BUICK ENCORE
CHEVROLET MALIBU
Overall: Buick’s tall, tiny wagon is a radical departure for a brand that’s better known for cranking out big sedans that floated over the road.
Overall: Chevrolet puts fuel performance ahead of horsepower performance as it takes the pulse of a new breed of sedan buyer.
Drivetrain: A 140-horsepower turbo-four works with a six-speed automatic transmission and directs torque to either the front wheels or all four with optional AWD. • The Encore is a uniquely practical small car that can hold lots of gear and can hold its own in the horsepower and fuel economy departments. Also adding to its versatility is available all-wheel-drive. From its oval-shaped “waterfall” grille to the tip of its two-tone bumper, the Encore features a neat blend of stylish design cues with just a hint of ruggedness. The Encore uses the same platform as Buick’s Verano sedan and Chevrolet’s Cruze and Sonic small cars. However, it’s about 18 centimetres longer and 13 centimetres taller than the Sonic hatchback, which gives it far more cargo room with the rear seat in place or folded flat. The front passenger seat folds flat so that ladders and building materials can be more easily accommodated. The cabin is also on the receiving end of one of Buick’s more fashionable interiors and should also be one of the quietest with active noise cancellation that uses ceiling-mounted microphones to detect engine sounds. A special computer then dishes out counteracting sound waves through the audio system. It’s pleasantly surprising that Buick would select the Encore as its initial recipient of this tech. Standard is a 1.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine that generates 140 horsepower and 148 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed automatic is the Encore’s sole transmission choice. When it finally arrives, Encore will be offered in base, Convenience, Leather and Premium trim levels. All will arrive with the usual air/cruise/tilt/power accessories plus 10 airbags and standard 18-inch wheels. From that point, depending on the designation, you select dual-zone climate control, power sunroof, navigation system, leather-trimmed interior, power-adjustable driver’s chair, heated steering wheel, premium Bose sound system, to name just a few. In other words, stepping up past the $25,000 base price (including destination charges) will allow you to outfit the Encore with the kind of luxury trappings that both traditional and non-traditional buyers expect in an automobile of Buick’s stature.
Drivetrain: Base 197-horsepower four-cylinder; optional 259-horsepower turbo-four; available “mild-hybrid” with 182-horsepower (net). Here, a 2.4-litre four-cylinder is connected to a 15-horsepower electric motor; six-speed automatic transmissions for all.
Base price (incl. destination): $27,000(est.) Type: Four-door wagon sub-compact tall wagon Engine (hp): 1.4-litre DOHC I4 (140) Layout: Front-engine, front- /all-wheel-drive Transmission: Six-speed automatic l/100 km (city/highway): 9.4/7.1 (est.) Safety: Front airbags; front/rear side-impact airbags; front knee airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control Weight (kg.): 1360 (est.)
• The latest Malibu represents a direction-changing model, especially in its powerplant lineup with the emphasis on fuel efficiency. For 2013, Chevrolet’s mid-size sedan sheds a few centimetres between the front and rear wheels, but is wider by nearly eight centimetres. Along with a broader stance, the result is added interior volume, especially front and rear shoulder and hip room. Inside, the Malibu’s stylists appear to have gone all out to improve on the previous model’s inviting environment while only slightly reducing front and rear legroom. Standard on all but the base model is Chevrolet’s MyLink touch-screen audio/communications system with a faceplate that pivots upward to reveal a hidden 15-centimetre-deep storage area. Camaro influences can be seen in the Malibu’s prominent taillights that are an asterisk in an otherwise conservatively shaped body that mimics the Toyota Camry in many respects. Base engine is a 2.5-litre four-cylinder that makes 197 horsepower, which is up from the previous 169-horsepower four-cylinder. Optional is a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder rated at 259 horsepower that subs for last year’s 252-horsepower 3.6-litre V6. Also offered is the Malibu Eco that uses General Motors’ mild-hybrid system (called eAssist) borrowed from the Buick LaCrosse and Regal. The 182-horsepower 2.4-litre four-cylinder gas engine works with a beltdriven 15-horsepower electric motor/generator, replacing the traditional alternator. It feeds off of a lithium-ion battery pack positioned behind the rear seat that slightly reduces trunk space. The battery’s 32 cells weigh about 25 kilograms, but the Malibu’s aluminum hood and rear bumper help slice about 60 kilograms from the car’s total weight. Other Eco technologies include stop/start that shuts off the engine when the vehicle is at rest, then fires it up when the brake pedal is released. Base price (incl. destination): $26,450 Type: Four-door sedanBase Engine (hp): 2.5-litre DOHC I4 (197) Optional engine (hp): 2.4-litre DOHC I4 w/electric assist (182); 2.0-litre DOHC I4, turbocharged (259). Layout: Front-engine, front-wheel-drive Transmissions: Six-speed automatic l/100 km (city/highway): 9.2/5.7 (2.5) Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control Weight (kg): 1,540

CHEVROLET VOLT
CHEVROLET SPARK Overall: Chevrolet’s Korea-built tiny hatchback ignites the brand’s small-car lineup that includes the Sonic sedan and hatchback and Cruze sedan.
Overall: If a receptacle is nearby and you don’t travel too far in the run of a day, this sedan might never use a drop of gasoline ever again; if you need it, though, the Volt can take you 500 kilometres.
Drivetrain: A tiny 1.2-litre four-cylinder generates 85 horsepower and is likely the smallest engine ever to wear the Bowtie badge; five-speed manual transmission, or available four-speed automatic.
Powertrain: Recharge the battery at home to take you 65 kilometres on electricity; four-cylinder gas power-generator engine provides electricity once the battery runs out; no range anxiety; eight-year, 160,000-kilometre battery warranty.
• The urban jungle is becoming increasingly tougher to navigate these days. Fuel is pricey, the streets are clogged to the limit and parking costs are ridiculous. Sometimes, survival requires a minimalist transportation module with maximum space for people and cargo. For both urbanites and suburbanites alike, the Chevrolet Spark is now at your service. The littlest Chevy’s boxy design helps it deliver an impressive level of usable volume in the least amount of space. In fact, the car is nearly 15 centimetres taller than a Mini Cooper, but is slightly shorter overall and offers less distance between the front and rear wheels. With the rear seat in place, you’ll find only minimal stowage area in back, but accommodating life’s bulky items is just a split-folding-rearbench away. The rear door handles have been cleverly integrated as part of the window frame, giving the car a two-door appearance. Up-level Sparks come with added visual enhancements, including rocker panel moldings, roof rails and chrome trim. Inside, the single-pod speedometer, adjacent tachometer/fuel gauge plus a trio of temperature and ventilation control knobs are done up in a contemporary style. An eighteen-centimetre touch-screen operating the audio, navigation and hands-free communications systems can also be added. In keeping with the Spark’s modest transportation role, a 1.2-litre four-cylinder generates an equally modest 85 horsepower and 82 pound-feet of torque. A five-speed manual transmission, or optional four-speed automatic directs power to the front wheels, but the manual provides the best combination of performance and fuel efficiency. The standard feature list includes air conditioning, power windows, ambient interior lighting, front disc brakes and 10 airbags, including knee protection for both front occupants. On the options list are remote keyless entry, leather-like seat covers, heated front seats, alloy wheels and a premium audio package. Base price (incl. destination): $15,000 Type: Four-door hatchback Engine (hp): 1.2-litre DOHC I4 (85) Layout: Front-engine, front-wheel-drive Transmissions: Five-speed manual; four-speed automatic (opt.) l/100 km (city/highway): 7.1/5.2 (MT) Safety: Front airbags; front/rear side-impact airbags; front knee airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lockbrakes; traction control; stability control Weight (kg): 1,050
Base price (incl. destination): $43,000 (excl. federal and/or provincial government rebates, 2012) Type: Four-door hatchback sedan Engine (hp): 111-kilowatt (150-horsepower) electric motor) plus 60-kilowatt (80-horsepower) 1.4-litre DOHC gasoline generator Layout: Front-engine, front-wheel-drive Transmission: Single-speed controller l/100 km (city/highway): 2.3/2.5 (all electric) / 6.7/5.9 (gas only) Safety: Front airbags; front-knee airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control Weight (kg): 1,715

• The Volt’s biggest positive has been its have-cake-and-eat-it-too technology. The on-board batteries provide power to the electric motor for about 65 kilometres of combined city/highway driving, after which a 1.4-litre four-cylinder gasoline generator engine kicks in to charge the lithium-ion battery pack. Total range is estimated at about 500 kilometres before the generator engine needs refueling with premium gas or the 180-kilogram T-shaped battery located beneath the floor needs charging. “Fuel economy” is an obsolete term as it pertains to the Volt, although it’s claimed that the operational cost per kilometre with electricity is a fraction of that of a regular internal combustion engine. When the generator is called in to charge the batteries, the common number used is about 5.0 l/100 km. The generator engine is rated at 60 kilowatts, or the equivalent of 80 horsepower, while the electric motor produces 111 kilowatts (150 horsepower) and 273 pound-feet of torque. The one aspect of the Volt that’s similar to a conventional hybrid is that battery charging occurs when the brakes are used. A single-speed controller replaces a traditional transmission to engage the front drive wheels. However, the operator can select Normal, Sport or Mountain mode with the latter providing extra power on steep grades. Commuters who want to simply plug in the Volt each night for the next day’s drive need no special gear as they can tap right into a standard 120-volt electrical outlet that charges the batteries in about 10.5 hours. However that time is cut to three to four hours when using the optional 240-volt charging “station” (which costs about $2,000, installed). On the road, the only sound comes from the whirring electric motor, and even that noise is muted through the use of special sound-deadening materials. However, drivers can activate a warning horn “chirp” to alert pedestrians that the silent-running Volt is nearby. Standard content includes climate and cruise control, premium Bose audio system, navigation package and eight standard airbags (including front-passenger knee bags). Perforatedleather seats (heated in front), front and rear park-assist camera and polished aluminum wheels are some of the few available options.

