A John Deere tractor flattened the front end of a 1995 Ford Escort in a head-on collision on Friday at approximately 7:40 a.m. in Abbotsford. The 48-year-old driver of the car was taken by air ambulance to a Vancouverarea hospital for treatment of broken ribs and a punctured lung. Dairy farmer Rudi Meier told The News he was driving on Whatcom Road, pulling a seed mixer, and turned

onto South Parallel Road to see the car coming straight for him, in his lane. He estimated the speed of the car at about 70 km/h. While he suffered no major injuries, Meier said he was shaken up and a little sore after the incident. His main concern was for the other driver. “I was afraid of hurting him more than anything and I was just hoping I could slow down enough that he might miss me or maybe I’d just get a little of him.”

He said he “feared the worst” when he got out of the tractor to check on the motorist, who Meier said was not coherent. A nurse and a volunteer firefighter were close by and came to assist the driver while Meier called 911. His statements have not been verified by police, but the accident did occur in his lane. Abbotsford Police Const. Ian MacDonald said no charges have yet been laid in the incident.

Abbotsford city hall is approaching business licence fees as another form of taxation, and that could get the city in legal trouble, says a local business owner. Cameron MacKay is challenging the city to justify the increases in business licence fees that staff are proposing. He owns Valley Racquet Centre, which will see its fees rise $800. The licence for the adjoining Cheers pub will go from $540 to $7,000 – if he does not join the Bar Watch program. Cheers is not part of Bar Watch for “philosophical reasons,” he said. Being part of that program could lower his fee from $7,000 to $1,200. “The fees have no basis in law,” he said, maintaining council should be able to show a relationship between rising fees and rising administration costs. Banman said he wouldn’t comment on the legality of the new proposed fees.

Members of the Abbotsford branch of the Royal Canadian Legion are upset that the hours for their poppy campaign have been reduced at the Costco store on Sumas Way. Gary Goodfellow, poppy chairman for the local branch, said the legion was given only four days this year – Nov. 2, 3, 9 and 10 – to distribute the symbol of remembrance at the front of the store. Previously, legion members and members of local youth cadet organizations distributed the poppies for a full two-week period O E VIDLINE every day during store hours. Goodfellow said the donations collected at Costco alone amount to about $1,000 a day during the campaign. No other locations have tried to reduce the hours they make available for the poppy campaign, he said. “It’s really upsetting everybody,” Goodfellow added. Canadian Legion B.C./Yukon Command, said the provincial organization was notified by the Abbotsford branch that their hours had been cut at

Costco. She said this year marks the first time she has heard of such a move. “I think it’s shameful,” she said. “That Costco should think very, very hard about what their view is on veterans.” Kruse said the funds raised during the poppy campaign support programs at the local, provincial and national levels. This includes the Veterans’ Transition Program, which provides trauma counselling and other services to veterans of all ages. Many of them are young men and women suffering from the effects of war in places such as Bosnia and Afghanistan, she said. The Abbotsford branch donated $9,000 to that program in the last two years, Goodfellow said. But legion member Alan Hood said it’s about more than just the money. “(The Costco decision) is quite sad when you think about it because ... of what the vets have done for the people of today,” he said. Local man shoots himself in Whistler

A 41-year-old Abbotsford man shot himself following an armed standoff with police in Whistler on Saturday evening. The incident began at about 3 p.m., when RCMP received a call about a suicidal male from the Lower Mainland who was on his way to Whistler. Officers located the man’s vehicle at the south end of town and attempted to stop the driver. The man continued into Whistler

