BUILDING BRIDGES – BRINGING COMMUNITIES TOGETHER B y M u s l e h H a k k i , Fo u n d e r, A b b y Fe s t On Sept. 15, we all have the opportunity to celebrate our differences. It’s a chance to learn about different cultures, what sets us apart and what draws us together. The fifth annual AbbyFest celebration is set to take place at the Ag-Rec Building. The theme for the festival is “Building Bridges – Bringing Communties Together.” People come in all shapes and sizes. Some are tall or short and some are in between. We come in many colours, and even our eyes have different shapes and colours. Our noses come in every shape imaginable. So do faces, lips, ears and everything else. Almost everyone speaks, despite there being thousands of languages and countless variants and dialects spoken. Around the world we wear different clothing,

Our tastes are as different; we celebrate different feasts and holidays and the food we like to eat differs greatly. What people in one place consider a delicacy, others would never touch. And the food some people eat or drink forbidden to others. Despite all of these differences, the fact remains, deep down, we are really all the same. We all live on the same planet, breathe the same air, and warm ourselves in the same sun. There are approximately seven billion people living on this planet, according to the latest statistics. Can you imagine it? Seven billion human beings, young and old, sick and well, happy and unhappy, kind and unkind, strong and weak. People everywhere and ALL are different. I find it strange that some people dislike others because they are different than themselves. They forget that they too would seem different if they could see themselves through the eyes of others.

Imagine how dreadfully dull the world would be if everyone looked, thought, ate, dressed, and acted the same. Instead of looking at our differences, we should try to discover similarities and commonalities among ourselves. Our diversity is our national asset. After four years of AbbyFest, there has been a big change in the thinking of people living in the Fraser Valley who are now getting to know and learn from each other. This Con’t...

is a positive change. But we need to continue to work together to create conditions for dialogue throughout our society, cultures and people, based upon respect for commonly shared values. It is through this dialogue that we can achieve global visions of sustainable development encompassing observance of human rights, mutual respect and creation of strong bonds. The value and dignity of all Canadian citizens regardless of racial or ethnic origin, language, culture, background or religious affiliation must be recognized and appreciated. Let us all raise our voices to encourage and enhance multiculturalism. Let’s build bridges that bring communities together. When different races grow up together they learn to respect each other as different nations contribute their culture, traditions and art to Canada. The sharing of our ideas and knowledge helps us communicate with people from different backgrounds. Let’s start talking to learn about others.

Canada is a rich mixture of cultures and we need to place equal emphasis on all cultures and backgrounds that influence the shape of our country, ensuring that they have an opportunity to contribute effectively to the development of our shared nationhood. AbbyFest is a small step toward bringing people of different backgrounds together. It provides an opportunity for people to mix and mingle and creates an environment where people are able to talk with each other, share ideas, learn from each other and at times help each other develop a common understanding. Abbyfest 2012 will include arts and crafts of aboriginal people, local artisans, ethnic and religious groups. Cultural entertainment is provided in various forms such as the University of Fraser Valley students’ presentation of an international fashion show and dozens of dancers who will perform everything from modern Egyptian cabaret dances to Ghana folk dancers, Csardas Hungarian danc-

ers and Ukrainian dancers. There will also be performances of Punjabi folk dances, a martial arts display, karate demonstration, Gypsy dancing, a tambourine dance, Spanish fan dance, a veil dance, Israeli dances and Sudanese cultural dances. The extensive food court is filled with food, aroma and taste of many countries. This is a family-oriented festival and, best of all, it is completely FREE and open to everyone.

Congratulations to

Abby Fest 2012 From all of us at Canadian Western Bank
