TRANSPORTATION FUNDING

Stanhope supports rail Regional district chair says lifespan of roads would increase NEIL HORNER news@pqbnews.com

Joe Stanhope says regional districts should help fund the rehabilitation of the Vancouver Island Railway. The comments from the chair of the Regional District of Nanaimo came in light of a request from the Island Corridor Foundation for $3.2 million to get the rail line up and running again. “I think we should do it, he said. “Southern Rail is still hanging in there and they fixed up the rail transfer station on the other side, in Vancouver. They’re going to put in $70 million over the next 20 years, so if we can get over this hurdle, I think it’s worth it. The tab for RDN residents would work out to .43 cents per $100,000 of home value, about $1.50 a year from the average house for five years. Stanhope said there is more to think about than the cost of the upgrade. “Propane trucks are on the road and they’ve been one of the big backers all the way along, he said. “They want to transfer propane onto the rails. Look at the damage to the road. If you start hauling coal over the Alberni Highway, just think about the damage those big trucks will make. It’s a case of pay me now, or pay me later. “I think it’s worth it.

STARTING POINT Helping men change their approach Haven Society and SOS have teamed to introduce a new program in our region, one they say will help men change their approach to relationships. The program is called Men Choose Respect (MCR) in Parksville.” “Provided in a safe, confidential and accepting environment, men work to change their approach to relationships and to build on safety, caring, equality and respect,” the SOS said in a news release issued Monday afternoon. According to the release, the program provides individual and group counseling for men, who renew skills and abilities to negotiate conflict and difficulties without using anger or abusive strategies. “Many men describe using approaches in the past that they regret, and want to avoid strategies that are pushing their relationship further away,” the release continued. “Although difficult to talk about at first, men in the program say the program is positive and supportive and find they begin to think about their relationship differently. Men can contact the program by leaving a voice mail at 250-2483500 (option 3), or e-mail theresa@havensociety.com, talk with a counselor on the phone, and then make their own decision to attend. “We are happy to bring this service to our community, as a complement to some of our other groups and services,” said Renate Sutherland, the Executive Director of SOS. — NEWS Staff JOHN HARDING PHOTO

Fresh back from a week-long visit to Israel as past chair of the Canada/Israel Parliamentary group, Nanaimo-Alberni MP James Lunney said he sees Iran as a serious danger to peace in the region. “It’s a very, very serious threat,” he said, “and the world seems unable or unwilling to deal with it.” Lunney left for the Middle East on Sept. 29 to join a gathering of world parliamentarians organized by the Israel Allies Foundation. The meeting, he said, was called to discuss the challenges facing Israel, including resettlement of refugees and threats from Iran. Lunney said Canada has stood out in its stalwart support of Israel, noting the closing of the

Iranian embassy on Sept. 7 showed how seriously the Canadian government takes the Iranian situation. “There’s a number of reasons for this,” he said. “There’s Iran’s belligerence and persistence in pursuing a nuclear weapons program in spite of UN sanctions. Calling for the annihilation of a member state of the UN is just not on.” As well, he said there are no assurances the Iranians are willing to honour the terms of the convention to protect diplomats on their turf. The question, Lunney said, remains about how the world community will deal with the situation, likening it to what happened in Iraq in 1981. See INSTABILITY, page A6

YOUNG DRIVERS

Talk to your teen – RCMP High speed likely cause of Oct. 5 crash that sent two to hospital

Police have issued a plea to parents to have a serious talk with their driving-aged children about the need to keep safety in mind at all times when they’re on the road. The plea came after Oceanside RCMP responded to a single vehicle crash on Claymore Road in Qualicum Beach on Oct. 5. Corporal Jesse Foreman said the 17-year-old driver lost control of his 1990 Dodge Caravan on a corner, skidded out of control, hit the ditch and rolled his van. Both the driver and his 15-year-old female passenger suffered minor injuries and were transported to Nanaimo General Hospital. Foreman said evidence obtained at scene, along with witness information, indicated the driver was traveling at a high rate of speed prior to the roll-over and police are considering charges under the Motor Vehicle Act. “ICBC statistics clearly show that new drivers, 25 years and under, are far more likely to be involved in a collision,” Foreman said. “Parents, if your kids are new to driving or will be a passenger with a new driver, please have a discussion with them and ensure they are aware of the consequences of reckless driving.”

HALLOWEEN FIREWORKS

Dashwood big bangs on the move Safety cited as reason of move to bigger venue NEIL HORNER

news@pqbnews.com

One could say the annual Halloween extravaganza at the Dashwood firehall is a victim of its own success, but that’s not how Nick Acciavatti sees it. Rather, the Dashwood fire chief says he sees the need to move the event as the precursor to things getting even bigger, even better and — although safer — even scarier. The fire crews at Dashwood have been putting on a haunted forest, bonfire and fireworks display at the fire hall at Hobbs Road and Highway 19A for the past 25 years and they’ve put their hearts and souls into it. Their efforts have paid off in a big way, with attendance growing steadily every season. “When I started, we would get excited if we got more than 300 people,” he said. “For the last few years though, we’ve had 1,000 plus.” That’s a problem, he said, because the fire hall lacks adequate parking to deal with that many visitors and people have been parking along the side of the highway, making for a serious safety concern. “It’s not safe,” he said. “It’s a family event and we want to make sure we aren’t putting people coming here at risk. We are a fire department in charge of people’s safety after all and we want to make sure we are looking after their safety.” Concerned that this year’s bash would be even bigger than ever, Acciavatti met with Elaine Peligren of the Corcan-Meadowood Residents Association and the Little Qualicum River Village residents group, which have been holding an almost identical event at a much larger venue on a property by the second Dashwood hall at 1800 Galvin Place, behind the Meadowood store. “We’re combining forces,” he said. “We said, you’re doing it, we’re doing it, so why not do it together?” Peligren agreed it was a good match. “I think we are going to get really well known, one of the premier places to check out,” she said. “We had about 200 people to our event last year and the word is really getting out. People are really excited.” This year’s event, she said, will be held at a much larger property and will be able to feature a larger haunted walk, which they plan to divide into two streams, one for adults and one for the children. The Dashwood hall usually spends about $3,000 for their fireworks display and the Corcan-Meadowood group also puts on a great show, so together they’ll be able to put on a fireworks that’s something to write home about.

