Winter is a beautiful time to experience Canada. Unfortunately, it can also be a dangerous time, particularly when you are driving. Icy roads can be treacherous, and a dead battery can leave you stranded. “Keeping your car in top form is especially important in winter,” said Jeff Burke, president and CEO at Western Financial Group, an organization with services to protect individuals and families in this part of Canada. “Inspect your vehicle thoroughly before heading out onto the road, and make sure you have adequate insurance coverage.” Car Care Canada’s website shares these winter maintenance tips: • Check the battery: If it is four years old or older, have it checked at a service station to make sure it will start in bitter temperatures. • Check the fluids: Top up power-steering, brake and transmission fluid; oil; and antifreeze/coolant. Antifreeze and coolant should be flushed and refilled every two years or 50,000 kilometres. Replace your windshield fluid with one specially formulated to cut through ice and snow. • Consider winter-weight oil: Consult your owner’s manual to see if a winter weight oil is recommended for cold months, and remember to change your oil every 5,000 kilometres. • Check internal functions: This would include your heater, defroster, lights and windshield wipers. Replace your wiper blades every six months, and consider the added power of winter blades. • Change to snow tires: Traction is essential when you are driving on snow and ice. Winter tires offer traction, peace of mind and — often — a discount on your car-insurance premium. • Repair cracks or dings in your windshield: Freezing temperatures can turn small nicks into gaping cracks that destroy your windshield. Have them repaired before it’s too late. • Keep your gas tank at least half full: A fuller tank resists moisture/ice formation inside your gas line. • Be well-equipped: Keep these items in your vehicle in case of emergency: snow brush/ice scraper, booster cables, flashlight, first-aid kit, blanket, extra clothes, bottled water, snacks and necessary medications. newscanada.com

More Toyotas on way to dealerships for 2013 Toyota has regained its No. 1 spot in the world after suffering some losses due to the tsunami on Japanese shores last year. With this return to full strength, we can expect the brand to be more aggressive than ever over the next few years. The bigger Avalon sedan was recently unveiled with a totally new and more modern design. It is expected to keep its V-6 engine and frontwheel drive. The recently redone Camry is back in its many configurations, including the popular hybrid-electric sedan. A station-wagon-like version of the car, known
as the Venza, is also a favourite and is available with a four-cylinder or V-6 engine with a front- or allwheel drive powertrain. Cadillac joins automakers bouncing back Many American brands are bouncing back in the market after some slow years. Among them is Cadillac, one of the most-famous brands in the industry. That company has had to fend off many new competitors in its segment in the past years but now, Cadillac is ready to step back up to the podium with some interesting new models. Indeed, Cadillac is counting on its great CTS line of cars to help it defend its title in the industry. The car is back in 2013 as a sedan, coupe, or wagon with rear or all-wheel drive. It is powered by a potent V-6 or an incredible 556-horsepower V-8. Yet, there are two big news stories at Cadillac this year: The first one is the replacement of the more traditional DTS by a new XTS, a front-wheel or all-wheel drive sedan almost as big as the DTS but much more modern. The car will start off with a 318-horsepower V-6, although Cadillac could eventually introduce different
mechanical configurations to what will always be a more economical car than the V-8 powered DTS. The other big story is that of the ATS, a smaller car aimed at competitors like the BMW 3 Series and first offered as a sedan with rear or all-wheel drive. The ATS will be powered by a base four-
cylinder engine, a turbocharged four, or a 3.6-litre V-6. Cadillac still has a few SUVs left in its lineup, including the popular SRX compact crossover, now available with a more powerful but still more economical V-6 engine. And, the traditional Escalades are still there, including the base model available with hybrid-electric configuration, the longer ESV, and the versatile EXT. The Cadillac XTS is all-new for 2013
Hyundai redesigns its Santa Fe, drops the Vera Cruz model It was forgivable, but let’s admit Hyundai’s everpopular Santa Fe SUV was starting to get a bit grey at the temples. Despite its excellent reputation, the time had come for its maker to do a redesign that would help it stay competitive with all the new products hitting the market. Fear not, though: The Santa Fe has not changed dramatically. It remains a just-rightsized SUV that will satisfy consumers. What’s great news for 2013 is there will be two

