Trustee raises concerns over playground maintenance BY TIMOTHY SCHAFER Times Staff

The state of the school district’s playgrounds has deteriorated to the extent that one trustee has called for a regular maintenance program to be put into place. Jenn Carter has asked School District 20 (Kootenay Columbia) to develop a regular maintenance program around its 11 district schools in order to avoid the situation that is now occurring in schools like Rossland Secondary School. Last year the Ministry of Education gave $50,000 to Rossland for a new playground apparatus, but the year-old equipment is already showing wear far beyond its years, said Carter. She said already in Rossland there is trouble with the flooring underneath the equipment: It is lifting and there is a grass growing underneath. The lack of maintenance is wearing out the equipment prematurely and it will need to be replaced long before it needs to, she told the board.

Having a mobility issue is like being a prisoner in your own home, according to Reverend Ken Siemens of the West Kootenay Chaplain. But he’s doing everything he can to prevent it with help from the All the Way Home Chaplaincy board, by helping people overcome a series of emotional and physical burdens that come from health problems. For some, the burdens meant forfeiting health treatments due to the high costs of transportation. When All The Way Home began in 2009 the organizers quickly realized that providing transportation was a huge part of helping out those in

Who ever said you can’t get something for free. On Wednesday the Trail Times will be offered free by donation as part of the ReachA-Reader program and the Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy (CBAL). It’s a day to celebrate literacy and to raise money to support a worthwhile cause: pick up a free newspaper on local newsstands, make a donation, and watch your money grow literacy levels in the region. Last year the event raised $840 in a matter of hours in Greater Trail. But the entire Reach-a-Reader campaign, which included advertisements and articles in publications throughout the region, helped raise awareness of the program throughout the Kootenay region, said Chuck Bennett, group publisher for Black Press Kootenays.

need. And when All the Way Home purchased a wheelchair accessible van that same year, the barriers for people in need began to disappear. “We’re providing assistance to people with mobility issues, principally that’s people in wheelchairs, to attend to medical appointments, dental needs and social activities,” Siemens said. “The van is really only a part of what we do, but it is certainly a big part of what we do.” But the organization needs help to continue and is calling on the community for donations to pay off the remaining $7,000 loan for the purchase of the van and make this service accessible to the people who need it. “When we first bought our van, the predecessor to this one, if you’d have asked me if there were any wheelchairs in Trail, I probably would’ve said

a few,” Siemens added. “Until you actually start meeting the people and realize that we have got a lot of people with mobility challenges. “But healthy people tend to see right past them.” During the first month of service, in August, the van gave more than 100 rides. It has been in service for two months and provides service by donation for dental appointments, eye care, medical attention and some shopping trips within Rossland, Trail, Fruitvale and Genelle. “We even have calls from the Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital to transport patients who are being discharged with no means of transport,” he said. Recently the Trail-Tadanac High School graduating classes of 1949 and 1950 rounded up a $600 donation for the charity. “We had leftover funds from the seed money at our

reunion,” Ted Heslop said. “And this seemed like a good cause. It was the right thing to do.” And the organization’s efforts haven’t gone unnoticed, another Trail man added. Sunningdale resident Steve Pershing had one leg amputated two years ago, a result of a case of gangrene spreading from his foot into his shin. Recently he has been struggling with the other leg. “Ken has been a lifesaver,” Pershing said. “For instance, I had one time that I had to get up there at six in the evening and Ken got me up there. HandyDart won’t do anything for you after 3 p.m. because they want to be back in the depot by 4 p.m. and signed out.” For more information about All The Way Home or to make a donation, visit www.atwh.com, e-mail WestKootenayChaplain@ Gmail.com or call 231-1149.

REGIONAL Ministry funded equipment FROM PAGE 1 “As long as the history of poor maintenance continues, it is worrisome that already new equipment is having problems because the grounds around them are not being maintained,” she told the board of trustees at a meeting in Blueberry last week. Although SD20 board chair Darrel Ganzert said the matter will be taken care of, the board of trustees approved a Ministry of Education cash drop of $50,000 for more playground equipment at Twin Rivers Elementary School in Castlegar. “I would imagine (maintenance) are going to take a look and have some sort of plan for maintenance,”

he said. “I’m sure there will be something come of that.” He said the “high level of concern” shown by Carter and the board would not be overlooked. The money comes as part of the Ministry of Education’s third and final phase of their $8-million playground equipment program. Phase 3 was allocated to the repair of existing playground equipment. The ministry had identified Twins Rivers as the only school eligible in SD20 for the funding. “It concerns me that we are allowing these things to be funded … but there has to be some sort of understanding that they are

THE TRAIN’S A COMIN’

going to be maintained in a safe and effective manner at the same time,” said Carter. “If we are going to accept new equipment then we need to try and take care of it the best we can, and there needs to be an understanding that that will take place. Of the $146,000 from the ministry the board approved with a bylaw, $46,000 will be going back to the Glenmerry Elementary School’s parent’s advisory committee in reimbursement for previous work, and $50,000 for the Rossland playground. The district had already drawn down the other two amounts, said Natalie Verigin, SD20 secretary treasurer.

