Significant upgrades were completed over the summer to that the pioneering technology has been difficult to set up from the start. “We’ve put in the changes we planned on doing,” says Davies, “but we’re not necessarily satisfied yet.” According to Davies, although the system is currently working to control emissions it is not yet fully optimized. “The systems are running,” Davies explained, “but they’re still not running as good as we’d like them to. They’re costing us a lot more money than we’d like.”
A big expense in running the emissions system is the cost of the chemicals required to maintain clean system fluids. If the system gets dirty then pumps may fail. The pumps are in a sequence so that the failure of one pump doesn’t affect the operation of the whole, but a failed pump still needs to be replaced. Davies expected problems like this with a new system. “There’s growing pains with the system,” Davies said, “but we’re moving forward with it.”

In an article published Sept. 27 in the Georgia Straight, a Vancouver weekly newspaper, John Furlong is accused of abusing eight former students of the old Immaculata School in Burns Lake. The Immaculata School was a Roman Catholic school in Burns Lake that ran from the 1950s until it was shut down in 1986. The Georgia Straight newspaper reports that he worked there as missionary and ran physical-education classes in 1969. In a statement issued Sept. 27 on his website, Furlong denies any wrongdoing, "As you are aware I have been accused of physical abuse and apparently within the last hour, sexual abuse. I want you to know I categorically deny absolutely any wrongdoing." He continued to say that the Georgia Straight newspaper made no attempt to contact him regarding the accusations. Furlong's statement also included a vague reference to an earlier extortion attempt regarding the accusations. His statement reads, "[O]n the very first occasion that this was brought to
my attention prior to the Olympics [2010] I was advised that for a payment it could be made to go away." At the time he reported this to the police. None of the accusations have been proven, and they do not stem from a police investigation. The Lake Babine Nation issued a press release, calling on the RCMP to conduct a thorough and timely investigation into allegations. “Lake Babine appreciates what John Furlong has done for British Columbia and Canada through the Vancouver 2010 Games, but at the same time, it strongly believes there are serious longstanding issues from the past that must be addressed.” These allegations come to light as the town of Burns Lake and the area’s six First Nations work to overcome a difficult year that began with the Babine Forest Products mill explosion in January of this year. Chief Wilf Adam of the Lake Babine Nation said that, “The sooner they get to the bottom of this the better.” The RCMP have issued a statement that they are investigating the allegations.

New pipeline to feed LNG exports Two months after opening its newest natural gas processing plant near Dawson Creek, Spectra Energy has announced a partnership that will more than double its B.C. capacity with a large-scale pipeline to Prince Rupert. The pipeline would connect vast shale gas resources in the Montney formation near Fort St. John and the Liard, Horn River and Cordova Embayment shales near Fort Nelson.

In recent months, there’s been plenty of economic discussion surrounding our Gateway Project. As a British Columbian, you want to know: What’s in it for B.C.? From one British Columbian to another, I feel strongly that you’ve got every right to know. And a recent independent report makes it abundantly clear that Gateway will provide significant economic benefits for our province. The Canadian Energy Research Institute is an independent, notfor-profit research establishment, and it recently released a report on the economic impact of exporting our oil/resources to countries in Asia. In pretty clear terms, CERI’s calculations suggest that we will be Canada’s biggest beneficiary of the Northern Gateway pipeline through the next 25 years — in key categories such as gross domestic product (GDP) impact, employment impact, employee compensation, and tax revenue generation. According to the report, over the next quarter-century, construction and operation of the Northern Gateway pipeline itself will create an additional $8.9 billion in GDP

to the Canadian economy — with $4.7 billion of that amount, or 53 per cent, heading to B.C. Our province also stands to benefit the most in terms of employment impact, since 70,000 person-years of construction and operations employment will be created in British Columbia, compared to 37,000 for Alberta and 8,000 in Ontario. In addition, we would see 55 per cent of the total $5.1 billion in Canada-wide Northern Gateway employee compensation, or just under $2.9 billion. I’m proud of the economic value that Gateway will bring to Canada. I believe our province should receive its fair share. And as these reputable numbers clearly demonstrate, we will.

