In 2008, Jubilee Park in downtown Abbotsford was rife with daytime drug deals, homeless people sleeping on the ground, and addicts smoking crack and shooting up. Needles, used condoms and human excrement littered the park and, although overgrown vegetation hid some of the view, the site was a depressing urban blight. The area drew heavily on police resources, often prompted by calls from the public. Abbotsford Police Sgt. Doug Sage wanted to make changes. He saw Jubilee Park as the living room of a big house – a place for people to hang out as long as they didn’t leave behind a big mess. He became the supervisor in charge of the bike squad – a team of five police officers who patrol the downtown core’s alleys and side streets on mountain bikes. Now, Sage is being recognized for his work in cleaning up the park and other areas of the downtown core. At the police board meeting on Nov. 27, he will be presented with the Abbotsford Policing Award for Outstanding Community Service Award.

An Abbotsford couple whose house was destroyed by a chimney fire on Nov. 11 will have a new home, thanks to an outpouring of public support. The Abbotsford Firefighters Charitable Society and the Abbotsford Police Union met on Saturday with Bill and Ann Connor, who lost their home on Downes Road. Bill has lived on the property since he was two years old. The two organizations are now co-ordinating donations for the couple, who did not have insurance to cover damage or repair costs. Const. Ian MacDonald said the Connors, both in their 80s, had been fielding a number of offers from businesses and individuals wanting to help, but it was difficult for them to determine which ones were appropriate. MacDonald said the co-ordinators are now focusing only on volunteer offers and donated items – nothing with strings or money attached. Those offers have been numerous. “There have been many moments where our members who are close to this have become very emotional in response to the generosity,” he said. Two businesses have paid for the Connors to stay in a hotel suite for a month, after their

emergency accommodation funding ran out on the weekend. Another business has donated appliances, and a woman offered to give the couple her motor home. Numerous donations have also been made of furniture, clothing, building supplies and labour. MacDonald said many skilled tradespeople > AL >> – such as electricians, painters and ORIGINroofers – have volunteered to help rebuild the home. He said the groups are awaiting the results of engineering reports to determine whether the home can be gutted and rebuilt from the foundation, or whether it needs to be demolished. Crews plan to be on scene on Wednesday to help with clean-up efforts. MacDonald said coordinators will have a better idea at that time of what personal items the couple can salvage from the home, and what items they might still require. He said the goal is to have a new home for the couple and the replacement of their necessities without having to dip into a trust fund that was formed by friends of the Connors. ‘Heroes’ honoured

Abbotsford is a city filled with community heroes, and last Thursday night their efforts were celebrated. The inaugural City of Heroes awards ceremony took place at W.J. Mouat Secondary School as four schools and 21 individuals received recognition for their efforts to make Abbotsford a “city of character.” The event, sponsored by Thrifty Foods, Mouat and the Abbotsford News, was hosted in conjunction with the Abbotsford City of Character. The City of Character movement began in 2006, when three local school representatives went to a character conference in Toronto. In 2011, community leaders in Abbotsford established six values, followed by an official Abbotsford Character Council. The six values are respect, responsibility, integrity, empathy, courage and service. The City of Heroes awards honours groups and individuals that promote those values. The four school awards were: Elementary School Project Award – Mt. Lehman Elementary School The school was recognized for its Character Project and Club, which includes each classroom presenting a different character value at assemblies throughout the year. The project educates the student population about the importance of character. Middle School Project Award – Chief Dan George Middle School After attending last month’s