CBAL works with all ages FROM PAGE 1 “We are not taking one penny of the money raised, and everything will go to CBAL,” he said. “We are thrilled to be able to be a partner in this initiative.” CBAL has 16 coordinators delivering services in 77 communities, said Desneiges Profili, CBAL regional program manager for the West Kootenay and Boundary, on the organization’s website. “Their work with children, adults, families and seniors to build reading, writing, numeracy, computer and workplace skills is in demand,” said Profili. “Fundraisers, such as our ReachA-Reader campaign, help support communities to meet this increasing

need.” And not only is it worthwhile, literacy is a necessary pursuit, said Ali Wassing, CBAL executive director, in a press release. “Literacy skills impact our lives and communities in ways that might surprise you,” Wassing said. “Studies show a strong correlation between high literacy levels, good health and low unemployment. Ultimately, a community is more resilient when its citizens have strong literacy skills.” As a non-profit organization designed to encourage and promote literacy, CBAL offers free workshops in Greater Trail and across the West Kootenay with courses ranging from Books for Babies to Adult Basic Computer Classes.

NELSON

Boy dies in ATV rollover THE NELSON STAR A four-year-old boy has died after an all-terrain vehicle rollover on a logging road west of Nelson about 2 p.m. Sunday. In a news release, RCMP said the 33-year-old driver and his stepson, both from Glade, were travelling on Midslope forest service road when their vehicle hit a drainage ditch. The ATV flipped over and landed on top of the two. Both were wearing helmets,

but the man suffered serious back injuries and the boy was unconscious. Police and ambulance were called and a doctor pronounced the boy dead at the scene. The BC Coroner’s Service is now investigating along with RCMP. The man was flown to hospital in Trail where it was determined that he suffered a broken lower back, broken right leg and right wrist as well as internal injuries. No names have been released.

CRANBROOK

Two charged in carjacking, shooting BY SALLY MACDONALD Cranbrook Townsman

Twenty-six-year-old Nickolas John Bullock and a 17-year-old girl, both from Port Coquitlam, have been charged over last week’s carjacking outside Creston and the later shootout with RCMP in Cranbrook. According to an RCMP press release late Thursday, Bullock is facing charges of robbery and possession of stolen property. The girl, who cannot be named because she is under 18 years old, is facing one charge of possession of stolen property. In the news release, RCMP also gave more information about OCt. 2’s dramatic events. At about 8:24 p.m. on Tuesday, October 2, the RCMP emergency 9-1-1 centre received a report of a carjacking that had occurred near Kitchener. “The victim reported to police that he had stopped to assist a man and woman who were hitchhiking,” reads the police

statement. “It is alleged that the man had been pepper sprayed and physically kicked out of his vehicle and left roadside.” The license plates and description of the stolen vehicle were relayed to Creston, Cranbrook, Kimberley and the Elk Valley. Cranbrook RCMP then set up a patrol perimeter south of Cranbrook on Highway 3. Shortly after 10 p.m., an RCMP officer spotted the stolen vehicle. He attempted to pull it over just south of the city, but the driver did not stop. “The suspects... continued into the city where they pulled into a private residential property in the area of 13th Street South and 22nd Avenue South, where the suspects were taken into custody,” reads the statement. The RCMP has not released any details about the shooting incident that occurred while the RCMP officer was attempting to

take the two suspects into custody because it is under investigation by the Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO). The newly formed IIO is called to investigate any policeinvolved incidents where a member of the public dies or is seriously harmed. The RCMP have previously said the officer discharged his weapon and the male suspect suffered non-life-threatening injuries. The female suspect and the RCMP officer were not harmed. If anyone has further information regarding this or any other crime, they can call the Cranbrook RCMP at 250489-3471 or East Kootenay Crimestoppers at 1-800-222TIPS. The pair are set to face the charges in Cranbrook Provincial Court sometime this week. Cpl. Pat Prefontaine said they could appear as early as today.

Enbridge questions foreign pipeline critics THE CANADIAN PRESS VANCOUVER - Organizations founded by an American oil baron and a Silicon Valley philanthropist are among the foreign charities being targeted by Enbridge in its battle against critics of the proposed Northern Gateway pipeline. Tens of millions of dollars have been donated to conservation groups and initiatives in B.C., for everything from Earth Day celebrations to aboriginal salmon recovery programs. It’s a point of contention for the pipeline proponent, which has asked the environmental review panel examining the Northern Gateway project to compel funding information from its critics. The panel returns to B.C. this week for final hearings on the controversial project. And it’s a point of contention for Natural Resources Minister Joe Oliver, who earlier this year decried the “foreign special interest groups” that “threaten to hijack our regulatory system to achieve their radical ideological agenda.” Specifically, Enbridge has singled out in requests submitted to the panel: - The Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, a California-based organization founded by the cofounder of Intel Corporation that focuses on conservation, scientific research and patient health. - The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, a California-based social and environmental charity founded by Hewlett-Packard co-founder William R. Hewlett. - The Rockefeller Foundation, a philanthropic venture of John D. Rockefeller Sr., the American industrialist who founded the Standard Oil Company. - Tides Canada, a Vancouverbased organization that distributes donations to initiatives on climate change, wilderness protection, marine conservation, aboriginal issues, poverty, and international development. - The Bullitt Foundation, a fund for environmental, children’s and