Village, stopped in a parking lot, got out of the car with a handgun, and walked to a dirt bike park, where police contained him. The Cohen Inquiry is urging an immediate eight-year freeze on new net-pen salmon farms in the Discovery Islands between northern Vancouver Island and the B.C. mainland. Farms in that area should be prohibited outright in 2020 if the Department of Fisheries and Oceans cannot confidently say by then the risk to wild salmon from aquaculture there is minimal, the inquiry’s three-volume report says, and the ban should be immediate if evidence of elevated risk arises sooner. No single culprit – not fish farms, overfishing, pollution, natural predators or global warming – gets primary blame for the two-decade decline of Fraser River sockeye salmon. And while commission head and retired Justice Bruce Cohen said he saw “no smoking gun” in the evidence he heard, key recommendations aim to limit the possible threat from aquaculture. “Mitigation measures should not be delayed in the absence of scientific certainty,” Cohen said, adding farms in the Discovery Islands of Johnstone Strait have potential to introduce exotic diseases and aggravate existing ones in wild fish. He also recommended DFO no longer be charged with promoting the salmon farming industry to prevent “divided loyalties” or conflicts of interest from compromising its duty to defend wild fish. “As long as DFO has a mandate to promote salmon farming, there is a risk that it will act in a manner that favours the interests of the salmon farming industry over the health of wild stocks.” Critics have accused DFO of siding with the aquaculture industry while failing to protect wild stocks amid years of budget cuts and mismanagement. If Cohen’s recommendations are followed, existing farms in the Discovery Islands could continue operations – unless the fisheries minister decides before 2020 that they pose a “more than minimal risk of serious harm” to migrating Fraser sockeye. While the inquiry findings were being prepared, the federal government this year significantly downgraded habitat protection laws and is now planning cuts to front-line DFO

biologists. Cohen warned Ottawa further cuts to DFO are dangerous to B.C.’s iconic salmon species and run counter to his key finding that much more research is needed. “The shrinking resources of government, which may result in delays in implementing reforms and research, mean that the stressors to which sockeye are exposed and the deterioration of sockeye habitat will continue,” he said in the report. Cohen called last spring’s legislative amendments “troubling” and said they appear to take DFO “in a very different direction” from the advice of many experts in the field to protect fish habitat and promote biodiversity. The report says sources of stress specific to the Fraser – such as pollution and development – have likely played a role in the decline. But he said troubled fisheries beyond the Fraser system suggest broader problems in marine waters play a big role. “I heard enough evidence about warming waters to conclude that climate change is a significant stressor for sockeye and in combination with other stressors, may determine the fate of the fishery.” Leading conservationists said they would have preferred an immediate aquaculture ban but most hailed the report. “He obviously didn’t File photo hear enough to say ‘Get the nets out of the water,’” said Georgia Strait Alliance executive director Christianne Wilhelmson. “But I think he came pretty close to saying that.” She said the report offers a “solid plan” to restore Fraser salmon runs – if the federal government implements it and stops gutting research and habitat protection provisions. “We have an ecologically ignorant federal government right now, so I’m wary,” Wilhelmson said. “Anyone who has skin in the game of sockeye salmon on the Fraser River has to put public pressure on this government in Ottawa to make sure this report gets legs and keeps moving,” added Sto:lo fisheries advisor Ernie Crey. said. “Or else it will surely sit on a shelf.” Cohen was appointed by the federal government after less than 1.5 million sockeye returned in 2009, far fewer than the more than 10 million expected.

Fireworks seized

On Halloween night, Abbotsford Fire Rescue and city bylaws officials confiscated approximately 50 pounds of fireworks. Members of these agencies joined Abbotsford Police on patrol on Oct. 31, to target fireworks infractions. The possession of fireworks without a permit is against city bylaws. “With Halloween over, fire rescue, bylaws and police are preparing for further enforcement over illegal fireworks use, and caution Abbotsford residents as they make plans to celebrate Diwali,” said deputy fire chief Mike Helmer in a press release. No serious injuries or damaged structures were reported as a result of fireworks discharge, but officials responded to the report of a 15-year-old girl who

was reportedly targeted by unknown youths using fireworks. The girl’s clothes were burned after fireworks were lit near her. She was not injured, and the incident was investigated by police. “Residents and especially parents of younger children and teens need to be aware of the risks associated with fireworks use,” said the release. “Fireworks are essentially small explosive devices that can produce devastating injuries that often result in permanent damage and disfigurement or even death.” The unauthorized use of fireworks in Abbotsford includes possession, sale or discharge, and is strictly prohibited. The bylaw allows for a fine of $200 for unlawful possession or discharge, and $500 for selling or failing to surrender.

