Shaking a reminder of '46 quake Catherine Temple Special to MidWeek Saturday evening I was working at my computer, when I heard the tinkling of the Feng Shui chimes in my kitchen. It was a strange sound, as I was alone in the house with my two cats, and my dog, so I got up to investigate and the chimes were gently swinging back and forth. A rather pleasant sound I must say, albeit somewhat disturbing as to the reason. I then noticed the Tiffany lamp in the entrance hall swinging back and forth, and the same thing for the lamp in the dining room. It struck me we were having an earthquake. Obviously not a big one, but it did go on for more than just a few seconds. The next morning I read on line that there was a 7.7 in Haida Gwaii. Well now that is something to worry about. Haida Gwaii is only 450 kilometres north of us. We’ve all heard the stories about the big one coming our way, or we have seen on the news the
devastating effect even a 6.5 can perform on the unsuspecting. Disconcerting, considering this is not the only warning we have received in recent years. Was it not at this time last year that we felt the ground moving? There wasn’t too much reported damage done, the schools were evacuated and a friend of mine’s chimney separated from her house, that was just a little expensive to rectify, but it certainly was not life threatening. But it could have been. Take it up a few notches; position the epicenter closer to home on a 7.7, that’s a big one, or mirror the devastating earthquake that rocked Strathcona Park, with devastation raining all the way to Read Island in 1946 at 7.2. Park was shaken and it was not the first time; millions of tons of rock broke away from one of the 7,000 foot peaks of Mount Colonel Foster and avalanched down the side of the mountain, landing in what is now called Landslide Lake. Rock and debris filled the lake and overflowed the banks, creating a fresh water tidal wave that breached the shoreline and thundered down the Elk River Valley, carrying with it thousands of tons of trees, bushes and rock. You can still witness the effects of that quake today. Here we are 60 years later and this episode lays testament to the devastation an
earthquake can cause, it also makes for an interesting hike along the Elk River Trail. On Read Island it was a different story: there was a small but established settlement on Read in 1946, an even bigger settlement than Campbell River at the time. Although it was mostly fields, barns and outbuildings that suffered the damage; families were devastated. Barns were ripped apart, orchards destroyed, with fruit trees collapsing into holes and disappearing. Huge sections of gently sloping, fertile farm land dropped away, leaving deep chasms filled with sticky blue clay; roots were Cont. on Page 4

In neighbouring Campbell River the effects were also felt, with liquefaction of the lowlands and geysers in the estuary, when the shaking was done, there was but one chimney left standing. Is this a harbinger of latent devastation to come? Is there a tremor lurking in our future that may lay havoc on our region? Chances are: Yes there is. The real question is. Are you ready for it? This past March we witnessed the most disastrous wind storm in recent history. Calamitous? Yes. Potentially deadly?
Yes. Pay attention this is important. Imagine yourself standing on the sidewalk (not under the hydro wires and away from the gas lines that you already turned off) on a very dark night such as Saturday night, in the pouring rain, you have escaped harm and your kids are at your side, all your animals are safe but your house is in ruin. Now what? It was a torrential downpour Saturday night, and darn cold at about three degrees, do you have a coat, do the kids have coats, where is your phone, how far spread is the damage? Is the family together? Are you on any medication, is it with you or buried? And what next? Do you even know? Because when it happens it is too late to do the planning. Get ready, and get ready today, it doesn’t take much to put together an emergency
plan, start a box, I use a rubbermaid tote and it is full of everything I may need and probably more, including food and necessities for my animals. GoCampbellRiver. com and follow the program. Know where your closest emergency shelter is, make sure the rest of your family knows where to meet you if they cannot get ahold of you. Take one of the seminars given by the Emergency Services Department, the information you need is all there and it does not need to be expensive, most of what you should have in your kits are things you already have around the house. The only thing you should not do is wait to do it later.