peace initiatives founded by Seattle philanthropist Dorothy Bullitt, founder of KING Broadcasting Co. The Bullitt Foundation has awarded almost $1 million over the past 16 years to the David Suzuki Foundation and $735,000 over 13 years to the environmental law group EcoJustice. Other foundation funding directed toward British Columbia includes: the Vancouver Aquarium Marine Science Centre (one grant worth $20,000), Tides Foundation (20 grants totalling $564,000), and the Sierra Club (9 grants worth $210,000). In August, the Moore Foundation announced $2 million over the next three years for the World Wildlife Fund Canada. Other 2012 foundation grants to be disbursed in B.C.: Simon Fraser University ($250,000 for a First Nations decision-making and governance project and $611,000 for a study of small-scale hydro projects), as well as $600,000 for Tides Canada’s Canadian freshwater alliance project and $981,000 for Tides Canada Foundation’s wild salmon ecosystem small grants fund. Several First Nations groups will also receive funds, including the First Nations Fisheries Council ($262,000), the Hartley Bay Village Council ($324,000), Coastal First Nations Turning Point Initiative Society ($314,000), and the KitasooXaiXais ($266,000). Calls to Enbridge Northern Gateway seeking comment were not returned. Ivan Thompson, program officer for the Moore Foundation’s Wild Salmon Ecosystem Initiative, suggested the funding is far from nefarious. “The reason why the Moore Foundation is particularly interested in Canada in terms of environmental conservation funding is because, essentially, salmon and marine systems are collapsing around the world and here in Canada there’s a chance to do it differently,” said Thompson, who is based in Vancouver. Enbridge is trying to undermine the credibility of its critics, he said.

Drought threatens Cowichan River THE CANADIAN PRESS DUNCAN, B.C. - The Cowichan River could run bone dry before the end of the month if rain doesn’t start falling by the bucketful, raising concerns for environmentalists, municipal officials and representatives of the nearby paper mill. The record-breaking drought could drastically impede spawning salmon runs, put the local pulp mill’s operations in jeopardy and even affect the village of Crofton’s water supply, says a local sport fisherman and longtime champion of the Cowichan river ecosystem on Vancouver Island. How the situation got to this point appears to be a combination of unusually dry weather and a water management system that has stakeholders on all sides pointing fingers. “It is truly sad that it takes a disaster to get people moving, (and) this is a disaster waiting

to happen,” said Paul Rickard, an avid sport fisherman and longtime champion of Cowichan River ecosystems. Decades ago, a weir - a kind of dam - was built where the Cowichan River flows into Cowichan Lake to meet two goals: first, to maintain the flow of the river and second, to keep sufficient water in the lake as long as possible. But as the Cowichan Watershed Board notes on its website, in the late summer and early fall, when the water levels drop, both those goals can’t be met. “Management of the weir becomes a challenging judgment call in which the lake level, discharge rate in the river, salmon priorities, and rainfall predictions are all factors which must be juggled,” the board says. A set of rules govern how much water would be released into the river from the lake. The idea is to use the lake

as a giant reservoir to collect snow melt and rain for times when the river is running low. Catalyst Paper has a license with the province to open and close the weir at certain times of the year in order to keep its Crofton pulp and paper mill operating downstream. Rickard said things went wrong this year. “Here we are in the driest fall on record and no water stored in the lake,” he said. “Now we’re facing potentially significant fish loss.” Rickard complained that local officials have bent to the will of cottagers on Cowichan Lake who don’t like high water levels because it means they lose their beaches. Brian Houle, Catalyst environment manager, said the company, too, is concerned about the rapidly drying river. “We are heading towards - and each week we’ll be closer to - a very difficult situation,” he said.

Crowds at the Canadian Museum of Flight witnessed a piece of history on Friday morning as a retired Conair Firecat Air Tanker made its final flight through Langley skies. Two fly-overs and a ceremonial water drop over Langley Regional Airport marked its last journey before the red plane was parked at the Canadian Museum of Flight. The Firecat, which was donated to the flight museum by Abbotsford-based Conair Aviation, is the greatest acquisition the centre has ever made, according to Bruce Friesen, vice president of the Canadian Museum of Flight.

Catalyst has been struggling financially in recent years and the last thing the company wants to do is be forced to suspend mill operations until there is more water available. Brennan Clarke, spokesman for the forests ministry, said the government has presented a possible solution. Catalyst holds a licence right now and could agree to change the conditions of that licence or, Clarke noted, the Cowichan Valley Regional District could take out another licence which would allow for higher water levels in the lake. But Catalyst has said it has no plans to change its licence, and the district hasn’t applied for another licence. “It’s been made abundantly clear to the Cowichan Valley Regional District that they could apply for this second licence 1/8 but 3/8 they haven’t done it,” Clarke said. “They probably have their own reasons for that.” Rob Hutchins, chairman of the regional district, said the watershed board has recommended the district apply for the licence and that will be discussed.

U.S. triples estimate of imported tainted beef THE CANADIAN PRESS EDMONTON The U.S. Food Safety Inspection Service has almost tripled its estimate of the amount of recalled beef that was imported from the XL Foods Inc. plant in Brooks, Alberta. The agency has issued a revised statement stating that an estimated 1,134,000 kilograms of beef

entered the country that could potentially be contaminated with E. coli. The previous estimate, released on September 28, said that almost 404,000 kilograms of the affected beef had entered the U.S. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency, meanwhile, added yet more items to its long list of beef products that

have been pulled from store shelves across Canada. The latest additions on Sunday affect raw beef and ready-to-eat products sold in B.C. under the Africa Trading and HanAhReum Mart brands, or sold at Urban Fare.