Senseless acts at Storybook Group asks public to keep an eye on child-size village after spate of vandalism LISSA ALEXANDER

reporter@pqbnews.com

There has been a rash of vandalism at Qualicum Beach Elementary School’s Storybook Village, and the organization that looks after it is issuing a public plea. “I think if we come together as a community maybe we can stop this,” said director of Building Learning Together (BLT), Deborah Davenport. BLT is a coalition of community partners, schools, ministries and agencies that support early learning for children ages zero to six and their families, and Storybook Village is one of their projects. The child-size village, located at the

Flag-raising ceremony set for Oct. 26 NEIL HORNER

The Qualicum Beach Legion is gearing up in a big way to launch its annual poppy campaign, says Branch 76 spokesperson Joan Lane. The campaign will kick off with a flag-raising ceremony at the Legion on Friday, Oct. 26 at 9:30 a.m., where mayor Teunis Westbroek will say a few words and have the ceremonial first poppy pinned to his lapel before Legion members and their supporters fan out across the community to raise sorely needed funds to support veterans in the community.

Last year’s campaign raised $18,500 and organizers are hoping to do at least as well this year. The campaign, Lane said, runs for two weekends and will see members of both the air cadets, sea cadets and Navy League joining their veteran elders in the campaign. Overall, said Legion padre Brian Kirby, as many as 150 people will be looking for donations outside the liquor store, Quality Foods, Dolly’s Home Hardware, Deez Pub, the Frontiersman Pub in Coombs and other locations. Look for them on Oct. 26-27 and Nov. 2-3. Trays of poppies will also be placed at various locations throughout the community.

With a limited amount of resources the organization is barely able to keep up with the vandalism, she said, and are currently trying to get it prepared for the annual Spooktacular Event on Oct. 29, where kids come dressed up to the village to partake in Halloween activities. Davenport is asking that people keep an eye on the village. The doors to the houses should be closed and locked unless there’s an event, so please report any suspicious activity to the police. Davenport said the village had a successful summer season, with close to 2000 visits. It is now closed except for events.

elementary school, is complete with a fire hall, theatre, bank and grocery store, among other playhouses. The buildings are connected by little roadways with stop lights that children peddle through in mini cars. There is also an alphabet garden with vegetables and flowers. Davenport said recently the village has been victim to graffiti, broken lights and windows and general defacing. Many of the locks on the houses have been broken and there have even been people found sleeping in the buildings. “It just makes my heart cry,” said Davenport, citing all the people who donated their time to develop the village and help make it run.

Instability throughout the region CONTINUED FROM PAGE A3

“It was in the late 1970s that Israel was appealing to the world to pay attention to what Saddam was doing with his nuclear program and the world seemed occupied with other concerns, Lunney said. “In 1981 Israel took out those reactors. Lunney noted that during the First Iraq War a total of 39 Scud missiles landed in Israel and while they did limited damage, it would have been a very different story if even one of those missiles had been armed with a nuclear warhead. “So here we are again with Iran pursuing a nuclear program and threatening to destroy Israel, Lunney said. However, Lunney stressed that much care needs to be taken before any similar strike is carried out in Iran. “It’s a high risk venture, he said. “Just because there was success in the past, there’s no certainty it would be successful now. Look at what’s happening with Syria and Turkey, where we have a regional conflict with American troops moving into Jordan. There’s instability across the entire region and so any attack from either way has the potential to spread that instability. Lunney said Canada’s position has been to encourage other nations to take sanctions seriously, in order to put pressure on the Iranian regime. Although Iran has signed the nuclear non-proliferation treaty, Lunney noted that Iraq had also signed it, but had been working hard to get a nuclear weapon anyway. As well, he said Israel is a responsible member of the international community, something he said Iran is not. “The regime is unstable, he said. “Israel is a responsible democracy. Israel is not a belligerent state or expansionist state. It has its own chunk of land it is trying to protect been threatened throughout its existence and had to fight to survive.

Bury the hatchet

S

ome day, a political party will emerge that is focussed on the people and issues of British Columbia more than the upward mobility of its leaders — a party that makes news for policy reasons, not because of internal squabbling and the knives-in-the-back comments of dissidents, defectors and dimwits. Call us naive, sure. We prefer to call it optimistic. Clearly, the B.C. Conservatives are not that party we seek. And to be fair, we’re not sure there’s a political party out there that fits the harsh criteria we have presented. However, the BC Conservatives can have a real effect on how this province is governed. By bleeding even 10 per cent of the vote away from their fellow right-of-centre BC Liberals, they can sway some ridings and effectively launch the NDP into government. A visit to the BC Conservatives’ website reveals some sound policy, but nothing that couldn’t be written and followed by a member or MLA of the BC Liberals, provided the focus for more than a day wasn’t on personal political survival, polls and sound bytes. “The BC Conservative Party is one with a clear common sense vision for our province,” states the website. We would hope common sense would include unity amongst the ranks, an opportunity to present policy and vision with the back-room baloney left where it belongs, laundry aired somewhere other than the media. No such luck. Should we look past the leadership shenanigans and tout the policies? In a perfect world, perhaps we could do that, but today we do not live in a perfect world and, frankly, conspiracy theories and angry comments from defectors as they leave the door are much more colourful and attention-grabbing. We can be fallible and shallow too, we’re afraid. Unfortunately, the B.C. Conservatives cannot be ignored. If there was a left-of-centre party without any chance to govern that stole votes from the NDP, we would also be concerned. Like the federal Reform and Progressive Conservatives before them, it’s time for the B.C. Conservatives and the B.C. Liberals to bury the hatchet. The stakes are too high. Those who believe we need more than two parties, more than two clear choices on either side of the spectrum’s centre should consider this: The world’s only remaining superpower seems to enjoy real, issue-focussed debate and it features only two relevant political parties. - Editorial by John Harding