Treat veterans with honour

On Sunday many of us will gather around cenotaphs and in city squares for solemn ceremonies paying tribute to Canada’s service men and women. We’ll hear words like sacrifice and honour, some of them uttered by politicians. But for some veterans they’ll ring hollow. In 2006, Parliament unanimously passed the New Veterans Charter that changed the way injured soldiers are compensated. Instead of a lifetime pension, indexed to inflation, veterans injured after that year, or who had their injury diagnosed since then, would get a lump sump settlement. Veterans Affairs champions the new system as “a more complete approach to helping our men and women injured in the line of duty,” offering them “real hope.” But some injured veterans say otherwise. They say Canadian soldiers injured in Afghanistan, and those suffering the lingering mental and emotional effects of their tour are getting substantially less support than they would have received

with the former indexed pension. A study by Queen’s University last year concluded most disabled soldiers will receive only two-thirds the compensation under the New Veterans Charter than they would have received from the old act. Recently Canada’s Auditor-General criticized the Canadian Forces and Veterans Affairs for their shoddy treatment of injured veterans, saying the system to get them help is “complex, lengthy and challenging to navigate.” Even in death, the indignities continue. A program that is supposed to contribute just over $3,600 to the funeral costs for destitute ex-soldiers has rejected more than two-thirds of funding requests since 2006. Even when approved, that money is still less than some social services departments will pay towards the burial of the homeless. It’s one thing for Canada’s politicians to honour our veterans. It’s another to treat them with honour. —Black Press

Other Hand While there appeared to be a great deal of short-term angst emanating from the recent major earthquake off Haida Gwaii, at least in the way of preparedness for the ‘really big one,’ I’d guess that for most the issue is now on the back burner. I’ve got to admit I thought about what I’d need, should the shaker cause my house to collapse (without me in it, of course), and if that occurred I’m sure my home would be irrelevant among the damage caused across the Lower Mainland. However, a mental inventory (though no action) was taken of what would be accessible to me in the event of such disaster. The most important object on my list was keeping the gas tank on my truck full. It would be a ready source

of fuel for generators, chainsaws and other devices, in addition to possibly keeping a pressure lantern working (though I don’t recommend that as a practice other than during a disaster). As for water, I’m fortunate to have a well that, with buckets or aforesaid generator, will keep me supplied. My garage, like so many others, is filled with ‘junk’ rather than as a place to park and as it would be the least likely of my house structure to collapse, gives me ready accessibility to a freezer full of food, chainsaws and other handy equipment. The saw, should the need arise, would come in handy cutting through the wreckage to get to tents, sleeping bags, propane stoves and other camping gear (already stored in totes so I’m always ready at a moment’s notice to head off to the boonies should the opportunity arise). The garage also holds a number of folded tarps (living in the country, you can never have enough of them), as does the garden shed. The truck can also provide a warm refuge. Its radio eliminates the need

for portables or the infernally useless hand-cranked units. There’s always a couple of flashlights in the cab, and the ‘dry box’ in the box contains enough gear to get through almost any emergency. When you travel the remote backcountry in

cash – debit and credit cards have virtually eliminated that practice – but I’m now thinking a little stash of folding money might come in handy when the power grid fails. In other words, if the life ‘goes to hell in a handbasket’ for a few days thanks to a significant tectonic shift, I’m about as prepared as can be. Of course if all this happens while I’m abed, and the roof falls in, earthquake ‘preparedness’ would be the least of my concerns. On the other hand, south of the border today there is a great deal of shaking going on that will require preparedness. Not only could there be a significant tsunami of change in Washington, D.C., the State of Washington is likely to approve the unprecedented: legalized and potentially taxed marijuana in the U.S. And if both Washington and Colorado voters decide to repeal its prohibition, can B.C. be far behind? If I were in the greenhouse industry I’d be getting prepared.

Local citizens ‘no fun’

Back in April, when it was announced that “A Chorus Line” was coming to the AESC, I was the first in line to buy tickets. Finally, Abbotsford was going to get a real Broadway quality show! Imagine my disappointment when the day before the show was due to come, I received a phone call from the AESC saying that the show had been cancelled. Surprise, surprise – it had been cancelled due to poor ticket sales. We had an amazing opportunity to be able to stay in our own town and see a show that ran for over 6,100 performances on Broadway, won nine Tony Awards,

and still holds the records as one of the longest running shows on Broadway, and we blew it. I know that ticket sales for the Heat hockey games have been low for a variety of reasons – people are resentful of the money spent on the arena, and the Heat are not the Canuck affiliate – but when an opportunity to see a performance like this can’t get enough butts in the seats, that’s pretty sad. People say that Abbotsford is a no-fun town? I beg to differ. I think it is the citizens that are no fun. Kim Schuurman

