Kia Sorento proves that affordable doesn’t have to mean cheap Al Beeber Lethbridge Herald Canadian Press
LETHBRIDGE, Alta. — Sporty, stylish and spacious, the 2013 Kia Sorento may well be one of the most versatile family haulers in the business. And it’s certainly one of the best values with the top-line SX only costing $43,045 for a mid-sized hauler with three rows of seats and loaded with every bell and whistle a buyer may want. Today’s Kia is a far different company than it was just more than a decade ago. Its cars and SUVs are becoming renowned for quality and design that even the most picky auto critics are raving about. The transformation of Kia is nothing short of astounding which explains why so many more of its nameplates are on city streets. Kia is proving that affordable doesn’t have to mean cheap. And all of its vehicles show that being affordable doesn’t mean sacrificing comfort because of budget. Six models are available in the Sorento line starting with the LX, powered by a 2.4-litre inline four-cylinder, 191-horsepower engine mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. For a starting MSRP of $26,895 even base models feature anti-lock brakes, hill start control, traction control, electronic stability control, sideimpact airbags, rollover
2013 Kia Sorento
prevention, Sirius Satellite radio, Bluetooth, steeringwheel mounted audio controls, heated front seats, fog lights and a telescoping steering wheel. Yes, that’s the base model! Moving up the ladder, Kia adds other goodies including dual-zone climate control, leather seats, allwheel-drive, a Smart Key push button ignition, auto dimming rearview mirror with compass, eight-way power driver’s seat, heated steering wheel and a 3.5-litre DOHC V6 engine that cranks out 276 horsepower
and still delivers fuel economy of 25 mpg city and 34 mpg highway for a starting MSRP of $38,795 in the EX-V6 Luxury model. The black beauty tester has all those features plus third row seating with rear heat and air conditioning controls, LED rear combination lamps, a sport grille, 18-inch chrome wheels, chrome muffler tips, alloy sport pedals, sport bumpers and carbon fibre patterned inserts. Like the EX-V6 Luxury model, it also has a ventilated driver’s seat with two
memory settings and a premium 10-speaker audio system with subwoofer and amplifier. Add onto that a navigation system with rearview camera, panoramic sunroof and automatically folding side mirrors when the Sorento is in reverse, and you have a luxury hauler at an affordable price. The Sorento SX also has Kia’s voice-activated UVO ‘infotainment’ system that includes an in-dash hard-drive and is programmed to recognize two voice profiles. This piece of technology is not only sim-
DID
ple to learn and use, it’s exceptionally handy by allowing drivers to focus on the road ahead. Buyers who have never driven a Kia will find the Sorento a revelation, for me, the 2013 version of this crossover is an evolution of a product Kia has been improving for years. Roomy, quiet and comfortable with a spacious middle row bench seat, the Sorento is a place a family will enjoy spending time in. Middle row passengers have an ample 37.6 inches of legroom while the third row
has 31.3 which should still be sufficient for many adults. Cargo capacity with the two rear rows of seats folded is 72.5 cubic feet. Interior appointments are not only modern and stylish but they seem substantial. Soft-touch surfaces and rich textures abound in the Sorento, which has plenty of interior storage space and abundant headroom, even with the two-panel sunroof that extends over the rear passenger area. That V6 engine will pull up to 3,500 lbs. and it pulls hard. With
248 lb. ft. of torque, it practically jumps from a standing start. An ECO indicator will remind drivers when they’re in the zone for maximum fuel economy, a zone which can be easily maintained at highway cruising speed. With a large greenhouse and big side mirrors, visibility is superb. A rearview camera and those folding side mirrors make backing up into tight spots a snap. A tight turning radius makes the Sorento easy to park in the city while its fuel economy makes it practical for commuting. On the highway, the Sorento has a hushed interior and a smooth ride. The instrument panel has large, legible gauges and controls for the UVO are clearly marked. With a high level of luxury equipment and a respectable price tag, the SX version of the Sorento is not only a cost-conscious alternative to other luxury haulers, but with Kia’s improved reliability and close attention to detail, it’s a smart alternative. The Sorento is, according to Kia, a broad-shouldered expression of Kia’s new design language, blending emotion and sophistication...Long wide and low, the Sorento offers a Europeaninspired design that is sure to attract attention. I’ll buy that. And I’m betting many others will, too.