QUOTABLE:

Letters FERRY WAGE WOES One has to get very tired these days of watching and reading about B.C. Ferries’ troubles and the oft-repeated suggestions by anyone and everyone that do not come anywhere near to filling in the sinkhole. Isn’t everyone upset or even offended by service cuts and price increases? No one seems to want state the obvious, that the Corporation needs to address the other source (fuel cost being one) of its ills – high wages and generous benefits. Being as this B.C., organized labour is involved, and because the Corporation is a government entity, this kind of talk only raises the hackles of, and sends shivers through, those who are directly affected. Can management not address these factors head-on using, goodness help us, a realistic approach? First, address starting management salaries and benefits to better align with the private sector. Second, in any wage negotiations, establish realistic beginning wages and benefits that properly reflect one starting in a position. In both situations, one may (or will) move up with experience and time, not just handed generous earnings and perks that frankly businesses, big or small, cannot afford to give and still compete. In addition, the business world has been forced to change pensions to defined contribution plans. In today’s economic reality, defined benefits (parties may or may not contribute, but the retirement benefit is pre-established) are no longer sustainable. If this is a B.C.

“It’ just made my heart cry.” DEB DAVENPORT, see story page 21

ALMANAC Government Contacts PROVINCIAL:

Ferries’ predicament, it’s time to take a hard look, ladies and gentlemen. The time is now for the highly-paid executive of B.C. Ferries to show the B.C. citizenry and the government that they can effect positive and effective changes and run an efficient, self-sustaining business. D.J. MCLEAN Qualicum Beach

BILLING FLAWED We have reviewed the figures concerning the new water rates and have concerns regarding the recommendations from the Parksville council’s committee of the whole. We are mindful of conserving water and our current water consumption is below the 90 cubic meter minimum. If applied, the new rates will increase our rates by over 28 per cent (using the figures provided by the City of Parksville Fact Sheet, dated September 28, 2012 and having these figures verified by city staff). This is an unacceptable rate increase and a hardship in times of overall rising costs to everyday living. It would have been helpful for residents to have received the fact sheet with the recent utility notice so they could easily evaluate their specific costs. We have sent a letter to the City of Parksville. We hope our feedback is helpful and the mayor and council will consider our concerns in their review of the proposed billing structure. JEAN AND GORD ALLAN Parksville

BRIDGE THE INLET How many more people have to die on the Malahat, the most notorious piece of pavement in British Columbia? This most recent incident occurred almost immediately after our highways department spent millions supposedly making it safer. That would have gone a long way to the building of a bridge. About 20 years ago, a man by the name of Jack Wallis proposed a bridge across the Saanich Inlet between Mill Bay and Deep Cove, which is at the North end of the Saanich Penisula. This would have alleviated a good portion of the traffic on the Malahat and reduced some of the necessity of upgrading that portion of the highway. At that time it was met with considerable resistance from various sources with interests in other areas. With another upgrading now, including the installation of continuous barriers between the traffic flows, perhaps it is time to reconsider that. There are fantastic bridges being built all around the world and this would definitely be an asset. As a toll bridge, it could probably be paid off in a very short time and reduce considerably the amount of carbon dioxide produced by traffic climbing the Malahat.

Re: ‘Progressive view’ (THE NEWS, Oct. 12) The nice thing about democracy is that it allows for a difference of viewpoints to be expressed, and yes, even passionately argued. Conviction in one’s beliefs should be considered an admirable trait, not an example of exclusion, radicalism or dogma. Yes, there is a need for progress. Yes, progress can be good. The real point that letter writer Gary Child does not seem to grasp is the direction that the aforementioned progress should take. Using his terms, in one of these “polarized positions”, the “progressives” are all in favour of altering the local environment (expensive), engineering solutions to the problems the alterations cause (often expensive), all in the noble name of creating jobs to improve our lifestyle (while increasing their potential bottom line as a just reward). The “regressive” element that Child and his business friends so often complain about (as a fly on the wall I have heard them), are not out to drive civilization back to the stone age, but to look a little closer at what we have, what we really need, and the future consequences of our actions. In nature, any population that exceeds its resources, dies. Defining that limit is the real problem between growth and conservation, as it will impose a limitation on what we can safely build to maintain or improve our lifestyle. ARLESS MCNEILL Parksville

GOBSMACKED BY MLA I almost aspirated my tea when I unfolded the Friday, Oct. 12 edition of your fine publication and saw the headline “Walk on, rent a car.” Ron Cantelon is quoted so, so I am obliged to take the quotation at reporter Neil Horner’s most credible word. When I stopped coughing and read the article, I found myself absolutely gobsmacked that an Island MLA of any political stripe could possibly offer up such a ridiculous proposal to his/ her constituents. I’m sure that Cantelon does not pay to use the ferry, but regardless, he and the other MLAs on the Island know better than most others in our idle, non-sitting legislature that Island constituents depend on BC Ferries not only for personal travel, but for the transportation of goods we receive from the mainland. Was Cantelon joking or quoted tongue-incheek? Was he again engaging mouth before