(MS) -- As the motor vehicle industry continues to evolve, the emphasis drivers and manufacturers place on safety continues to increase. But even though technological advancements have vastly improved driver safety, accidents still happen. One of the more concerning trends with regards to traffic accidents is when they occur. In spite of the fact that there are five times as many motorists during the day, statistics indicate that one-third of all accidents and roughly half of all traffic fatalities occur at night. Though that might seem counterintuitive, this peculiarity can largely be traced to a driver’s visual acuity, which is reduced by 70 percent at night. Simply put, the human eye is not adapted for nocturnal vision, so drivers must take steps to improve their vision and visibility within their vehicle. The following are just a few of the ways drivers can do just that. * Replace headlight bulbs every two years. Addressing automobile lighting is one of the most underperformed vehicle maintenance tasks. In fact, many drivers do not even consider replacing their headlight bulb until it fails. But as a bulb ages, its light output is drastically reduced by a host of factors, including humidity, electrical resistance and filament fatigue. Industry experts recommend replacing headlight bulbs every two years, and motorists should add bulb inspection and/or replacement to their list of routine maintenance tasks. * Upgrade your headlight bulbs. Perhaps the best way drivers can improve nocturnal vision is to upgrade their headlight bulbs. Philips, a leading innovator of automotive lighting, makes a series of upgrade headlight bulbs that put out more light and create longer beam patterns than the standard halogen bulb found on many of today’s vehicles. Philips even produces a special headlight bulb for motorcycles that not only improves vision but creates a unique orange reflection that helps distinguish the motorcycle from other vehicles on the road.
for a safer ride
* Inspect and replace wiper blades when necessary. Similar to headlight bulbs, wiper blades are often overlooked when it comes to vehicle maintenance. But many motorists would be shocked to discover that industry experts recommend wiper blades be replaced at the change of each season or on three month intervals. That’s because the longer a wiper blade is on the vehicle, the more brittle and ineffective it becomes, putting drivers and passengers at risk. Drivers can also purchase inexpensive treatments designed to make the rubber more pliable and extend the life of the wipers. In addition, when inspecting or replacing wiper blades, top off the windshield washer fluid as a precautionary measure. * Install daytime running lights, or DRLs. While many drivers will admit to having trouble driving at night, just as many, if not more, might also concede they struggle with visibility at dusk or even during the day. But DRLs operate whenever the vehicle is moving, helping to increase visibility during the day and at dusk. While most DRLs are based off the car’s headlights, causing the headlights to wear down over time, the new LED DayLight DRLs from Philips operate on their own and use high powered LEDs which draw less power from the vehicle. These LEDs are incredibly bright for maximum visibility in daylight and have a much longer life expectancy than headlight bulbs. * Clean interior glass and mirrors. Another way to improve visibility is to clean interior glass to remove any film buildup that can reduce vision and create a hazy reflection from the sun. This is especially important for motorists who smoke in the car, as this film is typically thicker. When addressing interior glass, take the time to adjust all side and rearview mirrors properly to cover all of the views around the car, especially the blind spots.

DODGE RAM 1500 4X4
DODGE DART Overall: Talk about a marriage; Chrysler pulls out a name from the past and merges it with it a modified Alfa Romeo platform.
Overall: A major series of upgrades for the Ram pickup includes a lighter, stronger frame, more aerodynamic body and a more efficient base engine.
Drivetrain: Base and optional four-cylinder engines, ranging from 160-184 horsepower; six-speed manual and available automatic transmissions, except top-level R/T that uses a twin-clutch automated manual.
Drivetrain: Creaky old 215-horsepower 3.7-litre V6 is replaced with a 305-horsepower Chrysler 3.6-litre V6; eight-speed automatic transmission and other countermeasures help Ram reduce fuel consumption to respectable levels; “Hemi” V8 will get the eight-speed automatic also.
• The creation of the new Dodge Dart has everything to do with both Chrysler/Dodge and Alfa Romeo being a part of the Italy-based Fiat automotive group. Although the Dart and Alfa’s Giulietta share the same basic platform, the Dart has its own distinctive sheetmetal, interior and powerplant selection. It is also built at a Chrysler assembly plant in Illinois. The Dart’s importance can be overstated enough, since Chrysler hasn’t had a compact sedan in play for about seven years. The Dart name will probably resonate with older customers, although many younger car buyers will likely miss the connection completely. Turning a Giulietta into a Dart involved increasing the platform length by 30 centimetres inches and the width by five centimetres. The result, claims Dodge, is a car with segment-leading scale, beating such small-car luminaries as the Toyota Corolla, Honda Civic, Hyundai Elantra and Chevrolet Cruze. The cabin design is a standout, with futuristic-looking gauges, non-traditional control-panel displays and a unique storage area beneath the front passenger seat-cushion. The base engine is a 160-horsepower 2.0-litre four-cylinder that’s standard with SE, SXT, Rallye and Limited trim levels. All can be upgraded to a 1.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder that’s rated at the same 160 horses, but leads in the torque department with 184 pound-feet to 145. Exclusive to the sportier R/T is a 184-horsepower 2.4-litre four-cylinder. All three choices represent pretty powerful stuff for this class, which will be important as even the lightest Dart out-hefts most of its peers by a good 150 kilograms. A six-speed manual transmission is standard with all engines, while a sixspeed automatic is optional with all but the R/T’s 2.4-litre unit. That engine can be had with an available six-speed automated manual gearbox. Base Darts are pretty basic, but on par with others in the category. The options list incorporates air conditioning, heated steering wheel, driver-selectable information screen, push-button start, soft Nappa leather seat covers, backup camera and trailer sway control that prevents your load from wiggling about. Base price (incl. destination): $17,500 Type: Four-door sedan Base Engine (hp): 2.0-litre DOHC I4 (160) Optional engines (hp): 2.4-litre DOHC I4, turbocharged (160); 2.4-litre DOHC I4 (184, R/T) Layout: Front-engine, front-wheel-drive Transmissions: Six-speed manual; six-speed automatic (opt.); six-speed automated manual (std. on R/T) l/100 km (city/highway): 8.1/5.4 (2.0, MT) Safety: Front airbags; front/rear side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; front knee airbags; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control Weight (kg): 1,460
• The Ram 1500 often runs third in the three-horse truck race against Ford and Chevrolet/GMC, but it sells in respectable quantities. Its one big weak spot, fuel consumption, has been rectified for 2013 with Chrysler’s ever-popular 3.6-litre V6 that bumps the ancient 3.7-litre V6 out of the lineup. Horsepower climbs 42 percent to 305 from 215 and fuel performance similarly improves to 11.4 l/100 km city and 7.8 highway, compared to 15.0/10.0. Along with a more efficient V6, the Ram gets a new eight-speed automatic transmission that will also be attached to the 395-horsepower 5.7-litre “Hemi” V8. It can shut down four of its eight cylinders when not needed, such as at under light-load conditions or when headed downhill. A dash-mounted rotary shifter replaces the traditional column and console shifter. Returning in limited use is the 4.7-litre V8 rated at 310 horsepower. It’s linked to a sixspeed automatic. For 2013, Rams get further fuel-reduction assistance including stop-start technology that turns off the engine at rest, then instantly fires it up again once the brake pedal is released. Electric power steering cuts parasitic power losses. Subtle aerodynamic body improvements and active grille shutters help, too. Optional is an air suspension with load leveling and five height settings, one of which lowers the body at highway speeds by 1.5 centimetres to cut the wind a bit better. Finally a new thermal management system is designed to quickly get the Ram’s crankcase oil and other fluids up to operational temperatures, which assists in conserving gas. Rams now ride on a lighter (by 14 kilograms) and stronger frame and the use aluminum suspension components save another 12 kilograms. As for body styles, regular- cab models are available with 6’4” (193-centimetre) or eight-foot-long (244-centimetre) pickup beds, while Quad Cabs are attached to the shorter box only. The Ram Crew gets you a 5’7” (170-centimetres) bed, or a new-for-2013 6’4” (193-centimetre) bed option. There are also available locking storage compartments built into the rear fenders that can each hold up to 120 standard-size beverage cans that can now be specified with centrally controlled power locks. When it comes to four-wheel-drive, buyers can choose between a part-time system and an on-demand setup that automatically engages when road conditions warrant. Base price (incl. destination): $28,500 Type: Two- /four-door pickup Base Engine (hp): 3.6-litre DOHC V6 (305) Optional engines (hp): 4.7-litre SOHC V8 (310); 5.7-litre OHV V8 (395) Layout: Front-engine, rear- /four-wheel-drive Transmissions: Eight-speed automatic (3.6, 5.7); six-speed automatic (4.7) l/100 km (city/highway): 11.4/7.8 (3.6, 4x2) Safety: Front airbags; impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control. FORD ESCAPE
FORD FUSION
Overall: Ford devises a daring Escape plan that nails it for style and fuel-pump avoidance.
Overall: The Fusion challenges for best-in-class fuel economy and best-looking sedan in one shot.
Drivetrain: Plenty of engine choices, all of the four-cylinder variety; the previous V6 and base five-speed manual gearbox are no more.
Drivetrain: A 170-horsepower four-cylinder plus two optional turbocharged four-cylinders worth 179 and 237 horsepower. Arriving in early 2013 year are two gasoline-electric versions of Ford’s hybrid powertrains.
• Ford’s latest Escape represents a clean-sheet design-and-content approach to satisfy the needs of multi-continent buyers. The sleeker look is radically different from the outgoing version’s boxiness, however its slightly larger dimensions have resulted in greater rear-seat room plus slightly more passenger and cargo volume with the rear seat in place or folded flat. The interior is certainly inviting, with an attractively segmented gauge/control panel with asymmetric air vents. The floor shifter’s position at the base of the dashboard partially blocks the heating/ventilation controls, but makes the area designated for cupholders and armrest/storage more accessible. The up-level Titanium model features well-bolstered front seats that are a major advancement over earlier Escapes. The base front-wheeldrive S model runs with a 168-horsepower 2.5-litre four-cylinder, while the front- and all-wheel-drive SE designation uses a 178-horsepower 1.6-litre turbocharged “EcoBoost” four-cylinder. A 237-horsepower turbo four-cylinder (also from Ford’s “EcoBoost” engine lineup) is standard on the SEL and Titanium trims. A hybrid version won’t be available this time since Ford’s C-Max hybrid wagon uses that drive system. Sadly for a few “Escapees”, the six-speed manual gearbox has shifted away from the Escape lineup, leaving only a six-speed automatic (with a detent for manual gear selection) as the sole transmission. A new “Intelligent” all-wheel-drive system can be ordered with the turbocharged models. It continually assesses road conditions and driver inputs “about 20 times faster than the blink of an eye” and can shift up to 100 per cent of the available power to either the front or rear wheels for maximum grip. The Escape is the first Ford to offer both Torque Vectoring Control and Curve Control to help distribute the correct amount of power to each wheel when cornering so that the vehicle maintains its intended path. A dashboard display screen lets the driver know where the power is being distributed. The new-tech gear extends to the option sheet, which is understandably lengthy, considering the Escape’s four distinct trims. But the most unique option is the power liftgate that automatically opens and closes when you shake your foot hokey pokey-style beneath the bumper (great when your hands are full of kids and/or groceries). Base price (incl. destination): $23,050 Type: Four-door compact tall wagon Base Engine (hp): 2.5-litre DOHC I4 (168) Optional engines (hp): 1.6-litre DOHC I4, turbocharged (173); 2.0-litre DOHC I4, turbocharged (237) Layout: Front-engine, front- /four-wheel-drive Transmission: Six-speed automatic l/100 km (city/highway): 9.5/6.3 (2.5, FWD) Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; stability control; traction control Weight (kg): 1,590
• The next-generation Ford’s Fusion represents a merging of high-fashion style with game- altering fuel economy, with significant technological treats coming along for the ride. The sedan’s primary eye-catcher is the dramatic roofline, suggesting kinship with the Audi A7, Volkswagen CC and CLS-class Mercedes-Benz. Another design highlight is the open-mouth grille that greatly differs from the previous triple-bar fixture. The Fusion’s fashion statement extends to the cabin, with its fancier trim, comfier seats and a freshly pressed control panel. The tailors at Ford also let out the Fusion’s pants and lengthened the cuffs a bit. The distance between the front and rear wheels increases by five inches and the width and height by about an inch. Trunk room is the only reduction spot (likely due to a shorter deck), but only by about six per cent. The Fusion joins the Hyundai Sonata and 2013 Chevrolet Malibu in abandoning a V6 option, but eventually there will be no fewer than five distinctive engine picks, including two Prius-like gasoline-electric hybrid systems. It all begins with a 170-horsepower 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine, while1.6- and 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder “EcoBoost” engines, worth 179 and 237-horsepower, respectively, are optional with the latter a requirement for all-wheeldrive Fusions. The 1.6 is billed as the thriftiest of the three, but in terms of fuel savings, the Hybrid and all-new Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid are really where it’s at. They arrive in the first quarter of 2013. Both employ a 141-horsepower 2.0-litre four-cylinder combined with an electric motor to produce 188 net horsepower. The system increases maximum electric-only velocity to 100 km-h from the previous 75, and resets the fuel-economy bar to 4.0 l/100 km in the city and 4.1 on the highway from 4.6/5.4. The Hybrid also bests the league-topping Toyota Camry Hybrid’s 4.5/4.7 rating. The Fusion Energi plug ‘n’ play model use the same basic tech as the Hybrid, but stretches the all-electric range. Newly available communications and safety content includes keep-you-in-line lane-monitoring system, keep-your-distance adaptive cruise control, confidence-boosting parking-spot assist and shoulder-check-augmenting blind spot and cross-traffic alerts. Buyers can also order the latest version of Ford’s “SYNC” voice-controlled communications and entertainment wizard. Base price (incl. destination): $24,100 Type: Four-door mid-size sedan Base Engine (hp): 2.5-litre DOHC I6 (170) Optional engines (hp): 1.6-litre DOHC I4, turbocharged (179); 2.0-litre DOHC I4, turbocharged (237); 2.0-litre I4 with AC electric motor (188, net) Layout: Front-engine, front- /all-wheel-drive Transmissions: Six-speed manual; six-speed automatic (opt.); continuously variable (Hybrid) l/100 km (city/highway): 9.2/5.8 (2.4, MT) Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; front knee airbags; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control Weight (kg): 1,490
FORD F150
FORD SUPERDUTY
Overall: As near enough a full redesign gets in the full-size pickup market, the F-150 gets new styling, more technology and the return of the ultra-luxurious range-topping Limited.
Overall: Despite having the best-selling HD pickup around, Ford wants to poach the high-rolling buyers of GMC’s Denali line.
Drivetrain: The F-150 borrows the 3.7-litre V6 and 5.0-litre V8 from the Mustang, along with a turbocharged 3.5-litre “EcoBoost” V6 from the Flex; the 6.2-litre V8 from the off-road SVT Raptor can be had in upscale models.
Drivetrain: Powerplants consist of a 6.2-litre gas V8 and 6.7-litre turbo-diesel that produces 800 pound-feet of torque; six-speed automatic transmissions connect to both.
• Ford’s plan for its best-selling F-150 follows a simple pattern: update the features one year, revise the engines the next. Sprinkle in some new trims and technology occasionally. Rinse, repeat. For 2013, Ford is betting that a sharper-looking F-150 and reintroducing the full-lux Limited trim will bring even more customers through the door. All models get new trim-specific front grilles, bumpers and wheel designs, but the Limited sure is a head-turner. Available only as a SuperCrew four-door cab, the body-colour moldings, brightwork and 22-inch wheels are set off by segment-first high-intensity-discharge headlights. The interior is highlighted by heated and cooled red and black leather seats, aluminum trim and piano black accents that complement the new MyFord Touch screen on the dash. Limiteds are exclusively powered by the popular 3.5-litre “EcoBoost” twin-turbo V6 with 365 horsepower. But that’ll be more than enough since more than half of F-150’s sold come equipped with a six-cylinder engine, whether the base 3.7-litre or the optional EcoBoost. Those wanting traditional V8 power are spoiled, too, with 5.0-litre or 6.2-litre options readily available in most other trims. The sheer number of F-150combinations is mind-boggling. Not including paint colors and interior trims, there are four box lengths and three cab sizes (regular, extended SuperCab and four-door SuperCrew), not to mention both rear- and four-wheel-drive availability. A 411-horsepower 6.2-litre V8 is standard on the F-150 SVT Raptor 4x4, which is inspired by Ford’s participation in off-road desert racing. Standard gear includes special shock absorbers that stiffen as they compress to keep the truck from bottoming out or becoming too tippy while cornering. That’s a good idea, since there’s more nearly 30 centimetres of suspension travel in front and about 34 in back. The giant 35-inch-tall all-terrain rubber has been mounted to 17-inch wheels that are positioned farther outboard from the fenders to a point where the Raptor’s width has been increased by more than 17 centimetres compared to a standard F-150. Base price (incl. destination): $21,600; $57,600 (Raptor) Type: Two- /four-door pickup Base Engine (hp): 3.7-litre DOHC V6 (302) Optional engines (hp): 3.5-litre DOHC V6, turbocharged (365); 5.0-litre DOHC V8 (360), 6.2-litre SOHC V8 (411) Layout: Front-engine, rear- /four-wheel-drive Transmissions: Six-speed automatic l/100 km (city/highway): 12.7/8.9 (3.7, 4x2) Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags with rollover protection; anti-lock brakes; stability control Weight (kg): 2,125
• Not content with having the most powerful and probably the most capable heavy-duty pickup around, Ford is aiming its Super Duty trucks toward the higher end of the market. A fully loaded GMC Sierra HD 3500 with the ubiquitous Denali package starts well north Of $60,000 and climbs higher very quickly. Ford’s reply is adding a Platinum trim to the SD line with unique styling, different 20-inch wheels, chrome slathered everywhere, while inside features wood trim and high-grain leather cover nearly every surface. Niceties include standard power-adjustable pedals, a rear-view camera, remote start and power telescoping mirrors. The Platinum also gets Ford’s SD-specific version of MyFord Touch, which has larger buttons and knobs for secondary controls that can easily be used with work gloves on. Otherwise, the standard 6.2-litre gasoline V8 that rules the roost with 385 horsepower and 405 pound-feet of torque remains unchanged. Optional is an equally fresh Ford-developed 6.7-litre V8 turbo-diesel that generates a flat 400 horsepower and 800 pound-feet of torque. The engine can run B20 fuel, which contains 80 per cent petroleum diesel mixed with 20 per cent bio-diesel. Payload capacity is up to 2,930 kilograms while the fifth-wheel towing capacity tops out at 11,090 kilograms. Both powerplants are connected to six-speed automatic transmissions. For turbo-diesel applications, there’s an available “Live Drive” power take off (PTO) unit, consisting of an extra transmission output gear that can control accessories such as a snow plow, tow-truck lift or even a dump-truck-style box. Other newfound equipment includes trailer-sway and roll stability control to help keep you and your load shiny-side-up. Hill Start Assist keeps you from rolling backward while stopped on an incline and Hill Decent Control holds the SD at a set speed while traveling down a steep grade. All models — XL, XLT, Lariat and King Ranch — benefit from suspension changes and a new steering gear that Ford says improves ride comfort, surefootedness and steering precision. Base price (incl. destination): $37,100 Type: Two- /four-door heavy-duty pickup Base Engine (hp): 6.2-litre SOHC V8 (385) Optional engine (hp): 6.7-litre OHV V8, turbo-diesel (400) Layout: Front-engine, rear- /four-wheel-drive Transmissions: Six-speed automatic l/100 km (city/highway): n/a Safety: Front airbags; anti-lock brakes Weight (kg): 2,670