When you enter a nursing home and look at all these aged, infirm and ill residents, you see people who (for the most part) have been hardworking, contributing members of society for 60-plus years. They have earned the right to be treated with the respect due them,

the right to compassionate care. While I feel compassion for those led to a criminal life because of fear, neglect, lack of education and resources, incarceration is a punishment. You voluntarily ceded your rights to the privileges and freedoms afforded a law-abiding citizen. Short of DNA evidence clearing an

accused or convicted person, you are where you chose to be. This is not supposed to be a luxurious stay in a retreat for quiet contemplation. If your confinement results in personal growth and a changed attitude, wonderful. But if you find it uncomfortable to do the time, don’t commit the crime. D. Ward

Teens reach new heights

As Breanna Longden watched her peers making their way across the Bosun’s Steps she was sure she would never be able to do it. They were 33 feet off the ground, crossing an open expanse on nothing more than a series of wooden slats suspended by rope. Longden, who lives in Mission, was taking part in a teambuilding day at Camp Squeah in Hope, as part of Youth Keep Working (YKW), an Abbotsford-based employment program for youth with multiple barriers to employment. The day included several activities that required the seven participants to challenge themselves individually and to work together as a team. The high ropes course proved to be the biggest challenge for Longden. “It was way beyond my boundaries,” she recalls, but by the end ofINAthe L >>> day, ORIG she conquered the Bosun’s Steps and much more. “Once I was up there, I didn’t want to disappoint myself or the others.” YKW is offered through Agora E m p l o y m e n t Essentials Inc. in Abbotsford, a company wholly owned by Mennonite Central Committee BC to deliver its employment programs, and provides life and employability skills training to youth, assisting to connect them with paid employment or return to school. The drivers of older model cars which are favoured by thieves could get an early Christmas present – a free steering wheel lock. The Abbotsford Police Department will be making a concerted effort to

equip owners of the top five most frequently stolen vehicles with free anti-theft devices. Although vehicle thefts are down 44 per cent in 2012 compared to 2011, the APD believes that more can be

done, said a police press release issued Thursday. If owners of pre2001 Honda Civics and Accords, Dodge pickups, Dodge caravans and Ford pickups all used these anti-theft devices, auto thieves would almost be completely “locked out” in Abbotsford, say police. Explosions across the border The U.S. Air Force gave Abbotsford residents a good scare on Halloween. Several people had reported hearing loud “explosion” like sounds in South Abbotsford on Wednesday afternoon. Phone calls and Facebook postings to the Abbotsford News described the noises as “ground shaking.” The Abbotsford Police received similar calls. “We were able to determine that the loud bangs were emanating from the U.S. side of the border and let emergency responders in Washington State know about it,” said Abbotsford Police Const. Ian MacDonald. But Deputy Fire Chief Mike Helmer said the mystery was quickly solved.

Fire damages home

An Abbotsford home sustained major damage due to a basement fire Friday morning. The blaze was reported to Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service at about 10:30 a.m. after a helicopter pilot flying over the area noticed smoke coming from the house at 857 Bradner Rd. Deputy Fire Chief Mike Helmer said that due to the large amount of items in the basement, the fire grew and caused major smoke damage to the entire house. Thirteen trucks and 35 firefighters were on the scene to battle the blaze. Damage is estimated at $250,000.

“We’ve been advised that it’s the U.S. Air Force doing some testing south of the border. And the testing would probably, most likely be some form of explosive,” explained Helmer. He added that it would have been “nice” to have been informed ahead of time. “But they didn’t.”

Council of Shopping Centres Maple Leaf Awards in the advertising category, for the campaign Project Happy. The advertising category recognizes strategic communications that advertise a shopping centre or company to its target market. Project Happy was developed as a result of a research study and the need to re-brand the centre. The new branding campaign, targeted at females and families, was upbeat and featured fun new imagery, designed to make those who visited Sevenoaks Shopping Centre happy. Professional recognition for this program was given to Tricia Dumouchel, marketing director for Morguard Investments. ICSC announced the winners during a ceremony at its Canadian convention in Toronto. In addition, all gold award winners are automatically entered to win ICSC’s VIVA Best of the Best Award. The Abbotsford Heat’s two-game sweep of the Toronto Marlies last week was marked by memorable offensive performances. On Thursday, the Heat gave new life to the term “quick-strike offence,” setting an AHL record by scoring two goals in three seconds. With the score knotted at zeroes and the Marlies on a power play early in the third period, defenceman Steve McCarthy e the rush r o M line joined and took a on ws.com lead pass from abbyne Carter Bancks, then slipped a backhander between the legs of Marlies goalie Ben Scrivens on the breakaway. On the ensuing centreice faceoff, Heat centre Ben Street chopped the puck ahead and caught Scrivens napping. The Marlies keeper may have been watching a replay of the previous goal on the jumbotron, and remarkably, Street’s long shot found its way into the cage. “Who’s ever seen that before?” marvelled Heat goalie Barry Brust, who posted a 22-save shutout in Abbotsford’s 3-0 victory. “That was pretty weird. I’m just glad it wasn’t me.” The previous AHL record for the fastest two goals by the same team was five seconds, and had been accomplished several times – most recently, by the Worcester IceCats in 2003. The NHL record was set by the Minnesota Wild on Jan. 21, 2004 against the Chicago Blackhawks, when