&

BOUQUETS BRICKBATS putting brain into gear? Or was he merely reflecting the problem-solving process used by the B.C. Liberals? If it was a joke, I am sure that thousands of low and fixed income islanders fell onto the floor laughing. It would seem to this constituent that Cantelon’s quote is some combination of the latter two, speaking without thinking, and a reflection of the seemingly apparent ignorance of the BC Liberals as to the near critical financial condition of the low-fixed income class and the quickly disappearing middle class. Let’s say a mother and child were required to travel to Abbottsford for a two-day trip. To rent a budget-type car as per Cantelon’s suggestion, one would have to take the bus to Vancouver (let’s say $15 return), rent a car ($49.36 x 2) for a total of $113.72. To take one’s own car, the cost would be $49.25 x 2 (ferry cost for car) plus $22.25 x 2 (driver and child) for a total of $144. The presumption is that the rental car mileage is free and the gas costs are equal (although gas in Abbottsford is $0.10 per litre cheaper). To Cantelon’s credit, mother and child save $26.28 over the two-day trip. To his discredit, several hours are added to the trip in bus travel to and from Horseshoe Bay-Vancouver and picking up and dropping off the rental car in Vancouver. Reading on further, Cantelon offers hope that the new ferries could/would be retrofitted with natural gas. We produce natural gas in this province, and we import our oil. Where was the forward thinking re: natural gas use, when the German-built fuel pigs we currently use were built? Apparently, time management means nothing to Cantelon and his government, as is evident by their hammering through hundreds of motions and laws in the last days of the spring sitting, then citing closure with no time to debate. Then they suspend the fall session to “engage their constituents?” Where and when are the town hall meetings, and is the entire constituency invited to engage you — or just select supporters? This constituent would love to engage Mr. Cantelon in a public forum about local issues, such as ferries, health care and hydro, along with provincial issues. If he, as he often infers, is doing such a bang up job representing the residents of North Nanaimo to Parksville-Qualicum Beach, what does he have to hide? DANA MCCOMBER Nanoose Bay

Please follow these guidelines during water main flushing: 1. If your water is discoloured, run an outside tap until the water clears. 2. Check for discolouration of water before doing laundry. The flushing program is a required preventive maintenance operation that cleans the water mains and allows the District to provide better service to our customers. During the flushing period, please do laundry only in the evenings or on the weekend and endure that you have sufficient water for the day. In no case will responsibility be accepted by the Qualicum Bay Horne Lake Water District for any damage arising out of the use of discoloured water. Any questions regarding water main flushing should be directed to the Office at 250-757-8507.

Hormonal Breakouts? Not Just a Teenage Problem! Hormonal breakouts affect many teenagers today. But teenagers are not the only ones; acne can strike adults too - more than half of all adult women and about a quarter of adult men.

So much easier being a girl… Like most people, I too, struggle with acne… One problem I have particularly struggled with has been my jaw line and back… That’s when EstroSense entered my life and changed it for the better…After the first 3 months, my back and jaw breakouts have diminished significantly. On top of it, virtually all my PMS symptoms have almost disappeared…it’s so much easier being a girl now. Beauty Blogger Ellie S.

Many women will typically see breakouts during their menstrual cycle due to hormonal fluctuations. Estrogen dominance due to hormone replacement therapy, the birth control pill, xenoestrogens from the environment (BPA, phthalates, parabens) or a sluggish liver can also contribute to hormonal breakouts.

EstroSense is a unique natural formula that helps maintain healthy hormone balance by supporting the liver and in turn, healthy skin.

LIVE THEATRE REVIEW

Humour sets stage for drama

Separate Tables runs until Oct. 28 in QB REVIEW BY LISSA ALEXANDER

show and who used to put the vintage fashion shows on herself for 30 years, up and down the Island. Patten modelled for Wilson 25 years ago (the first time at the Lighthouse Community Hall) and took over running the shows about 10 years ago. Wilson’s triplet grandchildren will be helping out in the show, Patten said.

I was back in my flat in England Thursday evening, lounging on the couch in front of the TV, captivated by an English drama. At least that’s what it seemed like, as I watched Echo Players’ season opener, Separate Tables, at the Village Theatre. Separate Tables is written by acclaimed English playwright Terrance Rattigan and made up of two one-act plays, Table by the Window and Table Number Seven, set in a private hotel in Bournemouth, England. The play opens with a scene in the dining room and I couldn’t help but smile at the perfect little set complete with rows of tables, a finely stocked wall cabinet, and quaint furnishings very reminiscent of an English hotel. The hotel’s permanent residents sit at their tables in their fine dinner clothes, making small talk in their wonderful, pretentious accents, throwing around a bit of humour but mostly setting the stage for some drama. In waltzes a primped Mrs. Shankland, played superbly by Aviva Fox, and the chatter ceases. She’s dressed to the nines and is the perfect subject for some old gossiping hotel guests. When hotel resident Mr. Fowler ‚ a disgraced politician‚ enters, the drama begins. Mrs. Shankland is his ex-wife and they have clearly had a tumultuous relationship still seething with emotion. Although this act goes a bit long, each actor seems very well suited to their role and does an admirable job remembering their many lines.

NEW EXPANDED FLIGHT SCHEDULE FLIGHTS BETWEEN QUALICUM BEACH & VANCOUVER

AUREN RUVINSKY PHOTO

Charlie and Virginia Brucker have been helping to make a difference in Nanoose Bay for over two decades.

Christmas Elves need help in Nanoose Bay AUREN RUVINSKY news@pqbnews.com

Fresh off the successful ‘Thanks for Giving’ food drive last weekend, Nanoose Bay Community Cupboard founders Virginia and Charlie Brucker are gearing up for the Christmas Elf program. The good work of the Bruckers in the Nanoose Bay area started more than 20 years ago with the elf program and the food bank that grew out of it now helps over 60 people a month through the year. Over the holiday season they get several times as many people in need of some extra help, expecting around 280 people this year. The Oct. 6 food drive collected 161 bags of groceries and at least $1,000 cash said Charlie Brucker of the efforts helped by Quality Foods, the Coastal Community Credit Union, Nanoose Place and the Nanoose Bay Lions and Volunteer Fire Department. Brown paper Quality Foods bags were mailed to every mailbox in Nanoose Bay and returned with non per-

ishable foods by many, but they still need more help he pointed out. The Bruckers grew up in Vancouver and spent eight years in northern B.C. before eagerly moving back to the coast. Soon after arriving in 1985 they noticed that even in wealthy Nanoose Bay there were still people in need. As a teacher Virginia said she had an inside view of the community and frequently had students who didn’t bring enough food to eat. The turning point came when someone they knew had their power and water shut off in the middle of the winter. The Bruckers passed the hat to help her and realized there must be other people in similar trouble. People went to food banks in Nanaimo and Parksville but the Bruckers

