Public flu shot clinics underway BY SHERI REGNIER Times Staff
Greater Trail residents have four more chances this year to roll up their sleeves for an annual flu shot. Trail’s first flu clinic was up and running in the Cominco Arena on Wednesday, and with
fewer patients, wait times were brief. “The numbers of the public receiving the flu vaccine in the Greater Trail area has remained steady over the past couple of years,” said Lois Otterbine, a public health nurse who has
worked the flu clinics for 19 years. “The noticeable change is that there are now more sites offering the flu vaccine, such as pharmacies, doctor’s offices, and the public health clinics.” This year, there is an expanded eligibil-
ity for the free vaccine, to include all healthy children between six months and five years old, including household contacts and caregivers. “All persons who wish to avoid influenza symptoms can benefit from the vaccine,
and the public health clinics have seen more families with children,” commented Otterbine. According to HealthLinkBC, influenza is a serious respiratory illness caused by a virus. See SHOTS, Page 3

ROSSLAND
Sidewalks too new for salt THE ROSSLAND NEWS The City of Rossland is asking people not to use salt or salt-related products on the new downtown sidewalks this winter. The concrete is not fully cured and will need up to a year for that to happen. City staff said that at the moment, any application of de-icing salt will damage the new concrete. The city will be applying sand on the sidewalks as required. Buckets of sand will also be made available for downtown merchants to use on the sidewalks around their stores. Construction in downtown Rossland is pretty much complete now. Sierra Landscaping has a bit of work to finish up and winterize the new plants, and the company building the bus stops has been slowed down a little due to vehicle problems but should be finishing up shortly. The Spirit of Red’s Olaus Jeldness statue arrived early this week so the next step is to pour the concrete for the base, matching it to the base of the statue. The official unveiling will be at Winter Carnival but the statue may be up by December.
ST. MIKE’S FUNDRAISER
School ready to celebrate BY SHERI REGNIER Times Staff
Once again it is time to dust off the dress clothes, shine up the dancing shoes and get ready to attend an elegant dinner and dance event. On Nov. 24, St Michael’s School is hosting its second annual gala event. “This year we have named the fundraiser the Giving Tree Gala, as it is just before the hustle and bustle of the holiday season and we wanted to be reminded of the true meaning of Christmas,” said Tamara Orr, teacher at St Michael’s School. There are 220 tickets available for purchase at St Michael’s School or at Our Lady of Perpetual Health in East Trail. Tickets are $50 each and will be sold until Nov 19. Tables can be reserved online at mcmak@ shaw.ca.

Another feature at the gala will be the many donated items at the silent auction table. “The support from local business has been amazing and we are extremely grateful for all the items that are coming in everyday,” said Orr. Proceeds from the fundraiser will go towards the purchase of Smart boards for the classroom and an iPad lab. This year, the committee is excited to unveil the new school logo. “The new school logo has been kept a secret and won’t be revealed until the night of the gala,” said Orr. The fundraiser will be held in the school gym and catered by The Riverbelle. Those interested in supporting St Michael’s School in donations to the silent auction, they can call the school at 368-6151.

The illness may last five to ten days, but in the elderly, children and those with compromised immune systems, complications can become severe enough to lead to hospitalization. The flu shot offers protection against three different strains of influenza that may be circulating this winter, said an Interior Health news release. The next free flu clinic will be held on Nov. 14 at the Kiro Wellness Centre from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will also be clinics at Fruitvale Memorial Hall on Nov. 23 (9-4) and Kiro Wellness Centre on Nov. 28 (9-12). A fourth clinic will be held Dec. 12 (9-noon) at Kiro Wellness Centre, by appointment, for children’s second immunizations. Those eligible for shots at the free clinics include: • people 65 and older and their caregivers • healthy children 6 months to less than five years of age • pregnant women who will be in third trimester during flu season • residents of nursing homes and other chronic care facilities • owners and operators of poultry farms • aboriginal peoples • very obese adults • those who provide care or service in settings that house persons at high risk for developing influenza complications.