Jim Dowd and Richard Park also scored three seconds apart. That matches the Heat’s feat, but Park’s goal was an empty-netter. Abbotsford’s goals were both on a goalie, and shorthanded – factors which surely make the sequence unique in the history of the pro game. The Hawks, the topranked AAA team in the province, wrapped up conference play with a 35-14 win over Lord Tweedsmuir of Surrey on Friday. QB Mario Narte ran for two touchdowns and passed for two more to Clovis Lumeka and Chris Brake, while tailback Maleek Irons turned in a typically outstanding performance with 221 rush yards and one TD. Levi Hua (six tackles) and Sheridan Lawley (two sacks) led the defence. Mouat has a bye to open the playoffs, but their lone loss of the season – 32-28 to St. Thomas More on Oct. 5 – has yielded a tougher post-season road. It wasn’t so long ago that the University of the Fraser Valley basketball teams were the new kids on the block in the Canada West conference. But it’s the Mount Royals Cougars who are in that vulnerable position right now, and the Cascades took full advantage. UFV’s nationally ranked women’s and men’s hoops teams swept all four games at Mount Royal as the Calgary-based school made its Canada West regular season basketball debut. The Cascades women, ranked No. 3 in the nation, spanked the Royals by huge margins both nights – 71-49 on Saturday and 79-49 on Sunday. Courtney Bartel notched a double-double in the opener with 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Nicole Wierks (12 points) and Aieisha Luyken (10) also scored in double figures. ALBION, Donald. We sadly announce the passing of our father on Thursday, Nov. 1, 2012, at The Cottage Pavilion, in Abbotsford, B.C. at the age of 97 years. Don was predeceased by Nellie, his loving wife of 53 years and two sons. He is survived by his son Don Jr. and family and his daughter, Shelly and her family. At Don’s request, no formal service is planned, but a gathering will take place next Spring, to inter his and Nellie’s cremated remains at Hatzig Cemetery in Mission. Don’s family wish to express their heartfelt thanks to the staff of The Cottage, for the wonderful care he received while there.