The number of illnesses linked to beef products from the plant stands at 10 people from three provinces. E. coli was first detected at the plant on Sept. 4, but it took 12 days for the first of numerous public alerts to be issued.

But it was never our first option. “We would go to court if we have to. But the Conservative cabinet minister in charge of the cuts wants Page to butt out. Treasury Board President Tony Clement told CBC Radio’s The House this

weekend that Page is operating outside his mandate - an argument he says he’s willing to make before the courts. “When you look at the words in his mandate - the finances, the estimates and the trends in the national economy - it’s not about money not spent, it’s about money spent, Clement told CBC. Clement says it’s the Parliamentary Budget Officer’s job to look at what the government

He said the government is accountable to Parliament through estimates, quarterly departmental reports and public accounts documents. However, Page told CTV it’s his office’s job to look at both spending and cuts. “We think we’re very clearly within our mandate. And it’s very important to look at austerity, Page said. “Sometimes what you don’t spend money on is just as important as what you spend money on.

THE CANADIAN PRESS OTTAWA, Ont. - Canada Post has finally reached a tentative agreement with its largest group of unionized workers after a bitter dispute that has dragged on for more than a year. The post office and Canadian Union of Postal Workers issued brief statements saying the deal was reached Friday, but neither side is releasing any details. A series of rotating strikes by CUPW last year prompted Canada Post to lock out some 50,000 of its employees. The Harper government responded with backto-work legislation that forced workers to accept wages that amounted to less than Canada Post’s last offer. On other issues, the law imposed a form of winner-take-all arbitration in which both the union and the post office make a final offer, one of which would be accepted. But the union twice objected to the government’s choice of an arbitrator and the issue was fought in the courts. A Canada Post spokesman says the tentative deal was reached without an arbitrator and is not an imposed settlement. “We are pleased with this milestone and now look forward to devoting our collective energies to transform the business to face digital realities, said a brief statement from Canada Post. The union said it was in the process of organizing ratification votes for the deal.

“The information we’re asking for is the information that’s actually fundamental for MPs to do their jobs.

Dix devoting energy to skills training

M

y column on skills training a couple of weeks ago gave short shrift to the NDP position: tax the banks and hand out grants for women’s studies, sociology and other worthless pursuits, while skilled jobs go begging. That’s a pretty crude caricature, so I sat down with NDP leader Adrian Dix in his legislature office last week to get a better sense of his thinking on the subject. Dix has been devoting a lot of time lately to skills training, in trades particularly. He meets frequently with business people now, and his recent speeches emphasize that every one of them talks about the growing shortage of skilled employees. Dix credits Premier Christy Clark and jobs minister Pat Bell with making some good moves recently, announcing equipment upgrades for vocational programs around

the province. He says it’s because the NDP have been “pounding away at them for eight months” about freezing advanced education spending in their March budget. Dix calls that a crucial mistake and predicts the government will reverse it soon. “So I think, if we’re going to have a mission for four years as a government, if we’re elected, this is the mission: to start to address the skills shortage,” he told me. In his speech to the recent municipal convention, and again at an NDP provincial council meeting, Dix zeroed in on B.C.’s apprenticeship system. Since the B.C. Liberals took it from trade unions and set up a Crown corporation called the Industry Training Authority in 2004, the completion rate for apprentices has fallen to 37 per cent, he said. Dix assured me he isn’t proposing to “blow up” the ITA, or hand control

TOM

FLETCHER B.C. Views back to unions. They will have “a voice,” along with business. Speaking to the NDP executive, Dix referred to Phil Hochstein, president of the non-union Independent Contractors and Businesses’ Association, as the symbol of trades training decline. Not surprisingly, Hochstein has a different take. The 37 per cent figure is misleading, Hochstein said, because under the ITA there are currently 32,000 apprentices in the system,

twice as many as when it was union controlled. Many drop out in the first year, and Alberta claims a better completion rate because they don’t start counting until the second year. And when Dix touts Alberta’s “mandatory” trade system, Hochstein said he means returning to a system where all work is restricted to journeymen or registered apprentices of that trade. “What it does is impose union jurisdiction on the training system of the entire construction industry,” Hochstein said. “So multi-skilling, multi-tasking, organizing the work in the most efficient way is blown out of the water, and it’s stuck in the old craft system of training.” The marketplace has spoken on that restrictive system, he said, and unionized construction is down to about five per cent of the market, based on payroll. Hochstein said the

NDP talks a great game about getting more young people into trades. But when unions have the upper hand, they will always favour seniority. A quota of two apprentices per journeyman means another one can’t be hired. Dix agreed with me that the public school system has over-emphasized university, to the detriment of not just industrial trades but lab techs, chefs and other skilled workers that are in short supply. As B.C. Federation of Labour president Jim Sinclair recently noted, tradesmen themselves often don’t encourage their kids, because they’ve been told all their lives that they are “tool monkeys” in a deadend job. And would NDP student grants be targeted to need? Dix’s answer was a definite maybe. Tom Fletcher is legislative reporter and columnist for Black Press.

