The Abbotsford Heat will cost taxpayers $1.76 million for the 2011/12 season. The city will pay the American Hockey League club that amount to cover its financial shortfall in the third year of a 10year supply fee agreement, which guarantees the Heat annual break-even revenue of $5.7 million to play out of the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre (AESC).

Over the last three seasons, the city has paid the Heat a total of $3.58 million. The deficit was $450,000 in 2009/10, and $1.37 million in 2010/11. “We’re certainly concerned that we are not making the progress that we had hoped to make,” said city manager Frank Pizzuto. “Year one was a $450,000 loss, and we felt that, well, that was year one. Year two got worse and we heard that year three

would rebound and it hasn’t,” he said. “Obviously, the city can’t continue to absorb these losses.” The Heat’s 2011/12 revenues were $3.9 million, as average attendance declined for a third consecutive year – from 3,897 per game to 3,807, and 3,545 last season. The team is owned by the Calgary Flames, and operated locally by Fraser Valley Sports and Entertainment (FVSE),

With that investment yielding few dividends, the Heat have trimmed their budget back to the core $5.7 million for 2012/13. “Last year we said, ‘Let’s make sure it’s not marketing that’s causing us not to fill the seats,’” Sweeting said. “And we found out it didn’t matter.” Asked to pinpoint reasons for the lack of growth, Sweeting mentioned a series of persistent issues. The Heat’s home schedule consists of back-to-back games, and few fans can attend both on a weekend. Then there’s the team’s less-thanpopular affiliation with the Flames, a division rival of the Vancouver Canucks, and lingering public dissatisfaction with the decision to build the AESC and the supply fee deal with the Heat. The team has also moved more group tickets at this point than they did in the entire 2009-10 season. “At the end of the day, the (2011/12 deficit) number is reality. But I still believe with all my heart that it can work in Abbotsford. We’re trending in a good way this year,” Walter said. The team, in an effort to get more families into the rink, has cut its lowest ticket price from $20 to $15. “It’s going to work, because we believe it’s a good product at a good price in a good venue...” Sweeting maintained. “We’re seeing a growth this year – we’re ahead of where we were last year, which we’re excited about. “If we can show growth, it calms everybody down. The day the city stops cutting cheques, every issue goes away.”

Due to extremely dry conditions, we had to pass on a camp fire. If you love the outdoors, you know that an evening fire is integral to the experience. There is just nothing like the penetrating warmth, and the swirling colours of a wood blaze. Sometimes, the simplest things are best.

letters Concrete barrier could have prevented fatal head-on I am writing in regard to the Oct. 15 fatal head-on crash on the Highway 11 bypass. The only place on Abbotsford-Mission Highway that a person can now be killed or crippled in a head-on collision is up and down the bypass in Abbotsford. Until 2005, the only other place was on the Mission Bridge, then it was made safer. The basic problem and the solution

are the same – place a concrete median barrier between the yellow lines. The barrier should have been installed as late as 2003. The reason the Chilliwack woman was killed because the out-of-control van did not bounce off a median barrier and redirect back into its own lane. Instead it crossed the median. If there was a barrier on that route, the woman would still be with us. This fatality was totally preventable.

Pumpkins Accepted in Yard Waste

Don’t have space in your backyard composter for your JackO-Lantern? You can still keep pumpkins out of the landfill by placing them in your yard waste container along with leaves, grass and fallen fruit. When setting your pumpkin in your yard waste container, remember the following: • remove all candles; • remove any non-organic decorations, such as any plastics or metal; and • place in your re-usable yard waste container, not into a Kraft paper bag. Pumpkins can also be taken to the Net Zero Waste Abbotsford Composting Facility where they will be accepted at no charge. The facility is located at 5050 Gladwin Road.

Business Licence Bylaw, 2006 Amendment No. 8 Bylaw 2158-2012

Relocation of Residential Yard Waste Drop Off Facility to 5050 Gladwin Road Please note that the Residential Yard Waste Drop Off Facility, formerly located at 33670 Valley Road, is now closed. Residential yard waste can now be dropped off at the Net Zero Waste Abbotsford Composting Facility, located at 5050 Gladwin Road. Similar to the Valley Road facility, the new facility will receive dropped off residential yard waste for a fee. The Net Zero Waste Abbotsford Composting Facility is a privately-owned facility and until December 31, 2012, will only be accepting residential yard waste. Starting on January 1, 2013, the City of Abbotsford will be starting curbside collection of combined food and yard waste which will be processed at the Net Zero Waste Composting Facility. The new facility is open seven days per week, from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, except statutory holidays. Please note that construction is in progress at the site until the end of December, so please pay attention to signs and staff at the site. FAQs about the new Compost Collection Program Why is the City introducing this program?