youth symposium on character, a group of Chief Dan George students came up with the concept of a “Nerd Day.” The event encouraged other students to act with good character emphasizing that being smart is cool. High School Project Award – Rick Hansen Secondary School Students at Rick Hansen have developed a school newspaper. The project allows students to share their thoughts and interests with their peers. Independent Educational Project Award – Abbotsford Youth Commission The commission’s youth council was recognized for creating a series of bullying awareness seminars and presenting them to middle schools throughout Abbotsford. Each school will receive a plaque and $200 to help fund their programs. An additional 21 awards were given out to individuals who have shown leadership and character in this community. They were: Loree Mann, Gail Smit, Brian Lee, Rien and Katherine Westendorp, Lee Graham, Franke Roffel, Toni Goode, Dene Senft, Riley Payne, Megan Hartle, David Collins, Nathan Fehr, Sekoia Laliberte, Leslie Betker, Colin McGuinness, Steve Gill, Jim Calamunce, Pat Mullaney, Stella Manuel, Jack Siebert and Donna Elliott. Pipe Up maintains that dilbit is a greater threat to the environment than conventional oil. Hale noted the Trans Mountain Pipeline passes near 98 streams and rivers as it makes its way to the coast. In Abbotsford, it runs close to Auguston Traditional elementary. Students there were sent home after some felt sick from the smell from a spill at the Sumas Mountain tank farm earlier this year. Oil was contained to the site. Hale said the 60-year-old line also runs relatively close to Sandy Hill elementary and the Abbotsford Christian school campus, but he is not sure parents who send their children to those schools are aware of that. “Our mission is to be informed – inform ourselves and our communities as much as we can,” said Hale. Greg Toth, Kinder Morgan’s project director, said public consultation is part of the application process, along with an environmental assessment and other requirements directed by the National Energy Board (NEB). He noted the Enbridge Northern Gateway project to build a pipeline from Edmonton to Kitimat has raised the profile of pipeline issues, and prompted demonstrations at the provincial legislature in Victoria. Oil spills like the one in Kalamazoo make pipelines controversial. “We get tarred with the same brush,” said

Toth. “We do have a long operating history in B.C., and we have a very good safety record that stands on its own.” In Abbotsford there is 29.7 km of pipeline, a pump station on Sumas Prairie and a tank farm on Sumas Mountain. With the upgrade, a seventh tank would be needed at the tank farm, and a second pump station would be constructed at the Sumas site – a $30-million facility. Toth said the common refrain that “B.C. takes all the risk and Alberta gets the benefit” is not true. Of the $4.3 billion cost of the project, $2.6 billion will be spent in B.C., and the rest in Alberta. Over the life of the project (2012 to 2048), for construction and operation, it will create 27,000 person-years of employment in B.C. and 11,500 in Alberta. Most of the jobs are in construction. Once built, the project would create 65 new operational jobs, and 35 of those would be in B.C. Kinder Morgan pays approximately $2 million in taxes to the city of Abbotsford each year for these utilities, and that would rise to about $3.18 million with the expansion. Over the life of the project the federal government would earn an estimated $811 million in tax revenue, and the provincial government $320 million. Toth said the tar sands oil will find its way to the market one way or another, and maintains the pipeline is the safest and most efficient way to transport oil. A second local session will be held on Thursday Nov. 29 at Straiton Community Hall (4698 Upper Sumas Mountain Rd.) from 5-8 p.m.

It was then ignited by a heater, according to police, and the flames spread to the victim. Ashby was arrested in Mission about two hours later. An Abbotsford man has now been charged following a fire that occurred after an apparent fight with his brother. James Ashby, 34, was charged with arson and aggravated assault. Time to change pot laws Marijuana reform advocates hope Washington and Colorado states’ recent vote to legalize and tax marijuana sales will add momentum to their push for change in B.C. Washington state estimates it would collect $560 million in the first year from a 25-per-cent tax on the sale of regulated marijuana through authorized stores. If enacted, this could also cause a partial collapse of B.C.’s estimated $7-billion-a-year illegal pot industry, as growers relocate to the U.S. to avoid the need to smuggle. Recently, the Union of B.C. Municipalities passed a resolution calling for marijuana to be decriminalized. They’d rather pot be regulated and taxed instead. The U.S. votes are a progressive move toward responsible marijuana use. It’s time for B.C. to take a similar step toward decriminalization, if not legalization of marijuana. The potential tax revenue and the opportunity

to reduce law enforcement costs, and help unclog our court system is compelling. The poll results south of the border sent a message that U.S. drug policies are not working. Ours aren’t working either. Sensible B.C., a campaign headed by B.C. marijuana activist and medical pot dispenser Dana Larsen, aims to get enough signatures on a petition to force a provincial referendum on marijuana decriminalization, through B.C.’s Recall and Initiative Act. The proposed Sensible Policing Act would block B.C. police from spending time or resources on searches, seizures or arrests for simple cannabis possession. It’s time we take our antiquated marijuana laws and follow the lead of our neighbours to the south and let the people decide if it’s time for a change. – The Burnaby Newsleader