Provincial Provincial election
Former Vancouver mayor seeks Liberal nomination The Canadian Press VANCOUVER - Two highprofile British Columbians have thrown in their names for next year’s provincial election: one who is the only person ever to beat Premier Christy Clark on a ballot and another who came within a whisker of defeating her last year. Former Vancouver mayor Sam Sullivan announced Friday he’ll be seeking the nomination to run for Clark’s Liberals in the riding of Vancouver-False Creek. Sullivan defeated Clark for the mayoral nomination of one of Vancouver’s municipal parties seven years ago. On the other side of the aisle,
David Eby, executive director of the B.C. Civil Liberties Association, was acclaimed as the Opposition NDP’s candidate in Clark’s own riding of VancouverPoint Grey. Eby lost to Clark in a byelection last year by just 564 votes. The two announcements come just six months before the next provincial election, scheduled for May 14, when the governing Liberals are expected to face an incredibly difficult fight against the Opposition New Democrats. Sullivan, who became a quadriplegic at the age of 19 in a skiing accident, was elected mayor of Vancouver in 2005 after serving as a councillor for more
than a decade. He’s perhaps best known outside B.C. for the image of him waving the Olympic flag from his wheelchair during the closing ceremonies of the 2006 Winter Games in Turin, Italy. Sullivan won the 2005 mayoral nomination by defeating Clark - a former deputy premier who was seen as a potential star candidate for the Non-Partisan Association - by 81 votes. In 2008, he was forced out of the mayoral race by his own party, effectively ending his career in municipal politics. On Friday, Sullivan worked quickly to dispel any notion that old rivalries remain between him and the premier. He said Clark

MP concerned about bias
The Canadian Press VICTORIA Independent MLA John van Dongen wants B.C.’s conflict of interest commissioner to step out of an investigation just days after he asked him to step in to look at allegations he’s making against Premier Christy Clark. Van Dongen said Friday he now wants conflict commissioner Paul Fraser to step away from the investigation request on grounds of possible bias because John Paul Fraser, his son, holds a senior position in Clark’s government.
Earlier this week, van Dongen filed an official request with Paul Fraser’s office to conduct an investigation to determine if Clark was in conflict of interest nine years ago when she was part of the Liberal government when it sold Crown-owned B.C. Rail. Clark was the education minister and deputy premier in 2003 when the sale of B.C. Rail to CN Rail occurred, touching off a series of events that saw the police raid the legislature and two Liberal government

Van Dongen said he did not know Fraser’s son worked for the government or that he is a personal friend of Clark when the request with the conflict commissioner was filed. “The public is entitled to have confidence in the integrity of the conflictof-interest complaint process,” said van Dongen in a statement he read at a press conference Friday. “So is the legislature. party - and salvage its dismal popularity. Sullivan said he met with the premier and she was open to his candidacy, but he declined to say whether he or the premier first broached the subject. The Liberals won VancouverFalse Creek by a healthy margin in the 2009 election and the party’s nomination there will likely be strongly contested. Sullivan said he anticipated a “mighty battle” for the nomination. Lorne Mayencourt, a former member of the B.C. Liberal caucus who currently works for the party, has said he’s considering seeking the nomination in the riding.

the conflict of interest commissioner, to remove himself from dealing with my request for an investigation.” Clark said this week she will co-operate fully with an investigation if one proceeds. She said she wants the issue to go to the conflict commissioner, “because we will finally, once and for all, be able to put a fork in this.” Van Dongen, who said he’s spent a least $100,000 of his own money pursuing the conflict case against the premier, said he believes there is a chance of bias on the part of the commissioner. “I must stress that at this time I am not making an allegation that the commissioner is guilty of actual bias,” he said in his statement. “I am simply saying that there is a basis for a reasonable apprehension of bias on these facts which requires that someone other than Paul Fraser carry out the duties under the Members’ Conflict of Interest Act.” Van Dongen did not say who he would prefer other than Fraser to decide on his investigation request. Fraser was not immediately available for comment. Van Dongen’s investigation request alleges Clark contravened the Members’ Conflict of Interest Act. He asks the conflict commissioner to investigate her activities related to the B.C. Rail file.