The City needs to reduce the amount of garbage we take to the landfill. Tipping and disposal rates for garbage increase every year. Reducing the amount of garbage we dump reduces our operating costs and is better for the environment, too. Many other lower mainland communities already have similar programs in place.

When does the curbside compostable collection program start?

The program starts January 1, 2013. Your first collection day will be determined by the collection schedule that will be delivered in December 2012.

What is accepted in the curbside compostable can? • Yard waste, including grass & branches • All food scraps, including meat, bones, fruit & vegetables • Food contaminated paper towel, tissues & pizza boxes absolutely no glass, plastics, metals or diapers are accepted.

Where do i get a compostable waste container?

Containers can be purchased at most hardware stores. Any waste container under 80 L in size with a functional lid and two handles is acceptable for curbside collection. Place a yard waste or compostable waste sticker on the container. Food waste can be placed in the container you currently put your yard waste in. The yard waste sticker is also acceptable for compostable collection.

How many containers may i place out for collection? You can place an unlimited number of compostable waste containers out for collection, within reason.

How often will my compost container be collected?

Your compostable waste container will be emptied once a week on your regularly scheduled collection day, along with recyclables.

If you have more than three containers, you will need to purchase an extra garbage sticker from City Hall, Matsqui or Abbotsford Recreation Centres.

Where does my food and yard waste go after pickup?

Your food and yard waste will be taken to the new hi-tech compost facility located at 5050 Gladwin Road, where it will be made into high quality growing soils. This site is also the new residential yard waste drop-off location. Call 604-557-7065 for more information.

Where can i get more information about the program?

By early December, a kitchen compost pail, a new collection handbook and additional information will be delivered to your home. Information is also available on the website at www.abbotsford.ca /curbsidecompost or through the Engineering Department at 604-864-5514.

When will my garbage be collected? Garbage pickup will change to once every two weeks. Up to three garbage containers will be collected on your collection day.

Abbotsford is taking another look at its tree protection bylaw. Residents of Sumas Mountain who attended a town hall meeting last week were told that the bylaw is under review and could soon be changed to exclude the rural areas. Currently, the bylaw requires residents to acquire a tree-cutting permit. Trees located on Agricultural Reserve Land (ALR) are exempt. “This was an urban tree bylaw that does not work well in the rural areas,” said Abbotsford Mayor Bruce Banman. He said there are more trees on Sumas Mountain now than 40 years ago, and the bylaw is “getting in the way of people trying to maintain their properties.” Staff have made a recommendation that the bylaw could be changed to exclude rural areas, such as Sumas Mountain. This issue has yet to go before council, which would need to approve any bylaw changes. The city has been hosting periodic public meetings with mountain residents since 2008 when Area H amalgamated with the city. The purpose is to allow residents to voice concerns regarding everything from taxation to gravel trucks to the city’s environmental plan for the area, which may be on hold. “Development is not going to happen on Sumas Mountain for many, many years,’ said Banman. With that in mind, city staff has recommended that the city puts a halt to the environmental plan for now. That issue will also be sent back to council.

Red Nose volunteers encouraged

While new regulations for volunteer background checks have added some red tape to the process, Operation Red Nose and the Abbotsford Police are letting potential volunteers know they shouldn’t be discouraged. Local non-profit sport organization, PacificSport Fraser Valley is preparing to host the seasonal safe-ride-home program for the 17th consecutive year in Abbotsford and Mission. Abbotsford Police Const. Ian MacDonald said the new process adds some additional pages to be filled out for those volunteers who may be in contact with children, the elderly, disabled persons or other potentially vulnerable contacts. This includes ORN drivers. The $27 cost of the background checks for ORN’s volunteers is still covered by the APD, which values the work of ORN. “The Abbotsford Police Department is a

