La bohème In less than a week, Vancouver Opera will transport audiences to the Bohemian world of 19th century Paris. Romance, drama and humour will come alive in La bohème, dubbed “the world’s most popular love story” by the New York Times. A heartbreaking portrayal of youth and beauty struggling to survive though hardship, the VO’s production combines evocative sets on a grand-opera scale and lavish costumes. The 1996 rock opera Rent is loosely based on Puccini’s classic, but set in New York rather than Paris’ Latin Quarter. Opening night is Oct. 20, with subsequent performances Oct. 23, 25 and 27 at 7:30pm and a matinee performance on Sunday, Oct. 28 at 1:30pm at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre (Georgia and Hamilton). Tickets start at $35 and are available at VancouverOpera.ca or 604-683-0222. Supplied photo

Finding the best barista There’s that wonderful moment when you’re handed your freshly made latte and you marvel at the beautiful design in the milk foam. But then your craving for caffeine kicks in, you take that first sip and sadly, the design is no more. Baristas take a lot of pride in their work, even though they know their artistry will survive only a few seconds. On Oct. 20 from 11am to 4pm, some of the best will gather at Vancouver Library Square for the Vancouver International Latte Art Competition, sponsored by Blenz. While they do their magic in two categories — Free Pour Latte Art and Etching Latte Art — the crowd can enjoy free lattes, coffee and hot chocolate for the kids. Celebrity judges include Lori Joyce from the hit reality show Cupcake Girls, Sammy Piccolo from Prado Cafe, Richard Wolak from the Vancouver Foodster.com, Mijune Pak from Follow Me Foodie.com, Wayne Wright from Bravo Coffee, Aki Tokuhara — latte art etching champion, and Caren McSherry from the Gourmet Warehouse. There will also be tea tasting and a matcha demonstration, a live performance by Harbour Dance Centre, public canvas painting, caricature drawings and a button making station. ThatBaristaThing.com

Vancouver, meet our very own Cake Boss By Kelsey Klassen
ebrations such as Oreo’s 100th anniversary.
W
How did you discover your talent for cake art? I started dabbling in cake design when I was in university, studying science, after I realized how much I was missing a creative outlet. I started to look at the job market for pastry chefs and realized that pastry school seemed to be necessary for even the most entry level job. I chose Vancouver Community College because of its fantastic reputation, diversity of the pastry program and the connections all of the instructors have with the industry in Vancouver. Most of the cake decorating skills I have are things I have learned along the way with a lot of trial and error. I also had the opportunity to work with Cake Opera Co. in Toronto shortly after finishing pastry school, which was an amazing learning experience. When I started my business, I never expected things to take off as quickly as they
hile summer is the season of playing it safe — with (moderately) predictable weather wrapping newlyweds in a warm embrace — fall ushers in breathtaking displays that make for gorgeous wedding inspiration. Brides thinking of braving the chill next year for that magical soft sunlight only found in September and October, should start planning one small detail as soon as possible. The wedding cake. Award-winning Vancouver pastry chef and artist Anna Wawzonek (pictured, [1]) can create an edible work of art to rival even the most vivid autumn display. After opening Anna Elizabeth Cakes in 2011, her hand painted fondant designs won quick praise in Wedding Bells and Wedluxe magazines and were sought after for cel-

did. I knew what I was making was a quality product and that my style was unique, but I expected it to take time to make the industry connections and get my brand out there. I was lucky enough to have three of my cakes featured in a high end wedding magazine less than six months after opening which was a huge boost for my business. I ended up booking close to 80 weddings that first summer and things have just grown from there. What are some highlights? This past March, I was commissioned as one of three bakers across Canada to create a gigantic cake for Oreo Cookie’s 100th birthday. It was an intensive process involving interviews, reviews and submitting sketches. I was honored to be chosen and had an amazing time creating a cake that was over three feet tall and touring around Vancouver with it!
Why do you think so much importance is placed on the tradition of cake at big events? A wedding cake serves as a gorgeous centerpiece for your wedding day. In many weddings it is prominently displayed at a reception and is a great way to tie together all elements of your big day and really express your style as a couple. What are the various techniques a pastry chef and professional decorator must master? Before mastering any decorating techniques, I think that it is really important to master the basics. From creating the perfect recipes, to icing a cake evenly and smoothly, to the structure involved in having a tiered wedding cake that doesn’t sag or fall over, to covering a cake in the perfect layer of fondant. If you can master all of these skills to create the perfect cake base, even the simplest decorations will look stunning.

