Abbotsford News Thursday, October 18, 2012

my The kids are back in homework-mode, the rationing of Halloween candy is just a boo away, and before you can catch your breath, it’s time to go Christmas shopping.

Lepp Farm Market provides unique couples outings with their cooking classes. On Thursday, Nov. 8 Chef Nathan Hyam will be conducting his class “Dinner for Two...Again!” The evening will begin with him whipping up an impressive appetizer of roasted red pepper and artichoke bruschetta, followed by an exquisite chicken dish entrée. The finale is a dessert of ice cream topped with a honey blueberry sauce.

Let’s face it: you deserve a night out!

A variety of cooking classes are offered until December and can be viewed at leppfarmmarket. com. Tickets are $67 and can be purchased over the phone or in person at Lepp Farm Market, located at 33955 Clayburn Rd.

Call the babysitter and enjoy a date night, or put your husband on bedtime duty and get the girls together just like in the good old days. Abbotsford offers plenty of opportunities to explore your inner connoisseur, dance the night away, or giggle with your gals over a shared appetizer. So put on your little black dress, and kiss the kids goodbye, because tonight you’re on the town!

Abbotsford Parks, Recreation and Culture offers dancing lessons at Abbotsford Recreation Centre. Check out the Fall Program Guide for details. Suburban Swing, located at the Abbotsford Seniors Association Ballroom on 33889 Essendene Avenue, offers beginner swing classes every Sunday evening from 7:45-8:30, followed by open floor dancing until 11:00 p.m.

For couples looking for equal parts romance and affordability, there are numerous restaurants in Abbotsford that now offer special “Date Night” menus. Greek Islands, Milestones, and occasionally restaurant 62 (as their menu changes often) all provide “date night” selections specifically for couples looking to enjoy a full dining experience at a reasonable price.

So put on that little black dress, and kiss the kids goodbye because tonight, you’re on the town!

Between the vines In my opinion, there is never a good reason to not drink bubbles. A little bubbly can fancy up the drabbest event, honour the most special occasion or simply make you smile. And with the Christmas party season approaching (don’t blink!), now is a good time to stock up on sparklers. During my recent trip to the Fall Okanagan Wine Festival, I was a guest for two nights at the lakeside Walnut Beach Resort, where I had the good fortune to sip on many B.C. wines. I was particularly impressed with two new Okanagan-made sparkling wines: 2011 Bella Sparkling Chardonnay Brut and 2011 Bella Sparkling Gamay Noir Brut, each priced at just under $24.

The Chardonnay, with its citrusy and toasty nose, is influenced by soft oak that does not interfere with the lively citrus, melon and stone-fruit palate. The bubbles are consistent and

provide a lively mouthfeel. You can pair this wine with almost anything, but I suggest you try it with various seafood canapés, warm or cold, salty or spicy. Your palate will be freshened between bites. The Gamay Noir is my favourite of the two. It is very (very) difficult to have just one glass of this wine. It is packed with aromas of red berries and underlying floral notes, while the palate bursts with strawberries, cranberries, tart rhubarb and citrus. This is a fresh, vivacious sparkling wine, with a mouth-filling mousse made up of bubbles that are persistent, but not aggressive. Bella Gamay Noir, will pair nicely with almost any kind of food, formal or casual. Try it with a Reuben sandwich, smoked salmon canapés or traditional turkey dinner with trimmings.

mycity For Thrifty Foods’ store manager Michael Bryant, every day is a chance to make the community of Abbotsford a better place. “I love Abbotsford,” says Bryant, whose typical day on the job at the Thrifty Foods on North Parallel Road involves “keeping customers and staff happy.”

He adds that some of the most special moments during his time as a Rotarian have come from actually “putting faces to the names of the community members we have helped.”

Bryant boasts that he has a “wonderful job,” made especially satisfying by a town that is full of “happy people and some of the nicest customers.”

Bryant thrives on the human connection that comes with his involvement with the club, and enjoys the feeling of making a difference.

Between successfully managing the grocery store and caring for his wife and two children, Bryant also actively supports the community through his work as a Rotarian.

myhealth Pro Motion Physiotherapy now offers

Therapeutic Laser Treatments for Peripheral Neuropathy people attain the results they want, reduce their medications, and regain their life.”

Jeremy Bensler, registered Physiotherapist and owner of Pro Motion Physiotherapy proudly announces the addition of K-Laser Class IV therapeutic laser treatments for pain relief and enhanced tissue healing for those suffering from peripheral neuropathy. “My colleagues and I are very excited to offer these treatments to our patients,” says Bensler. “Until now there have been few options other than potentially harmful medications for those suffering from the numbness, tingling and burning sensations associated with peripheral neuropathy.”

The high power class IV K-Laser was approved for use in Canada in June 2011. Although therapeutic lasers have been used for many years, most are Class IIIa or IIIb, with power output under 500 milliwatts. The K-Laser delivers up to 12,000 milliwatts of power. The higher power allows for a therapeutic dosage of laser energy to a larger volume of tissue in a shorter period of time, which produces more immediate, and more significant results.