Vets saluted Harpers honours Hong Kong war dead Remembrance Day
THE CANADIAN PRESS OTTAWA - Twenty-one cannon shots reverberated Sunday off the National War Memorial in Ottawa and 21 times, most of the hushed crowd of thousands collectively flinched at the sound. Except for the veterans, whose eyes never left the looming cenotaph covered in wreaths and later poppies by those paying tribute to their service in honour of Remembrance Day. Veterans in wheelchairs wrapped themselves in blue fleece blankets to ward off the chill, sometimes helped to their feet by family members or by the young soldiers in their midst. “The younger veterans and the older veterans, they meet today in mutual respect and admiration as partners in the battle against evil. They are Canada’s best,” Rabbi Reuven Bulka, Honorary Chaplain of Dominion Command, told the crowd. “They fought our fight to ensure freedom and dignity for everyone. They therefore deserve to be celebrated, applauded and eternally appreciated as authentic heroes.” Gov. Gen. David Johnston, who was wearing the blue uniform of the Royal Canadian Airforce, led the national service that also included a military parade, prayers and song. Among those in attendance was Roxanne Priede, this year’s National Silver Cross Mother, picked by the Royal Canadian Legion to attend the ceremony on behalf of all Canadian mothers who have lost children in the service to their country. Priede shed tears as she lay a wreath at the base of the war memorial. Her son, Master Corporal Darrell Jason Priede, died in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan in 2007. “May we never forget those who have gone before us, paving the way to a world of greater freedom, more lasting justice and a more profound peace,” said Brig. Gen Karl McLean, Chaplain General of the Canadian Forces, who led the ceremony in prayer. The public encircled the monument Sunday as if to give it a giant national hug and needed little urging from Bulka to collectively shout a thank-you.

THE CANADIAN PRESS HONG KONG Canadians should live their lives worthy of the freedom, democracy and justice they enjoy as a tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice defending those values, Prime Minister Stephen Harper said Sunday. Harper marked
Remembrance Day at the Sai Wan Bay military cemetery where 283 Canadian soldiers are buried on a grassy, tree-fringed slope overlooking the skyscrapers of bustling Hong Kong. “It lies within us to do this: We can walk worthy of the lives that they laid down for us,” Harper said to a group
of about 300 officials and onlookers. “They have given their lives to make possible the freedom that we enjoy, the democracy by which we govern ourselves, and the justice under which we live.” Harper, his wife Laureen and a long list of parliamentarians and local dignitaries
placed wreaths at the base of the Sai Wan memorial. A local children’s choir sang the Canadian and Chinese national anthems. The battle of Hong Kong was one of the most catastrophic episodes in Canadian military history. The 1,975 Canadian troops from the Winnipeg Grenadiers and the
Royal Rifles of Canada, who had received little combat training, were vastly outnumbered by the tens of thousands of Japanese soldiers that descended on the city in the hours after the attack on Pearl Harbour in December 1941. They managed to hold off the Japanese for nearly three weeks,
The Canadian Press TORONTO - Storied Canadian furniture retailer Leon’s is buying high-profile rival The Brick in a $700-million friendly deal aimed at fending off U.S. competitors making inroads in Canada. With American retail giants such as Walmart and Target threatening their share of the marketplace, the two Canadian companies announced a deal that would see Leon’s take ownership of The Brick but operate the two under separate banners. The deal also comes amid a tough economic climate for furniture retailers with a number of factors, includ-
ing a softening housing market, taking a toll on sales. At a press conference Monday, Leon’s Furniture Ltd. (TSX:LNF) says it will pay $5.40 per share. Friday’s closing price on Brick (TSX:BRK) stock on the Toronto Stock Exchange was $3.50. Brick shares were up 52 per cent, or $1.82, to $5.32 in early trading Monday, while Leon’s shares nudged up three cents to $11.60. The two chains are facing new competitors, chiefly in the form of American retail giant Target, which plans to begin opening up to 135 stores across Canada in the coming
year. Walmart is adding 73 stores across Canada in the coming months, including 28 former Zellers stores. The acquisition of The Brick would will

The Brick’s president and CEO, Vi Konkle, will continue as president of The Brick, the companies said. “We welcome this opportunity to partner with this iconic corporation,” Konkle said in the release. “By joining forces, we can strengthen both of our businesses, enhancing everything that has made Leon’s and The Brick two of Canada’s best-known retailers and preserving The Brick’s roots in Edmonton.”

Fish farms not to blame for salmon decline
B
efore the 1,200-page, $25-million Cohen Commission report on the Fraser River sockeye salmon fishery slips beneath the waves, allow me to dip my toe into the river of data that has flowed by in the past three years. If your information on this hugely complex subject consisted of skimming a few news stories or watching protesters on TV, you will likely conclude what urban people have been indoctrinated with for years. The whole issue is salmon farms and whether they are bad or catastrophic. “Freeze new salmon farms on sockeye migration route: Cohen” said the headline on a Black Press report. Those who read past the headline would learn that Justice Bruce Cohen recommended a freeze on further salmon farms around the Discovery Islands group near Campbell River until 2020. It’s up to the industry to show by that time that the risk is “minimal,” or farms there should be shut down. A B.C. Salmon Farming Association spokesman said only nine of 70 B.C. salmon farms are in that area. There are no current applications for more. Let’s say you decide to plunge in, and download the full report from,cohencommission.ca. If