Charles Mitchell Dunlop, late of Abbotsford, British Columbia, passed away on October 7, 2012 at the age of 89. He is survived by his two daughters, Lin James ( Daniel ) and Marilyn Merrett. Grandchildren, Heather Merrett, Kris James, Sharlene James, and Jacques Falardeau. Great grandchildren, Elizabeth and Joshua Staetter. He was predeceased by his wife of 52 years Gladys Elda Dunlop (nee Hubbs), born in Indian Head, Saskatchewan. Charlie was born in Victoria, BC to parents Charles Mitchell Dunlop of Scotland and Mary Josephine Scarborough of England. They moved to Vancouver when he was young and he found work as a caddy at Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club. This is where his love of the game started. He was an avid golfer and a good one as the many trophies attests to. He was a member at Chilliwack Golf and Country Club for many years. In his later years he became very involved with the Junior Programme at Valley Driving Range and enjoyed teaching and socializing there. He joined the Seaforth Cadets at the age of 15 and enlisted in the military in 1940 at the age of 17 ½. When the call came in 1942, he volunteered and joined the FSSF (First Special Service Force), the joint Canadian / US task force and went to Helena, Montana for his training. England, Italy, Sicily and North Africa were areas he “visited”. The majority of his peace time service was with the Queens Own Rifles. Charlie was a proud soldier, with a strong sense of honour and he served his country 30 years in both war and peace time. Charlie also worked for Matsqui Correctional Institute from 1975 - 1984. A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, November 29, 2012 at 2:00pm at Henderson’s Fraser Valley Funeral Home, 34537 Marshall Road, Abbotsford, BC. Myla Genevieve Mehain (nee Easton) was born July 29, 1936 in Assiniboia, Saskatchewan, daughter of George and Annetta Easton. She is predeceased by her brothers, Terry, and Brian Easton. Myla passed away peacefully in Abbotsford Regional Hospital on November 2, 2012 ending her struggle with cancer. She is survived by her loving husband, George, of 57 years, and sons Jeff (Carrie), Paul, Patrick (Adriana), and daughters Robin (Norm), and Valisa (Bob), and their 8 grandchildren, Erika, Erin, Rachel, Emma, Sidney, Vincent, Kayleb, and Lyla-Love. Myla was a woman of many talents starting out as a telephone operator where she met the love of her life, George. They soon married and started their family, and picked up roots and moved to Nanaimo where they operated a motel before settling in Langley, BC. Myla loved to bake and often entertained. She volunteered at numerous facilities within the church and outside such as the Blind Club. She was always ready to tell a story and make somebody smile with her infectious laugh. She loved to travel and they made many friends along their ways across the US and Canada in their trailer. Many a good time was spent with family in Birch Bay, Washington where the family loved to congregate and have a hot dog or 2, and share a laugh and everyone was always made to feel welcome whether it was at their cabin/trailer or their house. Myla will be sadly missed by all who knew her. She will be missed mostly for her love of life and love of people she knew. She was welcoming and understood the spirit of living a true and happy life. She will always be missed and cherished in our hearts as loving wife, loving mother, and loving Nana. A memorial service will be held today at 1:30 pm, Tuesday, Nov 6, 2012 at Woodlawn Funeral Home, 2310 Clearbrook Rd., Abbotsford. YASSINSKY, Stanley, passed away peacefully at the Cascade Hospice in Chilliwack, B.C. on Monday, Oct. 29th 2012, with his family at his side. Stan was the last surviving member of a family of 5 children born to Peter and Katharine Yassinsky. He is survived by Charlotte, his loving wife of 48 years; his children, David and Fiona (Jon). He leaves, also, his five grandchildren, his extended family and dear friends. Visitation for family and friends, at 11:00 am on Thursday, November 8, in the chapel of First Memorial Funeral Services, 27555 - 31 Ave., in Aldergrove. A Graveside service will follow at 2:00 pm at Mt. Lehman Cemetery. Rev. Darren Derhousoff will officiate.

ROTHNEY George Linklater George Linklater Rothney passed away on October 29, 2012 at Abbotsford Regional Hospital. He was born in Winnipeg Manitoba on November 29, 1920, the third of four children of Dr. William Oliver Rothney and his wife Agnes Brodie Linklater Rothney. George spent his early years in Sherbrooke, Quebec and followed his father into a career in Education after his graduation from Bishop’s University. In 1945 he married Audrey Elaine Robertson in Yarmouth Nova Scotia and together they lived in a number of communities in Quebec before moving to Abbotsford in 1978. He earned a Master’s Degree in Education from Columbia University and spent 35 years as an educator in roles ranging from chemistry teacher, to principal, to district supervisor, to provincial inspector of schools to director general of the Lennoxville District School Board in the Eastern Townships of Quebec. He was honoured by the Quebec Department of Education and his professional colleagues with the Order of Scholastic Merit. George had a great passion for music and over the years he sang as a soloist, in men’s quartets and choirs, and for more than 65 years in church choirs. He thoroughly enjoyed Gilbert and Sullivan operettas and played leading roles in many productions. After his retirement, he and his wife did more traveling. Highlights included a cruise through the Panama Canal and a trip to Maui and they shared many fond memories of their 23 years as snowbirds in Florida and Tucson, Arizona. George was predeceased by his parents, his brothers Gordon and William and his sister Isabel Duffett. George is survived by Audrey, his beloved wife of 67 years, son Tom (Denise) of Chemainus, daughters Linda (the late David Appleton, Andrew Kenyon) of Oakville, Ontario and Susan of Abbotsford, grandchildren Jamie Rothney (Krista Slavinski) of Toronto, Adrienne Haponiuk (Michael) of Edmonton and Jordan Appleton of Oakville, and his three great-grandchildren, Owen Rothney and Zachary and Joshua Haponiuk. George’s faith remained strong throughout his recent illness but he requested that no public memorial be held for him. His loving family will miss him terribly but are comforted by the fact that he is at peace. He was a kind, gentle man who was a wonderful husband and father.
