FALL 2012

is here and so are THE NEW TRENDS Article submitted by: Haley – Professional Makeup Artist

Just like the weather and clothing fashion, makeup colours tend to be on the darker side for fall and winter. So what are some of the top makeup looks for the season? DRAMATIC EYES: with jewel toned and metallic shadows of blue, green and purple.

THE SMOKEY EYE:

ZULU -05 SERIES

Instrument Inspired Aviator Watches

Built for pilots, by pilots! Original design by:

Zulu-05-GMT

done in browns or the new neutral – purple.

WELL DEFINED EYE: using liquid liner – classically winged or dramatic with a geometric look.

BOLD LIP COLOUR:

think deep wines, burgundies and dark cherries.

CLASSIC RED LIP: timeless and there is a shade for everyone.

What’s haute? Receive a

COMPLIMENTARY MAKEOVER with professional makeup artist, Haley when you purchase a minimum $55 of L1O haute cosmetics. Limited time offer.

THE MATTE LIP: especially with deeper shades.

FLAWLESS SKIN: perfected using primer, concealer, foundation and powder.

NATURALLY CONTOURED FACE: accentuate and improve with contouring and less highlighting.

ACCESSORY NAILS: metallics, very colourful, eye catching and treated as an accessory.

I am always asked how I to do the ‘winged eye’. For a foolproof winged liner, draw a line along your lash line with pencil eyeliner or eyeshadow, and then trace liquid liner on top. To create a ‘wing’, use a straight edge (credit card works) and line it up from the edge of your nostril to the outer edge of your eye. Connect the liquid liner from the outside into your original line. Clean up any imperfections by running a cotton swab dipped in makeup remover along the edges. For more drama have a few lash extensions applied to the outer corners of the eye.

MORE TRICKS: prep lips with concealer or foundation before applying lipstick. This ensures colour is the same as in the tube and helps it last longer. Also lining and filling in with a lip pencil is especially important with reds and the bold lip colours. When working with dark eyeshadows, it is best to do your eyes before applying your foundation so it is easy to dust off any misplaced shadow on the face. When applying your makeup, use proper brushes, build colour a little at a time and remember to blend, blend, blend! STYLE ALERT

How to Wear Socks ❊ WITH HEELS OR BOOTS ❊

Who ever has enough tights? Fall leg-wear now in.

Whether wearing pumps, spikes or platforms, some women think the only options underneath are to go with pantyhose or with nothing at all, but fashionistas tell us differently. Now it’s perfectly acceptable to show off socks as cute accessories under boots or heels. The secret to socks and heels is getting the right socks paired with the right heels. Think texture. Find socks and shoes that have different colours and textures – you never want to be matchymatchy. If you have a solid black shoe, try a hot pink, striped sock. If you have patterned shoes then try a solid, darkcoloured sock. And don’t forget, those socks have to be thin as it never looks good if your socks bulge out the top of your shoes. Socks and boots are another hot trend. Some women have always enjoyed this look but it’s recently become a fashion phenomenon. And best of all, this is a look where fashion meets function. A long sock under a boot keeps you warm and dry and looks stylish too.

To pair boots with socks think about length and style. Of course, you have to invest in socks that will hit above the height of your boot. This might mean midcalf socks for ankle boots or knee-high or even thigh-high socks for taller boots. Some socks can be slouched for a more relaxed look while others must be pulled tight to look put-together. And keep in mind, ankle-high boots tend to cut legs off and make you look shorter, so adding a short slouchy sock on top of that might add weight where you don’t want it. To find a stylish combination think complimentary and not matching. If you have a fun, patterned sock, pair it with a simple boot without a high heel like a riding boot. If you have a smooth, simple sock feel free to pair it with adorned and heeled boots. And don’t forget fun socks with those wellies for the rainy days. In all, consider socks a fashion accessory just like any other. Invest in colours, styles and patterns to create either a fun and flirty look or a pulledtogether, sophisticated and sexy air.

$19.99 IT GLOWS IN THE DARK, AND IT ARRIVED ON OUR SHELVES OCTOBER 2. Meet Clay Jannon, a recessiondownsized graphic designer working the night shift at Mr. Penumbra’s 24 hour bookstore (situated next door to a strip club). This tiny shop holds books impossibly old and rare. And meet the unusual “customers who arrive late at night, not to purchase but to borrow obscure texts from dark corners of the shop. Clay’s curiosity is aroused - he notes patterns to their behaviour, and putting his gaming skills and passion for codes to work, sets out to discover what is really going on. The secret he stumbles on is much bigger than the bookstore can hold . Enter the massive data digitization capacity of Google. But Google alone cannot provide the answer - the old knowledge of first books, of alchemy and immortality is brought to bear. Robin Sloan describes himself as a media inventor – “someone primarily

interested in content – words, pictures, ideas – who also experiments with new formats, new tools, new technology. In this literary adventure he has created a world where Gutenberg meets Google books. Clay’s quest puts to rest the notion that technology will ever replace print and paper books. And that’s a good thing, because Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore is an irresistible read!