you go to Volume 2, page 102, you will see a series of graphs that show sockeye runs from rivers other than the Fraser, from Washington all the way up to Alaska. It’s not a pretty sight. From Washington up to the Central Coast, the Skeena, Nass and up to Yukon’s Klukshu and Alaska’s Alsek, most runs show a decline starting in the 1980s or early 1990s. This includes runs that migrate down the west side of Vancouver Island, away from salmon farms. Alaska doesn’t allow farms, preferring “ranching” – a strategy that floods the ocean habitat with millions of hatchery fish. These are commercially fished and marketed as “wild.” B.C.’s North Coast has never had salmon farms. The area has
been subject to a moratorium since an NDP-controlled legislative committee gave its verdict on the problem in 2008. The popular villain in those days was sea lice. Skeena MLA Robin Austin chaired the committee that called for an end to open-pen salmon farms in five years. Then-agriculture minister Pat Bell approved one NDP recommendation, a moratorium on salmon farms in North Coast waters. This was after the Pacific Salmon Forum conducted its own four-year study, led by former fisheries minister John Fraser. Similar to Cohen, Fraser concluded that there is no simple answer to this complex problem. And they agreed that salmon farms don’t explain it. Cohen’s report makes it clear that the problem is far larger than could possibly be explained by salmon farms. How about logging impact? Cohen concludes after much testimony that stream protection has improved significantly during the time of observed sockeye decline. Impact from extra runoff due to pine beetle infestation couldn’t be evaluated. Poaching on the Fraser? Cohen didn’t get around to that. His biggest concern was climate
“From Washington up to the Central Coast, the Skeena, Nass and up to Yukon’s Klukshu and Alaska’s Alsek, most runs show a decline starting in the 1980s or early 1990s.” change, warming sensitive river waters and affecting ocean conditions. During the Cohen commission hearings, the 2010 Fraser sockeye run came in gangbusters, with 35 million fish. One leading theory is that ash from an Alaska volcano fertilized the ocean, producing algae that supported more salmon feed. Could it be that salmon ranching from Alaska, Japan and elsewhere is simply depleting the food supply? That too is inconclusive. Finally, Tides Canada, a U.S. front group that diverts attention from U.S. salmon and oil tankers, spent $25,000 to publicize Cohen evidence. But only as it relates to B.C. salmon farms, and how bad they are. Tom Fletcher is legislative reporter and columnist for Black Press

Zeppelin songs used LOS ANGELES What tunes fit a postapocalyptic society? For NBC’s freshman drama “Revolution,” the answer is Led Zeppelin’s “Kashmir” and “Since I’ve Been Loving You.” The songs will be featured in next week’s episode
of “Revolution.” On the same day, Led Zeppelin’s “Celebration Day” album and a companion documentary on DVD will be released. Corporate synergy led to the deal for the band that rarely allows use of its music in Hollywood projects.

