get the details exactly right. But there wasn’t enough to room at the museum to store it all. “But those types of items are all part of recreating the ambiance. How many first dates occurred here at the Paramount I wonder? It was a wonderful theatre the way it was designed. “So what does the Paramount repre-

sent? It was an icon in North America for its time when the theatres represented the movie companies.” Going out to see a film at the cinema was often a special weekend outing for local families. “Today we take it for granted,” said Ferguson. He remembered movies from his own childhood, transported in the family Volvo station wagon for an experience that included a movie and dinner at a Chinese restaurant. “I’ve always been interested in film.” One day Chilliwack residents might come across these special artifacts in a museum display featuring old theatres of downtown, for example. “If my job gets people to reminisce about seeing films at the

Filling an empty bowl is the perfect metaphor for a group of Chilliwack

grandmothers trying to raise funds for African grandmothers left to care for grandchildren orphaned by AIDS. “In the last few years,

the media spotlight has dimmed on the HIV/ AIDS epidemic,” says grandmother Doreen Morrey, coordinator of the Chilliwacky Gogos.

“And sadly, as a result, funding for grassroots HIV/AIDS programs is dropping off. So it’s all the more important for those of us with abun-

dant resources to do whatever little bit we can.” Chilliwack women from Sardis, Ryder Lake and Yarrow have

united as the Chilliwacky Gogos, and are working with local potters on a unique fundraising effort, The Empty Bowl Fundraiser, on Sunday,

Nov. 25. “Africa’s grandmothers have become the heart of the response to the HIV/AIDS pandemic,” said Ariel Eastman, another local Gogo. “As groups of grandmothers across Canada, we are finding our collective voice and are advocating for increased awareness of our challenges and the resources available, including financial support.” For $25 donors receive an African clothwrapped bowl handmade by local potters. The bowl will be filled with hearty, homemade soup made with local organic vegetables, with other delicious treats. Look for a handicrafts sale, with 100% of the proceeds going to the African grandmothers. There are over 240 “gogo” groups across the countr y, with Chilliwack’s being one of the most recent to be formed. Since 2006 these busy, committed elders have raised more than $16.5 million for the Stephen Lewis Foundation Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign. “When we came up with the idea for the Empty Bowl Fundraiser, we pitched it to the local potters, and the response has been tremendous!” said Sally Lum, grandmother of two. “It’s always heartwarming to find such solid community support and generosity for a cause that we need to keep in our hearts and minds.” Local potters who donated bowls include: Solstice Potter y, Greendale Potter y, Wilson Road Pottery, Schellenberg Pottery, Driediger Pottery, R. Skene and Venema Potters, Fieldstone Pottery, Pottery by Kelly and Inspired Arts and Gifts. Check them out in the annual Yarrow Christmas Craft Crawl Nov. 22-25. Taking aim at border security Greg Knill

The Progress When Canada Border Services officer Lori Bowcock was shot and wounded during a border incident four weeks ago, classes at the CBSA’s training facility in Chilliwack were cut short. Continuing the scenario-based firearms training while a colleague was being airlifted to hospital, wasn’t an option, said Dan Desai, the facility’s chief of training and learning. Instead, students were sent home, counseling made available, and instructors gathered in the lounge to watch newscasts. “It was like an attack on a member of our family,” explained Brian McKenna, use-of-force instructor at the Chilliwack centre. Bowcock – shot in the neck at the Peace Arch crossing by a man who then turned the gun on himself – survived the incident. But in Chilliwack, it brought home the deadly seriousness of the training that almost 50 Canada Border Service officers undergo daily at Canada Education Park. The firearms training is relatively new. It’s only been six years since the federal government allowed Canadian border guards to carry firearms – a reflection of the agency’s changing role, and the complexities of international affairs following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Since then Canada has embarked on a program to train and equip all its officers by 2016. The Chilliwack facility is responsible for training and recertifying officers from across the province. The program consists of two key components: control defensive tactics, and firearm training. The goal of both is to diffuse potentially serious situations, while maintaining officer safety at all times. “We have to keep ourselves safe so we can keep the public safe,” said McKenna. Training takes place in a couple of locations at Canada Education Park, which is also home to the University of the Fraser Valley, Justice Institute of B.C. and the RCMP’s Pacific Regional Training Centre. The sprawling main building houses a lecture theatre, classroom and administrative space, and areas where students can practice the physically demanding techniques of subduing resistant individuals. The role of Canada Border Service personnel in the field is a complex one, Desai pointed out. While most people may only encounter officers at a border crossing, their duties take them far beyond that. The members, who carry the same authority as police, can be boarding vessels at sea, inspecting shipping containers at port, or apprehending individuals inland who are in Canada illegally. In the three months between April and June of this year, the agency intercepted nearly $103 million

