Bill in Malaya 1951-1952
DEAN, Bill The Green Howards, Malaya, 1951 The regiment was first raised in November 1688 by Colonel Francis Luttrell at Dunster Castle in Somerset, for service under William, Prince of Orange. It was in 1744, during the Wars of the Austrian Succession, that the Regiment first became known as ‘The Green Howards’. At that
Bill is second from the right. The Green Howards, Malaya, 1951-1952 time, the Regimental Colonel was the Honourable Charles Howard, the second son of the 3rd Earl of Carlisle. Following the convention of the time, the Regiment was known as “Howard’s Regiment”. However, in the campaign the regiment was brigaded with another regiment whose Colonel was also called Howard. Thus, some distinction between the two regiments had to be made. As the regiment wore green facings to its uniform, it was natural
to be known as “The Green Howards”. The other regiment wore buff facings, and became known as the “The Buff Howards”. The nickname “The Green Howards” stuck, and survived until 1920 when it became the official title of the regiment. Between 1949 and 1952 the Regiment served with great distinction in the campaign against the Chinese and Malayan Communist Terrorists in Malaya.

William served in the World War, 1914-1918 with the Royal Canadian Dragoons, France; with the 2nd Dorsets, Mesopotamia (Iraq); Duke of Cornwall Light Infantry, Salonica, Greece; R.C.F. and R.A.F. Egypt and Palestine; discharged with the rank of Captain, awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. He was called up September 1939 by the Royal Canadian Air Force and remained in Europe working for United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration (UNRRA) until 1951. Will kept a diary of his wartime experiences in which he recounts with great clarity all he experienced. Many unbelievable close calls, events and anecdotes. In one example he recounts that T.E. Lawrence, “in full Arab garb” visited their camp in Ramla, Palestine (Israel). They shot snakes together in the pond behind the barracks.
The book, “The Flying Horseman” by C.O. Lamp was written years later about William and his WW I experiences. The author based the story on Will’s diaries.
