Sports Editor Troy Stecher's stock continues to soar. Though he was passed over in last summer's NHL Entry Draft, the 18-yearold Richmondite is again showing his selection as the top defenceman at the 2012 Royal Bank Cup national Junior A hockey championship was well-deserved and accurately reflects his talent. For the second consecutive sea-
son, the Penticton Vees' blueliner has been selected to the 22-player roster that will represent Canada West at the World Junior A Challenge on through Nov. 11 at the Mariners Centre in Yarmouth, N.S. Stecher's steady play during the 2011 event in Langley was instrumental in Canada West winning the gold medal. Pooled in Group A along with the Czech Republic and Russia, Canada West plays its first game versus the Czechs
at noon (Pacific Time) Tuesday and faces Russia at the same time Wednesday. Playoffs begin Thursday, with the final Sunday at 3 p.m. Canada East is pooled with Switzerland and the U.S. in Group B. Stecher recently de-committed to play, beginning next season, for the University of Nebraska Omaha Mavericks, meaning he's free to accept a scholarship from any National College Athletic Association school.

COME MEET BARB, THE NEW OWNER, T ON YOUR NEXT VISI
Senior soccer's League Cup playdowns resume next week Fifteen years ago, a group of friends who enjoyed playing casual soccer in intramural sports leagues formed FC DSBH. Today, the club is better known by the monikers its two teams sport—Hounds and Kelevra. Last week, the teams played one another in a spirited affair that concluded the first round of the Richmond Senior Soccer Association's annual League Cup with Kelevra hanging on for a 2-1 victory. Though last in
the Premier Division (1-6), Kelevra has been playing well of late as indicated by their recent 2-1 loss to AllBlacks and 2-0 to Athletics. They'll be favourites in their upcoming Cup match next Wednesday against the First Division Firefighters (3-3-1) at Hugh Boyd Park, but not overwhelmingly so. In a game that saw both teams play cautiously to start, the Hounds were first to get a good chance against Kelevra. Seven minutes in, against the counter-attack, a cross from striker Julius Salerno found right midfielder
Tamer Mohamed alone at the top of the box. His shot trickled just wide of the right post. Twenty-two minutes in, Kelevra striker Trevor Koochin found himself one-on-one with the Hounds' keeper only to kick the ball wide right. The Hounds broke the scoreless tie in the 29th minute as left back Andrew Blackman's long pass found striker Moe Hosny. Hosny played the ball off to Julius Salerno (top goal scorer on the Hounds with seven) who dribbled around the keeper and put the ball into an open net.
Down 1-0 at the half, Kelevra came on strong early in the second frame, pinning the Hounds deep in their end. But Hounds' keeper Miguel Beltran made a couple of strong saves to keep his team in the lead. Kelevra's constant pressure paid off in the 71st minute. Defender Graham Tooke headed the ball into the net off a free kick. In the 89th minute, as the match was looking to head off to penalty kicks, Kelevra striker Trevor Koochin scored on a scramble following a corner kick.
With one last chance in injury time, Hounds' midfielder Ali Ghashghaee had a glorious chance to tie the game but shot the ball over the upright as the final whistle sounded. Kelevra is one of four remaining Premier Division teams in the League Cup playdowns. Jugadores and AC Richmond will face each other—for the third time already this season— next week at King George Park. AC Richmond leads the head-to-head series with one win, while the other meeting resulted in a draw. The win came last Friday when AC won
1-0, thanks largely to the goalkeeping of Dan Lazar of the Jugadores who kept his team in the game. The A bracket of the League Cup also promises to provide more exciting action next week. The Oldblacks (a Masters' Division team) is set to play First Division coleader Mark's Clippers next Tuesday at King George Park, while the Graduates will meet the Jugadores II next Wednesday at King George Park. The latter two teams, both in the Second Division, played to a 2-2 draw earlier this season.