If an amateur wanted to ratchet it up a notch, what are the must-have tools/equipment? There are so many fancy tools and gadgets out there on the market, but I like to stick with the basics. If you don’t own an electric stand mixer like a Kitchen Aid, go out and buy one now. They will make any and all baking tasks so much easier, from whipping egg whites to creaming butter and sugar. My second favourite tool is an X-acto knife. Using one of these gives me the flexibility to create and cut out my own templates and they are the best tool for cutting straight lines of sugar ribbon or whatever you are creating. Finally, don’t be afraid to look for inspiration in the hardware store, which is where a lot of my favourite tools come from. From levels to Lucite light covers that provide beautiful textures, thinking outside of the box will help you create unique work that stands out. Your Grouse Mountain cake floored me [4]. What is your favourite design you have done? I think my favourites are the most unique designs, where I spent a long time conceptualizing and sketching before starting to create the final product. Here are a few of my favourites: This cake [2] was chosen as one of Canada’s prettiest cakes by Wedding Bells. I loved being able to bring in berries, blossoms and wheat, all made of sugar, in a way that I think still looks elegant and refined. (Kim Kalyn Photography,Wedding Bells) The more flowers the better, in my opinion. The watercolour ombre technique I used on this cake [3] has become one of the most popular requested design elements. (Vasia Photography, Wedluxe) Cakes can be shaped like anything. Making lifelike tomatoes, bacon and lettuce for this cake [5] was so much fun! (Anna Elizabeth Cakes photo) What are your favourite batter/icing flavour combos? My favourites change with the season. I am a big fan of incorporating local and seasonal flavours into my cakes. For summer weddings, vanilla cake always seems to win out over a richer chocolate, paired with summer fruits like raspberries, blueberries and even cherries — the most popular by far is our vanilla cake with toasted coconut butter cream and fresh raspberries. The sweetness of the butter cream, with the tartness of the raspberries is the perfect combination and is a nice light bite after a big wedding meal. In the late fall and winter, most of my clients end up going with a chocolate dessert. Our chocolate cake with salted caramel butter cream, spiced dark chocolate ganache and candied pecans is always a crowd pleaser. What is your favourite indulgence, foodwise? The perfect Cannelés Bordelais. These are a small cake made from a rum flavoured crepe batter that is poured into copper tins lined with beeswax. The result is a dark, almost burnt looking pastry with a crunch on the outside and perfectly soft, melt in your mouth inside. My mouth is watering just thinking about them. What are your top 5 tips for the perfect wedding cake? 1. Start your search for your wedding cake at least six months in advance. If you have found a cake designer that you love, chances are other couples love them too and popular summer dates
may book up early. There is no harm in emailing to ask for a quote even a year in advance. When contacting potential cake designers, make sure to give them as much information as possible so that they can provide you with the most accurate quote: wedding date, the number of guests expected, wedding location Cand even examples of other cakes you have seen and liked. Wedding cake M prices are based on the number of guests you are Y looking to serve, the size of the cake, and intricacy of the design. CM 2. When you go in to meet with a potential cake MY designer, remember that they are the professional. While it is our job to bring your vision CY to life, we also have the experience of countless CMY wedding cakes to know what will work and what won’t. For example, a butterK cream-covered cake at an outdoor wedding during the summer is not a good idea. 3. Don’t be afraid to be original. I have many requests for a cake to be recreated exactly from a picture. That cake has already been the centerpiece at someone elses wedding. Let the designer work with that style and even some of the design elements to create a cake that is unique to you. 4. Make sure you have a realistic budget. Not everyone has endless amounts of money to spend, but no one is going to be able to make a wedding cake for 100 people for $100. Do some research, figure out what most people are charging and then decide on a price range you are comfortable with. No matter what your budget, don’t be afraid to ask bakers what they can do for you. 5. Sign a contract. When you have decided to book your cake with a certain vendor, make sure that they provide you with a contract outlining all of the details of your order for you to sign. You wouldn’t believe the number of emails I get for last minute cakes during the summer because someone’s baker backed out on them at the last minute. It’s hard to please everyone, especially family! What do you advise for choosing cake flavours? Your wedding day is all about you, so choose a flavour that you love. I sometimes have couples that have more than one flavour to try and have an option for everyone. The only problem I see with this is that you often need to order more cake. If there are two flavours available, some people will inevitably want to try both. Ultimately, I think that most people love cake and will gladly eat whatever is served to