new mid-sized sedans arriving on the market. Not to be left behind, Nissan reacted rapidly and is now offering a redesigned Altima for 2013. Fans need not fear: The Altima has not been completely remodeled. It still remains a midsized sedan that can carry up to five people on board. What’s great is that it now bears a new and modern design that corresponds to today’s expectations. Mechanically speaking, the Altima is a front-wheeldrive that relies upon the well-known 2.5-litre, four-
Rims need maintenance Most modern vehicles come with superb rims. Like the rest of the car, they require a bit of maintenance. Unfortunately, they are too often neglected, especially if you have the habit of washing your car at a car wash. The rotating brushes and the high pressure jets don’t necessarily provide an in-depth cleaning for wheels. This is where special products and special brushes will be helpful, especially in the spring. In fact, winter leaves traces of salt in the spokes of the rim and only conscientious human intervention can really clean it. And, even if your small economical car isn’t equipped with nice rims, it will still have painted steel rims that will be damaged in the long run. These wheels can be easily repainted with spray cans that you will find at car dealers or auto parts stores. Before repainting, you must sand the wheels, clean them, and perhaps even straighten out the edges (where there is major damage, consult an expert in rim restoration). Tape well around the tire if the rim isn’t removed. Don’t believe that paint won’t stick to tires — it will. If your nice, aluminum-base rims are damaged, it’s best to consult a company with expertise in straightening a bent wheel or repairing a broken rim. But, the damage should be relatively moderate. There’s no miracle that can fix wheels when a whole flange is missing.

Dodge adds Dart to its compact-sedan lineup Don’t go looking for the Caliber anymore. Dodge has cancelled that model and replaced it with a new compact car bearing an older name. Do you remember the legendary Dart from the 1960s? The new Dart is the first vehicle to be built with input from both Fiat and Chrysler, both now managed by the same company. The Dart is also known as the Alfa-Romeo Giuletta in Europe.

More Jeeps are coming your way in 2013 The Jeep brand needs no introduction. Not only is the make legendary but the vehicles are, too, especially the classic Wrangler. It too is powered by a thrifty four-cylinder engine with manual or CVT automatic transmission and the possibility of all-wheel drive capable of vigorous off-roading.

Ram changes how we look at pickups There is some interesting news in the pickup truck segment and Ram is responsible for all that change. Although the 2013 Ram 1500 seems to look a lot like last year’s model, it is hiding important modifications under its aggressivelooking body. To start off, the Ram 1500 is available with a new 3.6-litre Pentastar V-6 that develops 307 horsepower. The 5.7-litre Hemi V-8 is still offered as an optional engine. The new V-6 comes with an all-new eightspeed automatic trans-

In a similar twist, a new pneumatic suspension is also available; it lowers the truck at highway speeds to increase aerodynamic effects. The interior of the new Ram 1500 has been revised for more luxury. Note that the more robust 2500 and 3500 versions are carry-overs for 2013.

Mazda and SkyActiv work well together Japanese automaker Mazda has begun applying its SkyActiv technology to some of its vehicles — and the results are already showing up as successful. The slightly revised Mazda3 compact car, the most-popular product of the brand, has included SkyActiv technology in some of its models, mostly within the engine compartment. That means there is now a regular Mazda3, a Mazda3 with SkyActiv technology and a sporty Mazdaspeed3 in the company’s catalogue. But, the Mazda vehicle that really embodies all of the SkyActiv technology is the CX-5 mini-SUV, with a thrifty four-cylinder engine, manual or automatic transmission, and a whole new structure designed with SkyActiv technology in mind. The next Mazda product to get SkyActiv technology will be the
upcoming Mazda6 mid-sized sedan, which is completely redesigned. Already unveiled as a prototype, the Mazda6 will feature SkyActiv engines and transmissions, most likely including a diesel-powered four-cylinder engine. Meanwhile, Mazda dealers will continue to offer the sub-compact Mazda2 and the one and only real sports car on the market, the MX-5, also known as the Miata. Other than the compact CX-5 mentioned earlier, Mazda also offers two more SUVs on the Canadian market: The four-cylinder-powered CX-7 and the more impressive V-6-powered CX-9.
Expect the upcoming Mazda6 to look like this prototype.