LETTERS & OPINION LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Road maintenance suffering

CROWN POINT HOTEL

I have previously written about the state of our roads and highways, especially after my family was involved in a serious motor vehicle accident in January last year. Luckily, they walked away with minor injuries but the effects psychologically have lasted much longer. That accident could have resulted in the death of my entire family. It has changed how I view life and as a result, I am conscious of how precious life is, how important my family is and that there are no guarantees. I am also conscious that we are exposed to risks every day when we get up in the morning and step outside our doors. What I have been more aware of is how the highways are being maintained (or not), and if that is an acceptable risk, or do I continue to raise awareness and ask questions and push both the Ministry of Transportation and the highways maintenance contractor to do a better job. Some of the things that I have noticed lately that give me cause for concern are as

TUESDAY TO SATURDAY | 7AM - 10AM

follows: 1) If you have driven over the Paulson lately, you will notice that there is significant rock fall debris in the ditches. Some have been flagged since before the summer, some not flagged at all, but it is concerning that we are now heading into the winter season and the rock fall has been there since the spring. When will this be cleared? 2) There is a sinkhole just above the runaway lane on the Rossland/Trail hill that has been flagged for almost a month. This is a safety hazard for all of the driving public and again, with winter almost upon us, will this be fixed or will it be covered with snow and result in a serious accident where someone might be injured or lose their life? Maybe the entire road with slough away and it will be considered an act of God. When might we expect this area of our major highway to be repaired? 3) There has been some ditching done around the area which is great, but what is concerning is that many of the culverts in the area remain plugged with sand and debris from last year

and the ditching crews have just gone around the plugged culverts. Even I know that the run off from rain or melting snow has to go somewhere. If the culverts are plugged, the water will end up going where it is not supposed to but then again, this might be considered another act of God. Who is ensuring that the work taxpayers are paying for is being done to standard? In the past, when I have voiced my concerns with the Ministry of Transportation and also Emcon, I have received less that favourable treatment (sometimes actual ridicule bordering on abuse), so now I am committed to airing my concerns in public. I don’t think I am the only one out there who expects a better standard of maintenance. Don’t panic, just cook your meat An editorial from the Kamloops Daily News Setting aside the larger issues of why it took government so long to inform the public about the contaminated meat from XL Foods, there’s another area that could be better explained to the public. Many people really don’t have a handle on food safety, particularly when it comes to meat. Who hasn’t peered in a container of leftovers and done the sniff test to decide if it’s desirable, instead of labelling it by date and throwing it out once it’s past its prime? E. coli, the bacteria at the root of the recall, naturally occurs in the gastrointestinal tract of animals. It can be transmitted to humans through direct contact with the animal, by ingesting contaminated meat or via contact

with the fecal matter of a sick person. Meat can become contaminated during the slaughter process and as hamburger can be made from parts of different animals, it has a greater risk for contamination. E. coli, which has no taste or smell, can make people gut-wrenchingly sick - symptoms include vomiting, fever, severe stomach cramps, and bloody or watery diarrhea. Symptoms can show up within a day to 10 days and generally go away on their own within a week. For some, the elderly and children under five in particular, it can be more serious, leading to kidney failure, seizures, stroke and even death. But thorough cooking can kill the bacteria, so even if hamburger had E. coli on it, ensuring it is cooked thor-

oughly (to a temperature of 160 F, according to Health Canada) will render it safe to eat. And use a meat thermometer; checking to see if the burger is still pink is not good enough. But beef is not the only meat that can be contaminated, E. coli can also be found in pork, lamb and poultry. So apply the same common sense food-safety practices when cooking your Thanksgiving turkey this holiday weekend - wash your hands and kitchen areas after handling meat so there is no cross-contamination, use a meat thermometer to check that it’s cooked and store the food in the fridge promptly after. There are an estimated 13 million cases of foodborne illness every year. Avoid becoming one of them.

YOGI BERRA AND DON LARSEN

Duo reunites on perfect game anniversary THE ASSOCIATED PRESS LITTLE FALLS, N.J. - Don Larsen has two grandchildren, one in college and the other a freshman in high school. He wants to make sure they’re taken care of. He wants to make sure they complete their educations. So, to help that cause, the former Yankee has decided to auction off the uniform he wore 56 years ago Monday, when he authored a perfect game in the World Series. “I’ve been thinking about it for a bit,” Larsen said. “I’m not getting any younger and I don’t know how much longer I’ll be around. I want to make sure they can both go to college, which isn’t cheap these days. “So, I figured it was the right time.” On the anniversary of Larsen’s greatest day as a pitcher, Steiner Sports Memorabilia announced it will auction off the uniform that Larsen, 82, wore. And he was joined at the press conference by his catcher, Yogi Berra, at his museum and learning centre at Montclair