It is a part of the spectrum of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease that ranges from fatty liver to cirrhosis. Ten-20 per cent of North Americans have this type of fatty liver without any inflammation. NASH: non- alcoholic steatohepatitis is a part of this spectrum of NAFLD that also has inflammation of the liver. It is the most common form of progressive liver disease. NAFLD should not be treated as completely benign as it can sometimes lead to NASH which can progress to cirrhosis. In a patient whose liver enzymes keep climbing I would treat aggressively. Greta Webster from Courtenay hooked into nice 19 inch cutty on the Upper Campbell Lake. The fish was caught on a Leo’s Wedding band with a matching Gang troll which is Vancouver Island made lure. event. Roe opened House of Kenpo in 1999 and has been at the original location (1747A Comox Ave. behind Smitty’s Restaurant in Comox) for 13 and a half years. The comfortable dojo features a complete line of martial arts supplies. Roe, who has qualified for the Canadian international martial arts team six times, describes Kenpo karate as a practical application of martial arts — a combination of ancient fighting techniques and
modern scientific principals. Along with karate, House of Kenpo offers classes in SAW and kickboxing for ages eight and up. “Our oldest member is 59 and a thirddegree black belt,� Roe said. What separates House of Kenpo from other martial arts programs? “I’m the only one who gives private lessons in the Valley. Others have tried to do it and they all failed.� Group lessons are also available, and Roe offers a free week-long trial (which includes
one karate lesson, two kickboxing lessons and three grappling lessons) with no obligation to join. That seems almost too good to be true, but Roe says it allows men, women and children to evaluate what and how he teaches. “The best way to learn how I teach is to come here and get on the mat,� Roe said. House of Kenpo offers flexible schedules

Taking it to the next level is what it’s all about at the House of Kenpo Karate School. While sensei Don Roe’s students regularly advance their skills and belt levels, he himself is constantly upgrading his skills to provide top-level instruction to all who walk through the doors of his dojo. Roe is a fourthdegree black belt in Kenpo karate, a brown belt in Submission Arts Wrestling (SAW) and also holds a brown belt in pankration (Greco-Roman style wrestling). As well, Roe is an official member and director of the AllJapan Joint Technique Federation, British Columbia; an official representative of the Canadian Federation of Pankration Athlima; and a director with SAW. Complementing all that knowledge, Roe brings current SAW world heavyweight champion Mike
Martelle to the dojo (“every six months for the last four years,� he notes) to conduct seminars. As well, he and a few select students train regularly with MMA legend and fivetime UFC champion Royce Gracie “for an additional perspective on ground fighting.� That high level of training has helped House of Kenpo students win numerous medals and trophies at high-calibre competitions. Most recently, three of the school’s students made the judges sit up
and take notice at a wrestling tournament in Port Alberni, where Mike Kelly collected a bronze medal. “We went to get some respect and we got lots,� said Roe. Eric Pickford and Gabriel Roe also attended the

Foster parents get a pat on back Black Press PORT HARDY – Local foster parents were honoured in an appreciation event last week as part of B.C.’s Foster Family Month. The foster parents were invited to the Ministry of Children and Family Development offices, where staff took the opportunity to recognize the contributions that they make to the community. Parents were given gifts and certificates of appreciation from the staff, who also laid on tea, coffee and a dessert buffet. “It’s nice to get to sit down with the parents like this,” said one staff member. “It’s not too often we get to sit down and just chat with them.” The event was one

to take in the nearly 90 children in need, and social workers would like to see the number of foster homes grow. Social workers also hope to dispel some of the myths around fostering. Many people assume that they would be unqualified
to be a foster parent because they are not married, or don’t own their home, or because of their income level, but social worker Nicki Therrien explained that these are not key factors. “The kids come from all sorts of
backgrounds so we need foster parents from all sorts of homes,” Therrien said. “A foster parent needs to be committed, look after the child like their own family and take them in and make them feel like they are one of the family.”
As long as the prospective parents (or parent) are over nineteen years old and can provide three references they are eligible to apply, regardless of marital status and homeowner status. A process of home study and

In Port Hardy, each office within the Ministry displayed a thank you from the requisite staff member detailing why they appreciated foster parents. Sentiments ran from highlighting the positive impact on the children to praising the parents’ commitment and hard work.