them; whether you choose chocolate, vanilla, lemon or even red velvet. What are the trends for the upcoming season? This year has been a year of muted tones, ivories, champagne and vintage inspired hues. While there is something classic about these colour palettes, I think that couples are going to start mixing lighter tones with brighter colours next year. I already have quite a few weddings booked for the 2013 season, all of which are incorporating white or cream with colours such as sea foam green, coral and even orange. I think these colours will work well with bold, geometric patterns and oversized sugar floral as well. I also think that the ombre trend will continue well into next summer. Interiors, done from outside the box Box Interior Design on being the go-to firm for the Glowbal Group, and their long-awaited Arthur Erickson project By Kelsey Klassen
W
hen you walk into a Vancouver restaurant or business and instantly want to stay a while, you might be the answer to Box Interior Design’s most important question: Who is this space for? The award-winning Vancouver interior design firm behind Black + Blue, Coast, Yaletown Brewing Company and MJ Jewelers asks many questions before they transform a space into an inviting oasis of function and form. Much like how a writer creates a backstory for a character, Box Interiors sketches a future customer, using their 20-plus years of experience to pinpoint what the guests will love, what they distinctly won’t like, what will inspire them to return and what they might tell their friends. But good interior design does more than get the bloggers buzzing, it can also increase returns. Cynthia Penner, principal at Box Interior Design, says the relationship between a successful business and thoughtful design is twofold. First, shabby is not chic. A space should honour a guest with an investment in the experience and attention to detail. People buy with their hearts, says Penner, and if the environment supports the “theatre of the purchasing event”, loyalty always follows. But that giant salt meat locker in the centre of Black + Blue (that bathes diners in the soft pink light of backlit Himalayan salt bricks and curing meat) isn’t just there to start conversation and make your mouth water. It has to improve work flow and efficiency while creating atmosphere. That’s why any cut of meat you order at Black + Blue has actually been taken from that gorgeous glowing monolith. Budget and deadlines frame the concept rather than restrict it. Working within exceedingly short time frames — they had one week to complete construction on the Gallery Café (“Our first and fastest job!”) — Penner credits their team of suppliers
and tradespeople for bringing their visions to life, and helping to forge longstanding relationships, such as with the café’s Murray Jamieson, or Emad Yacoub of the Glowbal Group. And, much like any good writer, even with the tiniest window these designers try to include at least one hook. “Our approach is that if you have a rationale for every decision, the results will hold up over time,” explains Penner, who, along with her partner Jay Brooks, just accepted Retail Excellence and Best in Show for MJ Jewelers and Food and Beverage Excellence for Black + Blue at the 2012 Interior Design Institute of BC awards. “But you are only allowed a ‘because it’s cool’ once per project,” she adds with a smile. Penner and Brooks met in the interior design program in the University of Manitoba. Brooks had already earned his bachelor of fine arts from UVic and Penner was fresh off a year in Sweden. The BC residents (Brooks is from Vancouver, Penner grew up near Kelowna) fell in love and moved to Toronto to pursue their design careers. After stints at Yabu Pushelberg and Cecconi Simone respectively, they returned to BC for a holiday and ended up staying — for the past 17 years. In 2002, they started the business together, landing that Vancouver Art Gallery café contract and confirming that couples can indeed do great work together. “We were a little concerned about working together. There are few successful stories and many, many divorces! But it has been terrific.” Penner jokes that every designer is a crow at heart, turning their heads to the shiny things, but she and Brooks each have their specialty. She’s a textile lover; Brooks is all about furniture. Once a year they go to New York to lust over mid 20thcentury Italian furniture and lighting. Their own home is simple, with clean whites and greys accented by those ‘life story’ pieces that seem to find you and follow you along the way. Still, they live by a strict ‘one thing in, one thing out’ rule. But are there any rules when it comes to designing a space that is timeless? Only one. Choose the best designer for the job. “Vancouver is a market still learning the value of quality interior design. We are competing less with other firms, than competing against a DIY perspective that is completely bottom-line driven, because they do not really understand all a qualified designer can do for them. Many people still do not know the difference between an architect, a professional interior designer and a decorator, and who would be appropriate for their project.” So the husband and wife team who still use pencils and paper instead of AutoCAD, and hire their designers based largely on the depth of their curiosity, look to another year of stunning spaces. Watch for a “sexy restaurant lounge” in Yaletown with Mark James and Fraser Boyer and a new look