ďŹ gured the travel was an extra burden on people already struggling. “Sometimes people think only single parents use food banks,â€? Charlie recently told The News. “But all sorts of people need our help. We have seniors, college students and people with chronic health conditions who visit each month.â€? So they focus on the elf program through the fall and holiday season, with Christmas trees coming to popular stores and locations across Nanoose Bay and into surrounding communities. The trees are decorated with speciďŹ c present requests that people can buy for someone. To help or donate contact the Bruckers at 250-468-9888, info@nanoosecommunityservices.com, www. nanoosecommunityservices.com, or watch for their Christmas trees. Food can be dropped at Nanoose Place from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. or the Nanoose Bay Quality Foods.

TRACTOR PULL: Young and old alike enjoyed the hay ride Sunday at the Harvest Fall Fair at Silver Meadows Farm in Errington.

Splendid job by Fabris CONTINUED FROM PAGE 15

Geoff Jenkins does a bangup job of playing Mr. Fowler and he and Fox conjure up some great chemistry between their characters. The hotel residents were very believable and I also loved the waitresses who played their roles to a T and brought back vivid memories of classic disinterested and curt servers in England. The set was masterfully done, led by set designer Ian Taylor. Between scenes, when the stage team loaded all the tables onto a revolving platform and spun it around to reveal a beautiful lounge on the other side, the audience broke into applause. Table Number Seven takes place in the same hotel, two years later, and has some of the

same characters. Fox doesn’t disappoint in her very different role as a self-conscious and mentally unstable 30-something. Aileen Fabris, who does a splendid job playing the same hotel resident in both acts, takes more of a central role in Table Number Seven as a well-meaning but overbearing mother. Echo Players president Paul Churchill does well in his role as a retired soldier who likes to tell stories. Controversy ensues when Fabris’ character digs up a scandal about him. Although controversy and turmoil fill the hotel in the two acts, one character‚ the hotel owner Mrs. Cooper (played skillfully by Lynn Beamond), grounds the characters and

reminds us that emotion is a part of life and therefore drama is inevitable. But it can be dealt with and extinguished in a calm and wise manner by strong and stable individuals. Mrs. Cooper’s character injects an implicit theme of tolerance and empathy and left me musing about the strong women in my life. Don’t miss Separate Tables at the Village Theatre in Qualicum Beach, playing Wednesday through Saturday evenings and Sunday afternoons until Oct. 28. Tickets are $18, $15 for seniors and $10 for students. Stop by the box office in Qualicum Beach during office hours at 110 West 2nd Ave., call 250-752-3522 or e-mail info@ echoplayers.ca for tickets.

Two of the grandchildren, the girls, will model some of the fashions. Patten will show 67 outfits dating back to the 1880s, along with some stunning rhinestones and crystal jewellery, as well as vintage accessories, she said. There will also be some fashions provided by Dress for Less. Some of the items to look forward to at the show include a 1935 and a 1971 wedding dress, both donated by a woman in Port Alberni, and a 1950s prom dress, donated by a woman in Victoria. Other items from the show have been collected over the years, from thrift shops, eBay and by people donating them, Patten explained. One of the best parts of the show for Patten is when she sees someone lean over and whisper something to their companion, she said, because she always knows what they’re saying. “They’ll lean over and say to the person next to them ‘you know, I had that one, she said.

“So there’s a lot of nostalgia and sentiment with the fashion shows. Patten advises not to wait to purchase tickets, as the last show she did in Qualicum Beach earlier this year sold out and had more than 100 people on a waiting list. One Hundred Years of Fashion and Afternoon Tea happens Saturday, Oct. 20 from 2–4 p.m. at the Lighthouse Community Centre in Qualicum Bay at 240 Lions Way. Advance tickets are $20 and $25 at the door, if not sold out, and include tea and some treats. All of Patten’s Vintage Fashion Show’s are non-profit fundraisers, and the proceeds from this show will go to refurbishing the stage at the hall. Get tickets from Dress For Less in Bowser and Coombs, The Salish Sea Market in Bowser and Don Kemp Signs in Qualicum Beach. There will be plenty of door prizes and a prize for most fashionable hat in the audience. For more information visit www.communityhall. ca and click on coming events.

WINE AND FOOD FESTIVAL

Raise a glass with Parksville Uncorked The annual Parksville wine and food festival event is now just a few short months away

I

t’s time to raise your glass once again and toast the exceptional wines, beers and cuisine of British Columbia at the fifth annual Parksville Uncorked Wine and Food Festival, slated to run from Feb. 21-24, 2013. Tickets go on sale Nov. 1 for Parksville Uncorked 2013, which will showcase fine wines and craft beers from around the province and at the same time pairs them with delectable cuisine from restaurants, resorts and specialty food purveyors from Parksville and the rest of the Island. The events, sponsored in part by The NEWS, are a collaboration between local resorts and chefs with B.C. wine and beer makers. Tigh-Na-Mara Seaside Spa Resort

kicks off festivities by welcoming beer lovers to the highly popular Parksville Untapped beer tasting event on Feb. 21. Craft beers and ciders from around the province will be paired with great local eats. Guests of Untapped will receive an exclusive take-home beer glass to taste the evening’s fine brews. Next the Swirl Gala returns to The Beach Club Resort Feb, 22 where 28 wineries will offer samples of their finest. Chefs from local resorts and restaurants will complement the wines with a sumptuous selection of appetizers and gourmet bites. Guests of Swirl will receive an exclusive take-home glass.

