When members of the Sports Zone Boltz men’s hockey team take to the ice tonight, they will each wear a special patch on their jerseys. The patch will sport the initials “TV” in memory of their friend and teammate Tim Vallee. Vallee, whose full name was Themy Alexandre Vallee-Apostolakis, was
shot and killed during a robbery last Wednesday in Honduras. Team member Alex Peterson said the close-knit squad is still in shock since hearing the tragic news on Thursday. The team gathered the following night to share memories of their FrenchCanadian friend. Peterson said Vallee, 34, played with passion on the ice. “Tim was very big on making our team
feel like a family, always encouraging us to go out for drinks after the game or getting together on other nights even when there wasn’t hockey,” he said. Peterson was one of the first people to meet Vallee, a conservation officer with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, when he moved to Abbotsford from Montreal about two years ago. Red tape and increased costs are causing organizers of the Fraser Valley Toy Run to question whether to continue hosting the annual event. If the weather is poor, like this year’s dampened attendance of just 150 riders, there are not enough donations to cover rising expenses. The annual social motorcycle ride, which collects items for Christmas bureaus in the Fraser Valley, leaves from meeting points in Mission and Chiliwack. Usually, 800 to 900 riders converge at the Ag-Rec Building in Abbotsford for coffee and donuts, a 50/50 and other draws. All participants bring a new toy for the Christmas Bureau, and there are cash donations – all collected and distributed to needy children and families in Abbotsford, Mission, Chilliwack, Hope and Agassiz. It was first organized by Mission’s Ma and Pa Hopkins (Lenore and Barney, late of Mission) 26 toy runs ago. They had attended a similar event for Vancouver Christmas

charities, and decided the Fraser Valley needed its own. However, organizers say that since 2010 their costs have increased dramatically. The charge to rent the Ag-Rec Building has gone from approximately $400 to about $1,300. At one time, event volunteers assisted police in traffic control. Now, organizers must submit a traffic plan and hire a flagging
company at a cost of approximately $1,500 for the day. Rhonda Santini said these costs are frustrating, because they detract from the amount donated to the Christmas Bureau. “It’s a total charity event – everything goes to the kids,” she said. She noted Universal Flagging already gives the event a reduced rate on its services. Barney Hopkins Jr. is
among those who have taken over running the event from his parents. He explained that if the run gets 800 riders, as it does many years, it is still worthwhile, even with the added costs. If it rains, as it did this year, and only 150 riders show up, organizers struggle to cover costs. He feels the Ag-Rec Building should be available to such a charity event free of charge.
“What is that building for – a money-maker, or for the community?” Katherine Jeffcoatt, the city manager of corporate communications, told The News it appeared the Toy Run had been overcharged for the rental of AgRec, and the bill would be adjusted. It subsequently was, but only by $116. Jeffcoatt said traffic control is administered by the Abbotsford Police, and is not a city hall issue. The event is one of the major contributors for the Abbotsford Christmas Bureau. “These guys – I can’t tell you how hard they work,” said Dave Murray, the Abbotsford Food Bank manager, which also operates the Christmas Bureau. He said on a typical year the event generates close to 1,000 new toys for Fraser Valley children, and between $6,000 and $10,000 in cash. The small turnout for this year’s run has the Christmas Bureau behind. “It’s a blow to us,” said Murray, adding the shortfall can only be made up through donations. “We’ll see if the community steps up.”

scooter rider struck A 75-year-old man was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries on Saturday after he was struck by a vehicle while riding his mobility scooter. Abbotsford Police Const. Ian MacDonald said the man was travelling in the north crosswalk at Hillcrest Avenue and Gladwin Road at about 2:20 p.m. He was struck by a 1984 Oldsmobile 88 making a left turn from Hillcrest onto Gladwin. The man was dragged about 15 to 20 metres, MacDonald said. He underwent surgery for a broken tibia, and also suffered cuts and bruises but is otherwise OK, MacDonald said. The 82-year-old female driver was ticketed for failing to yield to a pedestrian, and police have requested that the superintendent of motor vehicles review her driver’s licence. Meanwhile, the 88-year-old victim of a previous scooter collision died in hospital earlier this month. The man was in a crosswalk on Sept. 17 when he was struck by a Mazda CX7 that was travelling east on George Ferguson Way in Abbotsford. The 38-year-old female driver had apparently failed to stop for a red light at Bourquin Crescent, according to witnesses at the time.