Other Hand Despite not having been a huge (or even small for that matter) football fan, it was still disappointing that the BC Lions fell short last weekend. The reason being is that the Grey Cup is always held on or close to my birthday, and since there is little to celebrate the passing of my chronological time, the football game at least brought some interest to that annual event. I have however, attended a number of Lions games, back in days of the cold, though perhaps traditional, Empire Stadium and then later in B.C. Place – admittedly only when the offer of free tickets came my way. I also remember a particularly

frigid evening when I was invited to the Shrine Bowl, again at Empire, by a friend who was the coach of an Abbotsford high school team. Can’t remember if we won or not, since it was so long ago the coach – an insurance agent who hailed from Texas – said he’d return to his native land if British Columbia ever “nationalized” car insurance. We got ICBC, the Lone Star State got its boy back, and I’m still not sure if that was a win or a loss for us. So, despite lacking in football fervor, I do hold a certain affection for the game, and will miss, at least this year, not seeing even briefly B.C.’s team challenging for a repeat of last year’s Grey Cup win. Despair not, however, for a lack of “championship” titles on the gridiron in a province known across the nation as one of conundrums. Abbotsford this past week became home of the Lingerie Football cup, though the name of that trophy escapes me at the moment (C-Cup, D-Cup, perhaps?). Not that I follow the on-field

demonstrations of pigskin prowess, obviously displayed along with a lot of other skin, at the Abbotsford Sports and Entertainment Centre, but I did see thanks to Facebook a photo of the game, shot from one end zone and revealing the “crowd” in the other.

... for us to win in Abbotsford, we may have to lose on professional sports viewing opportunities. If success is based on the number (or more appropriate, the lack thereof) of people who appeared to be in paid attendance, I’d suggest city council better keep relying on facility rentals for bikini ball rather than switch to attendance revenues to help pay off the debt on that facility. On the other hand, it does appear there is a surging interest in

hockey which, if the NHL lockout continues, might at least reduce the city’s financial commitment to the owner/operators of the Heat. The big question, of course, is whether or not that brand of hockey can maintain fan interest, and Abbotsford’s financial relief, when Gary Bettman and pro hockey players come to terms. The irony, though, much as I mentioned last week about the possible banning of wood-burning fireplaces by Metro Vancouver when at the same time they want to incinerate more than 500,000 tonnes of garbage each year, is that for us to win in Abbotsford we may have to lose on professional sports viewing opportunities. So, on Nov. 25, rather than turning on the TV to support B.C. in the 100th anniversary of the Grey Cup in Toronto, I’ll be sitting at home reviewing my own past life, and clinging very tenaciously to the hope that well into the future I might also find celebration in 100 years of history. markrushton@abbynews.com

Go back to planning city budget based on needs Have we missed something? In an era of fiscal restraint where Mayor Banman has said civic spending is about needs versus wants, now there’s a call to spend $17.5 million for the YMCA. The YMCA has had a great record of providing for communities around the world and if the City of Abbotsford could afford to give them the money, it would be a great asset.

However, we can’t afford it right now. City staff have been clear that to have the YMCA come to Abbotsford now means the roads, buildings, and other infrastructure we presently own will not be maintained to current standards. And what about this $17.5 million? The mayor goes on that this is “50-cent dollars.” What rubbish! It is about our elected officials giving

money to the YMCA without us owning a thing. What happens if the YMCA runs at a loss? Will they then ask the city for a topup to keep their operations going? Meanwhile, would recreation services at the ARC and MRC be cut? Suppose the YMCA pulls the plug on the project and sells the building. What would happen to the taxpayers’ $17.5 million investment?

Zoos are akin to prisons

Re: Nov. 13 editorial Thank you so much for stating your opinion on the archaic practice of zoos. I have long held the belief that animals do not belong in zoos, which are akin to prisons. I will not bring my child to ogle animals who are sadly unable to live their lives as they are meant to be lived. I will instead educate my daughter using books, movies, and other means.

Would we get it back? So let’s go back to planning our budget

based upon needs. Let’s invest in our existing recreation centres. Let’s main-

tain our roads. Let’s focus on keeping our current buildings well maintained.