Aerial fertilization underway in Lakes District and area Aerial fertilization is part of provincial effort to increase timber supply WALTER STRONG Fertilizer is coming down from above in southern areas of the Lakes forest district as part of the province’s larger forest fertilization strategy. Ground crews are present to ensure that the fertilizer is not being spread outside of proscribed areas. A local rancher, Annie Van Metre of the Double Box Ranch, met with ministry representatives and a range person to discuss concerns she had regarding the timing of the application. Van Metre was concerned that there might be too much fertilizer spread in open range or that there would be spills when loading the helicopter’s aerial hopper. Her cattle are free range and according to Van Metre, would find the fertilizer appetizing. “They [the Ministry]

The week that was Last Thursday a Vancouver weekly paper published a story claiming that eight sworn affidavits of physical abuse at a former Burns Lake school reveal a dark chapter in John Furlong’s hidden past. The school has been closed since 1986, but because it was a Catholic school, media gathered on the doorstep of the local Catholic church to gather footage and get some quotes on record before updating their websites. Before the day was out John Furlong had vehemently denied the allegations, expressed his intent to sue the journalist and the newspaper involved, and every major paper and news service in the province had filed stories with updates. The Globe and Mail had managed to determine, before noon last Friday no less, that Burns Lake was a town divided by these allegations. I was surprised to read that Burns Lake was already divided by the news of the allegations. I’ve only lived here for a few weeks and can’t claim to have my finger on the pulse of the district, but ‘divided’ isn’t a word that comes to mind. By Sunday we had learned that the journalist is going to counter-sue Furlong for attacking her journalistic integrity. And now silence, which is to be expected because the matter has been passed on to the RCMP and the courts. Laura Robinson, the journalist involved, is a respected writer and author and the Georgia Straight a credible paper with a large circulation. It’s hard to imagine that the testimony of the former students could be a fabrication, and it’s difficult to understand why Furlong apparently left his time in Burns Lake out of his official biography. But the story, if anyone is being honest, is confined to Robinson’s investigative work and that’s where we have to assume that

the announced RCMP investigation will begin. Following this story from a Burns Lake newsroom was very interesting. Here was a major local story breaking that involved Burns Lake and community, but the story broke in Vancouver, was gobbled up by the major provincial and national media, and was virtually over before the weekend was out. The major news networks had nothing to do with this story, even though they took it over and cannibalized it. Part of me is concerned that I was so out of the loop on a story so close to where I now call home. The local paper was the last to know, shame on me. Or maybe that’s just a bruised ego talking. Either way it’s only a footnote to this serious story. This is a big story, and not just because of the seriousness of the allegations involved and the way they have affected members of the local community. It’s also noteworthy because it comes from outside the large media outlets. The Black Press chain of newspapers (which owns the Lakes District News) has 48 newspapers in the B.C. interior from Cranbrook to Prince Rupert. We exist outside of the sphere of influence of the larger news organizations and are sometimes the last to know of a local story. The attitude seems to be, if you want to get your message out call CBC in Prince George, or better yet, Vancouver. As last week’s events have shown, that’s not necessarily the case anymore. Weekly newspapers maintain an online presence and can break news instantaneously online as quickly as any larger organization. What matters most is the reporter on the ground doing the work, and the trust that people put in that writer to get their message out in a fair and professional manner.