Casey Vinet said there have been 17 such incidents in the areas of McMillan and McKee roads; Immel Street and Laburnum Avenue; and Marshall and Old Yale roads. The majority of the break-ins have occurred during the day and mainly involve the burglar(s) gaining entry by smashing a window or glass on a door. Vinet said jewelry, laptops and other electronics are being targeted. “In some cases, it is suspected that the thief is spending time casing the neighbourhood and waiting for people to leave their homes,” he said. Police are recommending the following tips to residents to avoid being targeted: Fully secure all doors and windows before leaving; consider the use of an alarm; watch out for each other and report all suspicious activity to police; and join/start a Block Watch program. “Words hurt. Someone doesn’t have to die for people to realize this,” said Grade 8 student Jenny Stobbart, who was among 45 community members at a candlelight vigil outside Abbotsford city hall on Friday night to raise awareness of bullying in response to the suicide of Amanda Todd. Participants wore pink in remembrance of Todd, a 15-year-old Port Coquitlam girl who recently committed suicide. She posted a video on YouTube in which she used a series of flash cards to tell of her experience of being blackmailed, bullied, and physically assaulted. Community activist Lakhbinder Jhaja addressed the issue with a brief speech before calling on those gathered to light their candles. Sukhi Dhami was one of the vigil organizers who knew all too well about the realities of bullying. Dhami has now come to terms with

It was an evening designed to pay tribute to those who have contributed to their community. On Friday night, Abbotsford MP Ed Fast presented more than 30 local residents with the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal. The medals, which commemorate Queen Elizabeth II’s 60th anniversary on the throne, are presented to Canadian citizens that have provided “significant contributions or achievements” to their communities. “On this occasion, it gives me great pleasure to honour the achievements of our fellow Abbotsford residents who have dedicated themselves in service to their peers, their community and to their country,” said Fast during the ceremony held at the Matsqui Centennial Auditorium. “These remarkable people have strengthened our country through their steadfast commitment to public service.” Fast called the recipients “eminent community leaders” adding they enrich every aspect of the community, including the arts, business, education, and service to the poor and vulnerable. “In doing so, they re-affirm Abbotsford’s reputation as the most generous community in Canada,” said Fast. Also on hand for the celebration was Abbotsford South MLA John van Dongen, who joined Fast in presenting four of the
medals. A standing ovation was given to former Abbotsford Mayor George Ferguson as he was presented his medal. The first mayor of Abbotsford, Ferguson said it was an honour to be recognized. “I appreciated it very much. It was a good selection of recipients and of course, there are many others who deserve that recognition too.” He said all of the people honoured have devoted much of their time to helping others. “That’s what makes a community. Those type of people who come forward and put themselves in position to try and help and make a better community.” The list of Queen’s Jubilee Medal recipients on Friday night included: Gerri Charles, Dorothy Dyck, Rudy Baerg, Mitch Borrows, Cap. Ted Bowman, Deirdre DeGagne, Harry de Jong, Brian Doerksen, Nancy Dyck, Calvin Dyck, George Ferguson, Dalip Singh Gill, Manpreet Grewal, Lynne Harris, Stan Hindmarsh, Dave Holmberg, Dave Kandal, Lorna Keith, Freddy Latham, Dave Murray, Sgt. Attempted home invasion Police are investigating an attempted home invasion Tuesday night on Flagman Place in west Abbotsford. Abbotsford Police were called to the scene at about 8:15 p.m. When officers arrived, they learned that four suspects had attempted to gain entry into the home. Sgt. Casey Vinet said one of the suspects was armed with a gun and another carried a blunt instrument. A resident of the home confronted the men at the front door and, after a brief physical confrontation, the suspects ran to a nearby vehicle and drove away. The victim was not injured.