The University of the Fraser Valley basketball teams walked into UBC’s War Memorial Gymnasium, the traditional mecca of university hoops in this province, and made a compelling case that they’re now the standard-bearer among B.C. schools. The Cascades women, ranked No. 2 in the nation, made good on their advance billing, crushing the No. 10-ranked Thunderbirds 76-48 on Friday and outlasting them 88-82

in a double-overtime thriller on Saturday. The No. 8-ranked UFV men faced a tough test, as their UBC counterparts came in ranked No. 1 in Canada. The T-Birds won Friday’s opener 7671, but the Cascades bounced back for a huge 89-77 upset victory on Saturday. “It means a lot to us,” said UFV women’s coach Al Tuchscherer. “UBC is kind of the big dog on the block, and I think it shows how far both of our

programs have come.” Sarah Wierks led the UFV women (6-0) with 16 points in Friday’s blowout, and her sister Nicole scored a teamhigh 21 points Saturday. On the men’s side, the Cascades’ landmark triumph was a simple matter of hitting open jump shots. With the T-Birds gearing their defensive game plan to stop Cascades power forward Kyle Grewal, UFV hoisted 35 shots from beyond the arc

on both Friday and Saturday. In the first game the Cascades made just eight treys, but they swished 16 on Saturday for a scorching .457 success rate. MEI hosts Jr. v-ball provincials The Mennonite Educational Institute junior boys volleyball team takes on some big-time hosting duties this week, as the Grade 10 provincial championship takes over the Abbotsford school. The event brings together 20 teams from across B.C. and runs Nov. 22-24 at all four gyms on the MEI campus, culminating on Saturday with the bronze (12:45 p.m.) and gold (2 p.m.) medal games at the middle school. The undefeated Eagles are favoured, coming off a victory over Fraser Heights of Surrey in the Valley final. Thrifty Foods’ annual Food for Families food drive began last week in all 29 stores, including Abbotsford, with a goal to provide fresh food to 16 food banks in the Lower Mainland, Fraser Valley, Vancouver Island and on Saltspring Island this holiday season. “The program provides Thrifty Foods customers with the option of adding a $5, $10, or $20 Food for Families gift voucher to their grocery order – funds that are then transformed into fresh groceries for those in need in our communities,” said Jim Dores, Thrifty Foods general manager. In 2011, the Food for Families fundraiser provided $206,000 to local food banks and has provided over $800,000 since the program began.

BODEN Dorothy Dolly Born in Trinidad & Tobago on October 27, 1929 passed away peacefully on November 8, 2012 at Menno Home in Abbotsford. Dorothy was predeceased by her beloved husband of 45 years, Fredrick Boden. She is survived by family members in Ontario as well as in Trinidad. Dorothy immigrated to Canada in 1956 and sponsored some family in 1967. She moved to Vancouver in 1970 and worked as a Civil Servant for the Canadian Government, Department of Immigration for 21 years before her retirement in 1990. She will be forever loved and missed by all who knew her. Dorothy will be laid to rest with her husband in the Abbotsford Hazelwood Cemetery.

She will be lovingly remembered by her son-in-law Ralph (Velma) Isaac, her children Marj (DeWayne) Unruh, Joan (Richard) Clarke, Evonne Rideout (Ari Kastanis), Teresa (Harry) Cooper, and Dan (Ellen) Baerg, 16 grandchildren, 37 great grandchildren, one sister, Dorismae Tront, many relatives & friends. She was predeceased by her husband Alph, a daughter Jeanette, her parents, four brothers and two sisters. OLDENBURGER Ron BARGEN, Heinrich (Henry) Heinrich Bargen of Abbotsford, BC passed away on November 13th 2012 at 10:30 am. The funeral service was held today 11:00 am at the EbenEzer Mennonite Church, 2051 Windsor St., Abbotsford. Henry was born in Friedensfeld, Russia on May the 8th 1922 to Abraham & Margarete Bargen. Henry married Katherina Wittenberg on January 13th 1945. They were married for 48 years. Henry worked as a carpenter and enjoyed his craft, making fine furniture for family and friends right up until weeks before his passing. Henry is survived by his wife: Katie; sisters: Frieda (Peter) Weiss and Annie (Abraham) Siebert; children: Katie (Ed) Epp, Erna (Rudy) Froese, & Hank (Debra Johnson); grandchildren: Tim, Cindy, Steven, Christopher, Derek, Caylee; and greatgrandchildren: Randy, Aaron, Rebeka, Amber, and Alexa. Henry is preceded in death by his wife, and our mother: Katherina; wife: Helen Geddert; brothers: Abraham, George, Peter, David; and sisters: Katja, Mary, Margarete, Katja and great-granddaughter Janna. The family would like to thank the staff at the Abbotsford Regional Hospital for their exceptional care and kindness.