HONDA CIVIC
HONDA ACCORD Overall: More of everything Accord buyers have always wanted, but in smaller package. Drivetrain: All new “Earth Dreams” 2.4-litre four-cylinder makes 185-189 horsepower and features an optional continuously variable transmission. Optional V6 remains optional on coupes and sedans. Both plug-in and conventional hybrids arriving in early-mid 2013. • Buyers expecting the ninth-generation Accord to be bigger and bolder will need to adjust their perspective concerning one of North America’s most successful sedan and coupe lines. The U.S.-built (30 years and counting) Accord maintains a conservative presence, while undergoing a metamorphosis in style, features and running gear. The sedan has shrunk nine centimetres in overall length and loses about two centimetres between the front and rear wheels, while gaining and 1.5 centimetres in width. Concurrently, trunk space increases by five per cent, thanks to a more compact rear suspension. The Accord appears more svelte, with less front overhang. The coupe has undergone a more subtle transformation and remains one of the most appealing models of its type on the road. Inside, the artistically sculpted dashboard is thankfully devoid of knob and switchgear clutter. Drivers will be particularly enamored with the clear and crisp white-on-black centre gauges and the 20-centimetre multi-information display screen. All passengers are treated to more comfort, with front-seaters enjoying more supportive buckets. There’s also an extra 2.5 centimetres of legroom for those in back. The base 2.4-litre four-cylinder (labeled “Earth Dreams”) makes 185 horsepower (189 for the Sport model), up from 177. The optional 278-horsepower 3.5-litre V6 gains a mere seven ponies. A six-speed gearbox on four-cylinder Accord sedans and up-level V6 coupes remains available. A continuously variable transmission (CVT) replaces the fivespeed automatic option on all four-cylinder models, but a six-speed automatic remains the only choice for V6 sedans and base V6 coupes. In early 2013, Honda will introduce the Accord plug-in hybrid with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder mated with a 124-kilowatt electric motor for a total of 196 net horsepower. The plug-in can travel up to 24 kilometres on electric-only propulsion, operates on grid juice at up to 60 mph (96 km-h) and has a maximum 800-kilometre range. The clincher is it takes just three hours using120-volt house current to replenish the lithium-ion battery (about 10 minutes for a 50 per cent charge), or about with a 240-volt charger. The plug-in will be followed by a conventional hybrid, giving the Accord a one-two punch in this category. Base price (incl. destination): $27,200 (sedan); $27,900 (coupe) Type: Four-door sedan; two-door coupe Base Engine (hp): 2.4-litre DOHC I4 (185) Optional engines (hp): 2.4-litre DOHC I4 (190); 3.5-litre SOHC V6 (278); 2.0-litre DOHC I4 with 124-kilowatt electric motor (196, net) Layout: Front-engine, front-wheel-drive Transmissions: Six-speed manual; six-speed automatic (opt.); six-speed manual (opt. on V6 coupe) l/100 km (city/highway): 7.8/5.5 (2.4, CVT) Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control Weight (kg): 1,470 (sedan)
Overall: The ninth-generation Civic is still one of the most popular small cars on the road; exterior tweaks and interior upgrades are expected for 2013 sedans and coupes due to arrive later in the 2012 calendar year. Drivetrain: A 140-horsepower four-cylinder carries the ball for most Civic iterations; 110-horsepower gas-electric Hybrid pulls 4.4/4.2 l/100 km city/highway. • Honda got its knuckles rapped shortly after the current-generation Civics arrived for the 2011 model year. Much of the talk has been about the car’s overly plastic dashboard and general physical sameness with the previous Civics. Honda’s brass has promised to address these issues for 2013, but they have yet to show their cards. However, with Civics selling very well these days, don’t expect any wholesale adjustments. Currently both coupes and sedans feature what Honda calls a “one motion profile” sweeping rooflines plus thin roof pillars that help maximize visibility. Compared with the previous models, the sheetmetal on the sedan and slightly shorter coupe is attached to a stiffer platform that reduces the distance between the front and rear wheels a tad. Despite this, inside, Honda increased shoulder and legroom for front- and rear-seat passengers and modestly enlarged the trunk space. The two-tier instrument panel is slightly more formal and the centrally located tachometer is topped by a speedometer and available five-inch screen that displays key operating and audio selection info. Most Civics operate with a 140-horsepower 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine. The sporty Si coupe and Si sedan use a 2.4-litre four-cylinder that generates 201 horsepower and 170 pound-feet of torque. A five-speed manual transmission and optional five-speed automatic are offered in regular-strength Civics, while a six-speed manual gearbox is exclusive to the Si. On the cleaner, greener front, the Civic Hybrid sedan runs with a 1.5-litre four-cylinder that combines with an electric motor to produce 110 horsepower. Honda claims the Hybrid will achieve a 4.4 l/100 km city rating and 4.2 on the highway, compared to the 7.2/5.0 for the base car with the automatic transmission. Base price (incl. destination): $16,500; $19,700 (coupe); $26,500 (hybrid) Type: Two-door coupe, four-door sedan Base Engine (hp): 1.8-litre SOHC I4 (140) Optional engines (hp): 2.4-litre DOHC (201); 1.8-litre SOHC I4, natural gas (113); 1.5-litre SOHC I4 with 23-horsepower electric motor (110, combined) Layout: Front-engine, front-wheel-drive Transmissions: Six-speed manual; six-speed automatic (opt.), continuously variable (Hybrid) l/100 km (city/highway): 7.2/5.0 Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control Weight (kg): 1,200
a great way to find the right ride Cars are among the most expensive purchases a person will make during a lifetime. That said, drivers want to make sure their next vehicle is the right one for them. While research into vehicle safety and performance history is essential, perhaps nothing gives drivers a better idea of how well a car meets their needs and driving style than a test drive. Many dealers allow men and women to test drive vehicles by themselves, allowing buyers to get the feel of a car without feeling pressured or distracted by salesmen. When test driving a vehicle, it’s always good to comparison shop, test driving different vehicles to get a better idea of what’s available. Drivers who have owned and driven the same vehicle for a number of years can be easily overwhelmed when test driving a new car, which is likely more smooth and boasts more amenities than an older vehicle. That’s why it’s important to test drive a handful of new vehicles. This gives drivers a better point of reference for what a new car offers better than its competitors, and not a one-sided issue of what a new car offers compared to an older vehicle. The following are some of the factors to consider when deciding which car to buy.