NIGHT NIGHT.... SLEEPTIGHT Haven't we all used this expression? Did you know that there are two explanations for it? 1. In medieval times beds were strung with ropes to hold the mattress. Over time the ropes would sag - so before you went to bed - you tightened the ropes. AND 2. Tight - meaning to sleep well or soundly.

By: Judith Moore

Personally I like the first one - it's more fun imaging having to tighten up the ropes before getting into bed.

Our bedrooms should be an oasis, a retreat for us to rejuvenate ourselves as well as a place to rest. We are inundated with commercials about mattresses and pillows on a regular basis - and the various company's have made the way we sleep into a sales tool. Sleep on your side? we have a mattress for that - sleep flat on your back with one foot touching the floor? - we have a mattress for that sleep with your head under your pillow? we have SCUBA gear for that. Mattresses and box springs are each 12" (30 cm) - if this continues - invest in a bed ladder. Designers have already run amok in our kitchens making granite countertops, huge gas ranges, and

drawer dishwashers a must have. Our bathrooms - walk-in showers tiled in marble, his and hers vanities, heated toilet seats - and now - they are headed for our bedrooms ! The "recommended" Designer Bedroom accoutrements are endless - How many toss cushions are too many? Linen sheets? 600 thread count egyptian cotton bedding? Silk or down duvets? Upholstered headboard? How high would you like your headboard? How about a sleigh bed done in leather? Silk charmeuse coverlet? In red? And, just like our kitchens and bathrooms, the Designer Bedroom costs have escalated substantially.

JUST FOR FUN - if you are deciding to redo your oasis Professional OfďŹ ces Residential 3FUBJM t $PNNFSDJBM

Pumpkins Pumpkins are fall beauties. With their rich orange colour and large size, they embellish front porches when Halloween rolls around and make delicious culinary treats. Pumpkins

will stay fresh for several weeks if their skins are unbroken, giving you the possibility of using them first as decorative items and then as an ingredient in many different recipes.

ARE DECORATIVE AND DELICIOUS!

Pumpkins are annual vines from the cucurbitaceous family, which also includes cucumbers, zucchinis, and eggplants. They are harvested in the fall, towards the end of September and especially throughout the month of October. Many producers allow you to pick your own pumpkins in the fields, a much-loved family activity before Halloween. Piles of pumpkins with their varying shades of orange and crazy shapes are a beautiful sight and make a perfect backdrop for great fall photos. In the kitchen, pumpkins offer a more pronounced flavour than other members of the squash family. Even though they are particularly popular in pies, cookies, and muffins, they can also be used to flavour mashed potatoes or cream-based sauces. When used in this way, the flesh of the pumpkin should be cut into cubes before sautéing them in garlic-flavoured olive oil. After simmering them

ALTHOUGH PUMPKINS ARE POPULAR FOR MAKING DELICIOUS PIES AND COOKIES, TRY THEM IN SAUCES AND PURÉES FOR EXTRA FLAVOUR. in some chicken stock, the pumpkin can then be pureed and added to favourite recipes.

Don’t forget that pumpkin seeds make a great snack, so don’t just throw them away. Simply mix them with

a bit of oil and salt and then bake them for around ten minutes in a 350° F oven. Enjoy!

Use of this amazing foam pump reduces soap usage up to 75% - unless hand washing increases because the foam is so much fun. A suction cup bottom keeps the pump in place during single-hand use and the nonaerosol pump stays clog-fee. The nozzle is easy to press down, even for little hands. A must-have for every sink in your home.

Available at Beyond the Kitchen Door Fines Herbes Blend is a classic mixture of herbs that forms a mainstay of French and Mediterranean cuisine. A delicately balanced combination of basil, chervil, tarragon, marjoram and chives, Fines Herbes Blend can be used in a wide range of savory recipes to add both exceptional taste and aromas. The chives offer a soft onion flavour and chervil gives a delicate hint of licorice/anise. The basil, tarragon and marjoram marry the chives and chervil together with a subtle sweetness. The delicate nature of these herbs means they lose their intensity quickly, so add Fines Herbes near the end of cooking, just before the dish is ready to serve. To release the bright flavours and add whispers of garden freshness to your recipe, first crush the herbs in the palms of your hands before adding to the dish. Fines Herbes is excellent in egg dishes like omelets and quiche, and also works well in cream sauces. It’s a staple for vinaigrettes and creamy salad dressings and is delicious sprinkled on top of freshly sautéed mushrooms and vegetables. It’s also a great topper for baked potatoes and adds zest to roasted or baked fish and chicken. Use the Fines Herbes to enhance the flavour of seafood chowders, soups, stews and vegetable recipes.