For wine lovers seeking a more intimate tasting experience, there are two exciting winemakers’ dinners. On Feb. 23 The Beach Club’s Pacific Prime executive chef will pair a gastronomical event with the wines of Burrowing Owl Estate Winery, with guidance from Burrowing Owl CEO Chris Wyse. Tigh-Na-Mara Resort’s Cedar Room restaurant will feature the wines of Road 13 and a menu by executive chef Eric Edwards. The festival ends with the Bubbles Brunch at Tigh-Na-Mara on Feb. 24, where B.C. sparkling wines will be paired with a decadent Sunday brunch. There will also be local tours for guests attending events that weekend. Details will be posted on www. parksvilleuncorked.com once confirmed.

Diversified sustainable retirement income Have you ever seen an old friend recently and been shocked to see how much they had changed over the years? After a quick conversation, you may have felt a little introspective about your own life and how much things had changed for you. You may be facing some of the same feelings if your focus has changed from saving to generating income for retirement. Not long ago, you could rely on the stability of government bonds and Guaranteed Investment Certificates (GICs) to protect your savings while providing you with an attractive rate of return. But as interest rates change, so too does the amount of interest income that a GIC portfolio produces. Many investors today are taking advantage

of diversified income mutual funds that focus on investing in a variety of income-oriented securities.

Despite heated discussion, strategic vision gets preliminary approval NEIL HORNER

news@pqbnews.com

Utopian, impractical, even delusional. These were some of the words used by Regional District directors to describe the first draft of the RDN’s 2013-2015 strategic plan. However, after some revisions by district staff, they voted at Tuesday night’s committee of the whole meeting to give it preliminary approval — but not without much discussion. At the meeting, district general manager Paul Thorkelson detailed a number of concerns expressed by board members about the plan, which was hatched at a planning session in April. At the top of the list of concerns was the need to include a call for austerity in the plan. “Considering the persistent economic uncertainty lingering since 2007 and 208, direc-

tors remain especially concerned about taxation rates, and particularly about increases to taxation over the current term, Thorkelson said. “The suggested response has been to emphasize austerity in this strategic plan. However, Thorkelson noted the term has come to mean more than just prudent spending, which could pose a problem. “It has come to mean more than simply extreme plainness or self-imposed minimalism, he said. “Due to economic conditions in Europe and the United States, austerity measures have come to refer to a specific suite of policy measures that pair deep cuts to services with increases in taxation. That, he suggested, was quite different from the message directors had hoped to get out to the public.

AGM ON THURSDAY

Local control of water is key AUREN RUVINSKY

writer@pqbnews.com

The Arrowsmith Watersheds Coalition Society hopes to raise concern about local drinking water sources with a special presentation at their AGM on Thursday. “The main goal is to highlight the importance the need for local control of our water,

make sure it stays in the hands of the community rather than bureaucrats or higher up politicians, said society director Michael Jessen. They will host a free talk by Nanaimo filmmaker Paul Manly with material from his recent documentaries on water. He will show portions of his most recent film Voices of the River

about the Nanaimo River watershed and Troubled Waters to examine the threat to public water systems and watersheds on Vancouver Island. Privatization, public private partnerships, privately owned community watersheds and ground water contamination and international trade agreements will also be discussed.

WILSON, ‘Bob’ Robert Brian

Nov.25, 1949 ~ Sept. 29, 2012

It’s with great sadness to announce the passing of Robert Brian Wilson (Bob). Predeceased by his father Robert, mother Kathleen and sister Donna Haugen. He is survived by his daughter Tara Wilson (Lance), grandchildren Logan and Carson Robinson, brother James, sisters Joyce and Ronnie, brother-in-law Terry Haugen, nieces Khristen, Corine and nephew Kaal. Special thanks to Cindy, Mel and Carol for watching out for my Dad. And to Tommy for the morning coffees, those made his days. I wish that I could see you Dad For just a little while, I wish that I could hug you And see your lovely smile. But wishing gets me nowhere And longing is in vain So I will hold you in my heart Until we meet again.

Celebration of Life will be held on October 20th at 1pm at the Parksville Legion. YATES FUNERAL SERVICE & CREMATORIUM (250-248-5859) in care of arrangements.

Aunger, Leleah Marie 1936 - 2012 Leleah (Lee) passed away September 25, 2012 after a short illness. Lee is survived by her husband Albert, son Darrell & daughter-in-law Julie, daughter Noreen (Schaefer) and son-in-law Jim, and son Warren & daughter-in-law Shauna, along with grandchildren Leiv and Alysa, brother Harold and spouse Mary Ellen, and brother George and partner Nancy. Lee grew up in Moncton, NB spending summers at her family’s cottage on the ocean. This gave her a lifelong love of the ocean along with the sights, sounds, and aromas surrounding it. Upon graduating from nursing school, Lee spent time in Montreal, Calgary and Edmonton during her early career. She married Albert, a geologist at the time, and shortly thereafter relocated to Grande Prairie, AB. Albert completed his law degree during this time. They started a family and introduced Darrell, Noreen, and Warren into their lives. Their next stop was Peace River, AB where Albert was appointed as a Magistrate, and Lee resumed her operating nurse career. Following a 4 year stint, they relocated to Ban, AB where their children gained their love of the outdoors excelling in activities such as skiing, hiking, and ďŹ shing. Upon retirement, Lee and Albert relocated to the Parksville area close to the ocean. Lee was an accomplished craftsperson excelling in sewing and needlepoint. Lee had a great interest in travelling and they spent many winters in Mexico driving their trailer down and back for several years. They also went on several cruises to far ung locales. The family would like to thank the nurses and sta at the Nanaimo General Hospital and Palliative Care units for their excellent care and attention to comfort. In honouring Lee’s wishes there will be no service. If desired, memorial donations can be made to the Nanaimo Palliative Care unit in lieu of owers.