Vinet said the suspects were all wearing dark clothing and had their faces covered. The get-away vehicle is described as a white domestic mid-sized car produced sometime in the 2000s. Vinet said police are continuing to investigate, and a motive for the attack has not been established. Flagman Place is located just east of the Abbotsford-Aldergrove border, south of Fraser Highway. Armed for the Internet
The international outpouring of shock, disbelief and grief at Amanda Todd’s death tells us much about how we use social media to connect and how little we understand the consequences of using it. It’s clear the worldwide web has opened a Pandora’s Box of issues among our young people, but when adults freely give up their privacy to a company that harvests their personal details for profit, it’s hard to expect children to know any better. This is not a case for shutting down the Internet – as impossible a task as stopping the tides – for the instant knowledge and communication it offers is a huge benefit. Nor is it a call to put more rules or laws in place to stop pornography, bullying, the distribution of hate messages and other horrible attributes of anonymous, instant and pervasive communication. Anti-bullying, child pornography and hate laws backed by enforce-
ment obviously need to be in place but the problem of child victimization isn’t easily stopped. The more walls that are erected, the more fun the challenge is for hackers and haters, the malware makers, the virusmongers, the attention-seekers and the sexually perverse. It’s an endless game of whack-a-mole, with solutions always just out of reach and more children at risk every day. It’s better to inoculate children against victimization so they can be more proactive about their own safety. Get them at school, in the home, at church and in the community centre. Children as young as five need to know how the Internet works. They need to know what risky behaviour is and the consequences of it. They need to know when online teasing becomes bullying, the difference between strangers and friends; and who to go to if they are being bullied. – Black Press

Views There was palpable disappointment among reporters when Greenpeace organizers clarified that U.S. actors Daryl Hannah and Mark Ruffalo weren’t actually going to join the sit-in against heavy oil pipeline proposals at the B.C. legislature on Monday. I was disappointed too. I would have liked to learn more about what a washed-up mermaid and an easily confused Incredible Hulk really believe about the North American oil industry. In the spirit of celebrity slacktivism, both sent statements of support. To be fair, Ruffalo may still be busy searching for the “truth” about 9/11. In 2007 he declared that the official U.S. government report on the terrorist attacks was “completely illegitimate” because “buildings don’t fall down like that.” I wonder what the relatives of those aboard the hijacked airliners think of him.
Hannah has had lots of free time since starring in the 1984 mermaid fantasy Splash. Now she’s mostly famous for getting arrested, and she did so again in Texas on Oct. 3, standing in front of earthmoving equipment building the southern section of the Keystone XL pipeline. It’s worth noting that the project Hannah tried to stop has the support of the Barack Obama administration. The southern section from Cushing, Oklahoma oil storage facilities to Texas refineries is indeed being built by the sinister foreign TransCanada Corp., but it doesn’t carry the dreaded Canadian “tar sands” oil that eco-celebrities are convinced will end life on Earth as we know it. It’s the northern section that Obama has temporarily opposed, after fervent demonstrations such as the one in Washington DC where Hannah’s first celebrity arrest occurred in 2011. At that time, Hannah recited the familiar talking points of the U.S. environmentalists who exclusively target Alberta. In a new book, oil sands pioneer and Suncor founder Rick George dissects Hannah’s claims, and asks why they were reported so widely and uncritically.
Hannah claimed “the contribution to the carbon in the atmosphere is unprecedented.” George cites a Royal Society of Canada report that concludes the entire oil sands operation is responsible for five per cent of Canadian emissions. Fossil-fuelled electricity generation is 16 per cent of Canada’s total. Vehicles and other transportation account for 27 per cent.