huge supporter of Operation Red Nose,” said Const. Ian MacDonald. “We appreciate the amazing commitment made by the numerous volunteers who work to keep our community safe during the holiday season. Giving people an opportunity to celebrate with friends and family and to have their vehicle driven home by a sober driver is not just a great option; it is a priceless contribution to the safety of our roadways.” The Operation Red Nose service is offered on nine evenings this season: Nov. 30 and Dec. 1, 7, 8, 14, 15, 21, 22 & 31. That amounts to an estimated 600 volunteer shifts that need to be filled. What began as a discussion about how to encourage a fellow student, has exploded into a labour of love. Students and staff at Abbotsford Christian Secondary have created a seven-minute music video to help cheer up Alexis Summers, a fellow student currently admitted to BC Children’s Hospital with a serious illness. ACS principal Gerry Goertzen approached the school’s Student Action Leadership Team (SALT) with the idea of finding a way to encourage their classmate. Four years ago, James Lepp took stock of his waning passion for golf and surprised observers of the sport by transitioning into the business world. These days, his rekindled love for the game is being broadcast

After turning pro in 2006, Lepp had some solid results on the Canadian Tour, but when consistency proved elusive, he shifted his focus to launching Kikkor Golf, a shoe and apparel company. “I think deep down, I love golf a lot,” Lepp

said, reflecting on the decision to rev up his playing career again. “I love it so much that when I wasn’t getting better at it, it made me not want to play. “It’s like a relationship gone bad. You keep putting time into it and you don’t get anything back, and eventually you’re like, ‘This is just frustrating,’ and you walk away.” Beyond Big Break Greenbrier, Lepp’s participation in the first stage of PGA Q-School last week signals his renewed spark for the game. He fell short of advancing. “I’ve got lots of time now to figure out what I want to do, golf-wise,” he noted. The Cascades women were No. 3 in the first coaches' poll of the season released Tuesday, behind the two-time defending national champ Windsor Lancers and Canada West rival Regina Cougars. The UFV men's squad, coming off a fourth-place finish at nationals last season, open at No. 4. The teams ahead of them are defending CIS champ Carleton, the UBC Thunderbirds and the Acadia Axemen. CROMBIE Edith Oct. 24, 1922 - Oct. 24, 2012

ERSKINE In loving memory of Nicholas Sheldon Erskine who passed away peacefully in Montreal Quebec on Friday October 19 2012. Nicholas is survived by his mother Flo of Mission, brother Terry and his daughters Sunni, Penni, Kristi, Tammy and Jody, as well as his grand children and great grand children. All who have had the pleasure of being a part of Nicholas’ life know he was fun and always ready for a new adventure. His sense of humor and love for his family and friends will be truly missed. A memorial service was held in Montreal on Friday October 26, 2012.

Mrs. Edith Mary Crombie (nee Clark) late of Abbotsford, BC passed away on October 24, 2012 at the age of 90 at Tabor Home. She is survived by her daughter, Trudi Nelson and son-in-law, Bob; her son, Tim Crombie and daughter-in-law Dale; grandchildren, Debbie Easton (Gord), Diane Mortimer (Alan); Renee Crombie (Don), Travis Crombie (Julianne); great-grandchildren, Patrick Easton; Tia & Rachel Mortimer, Mitchel & Dani Hustins. She was predeceased by her husband, Pat and granddaughter, Jill Nelson. We wish to thank the nurses and care aids at the Tabor Home for the wonderful care they gave to mom. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, November 2, 2012 at 1:00 pm at Henderson’s Funeral Home, 34537 Marshall Road, Abbotsford, BC. HANKS Pauline

July 20,1920 - Oct. 24, 2012

Our dear wife, mother and grandmother has left us to go home to her Lord and Saviour. Pauline was born in Victoria, BC and spent most of her life serving others overseas as a missionary nurse with TEAM in North India/Nepal. She arrived in India in 1948 and married Peter Hanks in April 1957. Graham and Neil were born during the next two years. Pauline and Peter continued to work overseas until 1990, and eventually retired in Abbotsford to be close to family living here. Pauline is remembered by her husband, Peter, sons Graham (Sheryl), Neil (Cheryl) and grandchildren Jonathan, Bethany (Robby) Williams, and Kim. Pauline was predeceased by her brother Ken (Connie) Gibbs and sisters Thelma (Ben) Kary, and Joyce Gibbs. A Celebration of Life will be held at Central Heights Church Monday, November 5th at 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to TEAM - Dundeldhura Hospital, Nepal.