HORSE JUMPING

Local finds equestrain success Emma Edwardson coming off a summer to remember in horse jumping events JAMES CL ARKE

sports@pqbnews.com

You’ll have to excuse Emma Edwardson if she’s been feeling her oats a bit these days, but the young equestrian with big dreams is coming off a summer to remember. The good natured little filly has been training 4-6 days a week for a couple years now, and all that time in the saddle paid off. “It sure did,” confirmed proud mom Jennifer, explaining how Emma spent August in Alberta and turned in a strong showing at Rocky Mountain Show Jumping in Calgary where she spent three full weeks of competition with her two horses Jack and Jiani, taking top ribbons in all rings while competing in large classes that included adults and professionals. Highlights from Rocky Mountain included a first place finish in 3’ Medal Class; a silver medal in Pony Jumpers; third overall in Hunter Classic; third in her Jr./Am Jumper Division; fourth

overall in her Jumper Mini Prix; placed 13th out of 36 competitors in the Hunter Derby held in the Grand Prix ring, a first for Emma, who at 11, was the youngest rider in class that day.

“That was very exciting,” she confirmed. Emma as the story goes travelled to the show with her family but without her usual trainer and rode with two trainers

from Edmonton. Talk to her mom and she’ll tell you her daughter ‘learned a lot and had a great show experience with other barns.” CLOSER TO HOME: In July at Arbutus Meadows, Emma and Jioni took Champion honours in the 2’9” Hunter division, and did likewise with her jumper horse Jack in the Pony Hunter. Fast forward to Sept. 28-30, and Emma picked up where she left off at the Saanich Shows In The Sun (SSITS) finals, where she was competing with Jack, Jiani, and her new horse Ginger, an ex-Grand Prix horse. Emma and Ginger surprised some people and certainly served notice they’ll be a tandem to reckon with when they finished 1st in the Hunter Derby (one of the specialty classes). Edwardson also captured second in the same class with Jiani, giving her the rare onetwo finish. “It was a pretty awesome summer — it was really fun,” said Emma. See HARD WORK, page 38

Generals break six-game slide Oceanside’s junior hockey team beats Comox Valley Glacier Kings 2-1 Sunday JAMES CL ARKE

sports@pqbnews.com

Taylor Gray’s power play marker at 11:10 of the second period held up to be the winner, and Oceanside’s Save-On-Foods Generals snapped a six-game losing skid with a workmanlike 2-1 win over the Comox Valley Glacier Kings in VIJHL action on Sunday. It was the first time the Generals have beaten the Yetis in three meetings this year. Sunday’s rare afternoon game at Oceanside Place was also the Gens’ third game in three days, but the team still had plenty of jump as they pushed the defending north division champions for three periods. Michael Fretz (Riel Gibson, Taylor Gray), scored the lone goal of the opening period to stake Oceanside to a

1-0 lead. Comox scored 7:29 into the second, and Gray, the team’s leading point-getter with six goals and seven assists for 13 points in 14 games, fed the net off a quick snap shot from the top of the left face-off circle on the pp at 11:10. There was no second period lapse in this game — Oceanside had been outscored 20-8 in the second stanza so far this season — as they out-shot the ‘Kings 19-7 in that period (their best one period output of the year so far), and 47-24 overall. Comox is currently tops in the four-team north division at 8-5-1 and fourth overall in the nine-team league. Powell River puckstopper Alex Mastrodonato, 18, was solid for the Generals in his first junior hockey win.

“Oceanside played really well — they played really well the last time we played them, too,” Glacier Kings Head coach Bill Rotheisier said outside the visitor’s dressing room after the game. “They came out hard and we weren’t ready for it, and that’s something we have to fix internally.” While the Gens were looking for their first win in a while, the Kings had an eight game win streak come to an end against Peninsula the night before. “Maybe, yeah,” Rotheisier conceded when asked if his squad may have taken their opponents lightly on Sunday. “I think the boys had pretty good streak where things were pretty easy for us, but that’s (no excuse). I think there was a lot of watching on the ice.” See GREAT TEAM WIN, page 39

HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL

Varsity Whalers keep on winning Parksville team takes early lead with touchdown and hammers Carson Graham – Handsworth next on schedule JAMES CL ARKE

sports@pqbnews.com

The Varsity Whalers continued their winning ways last Saturday, as they rolled out a 56-13 road win over the Carson Graham Eagles in BC High School AA Football action. According to Whalers’ head coach Jeremy Conn the game started with pouring rain and the Eagles looked impressive taking their opening drive in for a touchdown and the early 6-0 lead. “But then the rain stopped pouring and (we) started pouring on the points.” Indeed, as the blue and white replied with six unanswered TDs for a 42-6 lead at the half.

Leading the way for Ballenas was quarterback Liam O’Brien who was 12-for-17 passing for 250 yards in the air and three touchdowns. O’Brien also rushed four times for 34 yards and added three tackles and an interception with a 35 yard return on defense. He also ran in a two point convert. On the receiving end was Dallas Towle who had five catches for 130 yards including a 79 yard TD bomb. Towle also had a 86 yard kickoff return for a TD to open up the second half. Scott Childs also had a stellar game with four catches for 71 yards, two of which were touchdowns. Childs also added two interceptions on defence, one of which he returned 36 yards for the major.

NEWS FILE PHOTO

Scott Childs — during a touchdown in a former game — was among several to have a good game in the most recent Whalers action.