In the spirit of celebrity slacktivism, both sent statements of support. “How does the oil sands contribution possibly qualify as unprecedented?” George asks. Another Hannah quote: “I’ve been hearing about how many people have cancer that live downstream from the tar sands project.” Canadians heard that too, thanks in large part to an alarmist CBC documentary by David Suzuki featuring jet-set movie director James Cameron. George describes how this allegation
was made in 2006 by a doctor who claimed a cluster of rare bile cancer cases in the remote village of Fort Chipewyan, and blamed it on oil sands mining. Headlines blared around the world. George details the Alberta Health Services study that followed, identifying three such cases in 12 years. Statistically higher, yes. A general risk, no. Other types of cancer in Fort Chip were lower than the general population. This finding was endorsed by Australian, New Zealand, U.S. and Canadian researchers. The doctor who diagnosed the original bile cancers admitted: “These results were based on a small number of cases – there is no cause for alarm.” Was this news trumpeted around the world? You can guess the answer. My point here isn’t to make fun of ill-informed celebrities. It’s to counteract the fawning, scientifically ignorant coverage they are routinely given by the mainstream media. And I’m not promoting the oil sands or pipelines. I’m saying they should be considered based on facts, not foolishness. tfletcher@blackpress.ca

letters Some of the finer ‘perks’ of jail Re: Letter to the editor from Ramona Sanderson entitled “Jail is better than nursing homes.” You neglected to mention some of the finer ‘perks’ of being an inmate. What about body searches? This includes a mandatory strip search after you visit your family. And a room search, whenever it may strike the whim of the correctional staff. Another bonus – you may be one of the lucky ones who gets to share a 6x8 cell with another inmate. Visitors – yes, if they meet the criteria, pass all the requirements, and are prebooked weeks in advance, but only on certain days at certain times, which may also be denied with no reason. Shucks, did they travel across the country to see you? Oh well, maybe next time. Don’t forget the mandatory lockdowns, every day, four times a day, if you are lucky. The unlucky ones are locked down 23 hours a day, and when they are allowed to move, it’s alone with a guard as escort, to an area where you are still completely isolated from any other human being. Movement allowed when you are told to, and only when. Speak when you are spoken to. Got attitude? Let’s try 24-hour lockdown, see
if that helps. Living in direct contact with gang members, drug dealers, rapists, murderers, and the criminally insane. Having to watch your back 24/7 in a violent and volatile community, always being aware that your life is at risk in this community. No access to the outside, ever, unless approved for a limited number of reasons and you go with two armed correctional staff, chained hand and foot for everyone to point and look at. Did you want to go to your family member’s funeral? Sorry, not this time. Twenty-four hour surveillance, even in the bathroom and community shower. Personal belongings – don’t worry about it, you aren’t allowed any. Gifts on your birthday or at Christmas, or any other time – nope, not allowed. And the biggest perk of all – for the rest of your life, you are labelled undesirable scum, avoid at all costs. Maybe you should step inside one of our ‘luxurious’ institutions and see what it’s really like. I have, and I wouldn’t wish the life of an inmate on my worst enemy.

Re: Annual report to the people I read with some bemusement the letter from Abbotsford News reader Harry Vogt, and having been a reporter on municipal politics including school board, a school trustee and an election campaign specialist for a range of clients in the municipal, provincial and federal levels here in B.C. and the U.K., I wonder just what reader Vogt means by a stewardship report to the people who vote for these politicians. First of all, without the benefit of a political party election machine, a politician would not know all the people who voted for him or her, but only some – those identified by that politician’s campaign team’s voter identification team. Second, what with the Internet, Facebook, Twitter, politicians of all stripes are getting their message out to thousands of people day in and day out. At the provincial level, we used to have MLA reports on the local cablevision system
but that method is now a thing of the past, superseded by the three that I have mentioned. As for telling people in detail how the politician was involved in his or her work, well, that is taken care of by the politician’s website or the website of the political body to which the politician is involved. Readers such as Mr. Vogt need to carry out a responsible voter’s inquiry into the actions of the politician of their concern. As for MLA John van Dongen becoming an independent politician, that is probably the smartest move that he could make after finding out how anachronistic thinking rules supreme in John Cummins’ party. As for Abbotsford-Mission MLA Randy Hawes, he will probably go back into real estate / development or local politics, seeking what we have at the municipal level in Mission. Clark presents Classics Canadian country star at AESC in March
Canadian country sensation Terri Clark will bring her “Classics” tour to Abbotsford on March 8. ACS students make difference Funds support project in Ethiopia
Students and staff at Abbotsford Christian elementary will donate $2,500 in prize money toward a project in Ethiopia. The school won the Mayor’s Award in the 2012 Run for Water – an award recognizing the school with the most student participation and top fundraising effort. The cash prize is sponsored by Envision Financial. The annual Run for Water partners with the non-profit Hope International to provide clean water systems in Ethiopia. Principal Roy van Eerden and a group of teachers decided the best way to use the award money was to continue to support Ethiopian kids by giving the funds to Hope
International. The money will help the organization renovate a school in the village of Koshale, which is in the process of receiving a clean water system. Run for Water spokesperson Randall Peters will travel to Koshale in the coming months to meet with and interview villagers for a video, which will enable local kids to see the impact of their fundraising efforts. The film will be made available to any school interested in seeing how their fundraising is making a difference or to those interested in getting involved. For more information, visit runforwater.ca.