Ford’s Fusion new for 2013 Take a good look at the new Fusion. This car belongs to one of the biggest segments on the market, that of the mid-sized sedan. Many of Ford’s competitors have also unveiled new versions of their popular sedans but, for the most part, they have done it very carefully. Ford, on the other hand, has been bold and has come up with a much different design for its Fusion, even though the previous version was already popular. The new Fusion will feature some of the mostunusual mechanics ever offered by Ford. To begin, the new model will no longer be available with a V-6 engine. Ford is introducing the front-wheel -drive Fusion with one of two EcoBoost four-cylinder engines. The first engine option is the modest, yet powerful, 1.6-litre power plant

that develops 170 horsepower. If more power is needed, Ford offers a bigger 2.0-litre, EcoBoost fourcylinder engine whose 240 horsepower is way better than the old V-6 but less thirsty. The old hybrid-powered version is back but this time, in the new body. It retains its 2.5-litre, four-cylinder engine combined with an electric motor. Ford has still more plans for its Fusion, including an upcoming plug-in hybrid version and an all-electric model.
Fuel-saving driving tips The price of fuel has risen to a point that everyone with a budget is concerned. And, though many people will opt for a smaller vehicle or a less-thirsty engine the next time they buy a car or a truck, it is not a good idea to exchange a perfectly good running vehicle for a smaller car. If you let your older vehicle go at a lower price than it is worth to buy a new vehicle that will burn less gasoline, think again and get down to the pocket calculator. • Lowering your speed will surely help. It might take a few minutes more to get to your destination but you will surely save a lot. • Do not treat your vehicle like a dragster on street corners. When the light turns green, go easy on the gas pedal. Jackrabbit starts will gobble up a lot of fuel. • Empty that trunk. All that useless extra weight hurts your vehicle’s fuel economy. • Make sure you’ve kept up with required maintenance. Is your vehicle in good shape? Does the engine need a tune-up? Are the wheels well aligned? • And, most importantly, are your tires at the right air pressure? Some smaller cars can be real gas guzzlers if they are driven hard while some bigger vehicles can wind up with a great fuel economy if they are driven with care.

Arctic Cat is in the habit of taking the market by storm and this year is certainly no exception. The manufacturer from Minnesota has just unveiled a new high performance side-by-side called the Wildcat 1000i H.O. This Wildcat model comes with a V-twin 95l cc engine that is bolted to an exoskeleton frame inspired by the Baja 1000 race. With 43.1 centimetres of front-suspension travel and 45.7 centimetres of rear-suspension travel, this vehicle offers the longest suspension travel in its category. The 66-centimtre-high Duro Kaden tires increase ground clearance to 33 centimetres. The tilt steering wheel is combined with power steering and the DEL lighting system emphasizes the futuristic design of the bodywork.

The half doors increase safety and comfort. Other models within the Prowler range of all-purpose side-by-sides include the XTZ 1000i, XTX 700i, and the XT 500i. Among traditional ATV models, new GT versions are being launched this year under the designation of 1000i, 550i and 450i. These versions can be distinguished from the LTD utility models by their more-
stylized aluminum rims and metallic paint. The 350 model is a great and inexpensive way for ATV newcomers to get started. This model is replacing the 360 SE, just as the new 425i and 425i SE are taking over from the old 450 and 450 LTD. Honda overhauls Foreman
Polaris finetunes its ATV lineup The Polaris line is the most-varied in the ATV industry. There are almost 33 models of all types, divided between five categories. The most-popular quad is the Sportsman, which includes at least 10 models ranging in cubic capacity from 498 to 850. Various changes have been introduced this year, including improvements to the 850-cc H.O. engine, allowing a 10 per cent increase in power. What’s more, all the Sportsmans offer a clever 29.5litre storage compartment that has been integrated into the bodywork just in front of the handlebars. Polaris also offers the Scrambler 500 4x4, Trail Boss 330, Trail Blazer 330, and Phoenix 200 for newcomers to the quad category. These entry range models
are now available in blue. Apart from the traditional 4x4 quads, Polaris is also offering an ATV with sixwheel drive, called the Big Boss 6x6 800. Its tilting cargo box can transport a load weighing up to 363 kilograms. The Ranger model in the full-size sideby-side category is destined for lots of hard work, while the RZR and RZR-S compact models have been designed for racing. In order to increase the durability of these vehicles, engineers have made the skid plate 33 percent thicker. Improvements have also been made to the cockpit fit and finish to reduce water and dust infiltration. The engine of the Sportsman 850 H.O. is very powerful.