Rounding out the scoring was Tysen Hunt who pounded out 67 yards and three TDs on eight carries. Gabriel Doretto was 6-for-6 on extra point kicks. On defense, middle linebacker Matt Leonard led the way with five tackles, a sack, and two fumble recoveries. “I was pretty nervous when Carson took the ball and scored on us,” Conn said after, adding “we came out flat and were not tackling well, but then our kids responded and looked brilliant at times. “It feels awesome as a coach when your players take the game plan and the preparation and are able to execute it on offense while also being able to play good assignment defense,” said the longtime local teacher/coach. “I am proud of how our skill players are making big plays while our line is getting it done on both sides of the ball. That said, we still have some work to do when it comes to tackling, hustle, and football IQ.” NEXT UP The varsity Whalers travel to North Van Friday for a big conference clash against their rivals the Handsworth Royals. In JV action, the Whalers came up just short in 14-13 final to the Bulldogs at John Barsby Secondary in Nanaimo last Wednesday. The loss puts the young Whalers regular season record to 1-2 for fourth in the eight team AA Island Conference. The JV Whalers are back in Nanaimo Thursday to take on the NDSS Islanders. Kickoff is 3:15 p.m.

KSS SOCCER

Soccer season finale Big event held in Oceanside JAMES CL ARKE

sports@pqbnews.com

Kwalikum Secondary School’s senior boys soccer team took on all comers last week, and the lads in the burgundy strips certainly look poised to make some noise in the post season. KSS was sharp at home last Tuesday when they blanked the John Barsby Bulldogs 4-nil in AA league action. Four days later, the Kondors hosted a fourteam mini-tourney at QB Rec Fields where they rolled over the Marc Isfeld Ice from Courtenay 4-0, then trimmed the Carihi Tyees 1-0. Ben Robson made a great cross to Jesse Binnersley for the lone tally in that one. As for their league win over Barsby, the Bulldogs came to town looking for their first win of the season, but the search continues as the host Kondors looked quick and comfortable in the one-sided win. Darien Atkinson led the charge with two goals; Ben Robson and Austin Phye, who was making his return to the lineup after missing five-and-half games due to injury, added singles. “We had most of our players back and the quality was there,” said Kwalikum head coach Butch Gayton, whose side led 2-0 at the half. “That was a good game. The boys played well as usual, they’re a very good side,” well-known local soccer coach Dan Mahony, who rarely misses a KSS home game, surmised after the match. Anchoring the back end and earning props for their play that game were Evan Stefanek, Tyler Illingworth and Jesse Binnersley. The Kondors are currently tied for top spot in the nine-team mid-Island Sr. Boys soccer league with AAA Dover at 3-0. The league is a mix of AA and AAA teams which will be separated come the playoffs. NEXT UP: KSS is on the road next week to end its regular season with two tough games against Woodland’s Soccer Academy Oct. 16, and Dover Bay two days later. Kwalikum’s playoffs start Oct. 23, and KSS will host the eight-team AA North Island finals Oct. 30-31.

Looking down the road, Emma will be moving up with her new larger horse Ginger and focusing on equitation while continuing on pony jumper Jack. Emma will take Jack to compete in the Pony Jumper Division at storied Spruce Meadows in Calgary next spring. Emma’s coach, Cheryl Keith, who is the head coach at Queen Margaret’s School, had good things to say about her student. “I’ve been working with Emma since she started in the short stirrup we call it, which is the 2’ beginner division and now she’s jumping three to three foot three consistently, so for her

In a continued effort to encourage higher rates of recovery, BCUOMA has built a strong support network across the province. Today, participation includes 209 brand-owner members, 39 collectors and processors, 520+ return collection facilities and more than 4,000 generators. In addition, BCUOMA is reprising its successful ambassador program this summer – with two ambassadors touring the province to educate and raise awareness of the importance of used oil and antifreeze recycling.

Although it’s commonly accepted that oil and antifreeze are not household garbage we can simply throw out, more than one million litres of used oil ends up in BC landďŹ lls every year. When you consider that it only takes one drop of oil to contaminate a million drops of water, the problem is clear: there’s just too many drops to count, too many to ignore. BCUOMA is a non-for-proďŹ t organization that encourages British Columbians to responsibly recycle used oil, oil ďŹ lters, oil containers, used antifreeze and antifreeze containers. Since the launch of the program in 2003, British Columbians have done an exceptional job of recycling their used oil materials.

Protecting our province from the harmful effects of used oil and antifreeze must be a responsibility we all share, together. So please, next time you look to dispose of used oil or antifreeze materials, find a collection facility near you. Here are three easy ways to do so:

“Great team win, Oceanside head coach and GM Brent Demerais confirmed after the game. “They came out, got the puck deep, and out-skated and out-worked a team they hadn’t beaten yet this year. They’re starting to buy into our system, and that’s the biggest thing right now. The Generals conditioning was evident Sunday “and some new additions are making a huge difference, said Demerais. The line of Travis Flug, Cole Schneider and James Sneddon he pointed out, “really made a difference in the game. Maybe not in the scoring, but they were physical and they got under the skin of Comox. “WE NEED A W. That off-the-cuff comment by one of the Oceanside Generals’ players unpacking his gear in the parking lot prior to Saturday night’s VIJHL home game spoke volumes. The Generals opened their three game push last Friday in North Saanich where they came up on the short end of a 4-3 final to the Peninsula Panthers. The two teams were tied 1-1 after 20 minutes and Oceanside took a 3-2 lead into the 3rd but the Panthers struck for two unanswered goals in the final 10 minutes for the 4-3 win. At home on Saturday against the 8-2 Saanich Braves in front of an announced crowd of 276, Oceanside was outshot 44-23 and dropped it’s sixth straight game in a 5-2 final. Gens’ forward Lee Orpen was a bright spot on the night and rewarded with the Games 3rd star. GAME ON Now 4-8-2 on the season, the Generals are in action at Bear Mountain Arena Wednesday against the 7-6 Westshore Wolves, and return home to ‘The Place Saturday for another North Division matchup against the Campbell River Storm (3-6-1). ICE CHIPS “There’s a lot of good players, a lot of physical players, a lot of skilled players in this league, Rotheisier said when asked his take on what hockey fans can expect when they to a VIJHL game.