State University. Larsen, who has kept the jersey in a closet in Idaho, was asked if he could fathom that his uniform could draw more in an auction than he made in his career as a Major Leaguer. “It wouldn’t take much,” Larsen said. “Because I didn’t make much.” A Babe Ruth jersey went for $4.4 million last year, so Steiner anticipates such a historic relic to draw at least seven figures. “I had only worn it three times, but we were entitled to keep it,” Larsen said. “I kept in my closet and it was in great condition.” There was only one downside. Larsen’s hat fell off when Berra jumped into his arms. It was never recovered. “I was told it was picked up by some guy in New Jersey, then supposedly donated to the (Baseball) Hall of Fame,” Larsen said. Fifty-six years to the day Monday, Larsen walked into Yankee Stadium for Game 5 of the World Series against

the Brooklyn Dodgers, having no idea he was about to create one of the most memorable moments in baseball history. “It was a beautiful day and I felt great,” Larsen said. “I didn’t know whether or not I was going to pitch. I came to the stadium early and as usual, Moose Skowron and Hank Bauer were there early ahead of me. I got to my locker and saw a ball in my shoe. I guess (third base coach) Frankie Crosetti was told to put it there.” At that point, Larsen knew he was tabbed by manager Casey Stengel to start Game 5 with the series tied. “I looked at the ball and took a big swallow,” Larsen said. “I said to myself, ‘Don’t screw this one up.’ I’m just glad Casey had the faith in me to give me the ball.” Larsen certainly did nothing wrong that fateful day, throwing the only perfect game in the World Series, helping the Yankees capture the 1956 World Series title. After the seven-game win, he earned the series MVP.

“He didn’t shake me off once,” Berra said. “He was throwing pretty hard and had a good breaking ball that day. Everything was working for him.” Both pitcher and catcher remember it vividly, of course. Such an unforgettable moment on such an unforgettable day. The sentimentality, for sure, remains. “Yogi and I are the only ones left from that game,” Larsen said. “I’ll never forget the day when I came to the Yankees. One of the things I knew, was that I was going to pitch to one of the greatest catchers ever. Yogi means as much to me today as he did then. As time goes on, it hasn’t been forgotten and it will never be forgotten even after we’re gone.” Berra said that he never dreamed that memorabilia from his playing days would become so valuable. “If I knew then what I know now,” he said, “I would have saved all my uniforms instead of giving them back. “And I had a lot of them.”

TRAIL SMOKE EATERS

Road losses mount BY TIMES STAFF

The Trail Smoke Eaters’ road woes continue as the team dropped a pair of games to West Kelowna and Penticton on the weekend. The Smokies are a perfect 4-0 at home this season, but have dropped six of seven games on the road, including a 6-0 loss to the Warriors Friday and a 7-2 drubbing by the Vees Saturday. Louie Nanne netted a hat trick for Penticton while Wade Murphy had a four-assist night and former Smokie Sam Mellor picked up a pair of helpers to pace the Vees to the win. Murphy sits in second place in league scoring with 17 points, while Penticton’s Mellor and Michael Rebry are tied for third with 15 points

apiece. The Smokies’ leading scorer, Brent Baltus, opened the scoring at 1:58 of the first period, but it was all Penticton after that. Penticton built up a 7-1 lead until late in the third when Mitch Foyle scored his first of the season, after a nice set up from former Midget Ice teammates Jake Lucchini and Jesse Knowler. Braden Krogfross got the start in goal for Trail and stopped 26 of 33 shots on net, while Nic Reynard blocked 21 of 23 for the Vees. The Vees lead the Interior Conference with a 9-1 record. In Trail’s loss Friday, the Warriors struck twice in each period, firing 35 shots at Trail goalie Lyndon Stanwood while Tyler Biggs turned aside 20

for his second shut out of the season. Brent Lashuk and Matt Anholt led the way for the Warriors each netting a goal and two assists, while Josh Monk had three assists. Trail was not without its chances, Baltus was robbed twice in front of the net, and Biggs stole a couple of nice opportunities from Jesse Knowler and Luke Sandler. However, the Smokies could not get anything going on special teams as Trail went 0-for-6 on the power play. The Smoke Eaters host the Coquitlam Express Friday night at 7:30 p.m. at the Cominco Arena, and are at home again on Sunday against the Merritt Centennials at 5 p.m.

Hawks overcome Heat BY TIMES STAFF

The Beaver Valley Nitehawks won an important four points on the weekend to stay in touch with the division leading Castlegar Rebels. The Hawks beat the Grand Forks Border Bruins 8-2 Saturday, and eked out a 3-2 over-time win Friday night against the Chase Heat to sit one point back of Castlegar in the Neil Murdoch Division after the Rebels doused the Chase Heat 6-1 on Saturday. Kurt Black had a break out game for the Hawks, netting a hat trick and adding an assist against the Bruins to lead the charge. Ryan Edwards also pitched in with a four point night, two goals and two assists, and Nick Perez continues his torrid pace with a goal and two helpers. Perez and Edwards lead the team in scoring with 12 points each, while Black moves into third spot with six goals and two assists. Beaver Valley jumped out into a 4-1 first period lead, and never looked back, as it pumped 44 shots

at the Grand Forks goal including 35 in the final two periods for its fifth win of the season. On Friday, Chase would get all its scoring during an eight-second span at the end of the first period to go up 2-0 on a pair of two-on-ones that left goalie Zach Perehudoff stranded and with little chance. But the Hawks fought back, when Nick Perez scored from the point five minutes into the second, and Russell Mortlock tied the game with 1:48 to go in the middle frame. Perehudoff came up big in the third period, as did the Heat’s goalie Jacob Mattes who turned aside 34 of 36 shots in regulation, and stymied the Hawks offence time and time again. But with a minute to go in the first overtime frame, Dallas Calvin saucered a breakaway pass to a streaking Edwards, who wristed a quick shot by the blocker of Mattes for the OT win. The Nitehawks are back at home on Saturday to host the Kamloops Storm at 7:30 p.m.