Incredible array from Chevrolet coming for 2013 Just look at Chevolet. It is almost hard to believe the number of different cars the brand is offering customers in 2013, some of them are totally new. The smallest Chevrolet in the lineup is the practical little Spark minicar, which should please more than one city driver. If you want a slightly bigger car that is still great for city driving and can also eat up highway roads with ease, Chevrolet offers the ever
popular Sonic. This small car is available with a hatchback roof or as a sedan. Then, there is Chevrolet’s smashing success, the Cruze, a fantastic compact sedan that has pleased many of its customers with its great fuel economy. Speaking of fuel economy, have you had a look at the unique Volt electric Chevy? The Malibu is another of Chevrolet’s newest hits for 2013. This mid-sized sedan is, like so many of its com-
petitors, available only with a four-cylinder engine. But, fear not, the Malibu’s engines are powerful enough to rival so many of the older V-6s. The Eco model with eAssist should yield great fuel economy. But the good news doesn’t stop there. Chevrolet has also redesigned its mighty Impala full-sized sedan. Consider nitrogen for your tires For more than a century, car and truck tires have relied upon air to be efficient. But, for years, air has given trouble to car owners. Granted, some tire companies have embarked upon special programs to create tires that will still run for a few kilometres if air was taken out by a puncture or any other incident. But, though the systems were invented more than a decade ago, it seems there are few vehicles equipped for such tires, let alone such a situation as a flat tire. Nowadays, more and more serious companies are getting into the nitrogen business to fill up modern tires.
Why nitrogen? Simply because this inert gas can replace air in tires and still avoid quite a few inconveniences regularly encountered with air. Nitrogen molecules are bigger than air molecules and do not escape from tires like air does. On the other hand, nitrogen does not have the tendency to heat up and cause some tire destruction like air, mostly seen on truck tires. According to specialists, nitrogen does contribute to fuel economy. Already, airlines are using nitrogen in big airplanes for more safety and reliability. Many trucking businesses do the same. Word is out some major racing teams in NASCAR are using nitrogen in their racing cars. So, why is it taking so much time to get in customers’ tires? Simply because consumers will have to buy it and filling stations have yet to be set up across the country. Nonetheless, nitrogen can help you save fuel and, with the upcoming advent of tirepressure monitoring systems being made mandatory in
the coming years, dryer gas in tires will be less harmful than humid air to the sensors.

surprise In America, Ford has teamed up with its European and Asian counterparts to create some of the most remarkable “international” vehicles available around the world, including the peppy little Fiesta, the highly acclaimed Focus (soon available with a three-cylinder turbocharged engine, the very sporty ST, as well as an electric version), the all-new totally redesigned Fusion, the mighty Taurus (now available with a startlingly powerful four-cylinder EcoBoost engine), and its sporty SHO model. Not to be forgotten is the almighty Mustang, available as a coupe or a convertible with a V-6 or a V-8, including the most powerful V-8 ever produced (662 horse-

But, in the case of this brand, one of those products happens to be within one of the most-disputed segments — that of the mid-sized sedan. Nissan’s new Altima sedan has been completely redesigned for 2013, although it retains its familiar look. But, fear not, the Japanese manufacturer has preserved its road-tested technology under the hood with the economical fourcylinder engine combined with a revised CVT automatic transmission and frontwheel drive. The optional V-6 is still available. By the way, the coupe version of the Altima will be carried over for the next year. The sporty 370Z was also redesigned, although only slightly, for the next season. Nissan dealers will still sell the carriedover Sentra, which will soon be redesigned,
as well as the sedan and hatchback Versa and the uniquely designed Cube. The all-electric Leaf is back, as is the more luxurious Maxima sedan. If you like sports cars, you’ll find the above-mentioned redesigned 370Z as a coupe or a roadster and the almighty GT-R at the same dealership. As far as light trucks are concerned, expect to see the return of the Quest minivan, the Xterra and Armada SUVs and the carried-over Frontier and Titan pick-ups. Let’s not forget the smaller Rogue and the popular Murano CUVs. The big news at Nissan will be the introduction of the redesigned Pathfinder as a more car-like SUV. Some Nissan dealers will be able to offer the NV and NV200 commercial vans to their business customers. Many Nissan dealerships are combined with the luxury Infiniti brand, which features the all-new JX SUV in its lineup.