The Union of B.C. Municipalities convention is the political event of the year for B.C. party leaders, especially heading into a provincial election. Up first was NDP leader Adrian Dix, who drew a large crowd of local politicians last week for the traditional early-morning spot that follows a long evening of receptions. In contrast to his debut last year, a typical litany of political attacks on the B.C. Liberals, Dix declared he would take the high road. And perhaps mindful of Carole James’ downfall after her content-free speech to the 2010 UBCM convention, Dix set out policies. He told delegates an NDP government would restore local authority over Metro Vancouver transit (no more toothless “mayor’s council”) and mountain resorts (no more Jumbo ski resort permits issued over local objections). Dix would also let communities decide if they want public-private partnerships for large construction projects. (Federal Heritage Minister James Moore later noted that if communities or provinces wish to decline federal funds due to this ideology, they are free to do so.) Then Dix accused the B.C. Liberals of cutting forest inventory spending by 77 per cent over the last decade, meaning decisions like rebuilding the Burns Lake mill are being made “in the dark” for the first time in a century. That’s a damning charge, so I checked it against forest ministry budget records. As with all government programs, accounting changes can give a misleading appearance of large cuts or increases from year to year. And indeed forest inventory spending has bounced around during the B.C. Liberal term. The budget for forest inventory staffing and operation was about $8 million in 2001-02, rising as high as $15 million and falling to a low of $5.1 million in recession-hit 2009-10. The estimate for the current fiscal year is $9.7 million, an increase to try to catch up with the pine beetle disaster. Crown forest inventory has indeed fallen behind due to rapid shifts caused by unprecedented insect and fire damage. But has spending been slashed as Dix claims? No. It has increased. Next up was Premier Christy Clark, in full campaign mode. In the Gordon Campbell tradition, she brought the goodies out in her speech to close the convention. More than $200 million has been scraped together to “accelerate” capital projects at schools, hospitals and other facilities across the province. These projects were already on the books, but they’ve been moved up for obvious political purposes. Or at least the announcements will be moved up. Four-laning of the last narrow stretches of the Trans-Canada Highway east of Kamloops will continue over 10 years. This is a federalprovincial project that will eventually be finished regardless of who is governing in Victoria or Ottawa. It includes some of the most staggeringly expensive road building in Canada, in the Kicking Horse Pass, a short section that could require two tunnels and up to 12 more bridges. Clark also announced a long-range plan to replace the George Massey tunnel under the Fraser River. It will likely be a bridge, because the tunnel is a bottleneck not only for Highway 99, but also for large ships going up-river. This is another project that will proceed eventually, and there is no specific financial commitment yet. I haven’t found any outright false claims in Clark’s presentation, just the kind of creative accounting and blacktop politics familiar to B.C. voters. As always, I’m pleased to hear from people with specific corrections. For now, call it a tie. Neither speech represents a proud moment for our provincial leadership.

Sale of Sheraton keeps mill running in Burns Lake Next public meeting of CMSL board of directors not yet announced WALTER STRONG In a statement provided on behalf of the Burns Lake Community Forest Ltd. (Comfor), Quinten Beach, Comfor Management Services Ltd. (CMSL) president, presented a summary of the decision process behind the recent sale of Sheraton Holdings Ltd. to Tahtsa Timber Ltd. “The board had been meeting monthly,” said Beach, “and more frequently over the summer, with quorum of at least four directors.” Beach, also a Village of Burns Lake councillor, is the representative of the Village of Burns Lake at the board meetings. The remainder of the six member board is made up of Rosanne Murray, Wesley Sam, Reg Ogen, Hereditary Chief Jeff Brown and Susan Schienbein. Chief Albert Gerow, Chief Karen Ogen and David Dewitt were available as alternative directors. “The sale of Sheraton was not advertised,” said Beach. “The board was approached by the purchaser [Tahtsa Timber Ltd.] with an offer. After due consideration and negotiation, the board determined that it was in the best interests of Comfor and the community to proceed with the sale.” According to the CMSL Comfor policy manual, the sale of Sheraton Holdings Ltd. would have been exempt from the Disposition of Redundant Assets policy which deals with the sale of surplus assets. Police have collected over 750 DNA samples ...From page 6 him or traveled with him – are urged to call 1-877-543-4822. Shinkaruk said RCMP have three or four other strong suspects in the B.C. murders or disappearances after eliminating more than 80 per cent of the 1,400 persons of interest they’ve examined. Police have taken more than 750 DNA samples of B.C. men as part of the investiga-
tion. Shinkaruk said northern B.C. does not have an unusual number of such murders despite the high profile around the Highway of Tears, a name families and advocates tagged to Highway 16 West to push police for more action. One of the loudest critics of the probe, Gladys Radek, said blaming a dead serial killer strikes her as a bit too convenient for police.