Use of rainwater wins city award A system that uses the city’s ample supply of rainwater to make ice at the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre has received provincial recognition. The City of Abbotsford, together with the District of Mission, has accepted a Union of BC Municipalities award in leadership and innovation for the project. The award was part of a joint
Abbotsford/Mission Water and Sewer Commission project that installed a rainwater harvesting system at the rink. It is the first professional indoor ice arena in the world to use harvested rainwater to make ice. The estimated municipal water savings is 830,000L per hockey season. The water tanks are stored in the boiler room and fed through an internal gutter system. The

Premier Christy Clark was in Abbotsford on Wednesday night for the nomination of her government’s finance minister, Abbotsford West MLA Michael de Jong. In a campaign-style event in a packed and partisan conference room at Garden Park Tower, the pair talked about their government’s record, and about bigticket projects in Abbotsford, including the Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Centre, airport expansion, and the achievement of gaining university status for UFV. She joked that he is no Cory Schneider, and he is “not even Roberto Luongo.” When tournament time rolls around, she said some parents take the attitude that it is not worth the travel time if they are not sure they have a good chance of winning, but similarly, she needs Liberal party members to get in the game. “We’re in for the toughest tournament free enterprise has faced since 1996,” she said. “We need you to show up.” She said B.C. is first in Canada in job growth, growth in government spending is at its lowest rate since 2004, the province has the lowest tax rates of any province and “Mike is balancing our budget this year.” De Jong said he looks forward to defending the record of the Liberals. “I want to run again; no one had to convince me,” he said. “I’m damn proud of the record of this government.”

Comedy opens at UFV Once in a Lifetime, the opening production of the University of The Fraser Valley theatre department’s 2012/13 season, is a comedy from George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart. The story follows the progress of a trio of failing vaudevillians, who attempt to boost their chances of employment by working as elocutionists in a 1920s Hollywood that is in the process of switching from silent movies to the talkies. The show is a full-blown extravaganza, filled with a host of crazy characters and
farcical situations. Director Ian Fenwick has assembled a large cast of UFV theatre students for this production. Performers playing major roles include: Danielle Warmenhoven as May Daniels, Eli Funk as Jerry Hyland, Karliana DeWolff as Susan Walker, Thomas Smith as George Lewis, Melissa Regamble as Mrs Walker and John Carroll as Mr. Glogauer. The Mission Arts Centre Rock Family Gallery will feature the work of artist Kat Wahamaa, with a photographic exhibition called Openings. The show runs Nov. 6-24 with an artist’s reception on Nov. 9 at 7 p.m. Known primarily as a singer-songwriter and recording artist, Wahamaa has had a long career spanning various disciplines including theatre arts, community cultural development and social justice and advocacy. However, she has been showcasing her photography more in recent years. “In terms of the content of this show I have always been fascinated by openings,” said Wahamaa. “Doors, windows or archways, manifest architectural detail, give history lessons and become works of art at the hand of the elements. Those openings found in nature, and those within us, suggest another way of being or perceiving. All offer an invitation.” The photographs in this show reflect these themes with “openings” from such locales as England, Crete, Japan, Key West, Vancouver and the Fraser Valley. During the artist’s reception, Wahamaa and her musical and life partner Tony Rees will play some songs from their upcoming release Everything Blue. Child identification clinic
The Abbotsford Police Department is offering a free child identification clinic on Oct. 26 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at sponsor Envision Financial’s branch, located at 2670 Minter St. Members of the community are invited to visit the branch with their families, where volunteers from the APD will be on site to fingerprint the children and provide them with their personalized child ID book. There will also be popcorn, balloons, candy and Halloween colouring for the kids. “The Child Identification Program provides one of the most valuable resources you can have on hand in the event your child goes missing,” said Kelly Pater, APD community policing coordinator. “All the information the police will