in illegal dugs, most of it cocaine. It also confiscated 140 firearms and nearly 2,000 weapons of other types. CBSA officers removed from Canada nearly 4,000 people, denied entry to another 14,291, and recovered seven missing children. It’s that diversity that makes Canada Border Services such a dynamic profession, said Desai. It’s also what makes the training so important. Students at the Chilliwack facility train for real-life situations, sometimes using a virtual world. The “Professional Range Instructor Simulator,” or PRISim, uses screen projections, lasers, and a computer interface to create scenarios that test student reaction and judgement. The scenarios, written to reflect real CBSA incidents, help students ana-

lyze threats and react appropriately – all in a split second. Just as important, the students have to then explain what they did and why. “The articulation of the decisionmaking process is very important,” Desai said. The system may look like a giant video game, but there is nothing playful about the training. The weapons used are exactly like the weapons officers carry in the field – a semiautomatic Beretta – only they fire a beam of light instead of a bullet. It has the same weight, the same feel. And students are expected to treat it exactly as they would a operating firearm. The idea, said Desai, is to build the “muscle memory” so proper handling becomes instinctive.

“The technique needs to be second nature,” he says. Not all the training is done in a virtual setting. Scenario-based training also takes place in a nearby vacant building that has been modified to reflect situations the students will encounter. Here, the handguns fire f/x charges, while instructors watch and grade from observation platforms above. Live-fire training takes place in a recently constructed indoor firing range. “It’s an amazing piece of technology,” said Desai. The facility, made from repurposed steel shipping containers, is virtually sound proof from the outside. Inside, the eerie stillness is barely broken by the sharp report of a firearm. Bullet-proof glass separates the range from the control room

where the instructor watches and evaluates. The students are marked for more than just accuracy. “There are dozens and dozens of aspects they are being judged and evaluated on at the range,” said Desai, including their demeanor, attitude and overall weapon handling. The firearm may be the sharp end of the stick in the CBSA arsenal, but it isn’t the only tool at the officers, disposal, McKenna emphasizes. Key to the overall training is matching the threat to a response. “Our job isn’t to shoot people,” he said, “it’s to remove the threat. Often the officer’s best weapon is an ability communicate, counsel, and calm a dangerous situation. “We’re really good at talking to people,” he said. ❖

The Chilliwack Craft Crawl is juried each year to represent a mix of unique, local products with a wide variety of items and something different featured from stop to stop. The Craft Crawl artists, and business owners will again be supporting “Ruth and Naomi’s Mission” through donations. Visitors are encouraged to make a difference in helping out this worthwhile local cause. In

Reaching year 10 for any event is an accomplishment in itself. With humble beginnings, a small group of Women owners of boutique style home-based businesses got together in 2002, to create a Christmas Craft Crawl event that not only introduced new women’s artistic business ventures to the community each year, but also provided opportunities for networking and cross-promotion year round. Ten years later, the Chilliwack Craft Crawl continues to grow, seeking out the very best selection of artisanal home-based businesses and crafters in our community, adding new faces, guest artists and new crafts each year. The Chilliwack Craft Crawl, which covers eight stops, plus five additional guest artists through Sardis and Greendale this year, has grown in popularity to the point that “Early Bird Thursday” has now been added. Offering an extra day of shopping the Crawl, as well as a chance to beat the crowds and get first pick at the terrific selection of local crafts, visitors will also find door prizes at every location – and extra draws on Early Bird Thursday. Add to that, refreshments at every stop and the huge grand prize gift basket, it’s no wonder this free event is so popular! New to the 10th Annual Chilliwack Craft Crawl this year is the Syixcha’awt Gift Shop of Sto:lo Artists, a quaint new galler y representing over 100 First Nations artisans. There will be feature Artists on site to demo, and traditional refreshments to sample. A favourite lunch stop, the Little Beetle Bistro, is back, hosting guest artists Carla Swope Jewels and Kimberley Francis local grain: custom woodwork. Greendale Pottery will be hosting two guest artisans, with Greendale Herb & Vine’s artisanal food products as

