It is probably only a matter of time before Canadian Pickers finds her. And when they do, Cindy Brodhagen will have to decide if she wants to part with the weatherbeaten old signs on the side of her building that have been there for years – part of Prince George history. Given her passion for meeting people and searching out antiques, her new business venture off the Hart Highway was a natural “pick” for an adventure-minded Brodhagen who relocated from Inuvik, Northwest Territories – her home for 25 years – last year. One month ago, she opened Treasure Chest Country Store, which is filled to the brim with beautiful antique furniture, linens, hats, old glass and china, vintage shoes, jewellery, consignment pieces, duct tape accessories, beaded scarves, handcrafted purses – made from bottle caps – unique Christmas ornaments, and giftware items made by local craftspeople. All kinds of treasures. “I love people and collecting antiques, so this is perfect for me,” says Brodhagen, who runs the store along with her daughter Kelly Beveridge. She also owns and operates Hartway RV Park and Bed and Breakfast. Many locals have dropped by the store to bring in consignment items and see what’s new. The atmosphere is warm and inviting. People stop in for coffee – made locally by Central Perc – and there are fresh daily sandwiches, ice cream and pop drinks – served in real glass bottles. of the century bedroom, there’s a side table with a swing-out thread holder, a lady’s dressing table and mirror, a full-sized bed with an antique beaded collar draped over the bedspread, a settee and an aviator cap – just like the one in the movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio – and a solid oak table (with matching upholstered chairs) that Brodhagen says weighs about 700 pounds. It took hard work, many hours of labour and the help of several family members to restore some of the lost charm to the old store. “We spent all summer redoing the flooring. We also had to completely redo the ceiling and my son-in-law Andrew had to take out and recaulk all the windows. Then we added a picket fence out front. This is a heritage building so we had to keep that in mind when we were renovating.� Happy with the results, Brodhagen says she’s delighted to have new friends and customers in the com-

Community Centre is the place to be Friday, October 26, 2012
One establishment that people should know more about is the Hart Community Centre, which was formerly the Lions Community Centre. The centre held classes of fitness, dance and body building for adults, as well as numerous children’s classes of beginner jazz dancing, intermediate jazz, ballet, stage, singing lessons, guitar lessons, gymnastics, homework club, and more. Many children from the Hart were finally able to participate in these activities, which were formerly denied them because of the inconvenience of the trip into town. The centre went on to hold teen dances,
a teen fashion show to commemorate Prince George’s birthday, community small business sales, and more. The Lions Community Centre, or Hart Community Centre, which it is now called, became a busy thriving centre on the Hart. One person, Alyce Bonnar, was the driving force behind the success of the Hart Community Centre. From the fabulous decorating to the scrumptious food, the Centre has a waiting list for rental of its facility for weddings and other functions. Its New Years Dinner & Dance is sold out many months in advance of the date.