Skills Connect for Immigrants
Michael Bennett’s famous 1975 Broadway musical, A Chorus Line is coming to the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre on Oct. 30 at 7:30 p.m.. A Chorus Line is a Tony Award and Pulitzer Prizewinning show, and is well known for being one of the longest running successful American musical productions. Revolving around 17 dancers auditioning for a spot in a chorus line, Bennett’s production allows the audience to get a glimpse of stage life behind the curtains, and to see what dancers and entertainers go through in order to get a job. Director of this year’s production, Baayork Lee, who created the role of Connie in the original Chorus Line, and who was Bennett’s assistant choreographer, said this year’s cast includes, “26 young and talented dancers, from all over the States, and they are so excited to perform.” Lee has been involved with A Chorus Line for 37 years and has seen the musical tour around the world. “It continues to be exciting working with new people, and seeing how they absorb the style of the musical,” she said. The cast that performs in A Chorus Line knows firsthand what it is like to try and land a job on Broadway, which makes their characters all the more convincing. “The Abbotsford audience will leave with a good lesson, and will understand why we love what we do, we love singing, we love dancing, we love being on stage,” said Lee. Charges have been stayed against two Abbotsford men accused of being involved in a violent home invasion in November 2010. Jared Klade, 25, and Michael Lopeke, 24, were each charged with using a firearm in the commission of an offence, break and enter, unlawful confinement, and using an imitation firearm. Their trial was scheduled to begin Oct. 15, but their charges were stayed. Neil McKenzie, communications counsel with the provincial Criminal Justice Branch, said several Crown wit-
nesses could not be located and served with subpoenas to attend on the trial date. McKenzie said Crown had applied to have the evidence provided by the witnesses at the preliminary inquiry entered as evidence at the trial, but this was not approved. “In the absence of the witnesses, there was no longer a substantial likelihood of conviction and, as a result, Crown directed a stay of proceedings,” he said. McKenzie said Crown counsel had sought an adjournment of the trial date, but that application was also turned down. The home invasion occurred in the 33200 block of

With star running backs John Beckerleg and Ben Cummings sidelined due to injury, Friesen led the T-Wolves to a 42-14 victory over crosstown rival Abbotsford Senior on Friday afternoon in AA high school football action. Just two weeks into the PacWest volleyball season, one thing is clear – Abbotsford boasts two of the top women’s teams in the province, if not the nation. The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades have surged to the stop of the conference standings at 4-0, picking up a pair of weekend wins at home over the Camosun Chargers. But it was the Columbia Bible College Bearcats who made the biggest splash on the weekend, as they knocked off the defending national champion Vancouver Island University Mariners in straight sets on Friday. The Mariners bounced back for a straight-sets win of their own on Saturday, but the Bearcats proved they’re a team to be reckoned with. Their 1-3 record doesn’t necessarily
show it yet – they dropped two hard-fought games to UFV to open the season – but they’re a bona fide contender. “It’s a huge confidence-builder,” said CBC coach Duncan Harrison, who got 12 kills from April Van Wieren and 11 from Sadie Ball on Friday. “We talked all preseason about wanting to be in that group with UFV and VIU. “Coming so close against UFV (on opening weekend) was a heartbreaker. But playing the way we did against VIU confirmed in our own minds that we’re ready to take that step.” The Cascades, national bronze medalists last year, beat Camosun in four sets Friday, with Krista Hogewoning leading the way with 16 kills, four blocks and 10 digs. They completed the sweep in three sets on Saturday, behind 12 kills from Kayla Bruce.