Visibility Many drivers buying a new car after years driving the same vehicle might find it difficult to judge visibility. Familiarity with an old car can make it hard to get used to a new one. When judging visibility, determine if the view of the road is adequate and if the side and rearview mirrors can meet your needs. Sometimes a rear window is too small for drivers used to bigger rear windows, and this can prove a safety risk down the road. Don’t be distracted by the vehicle’s comfort. If the visibility is poor (and visibility varies for each individual), then the car probably isn’t the right fit.
Comfort Comfort is important for many reasons. Cars are big investments, and drivers have the right to drive a comfortable vehicle. A comfortable ride can also speak volumes about a vehicle’s engineering. If a car is noticeably uncomfortable, drivers should be suspicious about the rest of the vehicle. Suspension plays a role in comfort, but suspension might also depend on the type of vehicle. A sports car, for example, might feel each bump in the road, but the superior handling attracts drivers who revel in acceleration. Comfort often depends on the type of vehicle, and buyers who have a specific type in mind should only test drive vehicles within that type. This will give an idea of which one within a certain category is the most comfortable.
Braking Braking can be hard to evaluate, but it should feel smooth and should not feel as if the car is stopping too fast or too slowly. If possible, bring a passenger along and ask if he or she notices anything when the car brakes.
Handling How a vehicle handles will go a long way toward how it avoids emergency situations on the highway. The vehicle should be easy to maneuver on the road. Take note if the vehicle moves too quickly or too slowly with sudden movements. Unless you experience an emergency while test driving a car, it’s impossible to gauge how a vehicle will respond in an emergency. However, publications like Consumer Reports perform road tests that include emergency handling tests. Such information should be considered before buying a car.

HONDA PILOT
HONDA CR-V Drivetrain: A 185-horsepower four-cylinder connects to a five-speed automatic transmission; all-wheel-drive is available in all trims. • CR-V devotees might have difficulty spotting the current model that arrived for the 2012 model year since it closely mirrors the outgoing model in all key exterior dimensions. The overall shape was only moderately tinkered-with, including updated nose and tail sections plus a dramatically shaped rear roof pillar. Honda claims that the CR-V’s shape, along with modifications to the undercarriage to increase airflow, has reduced fuel-robbing aerodynamic drag by eight per cent when compared to the previous CR-V. The interior provides a slightly enlarged passenger area, but at the expense of slightly reduced cargo space. Maximizing the load floor is a snap with the standard Fold-Down Rear Seat that operates by flipping a pair of levers located just inside the tailgate. The rest of the cabin is standard Honda fare, which translates into an uncluttered (albeit plasticky) dashboard, comfy, supportive seats and generously sized storage compartments, including a large floor-console bin that can hold a purse or other bulky items. Under the hood is a 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine that makes 185 horsepower and 163 pound-feet of torque. Fuel-economy is a Honda trademark, but the company claims that by activating the “ECON” button that alters the transmission and air conditioning functions, drivers can save a bit more. As for function, the lift gate is wide and tall while the cargo area extends more than five feet from the rear with the back seat folded. In base LX trim, the CR-V arrives with a significant amount of standard equipment, while the EX includes a power moonroof, fog lights, navigation and a few other niceties. Popping for the EX-L adds leather seat covers, 10-way heated driver’s seat, up-level audio system and access to the optional navigation system. Touring is the top model. Base price (incl. destination): $27,600 Type: Four-door compact sport-utility vehicle Engine (hp): 2.4-litre DOHC I4 (185) Layout: Front-engine, front- /all-wheel-drive Transmission: Six-speed automatic l/100 km (city/highway): 9.0/6.4 (FWD) Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; stability control; traction control Weight (kg): 1,500
r a C r u o Y Help d Harsh Withstan
(MS) -- Automobiles can be very resilient. Drivers typically don’t treat their cars with kid gloves, but most cars keep chugging along in spite of it. Of course, drivers who treat their cars well can expect to get as much in return from their vehicles. That’s especially true when winter weather arrives, which is the harshest season vehicles must endure every year. Harsh weather coupled with less-than-ideal roadways typically take their toll on a vehicle as the season progresses, and it’s up to drivers to help their cars withstand the elements of winter and make it to spring in drivable condition. Short of moving to a locale that’s warm and sunny 12 months a year, there’s little drivers can do to avoid winter weather; however, there are several ways drivers can prepare their vehicles for the months ahead. * Address your antifreeze. Much like a winter coat protects people from winter weather, antifreeze protects vehicles when the weather outside is frightful. Not every antifreeze is created equal, and inadequate antifreeze can cause water pump failure and even a cracked engine block. Drivers often fail to monitor their antifreeze levels throughout the winter, which can hurt their cars and might even be harmful to the environment. Traditional ethylene glycol, or EG, antifreezes have a sweet smell and taste that attracts animals and, if ingested, can harm local wildlife or even household pets. Propylene glycol antifreeze does not boast a sweet smell or taste, and though safe if ingested, reduces the likelihood that animals will be drawn to it. AMSOIL Propylene Glycol Antifreeze is compatible with all other antifreeze products and does not require a complete system flush before usage, easing the transition from EG antifreeze to a more eco-friendly alternative. * Check the vehicle’s charging system. Car batteries are forced to work harder in cold weather, making it easier for a battery to die when the mercury drops. To avoid being stranded in the cold, ask your mechanic to check the vehicle’s charging system before the onset of winter to ensure the battery is ready for the cold months ahead.