YOU KNOW?
A new era in kids’ car seats at hand Metro Creative
Space is often at a premium when transporting children in a car. Safety seats tend to be cumbersome and take up a lot of the seat room in a vehicle. In most areas, law mandates some sort of safety
seat is necessary until a child is 8 or 9 years old and meets a certain weight maximum. That can mean many years of squeezing the kids into the car, or missing out on carpool opportunities due to safety seats. But a new category
of inflatable safety seats could change the way many drivers view car and booster seats. Products like GoBooster(R) and BubbleBum(R) were the invention of innovators in Europe who have now
brought their creations to North America. There are also many other brands still being produced in Europe, including the Luftikid(R). Inflatable booster seats are lightweight and durable. They often weigh less than 2
pounds. Plus, they inflate and deflate quickly, making these seats the ultimate in portable options. There’s no need to worry about safety, either. In ordered to be sold in the United States and Canada, any type of child safety
seat must be rigorously crash tested to comply with strict vehicle safety standards. With a smaller profile, these seats can also save room in a vehicle, preventing the need to upsize to a larger truck or van.

Get ready for cars that listen, talk and act like a smartphone Michael Oliveira Canadian Press
DEARBORN, Mich. — Don’t expect to converse with your car quite like David Hasselhoff and KITT did in the ‘80s TV classic “Knight Rider,” but voice recognition is one of the big looming trends in the automobile industry. For years already, some drivers who seek out the latest and greatest in technology have been talking to their cars when they want to listen to
music, turn up the air conditioner or get directions. No need to look away from the road or blindly reach for a knob or button, just speak a command aloud and the car obeys. Voice recognition and other high-tech features are expected to become far more mainstream in the months and years ahead, as automakers race to outdo each other and tap into consumer demand for
an app-inspired, always-connected lifestyle on the road. CD players have been replaced by hard drives that can store tens of thousands of MP3s, or drivers can connect a smartphone and use its data connection to stream music via the Internet. Dedicated GPS navigation systems are being phased out in favour of multi-function digital panels that look like a smartphone or tablet homescreen, populated
with a long list of apps. “Automakers are trying to replicate that smartphone/touchscreen experience that people are used to and like,” says industry analyst and consultant Doug Newcomb. “Car buyers really want this, that’s why automakers are doing it, technology really helps them sell cars.” Perhaps there was no clearer sign that companies are serious about competing to
NEW!
develop the coolest, most advanced in-car technology than an Apple announcement in June. The tech giant revealed it’s working with nine automakers to integrate its popular voice-recognition tool Siri into vehicles. Meanwhile, BMW and Honda are among the car manufacturers that are releasing new in-car technology in Canada this fall. And at the forefront of the trend has been Ford, one of the more aggressive companies
in delivering in-car voice technology to the mass market with its Sync product, which has already been around for about five years. With Sync, drivers can press a button on the steering wheel and voice their desire to place a phone call, control the stereo, make their vehicle warmer or cooler, or get directions. Ford claims the system recognizes 10,000 different commands — although there’s no
master list available to consumers so that’s difficult to verify. “Our world is changing,” Bill Ford, Ford’s chairman, said at a recent press event in Dearborn, Mich. “We’ve got over four million vehicles with Sync on the road today and what’s cool is we have an open platform, so developers are developing apps for Sync. And we love that, that’s why we did it.” See SMART, Page 5

AUTOMOTION - CAR CARE
Smart cars coming