Featuring the spirit of the local people Early screening can mean the difference between cure and hospice care Burns Lake unit of the Canadian Cancer Society brings awareness to women’s health issues WALTER STRONG October is Women’s Cancer Awareness Month, a campaign organized by the CCS to raise the awareness of early detection, screening and healthy living for the prevention and cure of women’s cancers. It was a routine screening that caught Rhoda Anderson’s cancer early enough for her to be cured. “I was diagnosed 10 years ago when I went to my doctor for a regular screening test,” Anderson said. “I can’t stress enough how important it is to keep in touch with your body and if you have anything that isn’t normal go to your doctor for a check up.” Rhoda Anderson is the president of the Lakes District chapter of the CCS. She has been volunteering with the society for over 25 years, ever since she lost her father to cancer. There was a lot of cancer in Anderson’s family. “I knew that there was a real possibility [of cancer] for myself, but you just don’t think that it will happen to you,” Anderson explains. It’s that sense of denial, whether it stems from fear or a lack of awareness, that the CCS is hoping to combat this month. “We’re really promoting early detection and screen-
ing tests during this month,” Anderson said. “See your doctor if you have anything that you feel might be suspicious.” The Canadian Cancer Society divides its resources between research, prevention, and the support of cancer patients and their families. “Sometimes it’s harder on the family than it is on the cancer patient,” says Anderson, which is why the CCS provides a lot of different resources for patient support. “People can come into the local branch and talk,” says Anderson. “Everything is confidential.” A person looking for support can also call the two telephone help lines available. The Cancer Information Service provides confidential information about all types of cancer, cancer treatments and help available within the community. “It’s a very good line,” Rhoda says, “I used it myself when I had cancer and I found it very helpful.” The Cancer Connection is anther telephone help line available that puts people in touch with others who are facing the same kinds of struggle. “The Cancer Connection line will link you up with someone around your same age and with the same type of cancer,” said Ander-
son. The CCS is mostly volunteer driven with 20 members in the local Lakes District unit. The local unit is part of the larger Northern region of the CCS with headquarters in Prince George. “The Northern region covers an area larger than France,” Anderson explains to illustrate the scale of the volunteer efforts involved. Donations to the CCS are a little down this year, according to Rhoda. “We didn’t have our relay for life this year,” Anderson explains in accounting for the decrease in funds. “There weren’t enough volunteers available this year.” Although there are plenty of volunteers for events through out the year, it is difficult to find people that are able to give the year-round commitment it takes to make a large event like the relay for life happen. “It takes a lot of young people to organize the event and it’s hard to get people that are available for a year round commitment,” said Anderson. The local unit of the CCS can accept donations at their storefront beside Remax on Hwy. 16. They also run a small gift shop with a used book section. All proceeds go to the CCS.

HOROSCOPES Week of October 3rd - October 9th LIBRA - Sept 23/Oct 23 Libra, you are ready to take a leap of faith, but make sure your parachute is on before you do so. Sometimes you tend to err on the side of risky. SCORPIO - Oct 24/Nov 22 Scorpio, sometimes you take on too much. But you have a funny way of making it all work out. You will find this to be the case with a situation that presents itself this week. SAGITTARIUS - Nov 23/Dec 21Sagittarius, if you keep pushing someone to their limits you may not be happy with the results. It might be a better plan to go with a softer method of inspiration. CAPRICORN - Dec 22/Jan 20 Capricorn, you are ready for a change, but haven’t zeroed in on just what to do as of yet. A deep conversation later this week just might reveal all of the answers.
ARIES - Mar 21/Apr 20 Someone is not telling you the entire story, Aries. However, you will find a way to fill in the missing details. What you learn will come as a big surprise. TAURUS - Apr 21/May 21 Taurus, reach out to friends and family members for some support. A helping hand always can lift the spirits, and those closest to you will be happy to help. GEMINI - May 22/Jun 21 Gemini, you are strong and determined, so the obstacles that arise this week will be no match for you. Just keep up the positive thinking and you will prevail. CANCER - Jun 22/Jul 22 Cancer, this week is not the time to harbor secrets. It’s a good policy to always be open and honest with the people with whom you interact on a regular basis. LEO - Jul 23/Aug 23 Leo, allow a friend to be the center of attention so he or she can enjoy his or her moments in the sun at an upcoming social event. Your magnetism can be addicting.

The developer behind the massively popular indie game Minecraft has decided not to certify his award winning game for Microsoft’s new Windows 8 operating system. Markus “Notch” Persson, has expressed concerns about the openness of Microsoft’s newest operating system to indie game developers and he’s not the only one. Brad Wardell, CEO of software company Stardock, has openly criticized Win8’s usability. Valve’s Gabe Newell out it a little more frankly when he pronounced that Windows 8 will be a “catastrophe” for PC gaming. The biggest complaint from small game developers so far is that games not certified by Microsoft cannot appear on the new Windows 8 Metro interface. So far Microsoft has not commented on the recent criticism, but hopefully they will take it constructively and make a few changes.