The smart choice for a safe ride home: Operation Red Nose Volunteers needed as busy season nears Operation Red Nose is gearing up with the help of dedicated volunteers to make the roads safer in Chilliwack this holiday season. From Nov. 30 to Dec. 31, 2012, the red vested volunteers will be on the road to help people who feel unfit to drive get home safely in their own car. This year the Kiwanis Club of Sardis is coordinating the service, with the help of volunteers from the community. The previous eight years were coordinated by Chilliwack Restorative Justice. Last year, the service provided over 700 safe rides home in Chilliwack. During this year’s campaign, the Operation Red Nose volunteers, headquartered in downtown Chilliwack, will be taking calls from partygoers with one goal in mind: to make roads and highways safer for everyone. The Operation Red Nose service is free, and is entirely provided by volunteers, and donations are always accepted. “One hundred percent of the client donations are given to local non-profit organizations that support youth and/or amateur sports. Every year, more than $1,300,000 is returned to these organizations across Canada,” declares Jean-Marie De Koninck, Founding President of Operation Red Nose. regaining the lead with just one second on the clock. Hills drove wide on Express D-man Cal Hofford and put a sharp-angle backhander on net. Huggins blockered the rebound right to Donohoe, who buried the biscuit for his seventh of the year. Shots on goal through 20 minutes favoured the Chiefs 17-6. Chilliwack broke it open in the second period, with Hills in the

middle of all the action. A Hills rush led to Chilliwack’s third goal at 9:41. The 20-year-old took a Jaret Babych pass crossing the Coquitlam blueline, darted in and put a shot on net. The puck squirted out to the side, where Chiefs captain David Thompson lifted a sharp-angle shot through a crowded crease for his fourth of the year. Chilliwack’s big line

kept things rolling late in the period. Plevy took one for the team when he was driven into the boards from behind by Express D-man Mark Begert. He made Coquitlam pay on the power play, finding Hansen with a perfect centering pass. Hansen roofed it for his team and league-leading 18th. The shot clock wasn’t quite as one-sided in period two, but Chilliwack out-shot the

Express 14-10. The Chiefs kept coming in period three, adding to their lead at 3:34 on a goal by Donohoe. The 20-year-old chased down a puck in the Coquitlam zone, pulled it inside on Express blueliner Brett Seldon and squeezed a shot through the legs of Huggins for his second of the game and eighth of the year. His strike marked the end of Huggins’ night as he gave way to

backup Daniel Urbani. The Chiefs got no more goals, but Thompson added an exclamation point with four minutes left, pummeling Coquitlam’s Brandon Morley in a one-sided scrap. UFV basketball women take down Thunderbirds

The University of the Fraser Valley basketball teams walked into UBC’s War Memorial Gymnasium, the traditional mecca of univer-

sity hoops in this province, and made a compelling case that they’re now the standard-bearer among B.C. schools. The Cascades women, ranked No. 2 in the nation, found themselves favoured against UBC for the first time in their seven-year tenure in the Canada West conference. They made good on the advance billing, blowing out the No. 10-ranked Thunderbirds 76-48 on Friday, and outlasting them 88-82 in a doubleovertime thriller on Saturday.

The No. 8-ranked UFV men faced a tough test, as their UBC counterparts came in ranked No. 1 in Canada. The T-Birds won Friday’s opener 76-71, but the Cascades bounced back for a huge 89-77 upset victory on Saturday. “It means a lot to us,” said UFV women’s head coach Al Tuchscherer, reflecting on the weekend. “Being new to Canada West and the CIS, we’ve always been trying to prove ourselves. UBC is kind of the big dog

on the block, and I think it shows how far both of our programs have come.” Just six games into the season, the undefeated Cascades women have done a lot of the heavy lifting towards clinching first place in the Pacific Division. They’ve already swept their season series against chief rivals UBC and UVic – those teams are currently tied for second at 4-2. UFV led by two at halftime on Friday, then out-scored the T-Birds