The story of the weekend for UFV was their impressive depth, as coach Dennis Bokenfohr made sure every player on his bench saw some game action. “At one point, two of my three captains were on the sidelines at the same time, cheering everyone else on,” Bokenfohr noted. “And we were still doing well, so it was great to see.” On the men’s side, the Cascades (1-3) fell to Camosun in four sets on Friday, but bounced back for their first win of the season, a five-setter, on Saturday. Trevor Nickel had 12 points (six kills, five blocks, one ace) in the victory. The Bearcats men suffered a pair of defeats against VIU and saw their record fall to 2-2. • Both local programs hit the road this weekend. The Cascades play the Capilano Blues, while the Bearcats face the Douglas Royals.

Kassian, the hulking 6’3”, 214-pound winger obtained by the Canucks last spring in the Cody Hodgson trade, was a monster all weekend. He gave the Heat fits in the offensive zone, and he fought – and won – both nights. “That’s a power forward game,” Wolves coach Scott Arniel said Friday. “People don’t really want to go in corners when he’s out there. He’s a handful to hold onto when he’s playing that game, and he showed his skill, too.” Rookie phenom Baertschi has been hogging the early headlines for the Heat, but don’t sleep on Horak, who has scored in four straight games to open the campaign. The versatile sophomore forward from the Czech Republic suited up for 61 NHL games with the Calgary Flames last season, but struggled upon being sent down to Abbotsford late in the year. “He didn’t know his role, and he was trying to settle into a team after going through the whole let-down of coming down (from the NHL),” Ward analyzed. “He came back in with a method to his madness. Here’s a kid who wants to play in Calgary.” Heat goalie Barry Brust, seeing his first action after Taylor started the first three games, made 25 saves in Saturday’s win. FUREY BROUSSON Celebrating the life of Charles Brousson April 18, 1932 - October 18, 2012
Our hearts are full of memories as we share with you that on Thursday morning Charles passed peacefully to his rest at home while his wife, June, sat close by his side holding his hand. Besides being a passionate advocate of healthy living and all things related to health at Silver Hills Bakery, Charles was actively involved in M2W2 Prison Ministries, the treasurer of Gladwin Heights Housing Society, and was a board member of the Ecoworks Landscape Services. His parents and older brother, David, predecease Charles. Charles is fondly remembered by his loving wife June who he was married to for 56 precious years, son Bradley (Carmen) Brousson of Abbotsford, daughter Janice (Byron) Smith of Arizona, daughter Linda Brousson of Australia, daughter Shae (Davey) Blake of Victoria, daughter Raven (James) Oddstad of Surrey, ten grandchildren, three great grandchildren, brother Claude (Irene) Brousson of Aldergrove, and brother-in-law Chuck Thurston of Hope. Charles’ hope in the soon coming of His Savior was the theme of his life and while we miss him now, we look forward to spending eternity with him. A Memorial Service will be held at 6 pm, Friday, October 26, at the Abbotsford Seventh-day Adventist Church located at 1921 Griffiths Rd, Abbotsford, BC V2S 6H3. Private, athletic, loyal, entrepreneurial, trustworthy, competitive, exacting, proud, justly fair, tenacious: these are all things Allan. Hard to live with? Sometimes, yes. Hard to get to know? Definitely. Loyalty was number one: we knew he was there for us. Tough on the outside, softcentered. He believed in giving 110% to all he put his hand to, whether business or sports. Allan expected the best from all around him - not least of all, himself. Born in Kingston, Ontario, adopted in infancy, grew up prairie-poor in Saskatchewan. Playing sports, especially hockey and baseball was his passion. Allan married Carey, his wife of 38 years in Abbotsford, BC. Allan started work at Matsqui Institution, and later became the District Director for the National Parole Service. Carey and Allan started Abbotsford Printing which they ran together for 14 years. Next, a paper supply company