the comment. Sona, who had been employed by the Conservative party for months after the election, has repeatedly insisted he was not behind the robocalls. He had also repeatedly urged the real Poutine to come forward. There is no public evidence Sona is Poutine - the operative who used a Conservative party database’s records to try to mislead thousands of voters into believing their polling station had moved or changed via fraudulent robocalls. In fact, there is no public evidence identifying anyone as Poutine. Was MacKay referencing Sona when he said an individual has apparently been identified as being responsible for these calls? If so, on what basis did he assert this? Has MacKay since reached a different understanding surrounding this matter? Or, does he now believe he was mistaken when he made this robocalling assertion? MacKay is to be in Guelph on Nov. 30 - to receive a leadership award from a city high school. He would show leadership to answer these questions before that time or during that visit.
U.S. debt cliff not scary
F
ar from being a harbinger of the End of Civilization As We Have Known It, the fiscal cliff that has so frightened people Americans and Canadians is doing exactly what it is supposed to do and we owe a debt of gratitude to its creators. Like the prospect of a hanging in the morning, the possibility of dragging, the U.S. economy back into recession is rightly concentrating the minds of all the members of Congress on the country’s outof-control finances and burgeoning debt. For those not familiar with the fiscal cliff, a quick primer: a breathtaking concatenation of measures will all kick in at midnight on New Year’s Eve – unless Congress decides otherwise. These measures include some stiff tax increases (the expiry of the tax cuts enacted under former President George W. Bush, as well as of last year’s temporary payroll tax reductions and the new taxes needed for Obamacare, for example). Also pending is a series of spending cuts affecting over 1,000 programs in Washington. Hardly anything will be spared: defence, social programs and Medicare, for instance, would all be sliced. The cumulative effect is about $560 billion all at once, money taken out of the
BRIAN LEE
CROWLEY Troy Media pockets of American consumers, whether as tax rises, benefit cuts or lost public service salaries. The Congressional Budget Office, a non-partisan organization serving Congress’s need for expert advice on the effects of budget and other economic measures, thinks all this would reduce the size of the American economy by about 3.5 per cent. Since that economy has been quite anemic, our neighbours would find themselves back in recession just as they were beginning to show a little spark. Since we send about two thirds of our exports south, and since a recession-wracked U.S. buys less from foreigners like us, our own less than stellar growth would likely also be badly damaged. Crazy eh? I beg to differ. Remember, a good part of the fiscal cliff was designed to provoke exactly the reaction we are all having. It was to strike fear into the hearts of politicians, journalists and voters, so that they would think seriously about solutions. To that extent it is working brilliantly. The Bush tax cuts were
extended just long enough so that they would expire after last Tuesday’s election. The spending cuts were part of the deal struck between Democrats and Republicans during the battle over raising the amount of money the U.S. government is authorized by Congress to borrow (the famous “debt ceiling”). The debt ceiling could not be raised without the agreement of the House of Representatives. This gave the Republicans leverage which they used to work out a deal that held out some prospect of getting America’s addiction to debt under a modicum of control. A bi-partisan commission was struck to examine both spending and taxes and to recommend a strategy that might win broad support in Congress. A punt is the most likely short-term solution, but the Republicans will not agree to getting rid of the cliff permanently. One day America must wake up and fix its finances. These periodic crises will make that moment come sooner rather than later. Two cheers for the fiscal cliff. Brian Lee Crowley is the Managing Director of the Macdonald-Laurier Institute, an independent non-partisan public policy think tank in Ottawa. www.macdonaldlaurier.ca.

BILL TARMEY
Soap star dies THE ASSOCIATED PRESS LONDON - Actor Bill Tarmey, who for 30 years played loveable rogue Jack Duckworth on the British soap opera “Coronation Street,” died Friday at the age of 71, the show’s producers said. Tarmey died on the Spanish island of Tenerife. He had been in poor health for many years with heart problems and other ailments. “I could make it easier on myself. I could give up smoking. I could go and sit in a rocking chair,” Tarmey once said. “But that wouldn’t be me. That would kill me sooner than the old ticker would.” Work-shy, pigeonfancying Jack and his tart-tongued wife Vera, played by Liz Dawn, were among the longest-running characters on the soap, which is set in a working-class town in northwest England. Their rocky but enduring relationship was at the emo-

tional heart of the fictional community of Weatherfield. Tarmey was a former labourer and nightclub singer who first appeared on “Coronation Street” in 1977 as an extra. He was made a regular two years later and stayed until 2010. Some 11 million people watched his final episode, in which Jack died peacefully in his armchair. He was also a singer, and had two top40 singles in Britain, including a cover of “Wind Beneath My Wings.” But he remained modest. “I’m just a pillock (fool) who comes into a studio to say some words that some other clever person has written,” Tarmey wrote in his autobiography, “Jack Duckworth And Me.” “For years, I’d managed to get away with it, but I’d always been waiting for the bubble to burst.”
DAVID PETRAEUS
Hanky panky probe expands THE ASSOCIATED PRESS WASHINGTON - Members of Congress said Sunday they want to know more details about the FBI investigation that revealed an extramarital affair between ex-CIA Director David Petraeus and his biographer, questioning when the retired general popped up in the FBI inquiry, whether national security was compromised and why they weren’t told sooner. “We received no advanced notice. It was like a lightning bolt,” said Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California, who heads the Senate Intelligence Committee. The FBI was investigating harassing emails sent by Petraeus biographer and girlfriend Paula Broadwell to a second woman. That probe of Broadwell’s emails revealed the affair between Broadwell and Petraeus. The FBI contacted Petraeus and other intelligence officials, and Director of National Intelligence James Clapper asked Petraeus to resign. A senior U.S. military official identified the second woman as Jill Kelley, 37, who lives in Tampa, Fla., and serves as an unpaid social liaison to MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, where the military’s Central Command and Special Operations Command are located. Staffers for Petraeus said Kelley and her husband were regular guests at events he held at Central Command headquarters. In a statement Sunday evening, Kelley and her husband, Scott, said: “We and our family have been friends with Gen. Petraeus and his family for over five years. We respect his and his family’s privacy and want the same for us and our three children.” A U.S. official said the coalition countries represented at Central Command gave Kelley an appreciation certificate on which she was referred to as an “honorary ambassador” to the coalition, but she has no official status and is not employed by the U.S. government. The official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he wasn’t authorized to discuss the case publicly, said Kelley is known to drop the “honorary” part and refer