Overall: Honda’s eight-passenger Pilot program for 2013 mostly involves staying the course regarding physical or mechanical updates; Bluetooth wireless interface and a rear-view camera head the list of new standard features. Drivetrain: The 250-horsepower 3.5-litre V6 comes with cylinder deactivation that shuts down two or three cylinders under light load conditions to save fuel; all-wheel-drive option adds extra bad-road, lousy-weather pluck. • Let the other car-based tall wagons claim they can do it all; the Honda Pilot matches or surpasses them for all-weather, all-road competency, passenger capacity and fuel-stretching capability. The Pilot features the whole stubby-nose, upright-roof-pillars and wheel-openings-pushed-outward-in-true-off-roader-tradition kind of thing. Short front and rear body overhang allows Pilot pilots to traverse deeper ruts and gullies when heading into the back woods. But what about on the highway where the Pilot will spend most of its life? The race-track-tested platform was considerably stiffened for its 2012 facelift and is similar to that used by the Acura MDX (Acura is Honda’s upscale division). Modest calibration changes that were introduced to the suspension afforded a more supple ride. The upscale interior provides reasonable leg and knee room for secondand third-row riders, although those at the far end lose some precious head, shoulder and hip space. Still, eight-occupant seating is impressive in this class of vehicle and out-accommodates the Toyota Highlander, Hyundai Santa Fe and Mazda CX-9, plus other competitors, by one spot. When not needed, the rear seats can be folded flat without removing the headrests, while the liftgate features a convenient glass-hatch opening. The standard 3.5-litre V6 makes 250 horsepower and 253 pound-feet of torque, but the engine also receives the Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) system that imperceptibly switches between three, four and six cylinders, depending on whether the motor is accelerating or cruising at a steady rate. The Pilot is available in either front- and four-wheel-drive, with the latter functioning when tire slip is detected and when accelerating from a stop. The system can also be “locked” in place at speeds below 30 km-h, which is handy when stuck or operating in poor-traction conditions. Hill Start Assist prevents the Pilot from rolling backward on an incline of 10 degrees or greater when the driver’s right foot shifts from the brake pedal to the accelerator. Among the Pilot’s wealth of standard equipment are front and rear air conditioning, tilt/telescopic steering column, trailer hitch and a seven-speaker audio system. For 2013, all models gain Bluetooth audio streaming and Bluetooth short-range wireless networking plus a rear-view camera. Base price (incl. destination): $36,600 Type: Four-door sport utility vehicle Engine (hp): 3.5-litre SOHC V6 (250) Layout: Front-engine, front- /all-wheel-drive Transmission: Five-speed automatic l/100 km (city/highway): 11.8/7.8 (FWD) Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control. * Don’t tread lightly. Tire treads are especially important during the colder months, when icy or snow-packed roads make driving a dangerous undertaking. Tires with adequate traction are better equipped to handle roads that might be covered in ice, dirt or grime from sand and salt trucks. Check tire pressure regularly, especially when the temperatures are colder, and always inflate tires to the manufacturer-recommended PSI. PSI ratings can often be found on the driver’s side door. * Monitor motor oil. An engine is only as good as the motor oil that keeps it lubricated. Poor lubrication results in friction between engine components, ultimately leading to wear and potentially taking years off engine life. Drivers should regularly monitor their motor oil levels and adhere to the manufacturer’s guidelines. When choosing a lubricant, look for a synthetic motor oil to maintain engine protection and performance. Synthetic motor oils provide significant benefits over their conventional counterparts, particularly in colder weather when conventional motor oil thickens as the temperature drops. When the mercury starts to sink, conventional motor oils can slow starting rpm, restrict oil flow to critical engine parts and increase wear on bearings and rings. Conversely, synthetic motor oils still flow or pump at temperatures as much as 50 below zero, allowing cars and trucks to start with greater ease. * Maintain visibility. Visibility is especially poor during the winter months when falling snow and dirt and grime are kicked up from the rear tires of other vehicles, making it difficult to see. To maintain adequate visibility throughout the winter, inspect wiper blades to make sure they are in peak condition. Be sure the blade fully clears the windshield of snow, rain and any other debris that might find its way into your driving line of vision. Never leave the house without enough windshield washer fluid in the reservoir, and keep an extra bottle of fluid in the trunk just to be safe. Winter driving conditions are rarely, if ever, ideal.

GRAND CHEROKEE
WRANGLER
Overall: With class-leading poise and performance, the Grand Cherokee also leads the way in comfort and off-road prowess; new Trailhawk is destined to increase the GC’s gotta-have-it factor.
Overall: To stay on top as on off-roader, the Wrangler introduces significant comfort and convenience improvements for 2013, despite doing quite a lot over the last couple of years.
Drivetrain: Base 3.6-litre V6 is perfect for all-around use; optional 360-horse V8 is a towing and heavy-hauling favourite; The SRT8’s 470-horsepower “Hemi” V8 lights a rocket under the Grand Cherokee’s platform, if that’s your thing.
Drivetrain: The 3.6-litre V6 makes 285 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque; six-speed manual transmissions, or optional six-speed automatics play their part to minimize fuel consumption.
• The Grand Cherokee has been a stalwart performer for Jeep and its Chrysler parent for 20 years. Now into its fourth generation, the rugged five-passenger wagon remains one of the most popular vehicles in its class. The latest version is nearly five centimetres longer and 7.5 centimetres wider than its predecessor and the distance between the front and rear wheels has grown by a considerable 13.5 centimetres, creating much-needed rear-seat knee and leg space. The GC’s on- and off- agility is largely attributable to the various suspension components it shares with the Mercedes-Benz ML-class sport ute (Chrysler was once part of the German automaker). However under the hood, Jeep uses the corporate 290-horsepower 3.6-litre V6 while the 360-horsepower 5.7-litre “Hemi” V8 is optional. All GCs feature five-speed automatic transmissions, even the high-powered SRT8. With a 470-horsepower 6.4-litre Hemi, 20-inch wheels with stickier road-biased tires, upgraded brakes, active suspension and active limited-slip differentials, this is one Jeep that’s as much fun through corners as it is from a standing start. Jeep states the 2,045-kilogram beast will reach 60 mph (96 km-h) in less than five seconds. Other more “normal” GC models - Laredo, Limited, Overland and Overland Summit - are available in either rear- or four-wheel-drive. The new-for-2013 Trailhawk, for serious boulder bashing, includes Kevlar-reinforced Goodyear “Silent Armor” tires, additional off-road undercarriage protection, rear electronic limited-slip differential, Quadra-Drive II four-wheel-drive with air suspension for V8 models (adjusts ride height over a 11.4-centimetre range to a maximum 28 centimetres of ground clearance) and an upgraded traction-control system. Trailhawks also feature uniquely painted black and grey trim with a not-easily-missed black hood decal that Jeep says reduces glare from the sun, thus helping the driver in extreme off-road conditions. Jeep’s Quadra Trac II or Quadra Drive II includes Jeep’s Selec-Terrain control with settings for Sand/Mud; Snow; and Rock for off-road terrain plus a Sport setting for dry pavement. Base price (incl. destination): $39,800 Type: Four-door sport-utility vehicle Base engine (hp): 3.6-litre DOHC V6 (290) Optional engine (hp): 5.7-litre OHV V8 (360); 6.7-litre OHV V8 (470, SRT8) Layout: Front-engine, four-wheel-drive Transmissions: Five-speed automatic l/100 km (city/highway): 13.0/8.8 (3.6) Safety: Front airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; stability control Weight (kg): 2,030
• You could refer to the Jeep Wrangler as the Volkswagen Beetle of the sport utility world because of its longevity. The legendary off-roader enjoys a hard-core following; people who fearlessly dare to use these rugged rascals the way they’re intended. Of course not everyone goes boulder-hopping and canyon-crawling in their Wranglers (the Jeep, not the Jeans), but both groups will appreciate the newly designed seats with improved bolstering (and available Katzkin-brand black leather) in front and added support when the road or trail gets rough. The back seat of the four-door Unlimited model as well as the soft top both now fold more easily using, amazingly, just one hand. Finally both two- and four-door Wranglers can be ordered with a premium top that’s claimed to be easier to clean while its three layers add a degree of noise insulation. Jeep claims the lid is also easier to fasten. (Yes, we had to read that twice, too.) Unchanged is the Chrysler-designed 285-horsepower V6 that connects to either a six-speed manual transmission or optional five-speed automatic. The combo provides for a l/100 km rating of 12.7 city and 9.3 highway (Unlimited models fare a little worse). Base Sport, Sport, Sport S, Sahara and Rubicon trim levels continue; the first two feature part-time four-wheel-drive with optional limited-slip rear differential. The tough-customer Rubicon uses the Off-Road Rock-Trac unit with its extra-low-range gearing, front/rear-locking differentials for greater agility and 32-inch off-road rubber. Base price (incl. destination): $21,300; $26,300 (Unlimited) Type: Two- /four-door sport-utility vehicle Engine (hp): 3.6-litre DOHC V6 (285) Layout: Front-engine, four-wheel-drive Transmissions: Six-speed manual; five-speed automatic (opt.) l/100 km (city/highway): 12.7/9.3 (MT) Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; anti-lock brakes; traction control (opt.); stability control. Preventive Maintenance
to Keep Your Car
Let us give you ... the Quality You Expect and the Service You Deserve
Many motorists bemoan the myriad costs associated with owning a vehicle. According to the National Automobile Dealers Association, the average price for a new car in the United States is slightly more than $28,000. But as any vehicle owner knows, that sticker price is only the beginning. The cost of maintaining a vehicle and keeping it on the road is not exactly insignificant. As the economy begins to rebound, a good percentage of motorists have resolved to keep their vehicles on the road longer in an effort to stretch their automobile dollars. That’s a sound resolution, and one that is not necessarily difficult to accomplish. Contrary to popular belief, cars are built to last, and it’s often a driver’s poor habits that reduce a car’s life expectancy as opposed to the vehicle manufacturer’s product. Drivers can lengthen a vehicle’s lifespan by employing preventive maintenance that should keep a car running strong for years to come.
Air Filter
• FREE Estimates • Insurance Assistance • Courtesy Car and Shuttle Service • Windshield and Glass Replacement
• ICBC and Private Insurance Claims • Private Autobody Work • Paintless Dent Repair
When examining the vehicle’s air filter (check the vehicle manual for location), look for dirt or dust buildup. If the filter is filthy, simply replace it. Auto parts stores sell air filters, and most drivers shouldn’t have trouble replacing a filter by themselves. A dirty air filter can negatively effect fuel economy and make it seem as though a vehicle is constantly going uphill in a stiff wind. When a dirty air filter is replaced, drivers will notice an instant impact in how the car drives and are likely to save a few dollars at the filling station as well.
Belts and Hoses
Issues with belts or hoses are often recognizable to the naked eye, regardless of a driver’s automotive skill. A hose in poor condition can appear bulging or brittle, and should not feel too soft or too hard. If a hose exhibits any of these symptoms, replace it. A belt that’s worn or frayed should also be replaced.
Brake Fluid
250.545.6906 #10 - 1800 Kalamalka Road, Vernon, BC
www.franksautobody.ca
One of the more expensive repair jobs on a vehicle is to replace the brakes. Brakes will need to be replaced over the course of a vehicle’s lifespan, but drivers should routinely check the vehicle’s brake fluid. Without sufficient brake fluid, the brakes’ lifespan decreases dramatically. Checking the brake fluid is easy; simply look in the owner’s manual to find brake fluid reservoir and remove the lid (some vehicles might require the lid be unscrewed). The reservoir will likely have
instructions on the inside advising how much brake fluid should be added. If the fluid is below the line of demarcation, add fluid up to that line. But be careful not to overfill. Check the brake fluid levels on a monthly basis.
Motor Oil
Oil change guidelines have changed dramatically thanks to better cars and more reliable motor oils. But it still helps to check motor oil levels after every fill up. If motor oil levels are low, add more oil. If oil is significantly low after each fill up, consult a mechanic just to be safe.
Exhaust
Once a year, be it at a routine tune up or should repair work be necessary, ask your mechanic to check the vehicle’s emissions. Failing an emissions test might be against the law, and a failed test could be indicative of a larger problem. In addition, inspect the muffler and exhaust pipe for holes, particularly after winter, when debris from snow trucks may do significant damage. Replace any damaged or rusted parts.
Power Steering
Power steering fluid should also be inspected on a monthly basis. When checking power steering fluid, also inspect the pump for any leaks.
Tires
Keeping tires properly inflated pays numerous dividends. Properly inflated tires make it easier for the engine to operate, lowering fuel costs while also decreasing wear and tear on the engine. The owner’s manual should list a recommended tire pressure, and the local filling station likely has an air pump. Maintaining tires also involves checking for wear and tear. Uneven wear could indicate the tires are misaligned. Discuss this with your mechanic.
Transmission Fluid
When checking transmission fluid, do so while the car is running and after the engine has warmed up. Always be certain to put the parking brake on when checking transmission fluid. If the vehicle needs transmission fluid, add the recommended fluid but be careful not to overfill. Prolonging a vehicle’s lifespan is not as difficult as it sounds. Oftentimes, all it takes is minor, yet routine, maintenance to keep a car on the road for years and years.