And perhaps most exciting for lovers of iconic Vancouver architecture, they are currently working on the highly anticipated Arthur Erickson tower, a twisting 63-storey structure at 1151 W. Georgia that will be transformed into a luxury hotel and residence by 2015, and is loosely rumoured to be affiliated with the Trump organization. “Big or small, it is so amazing to have [clients] come to us a year or two after working together on a project and offer us the opportunity to work with them again as they grow. To be able to listen to the dreams and visions of our clients and then work to give them more than they imagined is tremendously satisfying.” BoxInteriorDesign.com

kua Schatz and Brendon Purdy found a Dunbar home they can really call their own. They built most of it themselves. Their bright, urban cottage with a polished wooden frame and high ceilings stands next to Purdy’s parents’ house. In fact, it’s in their backyard. It has a loft on top of the main floor, wide windows, a one-car garage, and 500 square feet of living space. “It’s a small space but, for us, that’s a benefit,” says Schatz. “We think more about what we bring in, we spend more time outside.” Building a laneway house offered the young couple the opportunity to live in the city. The whole structure cost $280,000 to build. They tend a garden and visit their parents by walking across a short

pathway from their kitchen door. They bike to work. Schatz and her partner — Purdy — moved to Vancouver a few years ago and were looking for a place of their own. They wanted to avoid a long commute to work but real estate prices in Vancouver prevented the young couple from considering property in the city. Thus, the idea of a laneway house on their parents’ lot sparked their imagination. Schatz and Purdy chose a local company called Smallworks, specializing in laneway houses, to help them design and build their home. Company founder, Jake Fry, drew inspiration from his travels outside of North America, where he says he was charmed by small houses and creative uses of space. “I’ve always contended that when you have something small, your standard of living goes up,” says Fry. “If you have something that meets your needs but doesn’t consume all of your resources, it’s a way to step back and enjoy things more.” In 2009, as a response to exorbitant housing prices and pressure to densify residential areas, Vancouver city council approved a bylaw that rezoned 94 per cent of the city and allowed for the construction of laneway houses. Over 500 laneway homes have been built in Vancouver in total, according to a city hall report. Fry says laneway houses will allow more young people to move back into the city. “And that’s positive for the neighbourhoods because that’s what keeps a city strong.” Despite the benefits, laneway housing has faced some resistance from Vancouver homeowners. “Some people think that it’s changing the face of the neighbourhood and they want to keep things the same,” says Schatz, who is on the Dunbar Residents’ Association. Others have articulated the concern that residents cannot control the pace of change in their neighbourhoods. Schatz and Purdy welcomed a baby boy into their lives three weeks ago, born in the house that the young couple designed themselves. “We got to put our stamp on it and we designed it well,” says Schatz. “And we have our parents with us. They help us and we help them.” She maintains a blog, BuildSmall.Blogspot.ca, about her experience with laneway housing.

No better time to explore Okanagan winery restaurants OnThePlate

F
rom Keremeos to Kelowna, BC’s wine grapes are being harvested and pressed as you read. It’s been a fantastic year for grape growing. The late blast of rain-free heat made up for a dreary wet June, and though winery owners and vignerons are often a superstitious lot and wary of jinxing any glad tides, their smiles of late betray their excitement and confidence concerning the vintage. Over the past couple of weeks I’ve seen a lot of the whites come in and had the good fortune to taste their juices during their first week(s) playing with yeast. The reds are starting to trickle in, too. The air of intense activity and the (to me) delicious smell of primary fermentation will be hanging low over the Okanagan over the next few weeks. There are six winery restaurants that I think are absolute must visits. Until I’m shown otherwise, the best among them is — in my opinion — still the stunning, open-air “Terrace” restaurant at Mission Hill Family Estate where chef Matthew Batey continues his mastery in an unparalleled location, but since I reviewed it over the summer and it has already shuttered for the winter (not to reopen until May 11), we’ll leave it alone for the purposes of this article. And since The Patio at Naramata’s Lake Breeze has also closed for the year (not to reopen until May 1), we’ll shelve it for the time being, too. That leaves us with four others in the same heavyweight class. The first among these is Miradoro, cliffhanging next to Tinhorn Creek just to the south of Oliver. I mentioned it last week in my profile of its chef, the Gold Medal Plates-bound Jeff Van Geest. He was well known in Vancouver for his locavore dedication at his first restaurant, Aurora Bistro, but he’s become a master of the Mediterranean milieu at Miradoro. Autumn hits include a charred flank steak with harissa, arugula, and spiced potato smash and a kuri squash agnolotti with walnut and sage brown butter. They do great turns with pizzas, too. Open until New Year’s Eve (reopens March 1). Terrafina is literally next door, attached to Hester Creek. It’s a cozy 45-seater with (again) a Mediterranean theme; warmed by a Tuscan farmhouse aesthetic and a pizza oven that produces some very good pies indeed. I had a memorable one a few days ago, a “bianca” that came loaded with well seasoned, wafer-thin potatoes topped with peppered rocket and smears of an aioli flavoured with asiago and artichoke. Open until Jan. 2 (reopens March 15). Nearby is the stunning, high-ceilinged perch of the Sonora Room overlooking some 140 acres of

Charred flank steak with harissa, arugula, pickled onion and spiced potato smash is a hot menu item at Miradoro Restaurant in the southern Okanagan. Andrew Morrison photo vineyards at Burrowing Owl Estate Winery (arguably one of the prettiest winery locations in the valley, right up there with Mission Hill). My dinner here last week was superb (the zeal of young chef Chris Van Hooydonk is infectious). The best of the lot were slices of vanilla cured wild salmon licked by a creme fraiche faintly whispering of fennel pollen and served with brioche croutons and gently dressed baby greens. Open until Dec. 17 (reopens Feb. 14). Further to the north (just down the slope of Mt. Boucherie from Mission Hill) is the veteran Quail’s Gate winery, where they’ve been growing Marechal Foch since 1969. Chef Roger Sleiman cooks year round at the adjoining Old Vines Restaurant. His style is French but his food is nevertheless anchored squarely in the immediate surrounds. He makes a mean risotto with tarragon and spot prawns from False Creek’s “Organic Ocean” and a better quail’s egg beef tartare than I’ve had anywhere else. The soy marinated sablefish is like a slice of cake, and I’d happily suck up the smoked paprika-scented pan juices from his Cornish game hen with a straw. The strong sense of history and homage to the terroir is amplified by expert service.