told the White House before, during and after the attack in Benghazi. Republicans and some Democrats have questioned the U.S. response and protection of diplomats stationed overseas. Morell was expected to testify in place of Petraeus, and lawmakers said he should have the answers to their questions. But Feinstein and others didn’t rule out the possibility that Congress will compel Petraeus to testify about Benghazi at a later date, even though he’s relinquished his job. “I don’t see how in the world you can find out what happened in Benghazi before, during and after the attack if General Petraeus doesn’t testify,” said Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C. Graham, who is a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, wants to create a joint congressional committee to investigate the U.S. response to that attack. Feinstein said she first learned of Petraeus’ affair from the media late last week, and confirmed it in a phone call Friday with Petraeus. She eventually was briefed by the FBI and said so far there was no indication that national security was breached. Still, Feinstein called the news “a heartbreak” for her personally and U.S. intelligence operations, and said she didn’t understand why the FBI didn’t give her a heads up as soon as Petraeus’ name emerged in the investigation.

Hawks bow to Bruins
Smokies steal one in snake pit BYJIM BAILEY
Times Sports Editor
In a pair of road games, the Trail Smoke Eaters exacted a measure of revenge on the Vernon Vipers Friday night, but fell in a close 3-1 match to the Merritt Centennials Saturday. Braden Pears was in the right spot at the right time as he banged in a rebound 28 seconds into the second overtime, to launch the Smokies to a 2-1 victory over the Vipers. The Smokies bounced back from a 9-2 loss at home last week, to play a highly disciplined and strong defensive game to nip the snakes in their own rink. Jesse Knowler’s recent return to the lineup after being out with an injury has paid dividends, as he picked up the assist on the winner when his low blast was kicked out by Viper goalie Austin Smith, but Pears jumped on the loose puck to give the Smokies their ninth win of the season. “It was a tough game last weekend and we just wanted to show them we had a bad game and that we could beat them on home ice,” Knowler told Vernon Morningstar reporter Graeme Corbett.

Trail Smoke Eaters defenceman Marley Keca battles for the puck in BCHL action against the Vernon Vipers on Friday. The Smokies came back to earn a dramatic 2-1 victory in double-OT. “Last game, I don’t know what we were doing; we just didn’t show up to play.”

