Is it better to add a fireplace or a pool? Several elements can affect the resale value of your home, starting with its surface area, location, and its age. Renovating bathrooms, kitchen, and paintwork are good resale investments, as are as a wide array of other improvements that can increase market value. Among the renovation projects that represent the best return on investment (between 50 and 75 percent), experts recommend replacing the heating system, finishing the basement, adding a fireplace and a garage, and installing solid wood flooring, new doors and windows, and good quality exterior siding.

According to the experts, projects that have little effect on the resale value of your home include the addition of a pool or a skylight. Of course, work that is done poorly or in bad taste will negatively affect the potential sales value of your property. Another thing to keep in mind is that if you entrust some of your renovations to a professional, always insist on a written agreement with a clear completion date. Wherever possible, opt for eco-energy solutions that will allow you to sell more quickly and at a higher price.

Other projects include replacing the roofing shingles, adding a patio and a central air-conditioning system (25 to 75 percent) and, to a lesser extent, the addition of a
home cinema and a fence as well as landscaping and a paved or asphalted driveway (25 to 50 percent).
A finished basement, a fireplace, garage, and hardwood flooring will usually increase the market value of your home.

Avoiding short-lived fads When the winter winds start blowing there’s nothing better than wrapping up in a coat which will not only keep us warm and cozy but will allow us to look stylish even on the coldest winter day. The selection now available in stores is very classic, a look of timelessness... there is nothing flashy or tawdry, just classic lines and sober colours which we can liven up with more colourful and original accessories. The classic cut and simple lines of the trench-coat style made of worsted gabardine, suits just about every figure and all occasions. Double-breasted styles are making waves on the fashion front as well. The cape is one of the highlights of the season. (Photo Esprit)
Capes were also much in evidence on the fashion runways, making a big comeback this season. Several designers propose long or short versions, giving a vintage touch to any outfit.
The wrap coat, very popular in the 80s and 90s, has also attained the status of classic, giving it pride of place in the fall and winter collections of many designers. This loose and belted overcoat makes for a cozy cocoon especially if made from cashmere or alpaca. It’s characterized by padded shoulders and wide, notched collars. Despite a few flashes of colour on the runways – blue, red, violet – sober colours, suitable for any occasion, such as grey, chamois and black seem much more popular. Plain fabrics dominate but some models catch the eye thanks to pretty paisley patterns or tartans.
A 1980s retrospective Already apparent for several seasons now, the influence of the 1980s is now reaching its height. If some of us are still hesitating about slipping on leggings or wearing a wide-shouldered, tailored suit, it’s time to succumb to the trend which has definitely become a must! If the woman of the 80s flaunted a never-failing self-confidence, this season’s cuts and colours can do just the same for today’s woman, whether it’s in the professional world or in the trendiest of night clubs. Shimmering materials such as sequins and satin blend beautifully with the opulence of leather and fur. Metallic finishes and vibrant tones of blue, red and pink electrify the omnipresent blacks and greys. Among emblematic clothing to be rediscovered: loose-fitting, masculine jackets sometimes gathered at the waist with a thin belt; loose sweaters with batwing sleeves; tapered pants; mini-dresses and pencil skirts. City-style accessories complete the 80s look, whether it involves the long leather glove, the ankle boot or the thigh boot. This season the latter has been designed with amazing chic by certain designers. Thanks to sober lines and the use of top-of-the line materials, the result is a world away from the gleaming boots which Julia Roberts wore in “Pretty Woman”. All you have to do now is lacquer your hair and dust off your reddest of red lipsticks and you’ll be ready to revisit one of the raciest decades of the 20th century! Dazzling colours, double-breasted jackets and suede ankle boots recall the fashions of the 1980s. (Photo Winners)

ALL SMILES Storage space in short supply? Professional, Personalized Denture Service Directly to the Public
To optimize the storage space you have in your home, start by deciding what you want to store and where. Solutions differ, depending on whether you want to store your clothes on hangers or folded, whether you need a place to put away sports equipment or books, or whatever it may be that gets in the way of your daily movements around the house. Storage options can include drawers, extra shelves, or cupboards,

walk-in closets with folding or sliding doors, and either permanent or moveable installations. Cupboards can be integrated into furniture, free-standing stairs can be incorporated under the steps, and stacked cupboards, mini-cupboards, and made-tomeasure cupboards can be adapted to just about any configuration. Modular magnetic storage systems allow the placement of shelves to be modified quickly and easily, depending on your needs. Practical and aesthetic, these shelves are held in place by magnets and are interchangeable in many different ways: they can be straight or leaning, jointed or separate, staggered or tightfitting. Storage units with drawers can be used to separate rooms, create a platform for a bed or sofa, or build a series of steps. Cupboards, closets, drawers, and shelves can be installed not only in corridors, entrance halls, bedrooms, and under stairs, but also in kitchens and bathrooms. What’s more, technical innovations and decorative elements added to the doors of some models allow them to be installed in living rooms and offices. In children’s bedrooms, loft beds can provide storage with ladders that double as bookshelves and bases that can be used as closets. In the kitchen, sliding doors covered in wood, stainless steel, or glass can hide an entire wall of floor-to-ceiling storage.

Travel the world from your couch
An eye-catching blaze Because a fireplace is the centrepiece of any room, decorative objects to be displayed around it must be chosen very carefully. Whether the mantel and surround of your fireplace are wide or narrow, decorative or not, there is one main principle to respect when highlighting this inviting feature: your personality. Start with your favourite work of art, placing it in the centre of the mantel to create a focal point. This could be a statue, a candelabrum, an antique bowl, or a flower arrangement. Then group similar objects here and there around this central piece, extending out to the ends of the mantel. “Similar” objects means choosing ones of the same style and colour. So surround your favourite object with vases in similar colours or photograph frames in the same style in order to create a balanced effect.
PHOTO: JUPITERIMAGES / THINKSTOCK
With balance still in mind, mix small objects with larger ones and resist the temptation to overcrowd. The individual interest of each item would disappear and the result would look disorganized. If you really don’t like the look of your fireplace, it is possible to improve its appearance. For example, you could paint the mantel and surround it with imitation marble or dress it up with little mirrors in such a way as to give the room more sparkle and light. You could also look for an antique mantelpiece and just install the lintel, on which you could attach a glass shelf for a perfect blend of styles and eras.
World traveling is the latest trend in home decorations, whether you are inspired by actual trips abroad or simply by your love for other cultures. However, an ethnic décor can only succeed if you choose one style and stick to it. Here are three exotic suggestions to inspire you. INDIA ISPIRATION Indian-inspired ethnic décors are all the rage at the moment, no doubt because of their shimmering reflections, intense colours, and dark woods. Designers are offer two versions of this style. One is simple and modern, as you would see in a room decorated with traditional and rustic furniture blended with stone-coloured or white walls. The other version draws inspiration from the world of Bollywood, with tones of pink, orange or blends of fuchsia and soft green.
TRIBAL ATMOSPHERE African tribal art no longer consists solely of masks and ebony plates. These days an African décor is an understated one that blends the dominant colours of Africa: beige, khaki, ochre, black, and white. Typical African furniture placed on a zebra skin is the central theme of the room, which is then decorated with quality objects such as weapons, musical instruments, terra-cotta, bronzes, and colonial-type wooden furniture. MOROCCAN MAGIC The main elements of a Moroccan-inspired décor include mirrors, typical furniture, and lighting. The centrepiece is a NorthAfrican style rug. All curves and abstract geometric designs, the Moroccan style is based on vivid colours and hammered copper lamps.