BOSCHMAN, Rudy Rudy (RB) Boschman was born October 15, 1923 in Rosenort, Ukraine. When he was three years old, the family immigrated to Canada. He accepted Christ as his Saviour at the age of nine. His young life was spent in schooling, working on the family farm & involvement in the local church. In 1943 Rudy married his first love, Anne Klassen. Together they raised a family of four children. Rudy’s passions were music and evangelism, and he devoted his life to sharing the gospel with everyone he met. In 1986, his beloved wife passed away after a short battle with brain cancer. The following year, Rudy was blessed with a second love, and was married to Anne Janzen. Together they had many opportunities to travel and minister together. Rudy spent the last two years of his life in a care facility; first Bevan Lodge and most recently Menno Home. The family is deeply grateful to the wonderful staff who cared for him. On October 28, 2012 Rudy’s long awaited desire was realized, when he peacefully passed into the presence of his Lord & Saviour. GRANT, Mary Anne (Yaki) Age 78, of Abbotsford and formerly of Aldergrove, passed away October, 21, 2012 due to complications from a brain tumor. Mary Anne was born on the farm near Sandwith, Saskatchewan to John & Selma Yaki. She is predeceased by her parents and sister Dorothy (Ed) Gasper. She is survived by brothers Stan (Mary) Yaki, Gus (Aileen) Yaki, sister-in-law Rae, and sister Margaret (Ralph) Weger. She was a devoted mother to sons Dean (Debi) and Daryl (Marj), a proud grandma to Stefani (Tyler), Carlee, Derek, Chantalle & Sean, and an affectionate greatgrandmother to Lincoln. Mary Anne received her nursing education in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, and served as an R.N. across Saskatchewan and Manitoba, and later in BC at the Oakalla Prison Hospital (Burnaby), and Langley Memorial Hospital. She retired in 1991. She will be remembered for her baking, babysitting, home canning, and holiday meals. She was famous for getting a “good deal” & conscientiously recycling. Although she insisted she “didn’t need anything”, she was a cheerful consumer of Tim Hortons coffee. She was a generous giver of time and resources to family, friends, neighbours and charities. In her retirement, she loved to garden: her dahlias, roses, rhododendrons & geraniums were admired by many. The family would like to thank Liah (Tom) Luu, and the caring staff of the Menno Homes. SCHWARZ SIMPSON Merlin Merlin (Sam) Simpson passed away at Abbotsford Regional Hospital just short of his 75th birthday. He is survived by his wife Isabel; children Brent Simpson of Abbotsford, daughter Linda Simpson of Victoria; his grandchildren Kyle and Natasha Simpson, both of Abbotsford; his sister Sheila Bissell of Calgary; and many nieces and nephews. Merlin or better known as Sam, worked for the District of Matsqui and City of Abbotsford from 1974 retiring in 1998. He spent many years with the maintenance yard and is best known for operating the street sweeper truck in the city. A Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday, November 7, 2012 from 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm at the Rancho Banquet Hall, 31110 Delair Road, Abbotsford, BC. Hedwig (Hedi) W. Hedi passed away peacefully into the arms of her Saviour on October 26, 2012. Left to mourn her sudden passing is her loving husband Harry and their four children, Juergen (Carla), Petra (Ron) Donatelli, Jens (Linda) and Christine MacLeod along with twelve grandchildren, one great grandchild and another one due in January. She has her younger brother Jacob (Ingrid) Knieling in Munich plus nieces, nephews and extended family and friends in both Germany and in the States, and of course a good circle of friends in Abbotsford and surrounding area. Hedi was born in Stanislau, Poland on November 16, 1930, the first child of Jacob and Emma Knieling. The family was relocated to Germany after the war and she met her husband there. Hedi and Harry, her devoted husband of 55 years, were engaged in Germany and came to Canada, where they were married in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1957. The family then moved to Abbotsford in 1970. Many happy memories were made with friends camping, fishing and travelling South. Hedi enjoyed regular trips to Germany as well as vacation cruises with her husband Harry. She was involved as treasurer and other offices in Peace Lutheran Church, the AbbotsfordMission Alpen Club, singing in the church choir and also the Frasertal Choir. Hedi volunteered at church and in the community, such as Welcome Wagon and helping at Harry’s business, Valley Autohouse Ltd. as bookkeeper. But her favourite times were spent with family where she was the heart and soul, cooking for many and still finding the time to sit on the floor and play with her grandchildren. We want to thank the dedicated staff at Menno Home for the loving care they gave to Mom during the five months she was there. A memorial service be held on November 3rd at 10:30 at Peace Lutheran Church 2029 Ware Road in Abbotsford. In lieu of flowers donations would be appreciated to the Peace Lutheran Ladies.