26-9 in the third quarter to kick-start the blowout. Chilliwack’s Sarah Wierks paced the offence with 16 points, while Aieisha Luyken (Mission, 15 points), Nicole Wierks (Chilliwack, 14) and Cour tney Bar tel (Chilliwack, 13) also scored in double figures. UBC offered stiffer resistance on Saturday, building a five-point lead heading into the fourth quarter. The Cascades rallied, though, and actually had a chance to win in regulation,

but Chilliwack’s Kayli Sartori saw her layup rim out at the buzzer. The T-Birds controlled the first OT, but Luyken’s buzzer-beating put-back forced a second extra session, and UFV pulled away in the second OT. The Cascades struggled with their perimeter shooting, going just 2-for-16 from beyond the arc, but they outrebounded UBC by a 52-37 margin. Nicole Wierks scored a team-high 21 points, while Luyken registered 16. Three

players posted doubledoubles – Sarah Wierks (13 points and 14 rebounds), Bartel (13 and 11) and Sartori (12 and 11). Kris Young led the way for UBC with 26 points and nine rebounds. “Our second game, I didn’t think we were really where we needed to be,” Tuchscherer said. “We were caught standing around a lot. But it’s better to earn the ‘W’ and learn lessons than have it bite you, which it almost did.”

BUTCHART Iris Elizabeth

(nee Sterling) Aug. 1, 1925 - Nov. 14, 2012 Iris passed away peacefully November 14, 2012 at the age of 87 years surrounded by her loving BUTCHART family. Iris is survived by her children: Jody (Stan), Gaye (Jeff), Dennis (Janice), and Jana (Loyd); grandchildren: Michael (Morag), Colleen (Jason), Carolyn, Andrea, Breanna, Bryce, Kendall, Devan, Kelly (Mike), Matthew (Ashley); sister Diana (Ron) and many nieces and nephews. Iris was predeceased by her beloved husband Len and her six siblings. Iris was Albert and Elizabeth Sterlingâ€™s third child of eight. She grew up in Shellbrook, Saskatchewan and graduated from high school in 1943. That September she entered St.Paulâ€™s hospital nursing program in Saskatoon and graduated as an RN in May 1946. Iris was a gifted nurse and received the General Proficiency award for her class. After working in Saskatchewan she set off for the west coast with plans to go onto Hawaii. While working at Chilliwack General Hospital, Len Butchart set eyes on her and they fell in love. They married in September 1950. Iris left nursing in 1951 to be at home with her children. In 1967 mom returned to nursing at the Chilliwack General Hospital and continued to practice until 1989. Nursing was a passion for Iris but nothing made her happier than having her family near her. Her family was her pride and joy and she also cherished her special times with her friends. Iris also enjoyed walking, skating, dancing, biking, golf, bowling, bridge, baking, sewing, and knitting. She was an incredible mother and grandmother, we will miss her dearly. A â€œCelebration of Lifeâ€? will be held at Hendersonâ€™s Funeral Home in Chilliwack on Saturday, November 24, 2012 at 2 pm. Tea will follow. Irisâ€™s family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to the staff of the Cascade Lodge. The affection for mom and the exceptional care will always be remembered. Iris will live on in the hearts of her family and all those whose lives she touched during her full life. Mom was born on February 11, 1928 in Holland. Jane is survived by her loving husband of 63 years, Steffen Elgersma; their children Elisabeth (Gerrit) Apperloo and their two children; Metske (Janna) Elgersma and their ten children; Annetta (Ed) Ooms and their two children; Daniel (Sheri) Elgersma and their four children; and forty-two great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her special niece, Elizabeth Hoekstra-VanderVlis; brother Andries (Hiltje) Hoekstra of The Netherlands; sister, Tina Postma of The Netherlands, and Nancy (Bill) Kelder of Hope, BC; and numerous extended family and friends. Jane is predeceased by her son, Andy Elgersma; brothers: Hielke Hoekstra, Sietse Hoekstra and Dubbelt Hoekstra. A private graveside service was held on Monday, November 19, 2012 in Chilliwack and officiated by Pastor Peter Laurie, followed by a Celebration of Life Service at First Avenue Christian Assembly officiated by Pastor Michell Belobaba and Pastor Elmer Martin. (nee Dornan) May 27, 1946 - Nov. 11, 2012 With sadness we announce the passing of Margaret at Lions Gate Hospital in North Vancou- McALISTER ver. Beloved bride of Wilf, sister of John (Beverly) and cherished mother of Joanne and Duncan (Jennifer), Margaret may best be remembered as devoted â€˜Glammaâ€™ or â€˜Nammyâ€™ to her grandsons: Patrick (Liz) and James; and granddaughters: Anna, Maggie and Ruby. She was also delighted to marry into Wilfâ€™s loving family and gain even more beautiful grandchildren. She was tremendously proud of her children and grateful for their love and support. She shared a long and tender courtship with Wilf and they enjoyed golfing, sailing and travelling together. Margaret had a knack for friendship and dearly loved her â€˜posseâ€™, her friends from Sears, Eatons, Beechwood and the many people she charmed throughout her life. She lit up any room she entered with her spirit and joy and people were drawn to her beautiful smile. Her enthusiasm was infectious and her children and grandchildren will remember many adventures, especially the ones where they â€˜made lemonade from lemons.â€™ They will also remember her bright red fingernails, her insistence that they answer â€˜yesâ€™ (not â€˜yeahâ€™), her tea parties, her fervent desire that they â€˜get a haircutâ€™ and her fun, can-do attitude. McDONALD Harry