16 tasters review Argentinian wines CityCellar
By Kurtis Kolt
E
very week in this column I share wines I hope you’ll like. Of course, there’s the odd misfire which leads me to get a second or third opinion. Recently, I had 12 Argentinian wines to assess while trying to come up with the next theme in my ongoing series of East Van Wine Academy events at the Waldorf Hotel. I combined all of these elements, resulting in the concept of crowd-sourced wine reviews, having the 16 attendees of this week’s event write their thoughts on 12 Argentinian wines following a short seminar, casual sips and discussion on each. All proceeds from the event went to a local charity, the BC Hospitality Foundation. The following are the results of our efforts, the collaborative notes and opinions of 16 various palates. Santa Ana Torrontes Reserva 2011 | Mendoza | +814996 | $14.99 A nice “summery dry wine” “perfect for the patio” with “pineapple,” “orange blossom” and “citrusy flavours.” Like “lemon meringue pie.” “A good seafood wine.” Crios Torrontes 2011 | Cafayate, Salta | +769125 | $15.99 “Tropical fruit” like “guava” and “papaya” with “butterscotch.” A wine version of a “Piña Colada” that “would go well with spot prawns.”

Free Will Astrology By Rob Brezsny • Week of October 18
ARIES (March 21-April 19): When Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro laid waste to Peru in 1532, his soldiers found green stones on the land. Were they emeralds? A priest who was travelling with them gave them bad advice. He said that the way to determine whether they were merely colored glass or else precious gems was to test their hardness by pounding them with hammers. In this manner, many actual emeralds were shattered into fragments. Learn from this mistake, Aries. Make sure you recognize treasures for what they are. And don’t force them to submit to unwise tests that misconstrue their true nature. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Someone at Reddit.com posted a question to the community: Could anyone help him recreate the aroma of the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disneyland? He said he loved that smell. It was a blend of damp earth, rotting wood, and gunpowder. It had musty overtones, a hint of chlorine, and a tantalizing freshness. If only he could get that fragrance to permeate his house, he testified, he’d always be able to work at peak efficiency. You might want to follow his lead, Taurus. It’s a good time to identify and gather all the ingredients you would need to make sure your environment inspires you to the max. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): If you asked me to be your personal advisor, I would prescribe supplements and herbs to build up your immune system. I’d insist that you eat nothing but healthy food and get at least eight hours of sleep every night. I’d suggest that you meditate daily on images that symbolize your most inspiring desires. For fun, I might even advise you to do a ritual in which you create a big circle around yourself using violet yarn and then do a series of playful acts to pump up your freedom, like dancing as wildly as you know how and chanting “love is my creator.” Finally, Gemini, if you sought my counsel, I’d urge you to use your exuberant imagination in concert with your disciplined intellect as you design a long-term plan to charge up your well-being. CANCER (June 21-July 22): “Dear Free Will Astrologer: I found your website by accident today and was drawn in fast and hard. No matter what I did I could not escape and get back to my work. Your messages were too interesting for my own good. You gave me too many answers to questions I’ve had for too many years. I felt like I was being cured of problems I didn’t even know I had. Many hours went by until finally I was able to pull myself out of the vortex. How did this happen? — Freaked Out.” Dear Freaked: I was born under the sign of Cancer the Crab, and it so happens that the people of my tribe are currently emanating an intriguing and inscrutable aura. We’re at the peak of our ability to attract and seduce. Many of us are using our power benevolently, but our mysterious mojo could still be a bit unsettling.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): The past is headed your way bearing gifts, Leo. I recommend that you make yourself available for its blessings, which may be delivered to you in unexpected ways. For example: The spirit of a dead loved one could impart an enigmatic but useful tip in the middle of the night. An abandoned dream you assumed was gone forever might return from limbo to grant you a wish. A favor you did for someone long ago could finally be repaid. Are you ready to let history reward you in its own unique style? VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Just for you, it is Shark Week. During this dicey holiday, you should be wary of all sharks, especially the kind that look like human beings. Don’t get in their way, and don’t underestimate them. On the other hand, I’m not opposed to you getting to know some sharks better. They could teach you some valuable lessons on how to get what you want. Not that you would ever be as cold-blooded and predatory as they are, of course. But it might be energizing to your ambitions if you add just a bit of shark-like thinking to your repertoire. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Visualize yourself heading out on a high adventure with interesting people — but all the while being distracted by the memory of a trivial insult you experienced earlier that day. Picture yourself getting intimate with a lover who inspires you to lose your self-consciousness — up until the point when you decide to interrupt your fun by answering a phone call from some random person. Imagine toning yourself down and holding yourself back because of misplaced politeness or unnecessary guilt or delusional fear — even though you’re feeling a rushing instinct to surge and soar and overflow. Finally, Libra, understand that in getting you to envision these parodies of your current inclinations, I’m hoping to shock you into making sure that nothing like them happens. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Sometime soon you may dream of being
naked at a public event like a class at school or a committee meeting. I think this would be an excellent omen, so I hope it comes to pass. It would signify that you’re ready to shed the disguises that have been making it problematical for you to reinvent yourself. Who is the New You? Stripping down to the bare essentials in your dreams will help you see raw truths about your waking life. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): As you cross the great water in search of the unknown treasure, navigate by the light of the clouds. That’s your dreamy oracle, Sagittarius. What does it mean? Well, the work you do to figure it out is essential to activating its potential, so I don’t want to give away too much. But here are three further hints to inspire you on your quest. 1. Be willing to go a long way to find a secret you don’t even know you’re looking for. 2. Consider the possibility of cultivating faith in a goal that you don’t quite yet grasp in its entirety. 3. Rely on shadows and reflections to give you accurate information you can’t get directly from the thing that’s casting shadows and being reflected. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Everyone has some kind of power. What’s yours? In the coming days, I suspect there will be some crisis and opportunity regarding how you use it. Maybe you will be invited to assume more authority or exercise greater influence. Maybe your ability to wield your particular clout will be questioned or doubted, and you will be challenged to either stand up and express it with more integrity and purpose, or else relinquish it. For best results, take a moment right now to visualize the precise power you would love to command. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): “Dear Rob: I really enjoy reading your horoscopes. You feel like a friend I’ve never met. When I try to picture what you’re like, I keep getting a vision of you as being fat, short, and bald with a strawberry
blond moustache. Am I right? — Curious Aquarius.” Dear Curious: It’s great that you’ve decided to do a reality check. This is an excellent time for all you Aquarians to see if what you imagine to be true is a match for the world as it actually is. To answer your question, I am in fact tall and thin, don’t wear a moustache, and have an abundance of long silver hair. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): I’ve got just the right message to set the tone for you in the weeks ahead. It comes from writer H.P. Lovecraft, and captures the essence of your astrological omens. “Pleasure to me is wonder,” said Lovecraft. “It’s
the unexplored, the unexpected, the thing that is hidden and the changeless thing that lurks behind superficial mutability. To trace the remote in the immediate; the eternal in the ephemeral; the past in the present; the infinite in the finite; these are to me the springs of delight and beauty.” Now get out there, Pisces, and gather up all the mysterious marvels you have coming to you -- all the bracing encounters with uncanny grace. Homework: Tell a story about the time Spirit reached down and altered your course in one tricky, manic swoop. Freewillastrology.com

Canada’s newest apple has a name Formerly known only as SPA493, an apple created over the past 25 years in BC’s Okanagan region has been named Salish, for the Canadian Interior language. Resulting from a cross-pollination between Splendour and Gala varieties, the new apple has a thin, reddish-yellow skin; crispy flesh and a tangy, juicy flavour. The Salish is medium-sized, non-genetically modified and is being grown in limited quantities by 15 orchardists in the Okanagan Valley. Look for it in Vancouver at Choices, Four Seasons Farms, Marketplace IGA, The #1 Orchard, Urban Fare and Whole Foods this Fall. And check out the ‘Salish Salad’ recipe online at WEVancouver.com/food/