Continued from Page 4 Among those apps available for Sync in the U.S. are the audio streaming services Pandora, MOG and Slacker Radio, a program to listen to tweets posted to Twitter, and another that gives allergy sufferers an update on pollen levels in the local area. Critics, however, have noted that Sync’s ability to understand strings of spoken words is nowhere near as robust as Siri’s. Drivers must learn how to speak to the Sync system, which often doesn’t respond to natural speech and instead needs to hear a sequence of spoken commands to complete a task. If your wording is a little off, you’ll be prompted to try again. And don’t even think of asking jokey questions like you can with Siri. “It’s getting better but it’s still not there, it’s still all over the map,” says Newcomb. “They’re still in that learning phase, a growing pains phase.” The market leader in voice technology is N u a n c e Communications, which powers Ford’s Sync. Gary Clayton, chief creative officer for Nuance, says the technology is constantly evolving and becoming more intelligent. As of now, most voice recognition systems need to be prompted before they’ll listen for user commands. But eventually, the technology will always be listening and will be able to recognize and distinguish between different voices. “It’s coming but that’s a very, very complex (problem),” Clayton explains. “There are so many fundamental things that have to be dealt with.... It’s things like: who else is in the car, what else is being said ... all kinds of spurious things are coming
in from the radio, from other people. “We have to continually poll the incoming audio to understand who is speaking, but with biometric verification — it hears this voice, it knows that voice — it (will eventually) automatically pay attention to that voice.” Another major incar technology player behind the scenes is Ottawa-based QNX, which is owned by Research in Motion. RIM purchased QNX in 2010 and took advantage of its software expertise to help build its upcoming BlackBerry 10 mobile operating system. QNX has also developed software for nuclear power plants; coal, iron, copper, and gold mines; steam and gas turbines; HVAC systems for big box stores; and sorting equipment used by the U.S. Postal Service. QNX’s reputation for developing software with rock-solid stability has won it a number of contracts to provide technology for automakers, including Audi, BMW, Chrysler, General Motors, Hyundai and Toyota, said product marketing manager Andy Gryc. “Car companies generally tend to be pretty brand sensitive, nobody wants to get a ‘blue screen of death’ or pull over and have to reboot their car, so that’s actually really helped in terms of our ability to service the market and we’re continuing to build on that.” Gryc assesses the current state of voice technology as a “mixed bag” but says the technology coming down the pipe is truly impressive — although it may take a few years until it hits the mass market. “Most consumers view (today’s voice technology) as kind of a gimmicky thing because it is sort of like, ‘Well, do you really want to do some of those things with
voice?’ Clearly some things are very natural to do with voice, like navigation is one that’s very, very clear that’s a good use case,” he says. The technology that’s about two or three years out will really wow consumers, he says, as opposed to simply being seen as “kinda neat” today. “It’ll certainly take a couple of years just to get through the automotive production life cycle. Even if automakers snapped their fingers and said today, ‘I want to build a system that’s just like Siri,’ the technology exists to do it but it’s just that they’d have to go through the process of building automotive-grade hardware. It’s not acceptable to just take a tablet and put it into the dash.” One of the challenges for automakers is in making sure that its technology ages well over the years and is built so it can be upgraded with software. Hardware upgrades are not practical, at least at this point, Gryc adds. “Swappable chips is a lot more complicated in a car environment just because of a lot of the restrictions you need to take into account for vibration — or ‘shake, rattle and roll,’ as they call it — and temperature sensitivities,” he says. “Most of the car companies have not been looking at that as a solution.” Ford has used software updates to add new features and address problems and complaints. Ford previously had major issues with the touchscreen side of its technology, which caused frustrating system crashes. “Ford kind of got penalized by being a pioneer,” Newcomb says. “No one’s really figured this out yet, it’s going to take two or three years before this really shakes out.”