A One Stop Shop for preserving the appearance of your vehicle It happens all the time, the door ding that mysteriously appears after a trip to the grocery store, the scrape on the bumper from parking to close to the snow bank, or the tear on the seat from moving that box just a little too carelessly. Okay, it’s not big stuff, you’re probably not going to rush to the body shop or call the insurance company but it’s really bugging you. That is where “Auto Cosmedics” fits in. Repairing everything from dents, paint chips, damaged bumpers, worn interiors to windshield chips, that is what they do. Auto Cosmedics is where they “sweat the small stuff”, while major damage still means a trip to the autobody experts this is a cost effective alternative by employing a relatively new technique called Paintless Dent Repair (PDR). By accessing the dent from behind with specialized tools the technician is able to coax out the dent without fillers or paint saving both time and money. When touch-ups are unavoidable Auto Cosmedics is able to computer match the colour with precision on virtually any make or model of vehicle out there today. “I’ve been doing PDR here in Vernon for about 9 years, although the method has been around for about 20 , it still amazes me how many people don’t know about it” said Eric Reckhard, co-owner and PDR technician at Auto-Cosmedics.
It’s not just the exterior that gets special attention at Auto-Cosmedics. Interior repairs like upholstery tears, dash scrapes, leather and vinyl renewal are the domain of interior specialist and co-owner Dave Martin. Rather than replacing expensive upholstery often a repair is a cost effective solution. Years of experience at matching color, fibre and texture has led to amazing re-
sults. Dave recommends that before you store your boat for the winter consider repairing any upholstery rips, because come boating season you’ll be glad you did. Although Auto-Cosmedics is well known for servicing the local car dealerships in Vernon, they have expanded the services they offer to meet the needs of the general public. From their
Fairweather Place location they offer a variety of services that include headlight polishing, windshield chip repair, complete vehicle detailing including paint sealant, chip repair as well as previously mentioned PDR and upholstery repair. “It’s like a One Stop Shop” for preserving the appearance of your vehicle .” said Eric

KIA RIO 5
KIA SPORTAGE Overall: Cooler, sportier, roomier and more costly than the Soul and with optional all-wheel-drive. Drivetrain: Base 2.4-litre four-cylinder or 2.0-litre turbo; four-wheel-drive system can lock up the front and rear axles for improved off-road agility. • It’s tough to fault the Sportage, which covers a fairly broad spectrum of price, features and performance. The base powerplant is a 176-horsepower 2.4-litre four-cylinder that’s hooked to a six-speed manual transmission (available only in base front-wheel-drive models). A six-speed automatic is optional and returns slightly better fuel economy than the manual. Optional is a 260-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder. The Sportage is a front driver by nature, while the optional all-wheel-drive system directs 100 per cent of the engine’s torque to the front wheels until tire slip is detected. At that point, the required power is instantly deployed to the rear wheels. Additionally, a manually selected “Lock Mode” allows for a fixed 50:50 torque split at speeds up to 40 km-h for those times when sustained maximum traction is required. You can get either engine in front- or all-wheel-drive models. The base LX Sportage includes Kia’s UVO in-car hands-free entertainment and communication system along with air conditioning, cruise control, Bluetooth short-range wireless connectivity and Hill Start Assist (that prevents the vehicle from rolling backward down a hill while in gear). Downhill brake control maintains a fixed forward speed without the driver having to touch the brake pedal, which prevents a runaway situation. The EX features dual-zone climate control, power driver’s seat, keyless entry, glovebox cooler, re-tuned high-performance shocks and 18-inch wheels (16s are standard). The EX Luxury adds leather seats and a panoramic sunroof, while the top-line SX features the turbocharged engine, unique body pieces and wheels, and more supportive seats. An upgraded audio system, push-button start or even a cargo cover are all optional, as is a panoramic sunroof, heated and cooled front seats (offered when the leather seat-cover option is specified.) Base price (incl. destination): $23,650 Type: Four-door sport-utility vehicle Base Engine (hp): 2.4-litre DOHC I4 (176) Optional engine (hp): 2.0-litre DOHC I4, turbocharged (260) Layout: Front engine, front- /all-wheel-drive Transmissions: Six-speed manual; six-speed automatic (opt. / std. with turbo) l/100 km (city/highway): 10.0/6.9 (2.4 MT) Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; stability control; traction control Weight (kg): 1,430

Overall: Once merely an inexpensive car, the Rio has grown into a gorgeous compact that you just gotta have. Drivetrain: Just one engine; the 1.6-litre four-cylinder makes 138 horses and goes far on fuel; sixspeed manual transmission or optional six-speed automatic. • The Rio raises the bar for small-car value, features and style. “Direct fuel injection” and “six-speed automatic transmission” are phrases not normally associated with entry-level transportation, but here they both are in a nearly perfectly styled small car. The pleasing sheetmetal is highlighted by the fact that the Rio sedan and Rio 5-Door hatchback have completely different front ends. Kia didn’t just put a hatchback on the tail of the Rio and call it a day. That kind of attention to detail extends to the dashboard layout that’s clearly presented and, due to a reduction of hard plastic surfaces, is far richer looking than in past Rios. The air conditioning, rear-window heat and ventilation toggle switches are a particularly nice touch. The standard 1.6-litre four-cylinder produces 138 horsepower and 123 pound-feet of torque, which is decent in a 1,150-kilogram vehicle. All Rio models come with a six-speed manual transmission, or optional six-speed automatic. To help save fuel dollars, automatic-equipped cars can be ordered with what Kia calls Idle Stop and Go (ISG). This feature shuts off the engine after the Rio comes to a complete stop, then instantly fires it up again once the brake pedal is released. ISG is part of an Eco Dynamics Package that includes a special alternator that disengages under high engine load (such as when heading up hill) for reduced power loss and improved fuel performance. Kia claims overall fuel consumption is reduced by about three per cent with ISG. That’s not much, but every little bit helps. The base Rio LX with the manual gearbox is somewhat light in the content department, while the mid-range LX+ includes air conditioning, plus a few more goodies. The EX adds 16-inch alloy wheels, power sunroof and a rearview camera, while the top-end SX UVO adds a “Steptronic” automatic transmission, 17-inch wheels (15-inchers are standard), leather interior, rain-sensing wipers and more. To add navigation, you need the SX. Base price (incl. destination): $15,350 (sedan), $15,750 (hatchback) Type: Four-door sedan/hatchback Engine (hp): 1.6-litre DOHC I4 (138) Layout: Front-engine, front-wheel-drive Transmission: Six-speed manual; six-speed automatic (opt.) l/100 km (city/highway): 6.6/4.9 (MT) Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control Weight (kg): 2,430

Steps to Avoid Engine
Overheating
It is a common sight many an automobile owner is all to familiar with: A car is stranded on the side of the road with the hood open and smoke billowing out as an exasperated driver looks on shaking his or her head. An overheated engine can render a car useless in a matter of minutes. A vehicle is propelled by an engine that ignites gasoline and causes controlled explosions within. An engine can produce quite a lot of heat. Compound this with external temperatures and an overheated engine may occur. Other mechanical factors can also cause an engine to overheat. These include a faulty thermostat to regulate coolant supply to the engine and even an inoperable radiator fan. Experts say an average car engine is designed to operate within 195 to 220 F. Anything above that could cause engine failure. Overheating can cause a lot of damage to a car. It may damage and burn holes in the parts. Rings, pistons or rod bearings may become impaired, or one can blow a head gasket. Coolant is designed to protect an engine to a point, but it can also become compromised under high heat. Boiling coolant may cause the radiator and hoses to burst. The best way to avoid engine and vehicle trouble due to overheating is to prevent an engine from becoming overheated in the first place. Here are strategies to employ. 1. Ensure that coolant levels are maintained and there are no leaks that would cause coolant to drip out. Be sure the right coolant is being used for the particular vehicle.
2. Dirty, inadequate motor oil cannot dissipate heat as well as clean oil. Check the oil level and viscosity. Change the oil before a long trip or if it looks past its prime. 3. Confirm radiator hoses are in good working order and do not look worn out. 4. Have a mechanic check that a radiator fan is working and that there is adequate air flow through the radiator. 5. Be aware of engine temperature by watching the gauge on the dashboard. If an engine seems like it’s about to overheat, here are some steps to take. * Slow down, and pull into the right lane. Turn on the heat in the car and open the windows. This may draw heat out of the engine block, while maintaining a slow pace can continue to draw air over the engine. * Pull over and open the hood to allow the engine to cool. * Top off the radiator with coolant. Water can also work in a pinch. * Take frequent breaks during long road trips to allow the engine to cool down for at least 15 minutes. * Be sure to clear the radiator from obstructions, including leaves or insects that may have collected. Men and women without auto maintenance experience should not touch anything under the hood. Consult with a mechanic to determine engine overheating causes.