Harry Ronald McDonald passed away on Tuesday, November 13, 2012 at Norman Manor in Chilliwack, BC at the age of 96. McDONALD He was born on October 19, 1916 in Ellice Municipality, Manitoba Harry is survived by his three sons, Ron (Sue) and Barry (Sherry) of Chilliwack and Robert (Helen) of Nanaimo; seven grandchildren: Brandon, Wyatt, Ben, Melissa, Jay, Chris and Kim: and one great-grandson, Clayton. Harry was predeceased by his wife Zona in 1993 and his six sisters: Ruth, Edith, Viola, Dorothy, Wilma and Eva; and two brothers: Charlie and Mervin. He is survived by one brother Glen of Moosomin, Sask. Harry grew up on a farm in Birtle, Manitoba and loved working with horses. He played baseball and hockey when farm work allowed a bit of free time. Harry service in the army for four years during WWII and told numerous stories of survival, hardship and loss as well as close camaraderie. He moved to Chilliwack in 1946 where he began an ice delivery business and later

owned and operated McDonaldâ€™s Grocery and Service Station on Young Road. After retirement, Harry worked for Valley Dairy Equipment and Meadowlands Golf course. That still left time for hunting and fishing and Harry had many â€œsecretâ€? fishing spots. He appreciated family gatherings and was a regular customer at Banners Restaurant. At his request, no service will be held. The family wishes to thank the staff at Norman Manor for their care and kind support. Harry will be dearly missed by all who loved him as a wonderful Dad, Grandpa, Brother, Uncle and Friend. MOORE Myrna

(nee Musselman) â€œMrs. Goodeyâ€? After a very long courageous battle with multiple health issues, Myrna Moore passed away on November 16, 2012. MOORE Myrna was born in Wilkie, Saskatchewan on July 22, 1938 and moved with her family to Chilliwack in 1941 where she spent the rest of her life. Her early married life was spent in community service on behalf of her four children: Barbara Cunningham, Loyal Goodey, Brenda McKinney, and Geneva Reynen. One of her proudest moments was being honoured as â€œMother of the Yearâ€? in 1977. Myrna was very involved in St. Patâ€™s Circle and St. Maryâ€™s Catholic Womenâ€™s League which led into her catering career. After many years as co-owner of TopNotch Catering, Myrna operated the Cafeteria at Sardis Senior Secondary School for 12 years. During this time she also ran St. Maryâ€™s Bingo which brought her great joy and satisfaction. Myrna enjoyed playing bridge and treasured all of her many cardplaying friends. As we all know, Myrnaâ€™s main goal in life was to â€œfeed the hungryâ€?. She did this not only with delicious food, but with her generosity, loving spirit and warm hospitality. One of her first thoughts of the day was always â€œWhat will I make Larry for dinner tonightâ€?? Left to mourn are her devoted husband of 26 years, Larry Moore, her sisters Myrt Armstrong and Pat Reid and her brother Bob Musselman; her four children, four stepchildren, 12 grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. â€œCha-Chaâ€? has made her last apple pie but has left us with a legacy of love, faithfulness and strong Catholic faith.