oap star Michael Muhney almost skipped out on his audition for The Young & the Restless (Y&R). “I U-turned my car on the way to CBS and started heading home,” said Muhney, who’d previously appeared as Sheriff Don Lamb on the cult classic television series Veronica Mars. The year was 2009, and the then 34-year-old Illinois native was up for the role of Adam, the cerebral and conflicted son of billionaire Victor Newman, on CBS’s toprated soap. For Muhney, who’d starred in numerous television pilots (including NCIS) and independent films, the prospect of soap opera employment was less than appealing. But Muhney swung his car around and showed up for his meeting without missing a beat. Luckily for soap fans, the character of Adam was complex enough to pique the interest of the card-carrying Mensa member. “I remember after I left this 90-minute session over at CBS, I was driving my car off the lot, and I think I might have actually said this out loud … ‘I can’t believe I’m seriously considering accepting an offer to star on a soap opera’,” said Muhney during a recent phone interview from his California home. Since that long-ago U-turn, Muhney — who will appear at this weekend’s West Coast Women’s Show to chat and field questions about Adam, Y&R, and soaps in general —has emerged as one of daytime drama’s biggest stars and fiercest defenders. “I think [Muhney]’s made us all a little bit more optimistic about the future, and I think he raises the acting bar on daytime,” said Nelson Branco, a veteran soap journalist and editor of Soap Opera Uncensored. “He’s really become an advocate for the genre, and he’s seriously protective of it, and it really could have gone the other way.” The American soap opera genre dates back to the pre-television age, when soap manufacturers sponsored highly dramatic daily radio serials aimed at housewives. With the advent of television, the popularity of soaps skyrocketed. But as women ventured into the workforce and the television dial expanded, soap opera ratings began to erode. In the late 1990s, 13 soaps populated the daytime

Soap star Michael Muhney. schedule. Today, only four remain: Days of our Lives (NBC), General Hospital (ABC), Bold and the Beautiful (CBS), and Y&R (CBS). But according to Muhney, the genre is in a healthier place than it’s been in years. “One of the things soaps needed to [do to] survive was they needed to be scaled down to the final three, four, five soaps, because, in my opinion, the daytime market and the primetime market, when it gets oversaturated with any one product, that product starts to get killed off because it’s so abundant that it loses its value,” he says “[Those] that have stayed I think are given a much better opportunity to stay around for a very, very long time just due to the fact that now they’re their own little niche.” To ensure long-term success, Muhney suggests daytime look no further than primetime. Between PVRs and web streaming, Muhney contends that as much as half of Y&R’s audience watches their daytime drama in primetime hours. “I think the onus is on daytime to start realizing that they’re no longer being watched during the daytime, that they’re a primetime show and they should write up to an intelligent audience and the actors should play up to the scale and skills of primetime,” said Muhney, who noted that, unlike primetime dramas that receive more than a week to film one episode, Y&R films six episodes in every four-day work week. Muhney will grace the stage at the 2012 West Coast Women’s Show at 1pm on Oct. 20. The event runs Oct. 19, 20 and 21 at the TRADEX in Abbotsford. Celebrate chocolate with a master Chocolate Week allows us to experience chocolate the way chef Thierry does: all the time by Jenn Chic
C
hocolate should be eaten every day. Just ask chef Thierry Busset, owner of Thierry — Chocolaterie, Patisserie, Café and perhaps one of North America’s finest pastry chefs. Vancouver is lucky to have him settled in our fair city, far from his hometown in France, snuggled into his classy and cozy cafe on Alberni Street, celebrating his love of chocolate everyday next week. Starting on Monday, Oct. 22 until Oct. 28, Busset is excited to present Chocolate Week. Each day he will be releasing a new and exciting chocolate treat. It begins on Monday with a new product launch of real Tahitian vanilla chocolate — a decadent white chocolate and Tahitian vanilla ganache enrobed in 70 per cent chocolate, bitter enough to balance the creamy filling.
“You wouldn’t want to eat too many of these — just two or three and stop,” advises Busset. “Then the next day, have two or three more. And the next day....” It’s hard to argue with an expert. He compares chocolate to tea, coffee or wine, where the region it comes from and the farmer who grew it contribute so much to the subtleties of flavour of each type of chocolate. “I like chocolate early in the morning with coffee, when my palette is very clean,” he says. “Or in the afternoon for a little lift. Actually, I like chocolate anytime.” Chocolate and Bubbles, an evening event on Tuesday, is an opportunity to get to know the chef. He’ll be offering the entire week’s special
chocolate creations to guests with his favourite pairing of bubbles and red wine. Beware, his French charm could be contagious. “I believe men should buy chocolate and flowers for their women everyday. They shouldn’t wait until Valentine’s Day,” he laughs. “I think my wife would agree.” The rest of the week the celebration of chocolate continues with 80 per cent chocolate specialties, dipped macarons, liquid chocolate and seasonal treats. If you’re still concerned about indulging, Chocolate Week will be donating a percentage of the chocolate sales for the week to St. Paul’s Hospital. 1059 Alberni | ThierryChocolates.com