Overall: The fifth-generation Altima is as easy on the eyes as it is on fuel; coupe (four-cylinder only) returns unchanged, but its days might be numbered.
Overall: Nissan beats a lighter, roomier and sleeker “Path” to your (garage) door; now shifts into the tall wagon class from its previous sport utility perch; fuel economy rises dramatically.
Drivetrain: Moderately updated four-cylinder and V6 engines for the sedan. Four-cylinder gets a new continuously variable transmission and improved fuel performance.
Drivetrain: Both front- and four-wheel-drive versions use a single 260-horsepower V6; gets the job done with the assistance of a continuously variable transmission.
• The mid-size Altima sedan for 2013 presents a more graceful shape that’s sure to find favour with current and potential owners. Most of the basic length/width/height dimensions vary only slightly, including a bit wider front and rear track (the distance between the left and right wheels). The well-appointed interior features NASA-inspired “zero-gravity” front-seats for greater comfort. Cabin noise has been reduced with more sound-absorbing materials around the instrument panel, floor and roof areas and upgrading the engine mounts. The base 2.5-litre four-cylinder now delivers 182 horsepower, up from the previous 175 mark, due to a new valvetrain plus peak torque adjustments. In addition, an all-new continuously variable transmission (CVT) offers fewer moving parts, significantly reduced friction and electronic control improvements so that it more closely mimics a traditional multi-speed automatic. Nissan now claims fuel performance of 7.4 l/100 km city and 5.0 highway, compared with 8.8/6.2 for the previous Altima. The Altima’s optional 270-horsepower 3.5-litre V6 remains unchanged, but it also benefits from the same CVT upgrade and is now rated at 9.3 l/100 km city/6.4 highway. Altima now boasts Active Understeer Control that applies light braking pressure to the inside wheel in a corner to counteract the car’s natural tendency to continue in a straight line. Also assisting the driver is Nissan’s Easy Fill Tire Alert that was initially installed in the Quest minivan. Instead of trying to decipher your tire pressure gauge (especially daunting at night), the horn will sound when the correct amount of inflation has been reached. Finally, the Altima’s headlights automatically turn on after the wipers have completed four cycles, which helps other drivers see you during downpour conditions. The base 2.5 includes all the standard bells and whistles plus a six-way power driver’s seat and keyless start. S and SV models progressively add dual-zone climate control, heated front seats and Bluetooth hands-free connectivity with hands-free messaging. Move up to the SL and a leather interior, heated steering wheel and a power moonroof are yours. The coupe remains available, but only with a 2.5-litre four-cylinder. Base price (incl. destination): $25,000 Type: Four-door sedan; two-door coupe Base Engine (hp): 2.5-litre DOHC I4 (182) Optional engine (hp): 3.5-litre DOHC V6 (270) Layout: Front-engine, front-wheel-drive Transmissions: Six-speed manual; continuously variable (opt.) l/100 km (city/highway): 7.4/5.0 (2.5, CVT) Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; stability control; traction control Weight (kg): 1,410
• The Tennessee-built Pathfinder had remained virtually untouched since the 2005 model year. A robust bodyon-frame chassis made it ideal for boulder-bashing, creek-fording activities. The 2013 edition has undergone a serious weight-loss regimen; shedding about 110 kilograms (145 kilograms on 4x4 units). Its diet included converting to a unitized (frameless) platform shared with Nissan’s Infiniti JX luxury wagon and eliminating the 305-horsepower-V8 option. The base 266-horsepower 4.0-litre V6 has also been dropped. In their place resides Nissan’s one-engine-fits-all 3.5-litre V6 that generates 260 horsepower and 240 pound-feet of torque. The 3.5 is teamed with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) that replaces the previous five-speed automatic. Front-wheel-drive versions are rated at 10.5 l/100 km city and 7.7 highway, while four-wheel-drive Pathfinders achieve 10.8/7.9. Nissan’s All-Mode 4x4-i option allows you to select either two- or four-wheel-drive, or engage the Auto setting and let the All-Mode make the call, based on which tire(s) has traction. There is a penalty to be paid for the new Pathfinder’s weight and power decrease in that the maximum towing capacity has been curtailed to 2,300 kilograms from 3,100. The new sheetmetal manages a passing resemblance to the outgoing rig as far as the grille is concerned. But from there, the boxy body of old has given way to gentle, sweeping curves and rounded edges. The new “Path” gains about 13 centimetres in length, 11 centimetres in width and five centimetres between the front and rear wheels. Nissan created a third row reclining seat and a second row with 13 centimetres of fore and aft travel, while a portion of the split-second bench slides forward for easier third-row access, even if there’s a child seat attached. The base Pathfinder S arrives with tri-zone climate control and 14 cup/bottle holders. The SV adds roof rails and a rearview monitor while leather-covered seats, remote engine start and a power liftgate are SL highlights. From there the sky’s the limit where the SL Premium, Platinum and Platinum Premium trim levels are concerned. An up-level sound system, Around View camera, panorama moonroof and a navigation system are on the menu, depending on the depth of your pockets. Base price (incl. destination): $30,200 Type: Four-door tall wagon Engine (hp): 3.5-litre DOHC V6 (260) Layout: Front-engine, two- /four-wheel-drive Transmission: Continuously variable l/100 km (city/highway): 10.5/7.7 (FWD) Safety: Front airbags, side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; stability control; traction control Weight (lb.): 1,900 (est.)

NISSAN SENTRA
NISSAN TITAN
Overall: Nissan’s brand new Altima-copying compact is slightly bigger, easier on the eyes and more fuel-efficient to boot.
Overall: You’ll have to settle for a bit more content, revised packages and minor visual changes until a new Titan arrives.
Drivetrain: One-size-fits-all 130-horsepower four-cylinder engine mates with a six-speed manual transmission, or optional continuously variable unit; no sign of a Spec V performance model.
Drivetrain: There’s nothing quite like the exhaust rumble of the Titan’s 317-horsepower 5.6-litre V8, but giving away 60 horsepower to the competition — and having a 16.1/10.9 (city/highway) l/100 km rating for 4x2 models?
• Nissan has apparently taken a page from other automakers such as Hyundai and has produced a totally new Sentra that, at first blush, might seem a bit confusing. That’s because the design of the compact fourdoor so closely mimics the mid-size Altima that, from not too far away, you could easily confuse the two. Both cars share similarly styled grilles and muscular-looking fenders and the sweep of the roofline that ends at a short rear deck also appears familiar. Compared with the outgoing Sentra, the new car is slightly wider, lower and longer and has about the same interior volume, but the optical illusion is that it appears larger than it actually is. Ultimately, there’s nothing about the Sentra to remind you of the old one (cue Martha Stewart’s signature line). Under the hood is a similar story. The new 130-horsepower four-cylinder engine replaces the 2.0-litre 140-horse four-cylinder. But with about 70 kilograms less weight to haul around due to a lightened body structure, you’ll likely never notice the loss in peak power. What you will notice is more cash in your jeans from fewer trips to the gas bar. Sentras are rated at 6.6 l/100 km city and 4.9 highway. That’s about a 13 per cent improvement compared to the previous rating. Note that to achieve those values you’ll need to step up to the optional continuously variable transmission, as most buyers will do anyway, since the six-speed manual gearbox is standard only on the $16,200 base S model that isn’t all that base. Standard features include air conditioning tilt and telescopic steering column, power windows and door locks and remote keyless entry. Content levels increase as you head up the remaining four trims, topping out at the $24,500 SL that comes with dual-zone climate control, premium sound system, 17-inch wheels (16-inch rims are standard), push-button ignition and a fancier interior. However you’ll need to head beyond that point to add leather-covered seats, a touch-screen navigation system, rearview monitor and other niceties that can take the Sentra as far away from a bare-bones econo-box as you can imagine. There’s no hint that a sporty SE-R model (or Spec V for that matter) with a larger engine and added performance is about to reappear anytime soon. Base price (incl. destination): $16,200 Type: Four-door sedan Engine (hp): 1.8-litre DOHC I4 (130) Transmissions: Six-speed manual; CVT(opt.) Layout: Front-engine, front-wheel-drive l/100 km (city/highway): 6.6/4.9 (CVT) Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control Weight (kg): 1,270
• With nearly a decade virtually unchanged, the full-size Titan can be a hard sell, especially against the competition in the ultra-competitive pickup market. However, Titan makes an appeal to hard-working individuals with two frame lengths and two choices in bed length, ending at 8’2”. The bigger box is only offered on extended-cab models and not the four-door Titans. From the outside, the Titan mimics the dimensions and attitude of its domestic rivals and attempts to match them under the hood with an all-aluminum 317-horsepower 5.6-litre V8. That might be well shy of what Dodge, GM and Toyota deliver, but perhaps more important than peak horsepower numbers is the torque, as in close to 400 pound-feet of it, most of which is available from just 2,500 rpm. That helps the Titan tow up to 4,320 kilograms. Two cab styles are offered: extended King Cab (with a pair of reverse opening rear access doors that swing 180 degrees); and a four-door Crew Cab. Both two- or four-wheel-drive versions are available. There’s enough interior room to hold five tall adults with front and rear legroom that’s practically identical. Interior amenities include a choice of bench or bucket seats as well as adjustable foot pedals. Four-wheel disc brakes with anti-lock are standard as well as side-impact and side-curtain airbags and rear-proximity sensors that alert you when your backup path is blocked. Back for more is the revised off-road-inspired PRO-4X model that comes with a lower final drive ratio, unique wheels wrapped in off-road rubber, additional skid plates to protect the Titan’s underbelly and electronic-locking rear differential, along with unique appearance upgrades inside and out. For 2013, a new audio system with a larger display and USB capability becomes standard on most models. Base price (incl. destination): $35,500 (2012) Type: Two- or four-door pickup Base Engine (hp): 5.6-litre DOHC V8 (317) Layout: Front-engine, rear- /four-wheel-drive Transmission: Five-speed automatic l/100 km (city/highway): 16.1/10.9 (4x2) Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control. Car Washing Dos and Don’ts
Car enthusiasts will tell you that one of the best ways to maintain that new car look is to keep up with a frequent washing schedule. Removing road grime and other plagues of automotive paint on a routine basis keeps a car looking its best. There are some rules of the road when maintaining the exterior of a vehicle
to ensure the finish remains in pristine condition. Keep in mind these dos and don’ts. DO use products specifically designed for automobiles. Household cleansers may be good at removing dirt, but they may also strip off the protective wax on the car.
DON’T wash the car while it is hot, after it’s been sitting out in the sun a while or directly after it’s been driven. The warmth can cause the water and soap to dry faster, leaving unsightly deposits. DO wash off dead insects, road salt, mud, etc., as soon as possible. Otherwise these substances may stick to the
paint and cause erosion. DON’T assume the rain will clean the car. In areas with acid rain, it’s actually essential to rinse a vehicle off after it rains to prevent damage. DO move the sponge lengthwise along the vehicle. Swirling the sponge may cause tiny scratches.