was formed. In 1991 they purchased and managed Eze Rent-It-Centre. The past 17 years they have owned 2 businesses in Alberta, while residing here. Through the printing years, they started their family of three daughters and one son: Nichol, Vanessa, Alexandra and Conrad Furey. Allan always thought outside the box. Many would come to him for advise either for personal matters or for business related ones. He loved the “game” all his life, not as a fan but as a competitor. He played AAA baseball, farm team level hockey, racquetball, running, weight lifting. His nemesis -golf -- caused literally hundreds of thousands of balls to flee from his clubs over the years. And he was addicted to is children’s sports too. Allan was agnostic most of his life. Months before he left us he trusted Jesus Christ with his soul. Allan died at age 66, the result of complications from multiple massive strokes in December of 2011. Allan will leave a chasm in our home and will never be forgotten. We love you and miss you Allan. God’s speed and see you on the other side. In his memory, a celebration of Allan’s life will be held in BC, Alberta and Saskatchewan. Notice will be given at a later date. GOERTZ, Vernon Raymond A gentle, kind, loving, faithful husband, father and grandfather, Vern has gone home to his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in the early morning on October 16, 2012. He is predeceased by his parents Jacob and Elizabeth, brother Orval, nephews Ronald and Bradley and daughter-in-law Sheila. He is survived by his wife of 62 years Marian, two sons Gary (Elaine) and Jim (Irene), three daughters Brenda (Bert Gillman), Diane (Panteli Mousouliotis) and Marcia (John Viggiani) and seventeen grandchildren, as well as siblings Evelyn Seifred, Donald and Clinton. Born February 11, 1926 in Hodgville Saskatchewan, Vern moved to BC in 1947 with his parents and siblings. He and his brother and their wives owned and operated Montrose Dry Cleaners in Abbotsford for over 25 years. A Memorial Service was held Friday October 19th at 1:30 pm at the Abbotsford Pentecostal Assembly. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the PAOC Missions Fund. Heartfelt thanks to the skilled and passionate professionals from the Emergency, Cardiac Care, and Palliative Care Units at the Abbotsford Regional Hospital, for their care and attention to Vern in his final days.

Irene passed away calmly and quietly on October 16 at the age of 93 after almost a year of health problems which she faced with courage, fortitude and often, humour. She was born near Broadview, Saskatchewan. She is survived by her son Gordon, daughter Geraldine, and sister Eva, as well as many other relatives and close friends. Her devoted husband Allan passed away at the age of 58 at Christmas of 1975. Irene was known for her energetic and hard-working nature. Her mission was to provide her family with a warm, clean, organized home and tasty meals which were always followed by dessert. Housekeeping, shopping and cooking were her passions. These were things that she continued to do until a short time ago. She was keen to find the best way to do anything, and a lover of appliances and gadgets. Above all, Irene wanted to be helpful to others. During the last year, Irene was treated with kindness and compassion by many at ARHCC. Special thanks to Dr. Loewen for his dedicated support of Irene and his endeavours to optimize the physical resources she had. Also thanks to Roger Young NP, ACE nurses Bonnie, Lisa and Vera, student nurses Ryan and Samantha, who were all special to her.

Elsie, as she was known, was predeceased by her husband, Jacob P. Wiebe, to whom she was married for 62 years. She was also predeceased by their oldest daughter, Judy Fast. She is survived by her one remaining sibling, Lydia Regier (Kamloops, B.C.) and three children - Doreen (Dave) Pulliam (Dallas, OR), Ron (Sue) Wiebe (Abbotsford, B.C.), and Donna (Terry) Warren (Nanaimo, B.C.). She is also survived by six grandchildren and three great grandchildren. During their lifetime, Jake & Elsie owned and operated Nodge Manufacturing, working together to build a successful manufacturing business.