T. J. Dumonceaux got the Vipers on the board early, with a great individual effort 2:17 into the match, however Smokie goalie Lyndon Stanwood shut the door after that, stopping 24 of
25 shots for his eighth victory of the season. The line of Brent Baltus, Garrett McMullen, and Scott Davidson put in another good effort and would be rewarded, as Baltus evened the game four minutes into the third, slamming home a Valik Chichkin rebound for the equalizer. “We’ve been playing pretty good hockey the last month, and to get rewarded with this is huge,” said Smoke Eater coach Bill Birks. “If we keep teams to 30 shots and under, we’ve got a good chance to win. Tonight was proof of that.” The Smokies outshot the Vipers 30-25. Trail was up against another top team in the
Merritt Centennials on Saturday. The Cents were coming off a big 3-2 win over Penticton Vees Friday night, and received honourable mention in this week’s Canadian Junior Hockey League’s Top 20. Trail took a first period lead on the power play when Chichkin wired home a pass from Djordje Leposavic to net his first goal as a Smokie. However the Cents were relentless in the second period, firing 20 shots at Stanwood until Regan Soquila wristed home the equalizer, beating the Smokies netminder at 15:15 of the period. Brandon Bruce scored the winner at 9:39 of the third on
a shorthanded effort, picking up a loose puck at the Trail blue line breaking in and beating Stanwood to put the Cents up for good. Brendan Lamont added an empty netter, as the Centennials went on to the 3-1 win. The Cents out shot the Smoke Eaters 45-28 and now sit two points back of Penticton for top spot in the Interior Division. Penticton is the 12th ranked team in the nation according to the CJHL poll, down from sixth spot the previous week. Trail next plays Prince George and Penticton at the Cominco Arena Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
BY TIMES STAFF Goals were hard to come by for the Beaver Valley Nitehawks as they dropped a pair of games on the weekend to the Castlegar Rebels and Grand Forks Border Bruins. After losing a 7-3 match to the Rebels, the Nitehawks looked to rebound against the Border Bruins on Saturday but lost a 3-0 decision despite bombarding Bruins goalie Dominic Stadnyk with 58 shots. The Hawks outshot Grand Forks 58-19, including a 28-shot barrage in the second period yet could not solve the former Nitehawk goalie. The Bruins’ Connor Bowen netted the winning goal at 12:30 of the second period on a power play. The Abbotsford native finished a nice passing play with Jacob Jeske and Nathan Cory as they broke in on a 2-on-0, to silence a stunned Beaver Valley crowd. The Hawks had ample opportunity, however a couple goal posts, good rebound control, and some heroic saves from Stadnyk thwarted a Hawk attack that went 0-for-9 on the power play. Jackson Purvis added an insurance marker for the Bruins at 16:14 of the third and an empty netter to make it 3-0. It is the second win of the season for the Bruins, both coming against the Nitehawks. The Nitehawks goalie Zack Perehudoff took the loss for B.V. At the Castlegar Rec Complex Friday, the Rebels jumped out to a 4-1 first period lead and outshot the Hawks 41-20 on their way to a 7-3 victory. Kody Disher had a four-point night and Erick Alden scored twice and added an assist for Castlegar, while Taylor Stafford picked up a goal and an assist for the Hawks. Goalie Jordan Gluck was the winner in net for Castlegar, while Travis Beekhuizen took the loss in goal for the Hawks.
FIELD HOCKEY
Canada starts strong BY TIMES STAFF The women’s national field hockey team got off to a great start at the World League Round 1 qualifier in Trinidad-Tobago Sunday. The team led by Rossland native Thea Culley scored a huge 12-0 victory over Venezuela, overcoming the first hurdle in it’s quest to qualify for the 2014 World Cup. “We came in with an offensive game plan and can look back at good stretches of play,” Head Coach Kimo Linders said in a Field Hockey Canada release. “Execution in the circle worked well.” The team has been adjusting to the varied weather conditions of Trinidad and Tobago including high temperatures, torrential rains and humidity. McIlroy doubles up on Tour victories THE ASSOCIATED PRESS SINGAPORE - After capturing his second major and finishing the year at No. 1, Rory McIlroy had just one goal left - winning
the money titles on both sides of the Atlantic. His third-place finish at the Singapore Open on Sunday guarantees he’ll reach that milestone.
McIlroy has $4.7 million in winnings on the European Tour, giving him a $1.33 million edge over Sweden’s Peter Hanson. McIlroy had already wrapped up the PGA Tour money title with more than $8 million. He becomes the
second golfer in history to win both titles in the same season, matching Luke Donald’s feat from last year. “It really is hugely satisfying to finally become the European No. 1, especially after finishing second two of the last three years,” the 2 3 - y e a r- o l d said. Thursday, McIlroy “It has November 15, always been one 2012 is of my goals to become No. 1 in Europe ever since securing my Tour card five years

ago, but then to also end the year as both European and PGA Tour No. 1 is just amazing.” McIlroy, who won his second major at the PGA Championship in August, needed to rally on Sunday in Singapore to finish third. He then had to wait for Louis Oosthuizen to lose the title in a playoff to Matteo Manassero. The South African could have still passed McIlroy if he had won Singapore and the Dubai World Championship.
McIlroy said his main focus will be to “keep trying to improve on any little thing” next year. “It’s been nice that, year after year, my results have improved and I’d like to keep that going, but if I feel like I’m a better golfer next year than I was this year, and so on, then that’s how I want to feel,” he said. He’d like to add to his number of majors, though. Asked to rank his three biggest achievements of 2012, McIlroy didn’t hesitate: “Major, No. 1, and then the money list.”
Culley leads team
FROM PAGE 11 Culley pitched in with a goal and a couple assists as seven different players scored for Team Canada including a hat trick from Brienne Stairs, a pair from Katherine Gillis, Marian Dickinson and Caashia Karringten, and singles from Abigail Raye and Poonam Sandhu. Dickinson, Karringten and Sandhu scored their first international goals for Canada. In addition, first international caps were
earned by Angela Lancaster, Rachel Donohoe and Lauren Logush, while Culley, the senior member of the team, played in her 87th international match. Team Canada played Guyana Monday but results were unavailable by press time. The team will face off against Barbados, Trinidad andTobago, and Uruguay to round out the tournament that will see the top three teams advance to the next round.