TOYOTA AVALON Overall: Now that’s better! The new Avalon displays a sharp new look that makes it appear more Lexus- and less Toyota-like, which we like . . . a lot. Drivetrain: Back is a 268-horsepower V6/six-speed-automatic-transmission combo; Camry-based gas-electric Hybrid becomes optional for the first time. • The Avalon enjoys a sterling reputation as a quiet, comfortable cruiser, but mostly with more mature drivers. That appears likely to change with the arrival of the new 2013 edition. The styling alone actually looks more youthful than the Camry from which it was spawned. Its crisp lines reflect the car’s slightly more diminutive dimensions — six centimetres shorter, a bit narrower and not quite as tall — than the outgoing model. The new Avalon also weighs about 55 kilograms less as a result. Unchanged is the 268-horsepower 3.5-litre V6, although Toyota has tweaked the engine and installed an updated six-speed transaxle for improved fuel economy (11.2 city/7.6 highway versus 12.0/7.8). For 2013 the Avalon joins the Camry in offering a gas-electric Hybrid model that uses a 156-horsepower 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine working in tandem with an electric motor to produce 200 net horsepower. As before, the transmission connects the V6 to the front wheels, while the continuously variable transmission is standard for the Hybrid. Toyota claims the fuel-miserly sedan will achieve the same 5.9 l/100 km city and 6.0 highway numbers as the Camry, which makes sense as the systems are identical and both sedans are very close in weight. The improved interior features front seats that are more supportive with better side bolstering while the concave-shaped dashboard results in more cabin room. By its very nature the base Avalon shows up with an abundance of standard equipment, although for the full-on luxury experience you’ll need to spring for a premium leather interior, heated and ventilated front and rear seats, larger wheels, navigation/communications systems and an up-level stereo, to list just a few options. Base price: starting at $36,800 (est.) Type: Four-door sedan Base Engine (hp): 3.5-litre DOHC V6 (268) Optional engine (hp): 2.5-litre DOHC I4 with electric assist (200, hybrid) Layout: Front-engine, front-wheel-drive Transmission: Six-speed automatic; CVT (Hybrid) l/100 km (city/highway): 11.2/7.6 (V6) Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; driver’s knee airbag; anti-lock brakes; stability control; traction control Weight (kg): 1,620
TOYOTA TACOMA
www.vernonmorningstar.com
TOYOTA COROLLA CE Overall: Toyota’s conservatively styled compact is in the home stretch of a five-year run. Drivetrain: Corolla loses its 2.5-litre four-cylinder, leaving the 1.8-litre four-cylinder; five-speed manual and four-speed automatic transmissions are on the menu. • As the current record holder as the world’s best-selling automotive brand, the Corolla clearly has plenty of admirers and plenty of experience offering a solid product with a reputation for bulletproof reliability. Now, after five years, it will soon be time to say good bye to the current edition of the Corolla and prepare to welcome a new 2014 model. All three trim levels — CE, LE and S — come with a 132-horsepower 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine. A five-speed manual transmission is standard, while a four-speed automatic is optional. The 169-horsepower 2.5-litre-four-cylinder option has made an early departure and is no longer available. Base Corollas feature air conditioning, 15-inch steel wheels, tilt/telescoping steering wheel, split-folding rear seat and a four-speaker audio system. Power door locks, remote keyless entry and an auto-down feature for the driver’s side power window form additional LE content. That designation retains its up-level six-speaker stereo with its USB port and Bluetooth wireless connectivity, which is good for hands-free phone operation. The sportier looking S adds 16-inch alloy wheels, exterior body cladding, rear spoiler, fog lamps and firmer front seats. The options list includes a power moonroof, navigation system, eight-speaker sound system and satellite radio with some of these items arriving on the higher trim levels. Base price: starting at $15,450 Type: Four-door sedan Engine (hp): 1.8-litre DOHC I4 (132) Layout: Front-engine, front-wheel-drive Transmissions: Five-speed manual; four-speed automatic (opt.) l/100 km (city/highway): 7.4/5.6 (1.8) Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; stability control; traction control Weight (kg): 1,240
TOYOTA VENZA
Overall: Few competitors are left in the sub-full-size class; Tacoma gets more luxurious with new Limited Package.
Overall: The Venza straddles the line between a regular wagon and quasi-sport ute; a new grille and taillights plus new wheel designs add some fresh appeal.
Drivetrain: Holdover 2.7-litre four-cylinder and truck-specific 4.0-litre V6.
Drivetrain: Venza’s starting point is a 2.7-litre four-cylinder; a 268-horse V6 is optional; all-wheel-drive can be ordered with either powerplant.
• Talk about lonely. The Tacoma is very nearly the last pickup that doesn’t tower over every other vehicle on the road. Despite its relative age, Toyota unleashed a trickle of updates for 2012, including a very subtle reshaped grille and headlights, and new exterior mirrors. Under the long hood rests either a base 159-horsepower four-cylinder that could use an upgrade, or if towing/hauling is more of a concern, the Tacoma turns up the wick to the tune of 236 horsepower via the optional 4.0-litre V6. Outfitted with six standard airbags and traction and stability control to help keep the driver on track when the road surface becomes disagreeable, the Tacoma comes in the usual regular, extended Access-Cab and four-door Double-Cab models and your choice of rear-or four-wheel-drive for all. The box (available in two lengths) floor and walls in all cases is made of composite plastic that obviously won’t dent or rust. Up-level models also get hose-out heavy-duty all-weather flooring. The radio also gets upgraded with a larger eight-centimetre screen that doubles as the backup camera, and every Tacoma comes with Toyota’s new Entune mobile application and Bluetooth system. Adding a little class to the mix is a new Limited Package, which includes plenty of chrome inside and out, plus heated front sport seats, leather-trimmed steering wheel and more. Carry-over models include the TX and TX Pro packages, which include black bead-lock wheels, blacked-out tube sidesteps, and a custom exhaust. Then there’s the ground-hugging X-Runner that specializes in picking off sports cars at local mall-parking-lot autocross events. Packing a six-speed-manual transmission, tasty ground effects and a lowered stance, the X-Runner is a formidable driving tool that can haul more than lumber and tools to the job site. Base price: starting at $22,335 (4X2) Type: Two-/four-door mid-sized pickup Base Engine (hp): 2.7-litre DOHC I4 (159) Optional engine (hp): 4.0-litre DOHC V6 (236) Layout: Front-engine, rear-/four-wheel drive Transmission: Five-speed manual; four-speed automatic (opt. on I4); six-speed manual (std. on V6); five-speed automatic (opt. on V6) l/100 km (city/highway): 10,0/7.7 (2.7, MT, 4x2) Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control Weight (kg): 1,610
• Toyota could have simply called the Venza the “Camry Wagon”, but although the two cars share the same platform, there are enough physical differences for the automaker to create separate identities. The Venza’s interior is also similar to that of the Camry, although there are added storage spots throughout the cabin and the shifter has been relocated to the upper portion of the centre console. You might as well just call it the Camry Wagon, but that’s not exactly what appeals to customers. Of course, the split-folding rear seats fold flat, but they also recline up to 14 degrees for extra comfort and can be manually folded from the back using levers located on either side of the cargo bay. The Venza is fitted with a 182-horsepower 2.7-litre four-cylinder engine or an optional 268-horsepower 3.5-litre V6 matched to a six-speed automatic transmission (also Camry sourced). Venza puts the power to the front wheels, although all-wheel-drive is available at extra cost. The Venza line consists of base and V6 models, with Premium and Touring Packages to add toys galore. Standard equipment is still generous, including dual-zone air conditioning, cruise control, remote keyless entry, auto-dimming rearview mirror, tilt/telescoping steering wheel with audio controls and a six-disc CD changer for the audio package. Nineteen-inch wheels are also standard, while 20-inchers accompany V6 models. Heading the options list is an upgraded interior with leather seats and wood-style trim, satellite navigation, rear-seat entertainment and premium audio systems plus automatic headlights that use sensors to switch to low beams from high when vehicles approach in the oncoming lane. Base price: starting at $28,690 Type: Four-door tall wagon Base Engine (hp): 2.7-litre DOHC I4 (182) Optional engines (hp): 3.5-litre DOHC V6 (268) Layout: Front-engine, front- /all-wheel-drive Transmissions: Six-speed automatic l/100 km (city/highway): 10.0/6.8 (2.7, FWD) Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; driver’s-side knee airbag; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control Weight (kg): 1,710

How to
avoid
becoming a vehicle
theft
statistic Automobile theft is no laughing matter. It leaves people without a means of transportation, costs the public more money in insurance payments and taxes and can give anyone the feeling of being personally violated. The FBI estimates that around one million motor vehicles are stolen in the United States each year. The Insurance Bureau of Canada says that a car is stolen every three and a half minutes in Canada, an estimate that translates to approximately 420 cars per day. Auto theft costs everyone millions of dollars -- and can even cost some their lives. According to the Insurance Information Institute, the chances of a car being stolen are now significantly less than they were in 1989. That could be due to vehicle theft prevention systems that now come standard on many new cars. While not all vehicle thefts and break-ins can be prevented, there are many devices individuals can employ to help reduce the risk of vehicle theft. * Immobilizing devices: There are several types of immobilizing devices available to protect a car from theft. An immobilizing system works by preventing thieves from bypassing your ignition switch and hot-wiring your car. An immobilization device can involve a kill switch that needs to be turned on before the car will start and can be cleverly hidden. Most cars also come with specially encoded smart keys that are required to start the car. The key is unique to the make, model and VIN number of the car. * Car alarms: Car alarms work as a deterrent to theft, but they do not always prevent theft. The alarm sounds when the vehicle is tampered with or the door is opened, but many people have become desensitized to car alarms because of the frequency of “false alarms” from car owners setting the alarms off themselves. Therefore, they may no longer be as effective as they once were. In addition, many thieves can disarm an alarm in a matter of seconds. * Hood and tire locks: Locks that are installed on different parts of the car or truck can also deter thieves. A hood lock stops a potential thief from getting under the hood and gaining access to the engine and wiring. Tire locks are special devices that require a unique tool to remove the tire. This can help prevent tire theft and may give thieves pause as to what other anti-theft devices are on the car. * Tracking devices: There are devices, like Lojack, that are designed to pinpoint the position of a car. It uses FM radio frequencies to help police recover the car. Some people also purchase after-market GPS devices that will show their vehicle’s location on a computer or smartphone. * OnStar: This system was originally de-
signed to be a crash-notification system, but it now offers other helpful services. Individuals can use OnStar for directions, to unlock their vehicles and now to slow down their cars and trucks if they have been stolen. OnStar comes pre-installed on many General Motors cars. There are other steps to take to prevent vehicle thefts and break-ins. * Whenever possible, park in well-illuminated areas. * Never leave your car unlocked. * Keep valuables, including money, out of site in your car. * Be mindful of where you keep your car keys. * When parking in unfamiliar neighborhoods, park in public pay-lots that have security present. * Give valet parkers your valet key, so they won’t have access to a trunk or glove compartment. * Know your car alarm sound and be aware of it.