Peripheral neuropathy is a term used to describe damage to nerves of the arms and legs, most often caused by diabetes, chemotherapy, alcohol abuse, vitamin deficiency or trauma. Bensler claims that regardless the cause of the nerve damage, the high power laser can help heal the nerves and restore normal function. As well as helping those suffering with nerve pain, the laser treatment is also highly effective in treating arthritis, low back pain, ligament sprains and tendon injuries. Bensler says, “The K-Laser is absolutely the best thing our office has implemented as it helps more

FALL Gems written by Chef Jeff Massey restaurant 62 Last week Chris from One Love Organic Farm, in Abbotsford, arrived at the restaurant with a van full of squash. The variety was amazing. It is tempting to fill every corner of the dining room with different shapes and sizes. Nothing says abundance and harvest like a squash. They are easy enough to grow that they can take over your garden and certain varieties such as the Hubbard will last the whole winter in a cool dry place. The two most popular squash grown at One Love Farms are the Delicata (also called Bohemian or Sweet Potato squash) and Butternut. Delicata are oblong shaped with light yellow skin striped dark green. They are starchy and we use them for our sweet potato soup served with blue cheese and poached pears. The skins are delicate and there is no need to peel them before roasting or cooking them for soup. This isn’t just a time saver: like many vegetables, there is a lot of nutrition in the skin and just beneath. Butternut, Hubbard and other winter squash are amazing roasted with hard aromatic spices. Slice the squash in half and place it skin-side-up on a bed of cinnamon, cloves and cardamom. The flavours will infuse the meat of the vegetable. When it is cooked through, scoop it out of the skin for a puree or for soup. This is restaurant 62`s recipe for Butternut Squash Bisque:

t Butternu isque Squash B

Directions: • Quarter squash lengthways, drizzle with olive oil, season with salt. Bake at 375ºF until starting to brown and is softened. • While it is roasting, heat olive oil in a large pot and add onions, celery, carrots, sugar, salt and spices. Sweat over low heat.

myfood • When the squash is roasted, peel off the skin and cut into large dice. • Add the squash to the vegetables, cover with water, and add the heavy cream. • Give it a good stir and bring it to a boil, turn down the heat to a simmer and let simmer for a couple minutes, taste to see if it has enough salt. • Blend the mixture until smooth. If the soup is too thick, add a bit of water and bring back to a simmer. • Garnish with maple syrup mixed with heavy cream.

Wine Pairing Pairing squash with wine is largely dependent upon the spice accoutrements. For the winter spiced roasted squash, a Gewürztraminer can pair nicely. For a soup served with maple cream (like the recipe above) an oaked Chardonnay such as Mt. Lehman Winery’s “Barrel Raised Chardonnay” will be perfect as maple syrup and oak have a volatile molecule that links them. A key rule of thumb for wine pairing to keep in mind when working with squash is to make sure that the sweetness of the wine matches or exceeds the sweetness of the food.

Fall Fix

FOR THE FASHIONISTA

The fall fashion season is in full force, and there are a few key trends in the spotlight. Peakabook Print Chiffon Blouses: Now not only only for summer! Keep your fall look light and fresh by balancing this alluring look with jeggings or pencil cut trousers! The Shboot!! (The Shoe Boot!): Double your style this fall with these 2 in 1 stunners! With styles that take you from day to night the shoe boot is the perfect "pair" with all of fall's lavishly layered looks. Another strong trend for fall 2012 is the use of faux fur either as full pieces – such as vests and jackets – or as accents on other pieces to create a luxe feel. If none of these excite you, look around – there are plenty of other fall trends to suit every taste.

But there’s a trick to avoid looking like Mrs. Claus: keep it simple. Pick one key piece in the vibrant shade – a flirty dress or coloured jeans, for example – and downplay the rest. For example, temper that bright-red dress with black pieces, such as a bold chunky necklace or a pair of sexy pumps. And pick a hue that looks right on you – an orangey-red for skin with warm undertones and a bluish-red for cool skin tones.

Bangs can instantly transform your look, but the trick is finding the right fringe to work with the shape of your face. Heart-shaped faces look best with wispy, side-swept bangs that draw attention to the eyes.

The strong jaw line of a square face looks best with longer side-swept bangs that hit just below the eyebrow and are a bit longer on the sides, while an oval face can carry off any cut.

Clip-ins are an easy way to work with the trend and not have to deal with the grow-out process!

Halloween horrors Fun and safe alternatives to traditional trick-or-treating

Jack-o-lanterns and costumed kids are among the many things people instantly associate with Halloween. So is the tradition of trick-or-treating, where kids go door-to-door asking for treats that may make dentists cringe.

SPIRIT HALLOWEEN >>>

Host a haunted house. A haunted house for kids and their friends allows children to dress up in their favourite costumes and enjoy their favorite treats while being scared witless. Parents can join in the fun by dressing up in their own costumes. At the end of the night, award the child who had the best costume, and be sure to send each child home with a package of goodies.

While trick-or-treating is something most kids love,, for parents the safety concerns can be overwhelming. Kids innocently knocking on strangers’ doors and asking for candy is not necessarily the safest way a child can spend an autumn evening. Parents concerned about their children trick-ortreating can embrace several fun alternatives to trick-or-treating that still embody the spirit of Halloween.

Many of today’s community centres and malls open their doors to costumed kids on Halloween, providing treats in much the same way kids would get them if they trick-or-treated the old-fashioned way. They’re likely to head home with a bag filled with goodies and maybe even some coupons or gift certificates to their favourite stores.