The amalgamation of the Beaver Valley Minor Hockey Association (BVMHA) and Rossland-Trail Minor Hockey Association (RTMHA) is swiftly moving forward as teams of the now Greater Trail Minor Hockey Association (GTMHA) take the ice for GTMHA’s inaugural season. The new era of GTMHA had a lot on its plate to prepare for the 2012-13 season, including fusing two administrations into one executive, revamping its policy and procedural’s manual, and receiving its final approval from BC Hockey and West Kootenay minor hockey. “It’s going extremely well, the two executives come together, it’s a great group of people working together, lots more hands to share the load and it’s going very well,” said director of amalgamation Murray McConnachie. The amalgamation project plan was laid out in detail approximately three years ago by the Futures Committee including a new charter, timeline and procedure to smoothe the way for the new executive, led by president Mark Ballarin. “There’s been a couple little hiccups, but it’s like getting married there’s always something you don’t expect, but nothing major that wasn’t overcome easily,” said McConnachie. The association also had to make an initial investment into new jerseys and logos, but support from sponsors such as McDonalds has minimized expenditures. “Every year we buy four or five sets (of jerseys)

as an ongoing expense, so it’s not like we’re going out and buying everyone new jerseys. We’re doing a lot of re-cresting, and let them roll over. After four years we’ll have them all redone.” Early numbers indicate a promising start to the season with four Bantam house teams now playing in GTMHA as opposed to one last season. The Pee Wees will once again ice a Tier 2-and-3 teams, and with enough players signed up in the younger leagues, such as junior and senior novice, the kids will remain playing close to home, as per Bylaw 60. According to the director, the association has also addressed the sharing of arenas, scheduling games evenly between Beaver Valley Arena, Cominco Arena, and Rossland Arena. “I know at the Bantam House we have four team so what we did was make two Trail-Rossland, and two Trail-Beaver Valley teams, and that way we can kind of keep the Beaver Valley-Trail kids going in one direction and the Rossland-Trail kids going in the other direction to minimize parent costs.” After two failed attempts at amalgamation, BVMHA voted 87 per cent in favour of joining forces with RTMHA in May, and Rossland-Trail reaffirmed its previous vote a year earlier, with an 88 per cent “Yes” vote on June 27.

Vonn looks to race in men’s downhill THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

GENEVA - The United States ski team says it hasn’t had any “formal discussion yet about the possibility of Lindsey Vonn entering a men’s World Cup downhill next month. Vonn, the women’s Olympic downhill champion, has written the International Ski Federation to ask whether she can challenge the men on Nov. 24 in Lake Louise, Alberta. Vonn has earned nine of her 26 World Cup downhill victories at the Canadian track, which stages

women’s races the following weekend. The U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association says “we clearly have great respect for Lindsey, her accomplishments in the sport and her desire to seek this new challenge. But we have not had any formal discussion yet between Lindsey and FIS. FIS secretary general Sarah Lewis tells The Associated Press the governing body can’t make a decision on the matter until the team submits a formal request.

SAN FRANCISCO - Dusty Baker walked down the hallway in his former ballpark to cheers from Giants fans. He smiled, waved hello, offered handshakes, high-fives and hugs - even a few hang loose signs. Baker is still beloved in the Bay Area 10 years after managing the Giants within six outs of a World Series title before falling short. That didn’t change even after his Cincinnati Reds routed San Francisco 9-0 on Sunday night for a commanding 2-0 lead in their NL division series. This time, it’s the Reds riding some serious post-season momentum. Two years ago, the Giants made an improbable run to the city’s first World Series championship and Cincinnati got swept out of the first round by the Phillies. “You’re not comfortable at all until it’s over, Baker said. “We’ve been there before. It’s hard to take the last breath out

of anything. Game 3 in the best-of-five series is today at Great American Ball Park. Homer Bailey (13-10), who pitched a no-hitter Sept. 28 at Pittsburgh, takes the mound as the Reds try to close out the series against Giants right-hander Ryan Vogelsong (14-9). The Reds headed home to Ohio on quite a roll, thanks to a bunch of memorable firsts. Bronson Arroyo won his first game in seven tries at San Francisco. Ryan Ludwick hit his first post-season home run, while Ryan Hanigan had his first playoff RBI. More than anything on this night, it was Arroyo’s turn to celebrate on what he figured to be a fun flight back to Cincinnati. “We couldn’t put ourselves in a better situation, he said. “It doesn’t mean you’re going to close it out, but for us personally, I know the fans are going to be as jacked as they have ever been in that ballpark since it has been built, which is going to be