‘Quantum of Solace’ car to be auctioned for charity Associated Press
LONDON — For sale: used sports car, one debonair but dangerous owner. An Aston Martin V12 DBS coupe which featured in the James Bond film “Quantum of Solace” is the top attraction at a charity auction marking the 50th anniversary of “Dr. No,” the first 007 film, Christie’s auctioneers said Thursday. The car, a black 2008 model, is expected to sell for at least 100,000 pounds (US$160,000) at an invitation-only auction on Oct. 5. Proceeds will benefit Barnardo’s, a British children’s charity. Nine other items, including sunglasses worn by Daniel Craig in “Quantum of Solace,” will also be offered Oct. 5 in support of other charities. Christie’s said 40 items will be offered through an online auction from Sept. 28 to Oct. 8 to benefit UNICEF. Many of the items were donated by EON

Car horns getting new materials, updates as global markets demand Dee-Ann Durbin Canadian Press
Cars have gotten a lot more advanced in the last few decades, but at least one part — the humble car horn— has remained virtually untouched. Until now. As carmakers sell more vehicles globally, they’re changing horns to comply with various international noise laws. They’re using different materials to save weight and improve fuel economy. And they’re making horns more resilient for markets such as India, where horns are used much more frequently than in the United States. Cars have had horns since the early 1900s, when the distinct ``ahoo-gah’’ of the Ford Model T first won America’s heart. Horns are designed a little differently these days, but the principle is the same: Electrical current flows through a
copper coil in the horn, making a magnetic field. The field makes a flat, circular diaphragm inside the horn oscillate, and the oscillation makes the horn’s sound. Horns may play one sound or may come in pairs to create the mellow chord that’s most familiar to U.S. and European buyers. Car companies used to offer different horns depending on the vehicle. In the 1960s and ‘70s, for example, Cadillacs had optional horns that played a C and D-note combination, rather than the usual A and F-note one. But to save money, car companies now buy generic horns from third-party suppliers that can be used across their lineups. Even when they get generic horns, carmakers still play a big role in determining how the horn will sound. Victor Rangel, Ford Motor Co.’s engineer
for global traffic and security horns, finds the best location for the horn in each vehicle and figures out how to secure it. The placement of the horn and the brackets that hold it have a significant effect on the sound, he said. ``We look for the right sound for every vehicle ... kind of like an orchestra conductor, directing a really small wind section,’’ Rangel said. Rangel’s job has gotten more complicated as Ford has introduced vehicles that will be sold worldwide, like the subcompact Fiesta. Now he has to consider horn noise regulations in various countries to ensure that Ford’s horns can be used in as many markets as possible. Earlier this summer, for example, Sri Lanka determined that horn noise levels should not exceed 105 decibels at a distance of 2 metres
and 93 decibels at 7 metres. U.S. horns are typically 110 decibels. The United States has no specific standard, but there are some state and local laws governing horn noise. Emerging markets like India are also forcing horn design changes because drivers use their horns more often in heavily congested cities. Wong said GM now uses tungsten instead of steel for the diaphragm because it lasts longer. Ford is getting ready to introduce a horn that will hold up better even if it’s used a lot or if the car is driven over bumpy roads. Right now, Rangel said, car owners in Asia often replace their horns as part of their regular maintenance because they get worn out. Horn design is impacted by the U.S. market, too. Wong said GM recently changed the copper wire in its
horns to lighter aluminum, which slightly improves fuel economy. Jason Wong, General Motors Co.’s lead global engineer for horns, said we’re moving toward a world in which car horns will sound more similar. Until recently, cars sold in China and India often used disc horns, which have a sharper, more metallic sound, because they’re smaller and fit better in the cars sold in those markets. But as companies bring out newer, larger models, they’re transitioning to trumpet horns, which play the mellower chords familiar to Western ears. Chinese customers are receptive to the change, he said. ``Generally speaking, people want the loudest, best-sounding horn they can have, regardless of the region,’’ he said.
Incentive program reaches $1 million mark as latest eligible vehicle becomes available Submitted
Richmond, BC — British Columbia’s first CEV for BC (Clean Energy Vehicles for British Columbia) Point of Sale Incentive program has reached a major milestone, now having provided more than $1 Million in incentives to British Columbians switching to clean energy vehicles since coming into effect in December 2011. The CEV for BC Program, administered by the New Car Dealers Association of BC (NCDABC) on behalf of the provincial government, provides up to $5,000 off of the pre-tax sticker price per eligible clean energy vehicle. $1 Million in incentives is equal to 200 clean energy vehicles now on BC roads.
There are 17 vehicles eligible for the incentive program, including the latest addition to the list, the 2012 Ford Focus Electric. The first Focus Electric to be sold in BC was recently delivered to a customer in Fort St. John. The zero-emission, batterypowered compact electric reaches a top speed of 135 km/h. A total of 23kWh of energy is stored in a battery pack located under and behind the rear seat. The Chevrolet Volt, Nissan Leaf and Mitsubishi iMiev are the top three selling CEVs in the province. “Moving forward we expect to see even more interest in the program as more eligible vehicles arrive in BC, additional charging
infrastructure is deployed, and awareness of the incentives continues to grow,” says Blair Qualey, President and CEO of the New Car Dealers Association of BC. “There is a definite interest in these vehicles as over 73% of the 968 people surveyed by our team this year indicated that they are considering a clean energy vehicle for their next purchase.” For more information on the CEV for BC program visit www.CEVforBC.ca.