Buick has returned to its former glory Buick is one of America’s first-ever brands of great cars. Used to start up the almighty General Motors company, with time and daunting numbers of competitors the brand became virtually anonymous. That is, until the great looking Enclave CUV showed up a few years ago. The Enclave, slightly revised for 2013, continues to be popular but it is not alone anymore. Indeed, many other new Buicks have shown up in the meantime, and they are all spectacular. The latest is the yet-tobe-officially-released Encore, a mini-CUV that looks very much like a Buick but that has a practical size for city driving.
The Regal GS is Buick’s sportiest sedan.
Other exciting cars offered by your Buick dealer include the LaCrosse, which has become the brand’s biggest car since the Lucerne was abandoned. The LaCrosse can be powered by a mighty V-6 engine or by the eAssisted 2.4-litre, four-cylinder engine that delivers some 182 horsepower. Buick also has two smaller cars in its line-up, including the great-looking Regal. Similar to the incredible Opel sedan, it is powered by the same eAssisted 2.4-litre, four-cylinder engine or a sporty 2.0-litre, turbocharged four-cylinder engine that can give 220 or 270 horsepower. A standard shift transmission is available on the sportier Buicks, including the GS model. Lastly, the smallest Buick is the all-new Verano, based on the Cruze and powered by the 2.4 or 2.0-turbo four-cylinder engines. Stay tuned, though, because there might be more small Buicks coming down the pipe!
Keep your vehicle well-stocked for winter Before winter arrives with guns a-blazing and snow a-blowing, now is the time to ensure your car is stocked up with a few key accessories. They could come in handy should your car break down or get caught in a snowstorm. Keeping a blanket inside the car might seem a bit much now but, should your car get caught in a ditch — or heavens forbid, run out of gas in an isolated area — you’ll be glad to have it. Along the same lines, keep a candle and a few matches in the glove compartment. This simple accessory can provide some
much-needed heat in the event of a breakdown or prolonged stop. Of course, caution should be exercised so that the small flame doesn’t turn into a roaring fire. Your glove compartment should also have a flashlight (with full charged batteries, of course). If you already have a flashlight in your car, replace the batteries before winter arrives. Although you don’t want too much weight in your trunk, you should at least have certain accessories and tools that could prove to be indispensable in the colder months. A small, lightweight plastic shovel will help get you out of a jam. A small bag of sand or abrasive (but not salt), can help you find traction on ice. Other drivers prefer to place asphalt roofing shingles under their tires to get a grip on ice. Alternatively, you can purchase traction aides; some are available in lightweight plastic. A thick, strong rope can also come in

handy should you need to be towed. If you have doubts about the strength of your engine battery, jumper cables should also have a spot in your trunk.

Sadly, there are not many affordable sports cars left on the market nowadays. That might explain why Scion, one of Toyota’s livelier brands, is offering what it considers to be an affordable sports car, the FR-S. Designed in co-operation with its most-recent business
partner, Subaru, the FR-S is intended to attract younger buyers. Consequently, it is being offered at a reasonable price. The FR-S is based on the configuration of a frontengine, rear-wheel-drive sports coupe. Power comes from Subaru’s newest 2.0-litre,
flat-four engine that develops some 200 horsepower. It is coupled with a sixspeed manual or automatic transmission that transmits power to the rear wheels.

Car accessories — useful or useless? Many people like to personalize their vehicle. They then choose to buy accessories that will either decorate or equip their vehicle. But, up to what point are accessories useful and where do you get them? Accessories could be useful if they have a purpose like, for example, a good roof rack or headlamp and grille protectors. They can also be as simple as good floor mats or a bicycle rack. No matter what you are looking for, be sure you get good quality products. The first place to look is, naturally, the dealership. Most brands have a special catalogue of parts and accessories specifically designed for your vehicle. It means there was some form of engineering involved and that fit and finish is almost guaranteed. Installation can be easy and they will come with a certain warranty. When purchased with a new car, these accessories can be dealer-installed, added to the final bill and be part of the financing. In the case of aftermarket parts, be sure, once again, you get good quality parts.
In most cases, they will fit your vehicle pretty well. But, in the case of so-called universal parts, expect to do some fitting work. Hyundai predicting success in 2013
The mid-sized sedan segment of the market will be busy in the next few years, thanks to all the new cars showing up. Among the new products is the Chevrolet Malibu, which has been redesigned for 2013. The new front-wheel drive Malibu will only be powered by four-cylinder engines, starting with an new 2.5-litre, four-cylinder engine mated with a sixspeed automatic transmission. In the Eco version, the buyer will find the 2.4 litre EcoTech engine with e-assist, which means the engine will stop completely when