Movie Reviews The Paperboy undone by melodrama THE PAPERBOY
Directed by Lee Daniels Starring Matthew McConaughey, Nicole Kidman Film noir meets farce in Lee Daniels’ (Precious) dirty southern drama The Paperboy. 1960’s south Florida is the backdrop as investigative reporter Ward Jansen, (McConaughey) his partner Yardley (David Oyelowo), younger brother Jack (Zac Efron) and sultry Charlotte Bless (Kidman) track down the sensational story of their careers. The group attempts to prove Hillary Van Wetter (John Cusack) was framed for the murder of a corrupt local sheriff. The film is based on the bestseller by Pete Dexter and competed for the Palme d’Or at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. Initially, the movie opens effectively with plenty of snappy dialogue and solid acting. Kidman oozes southern sexuality as a ‘death-row groupie’,
Efron sheds his former High School Musical innocence and is able to flex some dramatic muscle while McConaughey exudes coolness with just enough mystery under the surface. Credit should also be given to the creepy and sadistic Cusack who gives a small but memorable performance and singer Macy Gray as the family maid and film’s narrator. Stylistically, The Paperboy conveys some effective imagery; actors appear with little to no makeup and the Florida humidity is always present on their sweaty brows and torsos. Things soon fall apart around the movie’s bloated mid-section when the narrative veers into melodrama, too Thor much even for a noir, and eventually descends Diakow to sheer absurdity. Inevitably, what begins as an old fashioned mystery becomes a muddled, crowded mess of backwater swamps and dirty sex, leaving behind any real connection to the film’s promising start.

Affleck delivers with riveting historical film ARGO
Starring Ben Affleck, Bryan Cranston Directed by Ben Affleck With his acting career locked in a nosedive in 2007, Ben Affleck ignored the public’s sniggering, stepped behind the camera, and delivered Gone Baby Gone, a gritty, enthralling Dennis Lehane adaptation. After maintaining a holding pattern with The Town, Affleck takes a significant step forward with the “based on a true story” Argo, revealing that he’s now capable of transforming a by-the-numbers screenplay into superior entertainment. With anti-American sentiment festering during the 1979 Iranian Revolution, protestors storm the U.S. embassy in Tehran. Affleck stages the chaos expertly, escalating the mayhem until six employees are forced to take shelter in the Canadian ambassador’s home. Cut to Washington, where CIA agents Tony Mendez (Affleck) and Jack O’Donnell (Bryan Cranston) act on
the “best bad idea” they have: Mendez will pose as a Canadian producer looking to make a Star Wars knock-off in Iran. He’ll then pass the diplomats off as his crew and walk them right through airport security. While Mendez’s trip to Los Angeles to meet with an unscrupulous producer (Alan Arkin) and makeup wiz (John Goodman) allows for some obvious-yet-effective jabs at Hollywood, the extended sequence relaxes the stranglehold the film has on its audience. Consequently, there’s significant dramatic ground to make up once Mendez touches down in Tehran. Fortunately, Affleck rarely takes his foot off the accelerator in the final hour. Frenzied camerawork and frantic pacing conspire to send us careening to an unspeakably tense climax. And in those final moments, we completely forget that this story’s resolution has already been recorded in the history books. Indeed, seven lives seem to be hanging in the balance and we’re left hanging on tenterhooks. — Curtis Woloschuk

Polley reestablishes herself with Stories STORIES WE TELL
Directed by Sarah Polley While making the rounds with her sophomore film – the divorce drama Take This Waltz – writer-director Sarah Polley went to great lengths to assure everyone that it wasn’t just a thinly veiled account of her own marriage’s dissolution. Conversely, her first foray into the documentary medium sees Polley wholeheartedly embracing autobiographical filmmaking by diving headlong into her family’s tangled history.
For those who chided Polley’s overwriting on Take This Waltz, alarm bells will be triggered in the early going here. Stylishly assembled (Mike Munn’s editing is impeccable) while simultaneously deconstructing the “talking head”-style documentary, Stories initially seems a little too pleased with its own charm and cleverness. However, once Polley has introduced her charismatic subjects — her father (who also serves as narrator), siblings and family friends —the film grows aesthetically assured (home movies blend seamlessly with recreated footage), intellectually rigorous, and emotionally resonant. Ostensibly, the film is Polley’s attempt to learn the truth

about her late mother (who succumbed to cancer when the director was 11), her parents’ marriage, and her biological father’s identity. As her interviewees alternately corroborate and contradict each other’s version of events, their situation serves as a springboard for viewers to reexamine the tidy narratives we’ve shoehorned our own complex lives into. How much licence do we take with the facts? Can anyone rightfully claim sole ownership of a story that involves generations of individuals? Amidst all of these provocative questions concerning the nature of truth, there is one certainty that emerges: Polley has reestablished herself as one of Canada’s most intriguing filmmakers. — Curtis Woloschuk

A 9 foot long sofa with a pull-out chaise and shelving above the chaise is standard, but there are many ways to customize: the shelf above the sofa becomes the foot of the bed when pulled down [1, 2]. Because the shelf remains parallel to the floor as it moves, everything can remain on the shelf. The sofa seat also lifts up for storage [3]. Available in over 40 finishes, the lacquers are waterbased and the particle board is E-0 classification (meaning basically no formaldehyde emission). ResourceFurniture.com | 332 Water