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS WASHINGTON - There were all the trappings of a high-octane presidential debate: the over-thetop declarations, the pre-practiced zingers and the schmaltzy appeals to America’s truest values. But the presidential candidates were nowhere to be found. In their place Saturday were two celebrity gabbers who have claimed their stakes to the polar opposite ends of the political spectrum: Bill O’Reilly and Jon Stewart. The political oddcouple came to Washington ready to tangle in an event mockingly dubbed “The Rumble in the AirConditioned Auditorium.” Choice words not suitable for the faint of heart dotted the 90-minute exchange between the Fox News anchor and the star of Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show,” who bantered aggressively but goodnaturedly over birth control, President George W. Bush and the so-called “War on Christmas.” Appearing wholly presidential in dark jackets and face makeup under a sign reading “Yum, this banner tastes like freedom,” the two quickly turned to talk of government spending and the 47 per cent of Americans that Republican Mitt Romney said in a video are dependent on government. Stewart, defending government involvement in health care and social programs, said the U.S. has always been an entitlement nation. “We are a people that went to another country, saw other people on it and said, ‘Yea, we want that,” Stewart said. Asked who he’d like to see as president, O’Reilly dead-panned: “I’d have to say Clint Eastwood.” “Well why don’t we ask him,” said Stewart, mocking the Hollywood actor’s widely panned speech in August at the Republican National Convention by getting out of his chair and staring at it while the crowd erupted in laughter. “The display that you saw tonight is why America is America. Robust, creative, no holds barred,” O’Reilly told reporters after the debate. “You can call it whatever you want, but you wouldn’t see this in a lot of other countries.” Organizers said about 1,500 people attended the event, but the main audience was intended to be online, where the event was live-streamed for $4.95. On Twitter, viewers complained they missed the event when the video servers crashed.

National Depression Screening Day is Oct. 11 MAILBOX

Marcy Sugar & Kathy Mitchell

yourself off from social situations all feed depression. If you can get out of bed and get out the door -- if only for a little while -- that’s a major thing. National Depression Screening Day is Thursday, October 11. I recently found out about it from a friend. I wish I’d known about it years ago and taken a screening. Readers can go to helpYourselfHelpOthers.org and find a nearby screening location or take a free, anonymous screening online. They also can find out what to do next. I’m alive today because I managed to get help in time, but

Our favorite Japanese place has a tip jar at the sushi bar. I feel a tip should be left for both the server and the chef, but I don’t know how to divide it. I was told that the sushi chefs keep their tips and the others are split. I’d appreciate some guidance. -- Liz Dear Liz: At a buffet, etiquette experts recommend a 10 percent tip (on the pretax amount) because the server takes drink orders and clears the table. If you sit at a sushi bar where the food is served directly to you, tip the chef on the food and the server on your drinks. If the server brings you the food, tip the server. Tip jars, whether at a sushi bar or a coffee shop, do not obligate you to leave anything. However, if the service (or sushi) was exceptional or complicated, or if you are a regular customer, you may wish to do so. Dear Annie: I

would like to respond to “The Drunk’s Wife.” My 67-year-old husband came home many nights so drunk he could barely stand up. After putting up with this for 40 years, I finally had enough. I told him that I loved

him, but the next time it happened, I’d be gone. Two weeks later, he came home toasted, and I packed a bag and left. He called all night, begging me to come back. The following day, we talked. I said I’d return, but there

would be no more second chances. He knew I meant it. That was two years ago. He hasn’t been drunk since, and our marriage is better than ever. -- Stuck to My Guns

Sudoku is a number-placing puzzle based on a 9x9 grid with several given numbers. The object is to place the numbers 1 to 9 in the empty squares so that each row, each column and each 3x3 box contains the same number only once. ANNIE’S

I lost years of real living before I understood that I had depression. I strongly urge anyone reading this who even suspects they might have depression to do a screening. Sincerely -- Mike Stephens Dear Mike: Thank you for sharing your story. Depression affects millions of Americans from all walks of life and all demographics. National Depression Screening Day can be enormously helpful for those who are concerned about depression. We hope our readers will check HelpYourself HelpOthers.org to find out about a screening. Dear Annie: What do I tip when eating at a buffet where the server takes the drink orders but does nothing else? What about at a Japanese restaurant where the server takes our orders and serves the meal, but the sushi chef prepares the food?

Dear Annie: I want to share my story of depression -- and hope -- so that it might help others. I’m nearly 50 now, but only recently did I recognize the depression that has plagued my life. I had the symptoms for decades: bursts of anger, loss of appetite, lack of interest in work and activities, avoiding people, constantly thinking about death. A few years ago, it hit me hard. For weeks, I couldn’t leave my bed, and suicidal thoughts filled my mind. I was a “dead man walking.” My emotions were burned away, and I saw no point in living. Finally, I began seeing a therapist on a weekly basis. Progress was slow, but each bit of relief was a stepping-stone out of the darkness. I learned that you have to look after yourself. Overworking, not eating right, lack of exercise, not enough sunshine and cutting

That use will continue. “Protecting this land in the valley bottom is vitally important for the longterm prospects of the South Selkirk grizzly bear population, said Nancy Newhouse, Canadian Rockies program manager for the NCC. “These lands are also incredibly important for agriculture. between the Selkirk and Purcell mountain ranges. It is also home to the only known breeding population of the endangered northern leopard frog, which has been a key focus of the Creston Valley Wildlife Management Area for years. The project is named Frog-Bear Conservation Area in honour of two of the key species that will benefit from its conservation. The total cost of the project is $1.1 million, which includes an endowment fund to enable longterm stewardship of the properties. The Yellowstone to Yukon Conservation Initiative (Y2Y) played a critical role in this project, Newhouse said.
