Fishing 2X14 Corner with Don Daniels email: dond@campbellrivermirror.com The ice cream cones and coffee are packed away for another season but fishing continues on Discovery Pier in Campbell River. Local anglers will fish year around and some nice Coho are being caught at the moment. This time of year it’s bring your own fishing rod and lures. The recent rain has brought up the river levels and Coho Hudson - King of the Pier are on the move. The nature 42.5 lb.Tyee path between Salmon Point and the Oyster River is a casual walk to view anglers fishing the shoreline. The best fishing from shore was on Thursday, October 4th when anglers were hooking into Coho using spinning gear. I saw the salmon putting on their aerial display in the kelp beds and the fly fishermen were busy throwing out blue and green bodied flies. I fished the mouth of the Oyster River and was accompanied by anglers fishing from boats and also wading out to the fishing zone. Many anglers are using Buzz Bombs green or blue and are casting from shore or from a boat anchored near the kelp. Last week I joined a number of anglers who were camped at Salmon Point and they ventured out fishing in late afternoon. I call it fun on the fly when small bottom fish grab a small buck tail. lakes can also fish well this time of year using leech Local lak patterned flies or a Muddler Minnow. M This will be my ssecond year attending the Browns Bay CCharity Chum Derby, Needle Fish Fly Pattern October 26th to the 28th to watch anglers fishing for prize money. The entertainment starts on Friday and the prizes awarded Sunday afternoon. Last year’s derby, the ladies were in the spotlight with Stacey Noren and Michelle Crozier winning the top prize money of $500 and $250.

Support for child care sought Erin Haluschak Black Press COMOX — It’s a combination of child care and public education, and Charlene Gray hopes Comox council will support the more than 900 early childhood educators of B.C. for a public system of integrated early care and learning. Gray, who presented council with the plan at last week’s committee of the whole meeting, explained the idea came about between the Early Childhood Educators of B.C. (ECEBC) and the Coalition of Childcare Advocates of B.C. The “made-inB.C” solution to the childcare crisis

honours children’s and families’ right to quality early care and leaning, Gray noted, who hopes to garner from council a motion to endorse the plan or letter of support. “We’re a very fragmented sector. We have private, not-for-profit, big box, all sorts of family childcare, and we really don’t have much regulation in the way that we’re governed. We’re hoping we can integrate into the Ministry of Education (MOE) so that we can be universally accessible as public education is,” she added. The draft plan began in 2010, and has been presented to communities and businesses across the

“Early care and learning from birth to five costs more than it does to send your child to university,” she said. Gray noted the plan integrates the strength of both the public and private sectors. “In public eduction, it’s universal, you have rights to education. There’s public funding, it’s democratically controlled, it’s supported by the public and there’s the infrastructure to deliver,” she said. “Quality child care has care at the core. “We have respect for children’s rights, we have play-based holistic programs, and we have intimate relationships with families and we value the child the first and foremost a member of

province. Gray said while the MOE implements universal, publicly funded full-school-day kindergarten for fiveyear-olds, fees are too high for parents, wages are too low for staff and quality regulated spaces are too few for child care. “B.C. has an ongoing child care crisis. Certainly in every community it’s different,” she noted. “Here in the Comox Valley, certainly affordability is an issue.” Gray explained child care is the second-highest family expense next to mortgages. If a family has more than one child, then it often exceeds the mortgage payment.

the family and then the community.” Gray explained that all of the child care centres that are already existing would contract with the MOE to provide the service, and they would then be funded to ensure unique programs could be maintained. “Parents would still have a right to chose where their child goes, to chose what kind of program their child wants ... everyone has a unique culture in their centre, and we’re not looking to get rid of that.” Part of the plan would cap fees at $10 day, $7 for part time, and free for families with an income under $40,000. Currently Gray said fees range anywhere from $20 to $40 a day. The plan also acknowledges increasing the salary of educators to $25/hour with benefits, as well as allowing all children into programming, including those with special needs. Gray noted the plan would seek an additional public investment of $1.5 billion annually.

Young runners’ virtual run around the Island J.R. Rardon Black Press

volunteers wanted to do something a little different at Sunset. “We wanted it to be more of a club than a team,” said Cyndy Grant, co-organizer for the running club. “We wanted it to be a real inclusive opportunity for kids to improve their fitness and enjoy running and different kinds of conditioning work.” The cross country race is open only to runners in Grade 2 and older, but the Sunset club was opened up to Grade 1 students, as well. For incentive, organizers enter each participant’s name into a prize draw, and prizes of small toys are awarded following each noon-hour run. To enhance camaraderie and the club atmosphere, a large map of Vancouver Island was placed on a wall of

PORT McNEILL— The North Vancouver Island towns of Port McNeill and Sointula face each other across a narrow strip of Broughton Strait, and the normal method of travel between them is a short ferry ride. But a group of Sunset Elementary School students is making the trip by way of Victoria. The Sunset Running Club was started in September to prepare young runners for the upcoming districtwide cross country run in Sointula Oct. 24. Each fall, students at School District 85 and First Nations elementary schools hold practices and/ or tryouts for the race on Malcolm Island. But a group of parent

the school, and the students’ combined, cumulative kilometres run each day are tracked on the map. Without ever leaving Port McNeill, the group reached Victoria Oct. 6 and is now on the return trip north. The South Island terminus was reached by Grant’s sons, Joey and William, during a personal weekend run. “The kids are following the map really closely,” Cyndy said. “William came home from school Friday (Oct. 5) and said, ‘Mom, we’re four kilometres from Victoria! Can I go out and run four kilometres?” Club members and their coaches also took part in the recent CIBC Run for the Cure. The Sunset Running Club meets

at noon hour each Monday, Wednesday and Friday. They run under the guidance of parents Doug and Cyndy Grant, Kim Dutcyvich, Denise Blid and Megan Hanacek,

as well as volunteer Larry Burroughs, the recently retired school principal who founded and directed the cross country run for years. “It’s really good to have him involved,” said Grant. “Larry’s going to help out with

the race again this year. The students started out with some track runs, then graduated to longer loops around town, up to 2.5 kilometres. There have been as many as 70 students at a session,

though the numbers have dwindled as some youngsters have drifted away or switched to indoor soccer. That’s not entirely a bad thing, said Grant. The team for the cross country run in Sointula will be chosen based on a combination of performance and participation, and the smaller group indicates to the coaches who is most committed. And she isn’t concerned they’ll run out of time to complete the “return trip” from Victoria. “After all,” Grant said, “They’re running longer distances now.”

The recent rise of interest in vampires, particularly among teens, has brought to the fore the practice of biting another person to draw blood, says Sheril Kirshenbaum in “The Science of Kissing.” “Just don’t do it,” she cautions. killed by each. You know C x R = 1,111. There are only four ways to factor 1,111: 1 x 1,111; 11 x 101; 101 x 11; 1,111 x 1. So C must be 1, 11, 101 or 1,111. Since there were “several” cats, 1 can be eliminated. But if C is 101 or 1,111, then R = 11 or 1 respectively, meaning more cats than rats, so eliminate them as well. Therefore the number of cats must be 11, with each cat dispatching 101 rats (from “ScienceIllustrated. Com” magazine).