The Associate Press NEW YORK - The puppeteer who performs as Elmo on “Sesame Street” is taking a leave of absence from the popular kids’ show following allegations that he had a relationship with a 16-year-old boy. Sesame Workshop says puppeteer Kevin Clash denies the charges, which were first made in June by the alleged partner, who by then was 23. In a statement issued Monday, Sesame Workshop said its investigation

they refuse to avoid occasions just because of Tyler, even though after these gatherings my mother vents to me in the car. I can’t take this anymore, and I now avoid Tyler at all costs. I’m thinking of videotaping him and showing his superiors. I would not trust this man to carry a gun, serve warrants or make arrests. I’m afraid he’s going to do something rash and someone will get hurt, and I’ll have to testify against him at his trial. If any police out there are reading this, I’d like to know what they think. -- No State Dear No State: Earning a badge would
cess.” Success means so many things and is different for every person. It makes me sad to think someone would stay away because of that. Please tell those who feel they cannot attend reunions because they aren’t “successful”: We miss you and want to see you on this side of heaven. Time is short and very precious, and we want to spend some of it with you. -- Sad 50th HS Reunion Dear Reunion: You have made a heartfelt plea for people to attend such functions regardless of their personal insecurities. It is not uncommon for attendees to judge themselves against others’ accomplishments, but by the time a 50th reunion rolls around, such fears are meaningless. We know that some people had such a terrible high school experience that they have no desire to relive it in any form, and they shouldn’t be
pressured. But for the rest of you, please go. Dear Annie: Dan Peek from Grandparents and Others on Watch, Inc. was right on target in advising “Older Sister” to contact authorities about her brother, the
sex offender. We live in a tight community. One woman was having sleepovers at her home while her father, a registered child sex offender, was living with her. She was unwilling to recognize
the risk, so we contacted all the parents of the children. We could not endure knowing that she was supplying him with potential victims. -- Serious in the South About Protecting Kids

Sudoku is a number-placing puzzle based on a 9x9 grid with several given numbers. not change Tyler from a jerk into a responsible adult, but it does increase the fear levels. However, if he is simply bragging to his relatives and not actually doing anything, there’s not much recourse for you. Your parents get to handle Tyler however they choose, so please stop trying to dictate their actions. But if you dislike your cousin so much that you cannot bear to be in his presence, we agree that you should avoid these family gatherings whenever possible. Dear Annie: I’m one of several people planning our upcoming high school reunion for the class of 1962. There are a few people who have never attended any of our reunions. I know my classmates didn’t have the same high school experience I did. But for the life of me, the one excuse I can’t get my head around is, “I haven’t been a suc-

Dear Annie: My cousin “Tyler,” who had a host of problems as a teenager, became a policeman at age 23. He was a jerk before he joined up, but now he’s become a bigger jerk. Tyler is always bragging that he can fix parking tickets or give you a ticket just for annoying him. He talks back to people constantly, always trying to have the last word. It’s awful, and it makes family gatherings impossible. His mother is a champion grudge holder and is still angry with Tyler for things he did as a teen. His father is completely passive. Tyler’s wife is OK, although I don’t know what she sees in him. His toddler son is very aggressive. I’ve asked Tyler politely to behave more appropriately, but of course, he won’t listen. I’ve walked out of family dinners and made it clear why. I’ve even spoken to my family about it, but

Race on for Zellers’ mascot The Canadian Press TORONTO - Call it a bear market - three charities have been named as finalists in the race to adopt Zellers’ famous mascot Zeddy. Camp Trillium, Autism Ontario and Cystic Fibrosis Canada are the three finalists named by the discount department store to win its cheerful mascot. Fans can watch video pleas
from each organization and vote for a winner until Nov. 15, with the victorious charity to be revealed the next day. Introduced in the mid-80s, Zeddy is a perpetually smiling bear mascot who wears a shock of white hair and a yellow sweater bearing his name. In addition to the voting campaign, Zellers has posted a light-hearted video showing the friendly bear trying - and

failing - to adapt to life in the wilderness. The Hudson’s Bay Co. sold leasing rights last year on more than 200 Zellers locations to U.S. retailer Target. The company has since been in the process of shutting down its Zellers brand. On the Net: w w w. f a c e b o o k . c o m / ZellersCanada/app152863128186543
